Cranky Kong gets cranky with IGN

Just a reminder that Cranky Kong has taken over the Nintendo of America Twitter feed today, so if you want to ask him a question be sure and tweet at @NintendoAmerica and use the hashtag #CrankyKong. One example of his cheekiness came when the official IGN account tweeted to ask just why he’s so cranky.

Cranky’s reply hints that Nintendo of America is aware of fans who are disgruntled, so perhaps we’ll see some changes in the future! Go let Cranky have a piece of your mind, if you can take it!

hmm I can hear that theme tune now.

      • Donald Estep

For some reason ever since i was little i have always though of this when using a pencil sharpener.

      • That guy who hates Spike

This gif is a metaphor for Nintendo. Playing the same thing over and over again.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          Lol.

    • Arthur Jarret

You know, in the olden days – we didn’t have all these new-fangled inventions like the internet.

Defending your game system meant making a human shield so rabbid hedhehogs wouldn’t tear down the Nintendo Power posters.

Posting a screenshot meant having to develop a picture and send it to a magazine.

Trolls had to go out and offend people in person

      • TAKANYAN

        That last sentence.

      • Jaxon Holden

Lol, right on with the whole developing a pic thing. I remember GamePro magazine posting some world record times for Mario Kart 64, and I actually ended up beating 4 of them (although without internet, I’ll never know if anyone else surpassed mine). Problem was, my camera couldn’t take a proper picture of the tv screen, so I was never able to send in proof of my accomplishment.

      • KoolAidMan

I can see that happening way back when….
*Plays chess, outplays other player by a longshot*….
        U mad bro?

  • http://Johnaguilera.prosite.com/ John Aguilera

he should get cranky with Gamespot’s review lol.

    • tom

      agreed!

    • Shota

      Hahaha exactly!

    • Shadao

Well he did make a jab to their complaint of cheap pitfalls by saying that he’s “old enough to remember when falling in a pit in a platformer was called “lack of skill” and not “cheap.”

    • Ducked

GameSpot is the worst video game site. All of there reviews sucks, there Nintendo haters.

  • DK_Hadouken
    • Mithiragi

      lol

  • Magnus Eriksson

Cranky Kong did get his ass whipped by Gamespot. They gave the game a 60/100. I was going to pick up the game, but this review surely made me change my mind.

“Tropical Freeze’s levels see little in the way of new challenges or designs to accommodate them. Or maybe, just maybe, it’s because–despite some fun moments–this is one of the least exciting platformers I’ve played in some time.”

also the game mechanics reveals that RETRO Studio lied when they said that they wanted to do a DK game instead of Metroid because they wanted to test out new stuff. Appearantly there is very little new to this game:

“The problem lies with Tropical Freeze’s reluctance to stray too far from the formula of its predecessor–or indeed, many a ’90s platformer–without maintaining the same levels of quality, and without adding anything meaningful along the way.”

other things that doesnt sound to good:

” Sometimes I’d perform a leap of faith during a particularly tricky section, only to land on an enemy on the other side that had lurked just out of shot.”

    and

“…even the visuals fail to make an impact.”

I think I just skip this one. Appearantly the three month long delay only made a bad game mediocre. Nintendo have clearly lost all its Mojo, and its seems to be a contagious disease as they have made Retro sick too. They are clearly failing to reach up again, but maybe thats for the best… I think I talk for all fans when I say that now its the time to pull the plug Nintendo.

    • DK_Hadouken
    • Agent721

Interesting to base your lack of purchase on one solitary review, given the very high reviews found everywhere else…and especially from Gamespot…I think they’re one of the worst video game sites around. They’ve let me astray too many times with reviews I don’t agree with. If you typically agree with them, then you’re right for yourself…but I certainly find myself disagreeing with their reviews many times.

      • Magnus Eriksson
        • mario54671

There are other reviews like Destructoid (more brutally honest site) giving it a 10/10. You’re selecting the most negative ones.

“Nintendo have clearly lost all its Mojo, and its seems to be a contagious disease as they have made Retro sick too. They are clearly failing to reach up again, but maybe thats for the best… I think I talk for all fans when I say that now its the time to pull the plug Nintendo.”

What do you base THIS on?

        • Petri

And there’s a shitload of more:
          http://www.metacritic.com/game/wii-u/donkey-kong-country-tropical-freeze

But either way, I play games, and don’t give a duck about reviews.

        • Agent721

Thanks. I will find out tomorrow as I preordered it, but I am a HUGE fan of this series and platformers in general, so my opinion will probably be biased. I for one do not want them to pull the chord on this series!!!…Nintendo just needs to put out other franchises as well and not just DKC and all its platformers…perhaps its platform overload for some folks.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Im sorry to hear that you already bought it :(

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Are you this serious? Or just being sarcastic to annoy the fanboys of the site? Lol.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Nah, not serious. Will pick it up myself tomorrow :)

Just found the worst reviews I could find to annoy people. Thats how I am :)

          • Mario

Ha ha ha!! You got me there Magnus!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Same here. You’d think people would learn to ignore comments like it by now. It’s amazing.

          • Yerba_Sutra

            Ahhhh you rascaly sumbitch, you

I can never tell if it’s people like you or if it’s people who are actually serious about that crap who are the reason I can’t find a freakin’ site on which to have a decent conversation about games I like

          • Magnus Eriksson

You are new here I guess :) Most people here know that I do things like this from time to time :) Wecome btw

          • Yerba_Sutra

Hahaha I wouldn’t say “new”, I’m actually one of the top posters on the forum section of this site XP just have been on a sabbatical from the news pages cause it gets to a point where you see enough legit hate thrown around in comment sections of articles that it gets hard to tell when someone’s just messing around for a laugh, y’know?
But you got me. Good on you, sir. Keep on keepin’ on.

          • Rinslowe

Unlike you, Magnus is mostly articulately a rascal.
You on the other hand actually believe the nonsense you write…

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Or, you believe that I believe what I say. Art is subjective and it sucks for you if you don’t appreciate mine. Which makes me wonder why you even care what I do with my time….hmmm…you must have some kind of like of me to keep coming back for more. Lol.

I know you’ll just continue to sidestep each time and continue on your usual responses, so I feel no need to comment further on you. I’ll continue to be my happy self while you can continue on typing out senseless banter about one poster on this site. Bye bye now. :)

          • Rinslowe

You are truly lost inside the confines of your own delusions, if you think yourself positive in any way. And that reference about your comments and art? Scary stuff.
No-one could possibly believe that you believe what you say, or that would place you one step removed from genuine insanity.
No, I believe you know very well the game you play. And it has little if anything to do with the video game medium…

          • Daniel Gonzalez

“I know you’ll just continue to sidestep each time and continue on your usual responses”

Looks like I was right on the money. I’ll converse with you a little more since you put good effort in this despite it being quite delusional. If you think that I am actually playing a game, then why do you fall into it? Either you just like wasting your time on people you claim are idiots, or you are quite the fool who maybe having the delusions he so accuses others of having. May wanna get out of your own confines.

I believe you know very well that you have some kind of silly agenda to prove me and some others wrong in some way, but from where I stand, it only backfires on you. Delusional? That may be possible, but then again, the same can be said about your viewpoint. You end up going around in circles. Unless you’re a licensed psychologist, your words mean little in judging my sanity. It’s cute that you do try to figure me out, but only to be trapped in your own false reality. Good luck with that. <3

          • Rinslowe

Why do you consistently lead with your own points in quotation?? I literally haven’t bothered to read further than your – self – quotation/ failed attempt to convey a “truth” of some kind. It is painfully evident you are indeed a bag full of cats…
            Good luck with that.

        • Yerba_Sutra

Is it THAT easy to change your opinion?

“Unfortunately, beyond the visuals the game itself is disappointing. Tropical Freeze is another in a long line of side-scrolling platformers where the basic object is to jump from one ledge to another without dying.”

IT’S A FUCKING PLATFORMER GAME, THAT’S THE ENTIRE POINT.

Not everything has to be some dense story-driven bullshit, and those reviewers obviously don’t understand that.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Calm down bro.

          • Yerba_Sutra

I could have used less… flowery… language, I admit. Hate to see that you got downvoted because you were trying to encourage civil discourse :/ I’m honestly more bothered by that than I am by the wording I chose to use.

          • Simon Stevens

ah ha ha ha, don’t apologize to no’one :) not for your opinion anyway, who cares what strangers think, and your right, it is what it is, a damn good platformer

          • Yerba_Sutra

I stand by my statement; I’m just kinda disturbed that someone got downvoted for asking someone else to calm down. O_o

          • Simon Stevens

lol people get downvoted all the time, don’t disturb yourself, say DK is bananas and you’ll probably get downvoted

          • Daniel Gonzalez

DK is bananas. Now for the downvotes.

          • Simon Stevens

:D ahahaha they called my bluff

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Naturally. :P

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Downvotes in my case are due to my rep on the website, which doesn’t affect how I express myself. I do from time to time try to be peaceful with people if it’s possible. Magnus in all honesty is just trying to rile people up and I believe he’s only being sarcastic for the most part.

          • Arthur Jarret

Nah man, your reputation is bad. You must be trolling.

You know damn well that Magnus is as serious as a dramatic badger… which can get pretty serious, I can tell.

            I won’t, though – I wouldn’t want to give you badger-based nightmares.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Everyone here knows im dead serious with everything. If I wasnt serious all the time people would stop to listen at my insightful predictions and reviews of all showelware Nintendo push out as a desperate move to fill their console with software.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Course I’m a troll, the community says so. I see it as giving the site some spice. ;P

          • Magnus Eriksson

LOL! Seven downvoters who doesnt want to calm down. I must have angered them :D

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Lol. Seems so. We’re so popular.

          • Dimitri Soto

Ya you can say that about any genre Of games. Oh titanfall another online shooter where you aim and shoot. That is the core mechanics of any first person shooter that has been since they came out it doesn’t mean that it’s not fun

          • darkcreap

Agreed. Actually, I don’t like too much the “collect things in levels mechanic” in most platformers. Only ones I like for that are Mario 64 and Galaxy 1 and 2. Mario 3D Land and Mario 3D World are very nice, but I prefer 2D Marios for pure platforming.

Actually, I am starting to love more the DKC series because it is more pure platforming: Reach from A to B without dying. Recent games that focus more on grabbing items are not so appealing to me. I like the challenge to f***ing die at any moment. I like the pride of getting to point B after failing a hundred times and saying the most horrible things about the programmers’ mothers. In that sense, I am a classical man for platforming. Very classical.

By the way, have you tried Cloudberry Kingdom? It is a really tough (actually, I haven’t beat it), but it is very nice to play it with more people, because you can ease frustration by laughing about how miserably you die :D. Only issue with that game is that I think it some times relies too much on memory rather than ability for platforming. That is, you have to learn a tight sequence to beat the level. Or at least, that is my impression.

          • Yerba_Sutra

Yeah!!! That’s what I love as well. Older, more distilled games used to just have this attitude of “here I am, NOW JUST TRY AND BEAT ME!!” Collectables can be cool… but I have a love of speed running platformers so I always go for those after I’ve conquered the level first. And I think a good platformer is set up in a way where you can speed run it (following the momentum of the level, like how bananas or coins imply the most efficient route) and get the collectables at the same time. Which is a REAL challenge.

I haven’t played Cloudberry Kingdom yet. It’s on my wish list though! Love how platforming (solid, REAL platforming, not just a game with platforming elements) is coming back around to being appreciated again.Thank you for the further encouragement to buy it. :)

        • bobacdigital

Those sites are generalizing platformers … in the scope of platformers DK is one of the best out there…. wtf did you expect an FPS???? Wii U is home to some of the best side scrolling platformers period.. Why did you buy a Wii U if you werent interested in playing platforming games? Practically all of Nintendos franchises have gone that direction?

        • Nimmyb

Yeah baby, quote those reviews, I love it, gets me hot

        • Dimitri Soto

Nice that you didn’t put the 20, 30 other reviews on meta critic that praise the game. Name a game you love and I bet I can find a couple reviews that bash it

        • jjbredesen

Perhaps you should check out some more reviews IGN gave it a 9, and Destructoid gave it a 10, so yeah check out some more reviews.

        • Fred

And here’s some reviews for you on the other side of the spectrum.

If you want to just pull from the worst maybe I just want to pull from the best.
Really wouldn’t you rather read the pros and cons and decide if the cons are dealbreakers for you and if the pros are exciting to you and not just look at the number since your tastes certainly aren’t the exact same as the reviewer.
I have read/watched several reviews and I’m convinced this game IS for me.
Of coarse, I loved Donkey Kong Country Returns so it’s easy to conceive that the next in the series made by the same developers is one I’ll enjoy

        • Rinslowe

Both those comments/ quotations are terrible for a couple of reasons.
The first relates more-so to the difficulty of the title and the apparent novice skill level of the reviewer, within this title.
And the second point in quotation is just plain trolling at the review level, due to the fact the exact same thing can be attributed to nearly every genre without exception. Not to mention, apart from outlining the very basics of almost “all” platformers – the comment itself lends very little genuine critiquing to the point. Would the reviewer had been happy if while jumping from ledge to ledge they did actually die??

Although, I can agree to a certain point. Obviously DKC TF is a straight up platformer for most reviewers. It doesn’t redefine the genre and people were expecting more.
Maybe the gamers “ourselves” can be more on point. And accept it for what it is, a fun gaming experience. And not placing it on a pedestal of greatness as the Wii U’s saviour.

        • nexxus6

Do you want us to quote all the positive reviews that the game received? However, I think you already picked up 2 copies, just in case you break one in a game-driven rage.

        • ICHI

I does depend on how much you love platformers or DKC as to whether you’d want to buy this one at all or not. I was a big fan of the original but never really got to play DKC Returns so, though I wasn’t excited by this game at first, when it released it looked close enough to the original that I just had to buy it to see for myself. I am enjoying it and it does have some very hair pulling moments, which I love in a game. The graphics do look like they are more a HD upgrade of the Wii game rather than a totally new engine but that doesn’t matter really as the art style is very charming adn the levels are filled with lively backgrounds. The platforming can be a bit hit and miss if you’re not used to it, or if you really like the over easy Rayman Legends game, however, it does stay very true to the spirit of the original SNES game (a big plus in my book). You obviously don’t sound like you really want the game though and in that sense you probably wont miss much. For those of who do buy it over the next few weeks or who are even a little bit interested it’s a great little platforming adventure filled with charm and style as well as a meaty challenge and I’d be inclined to agree with the reviews that hit around the 80-85 mark.

      • MujuraNoKamen

Of course it didn’t change his mind he’s just trolling. Just ignore hi or we’ll never get rid of these haters.

    • blindtiger

is that a joke? you obviously dont talk for all fans

Who the fuck cares what you buy, faggot?

          • Arthur Jarret

            Sorry… my fault.
I like poking Nintendo-fan-eyes… it’s a weird hobby, I know – but what can I say? Everyone needs a hobby.

Yeah, thats very sad… But dont cry there brother, everything will get better as soon you grow up and dont need to use ugly words to feel cool. When you get older I bet that you will grow in confidence, and then you will talk like us grown ups do :)

          • Rukiafan Rukiachan

It’s always that “Fatass” person that posts that. He never has anything useful to say or contribute here in this site.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

When calling someone an idiot, it helps you use proper grammar. Hi hi <3

          • Rukiafan Rukiachan

You sir are an idiot, plain and simple. ‘-‘

          • Daniel Gonzalez

        • Donaald

Sidestepping like a typical fag LMAO

      • Rinslowe

        You are repulsive.

        • Donaald

          GOOD

          • Rinslowe

            I thought so.

          • Donaald

And why did you edit your comment.

          • Rinslowe

            It’s called – saying more with less…
            :)

          • Donaald

No, it’s called sidestepping now that “I flagged your comment and don’t want to look like a hypocrite to the mods” :)

          • Rinslowe

Actually it’s called editing. Self moderation to suit the message being made is hardly sidestepping. Unless something of supposed fact was being reported, it’s just a comment. An opinion. I don’t care what the mods are thinking truth be told. And it wasn’t me that flagged your comment. Lol
But I can see how you could get easily confused by that…

          • Donaald

            K…

        • Rukiafan Rukiachan

So now ‘fag’ hes a repulsive word?

          • Rinslowe

            Obviously it’s contextual.

    • bobacdigital

When it comes to game reviews I generally follow the trend… DK has received more positive reviews than negatives… Most of these review sites are upset that retros talents were wasted on another DK rather than Metroid… which is half the reason they write such negative reviews.

    • Virus6

I’m just curious… you listen to the ONE bad review out there instead of the vast majority of overwhelmingly positive reviews and that the very same review came from the person that could understand how to play Skyward Sword because he skipped the tutorials?

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I dunno if i agree with Nintendo pulling the plug in general, but they really need to pull the plug on sidescrollers for at least a LITTLE bit. Seriously, it’s like it’s all they think the Wii U is good for

      • Jaxon Holden

I’ve been hearing that accusation a lot lately. Strangely enough, Nintendo has only released one 2D platformer on the Wii U since 2012, and it is now 2014. In fact, there are only two 2D platformers total on the Wii U, NSMBU and Rayman Legends.

There are just as many FPS on the Wii U as 2D platformers. And I don’t see anyone complaining about having too many of those.

I mean, if this was like the 7th platformer Nintendo had released since launch, perhaps your statement would hold a little water. But that’s simply not the case. Up until this point, Nintendo has only released 2 platformers total, including both 2D AND 3D. Hardly a sign that “it’s all they think the Wii U is good for”.

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Nintendo made sidescrollers sure, but take a look at VC and indie titles, and the number is ridiculous. Rayman Legends, Metroid, Trine 2, to name a few

    • Nimmyb

Your posts always get me sexually aroused

      • Simon Stevens

baaaaahahaa I feel the same way ;)

      • Magnus Eriksson

Me too. It must be a connection here baby :)

    • Fred

Don’t be an idiot. If you don’t want to buy this game that’s fine, but don’t pretend you speak for all fans when you say it’s time to pull Nintendo’s plug. You certainly don’t speak for me!

      • Magnus Eriksson

I speak for all fans but Fred. Happy?

        • Fred

Yea you’re right I’m the only one in the world that disagrees with you.

        • Simon Stevens

you don’t speak for Fred, Fred speaks for you!, damn that Fred….. the feller just makes too much sense

    • jrob23

only a total douche would take the worst review, and one based on it being too hard for the reviewer, as his barometer for buying the game. Congrats troll

      • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, I know. Im such an asshole :)

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Yes, yes you are. We love you for it.

        • Simon Stevens

Wouldn’t be the same here without you champ :) but that Donald though…… his overuse of the word fagot displeases me with great intensity…. he’s becoming a problem

    • Simon Stevens

Usually I agree with you Magnus, but don’t talk for everybody, some still find the game fun and appealing :) you can’t talk for me because me and the little one really enjoyed it, and get real, a multi billion company ain’t going nowhere, if they die, so does everything along with them, there a company with pride, I would bank that we’ll never see a Nintendo franchise on any other system than there own

    • Arthur Jarret

I read all reviews – and they do seem to boil down that TF is just more of the same – and doesn’t bring anything new to the table.

Of course, the donkey kong games haven’t strayed from their predecessors much since the first. It’s completely expected and it’s odd to have such a negative impact on any review.

Gamespot is the only review I’ve read complaining about the graphics, though.

The rest just seems like a manchild bitchin’ about the difficulty. It reminds me of the unjustified complaints by reviewers about W101.

Seems that Nintendo must reverse their thinking to win over reviewers like these: stop making kiddie aesthetics with brutal difficulty, but make brutal aesthetics with kiddie difficulty.

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

    Changes? Yeah right..lol.

  • Pikachief

Nintendo of America is fully aware of what we say. Nintendo of Japan doesn’t care. Reggie himself has said this.

  • Jon Neale

I’m not sure this was what we wanted retro to make but it sure looks good. I think the issue lies with nintendos obsession with mario, and maybe we should look at games like mario tennis, mario golf, mario bros and say could the development team been put to better use to make say a kid game or f-zero or starfox etc.

  • Matt

What are you guys talking about?
Are you trying to say that Tropical Freeze got bad reviews?
It got a meta score of 81 which is great.
Out of 51 reviews it got 41 positive reviews and 10 negative reviews, which is a great effort.

    • Mr. Hobo

Correction: 10 mixed reviews not negative. Makes it sound better.

    • Simon Stevens

Best DK game I’ve ever played, at this point the big game websites just look to take shots at Nintendo, which is a shame, they’ve performed poorly, sure, but it’s no reason to try and snuff out a good honest review, for me, the game gets a 9.5 :)

      • Arthur Jarret

They’ve been taking unfair shots since wonderful 101, it seems. That was a 9/10 game and the control complaints were unfounded.

        • Simon Stevens

I thought that too, but to me as good as w101 was, the whole stopping and starting bummed me out at times, the pace of the game was my only complaint, I didn’t get to kick butt nearly enough without distraction, it got an 8 for me ^^

          • Arthur Jarret

I liked the challenge mode. A bit more non-stop action and multiplayer is awesome. If you don’t like the slomo while drawing, put it on highest difficulty.

That’ll force you to make quick right-stick movements during combos (as easy to learn as streetfighter)

          • Simon Stevens

It wasn’t really the controls, it was the way the story unfolded and stopped almost every 5 minutes and the way you had to beat bosses by doing it in a scripted fashion, when really, I just wanted to smash there skulls in :D I loved W101, Hope the sequel if there is one fixes that

        • jay

I laugh when all the “hardcore gamer” critics give Nintendo games low scores for being too hard.

          • Simon Stevens

It’s those filthy casuals, there behind this!!!!!!!! *voice of the gods voice*

          • Diaz

Seriously! When the IGN reviewer gave The Wonderful 101 a bad review because she couldn’t figure out the controls I just lost all respect for them.

          • DragonSilths

I have to agree with that reviewer. I give Wonderful 101 a 5/10. I loved the story, the humor, and cutscenes. But when it came to me actually playing, well my brain cant handle that much stuff at once so I really hated when I was playing, I was just like come on get on with the story, the story is amazing!!! Wonderful 101 should have been an anime instead of a game.

          • Magnus Eriksson

How often is that? IMO its mostly handholding games. I didnt see the Game Over screen once in a Nintendo game since N64 era. Maybe even it was SNES :D

          • Keyser

Guess someone hasn’t played Fire Emblem :D

          • Jaxon Holden

Just because you don’t see a Game Over screen, doesn’t mean the difficulty of progression isn’t steep.

          • Arthur Jarret

Most mainstream games by Nintendo don’t, indeed.
Pikmin 3, while great, was very easy. The only actual challenge was top-ranking all the challenges (especially the DLC ones)
New super mario bros. games are all very easy.
I didn’t die in Luigis mansion 2 once.
I haven’t lost a life in a Zelda game since a link to the past.

However, there are quite a few tough challenges by Nintendo – Maybe you should keep playing Mario 3D world’s after game. Champion road (the levels that unlock after you got all stamps, all golden flags and all green stars) gave me a game over screen.

Had some game overs in DKC returns too… not to mention Sin & Punishment successor of the stary skies on hardest difficulty. Kid Icarus 3DS on 9.0 difficulty is an awesome challenge too – even if you have high-ranking weapons.

          • Shota

            hey you back!

      • jay

Considering the onslaught of negative bias Nintendo gets, It surprises me how high their scores on Metacric get. Nintendo exclusives get lower scores by default.

        • Simon Stevens

Even Pikmin didn’t get a 10 and that deserved one, don’t know what kinda level they’d expect out of a game like that, completely in it’s own league, fun, gorgeous setting, etc, yet flawed games apparently deserve a 10

    • NkoSekirei

i wouldnt trust gamespot or a few others they suck at reviews and quit bias to nintendo games but it got solid reviews from gameinformer, ign and few others as well

      • readypembroke

GameInformer gave it the Game of the Month in its latest issue with that Metal Gear Solid V game of the front. It got a 9.25 in the issue.

  • Dj

Will someone ask him about Flipnote Studio 3d? Theres been no news about that in months

  • darkcreap

Man, I am waiting for 12 AM CEST. I want to download it so badly right now!!!! Couldn’t they just let me download it in advance? I promise not to open it till 12 AM. Well, at least I would try :D

    • Dimitri Soto

They should at least let you download it an hour before the release date so you can actually start playing at midnight

      • Fred

Move to another time zone. See my reply to darkcreap

    • Fred

I’ll be downloading it at 10pm. It always happens this way, they release it at midnight Eastern and I live in Utah so I can hit download at 10pm

      • darkcreap

Um, I wonder if they release it at CEST-1 for the UK or CEST for all Europe. In the best case, I would get it at CEST-1, since the console is region locked. Never tried changing my country of residence, to see if the eShop changes.

Nevertheless, I could only get it one hour early. The problem is that the console is region locked and it will only work European versions of the games, so…

        • Arthur Jarret

My store texted today that I could pick it up… of course, I’m home an hour after they close… but tomorrow I’ll pick it up. If I’d have chosen the store in the city I work in, I could have owned it already.

It’s a store that only sells the game once they’ve gotten the ok from nintendo, too… so that kinda undermines the benefits of downloading.

          • darkcreap

“It’s a store that only sells the game once they’ve gotten the ok from nintendo, too… so that kinda undermines the benefits of downloading.”

Sorry, I don’t get your point. How does that undermine the advantages of downloading?

          • Arthur Jarret

One of the advantages is early, immediate access.
That advantage is gone if they allow retailers to sell the game a full day ahead of the digital launch.

The remaing advantages (no disc swapping needed, no room for games required, no need to drive to a store) are heavily outweighed by the advantages of buying the retail version (no disc space required, a physical collectible, trade-in value, able to be lended or borrowed, early access, free coaster)

          • darkcreap

OK, thanks, know I see it. Retail versions are also cheaper usually. Yes, that’s true. I usually receive my Amazon copy a day earlier (although not always).

I downloaded it and in a couple of hours it installed. I played two stages and so far I am liking it. I haven’t measured the loading times, but they seem acceptable. Except for Funky Kong shop. It’s not too long, but you don’t expect such a loading time for a simple in-game store.

I didn’t like, though, the loading times of the startup. I perceived it longer than usual. Maybe it has to do with the fact that some games have these presentation animations that keep you distracted while the game really loads.

          • Arthur Jarret

It’s odd that Retro – of all studios – has such an issue with loading times, especially considering how they smartly used the blast doors to make the entire game seem like a seamless, load-free world in the Metroid Prime series.

You’d expect they would be able to buffer the most likely to-be-loaded assests to memory – especially noting the relative lineair nature of this game.

Anyway – can’t wait to commit some serious time to it once work is over today.

          • darkcreap

I bought the primes long ago, but haven’t played them yet. Yes, pretty strange. I guess they had their trouble to finish it on time for whatever reason. Or maybe they took a bad design decision and didn’t make it so levels could be loaded in smaller chunks.

          • Arthur Jarret

The primes are definitely worth dusting off your gamecube for… just a shame some environmental touches are missing from prime 1/2 of the wii trilogy – such as the frost forming on the blaster while you charge the ice beam.

I really hope they make another one on Wii U that includes an expanded online mode as seen on the DS version.

If any game can show how the Wii U gamepad can be used in cool new ways, it’d be a metroid game. (Scanning, weapon swapping, spaceship-route plotting like starfox command, heat-seaking missile lock on – by – tapping, touch screen free aim)

    • Arthur Jarret

It makes no sense, as they usually allow the retailers to sell the game a day early… so the downloaders (who give them more margin, get no box or trade-in value and no way to take the game to a friends house) don’t even get the benefit of playing the game at the minute of release.

  • alex toschi

I just asked them why Reggie lied about giving us a drought of games. let’s see if they respond to that.

    • darkcreap

Please, tell us when you know ;).

  • Dimitri Soto

I’ve read some of the bad reviews and its seems they only complain about it being too hard and basically being a platformer

    • Yoshi5081

Everyone knows that DK games are always hard… They shouldn’t have review the game because of that!

    • jay

lol just posted about this above LITERALLY right before I read this comment!!

      Strange.

      ORIGINAL COMMENT:

“I laugh when all the “hardcore gamer” critics give Nintendo games low scores for being too hard.”

      • companyoflosers

funny how other games get higher attention for being hard like its a good thing but when a nintendo game gets hard it gets criticized. werent people complaining nintendo was too “kiddy”? this also supports the comment made at nintendo stating that western gamers have goten worse. something about them not being able to beat the first mario game on nes.

        • Dimitri Soto

Ya true I also read one bad review that said I was better than DK returns. That game was widely praised obviously some reviewers have some spite against the wii u.

        • Simon Stevens

People won’t be happy until Mario looks like the smoker from One piece, and Peach looks like a blonde Titania from Fire emblem, people fail to realize and accept these franchises for what they are, and if kids and N fans enjoy it…. J don’t see a problem, only a bias reviewer who for some selfish reason cannot see an audience for games outside of there field of play, no idea what makes these companies feel there so entitled and superior, it’s a joke…

      • Jan

Well, Kids nowadays are used to quicktime-event movies :D

        • Arthur Jarret

Beyond: Two souls was a pretty awesome movie, though.
Stuff like that, and Akuma’s wrath is a great way to unwind after getting through a hard world in Donkey Kong.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Never heard of that game. Did you mean Asura’s Wrath?

          • Arthur Jarret

            Nah man, Akuma’s wrath.

Some idiots call it Street Fighter 4… but I haven’t seen a single fight in that game take place in a street… and it’s obvious the game is all about Akuma and his glorious wrath.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Ahh. Sounds lame. Personally, I’d rather play Street Fighter 2 in the arcade any day. The franchise has been a let down ever since.

          • Arthur Jarret

You should try playing Street Fighter IV at my house… I got a home-made 2P arcade stick thingie that I promised JJBresden to make photos of months ago.

It’s still an awesome looking game even on my huge screen… plus, I usually put my friends up to a tournament where the loser of each round has to take a shot of whiskey.

It usually gets out of hand (a.k.a. fun) very quickly.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Hahaha. I can imagine.

          • readypembroke

Rented Beyond: Two Souls from Redbox and fell in love with it.

      • palomino blue

Gamers should strike the word “Hard” from their vocabulary. Challenging games often have more replay value because you had to work at it. It’s a labor of love.

    • Guest

Vast majority of reviewers claim the game is oozing with creative charm, and praise it as one of the defining features of the game. What does that small group of critical reviewers do? Attack that very strength. “It’s dull”, they say. “It’s bland”, they say. Vast majority of reviewers praise the soundtrack, but what does that small group of reviewers do? Fail to mention it, or even more shockingly, DEDUCT points for saying it makes the game feel “too familiar”. And anyone who’s played DKC Returns knows the game has some of the most technical, precise mechanics of any platformer to date. What does that small group of reviewers say? Oh, the gameplay feels “off”. Well, the gameplay was never off before, so why is it all of a sudden a problem now?

Those negative reviews were nothing short of slander, hiding behind the mask of unbiased opinion, and they knew exactly where to strike- the game’s greatest strengths. They picked off the game’s greatest attributes one by one in an attempt to question everything about the game that makes it great. Pinpoint tactical strike against Nintendo and the Wii U. >Can’t let the system have too many high scoring games- people might start buying it then, and we can’t have that. We want Nintendo to be irrelevant.

    • The Clockwork Being

”OMG there isn’t enough hand holding 1/10 for you DK Tropical Freeze ”

      -hArDcOrEgamerz

      • darkcreap

Just one small question, because I’ve seen this expression (hand holding) a couple of times in the thread. That means tutorials, right? Someone holding your hand like you were a little child, yep?

        • The Clockwork Being

Hand Holding and tutorials are 2 different things. The tutorial is there to help the player know the different mechanics of the game and the controls. Hand holding is used in games to make things obvious or too easy for the player. Like telling the player what to do when it isn’t necessary or pointing out things when it is also not necessary.

Sounds like a good place to visit. :)

      • Mithiragi

It is. Let’s make a difference.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          Count me in. :)

          • Mithiragi

Flipping the words of JFK, Ask not what we can do for Nintendo, but what Nintendo can do for us.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Probably Wii U Music:Bleeding Ears Edition

          • Mithiragi

            LMAO.
This will make your ears bleed for real though.

  • Dylan Groot

I’m already at world 3. People (as if there were any doubts in your minds), this game….is awesome….The negative reviews are bullshit. I’ve read them and I disagree with every single point they bring up. This is how games should be. Challenging, georgeous and FUN.

    • Simon Stevens

      Couldn’t say it better myself

    • Mithiragi

Glad you like it. I’ve been dying to get a new game for my Wii U lol. Tomorrow’s the day for me.

      • Shota

for me just a few hours till i get the game!

        • Mithiragi

          Nice. Have fun!

          • Shota

i have it now. believe me it’s damn awesome!

          • Mithiragi

That’s great. I’m getting it soon!

          • Mithiragi

            You were right. It’s amazing!

          • Shota

loading time is a bit slow but the game and the music are just damn wonderful!

          • Mithiragi

The loading times are alright. The only loading screen that was really long for me was the one that displayed clouds as the game was loading. That was long as hell lol. But overall, the game is fantastic and the music, that music, is amazing.

    • DragonSilths

What the fuck? How did you get it already? I suppose it could be a time zone thing. But its 2am right now for me…Still should be like 8 hours till you get a copy.

      • Dylan Groot

It was in some shops here on the 20th. Typical case of competing retailers, but it works for me. ;)

        • Arthur Jarret

Actually, Dylan – Nintendo usually emails the stores to say they’re allowed to sell it… they usually allow it a day before.

(Source: hanging out in the gamemania due to a slightly lacking social life)

          • Dylan Groot

Ah ok, didnt know that, thanks!

  • Donald Estep

The last game was good and all but everything seemed really generic compared to all the other dkc games. How is this one?

  • David Trail

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze out tomorrow. Yay!

  • William Mendoza

someone should ask him how donkey kong was when he was little XD

  • http://www.youtube.com/zyroxz2 ZyroXZ2

I think this whole Cranky on Twitter thing is a very intelligent, “creatively cheap” marketing ploy. It costs nearly ZERO dollars to do this, yet it gets people talking about Cranky and looking at DKC:TF. This is a reminder that Nintendo is not as “stupid” as people continue to think!

  • kensredemption

    This is golden. xD

  • AkaLink77

i’d ask whether or not Sakurai even listens or reads the requests in the SmashBros Miiverse community. (not all the time but atleast once in a while, he should)

  • ETeach

“Cranky’s reply hints that Nintendo of America is aware of fans who are
disgruntled, so perhaps we’ll see some changes in the future!”

Or maybe his reply just means Nintendo’s aware half the gaming community is bat-**** crazy.

    • Rinslowe

“Or maybe his reply just means Nintendo’s aware half the gaming community is bat-**** crazy.”

What is the “crusade”/ “Nintendo Movement”?

      • Mithiragi

Shokio’s idea. It’s purpose is to gather a group of people and think of ways on how to improve the Wii U. It’s just in its planning phase right now. The video above has all the info regarding the movement.

  • Leo

Wait. Are you saying that “hardcore gamers” are struggling to play a Nintendo “kiddie” game because it is “too hard”? Lmao!!! Those “hardcore children” never ceases to amaze me! :O)

  • RandroidRampage

Diddy Kong has been confirmed for Smash Bros.! Repeat he’s been confirmed!

    • I am Error.

Wait, one more repeat, please, I’m not sure I follow.

  • gerb1977

I thought this was highly entertaining…..Maybe Nintendo needs to hand over their Twitter to characters more often.

What’s making me smile… YOu can buy as many playstation 4s as you want on Amazon Japan… not selling… mwhahahahahahaha
