Check out the Giant Bomb quick look at DKC: Tropical Freeze [VIDEO]

Warning: This video contains story and gameplay spoilers.

Today is the release date for Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, with many outlets having already published their reviews. Ours is forthcoming, but in the meantime, check out what the Giant Bomb crew thinks of the game. Jeff and Brad discuss the merits of Funky Kong, some of the differences noticed between Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, as well as a little of the backstory for the game.

We even get a look at the three assist character’s main abilities, including Cranky Kong’s cane jump that looks suspiciously like Scrooge McDuck’s pogo jump from DuckTales. The guys go through some of the main levels, so if you can’t pick up the game today, this is a great video to tide you over until you do.

Are you playing DKC: Tropical Freeze? Let us know what you think about it!

Is there waiting list for this game at retailers??? Holy shit, may it be a good signal.

  • The Clockwork Being

    Looks good!

    • jjbredesen

Yeah i think this game was really underhyped. It really does look at lot better than i thought.

      • Magnus Eriksson

        Kjøpt det idag?

        • jjbredesen

          • Carlos Webster

You know, this is the first time you’ve spoken a european language.

          • darkcreap

I thought English was an European language, despite the Isles being separated from the Europe mainland.

          • Gameonfool

Haha yeah English is a European language so is French ect so Americans, Canadians and Australians all speak a European language

          • jjbredesen

Nah, we have spoken a european language a lot, but not normally with comments that are at the top, they are normally at the buttom of a intense discussion, because when we have serious descussions English just wont cut it XD

          • Carlos Webster

            I see.

          • Tim van Broekhoven

            What language is this?

          • val berger

            swedish, huh?

          • Luca Invernizzi

            More probably Norwegian.

Nice language, if you ask me. The dialect they use in oslo is quite musical in its own way.

          • jjbredesen

Yeah, but it sounds horrible when they try to talk English i laugh every time i listen to people from Oslo talk English, since i am orginally from the UK. XD

          • jjbredesen

            Norsk ;)

          • jjbredesen

            Norwegien ;)

        • The Clockwork Being

Well people were looking forward to it. It’s just that it seemed Nintendo wanted us to hate it so much. Showed it at the wrong events, teasing it the wrong way. Man the marketing of the game only made alot of people resent that game.

      • Donaald

I would say more like undermarketed, Nintendo fans know about it and have been hyping this game since last month at least, so has Nintendo in a way but I doubt the average consumer knows about it.

        • jjbredesen

It is suposed to be selling really good, but its true, marketing still sucks..

  • SGTMAR

My copy is waiting for me at Best buy. Might pick up a coke zero while there. I don’t know yet.

  • Brandon

Never played a donk kong game ever, but this looks pretty good. I was thinking when I buy the wii u again I will probably get this game also.

    • Cena’s Smirk

this is my first Donkey Kong game. It’s super hard, beautiful and fun!

  • Donaald

    I love the Art-Style

  • sharlo galmo

Got the game today, great game Nintendo still bring quality games……

  • InterTreble

I have never played a better DK before! This is a great new jem in Wii U arsenal. It’s a real pity for whom consider Wii U not to deserve a chance “because it won’t receive no multiplatform”. Simply because no system which will receive all the multiplatforms, will receive games like this. And you know, it’s not just this game… ;) Now, back to Tropical Freeze :)))

    • RyuNoHadouken

you must be young…this game is not the best DK…its more of a directors cut of the last one, but easier

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Well it was made for kids in mind.

        • RyuNoHadouken

DK on super nintendo was brutal!!

        • Jaxon Holden

I wouldn’t say that. Disney Infinity, Skylanders, Pokemon… those games are made with kids in mind. DKC, Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, not so much. They are kid-friendly, and most certainly appeal to kids, but not JUST kids. These games appeal just as much to adults as any other age group. And that’s what Nintendo is best at- creating fun games ANYONE can enjoy, not just adults, not just kids, but everyone.

          • Capt. Smoker

I trained my boy up just for this game, he couldn’t eat or sleep without completing 10 levels on mighty switch force and giana sisters, he’s a DK pro now, after seeing his work on pikmin 3, I had no doubt he would be, he made his old man proud, Nintendo games may look like there made for kids in mind, but trust me, there anything but!, when will the casuals ever learn.

        • Cena’s Smirk

it’s too hard for my boy.

          • Guest

            That’s what she said.

      • Jaxon Holden

I’m 30 years old. I grew up on the SNES DKC trilogy. I’ve 100% Returns. Twice. And make no mistake, this IS the best DKC game. Look, I love the old ones, they were and still are masterpieces of their time. But I’m not going to prop those games up on a pedastal for nostalgia’s sake. This game is better. Even Returns was better than the original trilogy, and this game is superior to Returns in every way. Not only is Tropical Freeze the best DKC game I’ve ever played, it’s one of the best GAMES I’ve ever played.

And I don’t think it’s easier, not at all. Even the temple level for World 1 can be brutal. I think the difficulty is more finely tuned- for example, Returns had a VERY difficult mine cart level in the 3rd world (think it was the third?), rage-inducing even.

        • val berger

man that mineshaft level, goddamn memories of faint and exhaustion. umph. although it was still kinda fun, in a masochistic kind of way. and it felt amazing beating that level. But yeah, I guess a bit better balancing wouldn’t ve hurt here but then again, unbalanced games often are far more interesting for me. In SM3DWorld for example it’s not really totally balanced as there are a few harder Levels in kinda earlier worlds and some levels that are just about having fun and joy somewhere occurring in the last worlds. And it really works out great. But yeah … that mineshaft level ….oh boy.

        • Cena’s Smirk

I raged quit last night against the Walrus King boss! this game is beautiful and hard!

        • C4

Hard levels out of nowhere IMHO is more some kind of artificial difficulty, or they just forgot to balance those stages properly. On the other hand if the difficulty increases too evenly, and your skills get better while playing, of course it can look “too easy” for some people, so I kind of understand the complaint. And if you die like in most good games you instantly realize why (unlike in Dark Souls :P )

      • Cena’s Smirk

DK:TF is my first DK game. are you saying the ones before it were harder? OMG how did anyone beat them? DK: TF is HARD!

        • RyuNoHadouken

play the original trilogy on SNES…you can probably find the roms online…they’re Dark Souls hard

          • classicgamer20

I really didn’t the original DKC trilogy was that hard. But this one is definitely harder

      • InterTreble

Have you really played the game? Do you think the boss battles are the same epic level? Do you really think the characters (especially the enemies) were so well depicted and characterized or even better? Are you saying you’ve played any DK in HD before now? Do you know who is David Wise? Man, you cannot say it’s a Director’s Cut without giving any arguments, just guessing a user’s age and stop. Then tell me how many times you’ve played with Diddy, Dixie and especially Cranky in DK Returns because I didn’t manage.
P.S. No comment about it’s easier because it’s a personal opinion, and they have already replied extensively to it.

        • RyuNoHadouken

Locate a chill pill. Take it

          • InterTreble

Congratulation for your arguments and maturity. What a shame…

    • Skelterz

      Gem.

  • Mithiragi

    The game’s great.

  • Rukiafan Rukiachan

    Off topic:

Anyone know how to put someone on ignore list here on this site?

  • WiiUPS4

Who wants a zombie mario game..Please Nintendo!!!!!!!!!!!

    • darkcreap

      @magnus_eriksson:disqus, you have been invoked.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Parents would be outraged. Besides, no Nintendo diehard wants that. That would be too innovative. Rehash ftw.

      • val berger

can’t really agree on that. Zombie Games are quite washed out these days. Just mixing them with Super Mario wouldn’t really be innovative. Not everything that hasn’t been done before automatically is Innovative. I think the Super Mario franchise is the only one left, that constantly did an amazing job over the past games (for me), so I’d more go for Zelda or Metroid if its time for turning anything into a bloodfest ;)

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          Sarcasm my friend. ;P

      • WiiUPS4

Maybe but it doesn’t hurt to dream ..Right?

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          No arguments there.

    • Magnus Eriksson

All Mario games from now are Zombie Mario games. He is dead.

      • WiiUPS4

You want some awesome check this out

    • Simon Stevens
    • SP-937-215

Ugh, I was done with the zombie fad 15 years ago.

  • Whateveryouwantittobe

Good job Nintendo! Releasing the same stuff every year. That’ll really move system units!

    • Jaxon Holden

Now you’re just being ignorant. We didn’t see a Donkey Kong Country game for 15+ years, until Nintendo FINALLY gave their fans what they’d been wanting with the franchise reboot, DKC Returns (Wii), in 2010. It’s been 3-4 years, and one console generation later, before we FINALLY get a sequel. That’s hardly releasing the “same stuff” every year.

For most Nintendo franchises, we get ONE game per generation per console (there are a few exceptions, like seeing 2 Metroid Primes on Gamecube and 2 Mario Galaxy games on Wii). One 2D sidescrolling Mario on Wii U, for the entire generation. One Pikmin on Wii U, for the entire generation. One DKC on Wii U, for the entire generation (though I hope we get another). This year is completely different than last.

Last year we got Pikmin 3, Zelda Windwaker HD, Wonderful 101, Wii Sports Club and Super Mario 3D World. This year we’re getting DKC Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros 4, Monolith Soft’s X, and Bayonetta 2. Next Year we’ll probably see SMT x Fire Emblem, Zelda U, Metroid U or Starfox U (maybe), Paper Mario U, Battalion Wars U, and who knows what else. Point is, each year is different than the last. Idk why people have to make such ignorant statements, when the FACTS obviously say otherwise.

      • RyuNoHadouken

        U mad bro?

      • Capt. Smoker

It’s a shame, Nintendo as a games maker, seem to be getting back to there best, without being nasty to the Wii, the graphics were a bummer and looked worse than what we saw on the gamecube, now nobody is intereted unfortunately, I can’t wait for all those games you mention, especially sexy Samus in HD, hope we get another Fire emblem besides the Shin Megami cross over, I wish I had time for another console sometimes, but the Wii U has enough for my liking, plus, I’m busy smokin

      • matthew garcia

I wanted a 3d donkey kong like dk64. Oh well still looks good though

  • ufg

I’d say it was america with their stupid gun laws, more than cops. She was probably almost expecting a gun to be there, knowing she was going to the house of someone who was not only on probation but had violated that probation in a country where guns can be accessed so easily. Seeing a Wiimote in peripheral vision for a split second could’ve easily confirmed her suspicions, and obviously she wasn’t too courageous in instantly shooting the guy, I’d say it was fair to call it an unfortunate accident.

    • Tim van Broekhoven

      Wrong article my friend!

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I liked the commentary on the video here the video itself intrigued me enough to check out the miiverse community for DKC:tf and I learned a bunch of people allready finished the game o_0

Anyway the reason why I post is because of some screenshots I have seen, the game is full of easter eggs, on particulary reffering to Metroid, as it seems in one of the silhouette levels you can clearly see Samus’s gunship in the background between the trees. Did anyone notice it yet?

  • Pilu Skifte Grønvold

Bought Tropical Freeze yesterday and LOVING it! quality game with decent difficulty.

  • Mario

Man! Those levels are long! OoO

    • Pilu Skifte Grønvold
