Japanese sales from 2/10 – 2/16

Wii U sales

Every Wednesday Media Create releases their official sales numbers for Japanese software and hardware. It’s an interesting look at market trends for Japan, since Western groups like NPD don’t release their numbers weekly, but a month at a time. This week Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze released in Japan, which has strong competition from the likes of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 for Nintendo 3DS.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze debuted in Japan selling 36,000 copies its first week. For comparison, Donkey Kong Country Returns sold 166,000 within its first week in Japan when it launched for the original Wii. Of course, there’s quite a bit of difference between the two platforms since the Wii was nearing the end of its life cycle when DKCR was released in 2010.

When it comes to software sales, the Nintendo 3DS continues to dominate, holding 8 of the top 10 slots this week. In fact, Nintendo itself dominated the software sales with all but one of the top ten software titles being for a Nintendo platform. The odd man out is a PS3 title clocking in at number nine, Mobile Suit Gundam Extreme vs. Full Boost.

Thank you for putting the DKC sales figures in context.

    • The Clockwork Being

I know eh. I hate the people saying that this game failed because it sold less than DKCR.

Edit: But it would be good to see a ratio for both games and their systems.

    • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

ENOUGH WITH THE DAMAGE CONTROL DONKEY FLOP COUNTRY TROPICAL REHASH BOMBED IN JAPAN BECAUSE ITS RELEASED ON A SHITTY OVERPRICED LAST GEN JOKE OF A CONSOLE THAT WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU MILK ALL YOUR FRANCHISES FOR THE LAST 30 YEARS THIS GAME IS IS DOA I KNOW ITS SECOND ON THE SALES CHART BUT I DONT CARE IM STILL RIGHT

      • Gabe Hoffman

        Get out

      • David Byrad

XD Nice one, that was HILARIOUS! I think we’ve got another Magnus here! Awesome!

        • Dáibhí wotshissurname

At least Magus’ ones actually made sense when you analsed them, which I kinda reret not doing

          • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

It’s not supposed to make sense, I’m trying to make fun of the blind haters who troll on Nintendo dedicated websites.

  • palomino blue

Looks like Wii U sales went up slightly too. I don’t really think Donkey Kong is a console seller but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that number slowly climb and then spike when Kart comes out.

    • Gameonfool

Still three months till kart, this year will be better than last but it’s not quite as good as Nintendo promised

  • Gabe Hoffman

The people over at Nintendolife are crying way too much doom and gloom over this. DK has historically done better in the west to begin with and it hasn’t even released in NA yet. Another factor could be the game releasing in February which is when a lot of people are still relatively burnt out from the Christmas rush

    • Daniel Gonzalez

The sales will be similar to Pikmin 3 overall.

      • oontz

That is a valid prediction. I assume the same it won’t be a system mover but it will sell well enough.

  • andrewjcole

One PS3 game in software sales. 3DS is dominating in Japan! http://imgur.com/4iLx2.gif

    • Magnus Eriksson

      no, it dont

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Not sure about money, but it does make a good paper shredder.

    • Ducked

it prints money in the smallest country..

      • andrewjcole

True, but it’s not like it’s selling horribly everywhere else.

        • Ducked

          Who said it was?

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Very true.

  • matthew garcia

I dont believe this game will sale consoles but should sell decent within its install base

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

Even though DK might be a great game, I highly doubt a 2D platformer can be a high system seller. But it will do great in the install base for sure.

    • FoxMulder900

I’m starting to realize that (for most people) there is no single game that will make them buy a system. But if Nintendo can keep building of a library of great titles like this, eventually there will be enough to win over quite a few of the skeptics. I hope anyways!

      • Petri

But they take their sweet time.
That’s not bad, since it usually means quality.

But as the games get older, their appeal vanish, and one game every 3 months is not really growing up the library.

      • Ducked

“there is no single game that will make them buy a system”

        Three words, Super Smash Bros….

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

          boom.

        • FoxMulder900

True, that is definitely going to be one of the biggest system sellers. However, honest question here. Do you think a lot of people would still buy a Wii U for smash if it didn’t already have other Mario/DK/Zelda/Pikmin titles to make the purchase more tempting?

          • Ducked

Actually, for some, yes. I know a lot of people that bought a Wii just for Smash. And that was the only game they played on it. But yes, you are right. For most consumers, more software like Pikmin and Super Mario make it much more tempting.

          • oontz

            Good point right there.

          • Nookling

With Smash coming out this year it should sell systems. Especially considering it is backed up by Pikmin, Mario Kart 8, DKCTF, Mario 3D World, and Wonderful 101 and presumably Bayonetta 2 and X. And now that virtual console is finally coming into the picture. And buyers will know that Zelda U is in the future with the purchase of U (after seeing it E3 this year)

        • Ice Climbers

Given that the 3DS version doesn’t cannibalize the Wii U version’s sales. Smash might not do enough for Wii U. It might do as much for Wii U as 3D World did.

          • Nookling

3D world helped in US at least a little

        • abe

except its all so coming to 3ds, it wont help wii u sales

    • TULFich

I think it will over in the americas. Japanese culture is more about open worlds, RPGs, wierd dating sims, fighting games, some shooters, and beat´em ups. So is kind of difficult to see great platformers doing excellent over there. On the other side, over here platformers are going crazy (2D ones) just look at virtual shops (eShop, PSN, XBL, steam) but most are some time killers, even when they are tottally awesome games. DK hasn´t been my fav platformer, but I recently played the Wii one, and it is amazing!!

So I find this one to be more clever and better designed, as gameplay footage, trailers, and reviews come up (except for the gamespot´s one, they are just haters).

      Definitly a must buy game!!

    • Daniel Gonzalez

It’ll sell, but isn’t going to sell systems. That’s what Nintendo is hoping for MK8. Even that is uncertain at this point.

  • Gameonfool

About 35,000 ain’t that bad for one week in one country for a console that’s still yet to prove itself, it may sell over a million globally by next week

  • http://wiiudaily.com/ Monomon

It’s still a little bit too low IMO. But that is only first week, of not a full week.

  • InterTreble

I do wait for US sales figures, once DKTF is out there. This IP is an institution there. Less for EU. Few days still to wait.

  • Googs

Considering the small install base (of 1,75m-ish) in Japan, this is still a nice figure.

  • Ducked

It will be interesting to see how the PS4 debuts next week in Japan

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

it will be great, PS sells well @ Japan and in a first month all consoles sells well.

      • Ducked

Well, I wouldn’t count on Xbox One selling in Japan. But PS4 and Wii U will be fighting for every inch of sales. It’s the home country after all.

        • oontz

Ya xbox has never sold well in Japan.

        • matthew garcia

Dont imagine it will be much of a fight. I mean old ps3 is still beating wii u every week. Im sure ps4 will probably stomp on wii u on the sales part

    • Daniel Gonzalez

It’ll sell huge. I can’t say the same for Xbox One.

    • oontz

Early pre-order numbers are over a million for japan. I predict ps4 hits 7 million units world wide by April 2014.

  • Marcus Larsson

Hmm guess the vita is picking up speed

    • http://its-yuma-tsukumo.tumblr.com/ Yuma Tsukumo

There’s a lot of games that have come out/are coming out for the Vita this and next month.

      • oontz

        Borderlands 2!!!

    • oontz

The attach rate of vita to ps4 owners is around 60%.

      • Marcus Larsson

Which means they want an expensive Wii U

        • oontz

or they already owned a psvita. Not to mention “expensive” is relative to your standard of life. It’s really not THAT expensive for the investment you’re making.

          • Marcus Larsson

I mean the picking up speed part, but im just clowning.
They are both fun och Worth their money

          • oontz

agreed they are both fun toys.

  • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

    i preordered last night

  • Daniel Gonzalez

My money says that DKC:TF won’t be a system seller. Might as well release Mario Kart 8 now. That’s what most Nintendo fans want.

  • Mario

My god! Pokemon X and Y are still selling a lot since they were released!

    • Ice Climbers

What’s more surprising is Animal Crossing New Leaf. Its STILL in the top 20, and its been well over a year since it released in Japan.

      • Nookling

Animal Crossing was one of their best moves for 3DS!!! And it deserves the attention and buys because having played the previous games and being a huge fan, this one is easily my favorite and is a large step in the series.

      • Mario

        Yikes!

  • steveb944

Glad to see Ninty doing well. This just reminded me of Vita TV, guess that never came stateside.

  • Agent721

The weekly Wii U hardware saleses are very low still…behind the PS3. Mariokart cannot come soon enough.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Mario Kart 8 should be released earlier than May. Nintendo does things backwards. You’d think they would wanna increase their hardware sales sooner than later, especially with PS4 releasing in Japan in a few days.

      • oontz

I am interested to see the number next week after ps4 launches on Saturday.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Same here. I believe it’s going to go well.

  • Casey Oldham

Finally a site without click bait melodrama.

  • Rinslowe

    It’s holding consistently…
    Needing Kart out ASAP.

  • Blue Hernandez

We need more of these JRPGs in the States.
