Japanese sales for 2/17 – 2/23

Kojima-PS4-Launch-Event-Japan-6

Last week the PlayStation 4 launched in Japan, dominating the sales charts. The console sold 309k units its first week in its home country and of course all other hardware took a dip because of it. It’s interesting to note that the PS4 seems to be going toe-to-toe with the Wii U in terms of launch numbers, as the Wii U sold similarly during its initial holiday rush.

Four of the top ten software sales were for the newly launched PS4, and the newest Wii U title, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze slipped to 12 spot with sales of 14k after a launch week sales of 50k. It seems like the PlayStation 4 is currently taking over Japan, but it will be interesting to see if Sony’s new console can keep this momentum in the next few weeks.

In terms of Wii U numbers, despite the release of the PlayStation 4, the Wii U has held steady at 8k week over week.

    I like this weekly update.
I would like a weekly US sales data update more.
I would LOVE a european weekly sales update.

But just admit it – you’re just posting this so you can add random pics of japanese people!

    • gtosheex

That’s the only reason i come here! Who doesnt like random pics of japanese people?

      • Arthur Jarret

Who loves random pics of japanese people?
K-k-kel loves random pics of japanese people.
Is it true? Is it TRUUUUE?
        MMMHHMMM! I do, I do, I do-oooh!

        • gtosheex

awesome keenan and kel reference hahaha

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

American sales numbers aren’t released weekly like Japan, that’s why you see Japanese sales updates more frequently. NPD Group releases once a month and when they do, we cover it.

I think the UK numbers are twice a month, but I need to check into that as I haven’t found a reliable place to see the information.

      • Arthur Jarret

        UK only, though?
I’ll try to look at my end if there are any press releases or reliable sources for continental numbers in europe (so including Benelux, Germany, France etc.) to help you, my informational overlords at WiiUdaily :P

        • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Yeah I’ve never seen sales numbers for the rest of Europe or even a single country in Europe. I’m not sure if Germany and France have their own reporting agencies like Japan, US and UK or not.

It’s harder for me to find out since I don’t speak German or French and like I said, the only reason Japanese sales numbers get reported is because the information is reliable and easy to find already translated.

          • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

            Was? Spreche sie geine deutsch?

Just kidding a bit here Ashley I understand German pretty well and can speak it pretty well also (grammar sucks though), they’re my direct neigbours to the east, an hour drive or so.

Anyway Germany, France and most other European countries don’t give sales numbers at all, they must be that bad I’m affraid… Nintendo Europe doesn’t give sales numbers in general, I believe only Spain does once or twice a year :(

          • Tim van Broekhoven

Ik denk dat geine keine moet zijn ;-)

          • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

          • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

haha tja, wie niet he, alleen taal leraren hebben er geen hekel aan :)

      • jjbredesen

GFK is a site you can trust when it comes to sales in Europe they have weekly updates from all retailers, and platforms etc.

        http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index.jsp?c=p/software/uk/latest/index_test.jsp&ct=110015

        • MujuraNoKamen

ooh DK at umber 9 in the UK isn’t bad. I hope it shifts some consoles across the west for some time rather than just a one week increase.

      • Git Hoskins

    • Carl Fin

VGchartz is quite accurate and gets updated when figures are released.

      • Arthur Jarret

I’ve never heard any good things about VGchartz – it’s even a gamefaqs meme.

        • Carl Fin

It’s been accurate so far this year.

          • Arthur Jarret

I remember someone explaining to me how VGchartz queries only a few stores – then uses that as the basis for an educated guess. I’m not sure myself, though – I never did any research on how they operate.

Looks like Wii u sales haven’t being affected by the PS4

    • YayGs

And it looks like vita sales rose.

    • darkcreap

Yes. the problem is that WiiU sales are pretty low. It is clear that PS4 will be ahead this gen.

I hope, though, that they will rise once the good WiiU games arrive, which are going to be really good.

On the positive side, I think this will teach Nintendo a lesson for the future. Good thing is that at least they have a differentiation from X1. PS4 will very likely own X1 because it is more powerful, cheaper and does not mandate Kinect. I have been a defender of Kinect as a great innovation, as I love gameplay innovation (like Nintendo’s Wii), but due to the recent NSA scandals…

WiiU at least gives a different gameplay experience, which is nice. It could be a good second console. Too bad, since I expected better third party support. A Nintendo console with good third party support and Nintendo exclusives would have been a perfect deal, even with worse graphics than PS4 (at least for me). I hope Nintendo substitutes some way the lack of 3rd party support.

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

yes, :( i hope the 3rd some day support it. (really support)

    • matthew garcia

Nope they just stayed at 8000 which is kinda bad and also 7 year old ps3 is still outselling it which is even worse. Donkey kong failed to move any consoles at all.

      • Capt. Smoker

I’m not surprised, that game is frustrating, I never learn my lesson, I made sure to use my pro controller so I could throw it across the room and not punch a hole through the gamepad, I’m sure we all have those DK moments memorized by now

        • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

          mine comes the Friday. (DK)

          • Capt. Smoker

Be sure to have something to aid your frustration, I can’t count the amount of smokes I had that first night playing it, enough to give me a horrible cough and the inability to shout at the screen whenever I died because of a flaw in the game

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

hahahha… now that make me laugh

        • Ducked

I haven’t had much trouble with the challenge, but I find the controls to be a little week in some areas.

          • Capt. Smoker

Exactly my problem, you press jump at the right time and the fat asshole falls and dies anyway

          • Ninjatendo_forever

I thought this was right on the money…. NES games piss me off still :)

            http://25.media.tumblr.com/2c81ac997244251e35a039c518e14ccc/tumblr_n1bee24TiT1s8ouhxo1_500.png

          • Capt. Smoker

Ahaha I rocked it at Giana sisters twisted dreams on hard mode, and it still wasn’t as frustrating as DK, still… couldn’t put it down lol

          • Ducked

The analog stick doesn’t seem reliable, and grabbing on vines feels like your guessing if DK is gonna decide to grab the vines or not

          • Arthur Jarret

Grabbing vines is done by holding the button. (depends on your control setting, for me – using the D-pad controls and L/R to roll – it’s y, same as the run button) – release the button and donkey lets go.

Haven’t had a problem with it so far (on world 5 now)

        • matthew garcia

Yeah man its a tough one. Rewarding though if u get through it. Lot of memory required to beat levels

        • YayGs

I find it easier than Donkey Kong Country Returns so far (world 5 99 lives still). Personally, I think it’s funny when I die because it’s such a silly mistake at times (like during minecart stages).

          • Arthur Jarret

I find it harder… but I die less, which is because of the glorious lack of waggle.

I also died a lot from gawking at the amazing backgrounds during rocket barrel/minecart levels.

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

I’m not saying that they sell well, or poor….. i say that the wii u is selling the same with a new console with new games in the market.

      • Yen

Well considering there are more games coming out for PS3 than PS4 for now, naturally PS3 will still hold steady in sales.

        • matthew garcia

Yeah the final fantasy 10 hd remake comes out in march to. That will boost ps3 sales more also.

  • Lens Durandisse
  • BIG Franky

LOL at all of the poor souls picking up KNACK, LOL… omigosh, so bad…. (full disclosure, I was one of them, haha)…. fastest that I have traded in a game in YEARS…. used the trade in toward a pre-order of Donkey Kong, haha….

    • Ducked

Knack was a good game, don’t know what your talking about.

      • SmashFinale

Felt repetitive as hell to me. But Japan actually enjoy Sony platformers so they will most likely enjoy the game a lot.

        • Ducked

          Mario has repetitive gameplay

      • Donaald

Yeah, it’s a good game if you lack the braincells to play a real action/adventure game like Zelda/Tomb Raider/Batman

        • Ducked

          Don’t be a butthurt fanboy

          • Donaald

Yeah, I shouldn’t be butthurt about a mediocre at best game lmao

          • Ducked

I was being sarcastic when I said butthurt fanboy, and when I said the game was good. Gosh read sarcasm will ya fella?

          • Donaald

            lol sorry, it’s the custom

          • Ducked

            The custom?

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

            he mean the habit

          • Ducked

Oh, sorry I can be slow as a duck sometimes

      • BIG Franky

is that comment sarcasm? if not, honest to God that is the first time I have ever heard someone say that. true story.

        • Ducked

Yes it is, if it was good I’d go into detail

    • Jon

      isn’t Knack a bundled game?

  • William Martinez

Ok before people start with the nintendoom trend, Wii U sold almost the same units as PS4… that’s a good thing, even though i think ps4 will do better than Wii U in japan, beign sony more mainstream, I think Wii U will stay pretty close… of course a pack with mario kart 8 will help a lot, of course numbers are just that and it won’t make me change my mind when it comes to my preferred console this gen.

    • matthew garcia

I think your forgetting there is a whole world out there besides japan. Wii u will not even come close to ps4 sales. Nintendo cant rely on japan alone. It needs world wide help

      • William Martinez

ugh really? i never thought about that (sarcasm)…. i know sales worldwide are important i was just pointing out the fact Wii U sold almost the same amount of consoles like ps4 in japan, Wii U can sell healthy in japan, i can’t talk about sales worlwide because is hard to know those numbers….. i know is not flying but i hope it will recover.

        • matthew garcia

Well ps4 worldwide numbers are just about to pass wii u and its only been out for 3 months. Its gonna be ps2 era all over again with nintendo and xbox fighting for scraps

  • Thomas Fitzgibbon

Just in case you people are worried that Knack (an absolute turd of a game) is doing undeservedly well on the charts, then don’t be, after the launch weeks in all other territories the game “tanked”. At least superb titles like Super Mario 3D World end up passing a million sales in a month.

  • Jonathan Grine

Knack was a pack in for ps4s. That’s why its doing well lol

    • Ducked

Its also the only game right now that appeals to the Japanese gaming crowd

  • starwars360

I knew PS4 would spike up and 3DS continue dominate. Mario Kart 8 will making Wii U reach to sky sales by May. :)

    • matthew garcia

Thats what everyone says when a wii u exclusive comes out. None of them have worked

      • Capt. Smoker

Agreed, I’m all for wishful thinking, but this guy has gotta be smoking something

      • metalpants

None of them have reached the number one spot in Amazon pre-orders either. Especially in Japan. I think waiting would be wiser than assuming an outcome based on games that don’t have the power/influence of Mario Kart.

  • uPadWatcher

    * fake canned applause *

  • sharlo galmo

No one buys games say some retailers in Japan, the PS4 had no good games yet, i mean Knack on the top haha, i know it is because the bundel…..

  • Capt. Smoker

That Dragon Quest….. why Square continue to work on the crap Final Fantasy has become now and not more on an amazing franchise like Dragon Quest is beyond me…. plus they always sell the best :) good to see ps4 off to a great start too, bit surprised at Knack selling though, that game is a waste of anybodys money

  • Ninjatendo_forever

just got my awesome Wii U bundle….. while it seems very dread for the big N, I’m not worried about the PS4 or xbox1 or anything. Nintendo is an awesome gaming company and they have proved again and again that those two always follow Nintendos lead while claiming they are innovative because they copied Nintendos ideas of innovation.

I will always be a Ninjatendo Die-hard fan.

PS4 is a candy machine trying to squeeze more money out of sheeple who think graphics is the substance that makes a game…

    • Capt. Smoker

You make a good point, without the Wii, there would be no ps move or kinnect, and I’m surprised the ps4 sells at all, considering there really isn’t anything noteworthy on there at all right now

      • Ninjatendo_forever

I can see companies attempting to make PS4 pretty games and going bankrupt for one game alone. People don’t realize the amount of effort it takes to make those “awesome” graphics…. PS4 games wont be cheaper thats for sure. No way can they get their ROI priced at 60 dollars.

        • Capt. Smoker

It’s happening too often lately for my liking, which means less games of great quality, which equals me smoking alone in a dark corner wanting to cry, graphics shouldn’t matter that much to people, I swear, people would buy a game with a giant turd on the cover, so long as you could see every grain of corn.

          • Ninjatendo_forever

            LOL yeah for sure.

I mean graphics were the rage in the SNES VS SEGA days because we wanted to see awesome graphics and content; but in todays world… it doesn’t matter anymore; In my opinion anyway. either way; I only buy Nintendo for the fact that they do make really cool games and neat combinations of ideas with their hardware.

          • Capt. Smoker

Graphics have really hit there limit now, unless these companies are mega rich, they should focus more on gameplay instead, I remember when I first saw a cutscene on Chrono Cross, my eyes opened wide and my chin was stuck to the floor, graphics still wow me, but not to that extent anymore, it’s usually just a bonus, people will moan about something either way though :p and I agree about Nintendo, I remember Pikmin being something I’d never seen before and anything similar I’ve seen since just can’t hit those heights.

          • Arthur Jarret

I liked overlord though (the wii and DS ones not so much) – it was a pretty solid pikmin clone.

          • Capt. Smoker

I enjoyed overlord too, the minions had me pissing my pants in hysterics, I didn’t mind the Wii game, but I thought 1 & 2 on ps3 were obviously better

      • Viktor Araujo

You and nintendo think alike, and both are wrong, as i once was.
Nintendo thinks that only good games sells consoles.

The truth is that good games do sell consoles, but so does a good marketing campaign. I’m not saying i like this, but it is the way the world is.

        • Mario

          Which I hate.

    • Adrian

Just because a system has good (better) graphics…doesn’t mean that it can’t have robust games with amazing content. At all. And I’m saying this as a WiiU owner who doesn’t plan to get a PS4 for a long time.

      • Ninjatendo_forever

yeah but with the development costs, the actual “game” portion seems to go out the window.

        • matthew garcia

I believe there are many exclusives from playstation that u should give a try. The graphics are amazing and I believe u will be suprised by the excellent gameplay

          • Ninjatendo_forever

yeah I emulated PS2 games last year to catch up on cool games. I’m not saying that PS4 or PS3 sucks, its just the idea that seems to go around that PS4 is WAY BETER than a Wii U just because it has more “power”… thats the SNES vs SEGA argument, and frankly like Captain said.. graphics have reached a point where you just can’t tell that a droplet of water is rendered just right to reflect real time lighting on the perfectly rendered blades of grass… if we don’t care about that in real life how is it that we should care in a game?

I don’t hate on PS products, just the perception

          • matthew garcia

Ps4 definitely is not way better then wii u just has a different aim towards there games. They just make games that are more dramatic or sad or angry. People with more emotional problems lol. Nintendo is definitely more for the happy crowd

  • Frankie

Donkey Kong sold about 36,000 in it’s first week not 50,000. The Wii U sold 308,000 in it’s first week, but came out in November which is a better time for video games. Still this is a good sign for Nintendo in the region.

    • blindtiger

it was my understanding that it was 36k for first 2 days… 50k for the week

      • Frankie

Wasn’t it only available for 2 days of the week?

  • Ducked

PS4 dominance in Japan. Now hurry up and get those Japanese titles like Deep Down, and Final Fantasy XV released, so I’ll have a reason to buy a PS4

And the 3DS isn’t the best selling system this week. Haven’t seen that in months.

  • ghhghgh

love the Wii u ,don’t need another blue ray player from the ps4 ,that’s why I got my ps3 for…..

    • oontz

It’s a lot more than a bluray player.

      • Jaymes Deen

Yes that’s is correct, it also plays Knack.

  • CCM

It’s strange. I went from being a blatent, blindly loyal Nintendo fanboy back in the GameCube era, to an Xbox guy then a PlayStation guy.

I still bought the Wii U at lauch though. Didn’t really play it all that much in it’s first year (thanks to a severe lack of software). I pre-ordered and purchased the PS4 this past November. I’ve played Resogun and some of the other free PS+ games, I’ve purchased Killzone Shadowfall, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, CoD Ghosts and Tomb Raider Definitive Edition. I also have the PS Vita and while Remote Play is very cool, I find I don’t really use the Vita as a standalone system.

However now that the hype of the “next gen” consoles has died off, I’m finding myself going back to my Wii U and 3DS for my gaming needs these days. Because truth be told, there isn’t a game on the PS4 or Xbox One that even compares to Super Mario 3D World or Zelda A Link Between Worlds in terms of sheer quality. Nevermind Pikmin 3, Bravely Default, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze or others.

Are the AAA blockbusters coming for PS4? Yes. However I’m just glad I have my Nintendo consoles to play in-between waiting on the next big thing to justify my $400 PS4.

    • Arthur Jarret

Personally, I managed to fill the first year just with Monster Hunter. It’s awesome.

Okay, okay… I also have a 3DS, Vita, PS3 and a load of older system for which I still have a few hundred games on my wishlist…

    • oontz

I love my ps4/wiiu combo! Best of both worlds!

    • Jonathan George Anaya

The hype died for the pS4 bcaz it has NO NEXT GEN GAMES. X1 launched with 4 Killer Apps and Sony had Killzone…

I have both a X1 and WiiU but my WiiU collects dust while my X1 is used everyday for Killer Instinct, Forza, and Dead Rising Multiplayer…
…well, I lied. The Wii U is played by my kids when the tablet and laptop aren’t available

      • Jaymes Deen

If you have dust problems in your house, I suggest you talk to a contractor so they can try and plug whatever hole you have in your house.

        • Jonathan George Anaya

          Figure of Speech.
Currently the only game that intrigued me was Pikmin 3. I found every Heart Piece in WW back on the GCN, hate the pseudo-3D in Mario World, NSMB was garbage (the SNES levels looked better for crying out loud and was innovative), and not a fan of W101.
Why did I buy a WiiU then? To support Nintendo’s install base and in preparation of MK8/Smash

        • Arthur Jarret

Plug a hole? Dust problems mainly happen due to lack of proper ventilation. He should open a window sometimes, instead!

E3 is going to be crucial for the Wii U. Zelda has to be huge. F-ZERO wouldn’t hurt either…

    • Gameonfool

I think we will get more than that

      • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

Well we hope so. Maybe a Metroid, a new Kirby game,…

        • Gameonfool

Well zelda is confirmed to be shown and Yoshi was announced ages ago so that should be there too and I’m sure there will be a couple more, it would take a while for metroid and retro have only just finished donkey kong so I got a feeling that ninty will have a star fox to show

          • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

Yeah! Yarn Yoshi, Zelda, Start Fox, Metroid, F-ZERO…

          • Tim van Broekhoven

X!!! That’s the only thing I can think about

  • Ninjatendo_forever

BTW, the bundle I got was from neweeg: 339USD for deluxe + zelda HD + W101 + ninja Gaiden seems like a sweet deal…. shoulda bought it when it was 279USD, but still, its a sweet deal for 339…..

the only hassle is waiting for the long delivery if you’re cheap like me…

  • thedeciderU

    hahaha knack

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

    As expected.

  • Alex Damer

Is the Xbox One launched in Japan?

    • oontz

      No

  • Mario

Doesn’t seem like sales of the WiiU had changed much since the PS4 launched.

  • oontz

I have always wondered how they compile this data. Do all the stores that sell video games provide the sales data to media crate? Are the sales tied into some sort of central server that’s updated daily? It just seems like a lot of data to process every week. I’ve been to japan several times and they have a ton of gaming shops and electronic shops selling games. Anyone know of the actual process?

  • Jonathan George Anaya

Japanese Media Crate also reports that only 30% of PS4 owners bought a game for their new system. Ashley, why wasn’t that added to this news report???

So the PS4 sold less than the Wii U’s first week did on it’s first week. I find that pretty interesting. From the way people talked about it, I was expecting the PS4 to actually sell more on it’s debut than what the Wii U did on it’s debut.
