Mario Kart 8 could be getting a special red case

mario-kart-8-box

With the change of the generation always comes a change in the color of the DVD box. The Xbox 360 went from translucent green to a darker color and the Wii went from white to teal with the Wii U. However, there are always notable exceptions, at least within the Nintendo line up. New Super Luigi U last year saw physical release in a nice green box, while New Super Mario Bros. on Wii was originally introduced in a red box. It looks like Mario Kart 8 could be getting the same treatment, as the box art on the official Nintendo page for the game features the official box art wrapping a red box.

Not too bad, though given the color of the Wii U logo at the top, a teal box might have been preferable for some. Mario Kart 8 will be releasing on May 30, 2014 here in North America.

As someone who has the Wii U deluxe digital promotion, it should be an easy choice deciding how I want to purchase Mario Kart 8. Unfortunately, that box art might make me through out all logic and buy a physical copy anyways.

    • SolarGalaxa

Buy both :) That’s what I plan on doing. (DL first, Box later).

      • companyoflosers

must be nice to have money to burn through. i wish i was you. mean this in the friendliest way possible XD

  • Razo_E

I don’t care, I’ll be downloading it. I don’t get why everyone is clamoring about next gen this, next gen that, high tech technical technologies, but they stick to physical discs that have basically been around since 1974.

    • McBlink

” but they stick to physical discs who have basically been around since 1974.”
I’ll have my physical copy when your games a no longer available for download.

      • Razo_E

But I would have already downloaded it by then. Why would it matter?

        • McBlink

I’m not against digital for those who use it, I download indie games all the time. I’m a game collector so to me physical copies are more important. I understand some people like the convenience of digital, no disk swapping faster load times, cleaner entertainment space. But somewhere along the lines when you needed space on your hard drive and deleted the game, then license runs out, they pull the game, your screwed. This has happened multiple times with virtual console games.

        • Dodge Pribyl

What if that hard drive fails? If a physical copy fails, you would replace it with another, but if the Nintendo servers are down, you’re screwed.

          • Razo_E

Hard drives can be backed up. They’re also not one time use only.

        • Mr Ninty

if you buy digital games and delete from your harddrive you dont own them anymore until you download them again. so lets say its the year 2025 and xboxlive for xbox 360 is down for good. all your games that you have bought digitaly and not on your hdd will be gone forever. while my nes from 1987 will keep playing games until i forget to feed him small children

    • Kevin Sepulveda

      100% agree,

    • PaulRuddsHair

Although the price of memory has gone down considerably, it is still a significant investment to add enough of it to house a large number of downloaded games.

    • Alex

Because physical copy are more valuable than digital since you can sell it, buy it cheaper at some stores, and it will last a very long time.

    • thedeciderU

i know it’s going to happen, but i like browsing my shelf of games, and knowing that i have full ownership of the content.

  • Koczk

I love that we care about this stuff – and I don’t mean that sarcastically.

I’ll confess that I’m one of those people who likes my stack of games to look ‘cohesive.’ It’s so obsessive-compulsive, but I don’t care. I’m a gamer, and I know what I like. Still, I’ll never be one to complain about a red box, either.

    • FIreproof_actual

      “We” don’t…you obviously do.

      • Koczk

How is life under the bridge?

    • ETeach

Agreed. Sometimes it’s the little things :)

  • McBlink

Could be salmon colored for all I care, as long as the game is good.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t see how casing matters all that much. Odd news imo.

      • thedeciderU

i can see why some don’t mind, but greatest hits, player’s choice, etc. game cases look like shit in my opinion. i usually don’t buy them unless i plan to reprint the original cover. but…that’s because i’m sane.

    • ETeach

Calling it. The WiiUS is gonna have Salmon cases as the norm.

      • thedeciderU

that would be awesome, and tasty.

  • Kevin Sepulveda

I will be downloading this game as I do all my games. I love the easy access to my games just by touching an app on my game pad. I never have to get up or find a place to put all my games. I like things clean and simple so the less stuff I have the better for me :D

    • Mr Ninty

you should see my roome. i am the complete opposite of you

    • SolarGalaxa

This will be one of the only ones I download. I play the hell out of Mario Kart and don’t want to kill the disc. However, I will, get the box version one day for collectible purposes.

      • tronic307

That’s how I keep ‘em sealed.

    • companyoflosers

AND youll be supporting nintendo better by ensuring all the money goes to them instead of greedy retailers XD

      • Kevin Sepulveda

        yay ;D lol

  • desgraciado79

I’m surprised they didn’t go with a white case, just to keep the consumer confusion going.

  • Sultan 7

I am all for boxes… can’t take digital purchases to a friends house or a different Wii u… plus having the collection stack up is priceless… this is of course MHO.

    • Hobo

Same here, if your Wii U breaks, you still got the games in the case so when it’s repaired you aren’t totally screwed plus Nintendo makes some pretty snazzy cases and I love to put them in plain sight for all to see! Though this is a bit of a let down! They mine as well have used this for the case if they wanted to make it hideous:

  • C4

MK Double Dash also had a red box edition at least in europe.

I don’t know… [strike]baby blue[/strike] teal is fine. Luigi U sticks out in my Wii U collection (probably in everyones ;) ) . Then again I did hope for a golden WW HD box last year… and colored Pro Controllers which I still hope for :)

    • readypembroke

New Super Mario Bros Wii had red cases and so did Mario Kart DS. Mario and Sonic at the 2012 Olympic games had a yellow case. NSLU was pretty cool with the green case and its label art too. Thought it was pretty awesome!!

  • SolarGalaxa

May 14th, not just in North America, it’s launching globally :)

  • DragonSilths

So…what happed with AE Games and their Wii U game reveal? I guess it was all a hoax then…

    • Petri

I was expecting someone building April fools joke, but I guess he couldn’t come up with anything good, and gave up.

      • DragonSilths

The guy gave a hint, but the hint picture looks like it was made by a 5 year old in Paint lol.

  • bizzy gie

    Teal looks more greenish blue.

The Wii U casing is maybe baby blue or sky blue.

    • Mr. Hobo

      I think its turquoise.

      • bizzy gie

Turquoise looks almost exactly like teal except a bit more green.

I do think that it’s closer than the baby and sky blue I suggested.

        • rp17

Lol I love how you care so much about the color XD I think the cases are somewhere between turquoise and sky blue

          • bizzy gie

It seems to be more cyan, but a bit lighter.

            It’s between A and B.

      • thedeciderU

yeah, pretty turquoise, maybe some cyan as seen below?

        • bizzy gie

Yeah. Between cyan and turquoise definitely.

  • Zero

Yo Koczk, pay no mind to the rude commentz-there are a lot of very unhappy people out there that despise everyone else’s joy-especially when it can be gained through something as simple as the color of a game’s box- they are so miserable and joy escapes them so they really hate to see someone find joy so easily- I for one would like the box to blue simply because of the cover art for MK8 but I do like the fact that Nintendo is doing something special for this upcoming release, can’t wait to play it!!! In closing, find joy where ever you can Koczk and all you haters could learn a lesson here on the simple joys in life-

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

    Hot!

  • justin476

It looks sharp. The game looks incredible too!

  • Guest

    this looks better though

  • Guest

    this looks better though….

  • ~OMEGA~

    this looks better though……..

    • thedeciderU

if they keep the teal over the red case it will look like they fucked up…

      • ~OMEGA~

what do you mean? the case is teal?

        • thedeciderU

usually the wiiu cases are teal to match the wiiu emblem on the box art that dips down at the top. i was saying if they use the teal box art dip with the wiiu emblem but use a red case underneath it doesn’t seem aesthetically pleasing, like they didn’t give it enough thought or something. does that make any more sense?

          • ~OMEGA~

yeah sorry this makes more sense now :) also black would look great! Gmcube (a user on the ign forums) photoshopped this:

          • thedeciderU

i wish all the wii u box art/packaging looked like this

          • ~OMEGA~

it’d be awesome if it did, too bad Nintendo is as stubborn as all hell

          • iamserious

This one I like the best.

      • Hobo

Precisely, the case is hideous because of the blue on the front, which may be there because Nintendo is scared of their games looking like Playstation Greatest Hit cases with the same red! If you don’t know:

        • thedeciderU

thanks, i own heavy rain greatest hits red case, so i’m familiar.

if they use red, they better not use that teal at the top of the box art. that would be pretty fugly.

      • jake

OR there is gonna be a error game case on ebay for 5000$….. lol

        • thedeciderU

          hahaha so true

    • ETeach

I wonder how many people will take the original art out of the case and just replace it with this when they get the game. I might, actually.

      • ~OMEGA~

i’ll have to ask the guy who made this if he can make one that is a full wrap-around if so i’ll post it here

        • ETeach

and if so I’ll be saving it ;)

          • ~OMEGA~

i’ve got an alternate cover for mario kart 8!

          • ETeach

            Do want.

    • tronic307

      Day one!

    • Jaimillo

New Super Luigi U did it before, changing it for green

  • Ducked

Can’t be real. If the box was red, then so would the logo. Like Super Luigi U. I would prefer an all red box though…

  • LevenThumps

That’s great… I guess? Personally, I’m more interested in the game itself than the box it comes in.

  • http://www.Idontownawebsite.com/ Govnah ShinySkiddo

thats loke ugly… with the blue if it all red i be happy

  • Tim van Broekhoven

That’be cool. Just like Double Dash had.

  • Shaise

Woah! It would be great if the Wii U box art on the top was red as well though!

  • Shaise

These games are tempting me now! I was anticipating Watch Dogs for Wii U. Then it got delayed again specifically for Wii U. And now I’ve got these games to tempt me.

    WHAT DO I DO??!!!

    • NyallJodhan

Buy them as they come. Save for the later ones.

  • Shota

what color will be smash bros ?

    • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

Wii U: Blue(but not the same Blue). 3DS: Red

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

    Cool :D

  • samic2

Ew no. Game cases with different colors always stick out like a sorethumb in the shelve.
