Mario Kart 8 retro track comparisons [VIDEO]

While Mario Kart 8 will feature several all new kart tracks for players to abuse each other on, it also contains several retro tracks from previous games for those familiar with the franchise. Noted YouTube personality GameXplain has taken the time to compare these retro tracks from the previous version of Mario Kart to the versions revealed in the trailers so far. Currently known retro tracks include:

  • Mario Circuit
  • Tick Tock Clock
  • DK Jungle
  • Grumble Volcano

What do you think of the new versions of these retro tracks? Are you pleased with the graphics and improvements that we’ve seen?

    should be a great time

  • Christian Schoff

ARGH! WHY? Why is DK Jungle in every single freaking game?

    • val berger

Just in case you’re referring to Tropical Freeze, then let’s clear this right away: BECAUSE ITS A DK GAME ”:**”=”ยง(SJSH!!!! !!!!!! ! !!

      • Christian Schoff

You’re a special kind of stupid.

        • Shota

says the one complaining about a SINGLE DK jungle stage -_-

        • val berger

and you are a bit simpleminded, incapable of understanding some bad joke, deciding to attack without reason. have a nice day bub.

    • Arthur Jarret

It isn’t… there’s several other DK-inspired tracks that aren’t DK jungle. Snes / GBA didn’t get any DK themed tracks.

For N64, it was D.K’s jungle parkway – which reappeared as a retro track in mario kart wii.

For Gamecube it was D.K.mountain, which reappeared in wii’s retro tracks as well.

For DS we got DK Pass, which was remade for mariokart 7

For wii we got DK summit, which hasn’t gotten a retro track remake yet

Finally, for 3DS we got DK jungle, which is retrofied on Wii U.

      • MetroidZero

D.K.’s Jungle Parkway was my favorite DK track.

      • Christian Schoff

It seems to me that we’ve gotten the one with the yacht and coconut throwing monkeys in every one except super.

        • Arthur Jarret

Hm, that’s odd – because I’m not even sure any track is used more than twice. Not sure about daisy cruiser, but wasn’t that only Gamecube and 3DS?

They do always have a track with a DK theme… but they have one with a wario theme every time too.

The similar themes do make it seem samey… except something like summit (ice level) – or minecarts, sunken ships for wario instead of a stadium/dirt track-like level

  • gmanextreme9

There’s also 3 more retro tracks. GCN Dry Dry Desert, 3DS Music Park, and 3DS Piranha Plant Slide.

    • http://www.GameXplain.com Andre Segers

Yep, which is why we made this video quite some time ago =)

      • Shota

are you the real andre? it’s me narutopet112 :)

        • Skelterz

its clearly not the real andre segers, But do you want to see something funny i found a ond review from when killzone 2 came out and he ripped the hell out of it check it out, i think he was with IGN at the time not sure though.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QygR2QIayUA

          • Shota

hmm didn’t know that thanks, pal!

        • Skelterz

its genius how he trolls the game i played killzone 2 when it first came out it was generic so he’s basicly saying whats the fuss about there trying to damage control it and he’s like nah i don’t think so.

  • Derek

they are eventually going to run out of tracks from the older games.

    • steveb944

They’re going to have 8 games to choose from, why would they run out?

    • Rick van der Linde

Every new game is eventually an older game, so how are they gonna run out of tracks? ;-)

      • Derek

I’m saying that they are running out of tracks to remake in the oldest games like Mario kart 64 and super Mario kart.

    • Nintenjoe82

hopefully they will include every single retro track in the new one

  • val berger

first time in ages that a I’m kinda hyped for a Mario Kart game.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

      Same. Finally something worth buying.

      • AkaLink77

        Yah!
        And MK7 was soooo…. meh.
It got dull and even boring after like the first month i got it.
You cant see how fast you are going, you cant see behind you, first person mode was too small, noone used gyro settings, lame Mario Kart Channel, getting 3 stars is meaningless and unrewarding, the only thing you get for beating the game is a new starting screen, gold parts were a complete rip off, streetpasses got boring,
Online was lame…still only having 2 modes, with Extra boring spectate(waiting) mode… (while spectating) you can only view one player and you cant see what lap they are in or how much time has past or how many people are joining,
There’s still no mic chat or any decent communications– just those lame default messages within communities, communities got dull and sharing them were impossible with that huge ass code, too much “please wait” screens, lagging opponents effect you when they appear and disappear in front of you…
theres more things wrong with MK7 but above is enough of a handful of what they need to improve in MK8.

      • Magnus Eriksson

I dont see that big difference between the two versions in the comparison. Look kind of equal to me. Maybe its because Im a Nintendo fan and therefore is used to deny reality, or that Nintendo is just repackaging old shit in a new wrapping. Hard to tell. Could be both.

        • Guest

I was referring to the Mario Kart brand especially, not necessarily WiiU games.
On the WiiU, there would’ve been enough worth getting hyped so far, Nintendo just managed to fuck every attempt of marketing up, so it just didn’t work out. Only with W101 they actually tried to create hype but didn’t understand that this game isn’t just appealing to the masses.
Especially how they couldn’t hype Super Mario 3D World is quite something to remember. Nintendo not able to really blow up a Mario game. un-freaking-believable. Especially considering that I really love this game more than the past 3 Super Mario Games.

        • jrob23

          troll fail is fail

      • Skelterz

Donkey kong you’ve got it pre-ordered right, Read the reviews because were in for a treat.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Maybe its because its your only option? With these painful slow releases I think that even Spin the bottle creates hype… but yeah, MK8 looks ok I guess, finally something on par with PS3 :)

      • val berger

      • Enumerating Wishes

1080p 60fps with lighting and polygon counts like that? Not to forget Nintendo is aiming for 4-player split screen no framerate compromise.

I can only hope that you’re being sarcastic :P

  • Diaz

I’m not liking that railing on the DK jungle’s entrance to the temple.

  • Wosty

Mario Kart 8 releases May 30, 2014, not May 20. Might want to fix that…

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

…Meh, WiiU version looks the worst of them all, but I gotta rewatch the video on the big screen instead of on the small gamepad screen…

(I’m being sarcastic, so ya know)

    • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

THE GRAPHIX ARE TERRIBLE THEY COULD EASLY RUN ON THE ORIGINAL WII THATS WHAT YOU GET WHEN YOU RELEASE A SYSTEM TWO GENERATON LATE WII U LASTGEN CONFIRMED !!!!!!!!!111

      • Zackary Bruley

        w/e, troll

        • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

This comment was sarcastic, so you shouldn’t take it seriously.

          • Simon Stevens

I was gonna say, the graphics may be low level in comparison to ps4 ans xb1 but on par with Wii? lol that would make the ouya a superior console, in terms of gaming library…. it probably is lol basing that on emulators, naturally ^^, by the way, a bit of advice in the future, put a :p at the end of your sarcastic sentence rookie mistake lol

          • Dimitri Soto

Well the games right now on xone and ps4 don’t look that much more amazing (I have wii u and ps4) ya down the line they will make soon really good graphic games but wii u games will get better graphically too

          • Simon Stevens

I think in terms of subtle difference, there’s a big gap, Nintendo can still look as flashy, colorful and beautiful as anybody though but I think when it comes to surroundings and such, you can kind of tell the ps4 is better, doesn’t really matter to me though, so long as the games are good

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          My goodness. So touchy.

  • steveb944

HD looks AMAZING! I thought 7 looked great but this blows it out of the water.

  • Rogelio

May 20th Ashley. Just pointing it out

    • Ducked

It actually comes out on May 30th, she got that wrong too

      • Rogelio

        Wait what?

  • AkaLink77

Actually, its May 30th Ash. :P

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

      linux

    • Nathan C.

We wish it came out May 20th. :/

      • AkaLink77

lol 10 days earlier would be that much better because i cant wait…

  • Blaze247

    This is VERY promising. :-)

Won’t care about game droughts once this is released

    • Zombie_Andrew

Game droughts? I made this to help people stop thinking the Wii U doesn’t have any games https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2W9BrVEKMQ

Sure some of the games featured aren’t out yet I’ll give people that

      • Nintenjoe82

I am usually quick to tell the kids that they’ll never know a game drought like the N64’s!! I don’t think there is a problem with content on Wii U, even the first party content is close to as good as the Wii’s at the same point and the indie selection is fantastic. On the other hand, off-TV makes me finish games much faster so I need more content to keep me happy! The only real difference between the Wii and Wii U situation is that Wii was so popular, there was never any doubt that more games would come. I distinctly remember the DS getting far more games announced, even when the Wii was peaking, so a lot of the fans grumbling about Wii U can only really be annoyed about 3rd party retail support.

In the meantime, I am trying to recommend Uncharted Waters: New Horizons (SNES) to as many people as possible. It’s an insanely deep SNES strategy pirate sim rpg. I could probably be playing it til Zelda U is released and still not be a master.

      • jrob23

        great job!

  • Kyle

Glad there making this system seller game look REALLY good. This may be the best mario kart yet! Each trailer gets better and better.

  • Mithiragi

Grumble Volcano looks pretty sexy. Looking forward(on the road) to this game.

  • Mendoza Manuel

This is by far the coolest story, brothers.

  • Nathan Verbois

If nothing else, this video shows just how gorgeous Mario Kart 8 looks, even in slow motion. Love the detailed particle effects for the drift boost where the flames are star shaped.

  • Swampert Master

You guys at Wii U daily are sure big GameXplain fans! Well, so am I! They’re a great channel that really looks at games and trailers in-depth, and mostly Ninetendo things too.

  • Rinslowe

What do I think? I think Mario Kart 8 looks gorgeous! organic! with tons of good, good times to be had!
    Those retro tracks, gravy…

  • Clipo

i only want to play that fraking game, the hype is too much for my nerves ;)

  • iamserious

The last MarioKart I played was the Gamecube version and those tracks were short. After playing Sonic All Stars (which I loved) I sure hope this new MarioKart can compete at least on the level design side of things (longer more involved tracks).

    • DeStarfighter

What?! Sonic all stars had a nearly non existent level design. they put almost no thought at all on that game. It was merely a hastly developed game to speed up the “3” Sonic wii u exlusive games deal with nintendo.

  • crocodileman94

They better add Bowser’s Castle form Double Dash. My favorite course of all time.

  • Mithiragi
  • Skelterz

    DKTF TOMORROW EXCITED!!!

  • CaesarGood

I aint lookin at none of this spoiler shit til I get the game…

    • AkaLink77

me too its very difficult not to look though.

  • Adecentboy777

I loved it on SNES and on N64 but got tired of Nintendo bringing the same stuff differently packed, I got kinda bored of this game. Nintdendo please give me something completely new!!!

  • Greg Lanciotti

Ashley, your writing has gotten better. Im proud of you!

  • CuriousUser

    There’s more.

  • CuriousUser

I think what you may say is GBA Mario Circuit may actually be SNES Mario Circuit 4. Was there a bend before the Finish Line, and that’s a track I know would appear.
