Nintendo is developing a mobile app for smartphones

app

Nintendo has officially announced that it is working on an app for smartphone devices.

At a business presentation in Tokyo last week, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata discussed a mobile application that he said could share “the value of our entertainment offerings, thus encouraging more people to participate in Nintendo platforms.”

While this vague description doesn’t sound particularly enthralling, the implications of Nintendo-making-apps-for-smartphones is instead what we should be considering. There is so much potential!

If that’s not enough, check out Iwata’s later statement:

I have not given any restrictions to the development team, even not ruling out the possibility of making games or using our game characters. However, if you report that we will release a Mario on smart devices, it would be a completely misleading statement.

This news comes only days after Nintendo more or less denied any plans to develop games for smartphones.

Finally, he added that their intention is to release their first application before the end of this year.

Wii U sales aren’t lending us nor Nintendo much hope; but it seems that, when things stop going their way, Nintendo’s vision and creativity expand ten-fold. Could this new direction be the start of something huge? Leave us your thoughts in the comments!

Beside what everybody say, I would totally buy a “Nintendo phone”.

    Because Nintendo.

    • Levi Johansen

I’m pretty sure that the next DS system will have 3G/4G connectivity. Which would mean it would take SIM-cards.
      – The steps to making the DS also a phone would then be few.

I also expect that they’ll make the development platform more suitable for simple app-developement (HTML5?) and also make the development tools accessible and free.

Then we would probably see apps for facebook, instagram and similar things rather quickly.

This move to start developing apps for the smart phone marked could simply be an excuse to have a few apps allready developed when the next DS comes and also to allow a development team to gain experience with this kind of app development, which is also valuable research for making the development tools for the next DS.

      • Shy Guy

That’s actually not a bad idea, if Nintendo released a gaming console with 3G/4G compatibility and social media links plastered all over the menus I would find out what it’s like to want Nintendo to release a cheaper console without features that turn me off of the console.

I was hoping we could make it at least few more years (if not forever) without links to intrusive social media sites plastered all over console menus and the need for a monthly plan with a cell phone company in order to enjoy features on my latest Nintendo console, but I guess that’s “the times”, although stuff like that would seriously make me question if I want to buy such a Nintendo console in the first place…. after all theirs always loads classic consoles with thousands of games I remember fondly and that have absolutely none of distractions of the “connected” lifestyle.

        • Levi Johansen

Nintendo would never make 3G/4G a requirement. (Like the Vita had)

Nor make a subscription that you need to use the system. (Like Xbox Live and PS Plus)

Nor would they plaster social media buttons all over the menus. Social media would just be apps to download. Not even pre-installed.

They are not like Sony and Microsoft!

          EDIT: Better grammar and formulation.

    • Josiah Parsons

      Why all the Downvotes?

      • Shy Guy

At least 21 people myself included do not want to see Nintendo platforms turned into iphones.

        • Josiah Parsons

          hmmmmm…
          ok.

    • jay

Nintendo would make the first phone that isn’t an “iPhoney” since 2007.

  • Shagrath1983

Make a nintendo phone in the shape of the Gameboy SP with the complete collection of old gameboy games like pokemon and advanced wars and i would totally buy it.

    • Pilu Skifte Grønvold

that would be awesome to the max!

    • Guest

I’d rather have a big brick of a phone shaped like the original Game Boy, whatever happened to big phones, not all of us have asian tiny hands that are optimal for manipulating devices barely bigger than our thumbs put side by side.

The last time I saw this sort of conflict of design philosophy was between the much larger American automobiles vs much smaller Asian imports, and because the Asian imports won out my knees now come up around the steering wheel of half the import cars on the market today.

  • Shota

apps okay, games no fuck no

  • Gabe Hoffman

    Did anyone hear about Mario.ca?

    • Shota

      yes

    • readypembroke

On that site right now and it doesn’t work for crap.

    • That guy who hates Spike

Well, at least Nintendo of Canada know how to advertise…

  • Shota

fucked up , how will this help wiiu sales.

  • Marcel Kleine

Well, we still don’t have the Miiverse app :P

  • Simon Stevens

I would be surprised to see games on there, I hope they haven’t listened to idiots like Pachter, his say has proved to have no value in it whatsoever, considering every prediction is wrong and completely based on the current market rather than the future, give me money to state the obvious, it’s easy, I’ve seen Sony games pop up on mobile lately, not the classics either, Ratchet and clank and Unchartec have micro games out, somehow, I doubt this would work for them.

  • http://www.gamesobscura.com/ themizarkshow

If they can get something like the Playstation app on smartphones, where you can watch videos, message friends (or in their case, do MiiVerse stuff), buy games/apps and remote download it, etc… I would be in heaven. Especially if it worked for 3DS and WiiU.

  • metalpants

I hope they make some sort of app with videos, information and other snippets about their platform games. That way, if you want more of it, you gotta get the console, *trollface*.

Or maybe they should take advantage of other devices (a la Smartglass) and have the Wii U become the Nintendo hub where you can connect your device to and interact with their games. Then maybe, you could do stuff with your phone on the road that will translate to game data when you bring it back to the hub, like Streetpass.

Honestly, the 3DS has some great ideas going for it. But its biggest obstacle is the fact that most people see it as a toy (Wii U as well)… add smartphone functionality and boom; you get a relevant device. If Nintendo adds that level of “relevance” to their devices (or make something completely new that we didn’t even know we needed, lol) they’ll be set. They already have that “secret sauce” going for them… now they just gotta find a truly effective way to spread it to more users.

  • Vinicius

Watch out guys, the troll is on the loose!

  • InterTreble

When Nintendo denies something, be sure they will announce it later! ;)

    • readypembroke

      Like the price cut.

      • Saleh Sbeiti

        What’s up with the dislikes?

        • readypembroke

That is what I am wondering too. Iwata said they wouldn’t do a price cut on the Wii U then months later, there was one!

    • LightupmyLife

Announcing is one thing. Following through on those announcements, matter more.

  • Justin Gray

I wonder how many people have this page favorited on the Xbone browser so they can stop by every day and downvote everything… About all and Xbone is good for at the moment.

    • Shy Guy

Their is a conspiracy, among the Sony and Microsoft camps it is known that for the person who posts the most negative comments about Nintendo on websites a free month of Playstation Network or Xbox Live awaits them.

      • Ben Kapferer

        Source?

        • Guest

          My Cartman bong said so.

    • Jonathan George Anaya

Don’t hate on a Next Gen console that gets AAA games. Where’s the MS Love?

      • Shy Guy

Sorry bruh, no love for the Cablebox One.

      • Josiah Parsons

        LOL

      • jay
        • lonewolf88

*reads of the reviews* hmm so it works better with a touch screen hm? *goes over to Xbone* *tries connecting wii U gamepad* Kinect connect my wII U Gamepad!

      • Justin Gray

Don’t think it isn’t from a lack of trying. MS locked all three of my kids’ accounts and want 50cents apiece to unlock them for security. Then they say they are just obeying the law. Well we looked up that law and all it says is that they need confirmation I am an adult not 50cents apiece. Its just MS shaking down its consumers so they have can have back something they already paid for. Everybody I know who has an Xbone is playing Ghosts and BF4. If those are the AAA games you are referring to you make no case to buy the system.

Just beware. Once there is enough Xbones in circulation DRM policies will then become the norm and fanboys will take it like they always have.

        • Jonathan George Anaya

Nintendo billed me $1 for setting up an account for my 11 year old daughter…. Does that make Nintendo money grubbing?
Dead Rising 3, Halo:SA, Forza and Killer Instinct 3 were for me. Peggle 2 was for her. AND, with an X1, anyone in my console gets free Gold. It’s called Home Gold.
PlaceboHead, VanillaSwurl (Eva), Evee Evolved (Evee), Dstroid Beauty (Angelina), L1tt1eG1assV1al (Christy) all get the benefits of Gold and I pay $29.99 a year since I’ve been with Live for 4 years. Sounds like a CRAZY discount from MS of you ask me :) My 11 and 9 yr old daughters, an Ex Wife and my current girlfriend play on a regular basis

          • Justin Gray

Sounds like a crazy discount eh? They are making you pay to access online content. It is a tollbooth at your router and you think you have a good deal. Thanks for the MS commercial though. Nintendo does not charge to set up an N account so that was a lie. Beside all this MS locked accounts I had already paid for in the first place to shake me down for more money. With tens of millions of Xbox live accounts, how much money do they stand to gain from behavior like that? So, to recap, I paid $100 for the year, they agreed, sad they no longer offer family plans six months in, lock my children’s accounts and expect me to pay them again for something they broke contract laws and took from me. Yeah they are giving some good deals.

    • Donaald

Xbox one has no games, confirmed!

  • Ducked

    They better make it soon…

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

This may be a waste of time, but it is Iwata’s time to be exposed and fail. It was bound to happen..he has been too mediocre for awhile now for it not to happen to him in how he runs Nintendo. I respect him only in realm that we are talking about how he has brought quality games to Nintendo, but everything else …nope.

    • Shy Guy

Let’s see you step into the shoes of a CEO who had run Nintendo since 1949 and made the company what it became, then attempt to manage that company and move it forward during a period when said former CEO’s shares in the company and what happens to them is possibly still uncertain, and your iconic lead game designer who was responsible for most of the games Nintendo is known for is only a few years from retirement, and manage this all in a conservative business culture like Japan’s while a bunch of noisy self entitled western consumers who probably have no intention of buying a Nintendo console in the first place scream about how Nintendo should be doing this or that.

  • Skelterz

It won’t be a proper game it will just be a taster of marketing for the masses to sink 5 mins into and want more so they buy a wii u.

  • Sonic 2099 The Hedgehog

    a Rumor Right

    • Shy Guy

No apparently the rumor of the day is some woman who I have never heard about before talked to Ubisoft who refused to comment on Watchdogs for the Wii U so now that means it’s not coming to the Wii U, or something…

Hell if I know, it’s getting hard to keep up with all the rumor mongering

  • Magnus Eriksson

Pachter was right all the time :)

    • Shy Guy

Hello Magnus, my finger was getting antsy for it’s daily Magnus Eriksson downvote…

Obvious troll is obvious aside I think it’s worth pointing out that the so called “analyst” Margaret Thatch….. sorry Michael Thatch…. dang I can never get it right, Michael Pachter, is being overly critical of Nintendo time and again while fully aware of the sort of things they are dealing with behind the scenes as a company right now that the average pleb is ignorant of and he plays this to his own petty advantage, because the bigger picture is irrelevant to Michael Pachter, he knows full well every time he makes a negative “prediction” about Nintendo his name gets bounced around a little more by both the haters and trolled alike… that is why I say with the utmost confidence that Michael Pachter is a parasitic attention whore of a troll, and I would wish a slow painful death upon him except I believe that to do such a thing would come back on me and cause me to experience a similar experience, and a little toad like Michael Pachter is just not worth that.

      • Magnus Eriksson

But still he was right with the Wii U. He knew it would fail all the time. He also told Nintendo to make mobile phone games – for once Iwata listened :)

        Pachter should run Nintendo. :)

        • Christian Schoff

They’re not making a game. An app is not a game you idiot.

          • Magnus Eriksson

From your profile picture I clearly can see you are not an idiot. And from your eloquent manners I can tell you must be some sort of bright intellectual. I think you must be my leader. Let me follow you.

    • Jonathan George Anaya

That’s the thing; he absolutely nails sales projections and insider knowledge. The only reason why Ninty Fanbots hate him is because he’s speaking the truth. Past Greatness doesn’t make up for their current failures. Nintendo has been comatose for far too long and needs to shake things up again

      • jay

You lost me at “he absolutely nails sales projections and insider knowledge.”
He has a world reknown track record for failing at Nintendo sales projections.
Where have you been the past decade???

      • Rinslowe

        SAY WHAT?

  • Sdudyoy

I always expected Nintendo to release a app of some sort, I would like to be able to buy and start downloading games to my Wii U from my smartphone and PC, maybe It’s a Miiverse app, maybe It’s an Eshop app, It could even be a Club Nintendo app, whatever it is I hope it comes soon.

    • Shy Guy

This Pokebank thing my neighbor keeps talking about sounds like a good candidate for a mobile app that allows viewing, trading, etc.

      • Sdudyoy

Yeah, that’s true, and Gamefreak has released other app’s in the past, it would almost shock me if it didn’t come out.

  • companyoflosers

omg! how much r gaming news sites gonna spam this smart device story?!

  • Maxime Lemieux

Minigames liek the old wario ware and mario party website ? Hell yeah I wnat that !

    • jay

WarioWare on Gamecube was one of the greatest games I’ve ever played.

  • D-Man

Neat! Now I can do Nintendo stuff on my phone! YAY!

  • Kidicarus1

I bet it is the eshop app they were discussing, and possibly ONE mini game.

  • Gabe Hoffman

    Why was my comment deleted?

  • Mario

Why am I seeing so many downvotes lately?

  • Rinslowe

Yes to apps, no to mobile games…

  • Prizm

I am really getting sick of every quote from Iwata’s mouth being corporate double-talk bullshit. He might as well say “This new app will feature blah blee blee blah”.

  • Kevin Wickham

when do we get a nintendo direct?! i know I’m off topic but i just gotta know

  • 2Макс2

Nintendo has been given the 2nd chance (no xbo, ps4 titles in the near half of the year), but what do they do? “Developing a mobile app”? M kart should be released NOW with strong advertising to not f*k up again. It looks like the N deserves what it gets((

    • Christian Schoff

      Shh.

    • GmailIsDown

they also put Mario on Campbell soup cans. I’m not sure how long it has been going on but I just saw a Wii U – Campbell soup joint commercial yesterday on TV and I was like “…whaaaat”

  • Inferno Uprising

I acutally like your app. i think that all nintedno should do now is have store so that you can buy it on your phone and then all you have to do when you get home is download the game.

  • Mason742

well Wii U can already download in sleep so…
