Miyamoto announces the end of the Year of Luigi

luigi-yes

We’ve known that the Year of Luigi wasn’t ending at the stroke of midnight, January 1st, 2014, but it looks like Nintendo is finally bringing an end to the green festivities. Shigeru Miyamoto has announced via the Year of Luigi Miiverse community that the celebration will be over in March. Last year brought us several new Luigi games, including New Super Luigi U, Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, Luigi’s Mansion 2: Dark Moon, and Dr. Luigi.

The Year of Luigi community on Miiverse will close March 18, so if you’d like to pay your last respects to the man in green, be sure and do so before then. Here’s Miyamoto’s full post on Miiverse:

“Almost a year has passed since I announced the Year of Luigi, marking the 30th anniversary of Luigi’s debut. Thanks to everyone’s kind support, we were able to release many Luigi games over the course of the year. I hope everyone continues to cheer for the green brother!

“However, all good things must come to an end, and the Year of Luigi will conclude on March 18. From this date on, the Year of Luigi Community and its Developers’ Room will sadly no longer accept new posts or comments. (The exact date and time is listed in each community’s description.) That means there’s one more month to go. I hope everyone continues to share their thoughts on Luigi with people from around the world!”

We don’t know how successful Nintendo considered the year of Luigi, considering the ups and downs experienced by the company, but perhaps this will be the year of Cranky Kong? Who knows!

I’d just like 2014 to be the YEAR OF NINTENDO for real.

    • jjbredesen

Yeah, just hope they can pull it of.

With MK8 and Smash, they should get the casuals and hardcore smashers to join and with Hyrule Warriors more of the Zelda fanbase.

DK:TF is appartly selling fantastic, so i think this year could be really good, if they just fix the advertising, and we still need more games for the rest of the year. And also fix the god dam VC!

      • LevenThumps

Hopefully Nintendo will reveal games for the second half of the year at E3 (or sooner)

        • jjbredesen

          Yeah, they need to.

        • darkcreap

Hopefully much sooner. As a lifelong Nintendo fan, I am really worried.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Here is a list of what Nintendo needs to do:
        1. Make an ass kicking commercial on TV that shows ALL exclusives; SMB3DW, Zelda WW HD, Pikmin 3, W101, NSMBU, NSLU, DKCF and MK8 and Smash coming up with Bayo2 and X of course.

        2. Take VC seriously and fill it with content. Make a commercial that shows all the classics that ONLY can be played on Wii U (legally). Make Wii U into an ALL NINTENDO SYSTEM

        3. Make Virtual Console NES and SNES into a costfree service that Wii U owners can enjoy instead of price cuts on the console. Make this a selling point. People can get them for free anyways, but here they can have it legally.

        4. Make GCN titles and N64 titles available on VC. Release one every week, and make some fuzz about it. This is games many have not played. It can fill up empty space between releases.

        5. Pay other companies to make games as Kid Icarus, Paper Mario, Metroid 2D for you.

        Sadly it wont happen.

        • erich80

Well… Recently Iwata said that Nintendo will be more flexible with regard to licensing some of its franchises to 3rd party developers. As we have yet to know which franchises will be subject of this move, it’s time to cross our fingers and wait for the best.

That being said, I like your #1, #2 and #4. But, unfortunately, #3 is not business wise sustainable.

          • darkcreap

What I wonder is if they did it soon enough to see enough games in time. I fear Nintendo didn’t see it in advance and that is why 2014 is so dry for the WiiU (in quantity).

I think Nintendo expected better launch momentum and relied too much on third parties, worked comfortably in their first party games and they didn’t realise soon enough that they were not going to have enough output for 2014 and needed to diversify their strategy.

          • ChubbiestLamb6

We’re a month and a half into the year and you’re calling 2014 “so dry”?

          • jjbredesen

It is, we have DK:TF then we have to wait 3 months before we get MK8 and then i guess Hyrule Warriors for Summer and Smash for fall? They could end the year with Zelda U, but thats not enough games….

          • erich80

I agree with you. I also have the perception that they are late already. But let’s never count Nintendo out.

          • Fred

Why do you think #3 is not sustainable business wise? They’ve already put out those NES and SNES games. If that advertise that on the Wii U box and that’s enough to get more people to buy Wii U then it makes itself sustainable because is sells systems and people with systems are much more likely to buy Wii U games than people without systems!

          • erich80

At last, you want to increase the Wii U mindshare. That’s perfectly reasonable. But I do not believe that can be done via unlimited access to VC games – see my reply to Magnus, please.

          • Fred

First of all, it wasn’t that expensive to bring those 69 NES and SNES games to Wii U.
Second of all as for keeping us happy, nobody complains when they buy a game on their PS3 and then PSplus members get it free. If you don’t think that’s enough offer discounts on other VC games. One way they could do this would be to take the amount we spend on NES and SNES and off us $5 off on GBA, N64 and Gamecube titles until we hit that amount (for example if I spent $15 on NES and SNES games then I’d get $5 off my first 3 VC purchases in the GBA, N64, or Gamecube section of VC).
If they don’t like that one there are tons of other similar things they could do for us that would make Nintendo even more money. By that I mean, if they offered me $5 off the next 3 VC purchases I made you’d better believe I’ll make those purchases right away and I’m likely to use the credits to justify buying VC games I wouldn’t have been willing to buy at full price.

          • erich80

Do you realize that being cheap or expensive in the gaming business is relative, right? All that is tied to how profitable a commodity can be.

Please note that I said that they required a budget. I had no word on them being low, or high budget.

You told that “they were not that expensive”. Then, if you have the numbers, please disclose them as raw as they are.

All the idea you develop on getting discounts on VC games is just great – no irony, I liked it. But it does not match with Magnus proposal of letting gamers to have unlimited access to all VC library.

          • Fred

The real question (and I don’t claim to have the answer) is, if Nintendo started offering NES & SNES games free on Wii U would sales of the system and games increase enough to make up for lost profits from not selling NES & SNES games.
If I had to guess, I’d guess it would end up in a small increase, but it’s just a guess I have no evidence to back that up. That’s why I supported the idea because I’d guess that overall it would benefit Nintendo.
If you study economics, you’ll learn that the money NIntendo has already spend bringing NES and SNES games to VC don’t matter. It doesn’t matter if they stent $10 or $10 billion doing it; it’s referred to as a sunk cost. The only things to consider are potential revenue/cost moving forward. Maintaining the current course has no cost and a revenue of $5 per NES game and $8 per SNES ($10 for Earthbound). Shifting to free VC would have a revenue of whatever the increase in game sales that is caused by the hoped for increase in Wii U sales. Nintendo can probably predict how much revenue they’ll get with the current structure, but it would be incredibly difficult to predict the increase in Wii U sales and subsequently the increase in Wii U software sales if they did a free VC so if I were to claim that I knew they would be better off I’d be lying, but I can certain tell you that it seems to me that they’d be better off and I can certainly tell you that if I were Iwata I’d seriously consider the option.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Not true. 3. is the the most business wise sustainable point of them all. Instead of a price cut of 50$ they should keep the price, but introduce an included unlimited access to NES and SNES games. Many reasons to do so. First of all theyre all already very accessible other places through emulators. Second, the feature is very overpriced, there are broad consensus about that. It should have been something like 2-3$ for a NES and 4-5$ a SNES. That equals to 10-25 games, and is much higher than the average VC buyer. Instead of a pricedrop you give 50$ to your own feature. That way you does not lose money on hardware sales, and you do not really lose any money on the digital either as it doesnt cost them anything.Third of all, its a strong selling point towards new customers, and it would make old customers happy. It could be a very much needed rebranding, where ALL NINTENDO SYSTEM becomes an essential part. And they HAVE to go that direction, because they are not supported by any third parties. They must go to their back catalogue. Still they can sell things as GBA, N64, GCN, Wii and DS games while they make some sort of connectivity between 3DS and Wii U.

          • jjbredesen

Got to agree on the VC stuff, and since you already have made great points, they should make them a sort of reward in games etc, for exsample if you beat a mario game you will be given the orginal, and if you collect enough star coins you will be given another etc.

It would make more people want to play the games and you get more content for you money.

As for connectivity, Iwata said they wanted to go in a “Android/IOS” direction when it comes to how there next to consoles are tied toghter, so i am 100% sure that they will share the same OS, or as Zorpix put it “NintendOS”

Next gen i think they will fix VC and make a great console, but this generation it looks like they are not bothered…. So yeah il give Wii U to 2017(18) before a new console is shown….

          • Magnus Eriksson

“… they should make them a sort of reward in games etc, ”

            Thats brilliant.

          • jjbredesen

Thanks :D I really think it would work, donno if you played Sonic Adventures for Dramcast, but it was remade for Gamecube, and there was 100 emblems hidden in stages and in the overworld and for every 10-20 emblems you found you got a Dreamcast/Genesis/Mastersystem/Megadrive game, so it would work, and it would be great.

          • erich80

“if you beat a mario game you will be given the orginal”

Wasn’t it supposed to one own the original to beat it?

          • jjbredesen

No, what i was saying is if you beat a future Mario game you will get the orginal one as a reward.

          • erich80

Thanks for you reply, but I have yet to understand your rationale.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Much better than collecting stamps. It gives you a real reward, and gives the game a new dimension. I think its an amazing idea.

          • erich80

Man, is it that hard to understand that I did not get the idea yet?

Let’s close the case. Too much harshness in so little time.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Harshness? I meant collecting stamps in SM3DW, because thats what you do (and can use them in Miiverse). It was not meant as an insult or anything.

Instead of stampcollecting in SM3DW you should get games, or part of games. That would make it more interesting. That was my point.

          • erich80

The caveat in your statement is the “unlimited access to NES and SNES games”. As of today, there are 69 titles in that category available to purchase.

Each of them took time and, therefore, budget to be ported. Feed the VC demands both time and money. You cannot offer gamers such an unlimited access.

Another problem that comes up is: how keep the consumers that already bought VC games happy with Nintendo. Would it be done by a refund? A credit? Do you see the mess?

In addition, how do you know the VC feature is overpriced?

Also, where are the numbers you claim to have that show the average of VC games bought?

          • Magnus Eriksson

First of all, its NOT PORTS. They are emulated. And no, that doesnt take much time. I know people who have done this for a hobby.

          • erich80

            Magnus, really?

            Copied directly from Wikipedia:

“porting is the process of adapting software so that an executable program can be created for a computing environment that is different from the one for which it was originally designed (e.g. different CPU, operating system, or third party library).”

            Aren’t they ports?

          • Magnus Eriksson

No, they are not ports. Virtual console is an emulator.

            “Official use of emulation[edit]
Due to the demand to play old games on modern systems, consoles have begun incorporating emulation technology.
The most famous of these is Nintendo’s Virtual Console. Originally released for the Wii and now present on all Nintendo console releases, the Virtual Console uses software emulation to allow the purchasing and playing of games for old systems on modern hardware.” (Wikipedia, game emulators.)

          • erich80

Good job, Magnus. You proved me wrong.

Please keep it up and reply me one post I made 4 hours ago for you. I am looking forward to listen to your brilliant insights on Nintendo marketing strategies.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            What post?

          • greengecko007

“In addition, how do you know the VC feature is overpriced?”

Just by comparison to other companies. I can pay $8 for an SNES game on the Wii U Virtual Console, or I can pay $10 for a PS2 game on the PSstore. SNES games are twice as old as PS2 games, yet they are only 20% cheaper. Like Magnus Eriksson said, SNES games should be $5, and NES titles shouldn’t be more than $2-3.

This goes without even considering quality of the games on the store. All of the virtual console games I bought on the Wii U suffer from lag and framerate problems. I’ve never had this problem with any old games purchased on the PSstore.

        • darkcreap

          Yep, my main additons are:

          1) Outsource some sagas, like DK, Metroid, F-Zero, Starfox, etc.
          2) Bring spin-offs made by other companies. Hyrule Warriors could be an interesting one. Problem is quantity.
          3) Do more projects like TW101 (new IPs) or Bayonetta (bring franchises that have a fan base as a exclusivity deal in exchange of subsidising development)
          4) Subsidise some big third party games to convince them to make a port or a version.

I disagree in one point with you: I think that at least the first 3 they have done or they are doing them even if we don’t know. The problems I see are:

          1) Probably not enough quantity. We don’t know about new installments of secondary sagas. Some are rumoured to be under progress (like metroid), but the question is, will it be enough?
          2) We don’t know how many new collaborations there are (if they have).
          3) We don’t know if they chose to follow this strategy soon enough.

It seems to me that they are following that path, but my guess is that they started pretty late. That means that, even if it happens (and I personally think it is happening), it might come late.

        • jjbredesen

Got to agree with you, but yeah as you said not going to happen….

-Reggie has said that they will make GC games, and i think they will release N64 game before that, so 100% sure on that one.

-As much as i wish they would fill VC with titles and make it free, its not going to happen….

-They will pay or atleast somehow get other companies to make there games, or buy some more 3rd parties. 100% they will buy platinum.

-As for a kickass trailer i would love them to do it, but they want to market toward children and families, so they will not, and it makes me sad :(

So yeah, it will be a better year than 2013, but not the year of Nintendo, looks more like the year of Sony…

          • darkcreap

“So yeah, it will be a better year than 2013, but not the year of Nintendo, looks more like the year of Sony..”

I counted on that, but I expected Nintendo to give a better battle. I thought we would be seeing all the releases promised in the January 2013 Direct tightly spaced in 2014.

I don’t think VC is their main problem, their main problem is to get new games for the WiiU. I don’t mind if they don’t give us as many titles in VC as long as they bring new games, that is why I bought the console for.

And yes, I hope they buy Platinum. So far, TW101 wasn’t a success and there were many things I did not like about its gameplay (I beat the game, so I am not talking without knowledge), but I feel that with proper changes it could come to be a good franchise. But it needs important changes, it has to be said.

Bayonetta is a nice addition and Hideki Kamiya has said that he would like to make a Starfox, so I wonder if Nintendo will choose him.

Nevertheless, Platinum was born as an independent studio, so they could choose to make the games they wanted, so being bought by Nintendo is not something they might like. I believe, though, that if Nintendo would buy them they would still have certain freedom. I think that in that sense Nintendo is different to Microsoft when they buy studios (poor Rare :( ).

But, yeah, I would like Nintendo to buy them, or at least get a deal to collaborate tightly and respect their independence if that is what they want.

        • The Clockwork Being

For the VC they don’t have to just make one Nintendo Studio do it. Employ multiple other studios to spead up the process. I was thinking back in 2012 that during 2013 we would already have a great number of NES and SNES titles. And by the end of 2013 to January 2014 N64 would have started already.

          • Magnus Eriksson

The reason that they trickle them out one by one is not because of low capacity. They could get all those games out in a second if they wanted. But they do it because of money, no other reason.

        • The Clockwork Being

For Kid Icarus I think we should wait and make Nintendo should make a sequel another game. With what Sakurai did with Kid Icarus Uprising for 3DS imagine how he could make a sequel of a game like Ice Climber for example.

        • Blaze247

Sucks it’s not happening. You have some good points, too. :-(

      • Fred

X will bring lots of Hard core gamers.

        • jjbredesen

Yup, if X is released this year, i have a feeling it is a 2015 title, as they have not given any information about how far the game has come….

          • Fred

Their paper work from earlier this month says the current plan is 2014 (although I do understand that Nintendo isn’t afraid of postponing releases to improve games

          • jjbredesen

Oh ok, well it that case it will make a diffrence 100% sure.

          • darkcreap

In the ND of January 2013, they said 2014, but in the last ND they did not provide a release date. That speaks volumes. Between releasing it early and releasing it when it’s good, I prefer the latter. I was greatly surprised with Xenoblade and I want them to have their time. Nevertheless, I think they should hurry up with the WiiU games.

          • jjbredesen

Yeah, they should get more game out and fast, but Nintendo cares more about quality than amount, Nintendo should simply hire more devs, i know it could affect the quality of games, but something needs to be done, and the old exspert people such as Aounoma, Koizumi and Miyamoto are going to retire in the next 5 years… So they need new people

        • Daniel Gonzalez

X is more of a niche game. Those who are Nintendo fans, will certainly buy it. That’s about it.

          • Fred

You don’t think fans of other big open world RPGs like Skyrim will drift to this?

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Considering it’s a JRPG rather than a Skyrim experience, no I really don’t. This game will sell better in Japan for sure, but not so much outside. Basically my opinion on it. One way or the other, we’ll see when the time comes.

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

      I hope so, but I doubt it…

      • erich80

Hey, man, let’s keep our hopes high! :) We are about to have big hitters launching for Wii U, and the 3DS, although not being a stellar success like the DS, is doing very well.

2014 is a key year for the Wii U, we all know that. It’s better to believe Nintendo is striving to turn things around.

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I want to… But they need to do some impressing.

          • jjbredesen

Don’t worry once they release Cranky Kong Returns instead of X, Nintendo will dominate! Shame i can’t use the Reggie account anymore have some good jokes….

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I’d really like Cranky Kong Returns.

    • Ducked

2014 will be year of the PS4! Keep the downvotes coming! >:D

      • erich80

We have to agree that, if there is a console war (whatever it means), the PS4 is very well positioned.

It’s been a great machine for me and – I believe – for all those who own it out there.

But I still believe that Nintendo can change the fate of the Wii U this year. They need to do that so, so badly.

        • Ducked

Your statement is very correct. Its to early to say which is best, but PS4 is by far postioned well as you said. I do believe Wii U will get back on track. After E3 last year, I stated that the PS4 will sell the most this gen, with Wii U in 2nd.

I’m sticking to my prediction. PS4 has the power, and graphics to feed graphic whores. Its got all the good third party titles, and decent exclusives like infamous, uncharted, etc.

But I’m confident that Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros will boost the Wii U in 2014. And games like Zelda U, Animal Crossing, and Metroid U will help it more in the future. Ignoring sales, PS4 and Wii U are the systems to buy. I’ve just never cared for any of the Xbox’s.

          • erich80

The XBox brand is incredible strong in NA and EU. I still believe that the XOne will have better lifetime sales than the Wii U.

And I agree with you: Wii U and PS4 are the way to go.

          • Ducked

I think the Xbox One has focused to much on American sports like NFL with the Xbox One. PS4 will still outsell Xbox One in North America and Europe, but I think when Wii U picks up some pace in the west, and sells good in Japan. That it can pass it. It could be close, similar to the Xbox and GameCube sales.

        • DragonSilths

I cant agree with that. Other the Infamous Second Son and Destiny (a multiplat) there is not a single game on the PS4 this year I think is anything special or worth while.

          • erich80

Hum, I kind of think the same. So far the PS4 didn’t get well worth games. I got Killzone (an PS4 exclusive), but… I didn’t like it at all. Gran Turismo 6 would be a key title, but surprisingly it was launched only for PS3.

But… When one see the PS4 sold units as of today (5.3 mil), one can argue that it is well positioned in the market.

          • DragonSilths

Cause its a new shiny box. That’s why the Wii U sold well at launch and PS4 and Xbox One.

          • Brandon

Uncharted 4, the order 1886, somewhat driveclub, all the AAA 3rd party games coming, and what ever sony has in store for e3.

          • DragonSilths

Uncharted 4 this year? You really think so? I say 2015. And I call Uncharted, Unchanged. Its Tomb Raider with a guy. And believe it or not I do NOT like Naughty Dog. Don’t like Uncharted, don’t like The Last Of Us, all their games have a very close similarity to them. The characters animations, the way they move, its all like Uncharted. Maybe if they would make something new and step out of their comfort area I could like them. Lets see them make something NOT realistic and involving guns. A platformer, a puzzle game hell even an RPG.

          • Ducked

There’s also LittleBigPlanet, and Modnation Racers.

          • DragonSilths

LBP is meh. The only Sony games I have ever enjoyed are Spyro, Crash Bandicoot and Twisted Metal.

          • Brandon

There a great studio. There games have one of they best stories. Gameplay is pretty fun also, but saying they all have very close similarity(which not true) is the same thing with the mario series and other series as well.

          • DragonSilths

I’m not denying Mario has similar play styles. You seem to think I’m a Mario fan?

          • Blaze247

Yea, PS4 isn’t my cup of tea, either. I hear that even though PS4 is doing well, Sony’s still not doing too well in terms of OVERALL business. Seriously, only a few months ago someone had to tell me that Sony isn’t only a gaming company. I was like: REALLY???

      • Arthur Jarret

        Hmmm… delicious downvotes….

        • Ducked

No one gave me a taste of them :(

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            There, feel better? ;P

          • Ducked

Thanks! I thought I’d never get one!

          • Arthur Jarret

Me too, me too! Now don’t say I never gave you anything!

          • Alex

Is today the Opposite Day if it is then I like down votes and hate consoles so much.

      • jjbredesen

Pfft, this year will be The Year Of Cranky Kong ;)

      • Levi Johansen

2014 is the year of Sonic!

        • Daniel Gonzalez

A bad year it will be.

      • Daniel

Look at the statistics, Nintendo is/has been the number 1 in gaming. They’re not dying out. Mario is one of the most recognized icons in the world, you can’t say that about any of the characters in your ps4 games. Why are you even on this site if you “don’t care” about the Wii U? Seems to me like you’re a pretty butt hurt fanboy. Wait until Smash Bros for Wii U and Mario Kart 8 come out. You’re gonna sit you’re ass down when you see it sells more than all your ps4 games combined. It’s amusing watching people hate on the most loved gaming company JUST BECAUSE t’s the most loved gaming company. Do yourself a favor and throw your ps4 in the trash.. where it belongs. It’s an insult to modern gaming.

        • Brandon

Wow. I have to disagree about nintendo being #1 in gaming. The playstation brand has always been selling well even with the slow down of the ps3. A wii u game selling more then all ps4 games combined is not possible for the wii u. Ps4 belonging in the trash is crazy talk since its the best console of this gen so far.

          • Daniel

I can tell you’re one of those people who are easily amused by “real life graphics”. I bet you’re not even gonna remember the games you play on your ps4 20 years from now.

          • Brandon

Thats not true. I care about story line and gameplay, but graphics is a major part for me also, since it makes games more appealing. I got my wii on launch year and the thing I remember most about it is wii sports and collecting more dust then my swifter.

          • Daniel

You suck so much. You’re the reason gaming is dying.

        • Ducked

Oh boy, you’re a special kind of stupid. I guess some people can’t take jokes, or the truth. PS4 is the favorite to win the 8th generation, no lie. Wii U is struggling right now, no lie. PS4 is close to passing the Wii U’s lifetime sales, no lie. Does it really matter which sells the best? Is that important to you? I’m just stating my opinions.

Judging by your grammar, and how stupid your comment was. I can’t take you seriously. And have to label you as a troll.

          • Daniel

If I’m some special kind of stupid than you must be some rare new breed of fucking idiot cause I’m pretty sure I just stated facts. Opinions don’t matter when we’re talking facts, buddy. It doesn’t matter that the ps4 is close to passing the Wii U’s lifetimes sales. Overall, nintendo’s console sales have beaten EVERY other gaming company’s console sales by millions upon millions. I can promise you this year the Wii U is going to sky rocket past the ps4 and xbox 1.

Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo focuses on gameplay and replay value. Sony and Microsoft only focus on making games that “Look like real life!”.. You play their games once and NEVER PLAY THEM AGAIN. People have forgotten that games are supposed to take you away from real life and bring you into a different world. If you want to see real life graphics, go outside.

And what? Judging by my grammar? Are you dyslexic or something? I made no grammar mistakes in my comment. And what are you anyway.. the grammar police? You sound like you’re trying to make yourself seem smart when really you’re just relying on your computer to autocorrect your mistakes.

I’m not saying sales mean everything. But they do say a hell of a lot

          • Ducked

Wow, I can sure have fun with you. Predictions are facts? lol. You act as I hate Nintendo. Nevertheless your a butthurt Wii U fanboy, who has to much time on their hands to write that. I don’t think your serious, so I can’t argue with you.

          • Sydney Ultrasyd

You’re a funny troll dude. No reason for bashing the Wii U, but no reason for calling PS4 an insult to modern gaming. I’ll get one beside my Wii U for nice games like mass Effect 4 that we won’t get on Wii U.

I hate it when people behave like in a sect. Makes me think of what happen in Centrafrica, blind people hating for nothing.

      • ZeldaFanzzzz

wrong forum, ps4 forum is over there not here -.-

    • RichM

No!….that will mean we’ll only get 4 games!!!

  • Green

Kind of was expecting a full fledged Luigi game on the U =.

    • LevenThumps

      You are not alone.

    • 00EpicGamer00

Me too, I wish Nintendo made a paper Luigi game. I have a great idea for it too, it’s that you’d play through Luigi’s side of the story from Thousand Year Door. I think that’d make a great paper Luigi game. :)

    • Fred

We got Luigi Bros. and we’ll soon get Super Luigi Bros. What more do you want man?

      • Green

I want a full fledged Luigi game 0.0.

        • Fred

Just play Super Mario 3D World using only Luigi there DONE. You also got Super Luigi U which if you buy the green case one it is a full fledge Luigi GAme on the U

          • Green

,but I want a full fledged Luigi game o.o. That’s Mario 3d, not luigi 3d silly goose :3. I was thinking more like a Luigi Mansion U or something for it.

  • Jack5221

I was kind of hoping this year to be the Year of Yoshi ya know? Yoshi’s new Island, new Yoshi themed 3DS XL, and Yarn Yoshi for the Wii U – which I was expecting from the last Direct, but did not show up. >.<

  • ActivesiN

2014 the Year of Nintendo, and the Year of Sonic

  • LevenThumps

You had a good year Luigi. As for 2014, let’s not narrow our sights to one single character, but make this the year of Nintendo as a whole, or the year of the Wii U. Please Nintendo, make 2014 an amazing year.

  • McBlink

Now that it’s over can they please focus on WiiU games, not just eshop releases and creative uses to justify the gamepad.

  • babulibaba

Sometimes it’s just so blatantly obvious that most of miiverse is 12

  • URFTBOUND4LIFE .

2014 should be the year of DK. Tropical Freeze is on the way and it’s the 20th anniversary of the DKC series. If they were smart they’d make the Trilogy avalable on the eshop or release an HD remake of those games maybe even have a DK special bonus behind the scenes interviews about the past games and TF. Nintendo jump on that shit!

  • Sdudyoy

Now, I really don’t care if this year is themed, but if I had my choice, it would be the year of all Nintendo characters as Super smash bros is coming out, that game alone will justify your purchase of a Wii U, the other games that come out are icing on the cake.

  • Magnus Eriksson

What a great year it was on Wii U. Amazing effort Nintendo! Thank you, thank you, thank you! New Super Luigi U was EXCACTLY what Nintendo needed. And dr. Luigi? What an ecxellent thing to do. And all those Virtual Console games that had Luigi in them. Much, much better than a Luigis Mansion on a new console. Just fantastic… Year of Luigi was SHIT on Wii U! A joke!

Lets see a year of stop fucking around and put some effort in the Wii U or GTFO.

    • darkcreap

Yep. I am still impressed on how little they announced for WiiU in the last Nintendo Direct. It was like “Oh, great, so many Nintendo games… for 3DS”. And no big third party announcements or third party exclusive collaborations (like Hyrule warriors, The Wonderful 101 or Bayonetta). No word about Yoshi Yarn or SMT-FE crossover.

When I saw all those Nintendo first part titles like Steel Dive, Yoshi’s New Island and Kirby’s Triple Deluxe I was like saying: Why don’t you put all those on WiiU instead of 3DS? I think they are overfocusing on the 3DS.

      Clearly, Nintendo needs more

      1) Third party support (like AC, Watchdogs and all that)
      2) More third party collaborations to either do spin-offs of their games (Hyrule Warriors, for instance)
      3) Outsourced installments of their sagas (Like Retro is doing with DK).

Furthermore, the problem would not be so obvious (but still important nonetheless) if some of the announced games for 3DS were (also or instead) coming to WiiU. I think Nintendo’s output is not bad overall, the problem is most of their tiltes are going to 3DS. But actually, if you count all the titles for both 3DS and WiiU the sum is not bad. They would still need to outsource more or subsidise a lot of third parties to bring franchises to the WiiU, but it would not be so painful.

Even if they don’t want o subsidise 3rd party franchises they don’t own to bring games by force (which would be the quickest way now), they could at least do more collaborations like TW101, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta or simply outsourcing some of their sagas (like DK).

I don’t pretend to be a management expert, but it is because of that that I cannot stop wondering why they have focused so much on 3DS instead of WiiU since it is the one suffering the most. There are no Nintendo games between DK and Mario Kart. Probably there will be a gapa between that and Smash and Bayonetta. Not to mention that it is unknown when X will come. Same applies for yarn yoshi, the crossover or even Zelda U.

    • jjbredesen

Get ready for the year of Cranky Kong :P

      • Magnus Eriksson

That would put me out of balance and make me lose the ironic distance. I would be furious.

        • jjbredesen

ROFL, I actually think it could happen 100% serious, its so stupid Nintendo would do it.

And yeah if they did that i would lose my little optimism and send them the largest rant/rage letter they have ever seen, i could write a 500 000 word mail! But the response would proberly just be “please understand…”

      • Ducked

Scrooge McDuck and Capcom are furious with Nintendo stealing the stick jumping technique.

    • Mario

      Not completely.

    • Clel

Yeah this is getting really annoying… “In 2014 we’ll have a giant slew of Nintendo games, all year round!”

  • 00EpicGamer00

I hope Luigi still gets some attention in the future. I always hated how he was the character that was pushed aside or (literally) forgotten. He’s one of my favorite Mario characters, and hope he’s treated with a little more respect from now on.

  • Fred

I fully expected Nintendo to announce the year of something going into last week’s Nintendo Direct. Alas, nothing

    • Noah

That’s because it’s already the year of Sonic ;)

  • Dark-Link73

So I’ve been wondering something this past year. Nintendo celebrated the year of Luigi, but its flagship mascot, Mario; didn’t get jack. Sure Nintendo celebrated “25 Years of Super Mario Bros.” in 2010, but Nintendo didn’t truly celebrated 25 years of Mario. Otherwise they would’ve celebrated him in 2008, not 2010.

Poor Mario. Bunch of ingrates! After all that Mario has done for them! ;-)

  • Christian Schoff

Aww. :( I want more Luigi.

  • Cheroth

What Nintendo needs to do to get the Wii U on track is focus on the Wii U 100%. The very first Direct of 2014 was disappointing. 3/4 of the Direct was focused on the 3DS and every 3DS game got a release date, but none of Wii U games (excluding MK8 and DKCTF) got one.

That Direct proved that Nintendo does not know what they are doing with the Wii U, it seems like they don’t realize that the Wii U is struggling. It’s almost like Nintendo is completely oblivious to how bad the Wii U is doing. The 3DS can take a break Nintendo needs to make the Wii U there number 1 priority.

The 3DS can sit a couple of Directs out, it will sell itself. All Nintendo needs to do is HYPE!! up the Wii U and make it more appealing. Sony has proven you can sell a console purely off of hype, they proved it with the PS4.

  • Donaald

They should begin “The Year of Retro Gaming” or something similar, they have so many games that would later be considered master pieces and I missed on many of them, it would be nice if they could speed their VC releases, then again they should enable the eshop everywere and account-tied purchases. Nintendo is sitting in a goldmine but they’re oblivious about it.

    • Donaald

      ..

  • Shaise

I was sorta expecting more, but that’s fine. They gave Luigi enough attention.

  • Mario

Sorry Ashley! Sonic’s taking over this year!

  • SleepySkullhead

I really hope in the March Direct they just come out and say “Oh btw, we made Paper Luigi and It’ll be available soon.” Maybe as a download on Wii U.
