Ex-Criterion boss complains about Nintendo and EA

Need For Speed Most Wanted Wii U

Replying to a fan on twitter earlier, Criterion Games co-founder Alex Ward had some unkind words about Nintendo and EA. The conversation was about Need for Speed: Most Wanted, specifically the Wii U release and the lack of support/sales for it.

When challenged by a Nintendo fan about not supporting Nintendo hardware Ward replied:

So if Ward’s comments are truthful it seems like he tried to support the release of Need for Speed for the Wii U but was hindered by Nintendo’s lack of interest in or support for the game.

Do you think Ward was justified in his comments about Nintendo? After all, if what he says is true, it seems that they played a big part in the Wii U version of the game getting a sub-par release compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. Have any of you bought Need for Speed: Most Wanted U? If so what did you think of it?

    Nintendo need to straighten themselves out with proper support reps for developers big and small. They also need to buy out Capcom – imagine Resident Evil, Megaman Dead Rising and Street Fighter to name a few being forever Nintendo exclusive – they’d be riots…and plenty of people putting prejudices aside to play the games equally xD

    EA need to stop being so money minded, take a leaf out of Valve’s book and put customers first – then richer profits will follow

        Yup, and even when they do help, they use ages on repling etc. This is something Nintendo needs to work on, and i don’t want so see one Nintendrone raging saying Nintendo is perfect and trying there best, because they are not, they are not trying very hard to help other devs, they help themselves and that is it. Alex is not the first person to compain about this, its a fact.

            1. They could give them faster replies because right now devs must wait almost a week for a reply!!! That is far to long, if i want to know how write a simple peace of code, and i have a deadline a week is to long to wait.

            2. Explain to devs how the gpgpu architecture makes Wii U, a lot more powerfull than it is currently being thought as. And how to utilize the tech.

            3. General information, and willingness to help promote games etc.

            Right. Lack of decent documentation hurts, and it’s made harder when answers to questions come so late. If a company wants third party support, they’ve got to be able to support the third parties. Can’t expect people to line up to develop software for your platform when you’re not willing or able to provide needed information quickly.

            The slow part again was likely based off pre release SDKs. many indie developers say turn around times are super fast for them.

            Even if they explained the architecture how can you be sure the developers would actually use it considering from what I have heard stuff like the eDRAM and GPGPU require more specialized training or dedicated teams which require more effort and investment which is something most developers don’t seem to want to do

            They technically do promote third party games in a way. They often have demos at events and they give them a spotlight in Nintendo Directs too

            I am aware of that, but the GPGPU is the future of how platforms will be built, so devs should start to learn this stuff as soon as possible, and since Nintendo made the choice to use the more modern architecture they should be able to help devs use it, if you look at Wii U’s raw power its 2GB of RAM= 6GB of Xbox One Ram if used correctly, and 1 CPU core is as powerfull as 2 of Xbox Ones, so Wii U is a lot closer to Next gen systems if used correctly, and if devs can use the GPGPU correctly it will take about 30% of the strain of the CPU making Wii U a lot more capable than people are saying, problem is devs can’t use it, its to ahead of its time, its actually a engineering masterclass, but because PS4 and Xbone use “older” architecture that is what devs have been using before and can use those systems to the max no problem, the multiplats are not optimized for the better architecture of Wii U, so it runs worse.

            So you could say Nintendo made its system to good, for us.

            You have a point there. The reason developers were heaping so much praise on the PS4 and X1 architecture is because it allows for quick and dirty PC ports with as little optimization as possible. Even if they know how capable Wii U really was they wouldn’t want to take advantage of it simply because it means more time and work which is a pretty crappy excuse

            Thats true, but i also would put the blame on Micro$oft and $ony for being lazy on the engineering side of developing there consoles, they are holding the market back. I think PS4 is a fantastic piece of hardware, and they have done a lot of great stuff with it, but it some ways its not that great, and i feel like its really overhyped. But i would blame the publishers for not giving the devs the resources or time to learn how to use Wii U, and Nintendo for not giving the publishers the resources.

            They sent out the devkits to every possible develop our there even before the console was released and every upgrade that followed but if a company doesn’t want to develop and publish games for the wiiu then it won’t (no matter the reason) it’s quite simple

            When all online services where not yet completed for Wii U’s launch, and the horrible tech support i think it put most devs of wanting to develop.

            Maybe by providing Tools that works and technical support manuals in English… it would be a minimum, but it seems that even that is hard for Nintendo. It should be better by now, but too little to late.

          That’s why I think they should have a real NA headquarters with the mission to promote their products and collaborate with other developpers making games for their system. And they need to make it quick before the few remaining developpers jump off the ship…

You claim the WiiU was “dead during development” but yet you purchased a system months after it released (or so you claim). Why would anyone who has nothing but disdain for a product purchase said product months after it is released? Even worse you spent countless hours doing nothing but saying how much of a failure and disappointment it is on these message boards, but yet you go out and get one. I have my theories….

        They where indies, or second party studios, such as Retro and Shinen, that only develop for Nintendo so they get more support. Nintendo are more friendly to there own.

            You don’t know that. Developing for one platform has its advantages, especially if you don’t want to end with a half a**ed job or don’t want to go through the developing nightmare of having to support 4 or 5 different platforms, which isn’t easy and can cost much time and ressources which can be better spend improving the game itself.

            That is why Epic Mickey 2 bombed so miserably. The first one was decent because the developer were able to focus on improving the game because of the Wii exclusivity. With the 2nd one however they stretched their resources too thinly trying to get game out on all these platforms which meant they were not able to focus on fixing the first games flaws. This is multi-platform development can be a double edged sword

          Do you ever realize that alot of those indie studios are made up of former people from the big fish developers? Retro has former employees from the likes of Naughty Dog and Vigil. So it obvious they would have a better understanding of the hardware. Your claims that Nintendo is slow when it comes to support and poor documentation sound like you were basing your info off that bs Eurogamer article which was already debunked long ago as really old info that was based off pre release SDKs

            Who they used to work for doesn’t change who they currently work for. Retro is never going to say anything bad about the company that pays them. Indie developers are a little bit more credible, but since they rarely make games that stretch boundaries or innovate, of course they are going to have an easier development process.

      What he says isn’t true, considering there was a father and son commercial for the game on Nintendo’s pocket in an attempt to make up for EA’s lack of support for the title. Not to mention Nintendo created a demo booth just for the game at their kiosks back at Disneyland (Disney World?) during their little event.

      How do you know exactly? That could be based of info from the Eurogamer article which has already been debunked. As I have said before nobody really knows what goes on behind the scenes. This game out right at the same time as Lego City and MH3U two exclusives that were likely much more appealing and why do you think Nintendo would want to spend their dollars marketing a 5 month old port. Its mainly the job of the publisher to market their games not really Nintendo’s they had demos of the game at various events

      Yep, and Nintendo actually devoted a couple of minutes to it in their Nintendo Direct. They did plenty to market it. The fact is, EA didn’t give a fuck. This dev is a whiny bitch that rumor has it, is hated by those that he worked for, and that worked for him. That said, it sounds like the typical problem with 3rd party games and Nintendo.
      Nintendo makes hardware that is different and certainly requires more effort and skill to work on. 3rd parties tend to do the minimal amount of work and us Nintendo consumers can’t be bothered because we expect polish that we get with the majority of 1st party games. The games are gimped or come out a lot later than on the others, so people have played it or don’t feel it deserves their hard earned money. That was the case with this game.
      Clearly done well, but came out too late. It’s unfortunate, but he has to grow the fuck up and stop blaming the world for his problems. This happens all the time in this industry. No reason to ‘Yawn” and act like a dick when questioned.

    I have not bought any EA games for lack of attitude as a company and support to the wii u and i will not get any EA games on my ps4 or wii u till this changes there are other great games i am a big ubisoft supporter i have all there games on wii u and a couple on ps4 for the throphies

    I feel like this guy got caught in the middle of EA vs. Nintendo. Somehow I don’t feel like this is a common occurrence. When there’s a lack of support for a certain version, it’s rarely not the developing company as far as I can tell.

      Most smaller studios run it to this problem because:

      1) There publisher wants to make a profit, so they are not that interested on “wasting” time and energy on the devs.

      2) Nintendo does not care to help the devs, they use ages on replying and have a terrible dev support, there consumer support is great, but not there dev support as it is all based in japan, so it needs to be translated etc. Making devs not meet there deadline and the publisher blaming Nintendo, so there relationship gets worse.

      The devs work there ass of, its the publisher that is the problem, Bioware is a great dev, but EA gave them to little time on ME3 and shoved loads of DLC in it, so they could make more money. Nintendo cares about there own studios and thats it, EA cares for nobody only there own wealth.

        Not necessarily true.

        Nintendo’s 3rd party issue has more to do with old policies that no longer exist. Their draconian policies in the 80’s didn’t make any friends, and changing perceptions after that is near impossible. They could have near flawless support, and there would still be people railing against them so they could grind an ax. I’ll take the word of some other groups like Platinum who’ve said Nintendo has great support opposed to those who grew up hatting Nintendo over past grievances. Hate like that tends to spread generationally because of the “they killed my granddaddy” effect.

        EA on the other hand has it in its proverbial head that it controls who wins and looses in the gaming industry. In part they are given credit for the death of the Dreamcast, and that has only fueled their ego on the subject over the years.

        Sure, we could say Nintendo isn’t giving EA enough love to get them to bring over some games. However, if EA is attempting to use it’s weight again to try and nock out one of the competitors what makes anyone think that Nintendo could do anything to get a game ported over. EA only has to do a few token ports, and botch the launches so they can say “We tried, and it didn’t work.”. It is in EA’s best interest that they have fewer systems to develop for because it saves on the marketing cost that they have to put together.

    Not surprised at all. This has been Nintendo’s problem for a long time. They really need to wake up, and focus on third parties too. After all, you should support anyone completely when they’re bringing games to your console. Let’s not forget the poor lack of support from Nintendo fans included. Considering no one buys third party hardly ever, even with a handful that have been on Wii U, very little support. Fans are a problem no doubt, but from years of conditioning their fans that only Nintendo games suffice, Nintendo in the end is to blame. It is their console is it not. That makes it their responsibility to make things happen.

        There has been a handful of good third party games on the Wii U. The result was the same. Lol. Batman Arkham City sold poorly. While Origins didn’t have multiplayer, anyone can tell you it wasn’t worth it. Even if the game wasn’t “gimped” or “half-assed,” sales wouldn’t have been much different. It’s not really much of a matter of third parties screwing Nintendo or not skilled enough. Most of them are quite skilled, they’re employers don’t see it worth an investment considering their games never profit enough on Nintendo consoles. History plays a big part in it. It’s up to Nintendo shed that, not third parties. All you can do, is buy a PS4 or Xbox One if you want non-Nintendo games.

        Wii U won’t be getting much third party as it’s rep is already pretty much tainted. Nintendo will survive on its 1st party this gen, and hopefully, they’ll bring out a better strategy to reel in third parties in generation 9.

      This is what I have been saying for years… Ever since n64 I’ve been a two (or more) console man. The days of NES and SNES are long gone. I think Nintendo knows this. They know that the really Nintendo fans will still buy their console only to play their IPs, while at the same time buying another machine. The problem is there are millions of other potential owners that aren’t willing to do that. Another problem is online multiplayer, it’s just an afterthought for Nintendo. I have many friends around the world and we game together online. That’s not a viable option on wiiu.

      I see the situation a little differently to you. I see it as Nintendo is a kid who is standing up to bullies. Refusing to give up their dinner money.
      The big 3rd parties seem to want money to promote, or even make games for Nintendo, but Nintendo can see only small benefit from this. Of course more games is better, but from a business point of view is it worth spending money on a product that is being promoted on a competitors machine?
      Nintendo has to think of its own studios and support Devs who are willing to make unique experiences for the WIi U>

    I can totally see that happening.

    Nintendo has a tendency of not supporting Mature content games and many third party games altogether.

    When you look at Sony and Microsoft and how they promote 3rd party games on their respective consoles, you will see a huge difference with Nintendo. For a better reference on the matter, simply go to the PSN store, Xbox Live and Nintendo’s E-shop and you will see what I mean.

    Hell, in Nintendo’s e-shop all I see is Donkey Kong and Mario EVERYWHERE, and I find myself going for 3rd party titles by myself because I know of their existence and not by suggestions of Nintendo. When you go to the PSN or Xbox Live, you will find news about newly released games (wether big projects or indie games) and depending on your buying trends, they will suggest you other 3rd party titles.

    Nintendo doesn’t go after 3rd parties like they should. There console’s specs clearly aren’t even with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, so since it takes more time with a port, they should make a much bigger effort. If the Wii U were my only next gen console, I wouldn’t want to miss out on the next Star Wars Battlefront, Kingdom Hearts III, etc.

    Although you know they say people play Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games. That’s pretty true now, either fans don’t buy 3rd party games, or the developers give them a washed up version of the game.

    Example: Wii U owners complain when Black Ops II, (which was a very nice port) DLC. When it was clearly because of sales.

    Example #2: Warner Bros complain when Arkham Orgins sells badly on Wii U, when they didn’t give them online multiplayer (even though it ended up bad).

    So yes, I’ll buy most of my 3rd party titles on PS4, and all the good Nintendo exclusives like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, X, Zelda, Yarn Yoshi, Fire Emblem x Shin Megami, on my Wii U.

    Don’t complain that EA doesn’t support Nintendo consoles, because there games DON’T SELL. Most Wii U owners don’t care about Battlefield, Mass Effect, and sports games likes Madden.

    But no matter what, Kingdom Hearts 3 still must come to Wii U. Now that’s a 3rd party game that will sell.

      Yeah I don’t buy any 3rd party software on wiiu. Only Nintendo first party IPs. It’s fine for people with multiple consoles, but for those that can only afford one console… The current situation with the wiiu isn’t a good one.

    This game came out at the same time as Lego City and MH3U two exclusives that were arguably more appealing and that Nintendo felt would worth more spending their marketing dollars on. They even published those two games in Europe and offered bundles too. They also had demos of the game as various events as well

    Overpriced 60 dollars is just too much for a 5 month old port especially when the GOTY edition can be had else where for 20
    Not well supported didn’t get the rest of the DLC’
    Bad Timing as stated in my first statement
    All these reasons are hardly Nintendo’s doing. The bulk of it is on EA for sending the game out to die the same way they left ME3 DOA on Wii U

    Hmmm. As you know by some of my comments, I’m not a Nintendrone. Keep that in mind as I say I’m in the camp that it’s harder to market and push a game that at this point was already 5, 6 months old. That just about everyone had already. Granted, with the drought of games the U had at that point, they could have used NFS as a showcase of what their system could do, but as publisher, that was EA’s job to market. It appears to me that this game for about as much attention as other games on the Wii U. Not a lot. Though that’s a problem they have with even their own games at this point, sadly.

    Another problem would be that they charged full retail and to my knowledge didn’t get all the DLC the other platforms received, which makes it a hard sell in and of itself. I ended up eventually getting on sale, and it is quite fantastic and something I would have gotten on launch as at that point over the 360 version.

    I think Nintendrone has a misguided sense of justice. Criterion supported the Wii U in by first, making an excellent port that showed the technical capabilities of the console with awesome sound and graphics proving that a port done right shouldn’t be a “vanilla port”; second when EA canceled Crysis 3 on Wii U and left Crytek standing with and ” fully up and running” version of the game on Wii U, Criterion advertised the shit out of NFS:MWU so that EA wouldn’t do the same to them.

    Now, I don’t know what Ward meant by “the company (I assume Nintendo) didn’t… bother to press the disks with our game on.” But if he meant advertisement, them yeah, Nintendo is guilty of a terrible (or lack of) advertisement campaign for the U; but if he meant press as in “manufacturing”, then there isn’t anything Nintendo could’ve done about it because Criterion is an EA subsidiary so is up to them to publish it.

    NFS:MWU didn’t have a “stealth release”. Nintendo is just in denial, or being completely misguided, in their marketing department. Whomever is running it needs to step down or get fired.

      NFS:MWU is still one of the best games on the Wii U. I used to like showing it off to those skeptical of the Wii U’s graphical capabilities. I’d probably still use it as an example along with Super Mario 3D World.

      I wasn’t going to buy the game at first being it was published by EA, but seeing all the tweets and youtube videos (with developer commentary), before the release of the game, changed my mind. Critierion was extremely passionate about this game and it shows! I wanted to support them for their hard work.

        I did the same. After the EA debacle I was going to buy the game used since publishers and developers don’t see a dime of used game sales, but this generation I learned how the gaming industry actually works, and that’s why I bought it new, to support Criterion. NFS:MWU is still, imo, one of the most beautiful games on Wii U.

    That game was great. We got on disc DLC but unfortunately it stopped there. My sister played the hell out of that game because online is freaking awesome. We can’t wait for Project Cars to release in order to race sports cars again

    Nintendo do themselves no favours when it comes to western 3rd parties but for EA to refuse to publish a game in the region it was developed in suggests they want Wii U to fail. They basically refused to develop any of their important releases for a console they pledged to support. I hope they come back with something decent but I’m pretty sure they’ll just give the Wii U some old ports when their spat is over.

      The gamepad doesn’t have analog triggers so the control of the actual game is better on other platforms analog triggers are much better for driving games then a digital button.

And I’m quite sure you didn’t test it on Wii U. By the way, if you like you can also use the Wii U classic controller, you can choose. On other formats you cannot choose. So on Wii U you can have also classic control and the best graphics available on consoles for that game. For this game, Wii U wins on every aspect. There is no match, or better, no race! ;) Just play it, have fun, and you’ll agree with me too, I’m sure.

          I was speaking about the gamepads lack of Analog triggers. Not any other controllers. There is a big difference between analog and digital, that’s not opinion it’s fact.

          The wiiu version is good, probably the best… when played with a controller that has analog triggers. If you don’t have the classic controller and only have the gamepad or pro controller. Then its better on other platforms that DO provide an analog trigger for gas and break.

    I’ve been over this extensively with people… Nintendo should not have to pick up the advertising bill from EA, especially on a 5 month old port. His purposely Nintendo bashing serves more to gain attention than it is truthful.

    Well he makes a good argument but then again he is the Ex employee here, and we only have one side of the story. For all we know it was his fault the game was backed highly.

    Its tough to judge how 3rd party interactions go with Nintendo, some report such great results and others not so much, there doesn’t seem to be a common factor in all the situations.

    This guy works in a cut throat environment, you either put up with it and keep working or you move on and he did, but he sure sounds bitter about it.

    Its just not Nintendo’s job to advertise a late port at same extent as their own (though they haven’t been doing so good of job advertising on those either).
    There was pamphlets everywhere around the games launch, showcasing Wii U games, even though this game was nowhere near launch, it was still featured in there.
    Maybe this guy wanted Nintendo to throw a GTA V kind of marketing campaign for their late port.

    Good to see a developer that isn’t afraid to stand up for himself and his colleagues. The unfortunate thing is that this is the likely outcome for any developer under EA publishing trying to get on the Wii U. EA has expressed that they have no interest in Nintendo, and apparently the feeling is mutual.

    I bought the first week and sold it. The game looked good on paper but didn’t play well. Using a digital trigger to accelerate only works in mario kart. The gamepad controls were inaccessible in single-player mode.

    Anyone complaining about how it was six months old – it was $30 if you bought it direct from EA. They should’ve just priced it at $30 everywhere, but whatever.

    This dev doesn’t deserve this kind of harassment. Shame on this so-called wii U “fan”. NFSMWU is an incredible game. I’m happy with Criterion. But it’s obvious EA and Nintendo should have pushed for this game to have been a marquee Wii U launch title.

    Also, this idiot harassing the dev seems to not have played NFSMWU. It has a pretty comprehensive set of Gamepad features and has far more impressive visuals than the PS3/360 versions of the game.

    I personally think he is covering his own ass, but also, I believe that EA could be at fault here more than Criterion.

    As for Nintendo, maybe they would want to push out a crappy game just to have a launch title, etc, but, Nintendo wants quality games. NFS didn’t cost them any money to make, so I doubt they would just rush it to release.

    So, Criterion and EA would be the most responsible, considering they are the developer and the PUBLISHER (which has the power in the industry, dev studios are powerless).

    Criterion are a good development team. I could totally believe that Nintendo would have shown little interest as their focus before and shortly post-Wii U launch seemed to go awry.

    This game is fun for sandbox play, a bit difficult without analog acceleration, no idea why they didnt attach the acceleration to the analog sticks.

    In regards to the Wii U version being sub par I would beg to differ. Other than the number of online players being trimmed a bit, but was closer to the PC version than last gen. I don’t fault Nintendo for not pushing the game. It wasn’t an exclusive game and it had been out awhile already. It may have helped relations to push the game, but Nintendo did nothing unreasonable.

    I loved NFS:MWU. Only thing it lacked was online multiplayer. But having your friends’ times and records on your screen was DEFINITELY a good thing and I would love to see more of it.

    I bought the game and it was a solid effort for the Wii U. Really nice graphics and some fun driving mechanics. I guess when Nintendo and EA had that trouble early on both companies said screw the other. That’s freaking sad really when a second party Developer to EA is trying to make a living. I wish that game sold much better it’s a solid racing game that deserves more sales for real.

    I bought it and still can’t get into it. Same thing happened with Burnout Paradise. Guess that style of driving game isn’t for me.

    I noticed this game was released around the same time Nintendo realized EA had backstabbed them. In this case neither company’s best interest would be in helping the other. EA promoting the game would sell more Wii U consoles(and debunk the Wii U lacking graphically rumor), Nintendo promoting the game would have made EA profit. Leaving Criterion stuck in the middle of this mess.

    I can see why Nintendo would be upset with EA, but they should still try to be friendly with the devs of other companies. Who knows where the developer will be working at in the future.

    Its sad but it seems nintendo don’t see value in certain IP (even with their own IP at some points). They were probably illogically weighing their losses. I mean Nintendo have been sitting around being jerked around like a punching bag these last two years and it almost seems like they are severely understaffed in some areas.
