Wii Sports Club premium bundle to become main Wii U offering in Japan

japan-wii-sports-club

When the Wii U launched in 2012, it released in the 8GB white basic version and a 32GB black deluxe edition. Since then we’ve seen Nintendo phase out the 8GB white console in favor of every SKU being offered at 32GB both white and black in Japan. Now it looks like Nintendo will be phasing out the original premium bundle and focusing on the new Wii Sports Club premium bundle as the primary bundle available in Japan.

A note released with new advertisement for the bundle states that the old premium bundle will cease production soon and will instead be replaced by the Wii Sports Club bundle. It seems like the Wii Sports Club bundle will also only be available in white instead of both colors, so perhaps the white version of the Wii U is more popular in Japan? Either way, it’s likely if this new Wii Sports Club bundle sees success in Japan, we could see it offered to other territories as well.

Remember Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort were two of the most popular Wii games released.

I don’t know about you guys, but this is a bad decision in my opinion. I know Wii Sports was the best selling video gamer EVER, but they should’ve bundled a better game like Zelda or Mario or something like that.

They should have bundled it with Super Mario 3D World, or Dragon Quest X

Now I wish Dragon Quest X came to Wii U in America, darn it..

      • 504HotBoy

I believe they already had a Dragon Quest X Wii U bundle in Japan a while back. They doing the Wii U sports bundle, because Wii sports was the highest selling Wii title in Japan. While it’s no longer popular here in the states, it may be still popular in Japan. Only time will tell.

        • That guy who hates Spike

What else can you bundle it with? Everything that deserves some form of a bundle has either already been bundled, or can be confuzed by its Wii counterpart.
Wii Sports Club, Just Dance Wii U, Taiko Drum Master Wii U, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, New Super Mario Bros. U, Wii Fit U, Wii Party U.

I agree – Wii Sports appealed to the casual audience who wanted to just have a laugh with an inexpensive console, with the selling point being the motion controls. This audience simply isn’t interested in the Wii U as they don’t have the same drive as the hardcore audience to purchase the latest console. If they’ve still got their Wii, they’re happy. If they don’t, they probably didn’t use it enough and so won’t want to buy a newer, more expensive model of what they may likely think is the same system (remember all that confusion when they first announced the Wii U and many people thought it was just a new peripheral for the original Wii?). Nintendo seem to want to appeal to an audience that simply isn’t ready to listen just yet.

But I could be wrong – this could sell like hot cakes and take the world by storm again, who knows?

it still has Zelda and Mario Bundles, this is replacing the Nintendo Land bundle

    • Carlos Webster

To prove that I’m not only a Sony fan but not a Sony fanboy, but also a Nintendo fan but not a Nintendo fanboy, I say you’re right, because I think RPGs are the No. 1 genre in Japan.

      • ben

You can get a mario bundle in Japan with wiimote and sensor bar. You also get wii u party. It costs 2000 yen more. Which is a far better deal.

        • Carlos Webster

Yeah, but for Nintendo, making this bundle is a waste of money.

  • Thomas Vienna

I still consider my 8GB Wii U a Limited Edition model, lol.

    • Mario Garth

I laughed too hard at this.

    • Alden Youngthunder

regretting the black model. finger prints don’t look cool on gamepad, already had an external hhd, and nintendoland was too short. otherwise i got like $45 eshop credit from nintendo.

      • Thomas Vienna

The two things I regret about it though are the lack of eShop credit and the lack of the stand that makes the Wii U upright. I do like how it is easy to clean, though.

this is a bad decision, but this at least should have been available at launch in all territories if they wanted to ride on the wii’s fumes. i purchased bowling, and was initially really excited, but the game doesn’t really offer that much new even though it says on paper: HD graphics, online play, etc. i’m honestly surprised at how underwhelming it has been. i’ve played it probably about 3-4 times since the week it released. bummer. nintendo NEEDS to find the next wow factor and exploit the shit out of it. i have a feeling this won’t be it. and what ever happened to luring back “the core gamer?” meh. no sign of that.

  • steveb944

I still want a Sports software bundle so I can purchase and use it, right now it’s too expensive when I have Wii Sports and Resort in my drawer whenever I want for free.

  • Gabe Hoffman

Why are people calling this a bad decision? This bundle is Japan only as far as we know and who knows maybe the Japanese are still into Wii Sports. You have to take into consideration the tastes of each region you know

    • abe

true and if this dose lure the japanese gamer to the Wii U thats good for us because that’ll lure the Japanese Developers to Wii U and that’ll be good because like the 3DS nintendo will pay to launch those titles in the west. Which will give the Wii U an cult status which will then bring the western developers who like to exploit that status

    • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

Considering how that Wii Party U bundle literally made the sales of the Wii U skyrocket in Japan (something it didn’t do overseas), it actually makes sense to release that Wii Sports bundle in Japan only.

  • BIG Franky

this will obviously then also need a Wii Remote packed in, correct?

    • ben

The mario bundle in Japan comes with a wiimote and sensor bar, It is a better deal than this.

  • DC777

Why you bundle these games that need a wii controller or two is beyond mii.

  • C.S. Bailey

Just got one of the refurbs on sale for my kid. This bundle would have been a time saver at the least.

  • NyallJodhan

I hope this bundle includes a Wii remote, for it would be pointless to buy a system with games you can’t play.
And, I can’t understand they take away the black coloured option. Why limit a choice?

  • Spaniard0069

Maybe Nintendo should release a similar bundle in the US. Only swap out Wii Sports Club and release a proper sequel. That may attract some of the confused Wii owners into purchasing a Wii U.
