Japanese sales numbers – Wii U stable, PS Vita edges out 3DS

Wii U sales

Over the past few weeks we’ve been watching Japanese sales charts closely, as the PlayStation 4 launched in Japan. The first week for the console was a strong one, but the second week saw the console losing 80% of its sales momentum. This week the slide isn’t so drastic, but a drop of around 50% did occur. The real surprise here is that the PS Vita has managed to edge out the Nintendo 3DS to claim the second spot.

Looking at software, we see that’s because of the release of Soul Sacrifice Delta, a Monster Hunter alike that Japan seems to enjoy. The only Wii U title to make the top 20 was Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which sits at spot number 15 with 6.7k sales.

1st ha ha man it feels great to say that but all joking aside people are actually buying the vita. I thought it was long dead.

    • Nothing5555

I think its a miss conception people have about the vita being “dead”, its overall sales are still in the millions.

      • classicgamer20

Yeah I guess I just never hear any news about games for it and usually when I hear people talk about it’s usually seen as a joke.

        • Ducked

That’s because most people don’t know what a PS Vita is. And they overpriced it when it came out, and now no one wants it because it doesn’t have there type of games in the west. PS Vita games right now mainly appeal to the Japanese crowd, and handhelds are much bigger in Japan.

The Vita would be more successful in North America and Europe if they would come out with games that appeal to western games. The ones they have right are just watered down PS3 games. Tearaway is an amazing game, but it’s going to take more than one to sell Vita’s.

          • oontz

Boarderlands 2 (PSVITA Slim) bundle is inbound. It will sell well.

        • Nothing5555

Kinda of sad really, I’m sure the Vita has its own merits and is probably a great system. The situation seems to be similar with the Wii U in terms of people joking about it being a dead system.

    • Matt Lambourne

I can understand the appeal of the Vita in Japan. There are a lot of Japanese games for it. It’s the western games that are lacking. I picked up a Vita recently and the hardware is amazing, but the lack of exclusive games is worrying.

      • Yep

Amazing old hardware like in cheap phone at the moment.

        • Matt Lambourne

‘Hardware’ doesn’t just mean the processor. It’s the whole package and not a single phone can even get close to it.

  • Shota

    psvita! nice

  • Captinn2

Those PS4 sales…they’re dropping..and the Playstation Vita for probably second or third time is beating the 3DS.
    Nice job, Sony. :P

    • URFTBOUND4LIFE .

Well of course they are,it’s March. Not a lot of people have extra dough lying around. Besides, not a lot of must-have games out for the PS4 right now. That’ll change though when games like FF15,KINGDOM HEARTS 3,METAL GEAR 5 comes out.

    • Ducked

All launch systems drop, there’s no good games right now on PS4.

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

    Not concerned.

  • ChrisCamp

If you add together all 3DS sales (both XL and regular) you still have vita trailing by a small margin.

    • Michael DeVore

Even when you add in the Vita TV, just to be fair, the Vita is still trailing by a few thousand. On the software side the Vita is still a homicide, and even on the long term hardware sales still look bleak.

      • XypherCode

Yeah but nobody really considers Vita TV to be in the portable console race here.

        • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

HEY GUYS LETS PLAY WITH VITA TV AT THE PARK

      • Capt. Smoker

You’d be surprised just how superior the software library is on the Vita in Japan, there’s possiblya good 15-20 games yet to be localized, Soul Sacrifice is a great game and the kind of game Japanese people like to play, I’m not surprised the sales picked up.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Yep. Do that with the PS4, and sales will grow as well.

          • Capt. Smoker

If they get back to how they operated on the ps2, I can easily see them hitting the 150+ million install base again, jrpg galore!

    • Ducked

And if you add the PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and PlayStation 3 against the 3DS LL, 3DS, and Wii U. PlayStation is winning.

      • ChrisCamp

true true… i thought we were talkin’ handhelds? 3DS / 3DS LL are essentially the same system

        • Ducked

          Well this is a Wii U site…

          • ChrisCamp

i was commenting on the title of the article “…PS Vita edges out 3DS” – are we arguing? don’t want to upset the kids

          • Ducked

            You make a good point…

          • ChrisCamp

I should have clarified that in my initial post

          • Jon

it is also a site that has a 3DS section.

      • BuckStud

…and if you look at how much profit Sony has made with their video gaming division since the original Playstation vs what Nintendo has made during the exact same time, Nintendo has slaughtered Sony.

    • Snake Eater

You mean this week, or of all-time

    • Forbsz

Why do people always have to turn gaming into a competition we weren’t bagging out on 3ds or Vita yet you still feel the need to say that…

      • Yep

It’s not people it’s kids who can’t efford all systems.

        • ChrisCamp

I’m actually just a sad sad 31-yr old man

      • ChrisCamp

As I stated earlier in the thread, I was referring to the title of the article “PS Vita edges out 3DS” – – I was just saying that 3DS LL and 3DS are essentially the same systems so in that case they did outsell

      • uptownsoul

People have to turn the consoles into a competition because just like politics or sports or religion, humans are a tribal species. We feel being in a majority helps vindicate our several-hundred-dollar video game hobby. And i’m very guilty of it too, thats why the Yankees are the best baseball franchise of all time and Playstation is better than Nintendo, IMO.

  • lonewolf

Actually if you combine the 3rds ll and the first 3rds sales. The 3rds is still leading.

  • JB

I’m suprise everyone in Japan doesn’t have a 3DS yet. I wonder if saturation has anything to do with their numbers?

Also I wonder if the PS4 is sort of helping prop the Vita’s sales, being that you can use one in conjuction with the PS4…

    • BIG Franky

yep, I was thinking that too… definitely the PS4 is helping out the vita… which most people thought would be the case…

      • wober2

I am surprised that nintendo has been so slow to use the 3ds and wiiu together. The gameboy advanced was more integrated with the gamecube then the 3ds and wiiu…

        • leafsfan73

That’s because if they do that, everyone will realize they should have done that in the first place, and replaced the gamepad with it, and used the saved resources to offer a more powerful machine and a better price point.

          • oontz

Which would have been awesome and a game changer. However the only downfall would be wiiu games on the 3ds would like like crap. Where as ps4 games on the vita still look beautiful.

    • Phillip Fauble

I hope so. Sony overall isn’t doing too well so the more of everything they can sell, the better.

    • J_Joestar

Soul Sacrifice Delta is probably doing more to push it.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

    Congrats, Sony.

    • jufhjfhf

congrats ? lolol they lost 80% in sales already…..Wii u is still selling ….

      • Ducked

PlayStation 4 is still outselling Wii U by a lot. What are you so joyful about?

        • Jon

this is the 3rd week of the PS4 in sales, they dropped about 75% between week 1 and week 2, now we see the numbers from week 3 and they dropped about 50%. Give it a few more weeks and we;ll see how the number compare.

          • Marcus Larsson

Lets see what happens in sales throughout the world in a couple of weeks :)

          • Jon

we already know the PS4 is doing better than the Wii U world wide and it will probably stay like that. This topic is talking about Japan.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Well overall, those of us who live in North America and Europe aren’t too concerned with Japanese sales. To be fair though, PS4 is new to Japan, so it’ll take some time for it to gain ground. Games like Kingdom Hearts III and FF XV will do some good when they do release. Right now, they just need a handful of games that cater to that region. Releasing the PS4 with little to offer Japanese gamers was the only real mistake Sony made.

        • jufhjfhf

I state facts not fantasy and who’s joyful….I know what I am reading where fools like you don’t….

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Wii U dropped this week, so that made your comment irrelevant. Vita, picked up this week, which is what I was referring to. If you were talking about PS4, then that was expected, as it’s new in Japan and won’t pick up on sales until games like KH3 and FF XIV hit Japan. Being delusional serves no purpose. ;P

        • jufhjfhf

we see who the delusional ones are (Gonzales) lol

      • Guest

        Who cares? PS4 is selling a lot.That’s kinda expected. Wii U doesn’t
need to directly compete with PS4. They just need to bust their asses
and make more must have titles and for God’s sake,ADVERTISE them to gain
the appeal of others. Not like people won’t buy a Wii U because they
got an PS4 or XBOX ONE,
I know your trolling but still…
That’s the problem with you gamers today so caught up in the “race” to see who can sell the most units without realizing games are about the overall experience. The games are what matters most. Sorry for the rant but you kids need to stop.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Well said, whoever you are since you deleted your comment. Lol. People do indeed worry too much about winning. Apparently congratulating a company for early success is such a forbidden thing on here. ;P

        • Yep

Kids will not stop. Kids will be fanboys.

        • jufhjfhf

the only one trolling is you and Wii u are doing fine and they are coming out with many games this year and next and third party are talking already to hop on board. And they talked already at how Wii u is a powerful system than thought .so you talk about the xbone lol now your the joke they are a total failure and selling nothing, Microsoft are already talking about getting rid of it…sorry to tell you but sony is in major trouble and they know the ps4 is NOT going to help them, so you the kid should grow up and do some research then talk…..cant you read ps4 slowed to the max already……so in other words you got a expensive blue ray player ;)

      • InterTreble

Ahahahah! Nice one, man! :) He’s definitely a Sony fanboy. This is the demonstration! ;)

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Sorry that you can’t agree with Sony’s early success, guess that’s your personal problem. Sony had a good week, so it’s fitting that I congratulate them. You should try it too instead of being blind, though, that may be too hard for a Nintendo fanboy to do. ;P

          • InterTreble

A success this piece of news? -80% of sales?! Ahahahah! You are so funny, mr Wrong! And so fanboy! I have no problem at all, you have many! Ahahah!

        • oontz

          Don’t you own a PS4?

          • InterTreble

            ??? Are you ok???

          • oontz

I am fine… but I remember you saying you own a wiiu and PS4…? Right? So to buy a PS4 you must be a “fan” of sony and their games… or why even buy one.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I do too a while back. Considering he can’t answer a simple question, it’s obvious he’s caught red handed. ;P

        • jufhjfhf

there’s no question that he’s a little Sony fan boy…

          • InterTreble

A very little FAN BOY, who spams all the day and has no time to play and enjoy. So stupid way to live. Indeed.

          • jufhjfhf

that’s why your here lol little spam boy

          • jufhjfhf

sorry I thought you were calling me a fan boy….after reading all your posts ,you were talking about the haters on here…..

          • InterTreble

Don’t worry, man! ;) Yeah, so many haters here. Especially the idiot numer one who spends all the day looking the board for new messages from you and me! ;) Where he finds time to play and enjoy, nobody knows! Only spamming and trolling, insulting and hating. What a poor life! :)

      • Guest

You should re-read the article. It’s talking about Vita, not PS4.

        • jufhjfhf

no you should read, its talking about the ps4 slowing….80% and now still 50% ,what grade are you in ? 1

    • Magnus Eriksson

Its well deserved. Everyone in that list got what they have deserved. :)

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Indeed. Wii U sales dropped as I expected considering there aren’t many good releases right now, and that goes for the rest of the world. Mario Kart 8 will sell, but I believe it will sell as much as Double Dash, or probably less. Guess we’ll see. While PS4 sales will drop down, with better releases coming this year, there will be a boost in time. I think Vita is a failure overall, but people in Japan are more into handheld devices than consoles these days, so I think Sony should focus on that region more and continue to bring JRPG games to it. So all in all, it was a pretty good week for Sony. Expect a few more crazies to respond to this post harshly soon. ;P

        • Wighead

For my part I think its a bad week for everyone (sony and Nintendo). Japan sales are not what they use to be. A few years back, Japan sales were the same as europe, then it was often times lower and now we can say most of the time it is lower and Europe is in a bad financial situation (well Japan also but still). These are not really good numbers for new consoles (Nintendo, Sony) even if the games are not to the taste of most japanese in the PS4 case. The handhelds numbers are also not that good compared to last gen in Japan. The population is getting older in Japan and I think it may be the reason why people are less interested in videogaming over the years. And since we, in NA, are getting older also, we may see also a drop in gaming money for this gen. Future will tell us if the gaming market is expanding or deflating.

    • jufhjfhf

for what already sales down 80% lool

  • Wighead

Wow, the PS4 did fall a lot for the third week after launch… It prooves that Japanese don’t care anymore for console gaming …

    • lonewolf88

more like japan isn’t stupid and knows ps4 has no games I don’t understand why people try to prove that it does when it doesn’t who wants knack?????????????

      • Brandon

Give it time, same as you gave the wii u. Its only been out for almost 4 months and alot of games will be coming this year.

      • oontz

Um… I’ve been playing games on my PS4. Not sure what logic your using to say “japan isn’t stupid and knows ps4 has no games”
If something has no games, then it has no games, which it doesn’t. Maybe it has games YOU DON’T LIKE. That’s your opinion.

Fact is it has games, and people are buying and playing them. Killzone moved over 2million units already. SM3DW which released around the same time is sitting at 1.87million units. So the PS4 DOES have games, and they are selling. Wether or not you find value in buying and enjoying those games is all a matter of opinion.

    • Darkness

It’s not that. The PS4 is all hype right now and most Japanese gamers want to see the games (that appeal to them). In the west the PS4 is still a bit too hyped for right now. I’m with the Japanese right now. Once games release that they like it will fly off shelves

      • Volfos

Soo, you’re one of those intelligent people who realize early adaption is a bad idea?

        SCREW YOU!!! (Joke)

        • Darkness

Darnit! You caught me! Just joking lol. It’s not that I like getting things early, if there is a reason to

    • classicgamer20

No Japan just doesn’t care about a very western influenced game library.

      • Wighead

Could be true, but if you look at the PS3 and PSvita numbers over there, you can see a trend that exist only over there and that is handhelds selling a lot more than consoles. Now the less than popular PSvita, anywhere else in the world, is selling the same, in Japan only, as a new console and 3x the PS3 which has a great japanese library. Time will proove if I’m wrong, but the last years trend seems to be there to stay.

        • Wighead

Oh, and I forgot something, we like big screen tvs, they like small devices…

  • Ducked

Like it or not, with the launch of PlayStation 4 in Japan, PlayStation is dominating. Even the PS Vita is selling decent. Wii U sales look pretty bad right now. Mario Kart 8 will help Wii U sales majorly, but the Wii U just needs more games to attract the Japanese. Yes I’m talking JRPG’s.

Of course North America is the biggest battleground so…

  • Wooopigsooie

I have no idea what Soul Sacrifice Delta is, but it sure must be a huge Japanese release as it propelled the Vita PAST the 3ds XL! Still the 3ds leads if you combine the two.
P.S. has the 2ds been released in Japan? There doesn’t really seem a need for it seeing how well the 3ds sells already but I didn’t know if it hasn’t been released there or the sales are just so minimal they’re not being recorded.

    • J_Joestar

It is a game from Keiji Inafune, typically considered one of the Vita’s MonHun replacements.

  • Wren Justin Umlauf

    Lol Xbox 360

  • TrueWiiMaster

The Vita didn’t outsell the 3DS, just the 3DS XL. The total 3DS sales are more than the Vita and Vita TV sales together.

    • J_Joestar

yeah, Vita + TV total to roughly 33k while 3DS + XL total to about 35k

  • TrueGamer

PS4 and PS Vita, and PS3 are outselling the Wii U and 3DS!

    http://fireden.net/4chan/images.4chan.org//vg/src/1386113740495.gif

    • Ducked

      I like it.

    • Jon

This is the Ps4 3rd week…. the first week was about 320k, last week was 65k, This week almost half that. In the Wii U’s 3rd week, it was at 121k infact, it took the Wii U 6 weeks to get those the numbers the PS4 is selling now.. There is a noticeable difference here. I am willing to bet that you’ll see the PS4 around similar numbers to the Wii U in Japan.

      • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

The only difference is that the Wii U launched in the holidays while the PS4 launched in late february though.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          That’s a good point.

    • ThunderGod_Cid

      Actually, it’s not.
Don’t get me wrong, it IS selling well, but it’s pretty far from “printing money.”

In order for the PS4(or the Vita) to be “printing money” it would first have to be profitable, which it isn’t. They’re taking a loss on every unit sold.

    • MerryBlind .

lol love the Mark Cerny portrait in the background XD

    • Lens Durandisse

Ps4 sales are very bad in Japan, so next-gen week, 3DS suppose to lead and after selling vita games, Nintendo will won like in Christmas :P

  • jufhjfhf

wii u is moving forward with sales and the ps4 already slowing down ….sorry ps4 lovers well its showing that the Wii u is the best system to have…ps4 with a 80% drop in sales hmm not looking good for them at all and the xbone is done….Wii u….is it….

    • Marcus Larsson

Haha man… I guess your imagineland has third party support as well

      • Daniel Gonzalez

These fans have a silly notion that Mario Kart 8 will get the Wii U back on top. It’s just going to Mario Kart Double Dash sales all over again this generation. Imagineland indeed.

      • jufhjfhf

your in the fantasy world buddy ,wake up….

    • Daniel Gonzalez

80% drop in Japan, not worldwide. Lol. Sales in North America and Europe are far better. Wii U world wide, isn’t even hitting 40k in a week.

      • Jaymes Deen

So let me understand what you are sayin, we can see that PS4 sales have declined since launch in Japan. And what you are saying is that in N.A and Europe sales have “not” declined compared to their original launch date #’s. So month to month sales from Dec to Feb have not been going downfrom the previous month. I did not know that..

        • oontz

” I did not know that..”

          Now you do.

          • Jaymes Deen

Great thanks for the info; do you actually have the link showing these “non-downward” trend for N.A and Europe sales, thanks. Cause I really didn’t know.

    • InterTreble

PS4 is a fail in Japan. It is already evident. Just 1-2 weeks and it will be far behind 3DS. And Nintendo will be at the top again there. As always. Let haters and Sony fanboys tell no sense. You wrote right.

      • oontz

“PS4 is a fail in Japan”

So is the wiiu also a fail in Japan? Cause it sold much less than the PS4.

      • jufhjfhf

that’s right, they are afraid they blew all that money just for a blue ray player, so they are trying to make them selves feel better….but reality is the story not their fantasy and hate and thinking the Wii u is a fail and blah blah blah…..they cant even read the article properly so that tells me their intelligence level is about kindergarten to max grade 2….

        • InterTreble

The worst of this world are Sony fanboys who spam and troll all the days and say the fanboys are who disagree with them. They are useless people, but shout much more than the others. What a poor life, indeed… Let’s come back playing and enjoying friend. Let’s leave them alone with their own stupidity.

  • jufhjfhf

some of you on here are really stupid and cant read……ps4 lost 80% in sales, now they have slowed right down but the Wii u is still selling at a pace…..you ps4 lovers were saying oh they will sell a trillion consoles lol but reality is they have slowed by big margins….so wake up and smell the Wii u lol……..nobody cares for another blue ray player and new news shows at how strong the Wii u system is from what they thought….and third party gamers are going to make games for them….when Mario cart 8 comes out the system will blow off the shelves….so many games coming out for the wii u this year and next…..so read it closely…..

    • J_Joestar

to be fair, a lot of the 3rd party issues are more a problem of anti-nintendo prejudice, console limitations were merely a convenient excuse.

      • jufhjfhf

ps4 is not doing as good as they thought buy numbers dropping like that its not good….xbone is finished and ps4 has slowed already and the Wii u is selling steady as it states ….

        • Brandon

Your forgetting this is only japan sales. Overall the ps4 is selling like crazy and cant sell more, because of stock. Ps4 already passed the wii u in sales. Xbox is not finished and niether is wii u.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t think he/she understands the difference of sales in Japan vs North America and Europe.

          • Jaymes Deen

Sales for Feb were higher than Jan for the PS4? I didn’t know that, that’s pretty good. Do u have the #'(link) for both months. For N.A and Europe only, thanks

          • jufhjfhf

actually the ps4 has halted world wide we got it all over our stores and its not moving no more and the xbone is done their sales are 0 ….why put the wii u in the same category as xbone ? lol and no the ps4 has not passed the Wii u yet….but are close….

          • Brandon

Ps4 sold 6 million and wii u sold 5.8 million. Im pretty sure ps4 passed the wii u, and yes in most places the ps4 is hard to find. Xbox one sales are not at 0 either.

          • jufhjfhf

nope and hers something you could google on todays news ;)))

Wii U Sales Outpacing PlayStation 4’s in Japan

Wii U launch sales were stronger than PS4 sales in Japan

Google them both it seems like these jealous sites like you wont post it ;)))))))))

        • Daniel Gonzalez

PS4 is selling fine world wide. I don’t think one region makes a console obsolete. Lol. It’s numbers dropped because there’s not many games that cater to the Japanese gamers as of yet. That will change in time when PS4 has more exposure there. You do know it’s new there, right? Wii U worldwide, is doing poorly in sales. Japanese sales so far are the only sales that have been steady.

Keep in mind too, that Japan is a small country and sales numbers like 8k-20k is normal numbers there. In North America or Europe, that would be considered horrible. You’re jumping the gun.

          • jufhjfhf

sorry buddy but your wrong, and japan is not a small country lol and Sony is in major trouble right now and the ps4 they said wont help them and xbone one is the total failure not the Wii u like you think and would like it to be…because they are still selling but we do see the ps4 slowing already world wide and if your not willing to buy 3 million then its at a halt ,stop your fantasy already ,just accept you got a expensive blue ray player….

        • 504HotBoy

PS4 is still selling worldwide pretty well. Mainly in US & Europe. So it’s still doing great overall. It’s declining in Japan, because it has no major Japanese titles that appeal to their market. As I predicted this before it even launched in Japan. I proved my delusional friend wrong. Im still smiling because of it. Wii U did better in sales than PS4 in it’s first few weeks. Most so cause it was around the holiday season. Nevertheless it still did much better. PS4 sales will pick back up, when some major Japanese games hit. I’m not to sure about Metal Gear Solid 5, cause it’s also on PS3. But I know for sure Final Fantasy XV & Kingdom Hearts 3. Thing about that, is those games are most likely a year away. Wii U will pick back up in sales when Mario Kart 8 is released, as it is the Number 2 most wanted game in Japan, right behind Persona 5.

          • jufhjfhf

ps4 is not selling great ,its slowed world wide….no more fantasy lets start talking reality….video games are not selling as good as they used to in the 90s,and sony is in big trouble and Microsoft is going to het rid of the xbone because its a total failure with no sales….

        • oontz

“ps4 is not doing as good as they thought”

          You’re right… it’s doing BETTER.

    • Marcus Larsson

What is saying the ps4 “steady number” wont be 25 000+?

      • ben

If you remove the Knack numbers you will see the actual PS4 sales. The Knack consoles were still pre-order editions. It actually only sold 18,000 new consoles.

        • Marcus Larsson

So what if they were pre-ordered?
          They’ve got delivered this week?

Whatever lame claim you are giving, you and me both know that Japan Will buy many more ps4s as the popular games starts rolling in.

          • ben

Well, we could see an interesting sales curve. The Ps3 started badly and ended very strong. I can easily see the opposite happening with the PS4. The ga,mes just aren’t coming.

          • Marcus Larsson

Metal gear and infamous this month. Final fantasy and daylight in april. Watch dogs in may.
            I know it will sell.
And we will read more and more articles on wii i standing still

          • ben

Metal gear is a 2 hour demo. Infamous is one game. Final Fantasy has no release date. Watch_dogs is a ps3 port. Great.

Well, we can only wait and see if Mariokart does anything for sales.

          • Marcus Larsson

Metal gear will still Nice consoles and its not a demo but a prologue.
Watch dogs is still a game you want for a next gen console.

Yeah Mario kart will move about as much as super Mario 3D world.
With all these articles more people are aware of the state of nintendo so they wont buy the wii u until it is dead-cheap.

          • ben

Supermario 3d world helped to sell over 600,000 consoles.

I don’t see the Wii U getting any cheaper until the PS4 drops in price.

          • tom

Good point but i think Mario Kart 8 will move way more consoles vs Mario 3d World because of online play plus a huge fan base!

    • GregoryTheRainMaker

You are kinda delusional about the Third Party support…half of it is Nintendo’s fault and other half are the developers. Nintendo is going to have to take the first steps to create better relationships with Third Parties otherwise it’s going to stay the same.

  • leafsfan73

Looks like Japan isn’t that interested in the Wii U. Sales are consistent at 8000 a week. That’s not even 100,000 a year. PS3 outsells it consistently every week by 1.5x. the ps3. Even their home territory is giving it a “meh”. Shame. I like mine.

    • jufhjfhf

      I guess your stupid..lol….

    • William

I think your math is a little off. 8,000 a week (with 54 weeks in a year, because these are weeks, not months) is 432,000.

    • leafsfan73

sorry, not stupid. Had months stuck in my head (12 X8 instead of 52 x 8). Anyways. still meh. that’s still very low. That’s only a bit over 2 million for a 5 year life cycle. 52 weeks in a year by the way.

      • William

I stand corrected. 52 weeks in a year. That’s a little over 2 million in 5 years IF there are no spikes in sales, which there will be with holidays, and massive console movers like Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., Zelda U, and potentially even X. I’ll wager to say the Wii U will hit 10 million in sales by mid 2015 at the very latest.

    • 504HotBoy

PS3 has more games that appeal to their market. It’s the best console to own in Japan right now in terms of the type of games that appeal to the Japanese.

  • lonewolf88

3ds sales are going down in japan because everyone in japan owns one.

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I think you underestimate how many people are in Japan… XD

      • lonewolf88

or your underestimating how many people own a 3ds it japan :D

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

          also true XD

  • Magnus Eriksson

Eeeeeh… Wii U isnt stable at all. It have dropped with 1000 units the last month. For a console selling 7700 units thats kind of much.

    • Yen

It didn’t even go down by 1000 it went down by about 500. Even if it went down by 1000 it can still be considered stable at 8000 if it average out over a few weeks which so far it has.

      • Magnus Eriksson

        Nope. 1000 units

        • ben

Last, week 8,204/ this week 7,773

Now if you minus the second number from the first number you get the sales difference. It’s actually closer to 400

          • Magnus Eriksson

Now read again what I wrote.

          • uPadWatcher

            Shut up Mag.

          • ben

Yeah, the bigger issue is that the sales should have been higher in Feb. What with the release of a game. But still, I honestly don’t know why it is selling at all this month. It has nothing in Japan. At least Europe and America have indie games. Japan has hardly any Indie games.

          • Arobadope

I’d love to but the grammar in your statement was so atrocious it hurt reading it.

        • Yen

Yea I see what you did there. Doesn’t change my point because even if you’re going by the month, if March’s sales average at 8000 a week then it would still be stable.

  • http://doitbloggystyle.tumblr.com/ Nemerlebb

How does Vita “edges out the 3DS” if combined sales of LL and regular surpass the overall numbers of Vita purchased? I cringe at basic logic fails

    • ETeach

Huh, I just noticed that myself. You’re right.

    • Kriffix

hmm, indeed. I think this article deserves a little update.

      • http://doitbloggystyle.tumblr.com/ Nemerlebb

It won’t be a click-bait article if they update it.

    • oontz

      They are two different handhelds.

      • http://doitbloggystyle.tumblr.com/ Nemerlebb

No they aren’t. And even IF they were the article said “edges out 3DS”. We have 3DS LL and 3DS. So the title fails in that situation too. Bye.

        • oontz

I never said the title didn’t fail.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Touchy aren’t ya? Combined sales, yes. However, 3DS and the LL are considered two different handhelds, so that is why they aren’t combined. 2DS is another example. While the title can be misleading to most, it makes sense considering it’s referring to Vita and 3DS LL sales, and not 3DS.

          • http://doitbloggystyle.tumblr.com/ Nemerlebb

Not touchy at all but I don’t like someone insulting my intelligence. Here are the charts according to a big French website: http://www.jeuxvideo.com/news/2014/00070946-ventes-de-consoles-au-japon-la-ps4-bientot-depassee.htm That says it all and it will be the last thing I post on the subject. Last time I will be visiting the site anyways since, even if I have divergent point of views, I like a little substance/brains when I have a debate ;) Cheers

  • Brandon

Why do we even judge the sales of this chart, this is only japan. Lets see North America or Europe.

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

those numbers only release monthly I believe, so this is all we have at the moment

  • Donaald

    PS4 is declining fast…

    • oontz

      LOL

  • sd

Off topic slightly. I have been stating that I am pretty certain the Wii U is doomed due to the slow release schedule this year. BUT how many consoles do you think mario Kart will shift. Baring in mind the game often sells 10-18 million copies. It lowest ever sale amount is almost double the number of Wii U console sales. I would really like my predictions of failure to be incorrect.

So who thinks Wii U console sales will increase by a couple of million simply due to mario kart?

    • Daniel Gonzalez

If it were on the Wii, I’d agree that it would sell a couple million and then some. Seeing as the Wii U isn’t even close to what the Wii was, a couple million may be pushing it. I’m thinking a million is possible, but I don’t believe it’ll be a huge seller like Mario Kart Wii. In my opinion of course.

      • David Trail

It will sell 3 million minimum. And will rise to about 6 to 8 million at the end of Wii U’s life time.

      • sd

I think it will sell 2-3 million copies on the Wii U minimum. The reason is that by the end of May there is very little else new to buy. But I am also wondering how many consoles it will help shift. Can mario Kart alone help the Wii U sell 1-2 million consoles? That’s my real curiosity.

  • Dark-Link73

I bet the reason for the increase in Vita sales is the PS4. Smart move linking them both. Nintendo failed to capitalize in this concept that they introduced back with the GCN/GBA and the Wii/DS. Look now who is reaping the benefits from another Nintendo innovation.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I would say that is certainly possible early on. Though, Vita has been getting good releases in that region, so a fair amount of the rise in sales are that too. Vita is a failure in other regions, but In Japan, it’s doing okay.

      • David Trail

        It is a failure nevertheless.

        • oontz

It’s not a failure by any means. I would define failure as the Virtual Boy. The vita is still selling every week all around the world. The numbers aren’t the best, but it’s still selling. It’s anything but a failure. Hell you own one and claim to love it.

      • Dark-Link73

I know I’d be a sucker and buy a Vita if I were to get a PS4 just so I could stream my games to it, lol.

  • Leo

Shocking how bad PS4 is selling in Japan. At this pace it will be on WiiU level numbers in just two weeks.

  • leo

wii u needs to push at least 10,000 a week

    • jufhjfhf

no they don’t ,they are pushing already 7,000 still a week and Sony has slowed and xbone one will have to sell 100,000 a week since they are a total failure…but reality is ps4 is not going to save Sony the company as a whole, because they are in major trouble….

      • leo

        they sold Vaio

  • WhataShame

No surprises here… including the inaccurate, misleading click bait title. Again.

  • ETMew2348

your doing great (Microsoft) if your getting outsold by the PsP
