Japanese sales numbers – Nintendo takes back seat to Dark Souls II

Wii U sales

This week’s sales numbers for both hardware and software are in from Japan and it’s not surprising to see Dark Souls II completely consume the country. From Software’s brutal action RPG has been popular in the country since the introduction of Demon’s Souls, so the fact that the top spot is claimed by Dark Souls II is no surprise to anyone.

Nintendo 3DS manages to hold on well with six of the top ten games belonging on the platform. The surprise runner up here is the PlayStation 3, which managed to have three of the top ten titles. PS Vita even managed to claim a top ten spot, while both the recently launched PlayStation 4 and Wii U slipped out of the top ten. The closest PS4 game is Battlefield 4 at the number 12 spot, while Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze sits at number 17.

Surprisingly, the Dark Souls II Xbox 360 edition managed to hit the charts at spot 14, despite the console not doing particularly well in the region. Japanese folks love their Dark Souls.

To be expected. Dark Souls seems to be popular for some reason. I personally don’t like it though.

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

I love it. Dark Souls II combines some of the mechanics from Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls to make the perfect blend of a game for people who like hardcore action RPGs.

      • jackie

I love me some dark souls also

      • oontz

Are you going to issue an update to your previous article and reflect the currect financial status of Nintendo? Or are you going to stick with your two year old, outdated data claiming Nintendo can run a deficit for 38 years?

        • Zuxs13

That info was current. No out dated. Guess you should do so research before bashing her.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            June 2012 is current?

          • Zuxs13

Her source is from a 2012 article but with the current year sales over with and losses it doesn’t change anything about their financial status.

          • oontz

First off the numbers Ashley gave are a direct quote from the article written in 2012.

Now if you actuay look at nintendo’s own financials for 2013 (information that Nintendo makes public) Ashley’s numbers are off by about 3.5 billion USD. There is no other way to try and play it. Even Forbes wrote an article in January 2014 showing the new numbers.

Ashley clearly made a massive mistake and should do the right thing and issue an update to this site.

          • Zuxs13

where are you getting this $3.5 from? As of last year they had $10 billion in the bank (http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/17/does-it-really-matter-if-the-wii-u-fails) and still earned profits for 2013 (http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2013/04/24/nintendo-announces-fiscal-year-2013-report-fy-2014-projections/) but had an operating loss of only $355 million. So how does that add up to 43.5 billion?

          • oontz

“So how does that add up to 43.5 billion?”

You lost me with that last number.

          • novasikz

He accidentally put a 4 in there lol. Yes the most current info should be used, but I REALLY don’t think stockholders etc come to this site for updates, so chll

          • oontz

“Yes the most current info should be used, but I REALLY don’t think stockholders etc come to this site for updates, so chll”

So you’re totally okay with this site posting 2 year old financial data as current news and falsely claiming…

“Nintendo has enough cash in the bank to run a deficit for 38 years. Nintendo isn’t doomed and its financial report is the proof.”

It is nothing but a complete lie being used to generate ad revenue as a form of click bait. Maybe you’re fine with articles like that, which in itself is kinda sad.

Maybe we should just start calling the site weeklyworldwiinews.com?

            http://weeklyworldnews.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/fatcatcover.png

          • Daniel Gonzalez

He wasnt’ talking about stockholders. Lol. I believe he’s talking about posters that visit this site are being fed outdated numbers.

          • Zuxs13

            3.5 billion

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I love the made up numbers.

          • oontz

That information was from Nintendo financial records in 2011, the article Ashley sourced was even written in June 2012 (it states the date RIGHT ON THE ARTICLE)

Not sure how you think data that was sourced from 2+ years ago in 2012 is still current in 2014.

          • oontz

None of that info was current. it’s already been two years since that “recent” article and Nintendo has already burned through almost half of what they had in 2012 (from $10.5 billion USD to about $7 billion USD.

So in 2 years Nintendo already spent 3.5 billion of what they had in the bank in 2012 ($10.5 billion). To survive for 38 years would mean Nintendo spending less than $0.2 billion a year. So by Ashley’s math nintendo has already used up over 15 of those 38 years she claims they can survive.

Research and knowledge is your friend. Not to mention very basic mathematics skills.

          • Zuxs13

So here is some math for you since you obviously only want to look at the links Ashley provided then go on hearsay about where Nintnedo’s fiances are. They currently have more cash on hand then they did the last two years, so they haven’t gone “down” like you said.
            http://markets.ft.com/research//Markets/Tearsheets/Financials?s=7974:TYO&subview=BalanceSheet&period=a

I don’t get why you are arguing against this type of article. There are dozens of dozens of sites including ones with financial experts that have said the exact same thing.

          • oontz

First the only link provided by Ashley was to a two year old article which sited sources from a game magazine that isn’t even in business anymore.

Second and most important… that data you provided isn’t current either, it clearly states…

“Fiscal data as of Mar 31 2013″

All new data shows Nintendo sitting on about 8.6 billion USD and about to make a 1.2 billion USD stock buy back. This leaves them at around 7.4 billion, almost half of what Ashley sited in her piece.

          • Zuxs13

Isn’t that 8.6 in cash they are sitting on, not to include other investments and assets which put them at about $20 billion in value, more than Sony is worth. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=747631

I am not sure why she used that article to source when IGN just did an article back in February out lining all the current financials and that they could survive another 20-30 years with a $250 million operating loss.

  • gamingpalooza

I cannot believe that Nintendo really ain’t trying hard to force developers to release their games on the Wii U… they are being way to kind about this crap. Nintendo has so much money that they could buy out nearly every damn developer that exist… so why not fork out a little money and turn some big hits into Wii U exclusives? Force people to buy the Wii U for blockbuster games… I love Nintendo, but seriously… its time to throttle into aggressive mode and get your asses in gear.

    • jackie

Nintendo has alot of money but just buying people out is not that easy. Obviously for some reason these developers dont want to jump on board with nintendo. I use to blame the developers but now I believe im starting to blame nintendo. They have alot of money but the future is not looking to bright. Hopefully there stubbornness doesnt bring them down and they make the necessary changes

    • Chris

Sorry but Nintendo shouldn’t “force” people to but the Wii U. People should want to buy one. The question is how to get them to do buy it. I believe that Nintendo made the mistake of marketing the Wii U as a family console. They now are know as a family gaming system which it is a great family system, but the hardcore gamers will flock towards the Xboxes, or PS’s. Now for the developers do we really know why third party developers stay away from Wii U? Is the game pad before its time? Don’t think so. Is it Nintendo’s fault? Could be. Are they not putting games out because Wii U was sold as the family system? More likely then not.
I am a Nintendo fan and will always be one. We have a Wii U and we love it. I try to support the third party developers, but I don’t like Call of Duty, not a racing game fan. Some of the games I’ve seen that are coming out don’t do it for me. I want to get Zombie U, but I won’t pay $60.00 for a game that is almost 2 yrs old (I don’t shop online and I try to shop local).

      • bistricky

Its amazing how different prices are for wii u games in different areas ….. in Canada, Best Buy is selling Zombie U right now for $14.99.

  • jackie

Wii u seems to be hitting new lows every week. Its not getting any better. I continuously see nintendo get beat by old ass ps3. Wii u should be having more games being developed for it cuz its newer but ps3 always seems to have something each month that really helps out. Whats up with vita all of a sudden getting some glory

    • companyoflosers

its japan, the land of the rising handhelds. its pretty much the only place the vita has seen anything resembling success.

      • jackie

Seems like sony should focus vita in the east and console dominance in the west

    • Rich Garriques

ps3 has been around for 8 years. wii u has been around for a year. you people need to stop comparing new gen console sales to last gen console sales. the reason ps3 is still selling well is because more people know ps3 then they know wii u. the reason ps3 has more games coming out for it is because its been around its pretty much commercial by now.

      • jackie

By your logic ps3 should also be outselling ps4 and xbox 1 but its not. Just face it nintendo is screwing up right now. People dont know of wii u cuz dumbasses at nintendo cant advertise for shit and they cant release big games each month. Games are 3 or 4 months apart

        • Guest

So what if PS4 is outselling PS3 now. There’s still 80m+ PS3’s out there. It’s software has a far bigger consumer base than PS4!

          • jackie

Why cant the wii be alive and kickin still. Ps3 and wii came out at the same time

          • Dark-Link73

Because the Wii was targeting the fanboy and the “family” demographics while the PS3 target the usual fanboy and avid gamer (I hate the term hardcore) demographics. So now only the fanboy demographic, along with a the few avid gamers it had, have moved on from Wii to Wii U because the Wii support is diminishing at an accelerated rate, whereas Sony is going to milk the PS3 cow, just like they did with PS2, and support it for years to come. The Wii’s family demographic (a.k.a. casual gamers) stopped using their Wii’s and support is basically dead.

          • jackie

Exactly ps3 will last atleast 2 more years.

          • Dark-Link73

The way Sony milked the PS2 cow? I say at least five years. Although Sony is in a whole different situation today as they were 8 years ago. They aren’t spending millions on a format war as they were back then (HD-DVD vs BD) nor they are losing around $500 per console (PS3 cost like $1,100 to manufacture back then). So they might just milk the PS3 four years, lol.

          • Capt. Smoker

Wii is dead, PS3 has Persona 5 coming out, nuff said.

          • Dark-Link73

That’s just what I said, lol. Maybe you meant to reply to the original post?

          • Capt. Smoker

Lol sorry, that was meant for jackie, your comments were close to one another

          • lonewolf

The wii sales also in some regions of the world there are even games coming out for it.

        • ETMew2348

dumb asses (harsh) bad advertizing (^_^)

      • Capt. Smoker

To be honest, that’s a pretty empty excuse, Wii U is great n all but games sell and old or new, ps3 has games coming left and right, Wii U as it stands for a while has nothing, nothing worthy anyway, it shouldn’t be like that but until Nintendo reach out, that’s how it’ll probably sell.

        • Pedro Gomez

          Nothing worthy?
Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Wind Waker HD, New Super Mario Bros. U/Luigi U, Mighty Switch Force, Sonic Lost World…

          • Capt. Smoker

All games gone by, though good, have been and gone, too many gaps between games, that was my point, not enough games coming up, Wii U needs some more momentum and purpose, though I won’t complain, it’s my anime machine and theres a lot of anime out there lol

    • gtosheex

I don’t know all the facts, but I think it’s because PS3 was the worst selling console for last generation and now that it’s dirt cheap (compared to it’s initial ridiculous price) people have been buying it. Vita is only getting higher sales because of it’s compatibility with PS4 im guessing…?

      • jackie

Actually 360 was the worst selling. Sony systems usually always have a long lifespan. Ps3 is doing good cuz it has the right gaming library for all different typse of gamers. Will take a while for ps4 to fully replace it. The original wii has beem out of service for a while. I mean they still make the console but games no longer come to it

        • gtosheex

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_million-selling_game_consoles

Actually it looks like i was right. Did some research and it seems ps3 overtook 360 for a bit at the end of 2012 but 360 climbed back up at end of 2013. (probably because all the replacements for red rings haha)

But anyway my point was that the ps3 and 360 were quite expensive in the beginning and now that they are cheap they are seeing constant sales as opposed to the other systems. Its honestly a good bang for your buck.

    • YoG99

By the way, if you add 3DS and 3DS LL sales, it beats the Vita !

      • jackie

Lol im gonna give vita the win today. Next week could change though

    • Gabe Hoffman

To be fair those numbers have hardly changed since January. Its been hovering around the 8000 mark for quite some time

      • jackie

There sales are already bad so to go from 8000 to 7000 is not good even it is just 1500 drop off. There over 100 million people in Japan. To sell only 7000 is pretty bad

        • Gabe Hoffman

Did you ever remember how sales dipped to around 2000 than shot back up when they came out with that Wii U Party U bundle. People could potentially be holding out for that Wii Sports premium bundle that’s coming out in the next week or too. Sales don’t seem good but they seem to be at a steady pace at the moment. You also fail to take into consideration the PS3 has been out for much longer and is far more cheaper and with a more established library. PS2 outsold PS3 for several years this is nothing new really

          • jackie

Wii came out at the same time as ps3 so why is it not outselling wii u also

          • thedeciderU

because nintendo stopped support and the last couple years only had a couple really notable games. and it got slammed with shovelware garbage. nintendo should probably focus on something that is tried and true like a powerhouse console/standard controller, and innovate with accessories and gameplay experiences as opposed to putting all the eggs in one basket for that silver bullet (gamepad).

i worked for a company who put their entire budget into getting our product into best buy stores. it ended up in the stores, but there were no funds left and it wasn’t advertised so it failed and the company shut down. now, i know nintendo won’t be shutting down, but they made the gamepad the new thing, just like wii had the wii mote. most people bought it, then it sat for a long time. i only use my wii motes occasionally, and only for games like mario galaxy, or if there isn’t another better controller available.

the gamepad, as we’ve seen with some games can really add a lot to the experience, but no one is doing anything with it anymore, not even nintendo (from what i’ve played).

    • wober2

Hopefully something will shake up nintendo to cater more to their fans. I do like their games but sometimes I feel like they are shameful to have adult men as fans…

    • Kyle

Although I agree, Wii U is maintaining numbers each week.

    • The Clockwork Being

I know right. Today marks the anniversary of Super Metroid. Wouldn’t it be a good time to hype people up. Nintendo should at least do something.

  • Xero Azure
    • companyoflosers

i mean it would be great if they had it.. but dark souls really isnt that great of a fit with the wii u. good luck though.

      • Pedro Gomez

Nintendo gamers like actually-challenging games and whoever plays Nintendo plays real hardcore, not grittybrown hardcore.

        • companyoflosers

yes im not disputing that, it just doesnt seem like the type of game nintendo usually associates itself with in terms of content. i wouldnt be displeased at all to see it on wii u but i just dont see it happening. id be happy to be wrong.

  • Nolan ArchLord

No one should be surprised by this. Dark Souls 2 has huge hype surrounding it and it’s a fantastic game. Wish Nintendo would’ve fronted some cash and put it on Wii U. Inventory management on the game pad would be sublime!

    • companyoflosers

dark souls would be REALLY out of place on the wii u. would it have worked, ya. would it have been fun to play, ya. would nintendo get out there and get in contact with the people behind it to make arrangements… well they dont have the best history with that. if the makers of game dont push to get involved with nintendo, it doesnt happen. nintendo operates under a “if they want it bad enough, theyll figure it out” mentality when it comes to third parties. its why they shipped out all those wii u devkits (that all got returned) without so much as a word on what they expected people to use them for or how to program for them.

      • jackie

It would be out of place but this some of the change nintendo needs. If they cant get this game then develop your own ip of this game just for nintendo. Those guys have a hard time listening up at nintendo

        • thedeciderU

nintendo needs a change of management, plain and simple. what they’re doing is not working out. move iwata to another position, move someone else into his position. market. and build up relationships with these companies. get games on your damn system that are multiplats. that way your consumers can have the nintendo ips and the multiplats. yes, some of them have come to wiiu, but too many have been gimped. i have several, and many are good, many are garbage.

      • Nolan ArchLord

Quite the elaborate post there, but you’re preaching to someone who knows Nintendo’s game quite well and there game’s a flop.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Wii U sales are not steady at all. They are decling from week to week. Why being dishonest when the real phrase is “Nintendo keep dropping/falling/failing” every week?

    • Ducked

Because its a Wii U site, and they’re afraid of upsetting nintendo fanboys.

      • Magnus Eriksson

But you agree that 1128 fewer consoles are quite many when weekly sales was 8000? 7 more months in this pace there wouldnt be a Wii U anymore.

        • jackie

Wow it looks its possible wii u could be outsold by old ass psp at some point. CraaaazzYyyy

        • Ducked

I do agree, its time they take notice. I’m sure sales will increase when mk8 comes out, but by then sales could be as low as 5000.

      • Rich Garriques

but why come on a wii u site and start bashing the wii u. what type of person are you?. get a fucking life

        • Ducked

I like the wii u, how am I bashing it? I’m just being honest here

          • jackie

I like the wii u also but im not gonna lie to myself and say nothing is wrong

          • Magnus Eriksson

I could have liked the Wii U, but im first of all a gamer – and it doesnt got games. Kind of frustrating.

          • jackie

Yeah gaming is a hobby for me I cant just play wii u games. Gotta have me some playstation and xbox also. I gotta have all 3. Wii u is sucking ass right now. Excuse my language but im the kind of lady that talks like that lol

          • Magnus Eriksson

It got potential, and the few games it got are quite good. But there are too much lacking to give the good experience. Especially games that legitimize this pad thing.

          • Lil J Moore

WiiU has a bunch of potential that much is true. But the potential is being wasted as there’s nothing going on for it. After SM3dW two months of nothing, then DKTF, but now again nothing for 3 months then Mario Kart. Ok What next? More months of nothing before E3?

          • Magnus Eriksson

Its horrible. And its been along for some time now. This shouldnt be happening this late in the cycle. Two games in six months this late in its existence. Launch is always slow, and Nintendo always stop to support their products in the end of a consoles lifetime. But this should be its primetime. The last Nintendo Direct kind of proved that they are uninterested to support Wii U anymore.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I’ve seen worse language on this site. Feel free. Lol.

          • jackie

            Yesssss lol

          • Fierce-Deity Link

“and it doesnt got games” – magnus

“and the few games it got are quite good” – magnus

lol… so it does have games… go figure ;)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Nor should you. If you think there is problems with the Wii U, feel free to voice them. There are people who are willing to listen. :)

          • oontz

            Exactly

        • Magnus Eriksson

Why do you go to the internet? Go seek a shrink instead if you have difficulty to handle other peoples opinionts and thoughts.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

That would be a good idea, except I think a shrink would need a shrink just after one session.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

So you’re saying that people who own a Wii U like Ducked should shut up instead of voicing opinions? In this case, I agree considering you responded with the typical fanboy “get a fucking life” running gag. Well played. You only prove the point of the demographic on this site. ;P

        • The Clockwork Being

          Bashing? No. Constructive criticism? Yes

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        That’s an accurate reasoning. :)

    • SandritoNL

You’re being dishonest aswell, the drop in 4 weeks is 8407-7654= 753 (in 4 weeks), don’t count the week it’s compared to (week 5: 8782) into your 4 week statement. You manipulate the numbers in your own likings, although i assume that because you are one of the biggest haters on the wii u on this forum. Despite that, i do think you have a point: the Wii U isn’t quite steady, it’s not a good thing. The sales should slowly climb in times of drought thanks to the already released games and not slowly decrease week by week. The ‘no drought in 2014′ statement by nintendo seemed absolutely bullsh*t unfortunately…

      • Magnus Eriksson

Nope. You clearly dont know how to count. Ill help you.
        THIS WEEK = 7,654. One week ago= 7,773. Two weeks ago =8,204. Three weeks ago = 8,407. FOUR WEEKS AGO = 8,782.

        Now shut up!

        • Lil J Moore

          BAM!!!!! You showed him

        • SandritoNL

You clearly cant: a week contains a whole 7 days. You said it yourself: this week=1 a week age=2, 2 weeks ago=3, 3 weeks ago=4. The sales numbers contain a whole week, so if you have 5 weeksale numbers you always have counted 5 whole weeks. Dont see this comment as an attack, because i do think you have a point, but do the math again and admit your mistake. Have a nice day

          • Magnus Eriksson

I wont admit such a thing at all, because thats not how you refer to sales numbers. But that really doesnt matter. I understand what you try to say. You understand what I say too? Do you agree on the proposition “Wii U sales are dropping” or do you think “Wii U sales are steady” to be more accurate?

          • TheRealTruthTeller

OOOOOOOOOOOOOH DAMN SON YOU GOT FUCKED, WANT SOME BURN HEAL WITH THAT!?

        • TheGamesLover

SandritoNL is right: the numbers contains the sales of a whole week (=7 days), if you pick the first 4 numbers: 7654, 7773, 8204, 8407: then you have the sales of 4 weeks ;)

          • Magnus Eriksson

I have already answered to this.

          • TheGamesLover

With my math the Wii U sold 7773 units a week ago, which is correct

          • Magnus Eriksson

How many did it sell 2 weeks ago? 3 weeks ago and 4 weeks ago with your math?

    • thedeciderU

love the zombie fanboy mario hahaha

  • Donaald

PS4 is still declining but Vita is climbing, weird…

    • InterTreble

Sony fanboys of this site cannot stand this! ;)

      • oontz

Lol, is someone is a sony fanboy then surely they would be happy that the sony psvita is selling well. I mean it is a Sony console right. Sometimes things you say make no sense.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

I think it’s a bit more than sometimes. Lol.

  • Jon

odd to see the Vita sell a lot more when the 3DS dominated the top 10.

    • Lil J Moore

Well most people already have the 3ds

    • Diaz

They count the 3ds and the xl as two different consoles. Combine their numbers.

    • Ducked

Handhelds will dominate Japan this gen.

  • Rich Garriques

this is simply why the should of released dark souls II on Wii u. i mean are they on crack. it would sell a lot.

    • jackie

When u think about it it might not sell much on wii u. Wii u owners are not even buying alot of software. This game would still dominate on other consoles just cuz nintendo still has that rep as the kiddie console. Nintendo needs to somehow get that rep to go away

      • Zuxs13

They are not buying a lot of software? The attachment rate is nearly 6:1 and that’s only after 15 months.

        • ETeach

I own 16 full-length games for the WiiU. That’s not counting virtual console and indie games. I may not be the majority, but yeah, there’s definitely people out there buying software.

        • jackie

Lol I never see a wii u game in the top 10. Not even donkey kong. It was only on there for like a week

          • Zuxs13

So your point is your visual assessment is better than statistical facts? Oh ok no wonder you haven’t got a clue.

    • Ducked

Why would people buy a Wii U to play a game they can play on a cheaper system?

    • Brandon

Just like the other 3rd party games on wii u that sold so much. No, this game would not have sold on wii u, would have had a much better chance on xbox or ps4.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Even the best third party games don’t sell on Wii U, this one would be no different. Plus, Dark Souls demographic are on PS3 and 360. Nintendo fans would rather have a Zelda game.

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

I don’t care anymore and just wait for Monster Hunter 4 to be released next year~

    • Ducked

      That’s on 3DS

      • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

        So what’s the problem ? D:

        • Ducked

Nothing I guess, great for us 3DS owners

  • Lil J Moore

Still waiting for some good Nintendo announcements

    • Ducked

“We have a new Metroid, F-Zero, and Star Fox coming soon!”

      *wakes up*

      Oh well.

    • ben

You will be waiting until after Mariokart is released.

  • Kenshin0011

I really hope bayonetta 2 pushes wii u sales

    • Lil J Moore

One game isn’t gonna cut it.

      • ETeach

No, but I’m starting to see a strategy. The more games the system gets, the more it chips away at the idea of not wanting the system. Maybe Mario Kart or Bayonetta isn’t enough by itself, but if you combine Monster Hunter, Bayonetta, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Zelda, Mario, etc, you start to get a collection of exclusives that will make the system “worth buying” for some of the nay-sayers out there.

        • konoyomi

Yes, releasing games on a system is certainly a good strategy -.-

          • ETeach

You’re oversimplifying it, mate. It’s not just releasing games, it’s release high-quality exclusives that will make people actually want to buy the system.

      • ben

I believe the wii u has far more than one game.

    • starwars360

Yeah maybe or not but Mario Kart 8 will boosts massive when game hits on 30th May. :)

      • ben

        29th, here in Japan.

    • Ducked

I doubt it, Monolith X and Shin Megami are what the system sellers in Japan will be. To bad they won’t be out until the end of this year at earliest

      • ben

The system seller is Mariokart. It is already selling out on preorder in Japan.

    • InterTreble

Surely it won’t be on PS4. I’m sorry for Nintendo haters. They can only dream this game and many others. What a poor and useless way of living…

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I have to ask Treble, what does that have to do with what Kenshin said? Is it that hard to stick to topic? I think it’s clearly obvious that it’s not coming to PS4. To be fair, I don’t think many PS4 gamers will care in the long run as other games will be around the corner. I have no problems with Bayonetta 2 being on Wii U exclusively. If anything, that’s good for Nintendo and wish the game good sales. Try to leave it at that. :P

      • oontz

I own a wiiu and a ps4 and I could care less about bayonetta 2.

  • ETeach

I’ve never been interested in Dark Souls, and I don’t really know why. It looked fun when my roommate played through it.

  • HydePark1980

“Nintendo should by this game, Nintendo should buy that game” As a developer why the hell would I expect Nintendo to chase me down to put a game on their system.

First an foremost, if you’re a developer and that’s the mentality you have in today’s industry – you’re goddamn idiot! If Nintendo fronts money on your game congrats, if not tough rocks.

Secondly as a developer if you can’t find the potential in creating a solid game on the Wii U that’s on you not them. It’s time gamers and developers grow up and pull up their underwear, stop blaming Nintendo for what others are doing. Nintendo spends enough time apologizing for their own mistakes they shouldn’t have to do it for the rest of the goddamn industry.

  • InterTreble

Wow! 3DS is #1 in only 3 weeks, again!! Is it the “fantastic” performance of the “next gen” in Japan?! Ahahahah! No games, no sales, there are no games in Top 10, it’s a real fail for PS4. Sony is enjoying a great marketing in USA and EU, clapping hands to them, but I’m about games, we are about games, not sales. I’m a gamer, not a Sony/Nintendo investor. And it’s still the same situation: PS4 has NO GAMES. Happy 400$ of furniture, if you love to waste your money! ;)

    • Brandon

You do realise the wii u is doing alot worst then the ps4, and not only in Japan.

      • InterTreble

I’m speaking about the fail of “next gen” consoles in Japan. If you mean Wii U is next gen, as it is definitely, I’m pleased. But for most people “next gen” is only PS4 and Xbox One. And they have been doomed by 3DS in just 3 weeks. This is what I said.

        • Brandon

Its not a waste of money when the games will be rolling out this year and the UI is much better then any console.

          • InterTreble

WILL be rolling… WILL… ok, so you are saying I’m right if I wait. At now PS4 is a piece of furniture. And the improvement of UI are so irrelevant that they definitely do not deserve 500 or more bucks! This is my opinion, and Japanese people’s, as it seems…

          • Brandon

Well the ps4 is $400, and it has games now that are still fun. Lots of people are enjoying the UI, because it adds new things like the share button, multitasking, and more. Its worth the $400 much more then the $300 for the wii u, but it all depends on the type of gamer you are.

          • InterTreble

In this case, I totally agree. I’m not that kind of player who call himself “hard core” only because he spends hours in multiplayer online shooting sessions, or even worse, because he pays 70 bucks every year just to update his soccer game’s rosters… Actually, the point is PS4 has no exclusive games. Trolls and haters have been saying that about Wii U for its first six mounths. Why are they making up their minds now? It is EXACLY the same situation. Too much fanboys, indeed… Now Wii U has too much great exclusive games to continue this unsuccessful fight, and they do not speak about “Wii U has no games” anymore. It would be stupid, and a perfect boomerang considering the NOTHING that can be played in exclusive with PS4 NOW. And let’s tell the truth, the improvement of UI are so irrelevant that they definitely do not deserve 500 or more bucks (consider the cost of online, second controller, etc. and the extra cost of “next gen” versions, which has nothing “next gen” but the price). The comparative videos are so funny how they try to make sense in such a wasting of money. “Look that pixel”, “Look the shadow of the drop of that NPC” Ahahahah! Too funny! You must be an eagle to reeeally appreciate! Ok, really, it’s fine for me. And I call this a real waste of money. This is my opinion, man, I don’t want to convince you. But it’s my opinion, I’ll repeat, and Japanese people’s, as it seems from the article… We are speaking about it.

          • Marcus Larsson

Everybody seems to forget that, multiplats on either xbone or ps4 is fantastic way to play.
And with cars that works we change all the time, why isnt it the same with Consoles?
A lot of people dont like Playing games on pc, and on pc there is no market if you want to sell the game after finishing it.
Same for the pc, wont be Worth shit in 5 years.
And its an investment and something special about getting a console early, just like when i got My wii u.
Even tho i have realized now that Nintendo isnt My thing anymore, dont like platform-games as much as i used too.

          • Brandon

Unlike the wii u, Ps4 doesnt need 1st parties to survive. It has many 3rd parties coming. Yes there on other platforms, but if you have a ps4, its best to get it for that. Im not one of those haters or trolls, I like nintendo, the only reason im going to buy a wii u is for the exclusives. Alot of nintendo fans see $400 as being to expensive, but its only $100 more then the wii u and you get a blu ray player(which people dont have, so this is a good bonus), and a console thats getting games with no long waits. Graphics is not everything, but its something that makes games more appealing. As a gamer Im happy that your enjoying wii u as much as Im enjoying my ps4, but dont bash on something if its not your type of game or console.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Pay no mind to him, bud. He’s always like this. ;P

    • matthew garcia

Lol hey I have a ps4 and I’m gonna enjoy infamous but I have a wii u also and will enjoy mario kart also to bad that’s not til may. The last release was donkey Kong in febuary. That’s a long time without a new game

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Far too long. Yet, PS4 has no games. I love the logic.

    • oontz

Um the wiiu is also a next gen system right? So you are actually bashing both with your statement. Not just a fail for the ps4 but also the wiiu right? I mean you can see the flaw in your logic right?

      • ben

The PS4 is going to do big numbers this week. MG5 demo has insured that. I do wonder about the motives of Konami, how much they were influenced by sony to out that training stage as a game?

It was really good business for both parties. As long as there is only a small amount of consumer backlash. Tomorrow will be interesting on Amazon Japan.

        • oontz

Fact is I don’t care about the systems… I own both and enjoy and use them every day. That is all that matters. However if Nintendo was to stop supporting the wiiu I’d be PISSED!

          • ben

They won’t, they have to much invested in it.

  • Jon Turner

PS4 is really dying in Japan; granted WiiU’s sales aren’t much better, but add 3DS + XL together and both have already outsold PS4. However much it sells it certainly won’t be toppling WiiU’s install base anytime soon.

    • jackie

It already toppled wii u install base globally. That is where it counts

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Exactly. That’s the bottom line here.

    • InterTreble

You totally got the point. Sony fanboys will never admit PS4 fail in Japan, and will always speak about anything else.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I think the word you’re looking for Treble, is struggling. It’s the same thing when Nintendo fanboys say that the Wii U isn’t failing. See how the double standards work here? I won’t say it’s doing awesome in Japan, cause it’s not. To be fair, neither Wii U or PS4 are doing that great. I expect PS4 to do better once games like KH3 release. Wii U sales should go up in time when better releases that appeal to Japanese gamers. Though, when looking at the bigger picture, Japan is big on handhelds, so it makes sense that hardware sales are small. Notice how even the Vita is doing fine in Japan, but sucks in other regions?

      • Jon Turner

Until PS4 gets its big hitters, I honestly don’t see it doing any better than WiiU did during its first year in Japan. It’s also important to remember that WiiU has something this year that I don’t really see from PS4 as of now. System movers. FFXV and KH3 won’t even be around for some time now. I doubt either will hit this year, TBH. With the release of both MK8 and SSB4, WiiU will skyrocket again. It’s also interesting that WiiU’s first four weeks already are bigger than what PS4 achieved so far.

        • InterTreble

Do not tell this to Daniel “Mr Worng” Gonsalessss or some other haters in this site, because otherwise you will be blacklisted!! Ahahah! Let’s leave them to their ignorance, they are really hopeless. We’d rather enjoy games, not hate and troll all the days. This is the good way of living this fantastistic world. Theirs is so stupid and so boring! ;)

      • oontz

So when will Nintendo fanboys admit wiiu is failing world wide?

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Well, Treble won’t anytime soon. That’s for sure.

  • Nintenjoe82
  • Squid

    Pokemon is still doing good.

    • Brandon

Hell yeah, pokemon is the main reason im buying the 3ds.

  • Matt

Hopefully Mario Kart 8 will change these figures around

  • readypembroke

Wow Nintendo is FINALLY getting beat by the Vita!

  • Pedro Gomez

It’s depressing how a game of DK Tropical Freeze’s quality gets outsold by an overrated piece of horseshit like Dark Souls II.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Your opinion and anger are noted. Many people love the game, just as there are people who love DKC TF. People can use the same logic and call DKC TF overrated.

    • matthew garcia

Dark souls is pretty good. U get your money’s worth with over 60 hours of game play and it’s more challenging then dk even though dk is pretty difficult itself

      • Pedro Gomez

I’m pretty sure Dark Souls 2 doesn’t have a third of the atmosphere on DKCTF…and I’m pretty sure the gameplay mechanics and the music are much more masterful and polished with Donkey Kong…

        • oontz

I am pretty sure that’s just an opinion.

        • ben

I want to agree with you, but you’re comparing apples with oranges.
Both games have their own qualities, and their own fans, some people like both.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

The fanboy act doesn’t hold up too well.

  • Guest

    “[PSV] Soul Sacrifice Delta” XD
    JAPAN HAS PS5 !

  • Andrew Longo

Nintendo do not know what they’re doing anymore. I say disappear for 3 years, and come back swinging with a super charged next-gen console, a PROPER mario, zelda and metroid game, full 3ds connectivity, no gamepad whatsoever, and focus on GAMES not gimmicks. their time in the sun with the wii is over, it was a fad that old people and mothers bought and only provided gamers with a handful of decent titles. it’s time to wake up and make up your mind, are you making a gaming console? or an interactive family board game

    • Pedro Gomez

Go fuck yourself with a ten-foot pole. Nintendo already released a Next-Gen console, it’s called Wii U. Super Mario 3D World’s the most proper Mario you’ll ever see, and if you don’t like it then you’ve got zero taste for games. And I wouldn’t want the Wii U without the amazing Gamepad, which IS NOT a gimmick, it streamlines the whole user interface and Pikmin 3 has shown us what can be done with it…so shut the fuck up!

      • matthew garcia

Lol chill out Pedro u seriously have issues if u take opinions about nintendo in that way. Sounds like u need to put mario down for a while and try to get laid

        • Pedro Gomez

The typical dudebro ‘get laid’ response, just priceless.

        • Chronicle X

          He will when you do.

    • Fierce-Deity Link

if they disappeared for 3 years the fanbase wouldn’t forgive them… you know, their core audience [the only ones buying the wii u for the most part]… so don’t give “advice” when you’d probably do a worse job than ninty is doing now ;)

a proper mario you say? well, they said a galaxy 3 is likely to be made.. just cause u didn’t like 3d world doesn’t mean it’s not a “proper” mario game.. i would like crossplatform connectivity, but ultimately there are few games that are both for the 3ds and wii u… so i don’t see why you are complaining about that.. unless u mean u want to that gamecube feature where u used ur gameboy…

gimmicks? hmm… thing is that nintendo likes to try new things.. their “gimmicks” are now pretty much the norm, i.e. adding shoulder pads, rumble feature, etc.

i’ll agree that more games needs to be released, but the gamepad clearly is something different to the gaming world [ i am aware other gamepad like controllers existed before but they diddn't work well].. if executed well we could have really interesting gaming experiences… the gamepad isn’t the problem.. it’s up to the developers to use it to it’s full potential…

  • ben

The important thing to understand with these figures is that Sony had a massive week for game releases.

  • Gary Ryckewaert

I am baffled by the low sales of the Wii U a bit. The console itself is fantastic in my opinion. Tech specs are irrelevant to me as long as the games look good, and there are some gorgeous games on the wii u. I love the gamepad and if all it is ever used for is to show HUD’s, maps, inventory and things like that I am fine with it. It is a console version of the DS. The tvii part is great and nintendo has come a long way with their online for this console. Mii verse is fun and addictive. The biggest problem is the trickle of new games, Nintendo needs to get with the program. They seem to be courting alot of indie developers which is great, but they need to hire, hire, hire more people to develop their flagship IP’s. It’s great that there are quite a few indie games in the pipeline, but if they can’t keep third party developers they need to go on a hiring spree so that they can get their games out quicker. They also need to invest in more new IP’s…..that is a huge detriment to nintendo that they don’t develop enough new ideas. Enough with all the mario stuff. Don’t get me wrong, nintendo makes great games, but they need new franchises. Stop spending time and money pedaling backwards. Why did they come out with the Wii mini and 2DS? They should have taken the money and time to invest in new games. Or put more people on the game development teams. They can’t get games out for their new systems because they do stupid stuff like the 2ds and mini wii. Why? Iwata seems to have his head so far up his own poop shoot that he wears it as a hat. The guy is in his own little world.

  • daeglyth

To be fair, Dark Souls 2 is one hell of a game. The souls series by From Software is hands down one of my favorite modern franchises.

  • PatcherStation

UK console prices, most won’t pay it, no matter what games are released. As a matter of fact, the Wii U would struggle at £199. £179 with a game, it might have a chance.
