Nintendo has enough cash in the bank to run a deficit for 38 years

nintendo-building-7

Failures have unfortunately become a staple of the gaming industry. In today’s world, all it takes is one AAA title failing to meet sales expectations and studios are shuttered, people are laid off, and beloved franchises are never heard from again. This is one reason why the game industry at large likes to focus on what works; Call of Duty and Battlefield annually make both Activision and Electronic Arts money hand over fist as gamers line up to continually buy the same thing.

It’s this attitude of gamers knowing that games have to be successful in order to prevail in today’s economy that turns many people to screaming about how doomed a company is because titles like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze have done well, but not as well as hoped. The difference here is that Nintendo does not operate like gamers expect game developers and game publishers in the West to operate. The company has always been fiscally conservative, but a recent article in the UK’s Nintendo Gamer magazine points out just how well Nintendo has managed to save money.

Buried in reams of financial data is the revelation that Nintendo have 812.8 billion Yen (£6.7/$10.5 billion) in the bank – enough for it to take a 20 billion Yen loss (£163/$257 million) every year until 2052. Then there’s almost 469 billion Yen (£3.8/$6.0 billion) held in premises, equipment and investments. When that runs out – we’re in the year 2075 by this point – they’ve got some of the most valuable intellectual property in gaming to sell off before the company goes out of business.

So yes, while the Wii U isn’t doing as well as Nintendo intended upon release and titles like Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze haven’t sold the numbers originally intended, Nintendo is far from failing as a company. Any one of those critical games failing could have spelled the end for a Western developer, but Nintendo doesn’t operate on the same business strategy as most of the gaming world.

And if they keep raking in dough…

  • McNally

    Well, then

  • abe

it wont but this should shut up the nintendo is doomed mentality

    • Ducked

Mentality, the new favorite word for Wii U Daily.

    • jjbredesen

Never understood why Nintendo is doomed, when Sony is close to bankrupt, and just about turned a profit this year, because of selling there PC devision and laying of employees, saving them 250 million dollars….

PS4 will need to sell like crazy every single year, before PS5 is launched, because if not, PS will be sold.

      • Dark-Link73

Actually what ultimately saved Sony was the Japanese government. As we know, Sony almost went broke with the HD-DVD/Bluray war. They invested so much money on BD that it almost drove them out of business. Sony is such an integral part of the Japanese economy (just as the big three auto makers in the US [Chrisler, Ford, GM]) that, just like the US government, the Japanese government felt Sony’s failure would deal a huge blow to their economy, so they bailed Sony out just like the US government bailed out the three big auto makers.

        • Jewelarchon

In actuality, the auto bailout was a loan, as well. The auto-makers already paid it back, with interest.

          • Dark-Link73

Thanks for pointing that out. I don’t know why I thought they were different.

        • jjbredesen

Yeah, but i think they would get some help, if they sold everything except from playstation, and anything that is acctually profitable for them… They could recover, but PS4’s price is to low, they loose to much money on it, once people have bought enough software they will get there money back, but there are no games right now…

          • matthew garcia

Actually Sony makes a 8 dollar profit on each ps4 sold. It cost Sony 392.00 dollars to make ps4

          • Mason742

You have to account for cost of marketing the product. E.g. under that logic Wii U wasn’t sold at a loss.

          • RazorRuss

Nintendo makes damn sure they see hardware sales that turn a profit. One year on the market slashing prices plays into the quiet hand of falling economies of scale and re-negotiated supplier contacts. Nintendo is looking forward to a surprised consumer market that in 2014, 2015 suddenly is pulled in to take a real look at the games and without having thought about it for years, be given no option but to buy on impulse. A consumer who isn’t pulled in by surprise is one who has a million reasons to walk away.

          • val berger

I guess Sony checked out what Nintendo did with the Wii and now tried that and succeeded. Nintendo checked Sonys PS3 out and …well we know how that went :P

          • RazorRuss

They learned to simmer down on the 12 core mania and 10 years viable talk that confused the publishing community and developers this time around. Sony is formidable and would always have my bet as the high end media center/gaming machine of choice to win in any c**** measuring contest.

          • shadus

Well that number doesn’t factor in shipping and the store cut so Sony loses money actually but not much. To be fair the Wii U loses much more per console sold and the PS3 lost over $200 a box each time it was sold at launch.

          • RazorRuss

Same issue all consoles faces in their freshman year. The advertisement driven blogs like IGN view this and say nothing for PS4, Microsoft, but of course jump on Nintendo when forced to write anything that it was a sign of failure. This generation of console wars will be different than all the others, but integration with existing hardware is behind the trend, the Wii U will be around for a solid 5-8 years and will serve as one piece of many new add on tech integration pieces that N, as well as Xbox and PS4 will sell to extend the hardware functionality and integration into our lives before the next generation of consoles hit.

          • jjbredesen

Yeah, i know that but PS4 needs to sell fantastic every year, if not Sony will go bankrupt before thenext generation, it looks really bad for them, i want them to do great, but they need some must have games soon or the hype will die, imfamous will sell consoles, and i am sure they have more planned, but if PS4 needs to sell almost double of what it sold now to keep sony in profit, every year, so close to 10M consoles a year.

      • darionnexus

I really appreciate that you do your research, I’ve been trying to tell this too people since the NGC, the console may not see critical mass but that doesn’t stop Nintendo, sure you remember N64 vs PS. Even if they only sell 55 million Wii U by next gen they still end up profitable, and nothing is going to stop the 3DS brand not yet at least. I love games, so when Sega crashed I was hurt, but you saw that one coming a mile away. It was as pain as seeing GM go bankrupt in one year. The only people close to falling into that trap are PS and Xbox, companies operate on gains not losses. Thanks for intelligent fact. Lol

        • jjbredesen

No problem, always try to make sure that i know what i am talking about, and actually have facts to support it.

Don’t want Sony to fail, but its sort of a nobrainer that they will, as for Xbox, Microsoft has so much money that i think they will survive for a lot longer, unless Microsoft starts to get in to problems, i think Xbox could have atleast anouther 3 generations, depending on how greedy M$ is.

          • Dark-Link73

M$ is, most likely, completely solvent on the windows brand alone. This whole XBOX venture (I remember reading) was just started in an attempt to drive the Playstation of the market, so even if the XBOX fails eventually, M$ as a company will continue to do business as usual. On the other hand, Sony doesn’t have that luxury.

They’ve been bleeding money since they lost their electronics market status in the early 90’s (in the 80’s Sony Walkman was to my generation as the iPod is to this generation). That’s why when Nintendo left their partnership in the early 90’s, inadvertently, the move became Sony’s salvation in the form of the original Playstation, where Sony has placed all their hopes ever since. If the Playstation ever fails, it’ll be the end of Sony as we know it.

          • jjbredesen

Agreed, since the early 2000s there stock has dropped almost 90% so no dought that PS is what Sony is resting on.

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

at some point, microsoft will start to lose market share in the OS market.

          • Dark-Link73

While your statement is rather ambiguous because Microsoft technically has already lost “market share in the OS market” with the advent of Chrome, Lixun, iOS; if you meant that M$ will loose market share to the point of collapse, then yeah, I agree with you. However, every company is bound to loose market share of their flag product to the point of collapsing. Unless they evolve.

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

            totally agree

          • Arthur Jarret

Hm, if Xbox remains to be a money-losing venture – the stockholders that actually control microsoft in the long run will demand the project to be halted or sold off.

Sony is likely to last longer, if only due to their strong IPs – which include movie franchises. Their electronics company may be losing money but their content production companies will be around for a long time.

I hope the company can last as-is, though: as they have always stood on the forefront of the creation of new media carriers – including but not limited to pioneering VCR with Betamax (until JVC took over with VHS), portable music with their walkman, CDs (in coorperation with Philips), DVDs (in cooperation with Philips, Toshiba and Panasonic) Bluray (in cooperation with Philips and Pioneer), translucent mirror cameras and more.

Outside developing the media carriers, they’ve been making the media to go with it for years (movie, music and games) – as well as pushing resolution and quality standards of each.

All Microsoft gave us since they arrived on the scene was paid-for-internet access, on-disc DLC, premium dashboard themes (which won’t work properly in a month after an update – and cannot be offered free even if the creator wants to give it away), Paid for digital items (avatar clothes), Force-feeding us non-gaming media, Ruining the experience by putting rewards on the screen for arbitrary gameplay achievements and generally letting other companies know that if they market it agressively enough… they can get away with it. I like a lot of their exclusives and the controller, though.

          • jjbredesen

Agreed! I don’t want Sony to go, and i have a lot of respect for them just pointing out, that if they don’t get there shit together they will have to sell almost everything to stay in business.

And yeay Microsoft just steals money, i am so sick of them that i have now moved to Ubuntu, Windows is now dead to me, after Windows 8 came out i sort of lost all respect for Micro$soft.

          • Arthur Jarret

Ah, windows 8. Reminds me of my previous apartment.

          • jjbredesen

LOL! So true, its not a new concept at all remember AOL?

            http://funny-pictures-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Windows-8-vs.-Aol.jpg

          • Fernando Garcia

Oh come on. At least Xbox Live is a good service for online play, and achievements are a good idea. Paying for digital items and clothing is an old idea, long before Microsoft did any of such. There’s also nothing wrong with non-gaming media; Sony came before when they announced the PS2 could play DVD’s, and was preceded by other CD consoles that played music CD’s.

As for on-disc DLC, was it really Microsoft that invented that?

    • Randall Hellmer

It would if this story wasn’t already two years old, using figures from even further back, and hadn’t already been debunked by reality before it was even posted.

      • elconrado

“…and hadn’t already been debunked by reality before it was even posted.”

        Right, sure, “debunked”.

Because they don’t hold 14.2 Billion Dollars in assets right now with zero debt, not including subsidiaries.

You are right though, the data is outdated, since they are in fact in a BETTER position today than two years ago in 2012.

        http://markets.ft.com/research//Markets/Tearsheets/Financials?s=7974:TYO&subview=BalanceSheet&period=a

        • Randall Hellmer

          Here are some real numbers:

          http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2013/130424e.pdf

Via Nintendo’s own earnings release last year. See category “Cash and deposits” on their balance sheet, which is the key statistic referred to in the article above. The value listed is 478 billion Yen, compared to 812 billion Yen in 2011. Do the math, and that represents a 41% decrease, exactly as I described.

The numbers back me up on this. The only only problem here is your attitude and failure to do proper research.

          • elconrado

I guess the error was expecting you could read and understand financial data.

See that little column that reads “Short-term investment securities”?

That’s money. As in “they have 8.8 billion dollars” money. When financial experts say they have “X amount of money”, they include this value.

            http://www.investopedia.com/terms/s/shorterminvestments.asp

Why? Because that’s how you gain more money off your savings. They had 13.5 billion dollars total in 2011.

If you wan’t to say they “spent 1/3rd of their cash reserves” between 2011 and 2012, go ahead and say that. They are still in the same financial position this old article states today as they were 2 years ago, which last I checked, was your complain.

          • Randall Hellmer

“They are still in the same financial position this old article states today as they were 2 years ago, which last I checked, was your complain.”

The article was posted two years ago in February of 2012, before Nintendo’s yearly earnings release. The figures in the article itself were from 2011, three years ago.

          • elconrado

Your main point is that the claims in the article were “debunked”; as in “they are financially very stable” “they can run without a net income for 35 years”.

Your claim of their losses doesn’t stand. They invested part of their savings on a new console between 2011 and 2012, but their savings have been stable for 3 years following that.

Well, turns out they ARE very stable financially, they REMAINED stable since 2011 even after investing on a new console, and they CAN sustain a 250 million dollar net loss for 35 years before having to sell a single asset.

            So:
            1) You were right the article is old.
            2) You are wrong about their liquid assets,
            3) Your claim they lost 40% of their cash in 2 years is false,
            4) You are wrong about them not being able to withstand the type of losses the article talks about.

            So what exactly was “debunked”?

          • Randall Hellmer

            2) The figure from the article which the “38 years” is based on was 812.8 billion Yen, which is equal to the “Cash and deposits” figure on Nintendo’s 2011 balance sheet. I used the same figure from the 2013 balance sheet for comparison because it was simpler.

            3) With that in mind, I pointed to the 40% net decrease in this figure between 2011 and 2013 (2 years) as proof that the author’s argument didn’t hold up under scrutiny.

            4) I never said this. This is simply a poor article that does a poor job of trying to prove a point.

          • elconrado

            2) You used the same figure because it fit your narrative. The original article made the same mistake you did now, and confused “Short-term investment securities” with actual Investment securities. If he hadn’t, he would have realized, like you should have, that the ACTUAL number of liquid assets in 2011 was 13.5 billion dollars.

            http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2012/annual1203e.pdf

Funnily though, his math still works out in his favor, as the ACTUAL liquid assets in 2012 were 958 billion yen, or 11.5 billion dollars.

Do while he used the wrong process, he reached the right conclusion.

            3) Except the “argument” still holds up. His figures were wrong, but the final conclusion was spot on. Which leads, again, to your argument.

            4) Moving the goalpost. You explicitly said the article was “debunked”. Rather than answer the actual question, you’re trying to do some revisionism.

You’ve been claiming that the point of this article is wrong all around this tread, waving that “40%” like it means something. Now, you’re trying to act like that wasn’t the point.

So, again, real simple: What was “debunked by reality”?

  • nin-10-doughfan

    ^,^!

  • Josiah Parsons

…Which means they can make about 6 more failed consoles! Woot!

    • Ducked

Yep, the Wii U, the Wii Z, the Wii Pii, the Wii C, the Wii E, and the Wii Wii!

      • Josiah Parsons

Honestly, if they get through this, they’re ditching the “Wii” title. For some reason, nobody confuses the different Gameboys or DSes, or the NES and Super NES.

      • Yeah right

Lol I feel so immature for laughing at the last name.

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

Not sure what to comment but… yay!

    • matthew garcia

Good now use all that money to create a console to destroy all others. No more of this weak stuff. Create bad ass commercials that get people’s adrenaline Goin instead of this Disney stuff. Use all that money for the most part to create more games that will release on a monthly basis. If u can’t get 3rd party support then invest to create your own sports games, shooter games, rpgs, adventure games. Also please don’t ever use the wii name ever again. It’s sounds stupid to me. If u name your next console super nintendo 2 and make it have the balls of a pc you will have the greatest console of all time on your hands

      • thedeciderU

Nintendo’s not dead. They’re just in rehab.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Just another step in Nintendo-evolution. They have done it before and came out successful and I am sure they will do it again. Plenty of video game companies will close their doors before Nintendo does.

      • Ryan F

I agree. They fell way behind the curve by putting off learning how to develop HD games. They’ve been off their marketing game and still haven’t 100% figured out how to leverage mobile and social media platforms to continuously build their own platform. But they still make awesome, beautiful, fun games. They are well on their way to getting their mojo back.

        • Sultan 7

Agreed↑↑↑…. but i think the HD troubles stemmed from the gpgpu architecture.

        • Tams80

They deliberately chose not to use HD with the Wii because at the time of development and release HD TVs were not common enough.

That said, it does seem they had trouble transitioning to HD development for the Wii U.

    • val berger

One thing that’s bugging me about Nintendo, especially from your perspective, they go rehab, getting clean, enjoy life and….well always ending up in rehab again. I guess if you got rich parents always getting everything covered you can mess around as much as you want. BUT NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE PAIN YOU CAUSE TO THE PEOPLE WHO LOVE YOU! Oh goddamn…. didn’t mean to … cry…

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

Nintendo has never been dommed, ’tis the Wii U, but haters skam can’t make the difference.

  • Sydney Ultrasyd

Hopefully that won’t happen if they bring the games !

  • Mario

And yet people are saying that this company is dommed why?

    • That guy who hates Spike

Not alot of people say they’re doomed. Alot of people are telling them to leave the console race.

      • Mario

        That’s even worse!

        • That guy who hates Spike

Why? Nintendo can do more with the PS4 and Xbox One. Is it really a bad thing if they drop the console race?

          • 504HotBoy

It’s a bad thing, because they may not have the same commitment and passion that they have as a First Party Developer. Sega became a 3rd Party developer and the quality in their games went down hill. You can tell they lost a lot of their passion in developing games. It would also feel awkward and lose that uniqueness of being exclusive and the home for that platform. Don’t think any of them should be 3rd party. I think if people want to play their games. Stop being cheap and buy the consoles those games are on.

  • Mario

And yet people are saying that this company is doomed why?

    • Magnus Eriksson

      Who said that?

      • Donaald

People like you who said they will go third party?

        • That guy who hates Spike

Nintendo going third party isn’t “doomed”. I consider it the end of a certain success phase, knowing that they have went 30 years of making consoles, and brushed through their competition. Ending that phase isn’t doom, or even failure.

          • Donaald

You’re right, that’s why Sega, Atari and Ouya went software only. Because they were so successful.

          • That guy who hates Spike

Sega and Atari did find success in small aspects and a following. The day they went software only wouldn’t be a day of failure, because they are making the logical decision to succeed more. And during those phases they gained respect, fans and made marks on the gaming industry

          • Yeah right

Atari filed for bankruptcy and Sega has been in more than one financial crisis. They didn’t succeed more.

          • That guy who hates Spike

Atari mastered the industry at one point, as Nintendo once had. That is in no way failure in my mind. To this day, Atari is founded as the Pioneers in the gaming industry, and the ones that popularized consoles.
SEGA has had bumpy roads, but considering they’re not afraid to spend $200 Million on Atlus, they’re probably financially confident.

          • Donaald

Yeah, that’s why Sonic games sell like crap (save for Sonic And Mario at the Olympics) compared to the 4-6 million units they did when they had their IPs in their own hardware, and that’s why Atari nowadays they do only MMOs because both companies gained so many fans.

        • Magnus Eriksson

You are very very very stupid. You know that?

          • Donaald

Says the fag who got exposed and butthurt. LMAO

          • Magnus Eriksson

exposed for what? That Wii U is failing? It is failing.

          • Donaald

So? That wasn’t the topic at hand. LMAO and I’m the stupid one.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            Yes you are :)

          • Donaald

Cool story, bro. But it needs more flip-flops.

    • Randall Hellmer

Because this article came out in 2012, and has no basis in reality today?

  • Magnus Eriksson

Lol, no one has ever said that Nintendo is doomed. Not even Michael Pachter. That doesnt change that everyone thinks Wii U is a failed product. Typical example of strawmans argument here.

    • David Trail

It’s only a year dude. Anything can happen!

      • Magnus Eriksson

Its not a year. It was launched november 18. 2012. Today it is march 17. 2014. Count the months.

        • David Trail

Whoo a couple of months, idiot!

          • Magnus Eriksson

Count the months and lets see who is the idiot.

          • David Trail

A console life cycle is five to seven years. Talk then dude!

          • Magnus Eriksson

Do you agree that you lied about how old the Wii U was? This we can agree on yes? Also we must agree that you are one of the guys claiming that Nintendo is the third biggest company in Japan? We must create some consensus here, and this should be two things both of us could agree on yes? That you lied on these two points.

    • tronic307

Even if Wii U winds up limping to the finish line, so what? In the end it will be home to some of the best Nintendo games of all time.

      • readypembroke

Could be another GameCube sadly. Poor selling console with very great exclusives.

    • JB

Well technically, if various analysts and such are calling for Nintendo to extend their reach to mobile games or the never ending push to publish their games on the competition’s platform, then that, in a way, is saying Nintendo itself is doomed. Well at least on the hardware front.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Nah, thats the opposite of doomed. Keeping on to a formula that doesnt work – thats doomed

    • Carlos Coronado

Probably won’t be as a fail product as the Vita.

      • Magnus Eriksson

Meh, Vita sells better than Wii U.

  • Matt

    Very true Ashley.
I’ve been doing a lot of research on Nintendo as a company itself.
They are currently the third largest company in japan with no debt.
I think Sony fan boys should be more worried about Sony, as they’re in a $15 billion debt and are very close to selling the Playstation brand unless their products start selling.

    • matthew garcia

Well we all know the play station 4 is selling like crazy right now. If Sony were to sell it I bet apple would buy it and would make loads of money off of it.

Playstation is a powerful brand name. It is whether Sony can afford to run it.

        • matthew garcia

          Yeah its gonna be tough

      • tronic307

Microsoft is more likely to sell their Xbox division than that happening.

      • D.M.T

I wouldnt say PS4 is selling “like crazy” but it is selling really well. I think Apple or any other company would ruin the PlayStation brand.

        • crocodileman94

Compared to WiiU and XBone, it’s selling like crazy.

        • matthew garcia

Apple could take a piece of shit off the ground and write I pod on it and it will sale lol. Consoles are becoming more of a western thing now and apple is american. Apple would do it just to give Microsoft the middle finger.

        • jjbredesen

Apple can’t make a console period, i will not use itunes, never! Of course if they fixed it, i would but right now it sucks. And i am not going to pay for a song when i can listen to it for free on spotify etc.

          • Wighead

Not only that, the price of the PS4 would have be 600$ to be in line with their other overpriced products, but probably people would stiil be waiting in line for another box with the apple logo on it as it seem enough to sell anything at any price…

          • CoolStory

Ye, don’t pay for it musicians don’t need money they will make some on live right. You buy on itunes not for listening but for supporting musicians .

          • jjbredesen

Spotify gives them money through ads, and if you look at how many more people use spotify i think they make more than Itunes ;) I support musicians, but i am not going to buy every album just to find a good song, i support those that pass me “quality” test lol, i am very fussy about music.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Bullshiiiit… not even at their peak Nintendo was close to the top ten list.

      • Matt

If you read my post properly I said the third largest company in Japan, not the entire world.
If you don’t believe me look it up and try to prove otherwise rather than acting like a dickhead.

        • Magnus Eriksson

          I said Japan too.

          • Matt

Nintendo at there peak was in 2008. They had a market value of $80 billion.
Which is roughly one third of Microsoft.
They were in the top ten of the world then.

          • Daniel

Don’t try reasoning with him, it’s a waste of time.

          • tom

            I concur

          • Magnus Eriksson

But you are a bunch of liars. Prove your statements instead of bullshitting.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            You said third.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Show some facts. I want to see stats saying that Nintendo is the third biggest company in Japan. It should be very easy thing to do if its true. Sad thing its not, and you are a liar :)

          • Magnus Eriksson

ARE YOU FUCKING STUPID??? Do you really think Nintendo have ever been on the top ten companies in the world. HAHAHAHAHAHA! That was the best thing I ever heard. Nintendo is a fucking kiosk compared to the largest/biggest/richest companies in the world.

          • John Nolen

Nintendo #1 in japan in the video game business and sony #6 in the video game business wiiu outsaling the ps4 in japan

          • Magnus Eriksson

Videogame bussiness is another thing. Different story bro.

      • WIIU305

You must have Tourettes huh. You for the most part just shout out some of the most idiotic comments ever without nothing behind it.

        • D.M.T

          Very true!

          • Magnus Eriksson

So, I guess you can prove this DMT? Or are you just throwing yourself on the bullshit wagon as usual?

          • val berger

needless to talk to that dronebot as he just automatically agrees and disagrees as soon as some keywords occur. answering spammails is less waste of time =)

          • D.M.T

Hey coward, if you have something to say to me then hit that reply button and say it directly to me. Don’t talk shit behind my back. Dronebot? Says the Magnus Eriksson cocksucker.

          • val berger

Are you insane, bub? Are you really that simple minded and completely unable to make proper conversation? How comes fanboys can’t write a sentence without calling anyone critizising them some idiot, fag, cocksucker, whaaaatever? This is really who you are, right? In this case I got good news for you: The admins of this boards care shit about how people verbally attack others, so just keep it coming, I can’t hold you back. But you may explain to me how posting something 2 posts under yours is ‘behind my back’ that one really got me laughing. I’m really looking forward reading something with consistence from you, but I guess I could preach for world peace instead.

What I somehow like about you though is how stupidly aggressive you get as soon as you notice anyone saying anything against you. Like you were completely crazy on acid or something. You miiiight not stop others from telling shit ‘behind your back’ with that behavior, but it somehow makes you some amusing and worthy addition to that community. Most other fanboys are kinda boring somehow.

Maybe you’ll gimme your number, we could hang out one day and I could hug you a bit? cause in my superhomo-fantasy you’re this beary type of a hill billy. big and …SOFT.

        • Magnus Eriksson

Care to prove me wrong? Where is stats showing that Nintendo is the third biggest company in Japan? Lets see it, or I call it bullshit.

          • WIIU305

Why should I Google just for you. You are a big boy, I believe you should of been taught that in school. But why argue with a Tourette’s person, makes no sense.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            So prove it.

          • val berger

why can’t you just prove it or admit that you got no clue at all? I guess you owe that to all those blind upvoters of yours. you cruel person, how can you just play with those feelings and let them live a lie??? I HATE YOU!

so and now show us something that determines what you wanna make us believe. why should we be the ones who have to google it, kiddo? can’t google everything you claim.

          • WIIU305

First of all napoleon complex get off of magnus ass so you can see the light, then second of all kiddo you can hate me all you like but do the research yourself. Get out of under the bridge because your parents kicked you out of the basement and investigate yourself. If you can actually read you can see I never posted anything of figures. But because you are ignorant here are some websites that you and your butt buddy magnus can enjoy:

            http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/7974:JP

            http://quotes.wsj.com/JP/7974

If you have problems understanding this, then Google :)

          • Magnus Eriksson

That does not qualify for proof you liar :D

          • WIIU305

You are just like your picture huh? Anyways I can’t feed you no more so just read the articles and learn. Go back to school if need be.

          • val berger

Is there any reason to talk to me like that? Flagged you, babyboy. Why didn’t you post your attempt to determine your bullshit earlier? Why are you actually offending everyone who dares to question you? Why should I INSTANTLY google anything a little kid posts in a fanboyboard? Isn’t that your job to act credible? Of course it is and credible, you are not. Thanks for wasting my time and THANKS for actually posting ANYTHING. And actually I mean that. Not like stocks really mean too much, but of course you already know that. But actually after more than 24hours you somehow managed to at least post links to Nintendos Stocks. If you now grow up and start acting like a real person, sooner or later people will stop making fun of you but for now, have fun with your flag.

          • WIIU305

Wow and like if your post mean anything. Just like I tell your boyfriend magnus, burgerking go get a life. You post nothing credible ANYTIME you post something. So thank you for wasting my time to type to your lonely kid existence. So babygirl you been flagged as well so don’t feel lonely. You are just another troll that write garbage.

          • val berger

yaaaawn, I really expected something better in return, seems like you’ve run out of ideas, well, time to go to bed, see you and have fun explaining to the almighty flaggerator why you really flagged me. Oh of course, because critizising mindless fanboys is more illegal here than verbally attacking other users like you do as soon as anyone is questioning your actions. tell your mum she shouldn’t give you chocolate at such a late time, I know it as a father, it drives kids just insane and you’re the best proof. So farewell young one.
by the way, you’re invited to check out my upvotes-ratio, you might learn something about how credible my stuff is ;D

          • WIIU305

Ok gramps, make sure you take your meds and tuck in your blow up dolls. Sorry for taking you to understand stocks, forgot you are the idiot. So go hate yourself or whatever you and your butt buddies do and good night loser.

          • val berger

Your language is really that limited isn’t it? I really hope you grow out of that, otherwise your life will be too. Have a great life but please learn to handle critique and try to use your brain over your mouth, this lesson can come handy some times. Had to flag you again, as you don’t seem to know how to make conversation, but as the admins here ain’t give a shit about people calling each others idiots and buttfu*kers, you may have nothing to fear anyways, still would be nice if you try to calm down once in a while, you easily get banned for stuff like that on more mature places. You can now swear and yell whatever you want, I guess I don’t have to waste more words on you, because in this case, my postings would finally truly lose any reason. Farewell.

          • WIIU305

Why should I read this thing you post. I wasted my time with you and your boyfriends so shut up Meg and next time post something people like to read not bullshit. Also add some proof to it little kid. You can eat your chocolate now and go to bed little one. Nite bugerking.

          • Marcus Larsson

            They are telling you bullshit

          • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah I know. They live in a bubble. Kind of tragic.

      • shanafan

        Care to back that up?

        • Magnus Eriksson

No, your friend who said it was the third biggest company can do so. The burden of proof is on him.

          • Matt

Yeah. It’s called forbes magazine. Maybe you should read it rather than listwn to critics

          • Marcus Larsson

            Haha butthurt from the truth?
You did google it didn’t you, idiot?
Didn’t know disqus allowed idiot, but I guess i can call you a idiot how much I want.
Oh the whole “your boyfriend”-talk, sounds real mature.
I bet you’re fifteen years old and live with your mom…

Still irrelevant tho, you were wrong and Nintendo ain’t even in the top 15

          • WIIU305

Not really 14 year old. But if you want to think you won something then go to your butt pirate friends houses and share the glory. I never mentioned anything other than post. But since you are your boyfriends keep assuming I did, whatever. So idiot since discus lets morons like you join with your friends burgerking and Tourettes, then I should stop doing work for you losers.

          • Magnus Eriksson

            So prove it then.

          • Matt

Nintendo has a third operation in Tokyo, Japan, where research and development, manufacturing, and clerical work are conducted. All three offices are interconnected and have video conferences often for communication and presentation purposes.

This is copied word for word in the Forbes magazine that I own.
it also a fact that they own the Seattle Mariners along with a lot of other investments.
I don’t give 2 shits if you don’t believe me. I’m not wasting my time with you anymore.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Not good enough. The only thing you have proven now is that you are a liar.

          • WIIU305

Look what Google can do for you, little girl.

          • Magnus Eriksson

ROFLMAO. You found an article from 2008 stating something totally different than you and your friends here lied about. I want proof of this statement; “They are currently the third largest company in japan with no debt.”

            And thats fucking bullshit.

          • WIIU305

He did mention 2008 if you can read what the other guy mentioned. Tourette’s like I said I am done. I proven my points and you have not one point yet marked. You asked for proof and yet you provide none so you and your butt pirate buddies can enjoy each other now.

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

just take a pic of the magazine and that’s it

          • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, for example. Good idea Matt. Do this.

      • Wighead

Yeah, but your on my top ten trolling list of all time ;)

        • Magnus Eriksson

Come on, prove your statements instead. Or are you lying? :)

        • Daniel Gonzalez

          you’re*

      • Sultan 7

ignorance…. when they cut their sales projections the nikkei markets took a hit.

  • David Trail

In other words. Sony are more likely to go bust than Nintendo!

    • matthew garcia

Sony can’t sell tvs, dvd players, and stereos for shit. Still play station 4 is selling extremely well no denying that

      • David Trail

It can all go down hill. The hype is fading.

        • matthew garcia

Hype always disappeares no matter what. Ps4 will sell well throughout its life. Games are just gonna keep coming. Developers will always jump on board when they see console sales numbers like that

          • David Trail

Game what games? They look better on pc and I can play them on Xbox One. Infamous doesn’t appeal to me than say aa new Halo

          • matthew garcia

Doesn’t matter what they look better on those games are still selling best on ps4. Also doesn’t matter if u like infamous it’s gonna sell millions. You have to remember u are the minority.

          • David Trail

            Halo is bigger than Infamous.

          • matthew garcia

It is bigger then infamous but ps4 still has more exclusives then xbox. All they have really is halo forza and gears of war that is truly exclusive. Doesn’t matter ps4 is selling way better as a overall gaming system

          • David Trail

And has the worst games. For the gamers lol!

          • matthew garcia

Lol like I said before u are the minority. I like Sony games just like I like nintendo and xbox1 games. I’m a gamer in general

          • classicgamer20

No no no your doing it all wrong you have to swear your undying allegiance to one video game company and bash all of the other ones. Bah theres no such thing as a general gamer.

          • matthew garcia

Lol love your user name. I like retro gaming alot also. Just beat Chrono cross about a month back. Pretty good game

          • classicgamer20

Thanks Chrono Trigger is a great though I haven’t played the semi sequels yet but I probably should.

          • matthew garcia

Chrono trigger is better but Chrono cross is still a great game

          • InsaneZucchini

Millions? Sounds like you’re reaching, Infamous only sold around 2.73
mil and Infamous 2 only sold around 1.65 mil. It’s a great game and I
like the series, plan on getting Infamous Second Son, but no, I don’t imagine it’s gonna be selling /millions/.

          • matthew garcia

Ps4 is in way more demand then ps3 ever was. This game has more hype then the previous games. If a mediocre game like killzone shadow fall already sold over 2 million in 3 months infamous will do a lot more

          • InsaneZucchini

Killzone Shadow Fall was a launch title and as mediocre it is it was one of the best options available. It was one of only two exclusive titles available at retail. With the PS4 selling over 6 million units and only having 1 decent exclusive available, until now anyway, you should hope it has an attach rate of at least 1:3. Otherwise what are they even buying.

          • matthew garcia

Right now I’m playing Metal gear solid on ps4 and it’s amazing. On xbox 1 I’m enjoying the he’ll out of titanfall and really enjoying ray man on wii u

          • 504HotBoy

It will sell a lot for the simple fact, that it’s a highly anticipated game for the PS4 and there currently aren’t too many games on the PS4. I have my copy already on pre-order and will pick it up Friday.

      • tronic307

Sony needs to sell more good, cheap TVs like Vizio. Their high end TVs are fantastic, though.

        • matthew garcia

          Yeah there just overpriced

        • MerryBlind .

They’re the best TVs for gaming.

          • CoolStory

Best input lag on the market.

          • MerryBlind .

And best Motion Enhancement technologies too.

      • Carlos Coronado

But the problem is that the ps4 has to drag the Fails of the
Vita. Like the 3ds is covering the Wii U right now I think that after this year line up the Wii U sales my get more stable not sure do.

        • matthew garcia

True but I don’t think vita was as massively produced as wii u. They shipped a crap load of wii u ‘ s thinking it would have the same success as the original wii. Sony produced low to begin with based off of pop sales. Wii u took the bigger hit then vita

      • readypembroke

Don’t forget computers also. They are going to auction off their Vaio PC brand off sometime in the near future.

        • matthew garcia

True but pc in general is doing bad. Windows 8 is doing bad. This is all thanks to tablets

          • readypembroke

MS screwed themselves with Win 8 and their attempt to try to convince people to move from XP to 8 which isn’t working.

          • MerryBlind .

Not in general. Gaming PC is growing and strengthening every day.

          • matthew garcia

True pc gaming is growing. Most people don’t get a pc for gaming though and common folk who use pc’s have shrunk alot. Apple has really stuck it to Microsoft in many ways. Every product Microsoft tries to compete with apple on it loses

          • MerryBlind .

            Indeed.

      • MerryBlind .

Their recent TV line-ups have been pretty interesting though. They’re basically THE best TVs for gaming. Look up their “Impulse” Motionflow technology, it makes the image much more fluid, almost like an old CRT, without any crappy artifacts or lag.

Ever since I read about them, I wish I was playing on one every time I play DKC Tropical Freeze.

        • matthew garcia

Yeah I’m gonna look into that. I remember watching some demos of a Sony tv with a ps3 and it looked great

  • Ducked

Since Nintendo has this much money, they should make a GameCube 2 to replace the Wii U.

    • David Trail

No they shouldn’t the Wii U is awesome!

    • MerryBlind .

Except the Wii U practically IS a GameCube 2….

      • Ducked

No its not shaped like a Cube. If the Wii U was shaped like a cube, then I bet the Wii U would be the best selling video game console of all time.

        • tronic307

The motherboard has a similar layout, they just made the drive a front loader and put it in front, instead of on top of the heatsink.

          • C4

Yep, although without the ports on the bottom the GC would have around 3 cm less height…

        • InsaneZucchini

If shape matters, what they really need to make is the GameSphere.

        • MerryBlind .

Indeed, but if the shape of the console is what matters the most to you, then there is something wrong with you lol. I was saying that in terms of games and overall ‘feeling’ of the console, the WiiU is much more like the GameCube than the Wii was.

Although I have to say, I don’t understand why the ‘cube’ form factor isn’t more popular. Not only is it stylish, but it’s also efficient in terms of space management for computer hardware. My PC for example is almost a cube, and that’s because it was the smallest case I could find that could fit a real GPU.

          • C4

Well, it takes less space placed vertically for example. Even with the stand feet the Wii U roughly takes ~7 cm in width. Far as I remember the Wii was even a bit narrower.

    • tronic307

It’s GameCube THREE! Now we just need GameCube on the VC.

    • Wolfgem

No. That’s the SEGA way and they will lose consumer trust. Stick with the Wii U.

  • http://www.captincomics.webs.com CaptinnDaGameMaster!

Here’s the damn proof you trolls/Nintendo haters, now stop with all the doom and gloom cause I’m sick of it.

    • David Trail

      Wii U will prevail!

      • http://www.captincomics.webs.com CaptinnDaGameMaster!

HURRAY! And TAKE THAT, Nintendo trolls!

      • D.M.T

You bet your ass it will!!!

    • matthew garcia

I don’t think nintendo is doomed not even close. I just think wii u is suffering

      • D.M.T

I agree 200%. The word that best describes Wii U current situation is ‘suffering’ and not ‘failure’.

    • Ducked

      • val berger

Nintendo should add something like ‘Nintendo – doomed since 1996′

      • Fernando Garcia

        The ‘m’ looks hideous.

    • Randall Hellmer

Figures quoted are from 2011, before Nintendo even started taking losses.

      This whole article is nonsense.

  • Donaald

    A cry to deaf ears…

  • Suraj Alexander

Join the nintendo movement. help make the wii u better.

  • Andrew

No one will ever reference this article when writing their daily Nintendo is DOOOOMMEDD articles.

I mean they would make money each year if they only did mobile. I say this only because I think that is what they are going to do. And I’d probably be OK with it.

  • FilipiCn

Ubisoft brazilian division postes in his facebok: “what is The next gen console do you want play our games, ps4 or xbone?” So, a lot of of people, including me said: -Wii U!
Even in brazil Nintendo has a lot of fans. But is a poor thing that Wii u does not have anymore games like FIFA, because here in brazil it is a system seller. I dont care about football and f%k#ng EA, but most people do.

    • Fernando Garcia

Why don’t you care about football?

      • FilipiCn

Because football(soccer in USA) video games are always The same game with graphics improvements. And about the sport football, It don’t really shake me up.

        • Fernando Garcia

That actually isn’t true. The newest FIFA games come with updated rosters and new features that make the game at least a bit of a different experience from the previous one.

I say your problem with soccer/football and FIFA has more to do with you than the games themselves.

          • FilipiCn

Yes for sure. As I said, Wii U need games like FIFA, because here in Brazil almost everybody like it.

  • JB

Well for everyone wondering why Nintendo is so lax when it comes to their sagging hardware sales, while bold enough to say “Eff it” and work and experiment on brand new ventures like QoL, this is why. Nintendo knows they are sitting pretty. I suppose you can’t run a successful business for 30 years and not have amassed some major coin.

Hopefully they will wake up and use some of this coin to try and help their home hardware business out of the hole it’s dug…

  • dude

Am I the only one who thinks that obviously Nintendo isn’t doomed, and can fly fine on years of losing money, but IS THE GAMER conciously able to keep running on Nintendo hardware losing out on big games?

  • David Trail

Too all people going on about multiplats. All have been mediocre so far. Wii U has the best games!

    • matthew garcia

Wii u has been out over a year longer then the competition. Time will tell which console will have the best games. Every gen since n64 and ps1 I have owned all the big consoles. I have all 3 current gen consoles so it doesn’t matter to me. Gaming is a hobby for me. I’m no fanboy

      • David Trail

        Zombi U 77% > Killzone only 73% launch titles

        • matthew garcia

Lol I don’t care about metacritic scores. There critics who hated the rock band led zeppelin and there still my favorite rock band of all time. I don’t care for critics. Like I said I own all 3 current gen consoles and I’m not limited like u. No way could I just play wii u games

          • oontz

Myself got my PS4 and Wii U to play on and im happy

  • wiimenonowiiu

I do not see the wii u for the next 5 years on the market unless mk8 and smash bros and the new zelda get this system to sell i see a new system in 2 to 3 years if the wii u does not start selling

  • sharlo galmo

Sony sells building’s, and fire peeps. Nintendo make building’s, and hire peeps, but you still hear that Nintendo id doomed and not Sony. This is old news, a person with brains now that Nintendo is far from doomed. Nintendo is gonna dominated like always, but they need time.

I have a xbone, and have playo the ps4 by a friend, it is so funny that people thinking that those consoles are waaay better. At this point I like the wiiu more then mine xbone, and the graphics are not that great, the wiiu is gonna kick ass, ps4 is over hyped…..

  • tom

Thats great news. I believe in the long run the Wii U will return to profitability for Nintendo!

    • oontz

News is something that is new. The article Ashley has sourced was written in June of 2012.

  • Kenny Mathews

Thank you for sharing this Ashley

    OLD NEWS!

Lol, the date of the article it leads to is 2012. Also, about this “recent” issue of the UK magazine “Nintendo Gamer”, I used to read it. I say “used to” because they stopped production of it A YEAR AND A HALF AGO. I can also say that quote was taken from an issue that was published in Febrary of 2012.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

Thank you for the obvious, Ashley. Now tell us something we don’t know? Then it would be news.

    • jjbredesen

There is nothing wrong with an editorial, this one makes a lot of sense, and will help shut up the kiddie haters, saying Nintendo is doomed, Wii U is not doing that well, but it does not mean that Nintendo is dead ;)

      • Daniel Gonzalez

It was pointless if it was to shut up kiddie haters. Lol. No matter how many articles like this exist, Nintendo is still doomed. I think most of the world knows Nintendo is fine and Wii U is struggling and facing possible failure. Articles like this, only fuel the problem more, and you know that. It’s too easy to mock. ;P

        • Carlos Coronado

Then Sony is doom because of the Vita but nobody seems to
say that. The thing is that every time there is bad news for Nintendo everyone seems to say that they are going to die, but nobody says that Sony is going to die and they been very bad news for Sony as a company lately.

          • Marcus Larsson

You are saying it is not bad news for Sony when it is bad news for Sony? What?
Of course it is, you just wanna read what you wanna read i guess.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Sony has been doing better of late, so not too much bad news there. The reason why there are so many Nintendo doom articles, is because fans and fanboys alone are easy to irritate and can’t help but go to those articles and leave their hate posts. It makes them money and increases traffic. It’s the easy fact that Nintendo fans are easy to pick on and it shows all over the internet. Even I find this hilarious.

          • Rinslowe

Sony has been doing flippin disastrous of late mate…
            Talking about fanboy goggles, lol.

Only thing they had going for them in the fiscal year despite so many established divisions, was leveraging assets…

I’m a total fan of both Nintendo and Sony. But best to be squared off with reality…

        • Carlos Coronado

Then sony must be Doom because of the Vita nobody seem to
say nothing about that. Just because there are bad news from Nintendo everyone jump to the conclusion that is doom but there has been more bad news about sony and nobody say that they are doom.

  • Nintenjoe82

I’m glad they’re secure enough for a good few more consoles but it does annoy me that they could easily compete on a hardware level but are too frightened of another N64/Gamecube. Take a risk next time and if it doesn’t pay off, go back to the weak and cheap tech.

  • greengecko007

Nintendo is far from doomed, but having a lot of money doesn’t mean you can just coast through the business world. Nintendo needs to realize spending money is just as good of an investment as saving money. While the Wii U most likely won’t hurt Nintendo very much in the long run (if at all), continuing down this path of producing super niche consoles isn’t going to bring Nintendo a profit, and handhelds alone cannot carry the company. They may have enough money to run deficit for 38 years, but any sensible company would cut their losses long before then.

  • BIG Franky

twice in this piece DKCTF was mentioned as a failure of sorts… tough to call it a failure already, yes? I keep seeing that people are referring to the 130,000 copies it sold in “8 days” reference… lost in much of these reports is the fact that the NPD Data sourced was pulled prior to month end… so the 130,000 copies (for a game released on Feb 21) more likely came from data through Feb 25… if you read the fine print of the actual report you will see this. that confirmed number of copies came from more likely 3 or 4 days of sales than the 8 we keep hearing about.

  • Assassinated23

Nintendo might be pretty safe from bankruptcy, but the WiiU console is in grave danger of failing. It is still possible to save it, but not by continuing the way they have been thus far.

  • Trirulian

I think some people are still missing the fact that they are not selling well, I’m so happy and relieved that Nintendo isn’t going anywhere, I love them to death. But I won’t just mindlessly sit here thinking everything is cool. The Wii U isn’t selling well and their games are doing even worse, ESPECIALLY 3rd party games. The important ones. I know I sound harsh but I think that nintendo needs to work really hard on their next console so that we can get the awesome games that are on other platforms. But for now I’m cool with them almost completely having monster hunter on their console alone.

  • WarioForever

According to some people, Wii U is failed, but in my opinion, it’s just getting started to sell.

    • MerryBlind .

Me too. Remember how badly the PS3 was doing in its first 2 years compared to the 360? Yet it still managed to gain tremendous momentum and sold more than the 360 in the long run. People seem to have forgotten about that.

I believe the same will happen with the Wii U. Holidays 2014 will definitely be quite interesting for all 3 consoles, but especially the Wii U!

  • GregoryTheRainMaker

    Yup.

  • Quicksilver88

I have been a gamer since the very beginning of gaming and I actually believe all the conditions are ripe for another crash. Except this will be primarily a console crash as mobile will keep clicking along. Nintendo will survuve and rise from the ashes. Nintendo is actually doing a lot to ensure a future that many don’t recognize. Xbone sales are already lagging and I doubt Titanfall is going to push that many new units. PS4 had a good launch week in japan, but then fell off super hard in the following weeks. Aready key games have been pushed back to 2015 and most of what you can play this year is out on ps360. If the WiiU gets only MK8,SSB,B2,and X this year then that will be more of meaning than the HD twins are getting.

  • DragonSilths

Nintendo is indeed doomed in the short run. They refuse to learn from their mistakes. By no means will Nintendo simply go bankrupt. But Nintendo is in a place where they have so much money they can continue to fuck up for years and years and still refuse to change which is a bad thing. Honestly I hope Nintendo ends up in the red with the Wii U in the end of the gen. Maybe then they can see they royally fucked up and will go back to listening to their damn fans…if they have any left.

    • Brandon Olson

And what, create brodude consoles that focus on the graphics? That’s what’s been pulling in 3rd party devs to PS4 and Xbox One. That and people don’t wanna try and develope for the Gamepad’s style of playing. Nintendo’s the only one innovating, IMO. All PS4 and Xbox One are doing are vamping up the graphics while giving out some solid titles on the way. And any innovation that’s coming is inspired by Nintendo anyways. Smartglass gameplay? Dual screen options utlizing things like the Vita or a smart phone with certain games? Can we say DS/3DS/Wii U Gamepad anyone?

Why would you HOPE that Nintendo fails? That’s just being a jerk. With all the games I’ve got for the Wii U (and the games I’ll evidently be picking up from PS4 and eventually Xbox One when the games are finally here), I think the three big are doing a good job at listening to their fans when it comes to busting out some kickass titles.

If you don’t see that, I’m sorry but you just sound spoiled.

      • oontz

“any innovation that’s coming is inspired by Nintendo anyways.”

Not exactly. In your opinion maybe but your opinion is wrong.

      • DragonSilths

Your missing key information with me. I DO NOT LIKE ANY OF THE 3 RIGHT NOW. The Gaming Industry is shit right now. Honestly I want a Canadian ONLY video game console. Especially since Sony fucked Canadian gamers over by making the PS4 $450 and PS4 games $70 from now on. I wasn’t even talking about them but whatever. I don’t mean Nintendo should make an UBER POWERFUL CONSOLE. I mean Nintendo should do Party Chat, they should NOT do social networking bullshit like Miiverse which is so god damn broken, I mean they should GIVE MARIO A FUCKING BREAK do Starfox, F-Zero, Custom Robo, HELL A FUCKING ICE CLIMBERS GAME!!! Nintendo can still innovate that’s fine. But Nintendo ignores their fans and only gives a fuck about being the internet police and protecting the kids that they think are still innocent. News flash kids are NOT innocent anymore. Nintendo needs to LISTEN to their core fans, the ones who made them a global juggernaut but nowadays the ignore us and simply give out more and more and more Mario.

        • Fernando Garcia

Mario sells. So does stuff like Call of Duty, FIFA, Madden, Halo, and God of War. Why would they stop doing that?

          • DragonSilths

Mario has been going down in sales numbers since Galaxy 2. And at one time Nintendo had brains, honour and respect for their fans instead of jumping on the milk band wagon.

  • blasterman

Where the hell did they get this 10.5 billion cash figure? It’s
old. They have 8.6 billion and they’re about to spend 1.2 billion on
stock buybacks. That does nothing for their underlying business and
burns through cash just to buy up shares and make investors happy. That
will leave them with around 7.4 billion after. That’s 70% of the amount
that the author claimed they had.
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2014/01/29/nintendo-ceo-wii-u-isnt-in-good-shape-plans-1-2b-stock-buyback/

Year over year losses tend to increase, not stay flat. Failing companies fail because they can’t compete. The cash buys them time but that time isn’t as long as you’d expect. Zombie companies can go years with losses while burning through their cash on hand but that doesn’t mean that the losses are steady, they increase as the company’s product becomes less and less popular and they can’t cut costs. Perfect example.

  • David Trail

Even if the Wii U fails. 3DS is beating everything and Nintendo has enough money for 38 years. Bring me games like DKC TF, Pikmin 3, SM3DW, Zelda Wind Waker HD, NSMBU/ New Luigi Bros U and Wonderful 101 etc. I’ll be happy…

    Long live Nintendo!!!!!

    • oontz

The information presented in this article is not correct. Do some research on your own. Don’t just blindly accept this article as truth.

  • Brandon

I love all companies and dont see neither of the companies failing with there divisions, but if one of them go down the other two should buy them. If both xbox and ps4 go away and nintendo buys them, well they better not pull another wii u.

  • HydePark1980

Not bad for a company that most gamers think should go 3rd party. Today’s lesson, Nintendo keep doing what you’re doing and you’ll be fine. As for the rest of the publishers in the industry, best of luck doing only what gamers tell you to do.

    • Randall Hellmer

This article is from 3 years ago. The reality today is very different.

      • JB

So now they got enough cash to run 35 years… LOL

        • Randall Hellmer

It went from $10.5 billion in 2011 to less than $5 billion in 2013. Discounting currency exchange, more than 41% over two years.

Which means that your estimate is off by a factor of 10.

          • JB

I was actually just making a joke, albeit a bad one gathered by your response? Just roll with it, man. :-)

          • Randall Hellmer

Well now I feel rather silly. :P

          • JB

You shouldn’t though… I thought the “LOL” would indicate something, but on this forum you can’t tell who’s serious and who’s not sometimes…

So you’re saying Nintendo will go bankrupt in 3.5 years by going at the same pace they are now? You may want to recheck the numbers, as that seems a bit off. I know they’re losing a lot of money, but that seems like too much.

          • Randall Hellmer

Not really. It’s much more complex than that, and you can’t assume that everything will stay exactly the same year after year.

Saying their cash reserves will only last 3.5 years is as distant from reality as saying it can absorb losses for 35 years.

          • http://www.lemonparty.com I-Think-Im-Green

Talk about talking bulshit and spinning numbers!

they went from 812 billion yen in 2011 to 462 in 2012, when they released the damn WiiU, then to 478 yen in 2013.
thats not over two years, jackass that’s one year investing on a launch, then keeping things stable!
you make it sound like they have been losing money all this time when they spent some making wiiu, then lost nothing.
geez, one would say launching a console cost money!
            recheck your crappy math.

  • CCM

Nintendo is just in a bit of a rut right now. Good games sell systems. Those good games are on the way. I can’t wait for Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8, Zelda Wii U etc. Plus I’m hoping for news at E3 about StarFox, Metroid and F-Zero among others.

I’ve recently gotten into the retro gaming scene. Partially due to the fact I’m getting a bit turned off by today’s industry with unfinished games shipping only to have us beta test them for free, then pay to fix them with DLC later on. Or the now $70 games in Canada for new releases. Plus I kick myself every day that I sold my NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis all those years ago and I want them all back!

My hunting/searching for this stuff has shown that by FAR the most valuable, sought after consoles and games are either made by Nintendo or were made for Nintendo consoles. They have contributed to this industry and influenced the way it is today more than ANY other company period!

  • Randall Hellmer

    “June 23, 2012″

“recent article” indeed. This was written in 2012, using figures from 2011. It’s way past out-of-date.

And if you actually look a the figures on Nintendo’s current balance sheet, that 812.8 billion Yen has fallen by almost half, which kicks the premise of this article in the teeth.

    This is embarrassing.

    • oontz

Maybe you should write for this site… you seem to know how to research something before posting it.

      • Ice Climbers

He’d be better over at NintendoLife where they are always doom and gloom – users over there will go as far as blaming the Virtual Console for Nintendo’s bad situation every single week.

        • oontz

WOW you totally missed the point.

There is a BIG difference between doom and gloom articles and actually providing readers with correct data on something you’re reporting on.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Yeeeah…Ashley has made some blunders, but this one has to be the worst. Don’t know how she calls it a recent article, when it clearly shows it’s nearly two years old. Poor journalism there.

  • Steph

It’s not that Nintendo will die, it’s just that the wiiU will

    • David Trail

      Good luck with that!

  • Cody McKrell

And yet somehow, this ‘news’ doesnt make me happier about owning wiiu hardware that has next to nothing going for it. Im not surprised that many of you are overjoyed to see that nintendo can continue phoning it in for the next 40 years, but theres a handful of us that expect a bit more than that from nintendo that arent nearly as excited at the fact that the company’s former glory can sustain it’s mediocrity for longer than most of us are willing to wait.

    • David Trail

It has more going for it than PS4/ Xbox One.

      • Jonathan George Anaya

No it doesn’t… Compare the WiiUs 2014 lineup to the X1 or PS4s… Nintendo has 3 games at best worth buying: MarioKart, Smash and Bayonetta.

X1: Halo: Anniversary 2, Kingdom Hearts 3, MGS:Ground Zero, Watch Dogs, Forza Horizon 2, Final Fantasy 14, COD: Modern Warefare 4, Madden, and Wolfenstein

        • David Trail

Wii U DKC TF, Mario Kart 8, SSB, Bayonetta 2, Monoliftsofts X, Sonic Boom, Hyrule Warriors, Shin Migami V Fire Emblem, Zelda U…

The multiplats look better on PC? I can play them, on any console but the Wii U. Wii U exclusives are getting better reviews than most multiplats? Wii U is the best.

          • Brandon

I understand the wii u is your preferred console of this gen, bit it definitely not the best, especially when its missing out on alot of great games.

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

            that are on PC too?

          • Brandon

The point is the wii u is not getting them, and pc misses out on great games also.

          • Brandon Olson

Hey guys. Get this. What if it’s all just opinions?

          • oontz

            Don’t feed the troll

          • David Trail

They look better on PC. It is the best.

          • Brandon

Its on pc seems to be the excuse for everything for nintendo fans, the point is its not coming to wii u. Still just the best for you and other nintendo fans, but not the best.

        • TehEngineer

You sure anyone’ll be seeing KH3 this year?

          • David Trail

Let him believe what he wants to believe. Don’t say we didn’t warn him.

        • David Trail

I’m only interested in three of those games lol!

        • MerryBlind .

          Halo 2: Anniversary: Awesome
          -KH3: not this year
-MGS: GZ: just a prologue that shouldn’t really be its own game in the first place (proper Phantom Pain not this year)
-Forza: mehh, Project Cars will probably own it anyway
          -FF14 : mehhh
          -COD: seriously?
          -Madden: ok…..
-Wolfenstein: we’ll see about that, but probably nothing special

So that’s like 1 game really worth something, and it’s an HD remake…

I’ll take the 2 masterpieces that Smash U and MK 8 will be.

          But thank you for trying.

          • Brandon

Theres more then that coming that wont be on wii u. Like batman arkham knight, the division, all sports titles, murdered, destiny, dying light, elder scrolls online, and more to be announced.

          • MerryBlind .

Well I got a PC for those. I thought he was only talking about real exclusives.

          • David Trail

            Meh

          • Brandon

Someone is mad there not getting these games on wii u.

          • Jonathan George Anaya

Next Gen has something for everybody.Plus, I left out Destiny. Halo, Destiny, and Titanfall will be the Best Games of 2014. Plus, rumor has it that Killer Instinct will get a new roster of 8 adding to the original 8 fighters

          • MerryBlind .

Couldn’t care less about Titanfall, never understood all the hype around it.
Halo 5 we’ll see, 4 was good, but not as good as the original trilogy.
Destiny looks great though I agree, but does it have a release date yet?
Finally KI, no matter how good the game might be, it has a completely retarded transaction system that Microsoft are trying to get its customers used to, but it’s just to make more money, better not encourage that…

      • oontz

        No it doesn’t.

        • David Trail

Multiplats look better on PC. Infamous isn’t even 90% plus on meta critic. Enjoy mediocrity fool.

          • oontz

ha ha, Infamous isn’t even released yet or ON metacritic.

    • David Trail

      Mediocrity???

      SM3DW 93% > Killzone Shadowfall only 73%!

      • Cody McKrell

No ones talking about other consoles but you.

        • oontz

          Ignore him, he’s an idiot.

  • LordiMcKill

Nintendo has been around for over 100 years and they’ll be around for another 100 more.

Although the thought of Mario still being around for another 100 years sounds kinda frightening.

  • Matt

You’re lucky that you don’t live near me. I’d like to pay you a visit and do everyone a favor.

  • Herp Derpstreit

The article that was the source for this info is from June 2012 things have changed since then. Nintendo I’m sure still has some money in the bank but I don’t think it’s fair to call this article “recent”.

Barely. They haven’t lost that much money in 2 years. This article is still relevant. Nintendo still has roughly USD$10 billion in the bank. How much money Nintendo lost in each of those 2 years is roughly the same amount of money as the article states they would lose. That’s plenty of money to have 3 more failed consoles. Obviously, that won’t happen, as they will correct their mistakes for the next console.

      • oontz

        “This article is still relevant.”

        No, it isn’t.

“Nintendo still has roughly USD$10 billion in the bank.”

No they don’t. They actuay have roughly $7 billion USD in the bank after their last stock buy back. This data is readily available online if you care to research it yourself.

  • Iflywright

I didn’t realize they had that much coin. Now it makes it even more confounding that they don’t advertise more.

    • Justin Gray

I wonder if they have advisers telling them the cost of investing in advertising won’t bring a return.

      • Iflywright

That must be the reason, because otherwise it just doesn’t make sense.
My point of view is that they’re already in the red and that engaging in more marketing is better for the brand and sales in the long run versus the present course.

  • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Anybody who says Nintendo is doomed is not a hardcore gamer.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

To be fair, I don’t think the average poster cares whether you think they are a hardcore gamer or not. Lol. I think people worry too much what Nintendo haters think. Then again, there are just people like myself who just are amused on how riled up Nintendo fans and fanboys get on the web.

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Neither do I care what they think of me. It’s really the fan boys that get riled up-i know it’s typically easy to get them confused. The line is drawn where fan boys’ rage is pure obsession and fans’ fervor is pure passion. Without passion, you’re not a gamer at all. I think Nintendo is better off than people are saying but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t correct those that are preaching otherwise.

      • Rinslowe

“I think people worry too much what NINTENDO HATERS think.”
        Lol, Say what???

    • oontz

Ha ha. Please define hardcore gamer?

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

I believe there to be many definitions of a hardcore gamer that are a matter of perspective and context. In this case a hardcore gamer is one that never gives up-never quits; loyalty to the end. Xbox 360 gamers and PS3 gamers are hardcore because they didn’t give up when Xbox 360 didn’t have Wi-Fi built into its first model and when PS3 was priced too high. or when Wii supposedly had a drought near the end of its cycle but many hardcore gamers were still left to pick up Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Skyward Sword. nor did hardcore gamers give up on PC when everyone thought that consoles would make PC gaming extinct. Now hardcore gamers are on Xbox One and PS4 because they want to show the world that Xbox One does have potential and PS4 is the product of all the years of research and trial and error Mark Cerny has done with Sony to show they’ve learned from what they did with PS3. See? No matter what, hardcore gamers just never give up. Now,the media is saying Nintendo is finished. As a hardcore gamer, I refute that and say their time has just begun. If you are or anyone else are hardcore gamers, you will not give up on Nintendo like you supported other systems and said those weren’t finished. Nintendo has NEVER quit on you-though many people try to put them in a different light-so why do you quit on them? Because they’ve changed too much and aren’t direct competitors now or because you’ve never heard of the Iceberg Principle and rather stare at the surface searching for answers that only lie deep within? Does that answer your question, or did I admit any significant points of interest you are waiting for?

  • Steve

    Then, inflation hits.

But seriously, what is the point of continuing to operate when you are always having deficits? While it is good that they have that much reserves, it is not something your just spend impulsively. There are still shareholders who want to make money.

  • enigmaxtreme

Recent, this article is almost 2 years old?

    • oontz

      yeah… click bait, nothing more.

  • oontz

WOW, and we have sunken to a new level of journalism (if you can call it that) on wiiudaily.

Ashley can you please at least provide an actual source for these numbers? You have added a link to the original article on Games Radar which doesn’t even have a source of it’s own, but says thanks to their friends at UK’s Nintendo Gamer magazine… and provides a link to their facebook page. There doesn’t seem to be a legitimate source for any of this information. The research I’ve done on my own suggest these numbers are from a financial report in 2011, putting it at 3+ years old.

Really? Is this really the level of writing we can expect from here?

  • oontz

I will be really impressed if Ashley issues an update to this outdated “news” piece.

    http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2013/130424e.pdf

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Same here. Naturally, the crazies of the site will give her a pass.

      • oontz

Seriously, who sources “NEWS” from an article written in June of 2012. It’s not like Financial information stays static. It’s constantly changing. Laughable at best.

Nothing more than click bait for ad revenue.

        • David Trail

It’s two years. 38 years Nintendo can survive for on their own money. Hard to read pal?

          • oontz

Yeah it’s already been two years and they’ve burned through almost half of what they had (stated in this article). Read much? These numbers are straight from Nintendo, not some click bait article.

Research and knowledge is your friend.

      • Rinslowe

        You did no such thing…

    • Chazprime
  • val berger

It doesn’t matter how much money you have if your whole value is getting downgraded and you’re losing the connection tho the audience. And I’m not even one of those guys thinking they were doomed, actually they are said to be dead for a decade now and look who sold 100Mio Wiis. No Nintendo is doing fine, I’m just saying money alone doesn’t necessarily help. Well ok, one important exception might be, that money changes the amount of retries you may have and I guess Nintendo could afford quite a bunch of WiiU-like consoles until they’d finally face THE END. Still there are quite some more important values there than just money.

    • oontz

Public perception means a lot more than money in the bank.

  • oontz

Yeah it’s already been two years since this article and Nintendo has already burned through almost half of what they had in 2012 (from $10.5 billion USD to about $7 billion USD.

So in 2 years Nintendo already spent 3.5 billion of what they had in the bank in 2012 ($10.5 billion). To survive for 38 years would mean Nintendo spending less than $0.2 billion a year. So by YOUR math nintendo has already used up over 15 of those 38 years you claim they can survive. HA HA.

Research and knowledge is your friend. Not to mention very basic mathematics skills.

    • Carlos Coronado

Nintendo buy back like 12 % of their shares for like 1.5
      billion dollars.

      • oontz

Yes. That is included in the $3.5 billion that they have spent since this article was written. Nintendo did a share buy back to please its stock holders and keep them happy.

        • Carlos Coronado

Nintendo also build a new building also bought Monolith the
new building was like 300 million and I don’t know how much Monolith those are just them expending money. There is also the lawsuit that they face for the 3ds I don’t know what it was I think it was the use of the 3ds camera and after the lawsuit they had to paid a certain present for every 3ds sold I think that was a huge chunk.

          • oontz

Yes, again that is Nintendo spending money. Which completely goes against what this article is trying to imply.

          • Carlos Coronado

What I’m trying to say that that is the reason of why the huge loss of money so quickly you make it sound like they losing that amount for no reason at all. Is not like they going to build another new building, get sue again or rebuy there stocks again.

          • oontz

“that is the reason of why the huge loss of money so quickly”

Sorry I am not talking about a loss of money. I am talking about Nintendo spending their money.

“you make it sound like they losing that amount for no reason at all.”

They aren’t losing anything… are you educated? You seem to be lacking some basic comprehension of this topic. Here let me break it down for you some more..

            – In 2012 nintendo HAD $10.5 billion
            – since then they have SPENT (not lost) around $3.5 billion. – this article claims that Nintendo can survive for 38 years
            – for Nintendo to do that, they have to spend less than $0.2 billion a year.
            – Which they didn’t.
            – making the entire point of the article invalid and false.

            Do you understand now?

  • TheLostKokiri

I mean really, most people don’t expect that Nintendo will go bankrupt. The real argument is that people are claiming the WiiU to be a failure. I Personally don’t think that Nintendo will ever get out of the habit of making consoles that sell poorly, my reason for this is that they are the only company that continue to take risks (and can currently afford to).

When you look at their history of consoles, some have sold poorly, some have sold well. If you look at the Wii, it was considered a success financially, however many gamers continue to see the Wii as not being for ‘hardcore’ gamers. The WiiU has suffered because it tried to shake off the ‘casual’ label, whilst still keeping the Wii brand attached. This has just led to confusion among the majority of the market, not to mention the fact the games have been slow to appear.

Put simply, the WiiU will probably not be a financial success, but with the right support, it could still appease a large group of gamers. The 3DS is a huge success, and I can only imagine is raking in the money for Nintendo. We can all bash them for the WiiU but so long as they attempt at innovating then Nintendo are good for the gaming industry and gamers alike.

  • Arthur Jarret

I’ve got enough money in the bank to last A WEEK.
Most of that is Nintendo’s fault. They don’t allow me to save my money.
    Sony is to blame, too.

    • Shootdatrupee!…

The less time your money-in-bank lasts, the longer Nintendo’s and Sony’s last. :P

  • RazorRuss

Forbes magazine, like all great talking head decision makers for the common folk, even suggests that Nintendo acquire the Xbox division from its jumping ship management and falling favor with the core focus on the company. Nintendo never would, Microsoft never would – but just more food for thought on “poor Nintendo”.

Still no update from Ashley. Sad. Very sad.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t think she’s going to acknowledge her mistake. Sad indeed. Though, no skin off my back. It’s her own rep, not ours. Also, like you and I have said, this site isn’t meant to be taken too seriously. You’ve seen most of the demographic that support this site. ;P

      • oontz

It’s just sad because any reputable news outlet would issue an update and acknowledge their mistake right away.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

No doubt, they certainly would. That’s what separates the news outlets from fansites.

          • oontz

            True.

  • Cahone2

Nintendont care. Any why aren’t they giving a larger dividend if they have so much money.

  • oontz

Any reputable news outlet would issue an update and acknowledge their mistake.

    • Shootdatrupee!…

That is, no news outlet ever.

      • oontz

Are you seriously defending Ashley King? Since they’re all bad it’s okay if she does it? Is that the level we are expecting around here?

        • Shootdatrupee!…

          Um… I think we have a misunderstanding here… Mind telling me what you’re talking about?… Sorry…I just…ugh…

          • oontz

The information sited above by Ashely is completely false, and has been proved as such.

          • Shootdatrupee!…

Right. I saw your comment below. Thing is, I’ve never seen any news site correct falsely reported facts unless its world scale stuff, so, I won’t hold my breath.

          • oontz

I’ve seen it all the time, hell even IGN corrects and issues statements when they report or provide the wrong information on something.

  • ACE

so if they have a lot money why they made the Wii U underpowered …

  • William Cole

I hope they don’t plan on doing that. If the Wii U had just forgotten the darn GamePad the console would cost about $200(controller included). Nintendo needs to go back to the basics, that is when they will boom again.
