Super Mario 3D World wins Best Multiplayer award at SXSW

super mario 3d world

Over the weekend Austin’s South By Southwest interactive media festival took place, along with an award ceremony highlighting some of the best games the industry has to offer. Nintendo took home a prize for Super Mario 3D World, as the title won Best Multiplayer Game.

Nintendo has always taken its presence at SXSW semi-seriously and this year was no different; the Kyoto-based company teamed up with Pennzoil in order to run a special promotion called Mario Kart Re-imagined for attendees. A go kart track equipped with karts and helmets that sport their character logos were available for attendees to ride, making it one of the most unique promotions we’ve seen for Mario Kart to date.

While the interactive portion of SXSW is over, the festival continues on with motion pictures and other media.

Congrats to the Big N for winning that award for my favorite Wii U title… Super Mario 3D World!

  • Zombie_Andrew

Wins best Multiplayer – doesn’t have online multiplayer. Some proof that local co-op is just better.

    • Zombie_Andrew

and I know this is shameless self promotion of my motion design work but I hope this video I made can be shared amongst those thinking about what console to buy, or with those who say the Wii U doesn’t have games. To help promote the Wii U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2W9BrVEKMQ

      • WiiUisgaming

This should be a TV ad.

        • Zombie_Andrew

Thank you :) I’m flattered. Please share as much as you can to spread the message! The Wii u has plenty to entertain someone while they’re waiting for their favourite Nintendo franchise to come to light, a lot of people are just scared they’ll like a Nintendo game. Like closeted people who hate on gay people.

On a wishful thinking note: Maybe if enough people share it could even reach someone in Nintendo who may hire me instead of sue me for using their imagery :P

        • Zombie_Andrew

You look like you’d like this video I made https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmdtIYYmgW8

          • jjbredesen

I have already subscribed to you :P so i have seen it, and you area natural, go apply for a job at Nintendo now! Or i will recommend you!

          • Zombie_Andrew

Haha I don’t usually use Disqus, I didn’t know one could “subscribe” xD

Thank you for these kind words. Unfortunately I don’t think Nintendo would hire me. Not only because I don’t think they are hiring. But I don’t think Nintendo would hire anyone who would actually make a decent advert or marketing campaign :P Then again when the Wii U was revealed I never thought I’d buy a Nintendo console again. How wrong I was :P

          • jjbredesen

Well i was talking about youtube :P, you can follow people on disqus though. Il make sure Nintendo sees this video though, if i had the money i would even put it on TV, but i don’t have the rights…

      • Robert Butters

Nintendo’s marketing strategy: Advertise so poorly that your loyal customers become fed-up and do the marketing for you. Good video

        • Zombie_Andrew

Yes If they wont do it then loyal customers have to do their part. If each of the 5.8million Wii U users persuaded just ONE of their friends to buy a Wii U this month then Nintendo would be unstoppable.I urge all Wii U owners to aim to do this – and boost the Wii U sales in order to gain third party publisher’s support!

      • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

This is fantastic! I have a feeling you’ll eventually work for Nintendo in the marketing part.

      • brian

Wow, nice video. Nintendo, please pay attention. This is how you do it.

        • Zombie_Andrew

The more people who share it, the more likely Nintendo will pay attention, actually wonder how one could get it sent to Nintendo? Hmmmmm *strokes beard*

    • The Clockwork Being

Yep this only proves it so much more. To be honest when I get the new Smash Bros I will still invite my friends to my house so we can play local co-op even if the online is flawless and they own Wii U’s. To be honest I think that for a majority of games like Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Pikmin and the likes it will always be:

      Local Multiplayer>Online Multiplayer

      • Zombie_Andrew

I think online multiplayer works with certain types of games like competitive online modes, but co-operative multiplayer is far better with friends in a room, say if Metroid becomes a third/first (or even both at the same time!) person shooter/action-adventure/horror game for Wii U, I’d like at least to see at least one online deathmatch mode that allows customisation of characters as well as other competitive and co-op modes both online and offline

        • Levi Johansen

Good idea, cuz that doesn’t not allready exists a million times over.

The only difference would be Metroid skins, maps and music. There is probably a mod for some PC game with this allready.

If Nintendo is to make an online FPS game, I sure hope it would not be Metroid – but rather Star Fox!!

          • Zombie_Andrew

I’m talking about a single player campaign with at least ONE single mode which could help Nintendo bring across the Halo/Killzone crowd to a Nintendo platform, increasing the fanbase rather than let it stagnate and you loose your mind over that?

If Nintendo are to do any online game they should do Legends of Hyrule – a MMORPG based in the same universe as the Zelda universe – just set in a time where the Hero doesn’t exist and you yourself have to become the hero…or a villain. Have Monolith make it too with “X” style visuals.

If it was an online FPS I hope it would be a completely new IP

          • Levi Johansen

Well, as for MMORPG – I’d say Pokemon would be a safer bet.

    • Snake Eater

Local Multiplayer is the greatest and yet people think they should be getting rid of it.

    • Ducked

Exactly, playing with a friend on the couch is much better then hearing annoying people on a mic

      • Zombie_Andrew

Plus you can physically co-ordinate to work together, and whack people around the head with a rolled up newspaper for being cheeky/annoying :P

  • Ducked

I know Super Mario 3D World made coop 3D platforming possible. But honestly shouldn’t Call of Duty Ghosts have won this award? It’s probably the most innovative video game of all time, plus it has online multiplayer. It’s unique gameplay changed the world of gaming. So yeah Ghosts should have won, stupid SXSW!

    • Zombie_Andrew

“Call of Duty Ghosts have won this award? It’s probably the most innovative video game of all time” You should be a professional comedian

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/TheMwgly Mwgly

        He is.

      • Ducked

Why thank you. If my statement was serious then, hold on IGN is calling me, they’re hiring me off the spot.

    • Snake Eater

Call of Duty Ghosts should have won the “Same as Last Time” Award

  • The Clockwork Being

Super Mario 3D World the flawless first 3D mario game with Multiplayer! Played it and it is a marvel!

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

Haven’t liked it but great for Nintendo :3

    • uPadWatcher

      Why not?

      • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

‘don’t know. I’m more of the sunshine style, I don’t like score * time games, didn’t feels enjoyable on Wii U (preferred Mario 3D land, suited weel on handheld), etc

But I’m an embittered gamer so don’t listen to me :D

  • Dark-Link73

I never thought I’d see a mainstream Mario game get an award for “Best Multiplayer” game. Also, it shows that local multi player mode is still more relevant than online multi player. :-D

  • Deadpool U

I’m not surprised SM3DW is one of the best multiplayer games I’ve played in long time.

  • Capt. Smoker

That takes me by surprise a little, I thought Soul Sacrifice had best multiplayer last year, 3D World was still great though :) a step forward for Nintendo games for sure.

  • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

    And deservedly so.

  • greengecko007

Ironic, considering multiplayer was really the only bad thing about this game.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

I’ll take your word for it.

      • greengecko007

LOL, it’s weird, because most people seemed to enjoy it, and it was one of the selling points of the game, but literally all of my friends that have tried to play it with me go “Wow, this is terrible”. They love the single player experience though.

  • lonewolf88

    did anyone doubt this?

  • wiimenonowiiu

This game is alot of fun 4 players got my family to play together mariokart 8 will be alot of fun

  • steveb944

Hmm. Maybe I should buy this. But yet again I find Rayman pretty fun but I rarely get a chance to co-op because we’re all so busy.

  • InterTreble

SM3DW is a masterpiece, no words to tell how this game can be classic and innovative as the same time. But especially entertaining. Something that gamers sometimes forget to look for when they play games. Congratulation Mario! I wish every SH to produce an IP that after 30 years can win prizes and be at the top of the world, as Mario does. It-s-a win! An epic win! ;)

  • pbd2

The multiplayer wasnt great, when people just run too far apart the whole game breaks. It should do what Lego does and go to split screen when people seperate. A much better game in single player.

    • Saleh Sbeiti

Or like Toe Jam and Earl.

    • greengecko007

I’ve found the multiplayer only works when you’re practically holding each others’ hands and strolling through the level. A great experience for a significant other? Actually trying to play the game with others just breaks the game and creates chaos, with players dying left and right. I guess that’s funny to some people.

  • Brandon

Never played SM3DW, but it looks great. But damn did the last of us get alot of awards, its a great game so it deserved it.

    • WellWisher

I got it a week after launch and am still playing it every other day. Especially when people come over.

  • Leo

Its a perfect multiplayer experience, especially for the kids, i’ve seen many kids crowding the stores to play it with their friends.

    • Esoh

Agree. My 8 and 6 year old have been playing it for 3 months now. Our goal has been to get all of the stars on all of the levels. I do most of the heavy lifting, but they are getting more adept and helping out. It’s been one of the most fun things that we do.

  • Carlos Webster

    Yay!!!!!!! Good for Nintendo.

  • URFTBOUND4LIFE .

This just proves that local multiplayer is still relevant in this day and age.
