Japanese sales numbers – Vita claims top spot, Wii U is sixth

wii_u_launch_japan-16

Every week we take a look at Media Create’s numbers inside Japan to see what games and hardware is trending among Japanese gamers. The Japanese market is notoriously fickle, as a game that has sold 300k copies one week can drop down to just 5k the next week. This week both the PlayStation 3 and the PS Vita received a few substantial titles in order to boost hardware sales, while the only new title among Nintendo hardware was the 3DS title Crayon Shin-chan.

Yokai Watch and Mario Party: Island Tour still retain top spots in the software line-up, while the supposed blockbuster release of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes has dropped to just 10k titles sold this week. We’ve only got a few more weeks before Mario Kart 8 enters these charts, so it will be interesting to see how the Wii U performs then. Surprisingly the release of Titanfall on the Xbox 360 has allowed Microsoft to claim a top ten spot for a software title this week, despite sales for that title being relatively weak compared to titles at the top of the list. There just aren’t that many Xbox 360 consoles in Japan with only 200 to 300 being sold at a time. Despite the release of Titanfall, the Xbox 360 saw a drop in weekly sales.

The couple in the photo make me smile.

    • matthew garcia

Lol I hope she gets on top

    • King Brady

Me too, not for sure if they are a couple though! lol :P

      • matthew garcia

Lol they are a couple I fear for her

  • jjbredesen

This…this is just sad, lets hope MK8 can help… btw the new articles don’t show up on WUD, you can only see them through the facebook page..

    • matthew garcia

I would imagine that mk8 should have started helping by now.

      • WiiUPS4

I hope it helps but it maybe to late

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I would think that hardware sales would pick up in preparation of MK8. Doesn’t appear to be happening.

        • Rinslowe

Why on Earth would you think that?
It’s historically been the complete opposite on all platforms before a big release.

As the Japanese gamer waits patiently for the bundle that was confirmed a while back. And of course the price drops in other titles that follow Karts release.
Most people looking to get a Wii U for Kart will try to combo that with another title together with the bundle.

          • matthew garcia

You told oontz earlier that he shouldn’t assume about what people care about but now your making a guess about why no one is buying wii u. U don’t know why the wii u isn’t selling for mario kart yet. As far as we know this has been the same talk for all previous big nintendo releases and non of them have helped in a big way. The wii u console just isn’t moving consoles no matter what for some reason. I’m not sure what to think anymore

          • Rinslowe

It’s actually not even the same thing… Lol
I’m not speculating what any individual is feeling or thinking. I’m simply explaining a common trend in terms of sales behaviour. Something which as I mentioned has happened before on many occasions.

Why would you even link those two comments in the first place, the point was obvious…??

” As far as we know this has been the same talk for all previous big nintendo releases and non of them have helped in a big way.”

To say none of the titles have helped in a big way is just being plain ignorant to the facts. Frankly.
It’s all relative and to say that sales hadn’t picked up “in decent no’s” since WWHD is just strange. The figures during the drought and after (since Pikmin 3) is there for all to see in hindsight.
I don’t really care if what you mean’t was sales haven’t gone off the charts because again that would have been very unlikely. Again – relative.

          • matthew garcia

Sales behavior has not been working in wii u ‘ s favor. Ps4 has just crossed 7 million and honestly I’m not sure what sales trend that falls under cuz honestly I’m not even sure why it’s selling so great. I have like 6 games on it already but infamous is really like the only system seller it has. Can’t be hype anymore cuz everybody knows about the console and what games it has but sales just keep pushin

          • Rinslowe

            I’m liking the PS4 as well…
It’s selling well because Sony are almost brilliant when it comes to advertising. And now with Shuhei in the spotlight more and more, good with PR as well…

But lets take a step back and in keeping the Wii U sales discussion in context, a +48% increase in sales since Sep 2013 following a roughly 6-8 month drought in sales – is a notable indicator as to the effectiveness of their first party titles selling well for the platform.
To clarify I never said the Wii U was flying off the shelves, or that the sales drought was not also indicative of a inconsistency in typical sales behaviour.
But ever since their first party titles started to sell the system from around Sep to now, in more no’s since the launch window ended. Then it is absolutely fair to say that, at least for first party titles since again “SEP”, typical sales behaviour has been observed.

      • Commander Raichu

i actually am starting to see preorders pick up for it but my guess it wont pick up until may…or not…

  • Pinky Peach

Well, EVERY console dropped. Like, a lot. I don’t see anything to worry about.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

You are right that every console dropped this week, but you’re wrong that they all dropped a lot. Unless, you’re talking about Nintendo products only.

      • Pinky Peach

Yeah, Vita didn’t drop that much, but still there is a notorious drop in console sales througout this month. Just look at PS4 and 3DS. Vita got steady because it got a japanese appealing game, and between PS3 and Vita, japanese prefer portables. Anyway.

        • jrob23

Vita is doing much better in Japan it seems. Must be the games. It always comes down to the games. The slow trickle coming from Wii U is just not cutting it

    • Ducked

      Vita didn’t drop much

    • matthew garcia

Every console has dropped but cmon wii u is almost at Psp numbers

      • Rinslowe

It’s still better than the weekly drought no’s from 2013, which was consistently around 2000 units for weeks.
It really comes down to Kart. And many gamer’s looking for a Wii U are waiting out for the Kart deals/ bundles AND the inevitable deals that happen on other titles during that time…

        • matthew garcia

Honestly I don’t think people are taking kart to seriously. I don’t think wii u consoles are all of a sudden spike up cuz of this one game. We should have seen some increases in sales by now and we havnt. Actually they went down

          • Rinslowe

Actually sales going down is to be expected in my opinion.
The sales spike will come on the release of the bundle in Japan.
As with the norm, other titles in the Japanese Wii U library will no doubt get discounted too. People are just doing what they’ve always done. Hold off for the better deals to come because of Karts release and capitilise on it. Kart bundle + an extra game to save some cash…

    • greengecko007

The PS4 only dropped by a few hundred sales, and the Vita dropped by less than a thousand.

The only consoles with a considerable drop are the PS3, Wii U, 3DS, and PSP.

  • Daniel

The articles only shows up after refreshing the page

  • Mr Ninty

no games no sale simple as that. i hope mario kart can put the wiiu back on top for a couple of weeks, atleast until august i hope when bayoneta and some other games will arive

  • Daniel Gonzalez

More bad news or the Wii U. It took quite a dip this time. Perhaps Nintendo should release Mario Kart 8 a month early.

    • Commander Raichu

or they could just fire iwata

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I would support them on that decision. I feel they need new blood for leadership.

        • Commander Raichu

SAKOURI! or whatever his name spells
he would be perfect since he seems like he knows how to lead(tons and tons of great games)
          he seem adaptable
and he will be more OPEN!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Masahiro Sakurai?

          • Commander Raichu

yes hes awesome and deserves it since miyamotos gonna retire soon

        • SP-937-215

          REGGIE

        • Commander Raichu

i found you somewhere else before?

      • WiiUPS4

Don’t fire him just new leadership

        • Commander Raichu

well they could send him back to HAL

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I wouldn’t mind that. I think it’s better for him in my opinion. He can work on a Kirby game for Wii U.

          • Commander Raichu

and sakouri can be more……OPEN! :D

      • Capt. Smoker

I really wish they would, he fails at the most simplistic of things….

        • Commander Raichu

personally i think he went down at the end of the wii

          • Capt. Smoker

I think he got lucky with the Wii, with it not being HD n all, he’s a bit too naive for a 70 year old business man…. lol

          • Commander Raichu

            looks 50

          • Capt. Smoker

            Japanese geezers are impressive

          • Commander Raichu

            yes yes they are

    • Capt. Smoker

At this point, even Kart won’t raise sales, the Wii was a fluke for everything related to it, kart did nothing for any of the Nintendo home sales before the Wii and it’ll be the same scenario again, Nintendo rely on certain games to sell the systems, I think the markets moving away from that idea these days, consoles simply have to do and offer more, especially considering the popularity with smartphones, smart boxes, smart tvs etc lol Wii U offers none of that, hence it being a steaming pile of cow dung ^___^

      • Commander Raichu

now i agree and disagree because it could raise wii us sales to a steady 50000 to 60000 IF they advertise right and make a bundle
but that has a great chance of not happening so well never know

        • Capt. Smoker

I think it’ll raise the sales but not the way people are claiming it will, same goes for Smash, the 3ds will benefit most from that release, Nintendo need to do more to save the Wii U because a few first party releases won’t do that for them, I find it strange…. it’s primary controller is a tablet, yet they do nothing with the possibilities for it….. like open it up to mobile devs.

          • Commander Raichu

im thinking actually it will sell around 400000 to 600000 launch since its selling like hotcakes in the japan preorders(doing better than super mario 3d world, new super mario u,pikmin 3, and dragon quest 10 combined!
wii us ill say possibly 100000(probly 70000) or more but we will have to see :)

          • Capt. Smoker

Seeing dragon quest doing bad…. :( sad times, I hope it can move that amount of consoles though, not just games, that’ll be were it counts, but as long as the big N make profits from their games, then we’ll get more, so fingers crossed they’ll be poopin out gold coins

          • Commander Raichu

hey it sold 1 million all together thou(about 20% are wii u versions)

          • Capt. Smoker

It’s not too bad for a Japan only release, I’m sure the next will sell better, I buy any system that offers me Dragon quest =D

          • Commander Raichu

yeah it sold even better than the wii version :D
im hoping for a another dragon quest for wii u 3ds and ps4(xbone is allergic to jrpgs)

          • Capt. Smoker

the 3ds and vita if we look at psp and ds, should be the jrpg pumping machines for years to come, I’d be surprised if we didn’t see a few for 3ds at least and maybe one more for the wii u, ps4 should have western rpgs I imagine….. -_- western….. am I right?, like western devs have any imagination, xbox last gen started good for jrpgs…. then fell off the wagon and had none, I’m kind of theating a new Dragon quest at the moment, I love jap dub n find most english dub acting terrible, so I hope there’s dual audio because the Wii had some good jrpgs but voice acting let it down majorly especially with arc rise fantasia…. lol

          • Commander Raichu

i think we got 2 big jrpgs for wii u i think
            isn’t its smxfm
            and of course X
now i have a theory that at e3 nintendo will unveil an nfc nintendo allstars rpg
and did they seriously have bad voice translation
did that happen in xenoblade and last story?

          • Capt. Smoker

I’m looking forward to them especially megami emblem, and though Bayonetta isn’t a jrpg, I’m looking forward to that, hope they got jap dubs for that one, only for her voice, it’s soft and sexy :D and yeah… I thought xenoblade and tls had bad dubs, not a fan of plastic British accents

          • Commander Raichu

bayonetta 2 looks good at least nintendo did something right and save that game from being oblivion

          • Brandon

They should re-release the first game, as the wii u enhanced edition.

          • Commander Raichu

yeah do that around a month or two before release

          • Capt. Smoker

They released bloody fate the anime so people could catch up with what they’ve missed, it’s worth a watch ^_^

  • Ducked

That’s terrible, just horrid. Even PS4 is selling weak. Maybe consoles should be ripped out of Japan.

    • matthew garcia

Damn if the Japanese don’t give a shit about wii u then who does

      • Mario

        Uhhh… us?

      • Commander Raichu

i actually think wii u will rise in sales and have a comfortable sales of around 20000 after mario kart since there games coming out more in japan(bayonetta 2 is july) than US
since this gaming is exclusive and if they bundle it i think it will stay at that range until bayonetta 2 which will rise it around 30000 or 40000 then drop down a couple 1000 then you should have hyrule warriers(japan loves dynasty warriers) that should raise sales
fbxsm will raise sales since those are two of the most well known rpg series in existence
then if x comes out for japan that should raise sales
then of course you got yoshi(nonthing different)
then to finish it of smash bros
thats how nintendo can save the wii u in japan for 2014 with raising its sales
then start 2015 with a new rpg for japan and a new shooter ip for the west
        makes sense right

      • Ducked

        Canadians

  • Capt. Smoker

JRPGS, Vita knows where it’s at

    • Commander Raichu

they need to fix it in the americas though because i have not seen one commercial for the vita at the holidays or now

      • Capt. Smoker

I still see some in the uk but not nearly enough unfortunately, in Japan, people could pick it up willy nilly as it probably has a lot of jrpgs and visual novels available to it so it’s instantly an interesting device, Nintendo need to get some of that fan service on board, if psp wasn’t a jrpg machine back then, I’d never have picked it up, ditto now for the Vita

        • Commander Raichu

im starting to notice 3ds is getting more spread out jrpgs(meaning worldwide releases)

          • Capt. Smoker

So far I’ve seen Bravely default and a ps2 port of Tales of the abyss, not sure if the etrian oddyssey and shin megami games qualify as jrpgs…. but I haven’t seen anything else outside of that, Vita has many more upcoming from Japan, the DS dud pretty well with jrpgs so I’m still holding out hope for more from my 2DS

  • Magnus Eriksson

Im very happy to see that Nintendo gets whats it deserves. I really hope it will continue this way so Iwata can be fired, and replaced with a responsible person. 1 lousy game in six months, thats aweful.

    • Yen

Iwata took multiple pay cuts over the years to make sure they wouldn’t have to fire employees. He has also announced that he won’t be stepping down and instead is creating a plan to revitalize the company and fix past mistakes. You can point out his mistakes all you want, but he’s taking responsibility for it instead of stepping down and let someone else fix his mess.

      • Magnus Eriksson

        Ok. Iwatas mistakes:
        1. Lying about the third party support on Wii U
        2. Unable to make a business deal with third parties to get AAA titles for the Wii U.
        3. Unable to make a deal with Ubi to get Rayman released as planned, instead of hurting the fanbase
        4. Instead of focusing on commercials he gave stores handouts that showed the difference between Wii and Wii U.
        5. Releasing Wii Mini when he should be focusing on Wii U.
        6. Release the Wii U with NSMBU instead of something that focused on the pas
        7. Eh… the pad? Why make it all when nothing shows its capabilities?
        8. Releasing Zelda WW HD instead of focusing on something new
        9. Not announcing one new game since E3 (or january/february 2013 actually)
        10. Two games the first six months??? And I thought the first six where dry.
        11. Caring more about my grandma as a customer than me. She never supported Nintendo.
        12. Releasing NSMBU, NSLU, DKCFR on a platform that is filled with indie 2D platformers. Why not something that brings variety?
        13. Letting poor indiedevs carry the burden by themselves.
        14. Smash U released much later than the 3ds version.
        15. Announcing Cranky Kong on VGX.
        16. Lying about the sales expectations (reduced from 9 to 2.8M short before the financial year).

        • jjbredesen

          / This

could not say it better myself, you should get WUD to publish an article for you!

        • Nintendo Dragon

I agree with you completely. The absolute best way to get third party companies on board with making games for the system is extremely simple. Just get them to work on their IP’s I mean for goodness sake F-Zero is overdue I wouldn’t mind someone working on it while they focus on their bigger IP’s.. I mean get someone to make a Golden Sun game for Wii U maybe Square Enix? I mean there are so many companies they could reach out to to keep the 1st party games going it’s not even funny

        • WiiUPS4

Agree with most of that but it is time for new leadership

          • Commander Raichu

            SAKOURI MAKE HIM LEADER!
            please ;)

        • Rinslowe

Agree with almost everything. Except the gamepad…. And WWHD…
          It was art…
9 and 10 are pretty much the same thing…
          11 humour.
          13…???
15 VGX was the biggest WTF gaming event of 2013. Nintendo’s only mistake is that they were there at all…

But yeah, in a nut shell Iwata has a lot to answer for. I’m not there in the “he needs to go camp” yet. But I’m warming up to the idea, that something pretty big needs to happen in their ranks. Mostly within their PR/ Marketing divisions. Truth be told, we’ll never influence Nintendo on their game schedules – and for good reason. But they should certainly be actively looking at expanding their abilities in that regard if they don’t have enough manpower to produce at least one AAA game every two months.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Yeah, dont misunderstand me. Personally I was happy about the Zelda WW HD because I never had a chance to play it before. It was like a new Zelda for me (I was busy bringing kids to the world when it came). But everything is not just about me and my happiness. I actually care for Nintendo as its been part of basically my whole life. Then it hurts to see them making business decisions that hurts the company. And its saddening to see them giving up, dropping the ball and not caring. I think Zelda WW HD should have been released, but not until 2015-16 or something like that. Not in the launch window.

            If I could have my (reasonable) dream line up they would have done something like this;

            1. New Super Mario 3D World: Launch title
            2. Super Metroid U: Launch title. Instead of a NSMBU platformer and a Zelda WW HD they should have made a Super Metroid remake. Why? It would have fitted together with the approach they tried to make with the U philosophy, I think many of us who bought Zombi U would have appreciate that more, and it could have made an appeal to many more “hardcore” gamers. That wouldnt scare Ubi away either, and Rayman would have been launched in time. Keeping the console alive and kicking.
            3. Nintendo World: Launch title. The time they saved on that product could have been invested in Nintendo Land. Make it more appealing, bigger, more levels and online capabilities. That was a big mistake not doing.
            4. Zelda U: Teasing with a Zelda U in the horizon.
            5. Mario Kart 8: in the horizon
            6. Smash: In the horizon. Not releasing a 3DS version at all.
            7. N64 classic catalogue remake. One surprise every second month.

I think a line up like that could have generated many of those who spend alot of money on videogames.

          • Rinslowe

“1. New Super Mario 3D World: Launch title”

That would have been the extinction event of Nintendo’s shaky public image and a complete game changer.

          • jrob23

I agree with all of those points except Wind Waker one. I never got to play the original and it is a masterpiece. But all the rest I like especially 1 and 6.

          • Commander Raichu

golden eye 64 remake MAKE IT HAPPEN

          • Commander Raichu

i actually think your right they havent been fullfilling promises they need more studios to fill in the droughts and make better launch titlesmario 3d world wouldve sold many many i mean MANY wii us at launch(around the amount of ps4 possibly)

          • jrob23

yeah, you can’t force them to release games quicker because they make polished 1st party games that require time. However, they could open up the purse a little to get Minecraft, maybe buy Capcom or Sega. That way they have more studio working on more games.

        • Yen

          1. Technically, he got third party support. Wii U launched with plenty, they just didn’t do well. Then third party left. He didn’t lie technically.
          2. See 1.
          3. Ubi is more to blame in my opinion. Ubi’s a grown game development company, they should be responsible for their own product.
          4. Eh can’t argue with you there…
          5. I think that was just them trying to get rid of inventory, unless you meant why the WIi Mini happened at all then yea.
          6. Nintendoland (is that what you meant?) was pretty good and still a party favorite to some people. I don’t think it would’ve been too different if Wii U was packed with NSMBU at launch.
          7. Nintendoland showed what it can do pretty well. Problem is they didn’t make anything since then that really uses the gamepad, so you’re right there.
          8. Zelda WW HD actually renewed a lot of fan interest, plus I liked WW so I can’t count that as a mistake.
          9. Hyrule Warrior, GBA VC, NES Remix. Okay they might not be big games that you’re thinking of but they still announced them.
          10. There were more than 2 games, just probably only 2 games you were interested in.
          11. I’m sorry, I guess Iwata needs to go because your grandma doesn’t like him?
          12. Eh, I agree on DK, but NSMBU and LU were good and was a good start for Wii U. It only seems bad because WIi U did get way too many 2D platformers plus it’s the simplest genre for new indie developers to make.
          13. I don’t know about that…
          14. I think Wii U version should come first as well, but I see good reasons for doing Wii U after 3DS. Currently we don’t know much about the Wii U version, they could be hiding something that makes it really worth while to buy the Wii U version. Sakurai is in charge of that one, so I don’t think that can be counted as Iwata’s mistake.
          15. I… have nothing… but technically Reggie did that not Iwata… but that was pretty bad…
          16. Lowering sales expectations isn’t lying, if anything it’s closer to taking responsibility. Instead of continuing with the impossible expectations and lie to everyone that it’s doing great, they lowered the numbers to be more realistic. I don’t see how that’s lying.

        • SolarGalaxa

You forgot the number one reason: The damn name! “Wii HD” would have been better, and would’ve let even the dumbest consumers know that it was “Wii in HD”, and thus a new console.

          • Rinslowe

I think calling it RINSLOWE would have been just the greatest-est. But it’s good enough that I named my Wii U Rinslowe anyway a-hem….

          • Magnus Eriksson

Had they commercialed it good it wouldnt matter.

          • Commander Raichu

shouldve have called it the nintendo 128 and advertised it a lot more with no game droughts

        • Commander Raichu

im just gonna point it out there itll be so funny if valve announces half life 3 for wii u only at e3 i will break up in laughs XD

        • Capt. Smoker

hmmmmmmmm, yep, can’t argue with that, right on the money as always Magnus

      • jrob23

sorry but that is fanboyish. I get when mistakes are made. However, when you make a mistake, acknowledge it, then proceed to make the same mistake again..it tells me you are full of shit or inept. People can point to the Wii as some beacon of success and it was. However, considering it sold as many as it did, the support the last two years was dismal. And they stopped marketing for it after the third year. The Wii U minus the gamepad probably needed to come out in 2010. I dunno, I feel he gets a pass because the wii caught on as a fad for millions. I love the wii but they allowed Nintendo to earn the kiddy machine title and that has prevented many current gamers from trying the Wii U

        • Commander Raichu

the thing is there not fixing there mistakes reggie said no more game droughts but we got a 3 months one! theyreally need to get there act together or this will be there worse selling consel EVER(not counting the it who shall not be named)!

          • Yen

Game droughts are opinionated though. I never felt a game drought because the games they did release fits in my interest zone. But for people that those games don’t appeal to, it’s a drought. I can argue that PS4/X-One has a drought right now because it has no games that interest me yet, but if I said they had no games that wouldn’t be fair would it?

        • Yen

It’s funny how no one can support/defend Nintendo on this site without being named a “fanboy” even though this is suppose to be a site about Wii U. I don’t think it’s anymore fanboyish to see good in Iwata than it is haterish to hate him.

Wii U has been out for ONE year and a half now. They did bad the first FULL year, acknowledged it, and now we’ll see this year if they can fix it. Yes they’ve gone through two fiscal years but the first one was only a few months and that one actually wasn’t too bad, though declining. Also marketing does exist, I see it in places and sites I visit, but I frequent places game related. They do need to improve their strategy to get the places that can appeal to new buyers.

Wii’s success actually hurts Wii U more than it’d help imo especially because some consumers don’t (didn’t?) understand the difference between the two. That means that the majority of the 100M install base are less likely to buy a Wii U because why upgrade when the old one still works? Or when they don’t even know it’s a new console? Wii didn’t earn Nintendo the “kiddy machine” title, PS and Xbox fans were labeling it as such since the Gamecube.

          • jrob23

When the 3ds came out with a lack of games and marketing, Iwata vowed to not repeat the same mistakes with the Wii U. Well, they did. They then claimed there wouldn’t be another game drought like we saw early 2013. Well, there is. They keep saying they need to focus on making the gamepad more integral to the experience and then they release DKTF (after delaying) and that didn’t and early reports are that Mario Kart won’t either. They kept Wiis on shelves for too long. They came out with the wii mini which is pretty dumb. There hasn’t been much done right since the Wii U launch and you have to ask yourself if you want him continuing to fail when you have huge opportunities like E3 coming up.
It’s fanboyish to defend Iwata where the Wii U is concerned. He is the captain of the ship and from the name, the marketing, the game releases, 3rd party support, etc , he is ultimately responsible for the failures. Mario Kart is out next month and there should commercials, ads, and promos everywhere and I see barely a mention except for gaming sites.

          • Yen

These things take time. Yea they said they’re going to change things, but these things aren’t something you can change in just a few months. They promised better gamepad integration to the experience, but it’ll take time to develop those. I don’t think it’s too late to pass judgement until I see what they have for E3.

They kept Wiis on the shelf for too long? Are you kidding me? PS3s are still getting better games than PS4. PSP games are still being made 2+ years after the Vita is released! Yea the Wii mini was stupid, but that was more them trying to get rid of inventory from selling those in Canada than anything else. I never said they’re not making mistakes, all I’m arguing is that they’ve done some good as well. I’m not saying I want to watch him fail more I’m saying I think he can pull it back like the 3DS did. If he can’t then yes, probably need to bring in some new management and give them a chance. But I personally think stepping down after making mistakes is taking the easy way out and him staying there, being bitched at by fans, trying one more time to change things, I think that is more responsible. I don’t even know if he can do it! I just think it’s commendable and is one of the things being done right under all those mistakes.

Label me if you want but I don’t think it’s fanboyish to defend Iwata or the Wii U for the positives they do have. PS3, Vita, 3DS, all got a ton of shit in the beginning as well and they turned it around. If the rest of this year doesn’t show a sign of turning things around then I wouldn’t really care if you want to hate on it and Iwata.

          • Rinslowe

“When the 3ds came out with a lack of games and marketing, Iwata vowed to not repeat the same mistakes with the Wii U. ”

            Sorry to jump in…
But in that sentence is not only the truth, but the truth that 3DS was same as Wii U is now. That’s not to imply absolutely both platforms will follow a similar path to success, if at all for Wii U. But it does give credit to Iwata’s leadership, as Wii was not his only successful platform. Like it or no. And it is then safe to assume where he gets his hope for turning the situation around.
The guy deserves that chance. And lets all wait and see how they address the myriad of issues – withing this year.
If we get to Dec end 2014 and we still haven’t seen Smash or X. Then my confidence in that part of the issue will plummet. And if new titles aren’t revealed + released in quick succession moving into Q1 2015, then I’m going to be right along side some of the posters here that think Wii U is likely to be a lost cause in the long run.
            But it’s not there yet…

          • jrob23

seems like you are glossing over his repeating the same mistake. Whether the Wii U catches fire or not, the last 18 months have been pretty bad and in large part to him making the same mistakes he vowed not to make.

          • Rinslowe

Trust me, I’m not glossing over Iwata’s mistakes in that comment. Lol dude.
I agree with the verdict on the guys leadership thus far. But I also believe he has his chance to make it right.
Whether he achieves that change or not is not something I’m going to speculate…

      • Rinslowe

You have a decent point, I think.

Iwata’s got 99 problems but the Wii ain’t one!
Neither is the Gamecube (profitable), GBA, DS, “3DS”….

He has enough accolades in his favour (as much as issues created), to at least provide the guy with the option to outline and execute a suitable plan. And leaving now would just hand those issues to another persons lap. And likely the cycle would just continue and gather momentum.
It’s because in reality it’s a juggling act. It’s not just Iwata that is influencing company policies, although ultimately he will be accountable either way. Have you seen the shareholders crying out for a thousand different paths??? Headless fckn chickens those chaps. I believe Nintendo needs to clean house in the investment side of the business. And keep those that are more in line with the companies vision for the future. Then as other people have said, they should open the purse and stop being so damn stingy and all financial apocalyptic. Buy up a few more studios. Start taking global marketing seriously and utilise their directs in infinitely more effective ways…

    • WiiUPS4

To a point i can agree but to be happy nintendo is doing bad is not cool man
I could say the same about the Vita or the xbox one they are getting what they deserved but anyways just my two cents

      • Magnus Eriksson

Doing bad means they either have to fix it or going under. I want them to fix it, but if they chose to go under – they deserve it.

        • WiiUPS4

I disagree they are what made gaming and i will still support them but iwata needs to go

          • Magnus Eriksson

If they didnt do bad now, they would not know that they had to do something. Now they know that, but answers by doing nothing. Thats a sign of bad leadership.

          • WiiUPS4

            True but time will tell

          • Commander Raichu

well its true they need change(like now) but we need competition and we will never see a nintendo game ever again since they did say t will never make there ips 3rd party so we need them to stay

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Well, Atari is what made gaming popular technically, but Nintendo made it popular again after the crash in ’83. Though, it’s good that they screwed up in this case, cause maybe now Iwata will do something and fix the issues that Nintendo and Wii U have, which would be their image.

          • Commander Raichu

make sakouri leader all they need to do then let the
            ideas flow in :D

  • WiiUPS4

Who really cares if the vita got top spot the 3ds have over 40 million sold ..Not a threat to nintendo trust me wish i could say the same for the Wii U..:(

          • Commander Raichu

            lies sony will announce NOW!
            or they die

  • nonscpo

While its good to see the vita take the top spot the reality is that If you combine the number of both 3DS’s then the vita comes in second even with the VitaTv.

    • oontz

What difference does it make, the truth is Sony has 5 devices selling every week and Nintendo has 3. Sony is moving a lot more hardware in Japan then Nintendo. That’s the BIG picture.

      • Rinslowe

Actually that’s NOT the big picture. The big picture would be to also include the financial impact each product and software sale has on each respective company.
Then to combine both consumer perception/ popularity/ sales figures together with how much each company is making off of each sale…

        I know, I know…
        Totally missed the point…

        • oontz

          Okay…
“That’s PART of the BIG picture”
          :P

          • Capt. Smoker
          • Rinslowe

Why did I not see that before????????
            That’s it!!!

      • nonscpo

The industry doesnt work that way, remeber its the razor and blade approach. they sell the hardware at a loss and make their money on software sales.

        • Rinslowe

This is typically true. MS and Nintendo probably have a handle on their hardware revenue projections at this moment, due to their respective price levels. And despite the price reductions, Wii U won’t be making a huge loss on each system sold…
Sony is the odd man out really again this time. Their losses are two thirds that of the PS3. Still too high. I don’t think that the initial launch period sales will have made a big impact in that area either. They will still need a lot more hardware/ software sales and lowering costs of components before PS4 is profitable.

  • Akatosh

Bet Titanfall did well because it sounds like Attack on Titan.

  • ETeach

Crayon Shin-Chan is still relevant in Japan? Huh…

  • Mario

Is it me? Or are consoles on a decline over Japan? 0_0

  • ben

Nothing shocking about these figures. This week was the start of the school year, parents have to pay out a lot for uniforms, bags, books and cram school. Also, the consumption tax was increased by 8% so a wii u went up in price by $30.
What’s more, Nintendo is ending it’s current range of packs. You can only get a wii u sports, which nobody wants.

    • matthew garcia

Uh wii u has been doing bad every week except for last week.

      • ben

Nope, it sold 13,000 two weeks ago. The last week of the old bundle and price. Now people are waiting for Mario kart.

        • matthew garcia

2 weeks of not that great of sales while every week has been around 8000. Not good man. It’s not doin good in europe or America neither

          • ben

Mariokart will sell a million plus consoles and Smash has the record for most games sold in a week.
Nothing to worry about as a wii u owner.

  • au8277

Man, consoles are dying with labored breath and blood pouring from the mouth in Japan. Doubt there’s another cycle there unless something REALLY shakes gaming up.

  • Rinslowe

    Two words… Toothbrush bro!
    Good choice in console, though.
    :)

Yep those slightly declining no’s are predictable as people start to hold back in wait for….
    Pure Chess!
No Mario Kart 8 of course…
Happens every time in Japan. They’re like clockwork.

  • Gabe Hoffman

The decrease was likely due to the new consumer tax that was just went into effect

    • Daniel Gonzalez

If that’s true, then wouldn’t PS4 and Vita take a noticeable dip too? Doubt the tax increase had anything to do with it this time.

      • Gabe Hoffman

PS4 has been dropping significantly in the past few weeks

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Why hasn’t it taken another big dip then? Can’t blame the tax increase on this one.

      • Commander Raichu

        well its still new :P

  • readypembroke

Man that game store looks cooler than GameStop!!!

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Dunno. GameStops in our area look quite nice and put some work into decorating, but the Japanese do take a lot of time on theirs. If only the West put in some more effort.

  • Commander Raichu

people do we really need to care about sales
if you look at it it might be nice if they were better but its not like wii u is selling 0 units?
i believe more and more sales leaks ignite the haters and the fanboys but the thing is
we can be more than that by playing on our consel of choice and not be caring about this
sales are important for investors and the company but it doesnt affect out lives
i end in saying that we dont need to hate or moan about sales they wont change our lives

    • oontz

“people do we really need to care about sales”

If the wiiu was the number one selling console… you would care.

“sales are important for investors and the company but it doesnt affect out lives”

Couldn’t be more wrong. Sales = install base…. install base = more game development/releases. Which means more gaming experiences for you to enjoy in your life.

      • Rinslowe

“If the wiiu was the number one selling console… you would care.”

You assume to know what another poster cares about? At least he had the decency to ask the question…

“Couldn’t be more wrong. Sales = install base…. install base = more game development/releases”

Actually “couldn’t be more wrong” is a false statement. He’s partially correct. And so are you in a way…
Unfortunately it was Nintendo themselves who had proven that your comment doesn’t hold true exactly, as the Wii suffered from less game development/ third party support (shovel ware aside), with the largest install base.

        Oh and…
        I know…
I “totally missed the point”… lol

        • oontz

          Always a joy Rinslowe… always a joy.

          • Rinslowe

            Haha…
            It’s mutual. But never against…. never against…

          • Commander Raichu

            hehe

      • Commander Raichu

        yeah good point

      • Commander Raichu

im actually trying to play as much mkwii as possible since onlines gonna go down

        • great deku tree

when does it go down again?

          • Commander Raichu

may 27(same day as watch dogs) i think

  • Carlos Webster

Well, at least Titanfail is selling horribly there.

  • SP-937-215

    That guy’s face, lol. CHEEEEEEESE!!!

  • sumyungboii

They’re not a couple, that is snorlax and his trainer..
