Japanese sales – 3DS back on top, Wii U sees nice boost

wii_u_launch_japan-21

After a few months of losing its top spot to the PS4 and then strangely enough, the PS Vita, the Nintendo 3DS finds itself back at the top of the charts for Japan. Mario party: Island Tour released last week in the region and continues to have strong sales, while Yokai Watch holds its position in the charts. Just like last week several new PS Vita releases pump up the hardware side of things for Sony, giving Nintendo some stiff competition in terms of software sales.

Despite no new software this week the Wii U saw a nice jump of nearly 4k sales, actually finishing out the week above 10k for the first time in a long time. As always, this week’s numbers are reported first, followed by last week’s numbers in parentheses. These comparisons are only week to week, not a look at overall sales for this year or the lifetime of the product.

    Dat PS4 drop

    • Ducked

That’s only because the PS4 has no games to appeal to Japanese gamers. Deep Down was delayed, and the big JRPG’s are months away.

      • Rick van der Linde

Does it have any games at all? I was going to buy one for BF4, but after another (BF3 anyone?) major let down I’ve decided to wait.

        • Ducked

inFamous Second Son, KillZone Shadowfall, Resogun…

        • Yousif Alromaithi

PS4 is awesome when you have a chance I say summer or after that. Just make it this year.

      • Yousif Alromaithi

No ps4 JRPG coming this year not that I am aware of . Maybe next year let us see Tokyo Game Show what it has to offer.

        • Ducked

Not really in 2014. Final Fantasy XV is suppose to be out in 2014. But it looks as Deep Down, and Kingdom Hearts III won’t release until 2015.

But KH3 and FFXV will be huge system sellers in Japan. Japanese gamers have been waiting eight years for them. So has the rest of the world.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Yep they will be out in Japan this year but don’t keep your hopes high I expect it come out internationally next year.

  • Aleksandar Antonijevic

Yay! My favorite company is rising to the top!

    • oontz

      Your favorite company is sony?

  • Miguel Angel Barrueta Hernánde

i do not own nintendo stock shares or anything like that, but im actually glad!

  • starwars360

Mario Kart 8 soon. Wii U will see massive sales up. :):):)

    • Ducked

Just a little over a month away!

      • starwars360

        Yeah cannot wait!!! :):):)

        • Ducked

          Got my copy pre-ordered

          • starwars360

Me same I got preordered MK 8′s special edition in shopto.net. Special Edition got blue shell statue with MK 8 copy.

            Where you preordered from? :D

          • Ducked

Pre-ordered mine from GameStop. I live in the US, and sadly Mario Kart 8 doesn’t have any pre-order bonuses here :(

          • Dark-Link73

Don’t give up hope. The last few special bundles by Nintendo haven’t been announced until about a month before release. I have my fingers crossed. ;-)

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

            amazon :(

          • Ernie Sanguyo

I want to pre order already but I’m still waiting if North America is getting a special edition too. I really hope MK8 gets a bundle with figurine.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

I pre ordered on amazon sucks no special edition like Europe damn you Nintendo America.

        • Carlos Webster

          Me neither.

      • greengecko007

        Just under two months away*.

    • greengecko007

Realistically, these sales increases are probably the result of people buying Wii U’s and preparing for Mario Kart 8. Unless Nintendo does a Mario Kart 8 and Wii U bundle, I don’t see a massive sales increase happening. I would love to be wrong though.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Diehards tend to be over confident. It’s the perfect way to set yourself up for disappointment when things don’t happen the way we expected it.

        • oontz

Like Nintendo sitting back thinking the wiiu would sell on the wii name alone. Nothing in life is a sure bet. Especially in selling products to the world.

      • Jump’nShootMan

You might be right. Personally, I think Nintendo would be dumb not to do a MK8 bundle. If it’s supposed to be your system seller…. put it in the box with your system. Nintendo has plenty of other good 1st party games out that they can make the extra $60 on after the fact.

        • greengecko007

Exactly. Bundle Mario Kart 8 with the Wii U to drive up the install base, and give other titles like Bayonetta 2 and Smash a larger install base to work with.

          • Carlos Coronado

They maybe want to bundle it with Super Smash Bros.

    • FlashFan207

      CanNOT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!

    • Capt. Smoker

      The fightback is on!

  • Ducked

3DS is selling very nice. With 3DS and 3DS LL combined for 64,632 sales.
I’m surprised Wii U got a decent jump for once, selling 13,026 with no new software to boost it.

The Vita is still selling high. I’m not surprised one bit that PS4 sales are dropping, there’s no games to appeal to the Japanese crowd right now.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Pretty much. PS4 will probably struggle early on, but pick up next year when there’s a better flow of games that appeal to the Japanese. Vita and 3DS will continue selling better than their console counterparts.

      • Ducked

Agreed. PS4 has only been in Japan for less than two months. The big guns in software are some months away.

  • Kriffix

hmm, on the 1st there was a rise in tax here which explains the sudden increase in sales this week. I doubt it’ll carry through to next week.

Hopefully we’ll see the longterm boosts that we want to see in the weeks following the release of MK8!

    • Zuxs13

If that is the case then the PS4 is really not wanted.

      • Ducked

*sneezes* Sorry I’m allergic to fanboy comments…

        • Zuxs13

What is “fanboy” about that? If the taxes going up yesterday caused every console last week to surge by 20-30+%, then why did the PS4 drop 34%? Even the 360 increased!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Sales were expected to decrease. Lol. Not even Wii U is up past the 20k mark. The reason PS4 is struggling there now, is due to lack of games that appeal to the Japanese. It probably won’t change until games like KH3 or FF XV release there. Then you can expect things to pick up. To say it’s not wanted, is rather an assumption, which you’re entitled to, but I do agree with Ducked that it does come off as fanboyish a bit.

By your logic, that would mean that Wii U wasn’t wanted because it had a hard time staying above 10k. Correct? Considering that handhelds are popular in Japan, that would tell me that consoles aren’t too wanted in that region. I’d say that’s a fair perspective.

          • Zuxs13

Its simply really. Kriffix stated that the sharp rise in sales had to do with the tax changing which occurred they day after these sales were recorded. Since the PS4 was the only console on the list to drop, there is a clear issue there. What is so fan boy about that?

The Vita saw a sharp rise i never said the Vita Sucks! I was simply point out the fact the PS4 took the only sale drop that week. If you don’t see that as a correlation than id say you are the fanboy..

          • Daniel Gonzalez

A drop doesn’t mean that the PS4 isn’t wanted. Lol. It means that less people bought it. If it wasn’t wanted, then it would have zero sales. I think you mean that less people want it after the launch. Which is expected since there aren’t many games that Japanese gamers want for it. Sorry my friend, but that’s not being a fanboy at all. That’s being fair and calling it like it is. Wii U sales are up I would say due to what Kriffix said.

Difference between the Wii U and PS4, is that Wii U has games that appeal to enough gamers in that region, so that wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. If you can’t see that as a correlation, then I’d say it’s the simple pot calling the kettle black routine.

          • Nothing5555

I would also add the reason why the PS4 is struggling now is partly due to the handheld consoles.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I pointed that out in another comment, but that is indeed correct. Japanese people are more busy than us westerners and are always on the go. Handhelds fit their lifestyle perfectly, so consoles tend to get looked over.

          • Nothing5555

Actually now that I think of it, Microsoft would have better luck releasing a handheld console in Japan than the Xbox ONE. Granted they would need some JRPGs, a dynasty warriors like action game, and a bunch of dating simulators/Idol makers. Hmmm Xbox live plus a dating simulator, may allow the neets to meet other people in real life. Who am I kidding they’d just meet other guys.

          • Ducked

I think Daniel Gonzalez’s comment sums it all up

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I get the point of his comment, but saying a console isn’t wanted when it clearly shows sales, makes zero sense. Yes, it dropped, but a drop doesn’t indicate people don’t want it. It means there isn’t enough people buying it. If I said right now or even before that Wii U isn’t wanted(minus the times I say it to annoy fanboys), that would sound pretty comical. I love the double standards on this site. I can’t say I don’t get amused by the crazy comments. ;P

          • Ducked

If there’s a single con on a system without “Nintendo” in front of it, then then it becomes worthless. Haha, yeah I enjoy reading fanboy comments as well, its full of opposites.

          • Yen

You realize there are people that consider Nintendo consoles “worthless” right? There are people that think that a console that appeals more to kids or doesn’t have enough FPS experience isn’t a good gaming console. What you said goes both ways.

          • Yen

You saying it to annoy “fanboys” doesn’t change the fact that you said it. You’re contributing to the double standards as much as any other fanboys you’re just doing it against instead of for Nintendo.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I have no loyalty to any company. I love to point out fanboy logic and I find it funny when they get upset because they can’t handle a comment. You only strengthen my point. Thank you. :P

          • Yen

“I believe I pointed that out long ago. So you’re preaching to the choir. My beliefs still stand regardless.”

Okay? I never said you didn’t. It’s just a fact.

“Sort of what you did just now? Noted. Difference is, I’m not for any company nor hold any loyalty.”

I’m sorry that no company has made anything worthy of your loyalty. I don’t really care what you like or don’t like. I’m not going to deny having had a double standard with companies that I’m not impressed with. I only pointed out that you clearly have one against the Wii U. You have no trouble laughing at Nintendo fanboys but defend PS4 ones even in similar situations. Yea yea you’re doing it to piss off fanboys I get it. I never said you needed to comment blindly, but you seem to have a preference for blindly attacking anyone saying anything for Nintendo. Yes it does go both ways, fanboys blindly praising Nintendo, PS, Xbox, or anything, and then there’s haters that blindly attacks Nintendo, PS, Xbox, or anything they want to make themselves feel superior or justified. You can justify it however you want, but in the end you’re just doing the same. Thank YOU for proving my point. I’m sure your day is already lovely with all the fanboys you piss off each day so I don’t need to wish you one. :D

          • oontz

“I’m sorry that no company has made anything worthy of your loyalty.”

Why would someone want to be loyal to a material product? Think about what you’re implying. Companies only care about one thing… Profit.

Loyalty has nothing to do with material goods.

          • Yen

You’re right. You should always judge the product and do research before you buy it. I love the Wii U, but I’d still laugh at anyone that complains that their Wii U sat there collecting dust. They bought it without thinking it through. There are PS4 fans that did and Xbox One fans too. I didn’t mean loyalty as in you need to blindly buy everything they make, but well, take this for example. I have an Android phone. My next phone will probably be an Android phone. Android phones have worked well for everything I need it for so I never see a reason to switch to say an iPhone or Windows Phone. That’s my loyalty to Android phones, I know that if I need a new phone, I won’t go wrong getting an Android. Gaming wise, maybe you really like Mass Effect. If they announce a new Mass Effect game, you get it day one because you liked the previous games of the series. That’s the type of loyalty I meant. There’s a difference between blindly wanting anything a company makes and knowing the company will make something you want and worth your money.

TL:DR, I just said it as a response to “I’m not for any company nor hold any loyalty.” I don’t really care if he is loyal to any company or not.

          • oontz

” I’d still laugh at anyone that complains that their Wii U sat there collecting dust. They bought it without thinking it through.”

Many people though bought a wiiu on Day one because of Nintendo’s promises, which they failed to make a reality. Day one owners were burned by one of the worst year one release schedules for any home console.

          • Yen

Well, I played my Wii U near daily. If these people didn’t know how to enjoy their Wii U then it’s their problem. Also I personally think the PS3 had a worse first year. But that’s just me.

          • Zuxs13

Worst year one releases schedules? If you are comparing 3rd party releases you might have a case for that. As far as 1st/2nd party releases the Wii U had one less 1st party release than the PS3 did last year, which had a fantastic year. So its all in perspective on that one.

          • oontz

I am comparing all releases. Consoles can’t survive on first party alone, as we are finding out.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Exactly. Being loyal to a company that only wants your money, is rather foolish. Fanboys tend to think that Nintendo cares for them so deeply. If they cared so much, then why do they charge you money? The answer is simple. Your money means more than your loyalty. If Nintendo fanboys or even fanboys in general thought otherwise, then they certainly are blind. As much as I love Sony, I know my money matters more to them. That’s fine, because that’s business, and that’s the trade off. ;)

        • Zuxs13

and this isnt a fan boy comment?

“That’s only because the PS4 has no games to appeal to Japanese gamers.
Deep Down was delayed, and the big JRPG’s are months away.”…..

          • Ducked

Nope, its a fact that Japanese gamers like JRPG’s. You know because they’re called Japanese Role Playing Games. And big Japanese publishers like Square are supporting it.

I will say Monolith X and Fire Emblem x Shin Megami Tensai will boost Wii U sales dramitcally. But beyond 2014, I see the PS4 ahead.

          • Zuxs13

But you basically implied the PS4 wasn’t wanted as well. It doesn’t have JRPGs on it, there fore no one bought it (despite the impending tax hike) and therefore it wasn’t wanted. So again how am Is my comment “fanboy’ and your is not?

We both agree it doesn’t have games, especially JRPGs, so it isn’t wanted.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

If it wasn’t wanted Zuxs, then it would have zero sales. Apparently, there are people who want it. It’s just not as appealing to the majority of Japanese gamers. Not being wanted is a bit dramatic.

          • matthew garcia

Ps4 just crossed 7 million world wide sales. There destroying everyone

          • Zuxs13

Never said anything about the PS4 doing bad.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

You didn’t have to. Lol. Saying that it’s not wanted pretty much means in your case that it’s doing bad.

          • Zuxs13

no it doesn’t As you stated below less people bought it, meaning less people wanted it. But why is it the only console dropping in sales in a week when all the others are increasing, even ones with no games and are “less wanted” than the PS4. You are bound and determined to defend the PS4 but no one is bashing it, its a simple question and lack of games doesn’t fit with the trend that happened in this week.

          • Carlos Webster

More like an offensive, generalization statement. Just because someone is Japanese, that does NOT mean that they like JRPGs . Don’t generalize.

          • oontz

That’s not a fanboy comment, it’s a realistic look at the current situation.

        • andrewjcole

This website must be hazardous to your health.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

To anyone’s for that matter. I upvoted you so you’re not stuck with three 6′s. That could be hazardous too. ;P

      • oontz

Hmmm, it seems the ps4 still outsold the wiiu. Not sure what numbers you’re reading.

        • Zuxs13

Did i say anything about the Wii U or compare the PS4 numbers to anything? No i was simply pointing out the fact that the PS4 was the only console to drop in sales. There is clearly a problem there.

          • Guest

So is the Wii U flip flopping in sales in recent weeks. I take it that wasn’t a problem before?

          • Zuxs13

Huh? what does the Wii U increasing two weeks ago have to do with the PS4 being the only console to drop this week?

          • oontz

Yet it still outsold the wiiu. So yes there is clearly a problem there.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t think it should be a surprise that PS4 is doing poor right now with lack of games at the moment. Wii U with it’s larger library, barely stays above 10k in any given week. While PS4 is struggling in Japan, it’s doing far better worldwide than Wii U. Sony has some issues, but Nintendo’s are more severe. That’s how I see it anyways.

          • Zuxs13

PS4 is doing great here (US) and Europe for sure. Though its surprising still because there really hasn’t been a great deal of games on the PS4 either. Thats why i haven’t bought one yet.

The Wii U is a mess when it comes to sales but it has games, some great ones too, it just doesn’t have enough of the broad based western 3rd party games that will appeal to the broader audience to give it better sales.

          • oontz

I also see it that way. With the lack of PS4 software geared towards Japan… I am surprised it’s selling as well as it is.

          • Zuxs13

it out sold a lot of systems, so what. It still dropped 34% in a week where every single system increased by 20-30% but you don’t see an issue there?

          • oontz

No, because it STILL outsold other home consoles. As a company it looks like Sony is dominating the console charts.

    • ben

They are also selling off the last of the Mario packs.People who want that pack have to buy now or they will only be able to get the wii u sports pack, when Mariokart releases.

  • CEObrainz

To be expected for the 3DS, its almost ruling the handheld market with an iron-fist. Expect to see more jumps in sales when games such as Smash come out for it.

  • Ryan F

I’ve heard there was a national sales tax that is just about ready to be implemented. People may have decided to make major purchases, like a new console, ahead of the new tax.

    • Kriffix

Yep, since the 1st of this month.

      • Chris

Yep, some people got their checks. Just sayin’

    • Ducked

Should have known there was a catch..

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Certainly would explain the boost in sales. Guess we’ll see what next week shows us.

      • Carlos Webster

Wait, it’s in Japan and not the US?

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Yep but their were new games on 3ds or Wii U. Only new games for Vita.

      • Nothing5555

Is it me or are the new vita games dating simulators?

        • Yousif Alromaithi

          Lol.

      • Andrew Hoback

nope, one of the 3ds games say new

        • Yousif Alromaithi

Funny The Vita game beat it lol.

    • Jon

yet if that was really the reason, why didn’t the PS4 jump? if you waited until after tax increase, you’d end up paying more than any other console due to it having the largest difference.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Because PS4 doesn’t have many games that Japanese gamers want. Pretty simple really. That won’t change until next year at the very least.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Wonder if Nintendo are running a campaign in Japan atm? It did better both this and last week.

    • Kriffix

Read my comment below. There is a good reason but given the nature of it, it won’t last.. Should’t see any sustainable boosts until MK8

  • anthony optimo

Get used to seeing this trend of rising hardware sales for the Wii U.

  • insomniac

whats up with the 2ds? 3ds and 3ds XL are represented individually, combined being 64,632! but where is the 2ds? they have it there right? maybe not selling enough to register?

    • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

      They don’t have it. (2ds)

      • insomniac

        unfortunate for them

        • Kriffix

Why? Over here we figured out we can achieve the same effect by turning down the slider.

          • insomniac

probably never played one huh? i like them

          • Kriffix

Admittedly, no, I haven’t. What do you like about it?

  • Yousif Alromaithi

It is only mater of time Nintendo is back in top.

    • D.M.T

Nintendo is already on top. 3DS is number 1

      • Yousif Alromaithi

Yep I meant for the consoles. Nintendo was always on top for handhelds.

  • james

Nice looking store, and you dont have to hunt down a sales associate to grab a fraking game off the shelf…

  • LukeMM95

Well Playstation is the Wii U’s only real competition in Japan. I’m guessing with Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Bayonetta and X coming out this year, Japanese gamers are finally starting to get interested in the console.

    • Ducked

Did Microsoft cancel Xbox One release in Japan or something?

      • LukeMM95

Xbox isn’t a successful brand in Japan.

        • Ducked

I know that, but Microsoft said they’d release it in Japan. But they’ve been silent.

        • crocodileman94

Pretty much like Nintendo in UK.

      • Yousif Alromaithi

        They will first year lol.

      • Jon

last I heard they are still planning on releasing it there. Maybe they are hoping the PS4 hype will die down and with Mario Kart 8 and smash, the Wii U hype as well. But it is obvious they are taking their time and not in a rush to get to to a region where it won’t do well anyway.

      • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

They’re procrastinanting. It turns out they will release the Xbox One in Japan in September.

Well, with MK8 and Super Smash Bros. Coming out, I expect to see the Wii U at the top of the list.

  • Josie the Sketcher

Excellent news for Nintendo! I look at the games of both 3DS and Vita and seriously I find the game library on the 3DS much more appealing. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is my most played title as I play it for 40 minutes everyday.

PS Vita are starting to get some nice indie games though but most of them you get on PS4 as well. Kinda funny that it’s still topping the PS4 but a lot of the games don’t interest the Japanese which I’m not surprised. Most games seem!to be aimed towards western audiences at the moment. Can’t wait for MK8!

  • Dark-Link73

Damn! 3D LL almost doubled the sales from the month before! It’s nice to see the Wii U back on the 5-digit sale figures. The PS4 went down though. I’m really curious to see the PS4 numbers after its first year. Looks so far that projections might be right and the Wii U might sell better in Japan than the PS4.

I don’t care if it does or not (it’d be nice if it did though), I just want games! :-D

“Looks so far that projections might be right and the Wii U might sell better in Japan than the PS4.”

For that to happen to Wii U would need to be outselling the PS4, not the other way around. Wii U sales increasing is always good though.

      • Suraj Alexander

By projections he meant later on. Wii U sales are increasing and ps4 sales are decreasing so wii u might end up selling more than ps4 in japan.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

That’s a maybe. When titles like KH3, FFXV and others like it, expect PS4 sales to start boosting up again. Also keep in mind, PS4 is much newer than Wii U, so it had a head start. I believe it’s going to be a tough race a few years down the line.

      • Dark-Link73

According to this site and other media outlets, the Wii U IS outselling the PS4 in Japan. The sales of the Wii U around this time a year ago are higher than the sales of the PS4 today. That’s why I also mention my curiosity of seeing the sales of the PS4 a year from now and compare them to Wii U sales of today.

        • oontz

          Key point “a year ago”

          • Dark-Link73

Exactly! That is the key point. One can’t compare the current sales of a 16 month-old console vs. the current sales of a new console still in its launch window. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. That’s why financial trackers and professional media outlets, when comparing the PS4 sales vs. Wii U sales, use the Wii U’s launch period sales to compare against the PS4 current lunch period sales.

  • C4

The Wii U Logo looks better on black.

  • thedeciderU

    excited for mario kart 8

  • andrewjcole

    Oh, xbox…

  • Justin Gray

At what point does everyone in Japan own a 3DS?

    • Yen

When half of them starts buying their second or third.

  • janco tianno

Videogames, doesn’t matter if it is Wii U or PS4 or Xbox One are not selling like few years ago.

Anyway, WHY, WHY they insist to put Xbox 360 in the japanese list ? Honestly, I think that classical consoles like NES, Gameboy Classic, Game Gear and Sega Genesis are selling more than 300 units in the gray market. (Ok j/k, I know it is about new consoles)

    • oontz

The gaming market as a whole is growing, but the Japanese market does seem to be shrinking with every year.

  • LordiMcKill

Has anyone noticed that, despite being a new console, the PS4 sales are dropping considerably down each week?

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Yes. That may be because, it doesn’t have many games that appeal to the Japanese. That tends to make sales drop over time. You are almost correct. As sales did go up one week. However, it’s doing great in North America and Europe, so the struggle in Japan, is minimal. When more JRPGs release in Japan, sales will get better.

      • oontz

Exactly, no Japanese games results in low Japanese sales. Even though it’s still outselling the wiiu.

  • Rinslowe

Wii U has been selling consistently since late last year. Seems that there is some perceived value in the console for the Japanese, despite slow games releases.
There was a few months in 2013 where that figure included both US and Japanese sales together almost…
Nintendo has major challenges in the coming months to deliver on promises made. But this at least is a somewhat healthy sign.
I’m certain MK 8 will stimulate a welcome increase in sales. Just hope that, Smash, Bayo 2, X, Fast Racing Neo, Project Cars and Watchdogs are released in timely fashion after each other following Kart for the titles that have my interest on the platform for 2014… Two of which though from third party will be PC first.
The problems with Wii U in the long term are many. Ninty needs to seriously up their game to even begin addressing them all. But their confirmed lineup if released correctly can provide them much need breathing room on the operating front at least.

    PS4 is on free fall.

  • oontz

“After a few months of losing its top spot to the PS4″

The ps4 hasn’t even been out in japan for two months, let alone a few months.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

      I love the exaggerated news.

      • oontz

She just can’t help herself… always exaggerated and sensationalized.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

I’m sure the fanboys are okay with it.

  • Colton Kelsey

    THE LENGEND OF ZELDA WIIU!

  • InterTreble

PS4 in Japan is a total flop! 3DS has been king for two years. Every prophet who forecasted the death of Nintendo after the release of PS4 in Japan, now, can only pick a sack on their head, and feel really ashamed!

  • Commander Raichu

I love all this hope and disappointment you people will happen with mario kart 8 in terms of sales
well ill have to break it down to you
    WE WONT KNOW UNTIL LAUNCH!

  • Logan Waltz
