Japanese sales – Slow week for gaming in Japan

Wii U Japan 2

Sales in Japan for this week have been released, showcasing a generally poor week for the country. Yokai Watch has managed to sell more than 1 million units and continues to sell well, at 34k units moved this week. Several new titles were released this week in Japan as well, though they still haven’t broken the sales of Yokai watch.

  • That guy who hates Spike

The 3DS is really getting slower in sales.
When’s the 3DS’ next heavy hitter coming in Japan? Youkai Watch 2 in July?

    • lonewolf

Super smash bros 3ds in summer

      • That guy who hates Spike

        Probably not July
        So…back to Youkai Watch.

        • Ice Climbers

Persona Q in June if I’m not mistaken. Oh and Yoshi’s New Island.

  • lonewolf

Hmm I guess the ps4 sells were all based on hype nothing more

    • WarioForever

      That’s true.

    • jackie

U do realize that ps4 is selling amazingly well all over the world except for japan.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        That’s true.

      • Petri

I think that was the point.
Maybe means Japanese aren’t ones to join a hype train?
Though one part of PS4 success is because how MS f’d up.
Things are looking reverse as they did last generation, but I doubt xbone will pull the PS3′s.

        • jackie

Yeah when ps3 released it was the system that had to many unnecessary features that made it to expensive. U would think Microsoft woud have learned not to go down that path but they did. Still they sold 311000 consoles last month in America which isnt bad

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Only big mistake Sony made with the PS3 was introducing Blu Ray. It was expensive and not many developers wanted to figure out the complex hardware. Though, the good exclusives that Sony offered eventually lured third parties to the console and changed its fate. Total reversal this time around. Of course, that’s Microsoft’s fault for attempting to DRM their new console. Sony was smart to let them have at it and only make them look better by comparison.

          • jackie

            Thats fa sho

          • Dark-Link73

While I do agree that adding the bluray player to the PS3 was the biggest mistake Sony made for the console (it basically undermined the value of the console by creating the perception that the PS3 was a bluray player that could play games), as a business move in general, it was the best business decision Sony made in the format war because it created a large install base of bluray players early on in the format war, thus giving Sony the early edge over Toshiba.

Sony put all its money in bluray’s success that, if Sony hadn’t done the PS3 a bluray player from the start, Sony might have gone the way of the do do if the would’ve lost the format war.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

True. The double-edged sword is a bitch sometimes. Hard to win in either situation, but it did work out in the end.

          • Rinslowe

And strangely it’s been my go to device for Blu-Ray for years.
Not that there hasn’t been many many gaming hours poured in as well….
But I get your point. Expensive.
GDDR5 and 8GB at last notice is still an expensive choice for Sony this gen as well… They’ve lessened the financial impact this time round. But according to the sale price and cost of components/ assembly/ shipping etc… Only by about a third less than the PS3 ratio.

Sony didn’t really lure 3rd parties though. They paid for exclusives, just like what Ninty needs to do with Wii U right now – IMO.
And of course PS3 received it’s fair share upward of 80% of ports being inferior to Xbox 360, which is also eerily similar circumstances.

          • companyoflosers

i disagree. sony’s biggest mistake with ps3 was an architecture based around the cell processor which made it a nightmare to develop for. it was fine for devs who were exclusive to ps3 once they figured it out but when you are a multiplatform dev and you have to code for every platform, the ps3′s horrible architecture was a huge deterrent. remember how badly supported ps3 was with skyrim and how the game was essentially broken at release?

          • Daniel Gonzalez

True, that was one of it’s drawbacks when it pertains to multiplat games. Though, it’s not much of a problem now. Developers worked around it and is no longer an issue. Of course, it was a big deal when it comes to launches as first time impressions do leave a scar.

      • Rinslowe

U do realise that on either side of the argument, the more you “argue” your respective points… The more your “collective fanboy” is showing…

Lol, to you and all these whacked out “my brand is the best” clowns…

        Just enjoy the games… :)

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Of course. No console will sell that well if it isn’t hyped by having strong marketing. Wii U sure can use some about now.

    • Rinslowe

      It’s actually a banging system….
And totally worth investment if you’re a gamer who loves games. I guess that goes for Xbox One too, but much less so…

Wii U, exactly the same thing… Totally worthwhile console to own, if you love games…

      Lol, these kinds of comments…

      • lonewolf

I know that very well but I guess you didnt understood my point. Well never mind

        • Rinslowe

I understood. But what I don’t understand is how people choose to get caught up in console finger pointing…

          One word.
          Lame.

          • lonewolf

Yeah that is indeed very lame…

  • Magnus Eriksson

Nintendo have become irrelevant in the industry. Theres really not much more to say.

    • triplegamer3K .

No atari is irreverent.Coleco is irrelevant.

The day i go into a walmart, and they have no nintendo stuff at all is when they are irreverent.I mean the best selling console of last year was nintendo’s own 3Ds.

    • Rinslowe

      5000+ irrelevant Japanese people… Oh.
      I’m sure that wasn’t your intention…
      -_-

    • http://exazblog.blogspot.com/ Prince_AKR

      Pfft.

My boy; 3DS have came out with it’s face slamming on the rocks. Look where it is now.
Did you forget the success of both the Wii and the DS, just last generation? Wii U’s sales may not be hot, but the metacritic scores of it’s games sure are; especially the ones that came right out of Nintendo’s house.

      Magnus, seriously. Be real. :/

  • jackie

Just read that gamecube sales at 1 and1/2 years was over 9 million and wii u’s is at 6 million. This could be nintendos worse selling home console ever. I dont count virtual boy cuz it wasnt really a home console to me. Either way this is no way to get prepared for mk8

    • That guy who hates Spike

Virtual Boy wasn’t a home console to begin with.

      • jackie

Thats what I thought to just wasnt sure of anybody else’s opinion

        • Ice Climbers

Virtual Boy was technically a handheld, or at least according to Nintendo.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Technically, it’s really a console. Seeing as the Virtual Boy stood on a tripod rather than using a headstrap so you can wear it on your head and play it on the go with your controller in hand. Not sure what Nintendo was smoking by marketing it as a handheld.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Still Wii U is most like the Virtual Boy. My guess is that people will deny it was a real console ten years from now.

      • jackie

Yeah im sure just to downplay its failure

        • Daniel Gonzalez

You’ll certainly see that here when the next console is around the corner.

  • Capt. Smoker

Jrpgs sell in Japan, not surprised at all to see the Vita on top, how does Nintendo not understand their home soil?, please…. Iwata out.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Yep. Time for him to go back to Hal Labs. Need some new blood running the Big N.

    • J_Joestar

Unless my math has gotten that bad, aren’t 3DS + LL sales total still higher than Vita + TV totals? not by a huge margin or anything, but still edging it out.

      • jackie

Ps4 and vita and ps3 are higher them both 3ds and wii u and wii

        • Capt. Smoker

Aye, 3ds is only popular when games come out for it, if Nintendo had a constant stream of games like the rest, they’d be no different, yet common logic is lost on Nintendo…

          • Daniel Gonzalez

They have consistent releases on the 3DS which keeps sales from dipping. Wii U can use some support like that. Not sure what Nintendo was thinking by spreading releases so far apart. It’s almost like they want it the fail. Kinda like how they’re releasing SSB4 on 3DS first and Wii U in the winter.

          • Capt. Smoker

That’s always been Nintendo’s strategy when marketing landslides, their greedy, and simply, will only half ass the support to get away with it, at least Sony try when they fail.

          • jackie

If they didnt spread the releases out like that nintendo would do good but all of a sudden wouldnt be able to release a game for a whole year. They just simply dont have enough games in development

          • Capt. Smoker

*yawn* excuses…. if your willing to accept they can’t do better with all the money they have in the bank… then I’ll agree, but considering Nintendo fans consistently boast about them being loaded, the richest of the rich, I would have thought it would be insulting to not do more with all that money….

          • jackie

Im not making excuses I say this cuz I know they have enough money to make more games and advertise but they dont. I dont make bullshit excuses for no one.

          • Capt. Smoker

My apologies for misreading the comment, I completely agree with you, the big N are far too greedy.

          • jackie

I mean they all are greedy but with the financial trouble sony is in its amazing how they still give there fans what they want in a console and advertise like pros. Just boggles my mind how nintendo sees there console drowning and wont save it and they have the money to do it. My guess is that they see there future looking like crap and are trying to save up for the upcoming years of trouble. It is greedy that they dont support a console that we all paid 300 or more dollars for. They cant even give us gamecube games wtf!!

          • Mario

Did they even used that in the first place?

          • Capt. Smoker

            Nope lol

        • J_Joestar

not arguing about the home consoles, just that

          3DS + LL (14023 + 5920) > Vita + TV (17905 + 1132)

          • jackie

I know what your saying but no they dont go together there two different sku’s

          • J_Joestar

If that is the case then every instance where a console has released a new SKU should be counted as a different machine.

    • Rinslowe

It has been spoiled. That soil….

      • Capt. Smoker

Nintendo still think the jing jong jappa pappas still play arcade games from the 80s, that’s how out of date the backroom staff are, that’s why they need new blood in the company, if your maim characters don’t consist of mr average, mr obnoxious, miss 14 year old chest to the eye balls and an annoying little kid who calls her an oni chan when she isn’t an oni chan…. the home soil doesn’t buy it, and considering their big markets should be europe and america…. they don’t really understand what those markets like and won’t make an effort to bring exclusive games that appeal to those markets, unlike say Sony…. who dabble in everything and have something for everybody, as good as the old boys at Nintendo are at making games, I’d say retirement at this point wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing.

        • Rinslowe

“Nintendo still think the jing jong jappa pappas still play arcade games from the 80s”

          Brutal just brutal.
          You’re a street fighting Brit for sure…

          • Capt. Smoker

            lololol

    • Shootdatrupee!…

3DS is still ahead of Vita. If you combine both LL and… that normal one…
Edit: I see somebody has already made that point.

  • bistricky

Gaming is not the same. We are definitely entering a period where home gaming is falling out of favor. To the degree that the majority of general gamers are not getting the newest generation consoles and still just enjoying their Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3.

    • jackie

Nah only in japan. In the west home consoles are breaking sales records. Ps4 sold 1 million home consoles on day 1. Thats a record

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Falling out of favor in Japan, yes. Most Japanese are on the go type of people, so handhelds make more sense these days. However, consoles are still going strong in North America and Europe.

    • Mitch Hall

Well, the two “newer” consoles have only been out for a few months. More people will adopt them once they get some more games.

  • Gameonfool

Well been nice knowing you Nintendo, you shall be missed.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

Slow sales week indeed. Though in good news, PS4 had a rise in sales. Congrats Sony.

    http://www.clipartbest.com/cliparts/Kin/aLy/KinaLyziq.jpeg

    • Leo

      congrats selling 14k? cringe…

      • Daniel Gonzalez

I cringed more at the Wii U. Yikes…

        • Rinslowe

I’m not saying anything except apparently your “cringe” needs a priority reassessment…

  • Dark-Link73

At least the 360 sales went up. From a week to week sales increase comparison, it was the second best console in Japan. LOL! ;-)

  • Mario

Well, instead of complaining about what the WiiU doesn’t have, why don’t people enjoy what it does have? Because I’m definitely doing the enjoying part.

  • companyoflosers

the amount of gamers in japan is at a standstill as in the gamer population is not growing at all and i have a theory that it has a bit to do with the county’s population crisis that been going on. the age range of gamers has been steadily getting bigger, not as fast as western countries but its getting there, but it still cant compensate enough for the falling population. as a result japan is no longer a leading country in game sales. what they consider good sales over there would be considered horrible over here which may be why nintendo is having such a big problem with acting in support of their platform. to their japanese branch, perhaps the sales dont actually look that bad in light of what they have become used to. i could be TOTALLY wrong and over thinking it but even bouncing bad ideas can lead to the eventual conclusion.

  • ETeach

Considering the (combined) 3DS and PSVita are the top sellers again, I would definitely say handhelds are the future of Japan. Or the present, I guess…

  • http://Thissitethesitethatexiststhisisarealsitedontclickthis.com Shane Michaels

People buy things. They like things that seem to be the best, the newest. Wii U is a great console. However, it is not considered the NEWEST. So, the sales are not as good as they might be.
