Japanese sales charts – Wii U steady as 3DS rises

Wii U sales

Last week was one of the worst weeks in Japan for hardware across the board, with some of the lowest sales reported in many weeks. This week seems to be shaping up a bit, as the Nintendo 3DS has risen from last week while the Wii U has remained steady at 5k units. The PS Vita is enjoying a healthy boost in sales thanks to a new game, while the PS4 and PS3 peter out. In fact, the PlayStation 4 managed to only sell twice as much as the PlayStation 3 this week.

This is the first week in a while that a Wii U game debuted in the top ten, as the Famicon Remix 1+2 bundle seems to be fairly popular in Japan. Are you enjoying NES Remix 2?

So would it be a good idea to invest in a Vita here in the US?

    • steveb944

I’m going for Vita TV if it ever releases.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Epic Mario Kart 8 bundle coming with Free Game Promo so I think in about a month there will be a nice increase in sales for the Wii U.. Not sure how long it will last though

    • Rinslowe

Between you and me… Hopefully not too long.
      :)
Don’t want the big N getting too comfortable before releasing something else…
But I would expect one of the other titles to be released on or around the time the promotion ends. Possibly Bayonetta 2?

      • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

The definitely need to keep any good momentum going and I am hoping that based on the surprise Nintendo Direct today that Nintendo has removed the lock on their warchest and they intend to open it.

  • wiimenonowiiu

Im wondering how big the wii u sales will be when mk8 comes out

    • Nostalgic_Chaos

      It should be considerable.
Many people have been waiting to buy a Wii U just for MK8. In my opinion, it’s really the first proper big game for the Wii U. The rest were just warm ups

      • wiimenonowiiu

I agree it is the best AAA game to come out thus far and i cant wait for MK8 i hope it will push up wii u sales and we get more 3rd party support

  • Rinslowe

It’s really good to see the Vita gaining traction more and more. Every platform needs success, so we all win a little.
Even though the 3DS looks to be slowing down in general, it’s sold exceptional lifetime no’s in no time at all. So a real success story.
PS4 may taper off. but will definitely see sales bumps on every AAA title release.
And Wii U is strangely consistent with that 5k a week. That’s a small positive I think.
Now with Karts hype meter through the roof and the promise of a free title, it’s going to be interesting watching the Japanese charts after release day…

    • ben

I’m happy about the vita too. It seems like a pretty good system.

  • dcj91x

I wonder why they never show the “Vita Slim” sales? Or do they combine the Vita/Slim togehter.. if so why do they seperate the 3DS/xl? the vita slim has a lot of different hardwar the regular vita does not have. While the 3ds/xl are basically the same systems just different sizes. Do they combine the vita’s together to make it appear to have better sale numbers and seperate the 3ds’ to give it lower numbers? just curious..

    • C4

Different name. ;) They sell one as 3DS and the other as 3DS LL. It’s really the only reason as far as I know. They did the same with the DS for example. Vita TV is also separate. Vita “Slim” is simply PS Vita with model number 2000.

      • C4

Hmm… a few years ago Famitsu had separate sales of different version, while MediaCreate always listed both combined and separate DS versions. Dunno when exactly they changed it to how it is now.

i dint know the vita slim . . . shame on me

  • bistricky

Is Famicom Remix 1+2 a retail game in japan?

  • Ducked

Xbox 360 had a nice jump

    • Assassinated23

Yeah, how often do they get to sell two more consoles than the week before?

      • Ducked

        Not often

    • linkzero65

OMG 2 MORE XB360 CONSOLES WERE SOLD THATS HUGE MAN O_O Hory Shet

      • Ducked

Microsoft is popping the champagne bottle

  • jjbredesen
  • Frankie

This week was a 5 year low in Japan.

  • DoctorWily

What in the world is Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call??

    • C4

      • Magnus Gonzalez

lol, I can see why it does well there. Thanks

  • Leo

PS4 keeps crumbling down, if Mario Kart for the WiiU results on major sucess then the numbers of both consoles could even break even.

    • ben

The wii U is a long way a head in Japan. Once Mariokart drops then the gap will increase explanatory.

      • matthew garcia

        But not for the world

        • ben

I don’t care about America. I live in Japan. I want Japanese games. If the wii U sells well here Japanese Devs will make games. I dont hate Western devs. Just want them to make more games like Child of Light. More creative than the mounds of violent crap, semi realistic nonsense. I don’t like killing people in American cities. I am not American and I have no interest in the fantasy of killing people who look realistic.

          • Decker Shado

I do live in America. I still want Japanese games. I want creativity, and variety to the point of absurdity. I’m more than a little tired of the countless slew of “Invade Foreign Countries and Kill Brown People Simulator.”

          • Nintenjoe82

the funny thing is, those titles you just suggested would actually sell better than things like Medal of Honor and Sleeping Dogs

          • matthew garcia

U do realize Japanese love Metal gear solid lol. They love killing people also

          • ben

Metal gear is like an anime. It always has been. Metal gear solid 2 had a vampire.

          • Leo

Wow!! that was very “insightful” of the japanese perspective of the western market lol i love your comment and i agree with every word!

  • Donaald

It’s becoming more and more obvious that Japanese gamers don’t care for any PS4 game. In fact it seems handheld gaming is what’s up with them.

  • Arthur Jarret

So… 5/10 top selling games are Nintendo exclusives – and idiots go around wanting to fire Iwata? Give the man a raise, for god’s sake!

    • Mario

He should give himself a raise?

      • Arthur Jarret

Uhm… yeah, I’m not going to open the well of possible cheecky responses on that one.

    • ben

Just imagine how many downloaded copies of Famicom remix 2 were sold. That game is nearly all profit.

  • Cyberus

A Vita game is in first? I’m done. We’ve lost. I’m out

  • tachi

Vita is still underrated in u.s look at sword art online number one in japan even the vita install base is low aleast we buy games beating ps3 which has considerably high install base
