Koizumi and team already at work on the next Mario game

Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World was released to critical success last year and according to a recent interview with Edge magazine, producer Yoshiaki Koizumi and his team are already hard at work on the next game. Koizumi wouldn’t confirm whether the title will be for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U, saying it’s a secret, but he did say that the team is planning on working on new game mechanics. According to co-director Kenta Motokura, if the title is set to be another Wii U title, the team will make better use of the Wii U GamePad.

Another tidbit shared in the interview is that the double cherry item happened by accident during testing; a developer accidentally placed two Mario characters on the same course, which ended up the player being able to control both, which led to the creation of the double cherry power up.

With the team confirmed to be hard at work on the next Mario title, are you hoping for another Wii U title, or would you rather see another Mario Nintendo 3DS title? Let us know in the comments.

Interesting. I am wondering how they will incorporate the gamepad more. I wonder if we will ever see a Mario Galaxy 3. Miyamoto has said they may return to it in the future but who knows

I know the 3DS is next in line, but the Wii U needs it way more. The 3DS has plenty of games coming.

I don’t think we need another Super game anytime soon

    • Shaise

Couldn’t agree with you more. The sooner Nintendo realises this, the better.

    • Tecpedz94

I know a lot of you dont want to hear this but i think its enough of Mario for now. Unless they bring some new Mario game but i think Nintendo should work on a new game something suited for an older audience so they can get more hard core gamers to buy their console. I personally like the games they provide now but I’m not their only costumer

      • Thomas Vienna

I’m sure they are working on more diverse games, but I definitely won’t mind another Mario game in the next few years.

    • Ducked

Nintendo won’t make a sequel to the worst selling Super Mario game unless it comes to 3DS

      • Mario

Worst selling? No offense, but that game was considered one of the best selling Mario games on the Gamecube.

        • Ducked

Still it was outsold by Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

          • Mario

            So? Still a success regardless.

        • mario54671

That’s because the GameCube’s best-selling game (Melee) only sold about 7 million copies. 7 million copies is very good, but best-selling game on the platform? That’s kind of sad. Usually a “best-selling game on a platform” sells AT LEAST 10 million copies, like Super Mario 64.

Super Mario Sunshine sold about 6 million copies. Again, that’s good, but compared to how well Mario sells historically… it’s rather low. 6 million copies compared to the 40 million copies of Super Mario Bros., 18 million copies of Super Mario Land, 20 million copies of Super Mario World, 11 million copies of Super Mario 64, 11 million copies of Super Mario Galaxy, 29 million copies of New Super Mario Bros. on DS, 27 million copies of New Super Mario Bros. Wii…

Like I said, 6 million isn’t bad… but compared to all of that, it’s low.

          • Mario

            …Still good regardless.

  • Arthur Jarret

“…the double cherry item happened by accident during testing; a developer accidentally placed two Mario characters on the same course…”

Some of the greatest inventions have happened on accident: pasta, corn flakes, champagne, posted notes, the microwave oven, and now we can add to that list the double-cherry power up. :-)

    • gamesplayswill

Chips too! (Or fries, for the Americans out there. :3)

      • Blue Hernandez

Then what do you guys call chips, like Doritos?

        • gamesplayswill

If it’s a brand like Doritos, we just call them Doritos really.

          We call chips, crisps.

          • Blue Hernandez

Oh haha nice, crisps. For the record, we still call them chips when we order “fish and chips”, and I had no idea why until right at this moment.

      • Dark-Link73

I potato chips were invented by “accident” (actually more like for revenge), is that what you are referring to?

    • Thomas Vienna

      pasta was an accident? o.O

      • Dark-Link73

Yes, it was invented by the Chinese. According to the legend (which I don’t remember in detail), somebody dropped on accident dried up dough in boiling water and by the time they pulled it out, it was cooked and voila! Pasta was invented.

    • Magnus Eriksson

      Surströmming was an accident too…

  • gamesplayswill

Oh boy.. another Mario game… Look Nintendo, this better be a Sunshine meets Galaxy title, okay!?

*Angrily mutters as he reaches for his wallet*

Since 2009 we have had New Super Mario Bros Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Mario Party 9, Paper Mario Sticker Star, New Super Mario Bros 2, Super Mario Bros U, and Super Mario 3D World.

That’s three new super mario bros games, and two 3D Mario games. I’m hyped for Mario Kart 8, but I don’t want anymore Super Mario games until 2016. I want Metroid Wii U, a sequel on 3DS to Metroid Hunters, Legend of Zelda Wii U, F Zero, and Star Fox. I think we have enough Mario to last us the next two years.

          • Mario

FORGET IT!! I AM NOT TURNING INTO A ZOMBIE!

    • Zuxs13

nah, just take their time and release one in 2-3 years.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Mario is a great character, but he needs to rest
now. Give us a new Startropics instead, or something else. Wii U needs
      diversity.

      • Zuxs13

you sure love that Startropics game.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

It would certainly be something new.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Thats one of their franchises that everyone likes, and its not overdone.

          • DragonSilths

I don’t like it….then again I have never even heard of it lol.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Can’t dislike something you never heard of. ;P

I’d look into it. It spawned a sequel. Both were great games back in the NES days. What generation did you grow up in, btw?

          • DragonSilths

Fair point, I change my words to, not interested…but never heard of it.

        • Magnus Eriksson

          Dont you?

      • Shaise

What was startropics about? It had two sequels, correct? It was on the NES. Was it something to do with a jungle?

        • Magnus Eriksson

Startropics and Zodas Revenge. The first one is very good though. If you have a NES I would advice you to get it. Yes, jungle. Kind of Zelda-sh type og game.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

seriously. Just give him a damn break. Let the team work on ONE other game

    • jjbredesen

Yeah why not use the team to make a new Star Fox of F-Zero or ANYTHING that is not Mario!

Yes Mario sells well, but we have enough Mario games for the next 3 years, give us Galaxy 3 in 2016 and nothing else between!

      • Zuxs13

        2016 would be 2 years..

        • jjbredesen

Yeah, but 2 years is as long as he needs a break, making Mario a yearly franchise is a bad move in my opnion, would like 1 2D traditional mario and 1-2 3D marios.

          • DragonSilths

No 3-4 years is what Mario needs.

      • mario54671

“A 3D Mario game every year.”

Do you SERIOUSLY believe that the fact that they’re beginning development of the next 3D Mario automatically translates into “IT’LL BE RELEASED THIS YEAR LOL”???

If we let them take their time and make a NEW Mario game (No, NOT a Super Mario Galaxy 3, that’s even WORSE than them making it an annual franchise. NO MORE DIRECT SEQUELS!), then they’ll be taking their sweet time. At least 2 solid years of development. That means we’ll get the game in our hands in late 2016. That sounds like a fair break to me.

        • jjbredesen

I never said it would be released this year, i was talking about 2015 ;)

      • DragonSilths

No Galaxy 3, and Mario has been slowly selling less. NSMBU and 3DWorld went down in total sales. People are sick of Mario.

        • mario54671

That’s because they’re on Wii U, not because people are sick of Mario.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 still sold over 7 million copies, and Super Mario 3D Land sold 9 million copies. That’s a lot.

          • DragonSilths

New Super Mario Bros 2 was a colossal pile of shit. The whole focus was get coins. I never even finished the game I was like fuck this, this is pointless.

          • Kyle

A lot of complaining, but not a whole lot of reasoning.

          • DragonSilths

Reasoning? Mario is not about getting coins and nothing else.

          • mario54671

Oh, you didn’t delete this comment. For whatever reason it wouldn’t show me this comment when I clicked on it before. You can disregard that bit of what I said.

Regardless, I stand by everything else I said. New Super Mario Bros. 2, as uninspired as it is, still sold a lot. You and I may not have cared for this game, but millions of people still bought it.

          • DragonSilths

I guess. Mario = Money, although less with each game.

          • thedeciderU

            haha

        • Ultrasyd

It’s fine to me if they make something totally NEW. On Wii U, New Super Mario Bros Wii U and 3D World are boring when you played them on Wii and 3DS. Seriously. With the first one, I felt that I was playing the same game than on Wii. Even the music ! A better title would have been NOT SO NEW SUPER MARIO BROS WII U

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Yes. Thank you JJ. XD I knew someone would see what I was getting at

    • Pinky Peach

Pretty sure this game won’t be shown until 2016-2017. No need to worry.

      • paulthevgking

2016! more like next year. do you know how much money they made from 3d world. and we don’t know how long they have been working on it.

        • Pinky Peach

This is the MAIN Mario 3D developing team. They work on 3D Marios for quite a time before showing them (showing, not releasing).

        • mario54671

3D World only took just over a year to make, since they began development in mid-2012.

I don’t WANT another 3D World, I want another radically new Mario game. No more direct sequels, give us the NEXT successor in the main Super Mario franchise. No, not a Sunshine 2, not a Galaxy 3, not a Mario 64 2… just SOMETHING NEW. “Super Mario _______” whatever it’ll be called.

For a radically new 3D Mario game, they need at least two years of development time. We’ll probably see it in mid-2015 if it’s one of these games if we’re lucky. But if such a game is being made, we won’t actually get it in stores until 2016.

          • darkcreap

Mario 3D world is like a New Super Mario Bros in 3D. That does simply not work for me. Personal opinion, of course.

          • mario54671

It doesn’t work for me either. I wanted something radically new. For that to happen, they need more development time.

          • Thomas Vienna

I don’t think Super Mario 3D World was just another Mario game like everyone says, I thought it had a lot going for it. It was the first 3D multiplayer Mario experience, and it had so many cool levels. It added a sense of competition that other Mario games didn’t have when it shows who got the most points at the end of each level.

          • Thomas Vienna

“Super Mario _______!” lol, while reading this, my mind put in an angry swear word for the blank. I chuckled.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I’m worrying because they’re putting time into this game now, instead of putting resources into releasing something besides Mario AGAIN next year

        • steve

this team does mario, they have different teams working on specific franchises. don’t worry.

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

right, but I want to see what the mario team can do with another franchise

    • Vinicius

      Why? He prints money.. :D

      • Daniel Gonzalez

For the 3DS, indeed. As for the Wii U….not so much. ;P

We complain but we put in our pre-orders anyway.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I actually didn’t. And 3D World disappointed me

        • Michael Hughes

Fair enough. I was using ‘we’ to describe Nintendo fans in general, myself included. I’ve been critical of the company for leaning too heavily on its IPs, but then I pre-order Mario Golf. Fun is fun, at the end of the day.

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

yeah, I totally get what you’re saying. I felt the same way with NSMBU. I wanted to do the same with DKCTF, but I had no monies.

    • mario54671

      You’re an IDIOT.

Just because they’re WORKING on Mario right now doesn’t mean it’s therefore going to be released THIS YEAR.

Hell, if the annoying fans let the EAD Tokyo team take their sweet time with this one, we won’t even see it until late 2016. If they make something radically new like another Sunshine or Galaxy, that means they need AT LEAST two years of hard work to complete it. They begin development early 2014, they release it in mid/late-2016.

EVEN IF they end up making another easy one like 3D World, we STILL WON’T SEE IT until 2015.

BUT NOOOO THEY SAY THEY’RE WORKING ON IT THEREFORE IT’LL BE RELEASED TOMORROW LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

      • Magnus Eriksson
        • mario54671

The relevance of this image and the content in my comment is astounding. Your restraint from irrelevant ad-hominem attacks is admirable.

          • jjbredesen

Lets analyze your comment shalll we?

            “You’re an IDIOT”

Direct childish offence with the use of caps makes this a extremely immature thing to say.

“Just because they’re WORKING on Mario right now doesn’t mean it’s therefore going to be released THIS YEAR.”

You have a point, but the caps ruins your credibility, so i would recommend you drop it ;)

“Hell, if the annoying fans let the EAD Tokyo team take their sweet time with this one, we won’t even see it until late 2016. If they make something radically new like another Sunshine or Galaxy, that means they need AT LEAST two years of hard work to complete it. They begin development early 2014, they release it in mid/late-2016.”

Now that is true, they should take there time, but Zorpix’s point was we have to much Mario now, and they should focus on other IP’s.

And saying annoying fans is also a childish thing to say as the so called annoying fans are using legit arguments.

“EVEN IF they end up making another easy one like 3D World, we STILL WON’T SEE IT until 2015.”

You call 3D world easy? Its complex level design music, art style etc takes ages to make, how about you try to make a game like that? a easy game is something like flappy birds, not 3D world it is a hard to make game.

Then the fact that we will not see it until 2015 is the problem, we don’t want it before 2016, enough mario, and how can you know that? You need sources or facts to back your claims up ;)and then we have the caps.

“BUT NOOOO THEY SAY THEY’RE WORKING ON IT THEREFORE IT’LL BE RELEASED TOMORROW LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL”

Don’t even know what to say to that, either you are trolling or that is a bad attempt at a joke. and the LOL part makes it even more immature, so Magnus’s comment is 100% relevant as you are acting like wannabe badass behind a pc ;)

          • mario54671

“Now that is true, they should take there time, but Zorpix’s point was we have to much Mario now, and they should focus on other IP’s.”

The problem with this thinking is that people assume that just because Mario is being made by their Mario team, that therefore means every other team at Nintendo isn’t hard at work on something else. After all, they have a lot of things unannounced.

“You call 3D world easy? Its complex level design music, art style etc takes ages to make, how about you try to make a game like that? a easy game is something like flappy birds, not 3D world it is a hard to make game.

Then the fact that we will not see it until 2015 is the problem, we don’t want it before 2016, enough mario, and how can you know that? You need sources or facts to back your claims up ;)and then we have the caps.”

When I say “easy,” I mean that it was a much easier game than, say, Galaxy. It was much less ambitious, and it only took them just over a year to make, as they stated they started working on it in mid-2012. Galaxy began development in early 2005, and they released it in late 2007. That’s over two years of development time.

Since they stated they’re only gonna do one New Super Mario Bros. 2D game per platform, they’ve already gotten that out of the way, so this is really the only thing that COULD come out sometime soon.

I estimate 2015 because we saw Super Mario Galaxy in 2006, but it didn’t get released until late 2007. Unless Nintendo decide to just not show it until it’s months away from its release. Hell, Nintendo may want MORE development time with this game, so they may even take longer. I’m just estimating based on their past games that were much more ambitious and how long it took them.

“We don’t want it before 2016.” This is an opinion coming from… you. However, you cannot speak on every person’s behalf. Mario games still sell well (Yes, they didn’t sell AS well on Wii U, but the fact that they’re the best selling games on the platform speaks volumes), therefore there’s still some demand for it.

I think with a 3 year wait from 2013’s 3D World and this new game in late 2016, that’d be quite a long wait for a new ambitious Mario that takes advantage of the Wii U properly and is much more appealing.

          • jjbredesen

Now that was a good comment, and i do agree with you, but when you say i am speaking on everyone’s behalf i am simply speaking on the behalf of those that share my opinion such as Zorpix, Magnus and everyone that upvoted Zorpix’s comment, and thats the majority of everyone on this site, but yes thats up to your opnion.

As for development of the new game i understand what you mean by 3D world being easy, but although it has a simpler style than the galaxy games it is a lot more complex than it seems. Of course releasing a Mario game in 2015 would help Wii U a bit, i don’t really think the hardcore nintendo fans or the casuals are that interested in yet another mario game, unless they can shake stuff up a lot, and if they do use 2-3 years i think that would make a good game, but again you have got to prioritize what fans want, and although the game will be good it will not have as much hype as 3D world, even with a revolutionary new gamechanger it will not have the same effect as certain other games.

Yes Nintendo has more studios/teams, but they are almost all exstremly busy at the moment.

Again its up to what you opinion is and i respect your, but also disagree to some extent ;)

          • lonewolf

Even if 3d world is “easy” to make that doesnt mean its less ambitious lets say like galaxy its just means that the developers were developing mario galaxy now are more experienced with the system because they had more time to work on it but didnt back in 2005 and the tehnology now is way better than before

        • DragonSilths

You don’t want to mess with that guy. He would kick a 6 foot 4 Olympic powerlifter and street fighting god’s ass.

          • Magnus Eriksson

The guy in the pic? He kind of look dangerous in the serial killer fashion.

          • DragonSilths

            Yup.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

It also means they’re working on Mario instead of something else. So a whole year is going to be spent on ANOTHER Mario.

I didn’t say anything about it being released soon. I just said he needed a break. Maybe read a little better before you fly off the deep end

        • mario54671

But you fail to consider the fact that they have OTHER development teams. Why is it people constantly assume that because one Nintendo department does one thing, that therefore means THE WHOLE COMPANY is doing it, too?

EAD Tokyo is the 3D Mario team. That’s what they do. 3D Mario games. Obviously the 3D Mario team is now hard at work on the next 3D Mario game. Meanwhile, Eiji Aonuma and EAD 4 are still working on Zelda for Wii U, the other EAD teams are still doing their thing, and all the Nintendo SPD teams are still doing their thing as well. EAD Tokyo is going to keep making Mario games with Yoshiaki Koizumi.

EAD Tokyo has no say on who makes Metroid, Zelda, F-Zero, Star Fox, etc. They make 3D Mario games. They also have no say on whether a New Super Mario Bros. game goes into development, as they have no say on this either, they’re not the makers of New Super Mario Bros. They’re going to continue making 3D Marios, and HOPEFULLY if we don’t bug the hell out of them and let them keep this current project in development for a good two years (or more), then this new game won’t disappoint. 3D Land took less than a year to make, 3D World took just over a year to make, and it does show. Galaxy 1 took around two years (or a bit more) to make, Galaxy 2 took about a year and a half to make. Clearly, if they have more time, they can make much better games.

The Nintendo SPD side (Whichever team within that department does it) is going to continue making Metroid games, either alone, or with an outside developer (Retro, or someone else). What EAD Tokyo decides to do has nothing to do with Nintendo SPD, as the SPD teams have no involvement with 3D Mario development.

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

True, but I’d like to see what the brilliant Mario team can do for characters other than Mario. They could revive some amazing franchises

    • darkcreap

I reply to Zorpix because it is the top comment so everyone can see I think the same: STOP RELEASING MARIOS EVERY YEAR. I started my videogame days in the NES and SNES with different Mario games. Mario Bros 1, 2, 3, Mario World, Yoshi’s Island, Super Mario Land 2, Wario Land, etc. Actually Yoshi’s Island and Wario Land are not technically Mario games, but, what I mean is.

DO NOT CREATE MARIO FATIGUE, DO NOT TRANSFORM MARIO IN THE NEXT CALL OF DUTY, PLEASE, NINTENDO. Whatever you do, do not overuse Mario. It is starting to become stale. Give it a rest, give the team more time to create new concepts and the next Mario to arrive years later, when people want to come back to it and the team has had time to apply fresh new mechanics, like the Mario Galaxies were in the 3D Marios.

I don’t mean that they make a Mario Galaxy, but I mean that they take their time to really create a brand new experience like Mario Galaxy was.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

yeah… mario’s getting worn out. Give him a damn break

    • http://exazblog.blogspot.com/ Prince_AKR

      - Tell that to Activision and CoD
      – 2K and NBA
      – EA and…Most of their IPs

My point is; if you have something that generates bucks, you better use it! I know, it would be nice if Nintendo actually used the myriads of IPs they have locked away in the history-vault; but let’s be real – a major Mario title is something that comes out every now and then; it’s not an annual thing.

SM3D: World just came out in 2013, right? What was before that? SM3D: Land – which was 2011. SMG2 came in 2010, and SMG came in 2007. Sunshine was released 2002. SM64 was in 96.

See how far between that is? In 11 years, there were only 3 releases. In the full 17 years; there have only been 6 releases.

The reason why people have this perception that Mario is being pumped out every second is because there’s a lot of spin-offs, like Party, Tennis, etc. I’m not even putting Kart in there because it’s huge, so it can be considered to be a flagship title. But yeah – that one’s the same; there have only been 8 Mario Karts in the last 21 years. 7 in the last 17 years.

If we never had Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, or any of the other spin-offs; we’d all be dying for a Mario game, lol

    • RyuNoHadouken

      THIS

    • steve

they are gunna make a mario 64 type game for wii u i bet, and its not very often that happens so shud ep!

  • insomniac

maybe its for both consoles? like SSB?

  • ActivesiN

I love me some Mario but come on, is this a Mario console or a Nintendo Console
bring us some variety in games then push out another Mario

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

    Hopes it’ll be Mario 64 / Sunshine / Galaxy style :'<

  • Magnus Eriksson

Come on Nintendo! Mario is a great character, but he needs to rest now. Give us a new Startropics instead, or something else. Wii U needs diversity.

    • mario54671

I don’t know why people automatically think that the fact that they’ve begun working on one now automatically means they’re “releasing it tomorrow.”

Super Mario 3D World took them just over a year to make, as they began development in mid-2012. EVEN IF this is another conservative Mario game (and for God’s sake, it better not be, let Nintendo take their time with this one), we won’t actually SEE it until 2015 in early demo form.

If they’re making a radically new 3D Mario game that elevates the concept like Galaxy did, that means they’ll be taking AT LEAST two years of development for the game, and we won’t have the game in stores until late 2016.

That sounds like a fair enough break to me.

It’s as if people think the Mario team is the only development team that exists at Nintendo and the fact that they’re working on another Mario to be released in a couple years means they are working on nothing else.

      • DragonSilths

The problem is they decided to once again go back to Mario, MAKE SOMETHING NEW. STARFOX FOR FUCKS SAKE.

        • mario54671

No, their MARIO TEAM decided to once again go back to Mario. You act like because they announced that they’re working on their next 3D Mario, that automatically means every other team at Nintendo has thus stopped development of their in-development unannounced titles just for Mario.

How do you know they haven’t been making one already? How do people know Metroid hasn’t already BEEN in development? Obviously the MARIO team is going to make another MARIO game, just like the ZELDA TEAM is making a ZELDA game. It’s not just one team at Nintendo, there are several EAD teams and SPD teams, they’re all doing their own things.

          • DragonSilths

Starfox is not in the works. Metroid is Retro yada yada.

          • mario54671

We don’t know Star Fox isn’t in the works, Metroid’s a bit fuzzier though, as they’ve been giving all these hints, but no actual confirmations on anything. They haven’t announced anything, that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. Rather like how Pikmin was originally a Wii game. We may not have SEEN the game in its original Wii state because Nintendo never showed it off until it was a Wii U game, that doesn’t mean its Wii version never existed.

All Retro said was they’d like to work on a Metroid game in the future. That doesn’t mean another team at Nintendo SPD isn’t already working on Metroid with Sakamoto. Hell, when Retro first made Metroid Prime, one of the Nintendo R&D teams (now Nintendo SPD) simultaneously made Metroid Fusion on GBA. Nintendo themselves could be handling the next one on their own.

Also, in response to your now-deleted comment: Yes, New Super Mario Bros. 2 WAS a rather bland, uninspired game. That doesn’t change the fact that millions of people still bought it. The Wii U iteration and 3D World were better games, but they sold less because they’re on Wii U, not because of their quality. (3D Land is a better game than New Super Mario Bros. 2, and it sold better)

          • DragonSilths

Retro said before that Nintendo gave them the choice to do Metroid or another DK, they chose DK. So unless they gave it to someone else AFTER Retro said DK, it was still there waiting for Retro as their next project.

          • Enumerating Wishes

Either way I can’t feel excited knowing another Mario game is in the works. If Nintendo manages to put respectable games within the development time frame then maybe.

    • Hobo

Personally I disagree, while I understand there is a lot of Mario games recently and not many others, that’s perfectly fine as long as Mario continues to be fun! They still have other game series, like Zelda, Yoshi, and the funky bunch headed to Wii U. And let’s not forget that Nintendo still has Sakurai, creator of Kirby and Smash Bros and both of those are no doubt some of Nintendo’s finest innovative series. Personally I loved Super Mario 3D World and I wouldn’t mind a sequel or even just a port of Sunshine! ( Sunshine being my all time favourite game! ) But that;s my opinion and I respect yours as well!

  • Miles “Tails” Prower

That was a cool little fact about the double cherry.

  • Zuxs13

Well since they are the “Mario Team” what else would they do? I just hope they take their time and release it in 2 years or so. Nov 2016 would be a good time.

  • Rinslowe

I think a while back Nintendo said themselves also, they never stop working on ideas for their IP’s. And that at any one time there are multiple teams working on projects that may never actually get used in a working title. Or at least, they never really know which ideas might get featured in what generation…
This looks and sounds exactly like that.
Who knows when it would be ready. And probably why the platform is a secret. They don’t know yet either…

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Can’t say I’m excited tbh, yet another mario game in development, and it’s a surprise? Sounds like N pulls the plug on Wii U and it’ll be for the true next gen Nintendo console (last sentence is sarcasm in case it wasn’t obvious.)

    • ETeach

I couldn’t sense the sarcasm, actually. So I’m really happy for the clarification XD

  • ZeldaFanzzzz
    • Alexander Kleinwechter

haha i wish i coud like this more then once xD

    • Ducked

Its so painful when someone beats you using that in the very end of a race

  • Capt. Smoker

    Mario 3.5D world I bet….

  • Pinky Peach

Considering it is the team from Super Mario 3D World, then I think the game could be unveiled in 2015 or 2016, now wether it is for Wii U or for the next Nintendo home console, I don’t know. Remember, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 have 3 years between them, and we all know Galaxy 2 is better than 1…
Galaxy 2 was the last big 3D Mario for Wii… Maybe this one will be the same for Wii U.
Although I would prefer it to be the next Nintendo console launch Mario title.

  • paulthevgking

please be galaxy 3, i was so let down that 3d world (which is a amazing game) took galaxies 3 announcement.

  • http://www.epicpassiveincome.com/ Elvis Michael

I know some of you are asking for a Mario break, but keep in mind that most Mario iterations are very different from one another. For example, New Super Mario Bros U cannot truly be compared to MK8. So, as long as each Mario version is different, there should be no need to take a break from Mario.

Also remember that even if they are working on a new title now, we won’t be seeing it until 2016, at the very least, so that should be plenty of rest for those who truly need the break.

    • Mario

Mario: Yep. I’m a restless gaming machine.

  • paulthevgking

or maybe the infamous mario universe

  • RockieOllie

    More Mario….
    Yay…. What about a Starfox….

  • anthony optimo

YES!!! The Wii U support continues.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Does it? It doesnt say so in this article.

      • anthony optimo

I shouldn’t have jumped man to conclusions, I really hope the next Mario game is on the XB 1. Maybe that’s what today’s Nintendo Direct is about, how they abandon the Wii U, better to say that today instead of announcing that news at E3 huh Magnus?

  • Mario

At what hour the direct is taking place?

    • LevenThumps

The specific time depends on your time zone (obviously), but if I’m right, I think it starts in about 80 minutes (1 hour 20 min.)

  • DragonSilths

Mario has turned into Sonic….Milked to death and yet still keeps on coming, while the wow factor diminishes. Leave Mario alone for 3 years or so.

    • Mario

The same thing can’t be said about the quality though.

      • DragonSilths

        Yup.

    • Jason

Except Mario games still gets good reviews from critics, while Sonic doesn’t.

      • Mario

True that. I just hope the blue blur gets back on his feet someday.

      • DragonSilths

Tsk, reviews. People who get paid to review things I don’t take to seriously. People who own the game and play it more then 5 minutes just to get a pay check are where true reviews are at. Youtube and such.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

I tend to pay attention to user scores. Actual owners who play the game for hours, tend to give you a better picture of what you can expect.

  • ETeach

Hoping WiiU. 3DS has plenty of good games. WiiU’s getting there, but hey, more mario.

  • Shaise

First Mario game without Miyamoto? Interesting to see how it’ll turn out.

  • Ace J

wow another mario game??? well i hope its open world like mario 64 and sunshine. and not just a “3D” version of super mario bros U.

  • Abdulaziz Sirafy

mario party 10 I think so

  • metalpants

If they make 3D World 2, I’ll skip it. If they make NSMBU 2, I’ll ignore it as if it never even existed.

But if they make a SM64/Sunshine style Mario game with MK8 level graphics… I’ll buy 20 and give them away to random strangers on the street with a huge grin on my face.

  • 00EpicGamer00

“Are you hoping for another Wii U title, or would you rather see another Mario Nintendo 3DS title?”
How about not a Mario game at all? Mario’s great and all, but Nintendo acts like Mario is the only IP they have. Please, Nintendo! After this Mario game releases, please take a break. Make something else. Seriously, Nintendo has so many franchises that they could experiment with, but choose not to.

Anyway, I guess to actually talk about the point of this article. I hope this “new” Mario game will be very different. Not the typical Mario game play, a.k.a. rescuing Princess Peach. I really want a Mario game that has an in-depth story. And for Peach to actually have an important role. Instead of always being the damsel in distress. A good example would be the Paper Mario franchise. 9 times out of 10, Peach has an important role, and those games usually have a really good story. I’d like a Mario game like that for Wii U, but more explored upon.

    • Mario

Wasn’t Peach a playable character on 3d world?

      • 00EpicGamer00

Yes, I kind of forgot about that. But, again, she didn’t have any sort of role except just to “tag along.” I want her to be important, you know? Aside from just being kidnapped.

        • Mario

          Right…

        • Petri

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Princess_Peach
          ???

Now how do you make a game with a princess in a pink dress named Peach, without making it a game for little girls?
Unless American McGee gets a crack at that, I don’t know.

          • 00EpicGamer00

I don’t necessarily want Peach to be playable, I just want her to have an important role, besides being kidnapped all the time.

  • Nookling

Normally I’d be happy but I am so done with Mario.

  • Sdudyoy

Now not to be mean or anything, I want a new 3D Mario game, not a sequel to Mario 64, Sunshine or Galaxy, I want an all new open world Mario game, personally I didn’t care for Galaxy 2, but Galaxy 1 was one of the first game I decided to 100%, but really I want somthing new from Mario.

  • Josie the Sketcher

An open world rpg Mario game would be nice though.

  • Kyle

Ehh, quit whining everybody. Galaxy 3 needs to happen, make it a late date Wii U title.

  • Fierce-Deity Link

here is my take… another mario is here because it’s a guaranteed success.. well, to an extent anyway.. let’s be real.. people love to ask for f-zero, star fox, etc. but a lot of you wouldn’t even support it… people wanted a new ip and didn’t support the brilliant [imo] game that was the w101… we have bayonetta 2 coming out.. i bet it wont sell more than 500 k if lucky.. why? cause the fanbase complains but they dont support.. not saying all, but there are many like that.. now, i am not saying support a 3rd party game or a brand new ip if doesn’t interest you, but from a business stand point… mario is the way to go.. tough shit i know… any who, before we complain let’s wait and then see wht the game looks like.. 3d world got shat on but turned out to be fun as hell…

  • Tim van Broekhoven

Wealready knew that about the double cherries from Iwata asks. Oh and btw MAKE MARIO 64 2!!! Please wakawaka

  • WiiUPS43DS

    Works for me

  • Wiiluigi

I love Mario have every Mario game you can think of but seriously? Really we need a Metroid.

  • steveb944

New game mechanics? FINALLY. I hope it comes to Wii U, I’ll pick it up as my first Mario title

  • Gregg

Awesome. Love me some AAA quality Mario games. Bring it on.

  • sd

No mention of the platform? Hmmm, does that mean with the lack of sales on the Wii U, no new game announcements and no rush to release the games this year as advertised that they have given up on the Wii U. Will they develop this game and then if sales stay flat release it on their next console in a year or so.

Oh and yes many will hate this idea. Maybe I will be called a hater, but hey as a day one Wii U owner who is still waiting for the games that were supposed to be released in the first 6 months I am no hater, I am a realist.

    • Petri

I am still waiting for the reason for my Wii U, not that there hasn’t been other games to enjoy.
I did hope the game would have released within 6 months after launch.
And mildly annoyed that the game still has no release date.
But did the games you are waiting for have a release date?
      Were they promised at launch?
I think all the games that were supposed to be at launch, are out now.

      • sd

There are some good games on the Wii U. My issue is that they keep changing release dates. All of the launch games were delayed by up to a year. Mario Kart, bayonetta 2, SSB and donkey kong were all set to be released by Christmas 2013. They also initially had earlier release dates, bayonetta was initially set to be released in the first 6-9 months.
Nintendo did a Nintendo direct late in 2013 delaying these games yet again. In previous directs they kept stating they would be out in 2013. They announced late in 2013 that they would have a steady release of games in the first half of 2014, with these games all being released. Now they are spread out across the whole of 2014. Seriously, just 4 Nintendo games in 2014 for the Wii U.

In addition they had other games that were announced and promised, like yarn yoshi. These have not been mentioned again.

My belief now is they are giving up on the Wii U while they work on their next console.

        • Petri

Nintendo is doing pretty half-assed job with Wii u, they just weren’t prepared to the changes that they had about 6 years to study on.
I don’t think they would be stupid enough to cut Wii u ‘s life short, that’s how you go the way of Sega.
They most definitely are working on a new console, so is Microsoft, and so is Sony if they’re smart and still have the money for it.

My point just was, that I don’t recall any of the games that are yet to come, to have solid launch windows.
Maybe Mario Kart I could vaguely remember being advertised as 2013 game.
But for example Bayonetta 2 I have been following so closely, that I can say it never had an release window, and still does not have (except for Japan ), which annoys me a bit.

          • sd

Yeah Mario Kart has a definite release date at the end of May. Smash Bros is down as the end of the year for the Wii U and Bayonetta is not going to be released before September. Basically for me it means no games to play after Mario Kart for another 6 months. I know people are talking about Sonic Boom and other games but thats multiplatform and I have and Xbox one as well. To be honest after mario Kart I might call it a day, sell the console and grab a PS4 for The last of US and upcoming uncharted games.

          • Petri

Sonic boom is not multiplatform. It’s the third exclusive.
            Unless you meant 3ds.
There is another sonic game on the way.

And I get it. If it wasn’t for Bayonetta 2, I would have never got the console, and went all pc for my gaming.

I might get ps 4, if it gets any games that interest me, and aren’t for pc

          • sd

I could well be wrong about sonic boom. I read that it was coming to the xbox one. But I also read that a new sonic game was coming out in 2015, so maybe that’s where my confusion is from.

  • MTGSWE

What a suprise!! The team responsible for 3D Mario games are making another one.

Next you will be telling me the Animal Crossing team is making another Animal Crossing or that the Zelda team is making another Zelda <:O

  • URFTBOUND4LIFE .

A lot of people seem to hate this….I understand why but also you gotta understand that Mario is what pays the bills over there. Not Metroid. Not Starfox. or F-ZERO. Gamers hate to admit it but it’s true.
Now I do agree that they should ease off on Mario (dispite the fact that I’m a big fan of the series )a bit but realistically, I don’t see that happening. i think we should all hold off judgement before they actually reveal this game guys,ok?

  • John

Nintendo will always be working on another Mario title, so this is hardly news. It’ll be in development for quite a while yet, so there’s nothing to report…

  • Ultrasyd

“better use of the Wii U GamePad”, I hope so. The gamepad was totally useless in this last one. And isn’t it a way to disable the gamepad’s screen when you play on TV ? I’m sure that it would allow the battery to last way longer.

  • Andrew W Garttmeyer

Wii U. Sick of 3DS exclusives while I bought the sinking ship.

  • J.r. Storms

I hopes it follows the path of the galaxy series. 3dworld was awesome, but i kinda felt like it was more of a party game (them focusing on the multiplayer and all). I mean i think it was a great entry, but i just hope they dont get stuck in that loop because the open world 3d games are incredible. With all that said, 3dworld has one of the best soundtracks i’ve ever heard.
