Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS releasing before Wii U version

super-smash-roster

Nintendo released a new Super Smash Bros themed Nintendo Direct today which revealed new info on the characters, stages and game modes along with even revealing two new characters! Of course one of the most significant new things revealed was the release window for the two games.

We now know that, somewhat surprisingly, the Wii and 3DS versions of the game aren’t releasing at the same time, with Super Smash Bros for 3DS releasing this Summer and Super Smash Bros for Wii U releasing later this Winter. Nothing more specific has been announced yet regarding the dates so we’ll have to wait until later to learn the exact dates.

What do you all think about this? Is it strange to see the games releasing at different times? Which one are you most looking forward too after today’s announcements?

    There are really no words…

  • metalpants

Eh… it pretty much sucks… but I’m kind of way more excited for Mario Kart 8 right now than I am for Smash (even though it looks AMAZING so far) but… yeah. It’s not an “all is lost” ordeal for some of us.

    • Mario

      uh huh.

  • Alana-kami san

I thought it would be common sense to have the Wii U one out first.

  • Jake Stinson

want bolth but will be more likely to hold out for WIIU. Simply because multiplayer with friends

    • DragonSilths

You have no friends on your 3DS?

      • Jake Stinson

not as many as I would like

        • JB

Don’t feel bad, I don’t either, then again that could just be the product of out all my friends, only one owns a 3DS. LOL

        • DragonSilths

As much as I hate it, Miiverse is there….add people from there.

  • Yousif Alromaithi

What the hell Nintendo is so fucking insane.

  • ActivesiN

the second they said Wii U version coming in Winter my heart sank….and I could barely pay attention to the rest of the direct

    • C4

They really dropped the ball on this…

      • ActivesiN

        yes….yes they did

        • JuleyJules

Is anyone surprised? I figured this would happen so I didn’t bother watching getting frustrated and disappointed. Nintendo needed a direct focusing on Wii U for a change imo.

          • Arthur Jarret

Here’s a video focussing on all Wii U games coming between Mario Kart and Bayonetta’s releases!

          • Fred

So why didn’t they do Mario Kart Direct?

          • desgraciado79

Because that one did not get delayed.

      • AkaLink77

all i wanted was a fall release window. but now im crushed…
        UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!
WINTER!!!!! I cant stop raging on that!!!!!!!!!! DX DX

(dont look at CDi Link, hes being insensitive!)

      • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

You think it’s BAD that it’s coming winter of this year? I was expecting the worst as a 2015 release

        • Aleks

Winter begins Dec. 21st and goes allllll the way until March 21 2015! (i guess that technicality is the same everywhere). That leaves less than 1 week in 2014. I wouldnt be surprised if it did not make it out in 2014.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

But they said winter *2014*. I wouldn’t worry just yet. Once the 3DS version is finished they will have the entire team devoted to the Wii U version, with more than half a year, I know they will come through for us. And worst case early 2015-sounds good to me! That means it will be an even better game! People need to learn to stop being so impatient. This game needs to hold us over at least 6 years, so it better be dang great!

          • Wildman

It will be released in November this year. A week before black Friday. Calling it right now.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

I like that, alot. That release date would be optimal for sales, and optimal for me-just in time to reduce the upcoming stress of finals! :P

          • Ace J

but that isn’t WINTER. that is Fall 2014

          • Wildman

True, but when is gets cold is winter to some people.
Anyway, from a business standpoint, Before black friday is the best time to sell something. Look at the PS4 and XBone launches.

          • Fred

The only reason I’m impatient about that date is I want smash bros to get people to Wii U up for Christmas smash could really cause a Christmas spike in sales.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

Totally agree, that’s why they said “winter 2014″, not “winter season 2014-2015″. They’re trying everything they can to get it to us by Christmas for that exact reason, so don’t be scared just yet.

          • Alexis Goitia

Idiotic people don’t understand seasonal launching.

    • Rich Garriques

extremely disappointed , f u nintendo for releasing 3ds version earlier which is the shitty one and not the wii u first. honestly nintendo im done with you.

      • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

Thats ridiculous. If they released the “better” Wii U version first, then why would they want the “worse” 3DS version after??

        • Magnus Eriksson

This is dishonesty from you. You know perfectly well that this means that Wii U version is down prioritized.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

            Absolutely not!

They release the crappy version first and then will work for another SIX MONTHS on the better version of the game-during that time they will announce how much better it is than the 3DS version and how it is a completely different experience.

If anything, I’d say the opposite is true, they “rushed” the 3DS version and are showing priority to the Wii U version by spending an extra half-year!:)

          • desgraciado79

So we are supposed to accept a shittier, inferior product so that we desire the superior product even more (when it gets released way later). Sounds like a shitty marketing ploy.

            Good job buying into it.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

Okay, I shouldn’t have said the 3DS version is crappy because it will definitely not be. COMPARATIVELY, it will be inferior to the Wii U version-but that should be understandable by anyone.

Are you saying Nintendo is wrong for releasing Mario Kart 7, and then later releasing Mario Kart 8, a superior version???

Besides, the 3DS version is worth the purchase solely because it is Smash on the go! The Wii U version will obviously not offer portable smash, but will be have superior graphics, stages, and content!:) don’t get your panties in a bunch bro

          • desgraciado79

            Mario Kart 7 and 8 aren’t the same game. 7 isn’t a portable version of 8.
            Panties.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

            Exactly!! Look:

Mario Kart 7: portable Mario Kart, great game with good features, best Mario Kart available for 2 years.

Smash Bros 3DS: portable Smash Bros, great game with good features, best Smash Bros available for half a year.

Mario Kart 8: home console Mario Kart, incredible game with amazing features, best Mario Kart ever. [If people believe that it is not a big enough improvement over Mario Kart 7, they can skip it over]

Smash Bros Wii U: home console Smash, incredible game with amazing features (they just haven’t all been announced yet), best Smash ever. [If people believe that it is not a big enough improvement over 3DS version, they can skip it].

Get the comparison now? Yes it is not the same situation, but because Nintendo decided to release the 3DS version first, the situation is comparable! I am going to by both games so I can play Smash on the go, and when I’m home I’ll have the best experience possible

    • Javy G

Honestly, that is very weird. I own both 3DS and Wii U and was not looking to purchase 3DS version. But now since it’s being released a long time before Wii U version, kind of makes waiting pointless and draws less attention to Wii U version. It was supposed to tempt people into buying a Wii U. And now when it does come out, it makes an old and kind of a been-there-done-that type of thing for 3DS owners (which is like 80% of the planet).

      • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

Disagree, I was personally scared that the 3DS and Wii U version would launch alongside each other because there are WAY more people who own a 3DS than those who own a Wii U. If they launched at the same time, many of those 3DS owners would say “Oh well I mean I have it on 3DS, it’s basically the same game-I don’t need to buy a Wii U to play smash, I can get it on a system I already have.”

With a DIFFERENT release date, it shows that they are DIFFERENT games with unique experiences. It means more time is put into the Wii U version, and that it will be a BETTER experience! :D

        • Javy G

I know it will be DIFFERENT and definitely a BETTER experience. I’m just glad they are taking there time on the Wii U version but it is just so far away. Guess thats why they are releasing it on 3DS early, to give us our fix before the Ultimate Edition comes out. None the less AWESOME Direct!

        • Alexis Goitia

Yes, and if the 3DS version launches before it will simply burn down consumers and they’ll simply say: “I already have this game, why do I need to pay 60 bucks for HD?”
The point of Smash was to sell the Wii U, TO MOVE UNITS by making the IT GAME a fucking exclusive for at least a couple of months; that way anyone who wants to play it has to shell out the money for a console or wait for the other version for months, if the game that is 90% the same as the 3DS version launches six months after it then what is the fucking point? HD? HD is the fucking point to the fanbase that has been saying that HD does not matter for the past 7 years?

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

So now you’re going to go into every one of my posts and reply, that’s cool but please stop using profanity as it’s unnecessary and crazy immature.

Realize this: the plan was never to release the Wii U version first. The plan was to release them both at the same time, which would have been horrible because people would realize they could get the SAME GAME for $20 cheaper.

          • Shadao

The statement means fan base doesn’t want graphics to overshadow gameplay and other important aspects of the games. That doesn’t mean they don’t want the best graphics in world. If Smash Bros plays the same on both version, people will obviously choose the one with most superior graphics and features, namely Wii U. People buying Xbox One for Battlefield 4 is a testimony to that.

    • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

What’s wrong with a winter release?

      • ActivesiN

if you only own a 3ds then nothing is wrong with it, because you ge tthe game soon
but as a Wii U owner having it launch months after the 3ds version its very irritating
Smash has always been a console game, and now a handheld version is coming out first?
I understand why its launching first, the 3ds has a much larger install base so they get priority but the 3ds version should be a stripped down version of the game with less characters and less stages so people have more of a reason to buy the Wii U version later on

        • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

They have the same amount of characters presumably to allow for the “connectivity” between the games, but they separated the dates in order to show that the Wii U version is DIFFERENT than the 3DS version! Think about this: there is still around 8 months until the Wii U version is released-if Nintendo told us all how amazing that version was, it would hurt the 3DS version’s sales! Once the 3DS version is out, Nintendo will start explaining how the 3DS version is good, but the Wii U version is 20x better! Better stages, enhanced graphics, and a CRAZY amount of content.

Just be patient and give it some time, mate. :)

          • Fred

            I really hope you’re right

      • DC777

Well for one it’s 8 months away with only 1 known Wii U exclusive in the mean time.

A lot of people are acting like it’s “great news for holiday sales”. Unfortunately they aren’t realizing that depending on the actual date (such as the second half of December) there may not be enough time for adequate sales before Christmas, that you would get from say a fall release. Some people finish shopping well beforehand and others are so busy the closer it gets will just not even notice.

You also lose any momentum created by MK8 if nothing else comes out. Even if say Bayonetta 2 comes out, it won’t have the impact of SSB.

I never thought when I got this system I would be getting put on the back burner by it’s handheld counterpart.

        • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

“people will not have to but a Wii U to play SSB”.. That is what people would have thought if they had been released at the same time, but because Nintendo is staggering the releases, they are emphasizing that the Wii U version is different, and superior than the 3DS version! If they want the very best they will have to buy a Wii U:)

          • Alexis Goitia

Listen you dumb cunt, I’m getting sick of idiots like you saying “If they launched at the same time…”
Don’t you fucking get that’s not the point? The point is this game was going to save Wii U BY COMING BEFORE THE 3DS VERSION, not with it, BEFORE, you idiotic piece of shit.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

Wow, completely unnecessary personal attacks-are you okay?

Sorry but you’re just going to have to get over it, because at this point all the complaining you can do will never change the fact that the 3DS version is coming first. All you can do is make the best of the situation, like I am.

The Wii U version is going to be so incredibly hyped because of all the amazing features it’s gonna have, amazing graphics, amazing stages, etc. It will save the Wii U despite being released at a different date! Don’t worry ;)

          • Alexis Goitia

You obviously don’t know how market works.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

From your personal attacks and unnecessary profanity I would say that you are a lot younger than I am, but okay-tell me what I do not know.

          • Guest

I know how bullies and trolls work :P

          • revolution

            Flagged.

    • sd

They have been saying this all year. This year they have donkey kong in feb, Mario Kart May, Bayonetta September and then SSB. Thats poor and an example of how Nintendo keep going back on their word.

Personally i think they have given up on the Wii U and will announce their next console, which will be released in Nov 2015. If they do this then I predict a heap of steady game releases in the first 6 months for their new console.

      • ActivesiN

…they are not going to release a new console in 2015, it takes years for research and development for a new console
they would also burn 6million people that purchased a Wii U and those are their hardcore fans, which they can not survive betraying
so they are going to have to ride out this generation off of 1st party games , indie games, and few 3rd party mega titles here and there

        • sd

Whether it is 2015 or 2016 I still think they have given up on the Wii U. They will spread their games out slowly, like they are doing. This will be just enough to placate some Wii U owners. But I am pretty certain they have secretly abandoned the Wii U.

      • Fred

Don’t forget X is supposed to come out this year. By far the one I’m looking forward to the most

        • sd

X will not be released this year, neither will Zelda.

          • Fred

You don’t know that X isn’t coming. It’s scheduled to come here in 2014 Nintendo’s own papers said so at the January investor meetings. So don’t act like you know what’s going on unless you have some inside info on what’s going on at Monlith Soft and you know they’ve run across some unexpected problem that will kill the release date. I’m planning on playing X in December until I hear otherwise.

          • sd

LOl, Nintendo said everything was coming last year as well. I highly doubt X is coming this year. If it were they would be advertising it all the time and showing constant clips like they do with SSB or Mario Kart. The only way of showing that I am correct is to wait until the year has passed when they announce it will be a 2015 game. Should be a great game though and I will get it when it releases.

      • uPadWatcher

@sd Actually, Nintendo will be announcing their new home console to be released in 2017. The Wii U’s lifespan is already a year old and showing its potential on future games. Sonic Boom is one perfect example. Not to mention the fact that SB will be the first Wii U game to be powered by the CryEngine.

        • sd

2017 would be the latest. I still think sooner. Did you see the article about the virtual boy 2 VR set. It was on Nintendolife, they stated research and devlopment has been stepped up on this to compete with the upcoming VR machines.

Personally I think their next console will have the virtual boy 2 integrated and will be released as soon as possible. so 2015 or 2016.

In an ideal world they would just start living up to their initial promises announced in the nintendo directs. But it just isnt happening.

    • Gam

I think it’s a coincidence. If you look at the 3 and the U logos, they resemble Summer and Winter, respectively, so it bitterly makes sense, but also heartwarming about the future the dev team will bring to the Wii U.

  • bakedapplepie

Kinda disappointing. Here’s hoping theirs a 3DS Super Smash bundle to hold me over till the Wii U release.

    • Skelterz

What about mario kart man all is not lost jeez.

      • Brandon

Mario kart will only last for so long, but there is X, bayo 2, and what ever 3rd party game that decides to come out for the wii u.

  • metalpants

Well… 3DS IS doing about a thousand times better than Wii U… plus that’s were all the Pokemon fans are at so, it kind of makes a LOT of sense from a business standpoint…

    • Yousif Alromaithi

Not it does not make a business standpoint since WIi U will have better online and probably better mods since it is more stronger.

      • DragonSilths

        mods? NO CHEATING.

        • Yousif Alromaithi

Cheating is fun when not caught lol.

      • metalpants

Are you drunk? Of course the Wii U is “more stronger”, but the 3DS is selling like ten times more and keeps selling well. So let’s see… 3DS is selling way better, and the majority of Pokemon fans most likely own a 3DS (which would explain why there’s so much Pokemon stuff in Smash)… yeah… I think Nintendo would lean in favor of the system that is most PROFITABLE and not most POWERFUL. Please understand.

        • Yousif Alromaithi

Am I drunk, yeah I am thanks bra. No, I am not. I know it is stronger so stop calling me names.

          • metalpants

            OK… you MUST be trolling.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

No you are the one who is trolling what did I do for trolling. I am annoying you for calling me drunk. I never did any harm.

          • metalpants

            xD. OK.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

            XD.

  • Afo

The one thing that bothers me is that we will know the full roster before the Wii U release.

    • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

Agree, but I can’t help but wonder if the way you unlock them is different. That would be cool! So at least you’re not playing the same game with better graphics?

      • Afo

yeah I hope so, the Wii U version will probably get a exclusive mode like the 3ds version did

        • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Wii U will get an exclusive mode or modes that are even better than the 3DS’s!

  • nin-10-doughfan

let them do what they want, and if they want to release it for next year or two, there is nothing we can do!

  • Mario

    …BOTH!!!

  • Deadpool U

I really don’t see any problem with it I mean developing for the 3DS is quicker and easier and releasing the Wii U version around the holidays should help with sales.

    • Ace J

      Winter 2014 = December 21, 2014
the earliest we could see the wii u version. this doesn’t bother you even a little bit?

      • Yousif Alromaithi

        It bothers me.

        • Skelterz

buy a 360 and dark souls that should see you through to the winter pal.

          • Yousif Alromaithi

Lol I have Dark Souls what does that have to with anything I don’t understand.

          • Skelterz

basicly if your annoyed about the wait grab a different game to see you through dark souls was a relevant example because of its difficulty and length depending on how well you know the game, might i suggest skyrim with all dlc??

          • Yousif Alromaithi

I did not try DLC but I picked Skyrim 2 years ago not on launch. Everybody said it sucked because I had PS3. Then I played the game was one of my best games. Never tried Dark Souls 2 yet.

      • Skelterz

While you wait you could complete mario 3d world with every single character but don’t grab that tanooki suit they must shimmer!!!

        • Ace J

or i could just……….forget it. i will probably just game on my ps4 and 3DS lol.

          • Skelterz

That’s the attitude man dark souls it up.

      • Jake Stinson

winter 2014 not holiday 2014… I think more like Dec 7th or 14th or maybe late November even

        • greengecko007

Winter 2014 is the confirmed release window for Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U. As Ace J pointed out, the first day of Winter, the earliest release date possible for SSBU, is December 21st.

        • Ace J

you are correct. they said winter. the first day of winter is December 21.

          • MysteryT

Can’t we pretend winter starts at the beginning of December?

      • Zackary Bruley

This is TOO literal. I would think about a week before Black Friday. Lets just face it, its a holiday title.

        • Ace J

then they would have said Fall 2014 if that was the case.

    • Skelterz

You like being fucked then you should just put a photo up of your bruised behind because clearly you don’t mind being fucked this is you..

oh sakurai i love the fact you delayed the wii u version i can even see the logic ooohh do me sakurai san do your final smash. UBISOFT LOVER!

      • Deadpool U

So it’s clear everyone has gone into “pissy baby mode” by this point.
Well then I’ll be back in a few days when people want to be rational again.

        • metalpants

For real. It was more than expected that the Wii U version would come out around holiday season. I’m not sure why everybody went into whine mode when they could just ignore the 3DS version…

          • WiiUltra

It wouldn’t be the same to play on the 3ds than lets say the wii u pro controller or your controler of preference. I don’t see the big deal.

          • metalpants

            Exactly.

    • Rich Garriques

really so it doesnt bother you that they are releasing the shitty version of smash bros before the good definitive one?

    • John Andalora

You think the Wii U is gonna get holiday sales after all their casual fans still left will only pay attention to the 3DS version sold 6 months earlier?
I gotta say I have my doubts about that.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Lol, thats just lying. You know perfectly well that this means that Wii U version is down prioritized.

  • Sdudyoy

I’m actually glad they’re doing this, if not I was going to skip the 3DS version, now I have time to get both, if they where to release the Wii U version first there would be no way I would buy the 3DS version, I would already have owned a much better version.

    • DragonSilths

3DS Version holds back the Wii U version.

      • Skelterz

3ds version = cheaper easier to develop SD graphics are ages old there’s is no way it ”held the wii u version back”.
There’s more money in releasing the 3ds version first because more owners of the console the best version will be for wii u but most people will buy both.

        • DragonSilths

It was already confirmed to hold back the Wii U version. There wasn’t even going to be a Wii U version PERIOD. Sakurai said they thought the only way to innovate Smash Bros was to make it portable. Then they said fine we will do a Wii U version, but if you think they would make the Wii U version so good it obliterates the 3DS version which was their main focus then your an idiot.

          • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

Can I have a source? I don’t believe he ever said there was not going to be a Wii U version. There has been a Smash on every home console since the N64.

          • DragonSilths

No it was definitely said. I cant find it right now, but I’m looking.

  • Fierce-Deity Link

my gripe with this decision is that the wii u needs a killer game soon.. mk8 is coming out, but if the wii u version of smash came out like late july it would have more must have games… also, i’m not too sure if we’ll get the game 2014 now.. if it said fall then i’d believe somewhere in the winter it’d come out, but now it seems to be looking like an early 2015 release :/

    • DragonSilths

December 2014 it will come out. your forgetting after the 3DS version comes out in July then everyone focuses on the Wii U version and not being split between the 2 versions…

      • Fierce-Deity Link

perhaps, but that is assuming there is no delay for the 3ds version.. regardless, the wii u version should have been a priority imo…and even with everyone working on it… it’s still possible they dont release it on time..

        • DragonSilths

I cant support the idea of the 3DS version being finished…and then Nintendo saying nope you don’t get it till after the Wii U version comes out, the 3DS version will be the better version anyway seeing as it holds back the Wii U version. As for delaying the 3DS version…I doubt it. How often do handheld games get delayed?

          • Fierce-Deity Link

i dont follow handheld games since the gba.. so idk how often they are delayed.. my point is merely that it’s still possible that they may end up delaying smash for the wii u.. i want to be optimistic, but i am not so sure XD

  • verymetal

Makes no sense to me, but then again Nintendo has stopped making sense.

  • Nintengoth

Okies, well it was great! Zero Suit Samus is wow! haha the new characters were great! I am abit bummed that I wont be getting it for like another 6 months but hey itll be awesome! I only have one question… where is Captain Falcon?

  • Skelterz

The game looks good enough to wait for if i’m going to be honest even if i had MK8 and the new smash i’d probably play mario kart more anyway so its not a huge let down. I do on the other hand find it easy to see frustration among everyone else who wanted it earlier i suppose if you want it grab the 3DS version then get the wii u one i mean i can almost bet that if you pick up the 3Ds version you’ll get the wii u one for a bit cheaper anyways cool direct i was hoping it would not be completely focused on smash bros but seeing as they literally have no other games in the pipeline
”we know about” at the moment what can i expect, I just hope so much that there is at least a demo by E3 time for the wii u owners like myself because that might ease the sting a little.

  • Krzysztof

Is it just me or does Nintendo doesn’t really care about Wii U anymore. I understand that from business point of view 3DS will make way more money then Wii U, but 3DS isn’t the one which needs plenty of support right now.

    • Skelterz

    • metalpants

      Two words… (and a number)… Mario Kart 8.

      • JuleyJules

Wii U can’t be saved by only MK8. Wii U needed this before 3DS but once again Nintendo shows what they favour and it’s not Wii U.

        • metalpants

Don’t worry, I agree. But Mario Kart 8 will do wonders IMO. That said, like I mentioned above, I agree that the one which should’ve been the “afterthought” should be the 3DS version and not the Wii U one. But, what can you do *shrug*…

          • JuleyJules

Yes 3DS should be the afterthought but MK8 isn’t going to be enough for Wii U no matter how good it does. MK8 should be a start of a ‘comeback’ with other games after like SSB. Now it seems like it’s being made to be the one and only saviour!

          • metalpants

Well, by the looks of it from our current standpoint, it is. Smash will do its thing later, but all eyes are on MK8 right now. That said, E3’s around the corner so, we shall soon see if Nintendo has some sort of “plan b” for summer and fall.

    • metalpants

But I do agree that the one which should’ve been an “afterthought” should be the 3DS version and not the Wii U one.

    • SP-937-215

Nintendo always do this. They stagger their first party releases to maximize sales for each release. If MK8 wasn’t coming out in May then we would be much more likely to see a SSB launch this summer. They’ve done this all the way back to the NES days.

      • John Andalora

That only works when the releases are different games or have massive nostalgia value from 10 or so years ago.
But remember that this is literally the same game. People aren’t going to want it on the Wii U if they can get it on the 3DS for cheaper and 6 months earlier.
If the 3DS and Wii U were different games, this would make sense. But no one is going to drop the money on a Wii U when 3DS is cheaper and has few differences (and that Smash run thing!)

        • J_Joestar

They are the same characters and basic game mechanics, but almost all the stages are different which can impact heavily on how you play the game overall (IIRC the Megaman and Metroid levels look like they may be Wii U exclusives and they are the only ones we know have Bosses so far). We also don’t know what else they may be cooking up for the Wii U version since we know that “Smash Run” is unique to the 3DS and the Wii U could have an even bigger game mode(s) that is impossible for the 3DS to handle.

          • John Andalora

Do you honestly think that a couple of maps and some modes will get enough people to buy the Wii U version 6 months after the game already came out?
I hate to say this, but the casual/ video game market that Nintendo focuses on with this game is very fickle, and after finding that the game already came out on a much more popular console, will forget about the one coming out so much later and move on to the next thing. Possibly some new kind of pet simulator or strategy game.
I highly doubt that there’s anything on the Wii U version that’s going to make many people buy it, or even more buy a Wii U to get it.

          • SP-937-215

You make good points. The 3DS version is going to sell far more than the Wii U version. Either way, I think the release scheduling is more based on sales potential than perfecting the Wii U version of the game. But I have my fingers crossed for a more social online gaming experience with the Wii U. There is absolutely no good reason why this game should not have open voice chat available from day one. If there is a problem with language, well that’s what parental controls are for.

    • Alexander Kleinwechter

ughh, they release the wii u version in winter just before christmas, so everyone wishes it for christmas, they relase the 3Ds version this summer because summer vacation, and people trave, and they take with their 3DS, and when it comes in winter, it will mostly focus about the Wii U version. So its way better they release it this way

      • Krzysztof

Yeah. I know what you’re saying and probably it makes sense, but unless Nintendo got something big to be released this year, they’re gonna loose momentum again. As from MK8 relase there’s 6 months to the holiday season (normally holiday games are released in November the latest). So if you really think about it, with 4 massive 1st party games coming out, plus Watchdogs, they could have a new, big game released every month if something new would come out from the E3. Honestly, I can’t think of better line up to sustain this momentum and sell wii u like a hot cakes. But what we have instead is pretty much nothing throughout the summer after MK8 and new smash IS the game of this holiday. That tells me, if whatever’s going to be announced on E3, won’t be released this year.

    • Magnus Eriksson

This is exactly what they are doing. They have down prioritized it because they dont believe in the product anymore. Only reason.

      • Krzysztof

Whether it’s true or not, it certenly feels like it. In my opinion what should’ve happened is smash for Wii U should’ve been released in summer 2014 and AFTER it’s been released, 3DS version should’ve been announced (during E3 preferably).

    • Shadao

Delayed Game is good eventually, bad game is bad forever.

  • Nicolas Dorion

“surprisingly, the Wii and 3DS versions of the game aren’t releasing at the same time” (paragraph 2 line 1) god lord even the people writing Wii U daily are confused with it

    • DragonSilths

Wii U and 3DS. Not Wii and 3DS.

      • Nicolas Dorion

clearly you haven’t fully read what I wrote

        • DragonSilths

I re-read what you said, you still said Wii and 3DS…

          • DragonSilths

OHHHHHHHHH my apologies good sir. You were talking about the article, I’m sorry.

          • Nicolas Dorion

HERE IT IS, PARAGRAPH 2 LINE 1

  • SuicideSobe

I don’t think that the different release dates was a significant part in today’s direct. 5 new characters and new level and mode announcements was far more significant. Online play and a way to connect to both systems(though very brief) sounds very cool I’m glad they separated they release dates. If people complain about it.. its like buying two different call of duty games.. difference being maps or levels in smash’s case. Final smash’s revealed looks very promising and old character revisions. AWESOME. cant wait.

  • Skelterz

ALL I CAN SAY IS WHO CARES LET THEM GET ON WITH IT MK8 FTW!!!!

  • ConCity Soldier

I thought the Wii U version was going to be released sometime this Summer prior to watching the Direct. :(

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

While this sucks in some ways it is not really a bad thing except the Winter release of the Wii U version scares me as I hope Nintendo is smart enough to release it for the holiday shopping season.

With the unique features in each of the game versions it will give players time to play the 3DS version and then get the Wii U version later. I suspect most fans of this game will get both provided they have both systems to play it on.

    • jrob23

like they were smart enough to follow SM3DW momentum with DKTF Holiday release? Oh right, they delayed that till the next spring. Face it, it’s coming in 2015. They just don’t give a fuck about the Wii U

  • Jonathan George Anaya

Wow, the WiiU is Doomed. Nintendo had ONE shot at regaining momentum with Smash U. But, now there is NO REASON for the average consumer to buy a U when Smash will be out months beforehand on a CHEAPER Device.

    • Krzysztof

It truly hurts me to say that, but I kind of agree with you. I was absolutely convinced that smash will come out shortly after MK8. Then Bayo, X and something unannounced yet during the holiday season. That would be an ideal lineup to gain some momentum. Not even mention delay of one of the most anticipated 3rd party games, Watchdogs. Ugh :/

    • Jacob Bulkley

I don’t feel this was Nintendo’s “one shot”, but I do feel it would have made more sense to release Smash on the Wii U first.

    • Colt Lokk

but smash on wii u is just better. Playing with a wii u pro controller is better than playing on a 3ds. Also HD graphics, different stages, and possibly wii u exclusive modes. So those are reasons.

I have both a 3ds xl and a wii u, but i will only be getting smash for wii u. It’ll just be better.

      • John Andalora

Because a few stages and HD graphics make a game so much better!

        • Fierce-Deity Link

well, it’s not just that.. the wii u provides 4 player offline matches.. and that my friend is never the same on the handhelds.. u can play mario kart 7 online, but playing battle on mario kart 64 is a lot of the time more satisfying…

          • John Andalora

            Here’s why this isn’t a good argument:
Mario Kart 7 has Multi-card play and Download play, both of which allow up to 8 players at a time to be playing in the same room.
            8 PLAYERS! WOW!
Can’t do that while sharing the same TV…

Also, I’m gonna make the fair assumption that the 3DS version of SSBU is definitely going to have the same features, because that’s what SSBU is all about. Phasing that out would be the dumbest choice Nintendo would ever make with that game. I doubt the experience will be any different if all your friends look at their own screens over just one massive screen.

So, there will be 4 player offline matches on 3DS as well, exactly the same as the Wii U.

        • Colt Lokk

Playing a game like smash on the 3ds just doesn’t seem comfortable.

The controller is the biggest reason i have for why the wii u version is better. There’s also probably better online. Plus, local multiplayer on one big screen just seems funner. The HD graphics is just a bonus.

I mean, from your argument that stages/HD graphics don’t make the game that much better…it must mean that you think both versions of the game are equally good, so I guess you’d prefer to 3ds version because it’s cheaper.

          • John Andalora

If I do get SSBU, I’ll probably get it on 3DS.
Mostly because I’m not one who cares if we’re all playing on the same screen, so long as we are all having fun and playing the same game.

And honestly I would say that the 3DS and Wii U versions are about the same, honestly, much like I think that the PS Vita and PS3 versions of Playstation All Stars Battle Royale are the same game. Because they are.

I suppose my issue with the graphics argument is that for the past year and a half I’ve heard people either talk of how “all the other consoles are only prettier graphics, how worthless of them to just make another PC” or “The Wii U’s graphics are SO the same as Xbox One or PS4 Graphics” while personally having about as much excitement for graphics as I do for filing my taxes. I don’t see it as a big deal. So long as the game is entertaining.

  • Skelterz

Smash bros late release = zelda U 2023…

    • FutureFox

Winter 2016 to be realistic. Seriously. Its an emerging pattern for Nintendo to save their mainstays for holiday boosts. The rest of the titles they release are just to pay the Nintendo bills and meet a commitment to Wii U owners.

  • Aaron Michael Castle

Sucks in general. But buisness Maybe a smart move. .just tired of waiting for wii u version. I doubt nintendo sales would be struggling if most desired games came out earlier… hopeing sales skyrocket with some of the releases this year

    • metalpants

Hey… at least this put that rumor of a 2015 release to rest ;). We should be happy that it’s coming out at a point in time where everybody will most likely be ready to get it (money-wise).

  • Jake Stinson

Gotta love all the negative Nancys here… doom and gloom. all is lost because this or that. Have faith

    • Jonathan George Anaya

Have faith with all 2 Wii U titles scheduled to release this year???

The Only 2 official games left of 2014 for the WiiU are Mariokart 8 and Bayonetta 2. TWO titles for 8 months……
Start seeing how any delays are Bad News for the Wii U

      • metalpants

You forgot ‘X’ and the billion indie titles coming out just this year. Plus the stuff that will be announced in E3 that we already know of (SMT x FE, Hyrule Warriors, etc.). Way too early to be this negative ;).

      • Jake Stinson

remember the virtual boy I say that is the worst Nintendo fail. yes I do admit that the Wii u is doing worse than most anticipated but I think it is still a great family system. It will do better than how it is doing now. once some of these big tittles come out maybe 3rd party developers will finally
        back the Wiiu

    • Krzysztof

Trust me, after 17 months of owning Wii U “have faith” is my second name. But, you can’t blame people for slowly loosing hope as even for the hardcore fans, current situation doesn’t look good at all and delaying games on the system which desperately needs new games isn’t such a good news after all.

      • Shadao

You rush a game in development, it will live in infamy forever.

    • desgraciado79

Out of curiosity, did you just buy your Wii U? Like within the last week?

  • Schultz38

asdflkjqwen that’s it Nintendo wants the WiiU to die

  • JB

I was pretty disappointed in the long wait for the U version vs the 3DS, but then I thought about it and it makes total sense. 3DS will sell more being it has a larger install base and it’s probably easier to develop for. Not to mention, Releasing this summer or even fall, it would take away from MK8.

I’m in the camp that Nintendo will release Bayo 2 and Hyrule Warriors between May and winter to tide U owners over, not to mention have other surprises in store for us at E3. Nintendo clearly wants Smash for Wii U to be the big holiday title for them. I would guess that they’ll have a bundle or two, hell even an incentive for those who have bought the 3DS version. In any case: TAKE MY MONEY!

    http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s–5cmz8Y9f–/c_fit,w_320/670756943480167461.gif

    • jrob23

to you and others hoping that E3 will bring more games in 2014. That is NOT going to happen. We are talking June for E3. So wait till half the year is over before announcing a game to drop THIS year? And Hyrule is hardly anything to get excited about. Bayo we already knew about. Man, this is shaping up to be another awful year for the Wii U

      • JB

I didn’t imply any sort of excitement over Hyrule Warriors, I’m just merely saying that it’s a title that could tide people over in the meanwhile. It’s not a true Zelda title, but it *is* a Zelda title nonetheless, so that alone could generate sales.

I also didn’t imply that I was hoping for surprises at E3, I’m just saying there *could* be. To say that’s not possible is ludicrous thinking. There have been E3s in the past where a game was announced and it dropped that same year and not just from Nintendo. Hell, there’s been Nintendo Directs where they presented a surprise game that was available immediately. NES Remix comes to mind. Granted it was an eShop title, but the point is, they and other companies do happen to work on stuff all the time under cloak.

        • jrob23

I know…just meant that the Wii U is struggling. Mario Kart is a great start. Nintendo needs big titles coming often in order to keep momentum going. I think we can agree that any game announced won’t be huge. They need more Metroid, Zelda, new IP, Smash, Starfox….less indies, NES Remix and Hyrule. Not that those are bad, they just aren’t what is needed to get the Wii U to sell systems. I would have thought that by now Kart and Smash would already be out and Zelda and Metroid announced for this winter and Zelda for next spring. That is the type of pace they needed to do well this generation. Sadly, there are nowhere close to that. The Wii U has been treated like an afterthought.

          • JB

I feel your pain jrob. I think things really look bad for the Wii U because it’s just really Nintendo and indies pulling the weight. With almost no third party support, things look rather thin. Heck it doesn’t seem like Nintendo is getting much in the way of shovelware which seems rather telling.

      • pfef

yeah too bad Mario 3D World was announced on e3 last year and came out the same year. We just knew that a 3D mario is coming, similar to that we know that a new Zelda is coming.

        • jrob23

sorry, but a Super Mario Land on steroids is not the same thing as Metroid or Zelda. The Mario games don’t stray too far design wise as evidenced by how similar NSMB and NSMBU are and Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World. Now if it had been Super Mario Galaxy 3 I’d give you that one. We DO know a new Zelda is coming, just like we knew a new Mario was coming, but I would be very surprised if that Zelda released same year. Just different scales involved. I’d be day one if so though!

        • Magnus Eriksson

          There wont be a Zelda.

      • Magnus Eriksson

I dont think the will mention anything new for Wii U this E3. They have fucked it up and not even they want to support it anymore. I think Nintendo views Wii U as a dead product. Also I think they are assholes letting Indies carry the burden by them selves.

        • jrob23

I think footage of Zelda (but no release window), more footage of Yarn Yoshi with release window. Release dates for Bayo and a S.T.E.A.M. tease. I do NOT expect Metroid or Star Fox or any other such reveal. Apologists will say “we got a Zelda and new IP reveal..what more do you spoiled brats want?” and of course, what we want are games and soon. What we get are games for the future with release windows.
E3 should be a full court press. It should have Metroid, Zelda, STEAM, Yarn Yoshi AND either Fzero and/or Star Fox.
But I agree with you. They won’t blow their load on the Wii U. They’ll give it Smash, Kart and Yarn Yoshi but everything else will be for their next console which I predict based on talk, will be slightly improved Wii U with cross play functionality with 3ds or 3ds successor.

    • Brandon

The install base situation is fucking stupid so that’s not a reason cunt! >=(

      • Guest

You need to be banned for good.

  • Tra Allen

If they released in the summer no one would focus on mario kart. The fact it’s coming out in the winter is clearly to sale the wii u when people buy systems the most (chirstmas). Releasing the 3ds first will make people who can’t wait for the wii u, buy a 3ds. Business people will get this

  • Alexander Kleinwechter

Its crazy enough to work xD haha nahh its all fine, its good what they did here, so i can get my 3DS version this summer for my bday, and the wii u version for christmas then hehe :3 and its good they releasing the wii u version later just before christmas, so everyone is wishing ot for christmas, and the other one for summer, when its vacation, good job nintendo, awsome direct ^_^

  • JuleyJules

What? Wii U needs games like SSB so Nintendo releases it on 3DS first?? Makes no sense to me anymore how they deal with getting Wii U back on track. Why would they do this?

  • MerryBlind .

I think this is pretty retarded.

  • Scoopz

Given the situation with Wii U right now, I think if Nintendo thinks they can get away with releasing Smash Bros Wii U in winter, then that indicates some major surprises come E3 :)

  • FutureFox

Predicted release dates for mainstay titles:

    Zelda U: Winter 2016
StarFox U: Winter 2016; but delayed to summer 2017
    Mario Galaxy 3 2017
    Metroid: Winter 2018

*With each each of these titles accompanied by at least 3 other titles.
    Wii U journey ends 2019.

  • Mr.Magoo

I’m wondering why Nintendo would release the Wii U version months later than the 3DS version. I wonder if it is because they want the Wii U version to have more content or if they have just given up on it.

I know the Wii U version will probably have better online but if it is the same as the 3DS version people will have very little reason to buy the Wii U version.

I know Mario Kart 8 will help sell the Wii U but if they gave the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros more content than the 3DS version like characters or Stages ether them being free or DLC it will give fans of the game a reason to go out and buy the Wii U version.

  • Wiiluigi

I too am disappointed with the winter release. I think it’s more for the holiday sales.

  • Tyler Faile

This is a brilliant move. If they can get people with 3DS systems to buy SSB, an upgrade to an HD version just in time for Christmas will add a Wii U to the wish list of many people that don’t own one.

  • Zackary Bruley

I’m OK with this. I will buy the 3DS ver. this summer and destroy it and by that time, the Wii U ver. will launch. Again, take my money.

  • disqus_Dk6KM2972y

3ds is getting way to much focus.

  • Ducked

Nintendo really screwed up. This could seriously kill the Wii U. Most people will buy the 3DS version since it comes out much earlier. They just proved they don’t give a damn about Wii U, and 3DS is their #1 priority, good thing I’ll have a Wii U.

  • John Andalora

You wanna know what I think the worst part of this is? I want to like the damn Wii U.
But Nintendo always gives me a reason not to.

Now that SSBU for Wii U is a Christmas release (and that there are only about 6 AAA games expected to release from now to Christmas (MK8, Lego Hobbit, Amazing Spiderman 2, How to Train Your Dragon 2, SSBU and MAYBE Watch Dogs)), it’s just so not worth it to even try to care for this thing anymore. (By the by, I’m counting games with release dates! Sonic Boom might come out, but no one knows for sure. 2014 doesn’t count as a date).

Better hope you like waiting, kids. Nintendo’s great at giving you lots of that.

    • Fierce-Deity Link

well, this screwed up this launch.. i’ll give u that.. it sucks, but it is what it is.. i have expressed my opinion on the matter and i am not happy with their decision to have the 3ds version out first, but it sort of makes sense.. and we shall see this e3 if nintendo will have a good line up for fall and winter.. hell, it’s possible that part of the summer [august] we might get something like bayonetta…

      • John Andalora

Hate to be negative, but I highly doubt that Bayonetta or X are releasing any time soon.
Remember how the last Nintendo Direct didn’t even give a ball-park estimate on when they would come out? If they have to push Smash Bros as far back as Winter 2014, I highly doubt they’ll have Bayonetta 2 ready for the masses before then when its regarded so lowly on their list.

        • Fierce-Deity Link

i agree completely.. i dont see bayonetta coming out in august, but i’m hoping for a october release.. and they may have not announced it cause they are waiting for e3? i will wait til e3.. if there aren’t a constant release of games the latter part of this year i will probably rant about it so no worries xD

          • John Andalora

One can hope I suppose, but even then I still doubt that.
I think that if they wanted the best results they would state that Bayonetta 2 was coming out in 2014 last direct and then announce the date at E3. It would at least give people something to hold on to.
But with absolutely no confirmation as to whether or not it’ll come out by 2014s end, I’m not expecting it til 2015.

          • Fierce-Deity Link

well, bayonetta 2 was announced for summer 14 in japan so it’s not unlikely that it will show up like october or november imo.. in any case, e3 will help the wii u or just let it sink.. i’m hoping for the best xD

What did we learn today…Even Nintendo delays Wii U releases of games. No more complaining about 3rd party doing it!

  • J.r. Storms

Its because of MK8. Nintendo is trying to ride the waves as far as they will go with the Wii U. They figure they can push MK8 for half a year and then release SSB4. Honestly its probably the best decision right now, if they are released at the same time the wii u version will get overshadowed on install-base alone, and its not like they can wait until winter to release the wii u version first and then the 3ds version even later.

  • Aleks

Boo. Winter begins Dec. 21st and goes allllll the way until March 21 2015! (im guessing the seasons are observed the same in every region). That leaves less than 1 week in 2014. I bet we do not see a 2014 release date :(

  • Daniel Ireland

Winter release? That’s brutal… I know they want to boost their sales for Christmas time but come on!

  • metalpants

I honestly can’t believe people are complaining after an awesome Direct. We KNEW Smash U was coming sometime close to the end of 2014… all signs pointed in that direction since the original announcement. And if the 3DS Smash release is the problem, well let’s just say that if you’re a loyal hardcore Smasher, you’ll wait for the console version… so it really shouldn’t even faze you. I know I’m skipping the 3DS version for sure.

  • ANTI-DOOM

    I kinda understand their position:

3DS version this summer = lots of sales. Kids will be playing this at summer camp even. Wii U version this winter = killer game just before the holidays, attaining maximum sales for a home console.

“Wii U needs a killer game right now” is true but let’s be honest most consumers DON’T spend a lot of money right now. It’s not that time of the year yet. Mario Kart 8 will be a good test because it’s an anticipated game anyone with the slightest notion of what Nintendo is about will recognize. Smash Bros has always catered to the gamer crowd. And that’s a crowd that isn’t pleased easily, might as well make them wait as the game gets polished further.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Balldropping Nintendo. This was not good.

  • TobyObey

I don’t get what people are so angry about. I thought it was obvious the WiiU version was coming late. I was suprised myself that the 3DS version is coming before the WiiU, but it’s probably the smartest if Nintendo play it right. For the first more peole own a 3DS, so if Nintendo play it right, they could market the WiiU as being the best version and maybe have some features exclusive to the WiiU. And since more people have played the 3DS version, they might be want to buy a WiiU + the WiiU version too.
And I don’t think they choose to have the 3DS version come first, the 3DS version was probably the quickest version to finish the production on.

  • Teves153

NINTENDO! what are you doing?! By doing this you’re only going to hurt the sales of the Wii U version considerably. You’re 3DS sales are doing well, you need to start thinking about the Wii U. When someone walks into the shop and sees SSB 3DS, he’s probably going to buy the 3DS and ignore the Wii U version because you have to wait longer and won’t see the point in buying it as he’ll think it’s the exact same game.

  • Petri

See people complaining about delay and comparing to 3rd party delays…

Nintendo delays the game to improve it.
3rd party delays Wii U versions to improve the other versions.

Was there a set date or period for the game announced?
Delay is, when it does not hit its intended launch window.
So far only game I know that was delayed (for Wii U), was Pikmin 3.

Though don’t think this does a service to Wii U, but I think MK8 is better system seller than SSB.
That is what they should make a bundle of before SSB release.

  • Zanzama

I don’t get how the release date is getting more attention than the game itself tbh…

    • desgraciado79

Whats the point of the game if we won’t get it for a long time?

“Hey, look at what you can’t have!”

      • Zanzama

What’s the point of complaining about things you can’t change?

        • desgraciado79

          It makes me feel better.
But I can change it. I can change it by not buying anymore of Nintendo’s sh*t.

          • Zanzama

Boycott only works to a certain degree…

          • desgraciado79

Boycott or not, I can stop giving them my money if I am not happy. That is a change I can live with.

  • WhataShame

It makes perfect sense to me… sell more games for the platform with the most users, fill treasure chest, rinse, repeat. The bigger the war-chest they have going into the holidays, the more money for marketing for the traditionally huge sales season.

But something that might be over-looked here; summer is the season for portable, hand-held gaming. If you don’t have choose between being out in beautiful weather after this brutal winter (for those living in temperate zones) and playing games, then that’s even better. Leave the big console version launch for the holiday season, and weather more appropriate for staying indoors in front of your TV.

Or maybe this all comes down to differences development cycles for the two systems (although an action game like this in 3D at 60fps… that has to take some time to get right). Either way, I don’t think this is a bad thing at all. And if the 3DS version is amazing, what better hype and press for the brand before the main event?

It sucks because it STRONGLY suggests that Nintendo has nothing else planned for holiday release. I don’t know how Iwata has kept his job. Not because the utter lack of games is specifically his fault, but because it has happened under his leadership. I think maybe X and MAYBE Bayonetta get released this year, and with those, Mario kart, and smash Bros, that’s four games the rest of the year. I hope I’m wrong. I hope they announce something amazing at E3, but I wouldn’t hold my breath….

    • Blue Hernandez

Four exclusives, really really awesome ones btw, is pretty good for any console. With watchdogs and all of these games: http://www.ign.com/games/upcoming/wii-u
There, now you can have more than 4 games for the rest of the year for your Wii U.

  • audi lover

In the winter? Is that 6 months with out a Nintendo game release after Mario cart in may? I don’t know why im even surprised

  • e_rocket

So, don’t even they trust the wii u any more… This is so stupid

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Looks like I didn’t overreact with my statement holidays 2014 dissapointed again. But some surprising and interesting news nonetheless. Better then I expected, atleast some things.

  • Logan Wayman

Maybe it’s because the Wii U is going to have platform-exclusive characters?

  • 00EpicGamer00

I think at this point, even Nintendo doesn’t care about the Wii U. Seriously, why release the 3DS version first? I release it’s probably a “better” business decision, but come on! The 3DS is popular enough. Give the Wii U a turn.
