Earlier this week our own Jessey Nettey got to sit down with Flying Carpet Games’ Salim Larochelle to see what he could find out about the upcoming game, The Girl and the Robot, which you can see some alpha footage of here. The resulting article was originally posted on PS4 Daily, but since the game is coming to Wii U as well, and there were some details that might be relevant to Wii U owners, we thought it’d be worthwhile posting it here too, Enjoy!
Jessey: Gameplay wise, you said your inspirations for The Girl and the Robot were Ocarina of Time and ICO. However, the first time I saw this game, I immediately thought back to Minority’s Papo Y Yo. Have you had the chance to play that and if so, would you say that inspired you as well?
Larochelle: Since Papo & Yo is also from a Montreal studio, I had the pleasure to see their game before release at an event in early 2012 (IGDA Montreal Demo Night). I was very inspired by the idea of their game and of course I wanted to re-create some of their unique ambience in our game. However, the idea of The Girl and the Robot came to me way before I saw footage of Papo & Yo.
Jessey: Will there be any differences between the PS4 and Wii U versions?
Larochelle: So far, it is still early to tell.
Jessey: How will this game make use of the Wii U’s gamepad and will it support the Pro Controller?
Larochelle: We taught of maybe using the Wii U screen to keep track of both characters while you switch between the two. We are also aiming for Pro Controller support.
Jessey: Will The Robot receive any upgrades during the duration of the game?
Larochelle: Yes, but you will need to play to figure out what the upgrade is about.
Jessey: Can The Girl fight without The Robot?
Larochelle: Not directly; she might be able to set traps for enemies using devices in the environment.
Jessey: What is the Queen’s goal in all of this? The trailer makes it apparent that both The Queen and The Girl have the same powers albeit on different levels, is The Queen trying to do something with that?
Larochelle: Sorry, this need to be revealed in the game. All I can say is that the Girl and the Robot are trying to escape the castle and the evil queen really doesn’t want that.
Jessey: Now that you’re working with both Nintendo and Sony on bringing The Girl and the Robot to their respective consoles, do you think it would be possible to incorporate the missed stretch goals into the game?
Larochelle: We are looking into it. This really depends if we can get enough funds either with alpha-funding or with some other funding options.
Jessey: Will those of us who didn’t back the Kickstarter campaign be able to get their hands on the art book somehow?
Larochelle: If we notice that there is a good demand for it, than yes we might sell the art book by itself later.
Jessey: When will The Girl and the Robot be available?
Larochelle: We are aiming for the end of 2014.
1. Will the game have one giant dungeon or are there more like in a Zelda game?
Larochelle: Yes, you can think of the game as one giant interconnected dungeon, but some of the puzzles are inspired by Zelda.
2. Will a soundtrack be released?
Larochelle: Yes, before the release of the game actually.
