Japanese Sales — Wii U narrows the gap on PlayStation platforms, 3DS still dominates

Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan.

Media Create and Famitsu have submitted their weekly sales numbers for the Japanese region for the week ending March 11th, 2014. How’s the good ol’ war looking this time around? Both outlets have the Wii U being slightly edged by every Sony platform except the original PSP.

Wii U playing second fiddle to Sony’s platforms has been a steady trend as of late, but it looks like Nintendo is starting to narrow the gap a bit more as we drum up to the release of Mario Kart 8. The 3DS predictably continues its dominance over everything else in the land of the rising sun, though, as it beats out its direct competitor Playstation Vita at an average of 2-to-1.

Media Create Hardware

  1. 3DS: 35.943
  2. Vita: 18.494
  3. PS4: 8.480
  4. PS3: 7.684
  5. Wii U: 7.613
  6. PSP: 2.022
  7. 360: 233

Famitsu Hardware

  1. 3DS: 40.068
  2. Vita: 17.888
  3. PS4: 8.680
  4. PS3: 8.099
  5. Wii U: 8.065
  6. PSP: 1.609
  7. 360: 198
  8. Wii: 108

For software, it looks like Level 5′s 3DS RPG Yo-Kai Watch still has the Japanese populace enamored as it takes the top spot in both Media Create and Famitsu’s estimations. We’re also seeing an uptick in sales for Mario Party: Island Tour as PS Vita’s Sword Art Online cools down.

The Wii U had a couple of games in Famitsu’s top ten this week, including Wii Party U at number 8 and New Super Mario Bros. U at spot number 10. Strangely enough this isn’t reflected in Media Create’s numbers, with the highest Wii U title on their list being Super Mario 3D world at number 11.

Well to be fair. Japan loves handheld gaming. PS4 has only been on the market in Japan for a few short months.

Trend in this case might be a little ambitious.

    • That guy who hates Spike

Tell that to the Xbox 360 in Japan.

      • Rinslowe

Well in context. They need to be games the Japanese want to play…
Typically something Sony and Nintendo knows well enough.

    • Phoenix Maybe

They also like anime (duh), so of course a handheld SAO game would be among the top 10.

    • greengecko007

It’s an understandable problem, but it’s still a problem nonetheless. Sony needs something that caters to the Japanese audience if they want the PS4 to gain momentum again. I know of a lot of upcoming PS4 games, but none strike me as something that would wow the Japanese.

      • ben

The issue is more complex. Japanese devs dont have the budget to make the visual impact games that sony demands for the ps4. Games will get cheaper to make, however, as it stands only the big masou game companies, and Square enix, can afford to make high end graphics games. Japanese devs actually really like working with the vita, they can make games that sell well with nice graphics that dont bankrupt their companies.

        • greengecko007

“Japanese devs dont have the budget to make the visual impact games that sony demands for the ps4.”

I don’t remember reading anything about Sony telling 3rd party developers that their games have to meet certain graphical requirements. Source?

Most Japanese developers don’t spend money pushing graphics because the Japanese audience doesn’t care for graphics nearly as much as the Western audience does. The graphics and art styles of many JRPGs shows this.

          • ben

Japanese audiences don’t care about graphics? Source please?
RPG games like FF 15 for example?
If you think sony is not demanding visual impact games why did second son play at a mere 30fps?

          • greengecko007

FF15 will be a thing when I see it release. That game has been in development for over 8 years, during which it has been renamed from FF13-Versus. At E3 last year they showed the same old footage we’d already seen. Square Enix is also being restructured, so it’s likely they don’t have the money to pursue it.

Most Japanese games aren’t exactly graphical powerhouses. I’m looking at games like One Piece, Naruto, the Tales series, Disgaea, etc. (The list is pretty endless). These are the games the PS4 needs in order to gain more attention from the Japanese audience.

  • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

When you said narrow the gap, I expected PS4 to be a few double digit thousands, as compared to Wii U’s few half dozen thousand or so. (My Numbers are strange, just work with them.) But they really are neck and neck right now!

Soon, it will be our time to shine.

Considering Wii u is getting it’s ass kicked in every other country I would hope they would do decent in there home town. Still 7000 is pretty bad especially considering Mario kart is this month. Since Xbox is now going to sell a Kinectless Xbox now for 399 next month I wonder how much the sales will pick up. I imagine it should help alot. Not in Japan but everywhere else it should

      • ezquimacore

PS is in his home town too.

        • matthew garcia

Yes but it has games that are focused for a western audience

          • ezquimacore

maybe we should wait until Mario Kart is finally out, with the bundle that everyone is expecting.

          • matthew garcia

Wii u really needs north American help more then Japanese help. I just don’t see it selling to well there for some reason. It has such a bad rep in America and it doesn’t deserve it

          • ezquimacore

yeah, thanks to the media the wii u is the antichrist. let’s hope and wait to see if Nintendo can change the perception with their announcements in June.

          • matthew garcia

Nintendo could counter the media with marketing but there not even trying that. They do a little but not enough

          • ben

Why flush money down the toilet? The Media would still make jokes about the wii u. Actually, a lot of the media is slowly changing its tune, now that the PS4 and Xbox have shown their colors and are not as great as they were expected to be.

          • matthew garcia

Not sure on that one ps4 actually has games people want it just the games u don’t want

          • ben

Well, we will see. It seems apparent to me, when people like Patcher are changing their tune on the WII U that the ps4 and xbox have not reached the highs they were expected to.
Game quality wise, Titanfall and second son were very disappointing. Secondson more than titanfall. Secondson did not even play in 60fps, for a game on the future of console gaming that was very disappointing to hardcore gamers. It was also far too easy.

          • matthew garcia

He only changed his tune cuz Nintendo actually gave themselves a realistic sales forecast. Not that crazy as hell 9 million

          • Rich Garriques

more like the media is the antichrist and Nintendo is the one trying to continue originality in gaming.

          • greengecko007

Yep, the media is all about making the Wii U seem as bad as possible.

            http://www.ign.com/videos/2014/05/13/mario-kart-8-is-beautiful-in-slow-motion

The article and video is significant because it emphasizes that Mario Kart 8 looks great, even in slow motion, and shows off the great details, textures, and quick special affects that you would most likely miss while actually racing.

If you look in the comment section, one person claims that they were considering the game and that this article sold them on it.

          • ben

IGN did so much damage to the wii u that most people who go there expect negativity towards nintendo. This article is being read mostly by hate filled sony fan boys.

          • greengecko007

Do you have any proof to back those claims? Of course not. Why don’t you actually click on the link for the article and give it a watch, it’s quite good. Better yet, look into the comments for the video, and you’ll find mostly positive feedback from people who are excited about the game. These “hate filled sony fan boys” that you’re scared of are in the minority, if they are even there.

          • ben

Sorry I misunderstood your initial comment. Reading your comment again your tone is confusing. Are you positive or are you negative in your comment? Because I found more than one person saying they were buying mariokart day one in the comment.s

          • greengecko007

The first part is sarcasm. I do not believe that the majority of the media is slated against Nintendo or the Wii U. Sure there are the occasional ignorant bloggers or websites that nobody actually goes to, but professional websites like IGN that actually matter report truthful news about Nintendo, and often go out of their way just to post articles promoting Nintendo and the Wii U.

IGN could easily just have one article on Mario Kart 8 and continue to edit it as we find out more information; and that’s what they would do if they really wanted to sweep it under the rug in order to hurt Nintendo.

But what they really do is talk about it frequently, promote it with articles, and talk about it in their podcasts.

          • Magnus Gonzalez

If Jose writes an article or review on IGN it’s usually positive towards the Wii U. If anyone else does it tends to be negative. Reviews and articles slant negative on Gamespot, Destructoid, and sadly, you will find more negative articles on MyNintendoNews than you will positive. They employ click bait to the extreme there and this site is trending that way as well. In fact, if you want negative articles you can look at this site’s history over the past month. It’s littered with it.
But you are wrong. IGN does not go out of its way to promote the Wii U. They have been very negative. If you listen to Nintendo Voice Chat that they do weekly, they have Jose who is positive and Peer is as well. Everyone else they have had on there has been very negative about it.

          • greengecko007

Destructoid gave Super Mario 3D World a 10/10.

            http://www.destructoid.com/review-super-mario-3d-world-265323.phtml

Gamespot named A Link Between Worlds their GOTY, which even though it isn’t a Wii U game, shows they aren’t against Nintendo in any way.

Is it really such a foreign concept that people have opinions? I’m so sorry not every major reviewer gave every Nintendo game the 11/10 you obviously think they deserve.

You also obviously worry too much over negative news. News is news whether it’s good news or bad. Would you rather have just paid advertisements and propaganda?

“But you are wrong. IGN does not go out of its way to promote the Wii U.”

That’s hilarious. The multitude of articles they run promoting games speaks against your claim. They don’t have to make these articles. They don’t have to do all of these gameplay videos of Mario Kart 8. Do you know why they do it? Because they are promoting it. If anything media like IGN and GameExplain have promoted Mario Kart 8 better than Nintendo.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Well said.

          • Magnus Gonzalez

            http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/17/does-it-really-matter-if-the-wii-u-fails

            http://www.ign.com/wikis/wii-u/Games%20for%20Everything%20but%20Wii%20U

just a couple I cared to find (they don’t go back very far when searching under Wi U).
Early 2013 there were several articles talking about how dismal the game selection was. All along there has been talk about 3rd party left them, even though they had great 3rd party support at launch (albeit shitty ports). They blamed Nintendo for the Rayman Legends delay somehow. Weird how there are no games for PS4 and Xbone but you don’t have a doom and gloom article every other day like you did for Wii U.
Honestly, once Audrey left it wasn’t until Jose came on board or became more vocal that they had a true champion for the Wii U. But that wasn’t until mid to late 2013. First half last year was so negative.
But some of it was subtle. Like how they wouldn’t give better scores for definitive versions of games on the Wii U (NFSMW and Rayman Legends). It’s disrespectful. Not to mention the crappy review score they gave ZombiU.
Here you had a very good game that utilized the gamepad and was a Wii U exclusive. The game has a 77% on Metacritic. But Greggy boy had to give it a 6.3. That is the type of thing that can really affect sales as ZombiU was kinda Nintendo’s foray into more mature games. They even had a bundle for it and really went out of their way to promote and support it. But when IGN the industry’s biggest media site kills it with a bad score (with stupid retarded logic) that starts the ball rolling with the negative press.
From the Wii U’s inception they’ve been saying it’s last gen tech, barely above a PS360 and that the gamepad sucks. Sorry to break it to you but IGN has been terrible until recently (due to Jose’s efforts)

          • greengecko007

The first article is a positive article explaining that even if the Wii U should fail, Nintendo would not suffer greatly as a company.

The second is a wiki list of multi platform games not coming to the Wii U. It’s not an article, and it’s only purpose is to provide information. There are no opinions presented at all.

And LOL at not having to go back so far to find your links. That article is 4 months old.

“They blamed Nintendo for the Rayman Legends delay somehow.”

Who? It’s weird how neither of your links show this anywhwere.

“Weird how there are no games for PS4 and Xbone but you don’t have a doom and gloom article every other day like you did for Wii U.”

What’s really weird is how you still can’t give me a real doom and gloom aritcle. You’re just spouting nonsense and can’t you obviously can’t back it up.

            Try again.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

When you see a mock account, you know you’re dealing with a troll. I’d say good luck with these types showing proof. Or if they attempt to, it’s an unreliable source anyways. :P

          • greengecko007

It’s weird because even though they are obviously taking their name from you and Magnus, they normally seem pretty reasonable. But this media conspiracy theory so many Nintendo fans have is ridiculous. Some people get their jimmies rustled just because not everything is perfect with a certain company, act like it’s only the bad news being reported, and apparently take offense that anything but good news being reported.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Yeah, I hear ya. Or just getting riled up over what you think about certain news pertaining to their favorite company and then bring out the troll cards. It’s hilarious. I do agree, misguided sounds more respectable, but we all know that the term troll, is the norm of the internet.

People like myself are always going to get heat from people on here and I can accept that, but you’d think that they can at least have a proper and mature discussion. Lol.

          • Darius

not defending that guy but their has been a lot of negative articles. Trust me before i bought a wii u for 4 strait months i looked up articles everyday and it almost caused me to not buy one

          • ezquimacore

100 bad articles are more influential than one mario kart video in slow motion.

          • greengecko007

Well, I gave you a good article, and can give you many more. How about you show me 100 bad articles on the Wii U and maybe I’ll believe the media is purposely trying to tarnish the Wii U. Good luck with that.

          • ezquimacore

I could do that, but you are not important to me so if you really want proof -> google.com

          • greengecko007

Google translate gives me, “I’m full of crap and know that I can’t support my claims with proof”.

Here’s the link for the Wii U section of IGN, the largest reporter of video game related news in the world. Good luck finding even a single article in which the author is obviously slated against Nintendo and tarnishing the Wii U.

            http://www.ign.com/wii-u

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I guess those 100 articles suddenly just disappeared….or never existed in the first place.

          • Officer Raichu

well this wasnt posted here but nintendo has put 4 mk8 commercials on tv(i seen like 3 already XD)

          • Justin McQuillen

In order for NA to get good games, we need the console to do well in Japan. North American developers rarely make games that I want to buy.

          • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Yeah a sea of shooters that come in yearly installments and online pay to play/win type games that make you pay more for content.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Funny enough, people buy them. The irony.

          • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

and trade them in pretty quick too and complain how the games lack anything new which makes these companies try and sell stuff like DLC and impose DRM.. It is a vicious cycle.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t mind DLC if it’s done right and wasn’t locked on the disc like Capcom attempted. Also depends on the price and how much content it has in it. If it’s just the usual map packs or even character packs, not interested. Especially for $10-$15.

          • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

I too don’t mind DLC if done right but you have to admit that many aspects of the “Western” game developer mindset is a cancer to gaming and in the long run doing more harm than good. Day one DLC, DLC for content that should be part of the main game or stupid things like skins, and over-priced DLC. While it appears to be successful now in the long run it will be the demise of some of these game publishers which I believe is starting to happen with their need to blow big budgets to give a “WOW” factor to gamers that buy a game solely on how it looks only to find the game is bland and trade it 6 months later. Have you seen the used game shelves with some of these “western” games. They are filled and have dedicated sections. I guess that is why they need yearly installments because there is no replay value or extensive enough content to keep the short attention span brainwashed by the media people of today in the western market.

      • audi lover

Haha kinticrap no ones gona buy the bone

        • matthew garcia

I’m sure once people see halo 5 the xboners in America will come out by the millions. It’s bound to happen

          • audi lover

Key word America, the xbone is blatantly geared towards that demographic American machine for americans, i cant even swing a cat in my house let alone have two player on kineticrap

          • matthew garcia

I agree but c’mon the game will sell 5 million easily on launch day cuz of what it is. Americans love the game. Sales are sales no matter where it’s at

          • Officer Raichu

no way is it gonna sell 5 million maybe 2 million at most but seriously(halo 4 only did 2 million launch day with a 70 million userbase) xbox one will have around 11 million by then(or less who knows) so it will not get that many sales day 1because it wont be as hyped as titanfall and that didnt even hit a million

          • matthew garcia

Ha lol only 2 million . Took Mario 6 months to reach that. I know halo reach had higher sales then that

          • Officer Raichu

im still standing firm if titanfall couldnt even sell 1 million day 1 neither can halo

          • matthew garcia

Just Found out gta 5 I know it’s multiplatform but it has sold 33 million already now that’s insane

          • Officer Raichu

yeah because gta always sells its like mk of multiplats

          • 504HotBoy

You at it again huh? Bashing Nintendo. SMH…..

          • matthew garcia

Lol just replying to comments. Why don’t u try it feels good lol just kidding. But u know there is stuff wrong with the Wii u. U should give me an example of what your not happy with. With PlayStation I hate how everything is an hd remake right now. Now it’s your turn with Wii u

          • 504HotBoy

I will tell you all the problems I have with the Wii U but mainly Nintendo in general. First I don’t like the name Wii U. Second I don’t like how Nintendo has marketed/promoted the system. I don’t like some of the software choices that’s been made. For instance, Super Mario 3d World, would have preferred a all new Mario game. Not too fond of Retro doing DKCTF, would have wanted them to do new IP or Metroid. There’s other titles I have a problem with. Also don’t like how Nintendo has games in development, but takes forever to make them publicly known. As for as hardware I love the game pad and don’t care too much about the specs because the other 2 8th gen consoles aren’t that big a leap over 7th gen. Which makes Wii U still graphically capable to hold its own. That’s how I truly feel.

          • matthew garcia

Those are good reasons to be critical of Nintendo. I’m critical cuz I have such high standards of Nintendo and they been lacking this gen. I only expect great things from Nintendo nothin less

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Yep. Who would wanna settle for less? The least they can do is bring Star Fox and Metroid on the Wii U, and this holiday, I will buy a damn Wii U. Ball is in your court, Nintendo.

          • matthew garcia

            Exactly man

          • 504HotBoy

Hey if that’s what you want me to believe…..ok.

          • matthew garcia

Sorry dude I’m just not in to Mario or wonderful 101 or pikmin. I want metroid x starfox Zelda.

          • 504HotBoy

Ok Matt. Go to the E3 article and go see what my predictions are.

          • Officer Raichu

zelda this e3 so 1/3 is already covered now if we get a sf and fz

            then….

          • Daniel Gonzalez

The Xbox One is also geared at Europe as well. Not just America. Even saying that, I have little interest in it at this point.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Minus this American. ;P

      • Gabe Hoffman

Remember this is a country that in this day and age usually favors handhelds we are talking about here

        • matthew garcia

Exactly so it doesn’t matter if Wii u and ps4 are neck and neck in Japan cuz ps4 is murdering it in the more populated countries like America

          • Magnus Gonzalez

            spin baby spin

          • lonewolf

127 million of population in Japan so its enough.

          • matthew garcia

So if there is 127 million then 7000 is pretty bad. America has over 300million

          • lonewolf

Its not bad its good considering that the last system seller was back in february. If they release a game per month then it will be great.

        • Muddy

u act like thats a bad thing, the Japanese are known to be significantly more intelligent than Americans are

      • Kyle

w/e I play for the best games, not for sales.

      • Nintendo Dragon

Don’t forget there is a Mario Kart Bundle coming out soon. I’m sure there are people holding out for it to come out. I’m also sure there are people holding out for the inevitable Smash Bros bundle.

      • Jon

but you’d expect the Wii U to drop in sigh of MK 8 as people would be more waiting for the bundles that come out on the 30th

    • http://Nintendo.com/ Nintendo of America

Please understand, that your bodies are not ready for Mario Kart 8, so we have delayed it until winter 2014.

    • greengecko007

The Playstation 4 is lacking games that cater to the Japanese market at the moment, which although understandable given that it’s only 2 months old there, is a problem that needs to be corrected in order for the PS4 to succeed. With Mario Kart 8 and Wii U bundles coming out in just a few weeks in entirely possible for the Wii U to overtake PS4 sales in Japan.

I’m not rooting for any one company beat another though, and I hope both Sony and Nintendo can gain some ground in their home country.

      • lonewolf

        Actually ps4 just lacks games.

        • greengecko007

There’s a few titles already out that interest me, but as a college student on a budget I just don’t have the money for a PS4. I’ll definitely get one eventually.

          • Rinslowe

It’s got all the right ingredients. I guess you can already see that. But if you’re on a budget, waiting for another 12 months or more would provide much more value for your money…

        • Nintenjoe82

and a few of the features promised at the reveal…..

      • Rinslowe

I have no doubts whatsoever, those titles are coming. And like the PS3, will do well overall in Japan as well. Sony may have taken strategic steps to gain traction in other markets. But in the long run, they’re not about to abandon the home ground. If anything they’ve been quite happy about the profit margins made on PS3 and it’s software. So are just playing a longer game at home.

      • companyoflosers

japan isnt the large stage for gaming that it used to be. due to various factors the gaming population in japan has been around the same number for nearly a decade. the rest of the world in contrast has had an amazing amount of growth the number of gamers. not only has the population on young individuals who like to game increased, but the age range of gamers has widened as well, while in japan, that isnt the case. what happens in japan is people’s kids start gaming and go on doing so until high school or college. once they enter the work force, alot of them stop and prioritize their careers and families once they have them. their values are different than western countries in the way that they put their careers and families above everything else and dont make time for too many other things like we do. thats the norm anyways, there are im sure exceptions. the population crisis over there doesnt do anything to help either as their overall population is in decline thanks to both sexes beginning to not want to start families as early. the point is, japan isnt a big deal to gaming anymore and consoles rarely need to succeed there in order to succeed as a whole. north america and europe and MAYBE china soon is where a company can make or break a console.

  • J_Joestar

What were last week’s numbers again? feels less like Wii U closed the gap and more like it is holding steady and the PS4 is the one that is dropping.

    • Mario

      Looks like it.

    • matthew garcia

Truth is ps4 is turning to a western console. It was done on purpose cuz Sony new Japanese were turning away from consoles and going mobile. So Sony went where the console market is stronger and that’s in America and Europe. That’s why ps4 launched in north America months before Japan.

      • 504HotBoy

Consoles sell well in Japan if the software is there. For the past few years PS3 have sold well in Japan. Maybe not as well as PS2. But still good. PS4 is not selling well cause there are no serious games to cater to Japanese market. Once those titles come out. The sales will rise again. If titles come out consistently back to back , sales will steady remain strong. Wii U in the same boat. Sales will increase in Japan for Wii U once Mario Kart 8 is released. But if they want to keep steady strong sales, they need to drop them AAA Japanese titles back to back. Other wise sales will decline after a while.

        • matthew garcia

I can agree with that. But for example even Japanese rpg developers are taking ideas for a more western game . Dark souls for example. They just know where the money is at right now and it’s not in japan

          • ben

Dark souls sold very well in Japan. It was a game made for Japan. Please stop talking out of your ass.

          • matthew garcia

Dark souls plays more like a western game to me. It’s not even turnbased

          • 504HotBoy

Lol. It’s a action rug man. There’s plenty of Japanese action rpgs and they’re not turn based.

          • matthew garcia

Plays more like skyrim and the witcher then final fantasy and the tales games

          • 504HotBoy

How old are you dude? There are old school action/rpgs dating back to the 3rd gen (8-Bit era) and 4th gen (16-bit era), let alone the 5th Gen (32-bit era) and so forth, that Dark Souls take elements from. Japanese action/rpgs, not western. You must be one of them new generation gamers? How could you have not known this? You ever played 1988s The Legend Of Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link? Which pretty much set the blueprint for all action/rpgs.

          • matthew garcia

Sorry dude but the first rpg’s ever were western cuz dungeons and dragons started it all how old are u.

          • 504HotBoy

Dude you just totally ignored everything I just said. I see that’s a habit with you, cause this is the 3rd post you didn’t comprehend on what was stated. Dungeons & Dragons have nothing to do with Japanese action/rpgs or Dark Souls. You think bringing that in our debate, because it’s old would justify your argument? Once again Dark Souls is modeled after old school Japanese action/rpgs.

          • matthew garcia

Baulders gate is more like it and that’s western

          • 504HotBoy

Ok we agree to disagree. You think one thing and I think another!

          • matthew garcia

Lol I can agree with that

          • matthew garcia

Definitely need to get your gaming history straight dungeons and dragons laid the foundation of rpg gaming and its not Japanese

  • X3Charlie

As long as they all have healthy player bases and steady growth it’ll be good for gaming.

  • daeglyth

When’s Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment coming to NA?

    • Shota

summer of 2014 but only digital though

      • daeglyth

Do you know if they are going to use the same voice actors from the dubbed anime?

        • Shota

yes ;) can’t wait to play!

  • Gabe Hoffman

Mario 3D World at Number 11 that game has legs

    • Rinslowe

If Kart does what Nintendo is hoping and provides a catalyst for sales. Then it’ll just keep running…

  • Magnus Gonzalez

Ouch PS4 doing very poorly considering its age. Damn, this gen console sales are simply not going to approach last gens. Totally different environment.

    • daeglyth

I think at this point it has more to do with the software than the hardware. Also, the lack of reverse compatibility is a killer. Despite Playstation Now on the horizon.

    • matthew garcia

Actually consoles are selling better then ever except Wii u. Ps4 is by far outpacing ps3 in the same timeframe and so is Xbox1. Wii u is the only one going backwards compared to the wii

      • Rinslowe

It’s a bit early to be waving that banner around. If the 3DS proved anything in terms of sales no’s. Things aren’t they way they used to be. So who really knows what the landscape is looking like 4-5 years from today.

        • matthew garcia

Nobody is claiming victory here just saying ps4 is on a good pace. He’ll it sold a million in north America alone on launch day. Console gaming is not going away

          • Rinslowe

No-one is implying that claim. Just saying. 3DS has proved, things aren’t as predictable as we may hope them to be. For better or worse. :)

          • matthew garcia

            Definitely :)

          • lonewolf

            The ps3 proved that too.

      • Magnus Gonzalez

meh, with the aggressive price point of the PS4 it was expected to sell well. Now that those initial sales from launch have occurred sales have plummeted. There isn’t anything on the horizon I can see that will be an impetus for an increase until the usual holiday sales boost. Xbox One has SHIPPED 5 million consoles not sold. It is very much in third place and forced to ditch Kinect and drop the price. They are in a funk. Only a troll would point to the ‘success’ of the Xbone to show how poorly the Wii U is doing.

        • matthew garcia

Lol all I said was I wonder what te sales will be like with the price drop not sure where your getting all that other shit

          • Magnus Gonzalez

don’t see where you mentioned price drop in your responses

          • matthew garcia

Look at my first comment up top

          • Magnus Gonzalez

yeah, don’t see anywhere that I responded to your comment about price drops so you are off I think.

          • matthew garcia

U didn’t respond to it what I’m saying is that it was my first initial comment I posted on this forum

        • matthew garcia

I think u forget also that Xbox sold over 300000 in the u.s. last month and Wii u only sold 70000. Xbox will eventually pass Wii u

          • Magnus Gonzalez

yeah, it’s coming off of a ‘system seller’ Titanfall bundle and it barely moved the needle. Let’s see where Mario Kart 8 does, because u obviously forgot about that. The lead will grow by a lot, most likely to surpass PS4 this summer

          • matthew garcia

Ha lol now I know your in denial. I own all 3 consoles so it makes no difference to me but I do feel the Wii u will come last. It’s already doing much worse then GameCube in the same timeframe and GameCube came in last. Mk8 is no miracle that will save Wii u.

        • 504HotBoy

Matthew Garcia must obviously don’t like Nintendo. He’s going hard on them. It’s kind of funny when you think about it. In all honesty if you love games. It’s cool to be a more of a fan for one over the other. But at the same time you would be a fool to limit yourself to one brand. You’re missing out on a lot of great titles. Some would say I don’t want to play those (insert insult here) games anyway. Ok yeah, get a clue.

          • matthew garcia

I do love games and I do love Nintendo lol I’m just waiting for x and Zelda. What’s wrong with being hard on them are you and Nintendo dating

          • 504HotBoy

It’s on thing to be critical. Which I myself have been critical of 8th gen consoles, mainly Wii U and PS4. That’s because I own both. Never said anything critical about Microsoft or XBOX One. Because I didn’t buy one yet. So I can’t speak on its faults. Only thing I’m guilty of is stating that 8th gen not that big a leap over 7th gen and I truly in my heart stand by that. But anyway you should read some of your comments, you come off as a crazy Sony fan that defends Sony at all cost, but constantly bash Nintendo. Anyone can say they love something. But your actions show something totally different.

          • matthew garcia

Actually Wii u is struggling so why can’t I be critical. Sony as a company is struggling cuz they can’t sale computers and tv’s for shit but there gaming division is doing great so I don’t have much to say on that. It lacks games but it’s only been out since November same with Xbox. Wii u came out first cuz it wanted to get the sales jump but it backfired and got passed by ps4 in 6 months so of course I’m going to be critical cuz Nintendo is not doing there job. I spent 350 on Wii u and I’m not happy with my purchase I expected more.

          • 504HotBoy

That’s not what I meant. For instance if I come in here being all negative towards Nintendo, every chance I get, even when it’s a positive I still go out my way to turn it to a negative. But then I brag on Sony or Microsoft and defend them even when there are facts thrown at them, constantly comparing them to Nintendo. Then it’s more deeper than just being critical. More like I’m a fan of one brand that’s trying to bash and tear down another brand. And that’s just what it is. There is no way around it.

          • Rinslowe

            I agree.

It’s a call sign of the console zealot. But they’re just as loopy as genuine fanboys. Feigned subjectivity is pretty easy to spot.

          • 504HotBoy

Exactly I can name and expose all of them. Daniel Gonzalez, Oontz, Matthew Garcia, Purple, and a few other clowns. But if that’s what gets them through the day, I’m happy for them.

          • matthew garcia

Obviously we get under your skin for just being honest. All u have to do is not reply to us. We’re just giving our opinions. I never resort to cussing or name calling unless it’s done first on me so I do it respectfully and if it bothers u then it sounds like u have a personal problem that u just have to deal with

          • 504HotBoy

LMAO…..no it’s not that, but I think my honesty pisses yall off. Hey if you put your self out there. I will call you on it and expose you. I have nothing against any of you. Im just speaking my mind. Hey if you want to deny it, that’s on you.

          • matthew garcia

Hey I post first and y’all reply to me. Y’all always come after us lol

          • 504HotBoy

            It’s all in fun though!

          • matthew garcia

I agree I think it’s fun but at the same time I know I’m saying things that is pissing people off but u can’t really say I’m always wrong. I know I’m wrong sometimes but that’s ok cuz we all are including you. There is some truth to what I say though

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Haha. True story. Lol.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Yep. Looks like you got under their skin. Judging by the comments they’ve made above. Lol. Agree 100%. They are a sour bunch. :P

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Well said. The fact that we are even mentioned in this, is just another way of saying “you guys piss me off with your comments.” Indeed. If people can’t stand talking to you or even reading your comments. Move along. Though, if it helps them get through their day, then I’m happy for them. I don’t ever recall cursing or even insulting them unless they come with it first. I find it amusing that they care this much over what we have to say. Personal problems indeed.

          • matthew garcia

Yeah I know he called out a hit list lol. We never say a list of names and say these are all the fanboys and call them a bunch of clowns lol

          • Daniel Gonzalez

It only shows who the real fanboys are on this site. That or just a few sour grapes that have a hard time ignoring comments that bother them. It sure doesn’t piss me off one bit, but them coming into my comments on a daily basis and even yours, it shows it gets to them. Lol.

          • matthew garcia

            Fa sho man

          • Rinslowe

I’m reading all the anti below and I’m like, wow. You’ve struck a nerve with that comment. Lol.
Understandable though, if I was on the receiving end of that same comment – I would be a little “touchy” too most probably.
And yet, you make a good point. :P

          • Daniel Gonzalez

What you consider missing out on, is different for each individual. Of course, preferences and taste have plenty to do with it. If someone told me, you’re missing out on Super Mario 3D World. Just an opinion to me. From my standpoint, I don’t feel I missed out on anything. Lol. Besides, it’s not like we can’t purchase a Wii U and the games later on in its life. Which is what I did with the Wii.

          • 504HotBoy

I hear what you’re saying Daniel, but either way, not owning multiple consoles, you do miss out on games that may be exclusive to that platform. If you can’t afford multiple consoles, that’s understandable. I know there are kids, who’s parents will only buy them one console, so yeah they do miss out. But whatever console you have , like you said , enjoy it. If you’re fortunate enough to own more than one system, enjoy them all. My whole point is, don’t limit yourself if you’re able to afford more than one console, by stupid bias ignorance. But if that’s how you get down, more power to you!

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I have a good budget, so for the record, I can at any time, but choose not to. I buy what I desire first, and this gen,it was the PS4. Personally, I like my PS4 and will most likely continue so for years. Though, when the games that I want come to the Wii U, it will sure be in my living room being used just as much. Xbox One? Well…..maybe. I’m still iffy on it. I don’t see how that’s biased if I have a personal preference, but alrighty. No skin off my back. Lol. Happy gaming.

          • 504HotBoy

What you said just now isn’t biased at all. I think you know what I mean and what statements I mean when I say that. I may get a Xbox One if they impress me this E3. If the rumors are true about Microsoft having a multi-game deal with Platinum Games and a Viewtiful Joe style action game being the first of the deal. I will go out and buy one immediately. In the mean time, I gladly enjoying both PS4 & Wii U. Just want newer games to be released on both platforms. Watch Dogs for PS4 and Mario Kart 8 for Wii U is already on pre-order. Just 2 more weeks.

        • oontz

Sales have plummeted in North America? Check your facts cause they’re wrong. The only region that’s suffering is japan.

          • Magnus Gonzalez

Through 12/31 they sold 4.2 million consoles. That’s in 1.5 months. Very good.
Through 3/31 they had sold 7 million. That is 3 full months AND a japan launch on 2/22.
            Try to keep up:
In 1.5 months they sold 4.2 million
In 3 months and adding the home market in Japan they sold 2.8 million. That’s the information we have to work with from their quarterly financials as Sony doesn’t release monthly unit sales. But from my vantage point their sales have plummeted. And they continue to go down. I imagine the next three months might yield only another 1.5 million as there is no additional major region launches and there are zero games.
            So check YOUR facts

          • oontz

I wasn’t speaking about any one console. I was stating that console sales in general are up compared to past generations in the same time frame.

          • oontz

I wasn’t talking about any particular console, only that console sales in general are up when compared to previous generations within the same time frame.

    • oontz

In japan, yes. World wide, no.

  • Derek

Is yo kai watch ever going to come to North America?

    • J_Joestar

      Still waiting on PWvsPL

  • Daniel Gonzalez

The usual articles that produce the click bait effect. Awesome. Closing the gap or not, Wii U’s overall sales are still pretty bad in comparison to PS4 and even Xbox One sadly. Welp, back to reality, or in this case, the forums. :)

    • Magnus Gonzalez

you do realize Wii U has outsold the Xbone overall and has a system seller coming out in two weeks? Or are you going to retract and now say..but…but the Xbone has only been out six months! ha ha. Then don’t say ‘overall’ troll

      • matthew garcia

It has not out sold Xbox. Xbox is catching up. Wii u has been out a year longer

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Touchy fella aren’t ya? I don’t even own an Xbox One, so not sure why you’d even think that I care that much about it. Even so, show me where it says that Wii U has outsold Xbox One. If you’re gonna call out people, at least bring the proof to the table. Lol. Also, making up a mock account defeats the your attempt at calling others a troll. Nice try though? I can say overall, don’t be so upset because that’s the reality of the sales. Bye now. :P

        • Magnus Gonzalez

you and your girlfriend Garcia are in denial. Microsoft just recently announced 5 million consoles SHIPPED. Nintendo just announced 6.17 sold through March. I know you are challenged but 6,17 is more than 5. You see?

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I guess you aren’t too good at reading. Matthew got it. Must of stuck a nerve in you. We’re talking about sales weekly/monthly. Wii U is doing horrible compared to Xbox One and even PS4. Now, show me sales that shows that Wii U is outselling them? I know you’re challenged, but I have faith that you can pull through. Or just have a hissy fit. Either/or is fine by me. ;P

          • Magnus Gonzalez

“The usual articles that produce the click bait effect. Awesome. Closing the gap or not, Wii U’s overall sales are still pretty bad in comparison to PS4 and even Xbox One sadly. Welp, back to reality, or in this case, the forums. :)”

These are your words. “Wii U’s OVERALL sales”. Not weekly, not daily, not monthly, not quarterly. You said “overall”.

So spin away troll. Your words. You are wrong. The Wii U has higher OVERALL sales than Xbox so you are wrong. How’s that crow you’re eating?. Nice try

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Overall sales was pertaining to PS4. Xbox One, however, will certainly pass Wii U in sales regardless whether it’s a bad system or not. You can spin this however you like, but you know it’s going to happen, so no use being upset over the inevitable. I hope that crow your eating is tasty enough to your liking. Nice try again. I look forward to your next response. I’m sure it’ll have me chuckling. As I said, touchy fella. ;P

          • Zelda79

I agree with this comment, solely because it’s hilarious to call someone a troll and yet go out of your way, to make a troll account. Not to mention, that it’s down right pathetic to say the least. Besides that, I could care less who is wrong.

          • Magnus Gonzalez

I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Exactly how will Xbone pass the Wii U when it is a) already behind b) Wii U is coming out with one of it’s massive system seller games Mario Kart 8 c) another system seller in Smash Brothers d) most likely revealing Zelda U and Pokeman games at E3??????
What will push Xbone sales? This price drop? Maybe, but not enough to keep pace. Halo 5? I could see that doing very well, but only if they make it an Xbone exclusive and for some reason I doubt they ignore the 80 million 360 owners. And when is that coming out? If it comes out this year then it was rushed and they are desperate. It will suck. If 2015, then the Wii U should have enough games and interest to keep it ahead in 2014. Let’s also not forget that the Wii U can also announce a price drop this holidays and I can’t see either of the others having that ability so that could also favor the Wii U.
I am not going to argue about PS4. It’s a solid machine and will have the most games and best graphics. But Xbone is another story.
Don’t worry, I’ll keep reminding you every quarter when the Wii U keeps its lead over Xbone. Maybe well into the future it might catch up but I don’t see it happening in 2014.

    • Guest

Pity you don’t spend nearly as much time in the forums as you say you do. Spare us all your idiocy here. Lurking you say? Guess it’s harder to troll in the forums than you thought huh.

  • Magnus Eriksson

Future of console gaming doesnt look too bright. Not only for Nintendo. Next gen will look very different from this.

    • ben

The wii U is about to sell a lot of consoles in Japan. Expect to see 20 000 a week from June onwards.

    • Officer Raichu

yeah 8th gen is my opinion is a lot worse
theres like no games and not a huge graphical leap
plus 3d parties arent as great as they use to be(activision i think will be better with destiny as long as it isnt milked)

  • Purple

Dang… the wii u is still behind the PS3. Its over for Wii U. Its officially a virtual Boy. Nobody wanted that crap. Its bombing. Dang Nintendo stop wasting your time. Get uour head out of your rear end already.

I know this is nothing more than trolling but, please stop.
Stop worrying about dumb shit and live your life.
I don’t understand why people play numbers instead of games. What happened to gaming? What happened to REAL gamers? When I was growing up, we didn’t know or care about what games system was preforming well or not. We just wanted the experience. We didn’t just follow the crowd nor did we buy games or consoles just because our friends where getting them. We actually liked the mystery of unknown/underrated games.

Anybody complaining about how many units a game/system is selling or uses that as an excuse to not buy a game/or console is NOT a gamer. It shows you’re a weak minded individual who can’t make a decision for yourself.

      • Purple

Man, youre absolutely right. I dont know when or how it became about how much a company profits. I could care less. Just give me games. I just commented like that out of sarcasm. Im so tired of reading articles like this. Its sad that there are more articles like this on gaming websites rather than game reviews!!!!

      • Docforexit347

I agree I really don’t care about the sales, But I do care about the hardware, E3 should show us the Money (or them our money) XD

    • Denvy

Do you know anything about the virtual boy? Wii U has sold a lot more than that ever did.

      • Purple

It just seems like longer between 1st party nintendo games because of lack of 3rd party support but even still …. Nintendo releases more 1st party quality games than anyone else

  • LukeMM95

A little off topic but I just love the look of Japanese cities at night. So colourful and full of life.

Here comes a new challenger: Quentyn!
    Welcome to Wii U Daily!

  • LordYukYuk

Looks more like Sony is meeting Nintendo at the depths rather than Nintendo rising to their levels. Sad news for console gaming in Japan.

Hopefully the release of Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors after that helps Wii U become the best selling console there this summer.

  • Squid

Oh my god, I was in that area of the picture in this article. Not in the photo, but I’ve been to the place.

  • lonewolf

Have anyone seen the mario kart 8 commercials?

  • Officer Raichu

“Nintendo games are notorious for low preorders”
Where do you get this data from?

      • Officer Raichu

mario 3d world, new super mario bros u, mk7,pokemon x and y, ,melee

        • Justin Carlson

So… I’m still waiting for some data.

          • Officer Raichu

ok fine i got it from vgchartz and ign

          • Justin Carlson

Thanks! I just took a look at vgchartz for the first time. It looks like Mario Kart 8 preorders should do about double what Mario 3D World did.

          • Officer Raichu

yeah its got almost 40000 direct week and is still getting over 30000 it should have about 250000 at least fw in america

  • 504HotBoy

Some of these guys act like Japan sales don’t matter. Cause they’re bringing up U.S. and Europe. But Japan sales matters just as much. Especially for people like me, because I’m way more into Japanese games than Western games. Wii U having a higher install base than PS4 , will most likely get games like Namco’s Tales series developed on it before a PS4 or XBOX One. It depends on how you look at it. Same could be said for how whatever games that’s bigger in the western market would get made on PS4 first. It depends on your preference.

    • matthew garcia

Besides exclusives nothing has come first to Wii u. They learned from Rayman that nothing sales on Wii u

      • 504HotBoy

What you talking about Matt? What does that have to do what anything I said?

        • ben

He’s clutching at straws. Hands up how many of the Nintendo Wii u fans on this site bother to go to a Sony/Xbox page and troll? ……

          • mikeybruises

You know I never understood that. Why would anyone go to gaming website for a console they don’t own, with the motivation to either dissuade people from purchasing a console, or if they have already done so convince them they’ve made a bad decision. I hope all the consoles do well. I own Xbox 360 and a Wii U, but it never crossed my mind to go to a Sony Playstation website to see how the other half is living, let alone troll people. Even when I didn’t own my 360 I did not do this. I think they’re are a lot of miserable people walking this earth with very empty lives craving…starving for attention.

      • Fierce-Deity Link

im pretty sure that the wii u version sold decently considering the install base.. besides, a lot of wii u owners were salty about it not being exclusive and the hype died down by the time it was released… if i remember correctly the ps3 version sold a bit more but not by a lot..

  • Justin McQuillen

This actually indicates that Wii U will be slightly outselling Sony’s stuff at the end of the month. Sweet!

  • Nintenjoe82

If Nintendo are serious about MK8 they’ll advertise worldwide during the World Cup and Champions League final.

  • DragonSilths

The 3DS still is unstoppable lol. It will launch further ahead with Smash Bros, Pokémon Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire and MH4U this year and early next year.

  • shanafan

Why does the article say “week ending March 11th”? Do these results come out this late?

  • janco tianno

Well… for me it’s not something soooo cool because in Japan, the house of technology, 3DS is selling well, but PS4 and Wii U are … I don’t know..
Maybe next week PS3 will outsell PS4.

    • janco tianno

Is it maybe because there are no exclusive games for PS4 that can justify the investment ?

  • Ultrasyd

    That picture !

  • Stephen Macneil

Why does this site always use Japan’s Risiing Sun flag? The editors are obviously oblivious to how offensive this flag is in Asia. Think swastika…

    • oontz

Agreed. Those were some dark times.

  • Michael Ocampo

I think the sales for Wii U are normal but the PS4′s seem to be down, that’s what narrowed the gap I think. (Not Trolling).

  • Aamir Islam

Why use the former Japanese Empire flag as the thumbnail? The new flag(if you consider it new) is a red dot on a white background.

  • Logan Wayman

    Keep it coming, Wii U!

  • InterTreble

Can’t wait for a comment from one of the well known trolls of this site (aka idiots) in which they speak about the “great 8000 sales” of PS4 and the “poor 8000 sales” of Wii U. And above all, can’t wait for another one claiming they are 8600 for PS4… :)

    • oontz

You are the idiot. The only one trolling right now is you. That’s the irony of your posts, and that’s what makes you the idiot.

      • Guest

        ….

      • InterTreble

I didn’t call you. If you feel like called, then the problem is yours, not mine. Come back to school and learn how to behave… What a shame… For you and your friend ;)

        • oontz

          L O L

Where did I say you called me anything? Paranoid much?
I was saying the only one trolling is you with your post…

          Get over it.

  • Leo

Time for Sony to hit the red alarm in Japan.

The Hinomaru has been around since the 7th century. Even the earliest officially recorded flag was in the 16th century.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Atakebune3.jpg

      Well before imperialism.

Furthermore, the swastika has been around since ancient times. Although some claim a “left-sided” swastika and a “right-sided” swastika mean completely different things, they dont. The symbolic reference is *supposed* to represent clock motion and counter-clock motion, like Yin and Yang represent to opposing sides to one picture.

    Like I said before:

Wow Wii U is doing better in Japan than America.
