Japanese sales – Child of Light makes the top ten, 3DS dominating again

Wii U sales

This week’s sales for Japan are in from Media Create and it’s surprising to see Child of Light, a western-made RPG by Ubisoft gracing the top ten list in not one, but two spots. The unfortunate side of that is that it’s for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of the game. Child of Light on the Wii U did not crack the top 20 list at all.

Despite that, sales for the Nintendo 3DS continue to skyrocket, as both Kirby Triple Deluxe and Mario Golf: World Tour perform well. Topping the list is Yokai Watch, which has maintained that spot for several weeks running. Japan seems to be enamored with the NES Remix series as well, as a collection of both NES Remix 1 & 2 managed to claim the eighth spot in the list for the top ten. The Wii u also saw a nice jump in sales from the previous week, bringing it back up to its average of 8k consoles a week.

Wow looks like PS4 has had a large drop, and Wii U only sold 3000 less, Interesting, and 3DS is selling as good as ever.

Will be interesting to see what happens when MK8 releases, but i also hope that PS4 sells, because Sony needs money if they want to survive!

Also nice to see that Vita is doing good.

    • darkcreap

I don’t know why this week they don’t put last weeks sales in brackets.

      • jjbredesen

To hide PS4’s huge drop xD Can’t make Wii U look to good :P

        • Rinslowe

Haha. That was underhanded of you there JJ…
Of course you may just be right. But I may also have to label you a typical Nintendo fanboy now. Grrr >:(
          Nintendo – fan – boy!!!!
          :P

*should never drink too much cola too early in the day…. I’m still learning.
          :)

          • jjbredesen

Incase you did not notice the comment had a sarcastic tone to it :P I like PS4 and Nintendo, and right now i am still frustrated with Nintendo, and now i also understood your Nintendo- fan – boy thing, so now me comment has no purpose xD

( A Nintendo Fan that is a boy xD)

          • Rinslowe

Yes sarcasm was detected… Hence the sarcasm.
            :)

    • palomino blue

Closing the gap on ps4. Interesting indeed.

    • Rinslowe

Didn’t the Wii U jump up by 3k?

      • jjbredesen

Yes it did, was on 5K now 8K

    • Jon

also the Wii U had about a 3k increase compared to last week.

    • Shota

i have since launch. great piece of hardware.

    • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

You did it again, JJ. Took the most voted comment, without even trying!

      • jjbredesen

haha, the art of writing comments is a tough one xD Be fast to comment, don’t act like a fanboy or offend people and use good point with few words and try to add some humor or a meme as icing on the cake ;)

  • Jack5221

3DS is going to remain on top the rest of this year. Especially with Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby coming out in November. I’ve been wanting remakes of those games for the longest time now. :D

    • thedeciderU

yeah nintendo is really hammering it with games. i wish the wii u were the same. hopefully we’ll hear good news of this very thing during E3.

    • Mario

I can’t believe they’re remaking those. Emerald was my first main pokemon title on the Gameboy Advance. And it was one wicked game.

      • Officer Raichu

knowing the remakes they will probly take aspects from ermerald and put thew in ar and os

        • Mario

What about Rayquaza? Will he be in both versions?

          • Officer Raichu

most likely like ruby and sapphire
i mean suicune wasnt in gold and silver just crystal but added him to hg and ss

          • Mario

Oh. Okay. I guess that makes sense.

          • greengecko007

Suicune was available in Gold, Silver and Crystal version. In Crystal version suicune was a set encounter, rather than a roaming legendary.

          • greengecko007

Considering Rayquaza was in all of the original 3rd gen Hoenn games, I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to catch it.

  • Ducked

You can tell Japanese PS4 owners are desperate to get Japanese style games with Child of Light getting in the top 10. CoL does look really interesting and I’ve heard good things about it. I might actually buy it. Wii U sales got a small 3k increase.

I like how you added both 3DS LL and 3DS together. Makes it easier for us.

    • DK_Hadouken

Child of Light is a masterpiece really. I’m replaying it on hard now.

      • HungryMetroid

about how long did your first playthrough take?

        • DK_Hadouken

About 12 hours-ish. I didn’t try to get everything. I wanted to know where the story went. But now I’m taking my time and it is indeed a bit unfair on hard.

          • HungryMetroid

thanks :) I tried the demo on ps3 and liked it so i’ll probably get it for my wii u sometime.

      • ben

I played it on hard from the outset. I’m glad i did! It has taken me almost 25 hours so far.

  • Lil J Moore

I would expect CoL to sell better on PS because Ubisoft promoted it on ps with special deals.

  • ActivesiN

come on Wii U owners….buy Child of Light

    • Ducked

      These sales are “Japanese” sales.

      • ActivesiN

…people in japan own Wii U also lol

        • Ducked

Yes, but they don’t read English

          • ActivesiN

so the ps3 and ps4 owners in japan read english but the Wii U owners dont?

          • WT Herrod Jr.

I think he meant your comment wouldn’t reach their eyes, not that the Japanese market game used English instructions/captions.

          • ActivesiN

            that’s great,
doesnt really change the fact that there are more Wii U owners in Japan then PS4 owners
and yet the PS4 version broke the top 10 list
so im just dissapointed, considering Child of Light is a great game and the Wii U owners there are missing out

          • ben

It only had a sony physical release. I believe it sold a lot more on the wii u in Japan. We just cannot know digital downloads.

          • TalesOfBS

Wii U is digital only you dumb fuck. They have no numbers.
PS3 and PS4 got a physical deluxe edition with cross buy.

Pretty much Ubisoft doing everything they can to save the PS4 there, yet Wii U gets the lesser even when the system have the potential to move a lot more units.
That is third party support for you.

    • ben

This is only physical copies sold.
Child of light did very well on the eshop in Japan.

    • Diablo130356

I was going to buy Child of Light on the Wii U as a pre order, but first I couldn’t FIND it on the Nintendo E shop and secondly from Ubisoft it came with extra content for FREE!
So I bought it for the same price on the PC from Ubisoft direct, WITH the extra content AND it plays with an Xbox controller and a mouse as the second player Igniculus controller!
Nintendo need all the help they can get with the Wii U, but still they don’t advertise or offer incentives to buy a new game like this on their console???
Nintendo themselves are mainly responsible for the demise of their own console by their own indifference, which is baffling.

      • ActivesiN

really?. for me it was on the front page of the Eshop
thats pretty sweet that the PC version came with extra content though

  • Frankie

Why did you not report on the promotion of recommended titles by Nintendo and the free game? Both of these contributed to the increase in sales this week and a decrease last week. Also Golden Week started.

  • Mr Ninty

oehh. wiiu rising and ps4 droping, get your sony is doomed hats ready folks :p

    • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

Yeah, they deserve it, milking MJ dry, and Amazing Spiderman 2 was awful.

Unlrelated, i looked for a “Sony is Doomed” Gif, couldn’t find any, looked to see if there were any “Nintendo is Doomed” ones, found this:

      http://www.badgames.it/sites/default/files/images/Nintendo%20doomed%20meme.png

      • MerryBlind .

        why the monkey?

Edit: Nevermind… for some reasons I read all 3 first years, but not the 3284 assuming it was going to be 2014, as in ‘today’.

        • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

Probably cause by that point, we would’ve killed ourselves 20 times over.

          • MerryBlind .

Yeah I know I got it.

          • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

            Got it? Good

          • Mario

            Lol.

          • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

            Lawl.

          • Rinslowe

            That’s a sunny outlook.
            :P

          • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

            I try

  • iamserious

Damn. Japan IS moving away from console gaming. Sony and Nintendo fans of console gaming better watch out.

    • FutureFox

Its kind of like what you see with cars (in the U.S at least). People us to be all about the big SUV until the depression. Now its been smaller eco-friendly cars on more people’s minds.

      • Jon

I am assuming Gas prices is the reason for that one. lol I remember being a kid and seeing gas at 40-50 cents a Liter

        • FutureFox

Gas prices for sure. There was also a bit of a fear about SUVs tipping over. Though that might have been before the Great Recession.

    • oontz

People in japan still game in arcades. Think about that, when’s the last time you went to am arcade?

      • ben

They don’t really. Sorry, but those places are only filled with otaku type gamers and they are not full like they used to be, They smell bad too.

You are probably mixing up game centers with pachinko.

        • oontz

ummm, yeah they do. I live in Asia and have been to Japan many times. I have been to their arcades and enjoyed their offerings. They aren’t the only asian country to still support that medium.

          • oontz

My main point is that Arcades are pretty much non-existent in other regions, such as North America.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

I take it you’re from Asia?

      • Diablo130356

UK arcades are different, people don’t go there to play games because they are mainly built around the gambling business model with slot machines. You often find them very near to the bookies to catch the casual small gambler, rather than the casual gamer, so non gamblers just don’t go in.

        • ben

Japan is basically the same now. Kids go there for the photobooths

  • Decker Shado

Anyone else notice that Child of Light sold exactly the same for both PS3 and PS4? …any word on how they came to those numbers?

    • NintendoFan

      Cross buy I believe.

    • Madmagican

…hrmm, could be cross buy or collective total

It’s difficult to believe they sold the exact same amount

  • Blue Hernandez

Damn I might have to get a Vita for Sword Art Online… Is the Vita region locked?

    • Ibi Salmon

      No.

  • Mario

Wow. A digital title actually got into this list.

    • Rinslowe

Yeah I was quite surprised by that as well. A little win for VC huh!
      :)

  • Leo

The industry is in serious trouble. Those numbers are abysmal. Nintendo at least has the 3DS commanding the business and hopefully Mario Kart will boost the WiiU for a while, but Sony is in huge trouble as both Vita and PS4 are underperforming, with no change on this trend at sight. I wonder what those companies will do to change this apocalyptic scenario in Japan.

  • Leo

It would be interesting if WiiUDaily put side by side the numbers of each week for a proper base of comparison.

  • Nintendoom!

Child of Light is such a terrible game.

    • ben

I think it has a polarizing effect on people. I think it is the best UBi game I have ever played.

      • Enrico C

        I think the same
        ^_-

    • LordYukYuk

I’m enjoying it. It’s quite the competent RPG and a stunning piece of visual art. The writing, however, is atrocious. The rhyming gimmick is very poorly executed and has little to no rhythm. Outside of that, nearly ever sentence reeks of pretension that makes it difficult to truly love the game. It’s such a shame, the visual aspect is so strong that had the designers made the characters silent, the story would have been told much more effectively.

      • ben

I played it in Japanese, the writing is not so bad in Japanese.

  • LordYukYuk

These are only on disc sales, did the Wii U version even get a physical release in Japan? Child of Light is currently #2 on the eShop charts in North America behind NES Remix 2.

    • ben

      no it didnt.

  • ben

The ps4 is actually selling even worse this week. Next week the ps4 could be around the 4 000 mark. It is in a terrible state.

    • matthew garcia

Actually the ps4 is dominating the rest of the world compared to the other consoles. Ps4 is doing so good that if it never released at all in Japan it would still be doing good

      • ben

For how long, without Japanese support? What is the big game exclusive that will get people buying the PS4 this summer? The last of Us? Please that is pathetic, do you really believe that inspires consumer confidence in the product?

        • oontz

Japanese support? Like it was said above, even if the ps4 didn’t sell in japan it’s still crushing sales in every other region. Give credit where credit is due.

          • ben

No Jrpg games. No Japanese support.
The vast majority of games that a lot of hardcore gamers are interested in are from Japan.
But Hey casuals love PSnore and Xbore. Proof you say? What is the best selling game on both platforms?

          • oontz

            “casuals love PSnore and Xbore”

The level of immaturity is high with this one. Enjoy your one closed eco-system gaming generation and I’ll enjoy mine.

      • oontz

        Ha ha, good point.

  • Rinslowe

Wow the Japanese really are mad for their handhelds huh!
    Good on em!

Wii U saw a pretty nice little boost there of roughly 3k right? Little positive right there.
PS4 is plateauing out a bit but still respectable considering.
Ans interesting to see Famicom Remix 1 + 2 on the charts. That’s neat.

It’s funny looking at the 3DS sales. It really is a beast.

  • TalesOfBS

The unfortunate side of that is that it’s for the PlayStation 3 and
PlayStation 4 versions of the game. Child of Light on the Wii U did not
crack the top 20 list at all.

Wii U is digital only. The PS3 and PS4 versions are getting mostly advertised by Ubisoft was the “main games” and they are ALSO the only ones with a physical deluxe edition.

  • Carlos Webster
