Mario Kart Grumble Volcano Wii vs. Wii U comparison [VIDEO]

With Mario Kart 8 just around the corner, several YouTube personalities who have gotten their hands on the game early have been taking a look at the tracks we’re familiar with and comparing them to the new high-definition version found in Mario Kart 8. As confirmed by Eurogamer yesterday, Mario Kart 8 does run at 1080p/60fps even while in split-screen two player mode, so it’s interesting to see these tracks compared side-by-side.

Grumble Volcano is one of the harder Mario Kart tracks with multiple pathways and obstacles that can mess you up even without other karters laying down banana traps. The video above takes a look at the Wii vs. Wii U version of the track, where you can note the differences between the textures, as well as the improved skybox for the track. Princess Peach is the character being played and you can see notable differences there as well, such as move movement of her hair and dress when jumping.

Be sure to turn the video quality up to 1080p and have a look, because it’s definitely worth it.

    Looks a lot better!

  • darkcreap

It looks better indeed, but the real differences you cannot see with those circuits from the last generation. The great differences come with the circuits from Mario Karts far away. The Donut Plains from SNES is a real change.

    • greengecko007

Wario’s Stadium from M64 looks amazing in MK8. I used to think that track was long and boring, but they have brilliantly redesigned it so that it looks really interesting. For the most part, they’ve done an excellent job upgrading the retro tracks.

      • darkcreap

Um, didn’t watch that. I have seen some, but I try to avoid seeing too many videos. Just enough to hype, but not too many that it will spoil everything in the game.

Yes Wario Stadium in MK64 was kind of long and not very difficult. Wide track, not very complicated curves, not a lot of points of failure… yep.

        • greengecko007

Well, I won’t spoil anything for you beyond telling you that they have really made it a lot more of an exciting track, rather than just an HD clone.

  • Moyack

MK8 looks so good I wanna eat it .。;・+ヾ(♥◕ฺ∀◕ฺ)ノ゚:。・+

    • matthew garcia

I wanna throw it up now lol

    • Officer Raichu

cant wait to eat it too
      (heard it taste like chicken)

      • nin-10-doughfan

        with mushrooms!

        • Gabe Hoffman

          and Stars

  • matthew garcia

Please stop with Mario kart already. Does anybody have any information on another Nintendo game that isn’t Mario. There’s gotta be some new info out there about another game.

    • DoctorWily

You’re not going to get any info about new games until E3. Why would they blow their wad beforehand and ruin the suspense? Not going to happen.

      • matthew garcia

I’m not saying fully reveal any game but if they can bring up soundtracks, characters and screen shot of this one game why can’t they do the same for another. Nintendo sounds desperate with Mario kart

        • Rinslowe

I think it just comes across that way because it’s the first title on Wii U they’ve really promoted globally and with any coherence. At least for Wii U so far…
All first party games should get this kind of treatment from Nintendo IMO, regardless of where the title ranks in popularity/ hype etc…

          • matthew garcia

The thing is there promoting it wrong. All there promoting is done through the internet but the average gamer doesn’t read Wii u daily or Nintendo life even ign. Fanboys go to those sites and when u think about it fanboys are always the minority. Nintendo needs television to reach the average gamer which strongly outnumbers the fanboy. They need cool commercials but for some reason Nintendo avoids that

          • Rinslowe

I don’t strictly disagree. They certainly could do with advertising in the more conventional sense…

          • matthew garcia

Yeah there way of promoting is only hitting a small number of people

          • Rinslowe

Yep. It’s interesting their style. Will it pay off?
I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

          • thedeciderU

it hasn’t yet. hopefully they expand their efforts tomorrow.

          • Zuxs13

Whoa you should start your own marketing company, you know so much about it. No body looks for news on this new fangled internet thingy, I mean my 8 year old nephew has no idea how to use an I pad or computer or watch YouTube videos or do that fancy Facebook thingy.
I don’t get why a company would use all these FREE things to market their games to their Audiences that directly want to see them. Such a waste, they should put it on Prime time TV at $500,000 a whack and hope that someone who cares might see it.

          • matthew garcia

Your way of thinking of Nintendo can do no wrong is the reason why Wii u got passed up by ps4 in 5 months. U do want Nintendo to be successful don’t u?

          • Zuxs13

I never said they can’t do no wrong.

You are making assumptions that they are only promoting it on line online and that its “wrong”. Yet here we are seeing another article about the game and hundreds are commenting on it, and do on every article that comes out on it. They are doing something right,.

          • matthew garcia

No the majority of people replying are the ones who already own a Wii u. That’s not targeting new buyers. Tv commercials target new buyers and Wii u needs a bigger install base

          • Zuxs13

Oh, you have a program that tracks on the comments on every site that has covered the game, and it tells you what each of those people own in their own home? Wow amazing….

          • matthew garcia

I’m talking about the comments on this post fool read some of them

          • Zuxs13

Oh right i forgot, Wii U daily is an appropriate sample size of the other 7.2 billion people on the planet.

          • matthew garcia

Out of the 7.2 billion people only 6 million own a Wii u which is sad. I’m just a ant in this whole equation but I’m gonna speak my mind and if that upsets then u clearly must not have much else goin on. Video games is not even my main hobby it’s playing guitar which I been doing for 10 years. Y’all need to quit being so butt hurt about other people’s opinions. Just move on

          • Zuxs13

And only 7 million own a PS4 so what.

And you were the one speaking you mind and complaining about a simple article. All i said is its rather pointless to come in here an rant, unless you are just trying to get people to rant back at you or it somehow makes you sleep at night.

          • matthew garcia

Yeah 7 million that passed Wii u in 5 months. U commented on my post what do u expect me to do not reply back.

          • Officer Raichu

            i dont have a wii u :P
getting the mk8 bundle after i see e3 first

          • ScrewAttack

His point is gamers do actually go on the internet. I’ve seen ads for Nintendo games on Youtube and Facebook, so that’s a reasonable start. TV’s old news. Current owners are indeed the minority on the net.

        • WiiUPS4

If this help sell Wii U so be it and heck Mariocart is awesome man but i do agree i wish nintendo would step up their game

          • matthew garcia

I don’t think this is gonna help sell Wii u’s. Tv commercials of Mario kart will though

          • WiiUPS4

Ive seen only one so far for Mariocart

          • matthew garcia

I havnt seen any. They have the money to show them more frequently but I’m not sure what there thinking

          • WiiUPS4

At this point who knows but i was happy to see 64 doing that last video with reggie as a robot

      • Ultrasyd

Somehow they ruin the suspense of Mario Kart ;) We’ll play it on May 30th, but not much surprise on this day when you put the disc in the console

        • DoctorWily

To me the surprise is overrated. It’s a Mario Kart game and I k now what I’m going to get with a Mario Kart game. There’s no suspense after I unlock every character and track and beat every cup with every racer either. But I keep racing because the game is awesome. It’s the gameplay, not the suspense, that keeps me coming back.

          • Volshebink

They are adding a pretty sweet online setup though. I think that’s the part that is suspenseful, if anything. Because we don’t really know what to fully expect or how it’s truly going to work once millions of players are released into it. Everything about this game has me excited. The Wii U needed this for sure. Even if it is just a single game that is getting hyped, it’s still a single game that has some really sweet online play for once.

    • Ultrasyd

Haha i understand you. Nowadays, you see everything of a game before it’s even released. Kind of kills the surprise. But well, nothing much else at the moment …

      • matthew garcia

        Sadly I didn’t think so

        • linkzero65

    • jjbredesen

Not until E3, they are keeping stuff a secret until then, so just MK news: P

      • matthew garcia

If they had more games in production they would have more to talk about but they only have a few that are almost ready for release. I never seen any company ride on one game so much

        • DoctorWily

Really? So you’ve never heard of Call of Duty? Or Metal Gear, Assassin’s Creed, Halo, Titanfall, Infamous or…. the list could go on and on. All the big titles over-saturate the media whenever there’s news about them.

          • Rinslowe

Yeah, this is a wide spread phenomenon…

          • matthew garcia

I didn’t know the soundtrack of those games before release. I didn’t know all the levels neither lol

        • Zuxs13

Every major game does this, not sure what bubble you are living in.

          • matthew garcia

Like I said what games have ever revealed the full features of the game before release. What bubble do u live in. The other games u talk about have been heavily advertised through commercials not this crap

          • Zuxs13

Again every major game does this. They release game play videos, behind the sense videos, articles and interviews all kinds of similar things.

Oh that’s right commercials where things blow up and show quick clips of things flashing on the screen then in the end actual tell you nothing about the game or show any real game play footage. I love those they sell so well to Zombies.

          • matthew garcia

The average gamer that doesn’t go to game sites watch those commercials. Those greatness awaits commercials sure did help PlayStation. Like I said Wii u needs sells do u not see that. I don’t care if I don’t care about commercials. Nintendo needs them. I had to tell my friends Wii u was not a add on to the original Wii cuz there not hardcore gamers. Those people need commercials

          • Zuxs13

Right Nintendo should follow the heard and make Zombie commercials that appeal to the “masses”

What is an “average” gamer. Are they like a “casual’ gamer or a non “hard-core” gamer? If gamers didn’t go to gaming web sites then they wouldn’t exist. If advertising on YouTube and Facebook didn’t work, then thousands of companies wouldn’t do it.
Yes TV is still the “second best” form of advertising (radio is possibly the first) but it is very costly. You have to direct your marketing towards your audience. Go watch cartoon network during the day, I see dozens of Nintendo commercials on there all the time.

          • matthew garcia

Lol dude I don’t watch cartoon network. I’ll watch guitar sessions live on HBO though. Look u say Nintendo directs there marketing to there audience which is cool but what u fail to realize is that audience got a lot smaller this gen. Obviously they need to try somethin different

          • Zuxs13

Well of course you don’t see Nintendo commercials then, there’s no advertisements on HBO!

The population didn’t get smaller. Kids are still there, they always will be, their attention for games is greatly divided amongst free instantly downloadable games and ones that cost 30-$60 that takes months or years to come out.

Heck maybe Nintendo needs to throw a boat load of cash down the toilet and advertise during the NHL playoffs or American Idol. It could pay off for them, im sure they feel it won’t, that’s why they have marketing people and study groups they pay to test that stuff.

          • matthew garcia

Look u can say all u want but there is no excuse for Wii U’s poor performance. There way of thinking is not working this time. I’m not really sure how u can defend that. Gamecubes numbers at this point in time was even better.I’m glad I have a ps4 pc and Wii u. When one system is trouble I just go to the other. Trust me when x and Zelda come out I will be all over my Wii u

          • Zuxs13

Im not defending their sales numbers. Nor am i crying about them either. I have my Wii U, and I play games on it (when i have free time between homework assignments), I have over 30 games on it now and I enjoy it, Its a great system.

Nintendo talking about a game a lot, or not marketing doesn’t cause me not to sleep at night, their console selling only 6 mil consoles now instead of 14 doesn’t hurt me. Nintendo not having a Unified account system where my games can be “backed” up in a cloud, on the other hand does bug me.

The reality is all the major consoles are doing bad, even the PS4 is not selling like it did the first 3 months, likely due to the lack of games as well. Sure Nintendo has made plenty of missteps with the Wii U, but i am still getting games for it, they are still making more games for it.

Unless you are a Nintendo Stock investor what does the console not selling as well, or them not blowing money away on TV commercials have to do with you?

I get them only releasing one “major” game so far this year being or not having a proper account system. but who cares what they do for marketing?

          • matthew garcia

Uh ps4 is doing great. It’s still ahead of Mario kart on Amazon. Not sure what your talking about. It Sold 370,000 last month in America alone. Wii u only sold 70,000. That’s not even half of the competition. I don’t need to write a short novel like u did to explain that lol

          • Officer Raichu

            actually mk8 is number 2 in uk(somehow)
            number 1 in japan
number 2 in germany and france
            and number 6 in us
            its doing pretty decent
            on amazon

          • matthew garcia

I agree it’s doing ok but c’mon a newly released game that’s 60 bucks is still losing on Amazon to a console that’s 399.00 that’s been out since November. Ps4 is doing pretty good

          • Zuxs13

It hasn’t been released yet and the PS4 is released. Not to mention Amazon and Nintendo never do well.

          • matthew garcia

I’m talking about pre orders of the game. But true Nintendo and Amazon don’t mix to well. Most Nintendo fans buy physical copies on launch day and throughout the consoles life

          • Officer Raichu

            guess what i found

mk8 bundle and the plain game number 2 and 4 on gamestops best sellers

            http://www.gamestop.com/

          • Officer Raichu

well mk bundle now 4 and mk dissapeared that stinks
            but kirby moved up :D
EDIT dang mk and the bundle keep switching out for 4th

          • matthew garcia

Who knows what will happen lol

          • Officer Raichu

yeah gamestop if you keep clicking it changes every time XD
but mk or the bundle always keep in top 4 no matter what

          • Officer Raichu

well its actually doing a lot better at gamestop i heard

          • matthew garcia

I heard that to. I’m not pre ordering I’m just gonna go to the store and buy it I’m sure They will have some

          • Officer Raichu

actually i also saw this really nice sized banner on the website
(heck even watch dogs all it has is a tiny box)

          • matthew garcia

I believe Mario kart will sale well but console sales are still low prior to release
The game needs to move consoles

          • Zuxs13

And it only sold 12k in Japan only 2 months after its release there? Its not doing as well as everyone hoped, Its doing better then the Wii U yeah.

Xbox One is struggling no doubt about that.

          • matthew garcia

Well consoles in general are doing bad in Japan. Wii u seems to be consistently in the 5 to 8000 range every week. Americans and Europeans play consoles the most. Wii u is losing badly there. U know Japan is more handheld when even vita is doing good there. Cell phone games are even a obsession there

          • matthew garcia

An average gamer are the millions of people who got a Wii but lost interest in the Wii u. The only people with a Wii u now are mainly die hard Nintendo fans

      • AlienFanatic

Nintendo is set to announce its fiscal results tomorrow. There may be information disseminated as part of Iwata’s forecast for the fiscal year through 2015.

An awful, awful lot is riding on Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros., though. While I’d like to play MK8, I’m not going to touch the Wii-U again until I’m 100% certain that there will be a lot of good games released for it in the near future. One major first party game for (at LEAST) the next six months isn’t enough of a reason to drop $300 on a Wii-U, no matter how many independent titles and VC rehashes it has.

I really, really don’t see the Wii-U surviving long term. Nintendo simply doesn’t have the resources, first OR second party, to release enough titles to make the system competitive with the Sony and Microsoft machines. Yes, Nintendo’s games are typically awesome but that also means very long production lead times.

So far, imo, the Wii-U has largely sold based on nostalgia for Nintendo’s franchises. If Iwata and Nintendo can’t give a credible timeline for the release of key and innovative first-party titles, the Wii-U is quite likely to be second only to the Virtual Boy in the list of worst-selling Nintendo systems.

        • SolarShane13

Another main issue is the name and the way Nintendo presents it to the public, aka the consumer.

The reason Wii U is bombing is because that consumers think the Wii U is just another accessory to the Wii. Nintendo is largely to blame. I seriously hope the Nintendo of old comes back and does some proper advertising.

I don’t care for some CGI crap. Look at the Japanese Pikmin 3 ads. Perfect combination of CGI and GamePlay. Oh, the Japanese ad also has an actual ADULT. Nintendo needs to drop the kids, or else they’re going to dig a deeper hole into the “kiddie” category. As much as I hate to admit it, this is the reality. (FYI: I’m 23, I just like the number 13; if anyone is wondering about my name)

If Nintendo marketed the Wii U under a different name and audience, then it would have done a WHOLE LOT BETTER. (Mainly because what adult would buy a console that was mainly marketed towards kids and young teens?)

    • greengecko007

Not to be rude, but if you don’t like the content, don’t read it. I’m all for expressing your opinion about the game, and I understand some people are tired of the MK8 coverage, but nobody is forcing you to click on these articles.

I personally cannot get enough of this game.

      • matthew garcia

I can click on them to voice my opinion. I didn’t spend 350 on a Wii u for this. I like Nintendo for other reasons besides Mario. I can speak freely

        • Zuxs13

So what have you accomplished? There will still be dozens more articles on Mario Kart for months to come. Will you sleep better tonight now?

          • matthew garcia

I havnt accomplished anything but that’s ok cuz Nintendo hasn’t neither this gen. My way of thinking I’m sure would help Wii u be more successful and I’m definitely not alone in the way I think. U can continue to think shallow if that helps u sleep better

          • Zuxs13

I am not thinking they are perfect, im just pointing out that its rather ignorant to rant about “another mario kart article” if you don’t want to hear about it. Just don’t read it.

          • matthew garcia

But I like Nintendo and I’m not alone ranting have u not read other people’s comments. The more people talk the more likely change will happen. I don’t expect things to happen overnight

          • Zuxs13

This isn’t even a Nintendo Video. Its from GameExplain, they made the video up. Wii U daily barely reports on a 10th of Daily Nintendo news this just happens to be one that Ashley liked. So nothing you say here will change Nintendo.

          • matthew garcia

So are u saying that your happy nothing will change Nintendo or do u want change

          • Zuxs13

Complaining about a video that someone made to compare the old and new versions of a game just because you feel like complaining wont change anything. Its just your personal need to bitch, nothing more.

Certain things need to change for Nintendo yes, but them marketing Mario kart or talking about it, shouldn’t

          • matthew garcia

Like I said I’m not complaining about just this video I’m complaining about the last 3 months of nothing but this

          • Zuxs13

Stop reading Wii U daily then, they don’t cover much of anything. And have you forgotten all the SSB news that was out before the Mario Kart news? Or all the news on Mario Golf World tour, all the Indie news? Oh you don’t get most of that here.

          • matthew garcia

Yeah I found out it won’t be out til summer which sucks balls. Look I can talk all I want all u have to do is not reply and I won’t be bothering u know more. It’s that simple. Were allowed to post on Wii u daily for a reason and that’s not for everything to be positive.

        • greengecko007

Again, I’ve no problem with you voicing your opinion, but that’s not really what you’re doing. You’re just complaining about the abundance of Mario Kart news, which isn’t going to make it go away at all. It just seems like you’re wasting your time.

          • matthew garcia

It’s not a waste of time it’s called a discussion. If that’s the case why are u wasting your time replying to me

          • greengecko007

It’s not a disscussion, it’s complaining. You asking the writers to stop making Mario Kart 8 articles isn’t going to do anything. You say that you want information on different games, well there’s 5 articles right below this one on that very topic.

          • matthew garcia

Sounds like your having a discussion with me right now. That was the point of me complaining to create discussion.

    • Capt. Smoker

Nope lol Wii U is nothing but one drought after another, anime on the browser and Indies are about its only use

    • C4

      E3 is nigh ;)

There will be lots of news about other games and hopefully some positive surprises.

    • sd

I am really looking forward to Mario Kart, its the only reason I still own a Wii U. But having said that its very concerning that Nintendo are hyping 2 games so much and not even talking about other games. they have also announced a small E3, no presentation (I think). It is backing up my theory that they will drip feed the few games being made and that they have quietly given up on teh Wii U.

With that in mind if they have given up on the Wii U already I doubt a new console will be out until 2015 but most likely 2016 (2017 the latest). That gives them so much time to fix the mistakes and release a new console with a heap of games. Lets face it core gamers would forgive Nintendo if they launched a new console with a heap of games. The Wii U would then become home to indie developers and small indie games.

    • lukas

no we want mario kart than they will talk about smash bros so on and so forth

  • Rinslowe

Ohhh thank god I had pretty much seen this already. Or I’d be forced to watch it now and forego abstinence from Mario Kart 8 before release. Phew!
    :P

  • Ultrasyd

Can’t see this video right now, i’m watching the direct once again XD Looks like the news are 300% Mario Kart. E3 please, we need new blood

    • Ultrasyd

btw, i love how you can watch a video on TV and browse internet at the same time on the gamepad

  • BIG Franky

wow… that seriously looks absolutely gorgeous….

  • Alexizzle

Seriously? Another article about Mario Kart? Just stop. For crying out loud……..

    • matthew garcia

I think Nintendo should make a simple tv commercial that says the Wii u is not a add on to the original Wii and then the commercial just stops and continues with the show

      • great deku tree

right, I mean even my cousins in England didn’t know whether or not the wii u was a new console or just another controller for the wii

  • Derek

Everything is going to be spoiled by the time I play the game

    • linkzero65

If you think about it. it’s a Mario Kart game. it doesn’t have anything that can really spoil you. lol now please have some of this fabulous man!

        • matthew garcia

I agree that’s what I been waiting for also

        • Zuxs13

Oh god no, this looks so boring. He did a good job for one guy but for a zelda game, no thank you,

          • WiiUPS4

            I disagree

          • Zuxs13

What is so “special” about this? How would this make the game play better? It’s not even that good of a job, its all prerender stuff too.

          • WiiUPS4

Each to their own i quess

      • WiiUPS4

        • linkzero65

          Thx

    • darkcreap

Sorry to bother you, but they said that the artstyle will probably be more in line with Zelda Skyward. They feel they touch the right point between darkness, realism, cartoonism and light humor. Not too Windwaker, not too Twilight Princess.

EDIT: But yes, the Video looks great, I agree.

      • Zuxs13

I don’t remember reading that. I only remembering them say they could go many different ways with it.

        • darkcreap

Yep, that thing you say Aonuma said. He said something like they were trying to defy conventions, like Zelda being a princess. But they also said, much before, that they believed that with Skyward they had hit a sweet spot. Thing is that I cannot find my source, so my memory could well be cheating on me…

          • http://twitter.com/beyondgoob Austin Lopez

I remember reading something like that as well, so you’re not alone :3

      • matthew garcia

I read that to on Nintendo life

    • Zuxs13

in his video everything is filled with straight lines and sharp edges, there’s no “life” to anything in this environment.
At least Nintendo tech demo had some character to the environment.

      • WiiUPS4

True but i say add both ideas..

      • great deku tree

I’m gutted that this isn’t going to be the art style for Zelda u. :( great graphics and doesn’t go ultra realistic. (don’t think I’d like ultra realistic as much tbh…)

    • C4

Not getting Zelda vibes from this tbh. Too shiny…

Speaking of which, the MK track doesn’t feel very Mario-ish to me either…?

    • Rinslowe

It just goes to show. That the soul of the game is not in it’s visuals exactly. As this is pretty, but I had a hard time getting excited over it.
Art style really is the key aspect in bringing Zelda to life…
I prefer the 2011 Zelda demo to this tbh.

“Look how many pages are in the mario Kart 8 manual!”
I will know everything, EVERYTHING, about this game. I will know what the producers had for breakfast this morning. Still won’t stop me buying the game!

    • Zuxs13

The one thing you won’t know, is how it will end….

      • matthew garcia

It will end with a 1st 2nd or 3rd place trophy lol

      • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

The song ends, but the story never ends…
Cause Mario Kart 9 will come to the 3DS successor, or else the Wii V. (i call any Wii U successor Wii V, tentative title.)

    • Alexizzle

You forgot “The backcover of Mario Kart 8 box revealed!” and “Look at the game credits for Mario Kart 8 here!” lol

  • Joel

This track looks the most faithful out of most of them.

  • wiimenonowiiu

    Wow just wow

  • Enumerating Wishes

Definitely bet they’re using normal maps on the ground texture. In any case it looks good!
