The Miiverse: Wii Want U [VIDEO]

With the Wii U having two major releases on the horizon, many people are now on the fence about buying a Wii U. While these games are attractive in themselves, there is one aspect about being a Wii U owner that I feel is often overlooked. In the following video, I discuss how the Miiverse community helps create a quality online experience.

How do you feel the Miiverse community stacks up against gaming communities on other platforms? What sort of community driven video content would you like to see for Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U?

  • marvin atwell

    Yeah

  • jjbredesen

Yup, i think Miiverse is a fantastic app, and i use it more than twitter, lets you share your best moments, make a funny post or have good debates etc. And you get to follow devs and stay updated.

Needs some improvements, and the new 3min per comment thing is really annoying, and would also like to be able to have a higher limit than 200.

Overall a solid experience, and great video John as always :)

My profile if anyone is interested: https://miiverse.nintendo.net/users/jjbredesen

    • Deadpool U

Yeah but that kind of ends when you get to the Smash community it’s either stupid posts or stupid character suggestions and I don’t even want to mention Bigley.

      https://miiverse.nintendo.net/users/DeMax0

      • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

On smash community you are right, to many stupid comments/questions so much even I stopped going there very fast.

        • Deadpool U

Yeah especially since alot of people use the Smash community to make off topic posts most of the time.

          • Mario

Hopefully, it will stop once SSB4 for the 3ds is released.

          • Deadpool U

That’s what I oeep telling myself but most will just move to the youtube community.

          • Mario

            And that’s a problem because… -_-

          • Deadpool U

Nothing but even the youtube community doesn’t deserve the madness to be unleashed upon them.

          • Mario

Aren’t you the one who usually does that Deadpool? -_-

          • Deadpool U

            Yeah but still.

          • Michael Legault

Hey, when the game comes out we can just thrash the shit out of these punks till they rage quit, keep a name list and cross them out as you go, sounds like a great way to kill an evening to me ^_^

      • jjbredesen

Yup, i often laugh when i enter it xD

      • Sdudyoy

I hate the Smash bros community, do people really think repetitively suggesting the same character will put that character, and I really hate it when they suggest characters that have nothing to do with Nintendo.

        • Mario

The only requests that I think make sense are that of Shulk, Chrom, Palutena, Layton and even Pac-Man. The rest are, to me, just dumb.

          • Sdudyoy

Yeah, I can see why suggesting characters every now and then is fun, but I find alot of people suggesting the same character every day on Sakurai’s pic of the days.

          • Mario

Yeah. I know. But you won’t really see me doing that everyday.

          • Sdudyoy

I know, I didn’t say you did, I’m saying there are people.

          • Mario

            I know.

        • Deadpool U
          • Mario

            Is what?

          • Deadpool U

            Don’t you see the picture?

          • Mario

Yes? So? I don’t see what that has anything to do with what you dislike about the Smash bros community. -_-

          • Deadpool U

It’s called Bigley it’s a meme in the Smash community.

          • Mario

            Mmhhh… Still don’t see it. -_-

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

to bad, he don’t get it…

        • http://gentlerobot.com/ Gentle Robot

They put up the community a year before the game’s release date. What else was going to happen?

      • ShortyStock

I hope the Smash community isnt still like this when the game comes out.

        • palomino blue

I don’t think it will stay that way. I know I’m not even following that community until the game is released. I assume there are others doing the same and it will be a lot more enjoyable when we can start sharing actual game experiences.

          • ShortyStock

They should create a community called, I don’t know, but just a general community that doesn’t have to do with any game, where people can just go when they want to post nonsense and such.

      • Brandon

I hate the smash community so much that this kid ryan follow me so much he is a magnet of trouble!

    • darkcreap

“Needs some improvements, and the new 3min per comment thing is really annoying, and would also like to be able to have a higher limit than 200.”

Agreed, the 3 min limit for replies to other user’s posts are ridiculous, especially with the 200 character limits. Some times you need to recommend a game and you need to post several messages. And that does not mean you want to spam them.

    • GABRIEL GARCIA

Yes Mii verse is a great community very friendly is like a perfect world!!!!

      • Mario

        No world is perfect man.

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I should use Mii-verse more myself, I’m not very active there but the community is very fun. As John mentioned I too have great experience in MH3U and the community, I got so much help and friendly replies whn I asked something, even when I asked some obvious things, people really where there for me and helped me a lot in beating MH3U solo mode and lot’s of fun in online sessions.

    • mojack411

I had MH3U for a whole year before I ever touched the online play just a month ago. I stuck solely to solo hunting and playing with my friends that had 3DS versions precisely for the very reason because I felt like MH would have an elitist online community that I wouldn’t want to deal with. Because of that, I advanced extremely slowly. One day I said, “Screw it. I paid for this game, might as well see everything it has to offer” and hopped online. I’m merely HR7 and I was in a party with HR’s50-100. I immediately braced myself for trolling. Instead, what I found was a bunch of really cool guys (gals? Couldn’t tell from the voice of one of them) who wanted to help me all along the way. They didn’t berate my mistakes, they didn’t become toxic or anything like that. It was just pure fun. If anything we just jokingly laughed at each others’ mistakes if anything. Like John I was absolutely floored, and the comforting community continued on. Every hunting party I’ve been on has been a fun and pleasant experience. Coming from games like League of Legends and online CoD, this was such a welcome breath of fresh air.

      • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

My online experience has also been all but stellar in general online gaming, only in wow we had a generally nice community/server and awesome guild but in most other cases it was bad and so I too feared getting laughed at being “only HR5″ so played mostly with my brother online the two of us until one day my brother couldn’t play and some guy at miiverse invitted me for a fun session.

As I joined knowing only him from mii-verse and te others so called “pugs” indeed I can verify the four of us had so much fun, even if we failed because of my “noob gear” we had a blast for sure, I really hope other communities will be as fun as this, pointing at Mario Kart, Smash Brothers and likely X which seems to be drop in drop out in the likely online mode. Other games/communities can learn a thing or two from MH indeed.

  • DragonSilths

Fuck the Miiverse, bunch of crap that gets you banned and banned and banned. Watch, people will get banned for posting those Miiverse Stamps you get for SPOILERS. I advise people to stay the hell away from Miiverse.

    • Mr Ninty

maybe the cod community on ps/xbox is more to your liking

    • Sdudyoy

I’ve never been banned, infact I don’t know anyone who has been banned.

      • Deadpool U

I’ve been banned but I’ve definitely deserved it.

        • Sdudyoy

While now I know someone who has been banned, aw well.

        • http://YouTube.com/ApacheFrei Kevin Frei

Hahahaha nice what did you do xD

    • Mario

Since when are putting stamps spoilers?

      • DragonSilths

It’s not, The admins are dubasses. They will say you unlocked a stamp but posting it is a spoiler. On the miiverse I did my own fictional story called “The Adventures Of Nin-Dragon” It had nothing to do with Nintendo or yet the admins hit my story with Spoilers of a game or strategic information then I got banned for 2 weeks over it. Miiverse is broken, its shit, denying that makes you delusional.

        • Mario

Au contaire. I’m very aware that Miiverse has some issues of his own. But that hasn’t stop me from using the service nevertheless.

        • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Your attitude, foul language, name calling, and general hostility sure does not help your case.

          • DragonSilths

If you had been treated poorly from Nintendo the past year you wouldn’t be a happy camper either. I have had over 75 impersonators on Miiverse, I was quite well known, I am known for being outspoken and I will speak my mind whether its something you want to hear or not. I have had people from the UK, USA, Sweden and even a few fellow Canadians impersonate me on Miiverse, false report my ass claim I AM THE FAKE ONE, I GET BANNED, then they post gloating about getting me banned. I had talked with someone higher up at Nintendo about it, was supposed to get a call from the admins themselves they never called, had another supervisor threaten to ban me again if I called Nintendo again to complain about Miiverse. Its just pathetic how far Nintendo has fallen.

    • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Wow.. Comes here to complain about being banned on MiiVerse.. With an attitude like that and language like that no wonder you got banned. The problem is you dude!

  • Nostalgic_Chaos

What they’re doing with Mario Kart TV is brilliant. If Nintendo can start doing this type of feature with more games, then we’re definitely onto something. They need to add something like ‘Smash Brothers TV’ for the upcoming Smash on Wii U. The amount of things that they could do with that game are endless. Posting clips on Mii Verse of your best fights or K.O’s etc… Mii Verse is nice, but what they’ve done with Mario Kart TV takes things to another level.

    • Sdudyoy

As someone who has no way of recording video games, being able to upload MK8 videos to Youtube will be somthing I will do alot.

      • http://www.youtube.com/user/ChiGuyGaming John Zaccari

Yeah, as I stated in the video, I’d like to take advantage of those elements. One idea I had was having people upload their highlights and send them to me so I could compile them into a video to feature on the site.

        • Sdudyoy

That sounds interesting, if you decide to do that I will definitely send my highlights in, although I’m not the best Mario kart player.

          • Mario

Doesn’t matter man. As long as you have fun doing it. :-)

  • Sdudyoy

Great video John, I would agree with you, but I’ve never been apart of any online Community other than Miiverse, so to my knowledge I agree, but I’m not saying that first hand.

  • Arthur Jarret

Miiverse has been ripe to join ever since the european launch, when I joined miiverse.
Amazing jokes, european e-shop forecasts every monday (always accurate), great drawings back before monster hunter released.

I have granted miiverse humour, helpful tips, latest news and updates, sheer awesomeness and have remained ever humble about it.

  • Mario

You don’t need to describe me Miiverse any further Zorpix. Miiverse has been a great service that I had been using to share my special moments in games and seeing that of others. :)

    • jjbredesen

John Zaccari is not Zorpix lol..:P

      • Mario

        Oops! My bad!

    • http://www.youtube.com/user/ChiGuyGaming John Zaccari

I hear ya, but this video is more intended for people who don’t own a Wii U, and are currently thinking about buying one.

      • Mario

        I know. :)

  • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

I’ve yet to see this, but I find Steam to have a versatile and enjoyable community. Not sure how it stacks up to Miiverse, and vice versa, but I can tell I’ll enjoy it.

    • jjbredesen

I recommend it, but it is very different from steam, its more like a Nintendo twitter, with drawing and where everyone can interact with everyone etc,

      • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

        I can imagine.

  • JBeauregard

Miiverse is great, but Nintendo needs to make many changes. Some of the rules are ridiculous and loosely interpretated, and there needs to be consistency. Another problem is this newly instituted 3 minute delay between posting comments. The delay was added to Miiverse without any sort of explanation. In fact, Tom’s post was shut down from making comments because of the backlash. It’s just really hard to have good gaming conversations now. I stay out of trouble on Miiverse because, well, I’m an adult. So, the Miiverse rules aren’t my BIG issue. I would be happy as hell if they just peeled back that delay, though!

  • Javy G

Very unsettling…but I like it! And those who are on the fence for a Wii U: SSB, MK8 with a free game (I will be getting Pikmin 3), Zelda U, and X are on top of the future-to-buy list.

  • paulthevgking

x should have online chat when on multiplayer

  • steveb944

Miiverse is pretty decent thus far for me. Wish it were a bit speedier but otherwise it’s been okay.

  • Rowan Roy

    I like ign but http://bit.ly/QQpzma

  • shanafan

I love Miiverse. I check it daily. I love to post my accomplishments, as well as give a “Yeah” to others’ accomplishments.

  • greengecko007

Miiverse is a fun community network app, but I feel it’s biggest weakness is consistancy with moderation. I’ve never run into any problems, but many people have. I’ve said before that at this point it would be far better to have separate communities for adults, or even just an age filter. I get that Nintendo wants to play the role of den mother and protect children, and that’s admirable, but it shouldn’t interfere with how I’m able to interact with my friends.

In terms of offering online gaming experiences though, Nintendo still has a lot to prove…

  • condor87z

My only problem with the Miiverse is the fact that there is no translation feature. I often see messages in spanish but alas I cannot read them.

    • Mario

Entonces tendras que ir a classes de español.

      • condor87z

Yeah I know a little from college, but I’m not taking classes just for miiverse.

        • Mario

          Buen punto.

  • Brandon

When Im at my dads house, I barely even touch the wii u, but when I do I go to miiverse first. The wii u is not as bad as some people say, yeah it still has its flaws, but no gaming platform is perfect. Nintendo can still improve the wii u, they just need to imprve online and at least try to get the publisheers that supported them from the begin(ubisoft, activision, WB games, and etc.)back on board. I will be buying a wii u this summer for myself. Im looking foward to bayonetta 2, I should at least try the first one on my xbox 360, but Im hoping nintendo ports it over.

  • Chase U

I completely agree and also noticed the friendliness on the Miiverse when I first got a Wii U back in January. My first “how do you do this” post on the DKC: Tropical Freeze community got replies and they were all very nice and explained exactly what I had to do to get to the next level. This is just one of many friendly encounters I’ve had on the Miiverse. Granted I’ve had a post or two taken down because of language and friend-request requests which you aren’t allowed to fully come out and ask for one apparently, but it’s all good because the Miiverse truly is a quality gaming social network because of the people that make up the Miiverse.

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Nintendo Network and MiiVerse is bringing me back into online gaming. Playing online with my XBOX360 was fun at first but the community and players were awful. Insults about your skill, your family, and sexual orientation. I hated it and it is solely responsible for turning me off of the first person shooter genre of games because those games have practically become online only if you want any sort of gameplay out of them and the players are generally a bunch of immature a-holes.

I am looking forward to some great fun with MK8 and Smash Bros and I hope that the online aspect is something Nintendo keeps expanding on because they seem to do it right!

    • Jackassassin

The majority of the Xbox/PlayStation communities are made up of immature ignoramuses, but we’re not ALL ass***es. Sorry to hear your Xbox experience was dealing with a bunch of manchildren. D:

  • Chris

Miiverse is great, but they MUST get rid of that stupid 3 minute wait to post.

  • Mithiragi

    Too late. I’m permabanned… :(

    • Jackassassin

      How??

      • Mithiragi

Bullying when I was just stating my opinion. One time I got reported when someone said Jigglypuff shouldn’t be in smash. I said she is likely to be in because she was part of the original 12. The OP called me an idiot. His post didn’t get removed. My comment got removed for saying that his argument was baseless and had nothing to do with the topic at hand…

        • Jackassassin

          That’s rough…

        • Cyntheta Luis

Sorry for that, but that is just how strict they are at controlling fights in Miiverse. At least a flame war won’t start for this.
And also, you know Jigglypuff will still be there, so there is just no point to argue. You can report his comment if you are so displeased by it, and in my opinion, you have the reason to.

          • Mithiragi

I did. It’s still there.. It sucks not being able to post on Miiverse. I wish there was a way to get out of permaban..

  • darkcreap

I don’t have a point of comparison, but I never felt I was being harassed online by anyone. Pretty much the opposite, people are nice and try to keep it that way. And people being able to paint things in the Art Academy for everyone else is just wonderful. Some times one can go into Miiverse just to see the novelties.

Miiverse is also full of people eager to recommend games. Yep, definitely it is a community full of good feeling.

  • GABRIEL GARCIA

Wow! I never thought I’ll say this to John zaccari, good job !! Thank you for making this video and l’ll like to see your mk8 video.

  • Cyrus Malachi

Miiverse is an awesome feature with a lot of potential. The way they are able to incorporate it in with games like zelda ww and zombieu is really cool. Of course the samething can be said about Nintendo TVii, which most people dont even know about, and was actually the selling point in me buying the Wii U. Its my new tv remote for every tv in my house, but of course, just like Miiverse could use some improvement. Like for example they should have mimiced the direct tv and/or dish network remotes. But with that being said i cant wait to see what they do with both in the future.

  • C4

They should do more games like the Animal Crossing plaza (of course in ideal case accompany it with a U game). So much potential.

  • Nintendude

The community of Miiverse as a whole is alright. But there are some communities that I wouldn’t even dare to go near, as they’re just filled with stupidity. (Looking at you Smash Bros Community)

    • great deku tree

tbh it’s to be expected. I mean, there’s no general discussion community and SSB4 hasn’t come out yet so people go there. I admit it’s a pretty rubbish community the now…but when SSB4 actually comes out all those spam and troll posts are going to disappear and it’ll be one hell of a good community. it’d be cool if SSB4 followed suite with MK8 regarding MKtvii. it’d be pretty cool to have highlights of KOs etc.

  • Rinslowe

Miiverse is one of the freshest things from Nintendo in recent years. It’s not perfect, but it is a great place to share thoughts and experiences on topic with other gamer’s.

  • Cyntheta Luis

Out of all the offered free games for Mario Kart 8, I have them all. QAQ I don’t know should I be proud or sad.
Fine! I’ll go back to Animal Crossing Plaza to cure my broken heart.

  • Magiphart

Now is the time to leave Miiverse with that comment restriction.

  • dannyosmonovich

It’s so true! If I am ever stuck on a game I will just ask the Miiverse community to help me out and I always get an answer! I like asking fellow gamers rather than just looking up the answer online.

  • Adrian Brown

I really like Miiverse, if I’m lost I prefer to post a question into it and wait a cuople of minutes for the answer, when I get an in-game achievement (like defeating a boss or getting a shiny Pokémon) I post it and people seem to be very cool with it. I also jump to the Art Academy community and check how creative and awesome people can be.

This is a kind of online gaming community that only Nintendo can create.

  • InterTreble

Miiverse is another invention by Nintendo that all the others will or are being copying. One of the many.

  • great deku tree

I’ve really liked miiverse for discussing games and ideas with many people. however due to that stupid 3 minute commenting update I practically never use it now…only reason I ever go on it now is to check the super smash bros pic of the day or else very rarely ask for help in a game. whenever I try any conversations I end up frustrated and just leave. X( hope they change that rule, unless they have already…haven’t been online for 2 weeks.
