Nintendo will not be losing money on Wii U anymore

According to senior analyst David Gibson, Nintendo will not be taking a loss on Wii U consoles sold anymore. This change happened after the quarterly financial briefing, in which Nintendo stated its outlook for the next year to be 3.6 million units sold. According to Gibson, this is more than Nintendo currently has in stock, so more Wii U units will need to be produced, meaning Nintendo will not be taking a loss on inventory sitting in warehouses waiting to be on retail shelves.

This is good news, but so far Nintendo’s forecasts have been very high. With this conservative forecast, Iwata seems to finally acknowledge that the Wii U needs more than one or two games from Nintendo every month in order to move the units of previous forecasts.

    Here We Go!!!

  • jjbredesen

Well thats great news, lets think there forecast is realistic, so big chance that this will be reality!

  • Mayoo

So because some dudes predicted Wii U will sell more, we immediately come to the conclusion that they won’t loose money.

One major thing was omitted: Nintendo can’t deliver. Unless they drastically change the way the company markets the console and also change the way they troll everyone with screenshots for too long before getting the actual game out, Nintendo just won’t be able to deliver … again. They need to realize that we are in 2014.

    • Stephen Macneil

It’s a completely realistic, and modest, forecast. With MK8, SSB, X, and Bayonetta 2 all coming out this year they will reach that goal at least.

      • FlashFan207

Yes, indeed. And I am one who would rather Nintendo make solid games and take their time with them, with cool screenshots all along the way, rather than rushing out subpar crap.

        • zlk

Nope. I don’t want Nintendo turning into an anualized company like EA or Activision. Can you image how stale Zelda and Mario Kart would be if we got one every single year?

          • DragonSilths

Activision isn’t actually that bad. Other then taking advantage of idiots with COD being yearly they really haven’t done anything bad. Also not putting Destiny on Wii U…but still they are no where near as bad as EA.

      • Alan Michael Hensley

Mario Kart 8 alone could move about 1 million Wii U’s
and I don’t mean right when the game comes out, I’m talking like over the period of 2 months, maybe 3

        • sharlo galmo

The way it looks right now, i think Mariokart gonna sell 1 million on 1 months. On the most store right now, it is the best pre-order game, Germany,Japan,Canada,UK,France etc etc…

          • AlienFanatic

The question is how many NEW systems will it sell? Will people drop $300 for a new Wii-U to play it when they haven’t bought the system for Mario, Pikmin, WindWaker, and Donkey Kong? Time will tell.

      • AlienFanatic

Bayonetta and X will not generate new system sales. They appeal to an extremely narrow demographic, and are largely unknown outside of hardcore gaming circles. MK8 and SSB will be the titles that may generate that movement, assuming Nintendo has no other titles scheduled for release this fiscal year.

        • Budd Black

I think you mean any significant sales. A few people will pick them up specifically for those games. When you factor in a catalogue including MK8 and SSB, people will be more likely to buy in based on a niche game.

        • Stephen Macneil

X and Bayonetta won’t generate system sales like MK8 and SSB will, but I’ve heard enough of the “hardcore” gamers say they’re either waiting for Bayonetta 2 or X before they pick up the system to believe it will give the Wii U a boost. Once they have the system, that’s when they start looking at other things Nintendo has to offer that they might not have bought the system for in the first place.

          • Rinslowe

I think both X and Bayonetta 2 should provide a spike in sales between the big sellers Kart and Smash. But not on the same level. Still what can be expected of those two titles than an initial modest bump?
All I know is both those secondary titles are day one for me. X being my most anticipated Nintendo game of 2014 at this point. Bayonetta is a close third after Kart…

          • Magnus Gonzalez

yeah, Smash, Kart and Mario sell consoles. The others help push people to take the plunge because they see that their will be games to play. That’s why I see Kart selling well. There are enough secondary 1st party games like Pikmin, DK and 3D World to incentivize a person on the fence. Once Kart, Smash, and Zelda are out, if you like Nintendo, I can’t understand why you wouldn’t buy a Wii U at that point. If you claim only Metroid or Star Fox will get you to buy…well, your name is Daniel and you have no intention of doing so and are trolling and we all see through your ruse. lol

          • Rinslowe

True, enough. And that’s pretty much sound logic as well. A person coming on board with Wii U “now” gets a pretty nice run compared to those of us who bought into the system early. Unlike us, they have a reasonably healthy library of first party games to get through after Kart and before Smash, Bayo 2 and X for eg… As you say…

      • DragonSilths

        Zelda, do not forget it.

    • M.C. Pauly GooGoo

I just Nintendo treated the Wii-U like they do the 3DS as far as consistent (and consistently good) game releases. How is it that 3DS gets two awesome 1st party titles in one month (Kirby and Mario Golf) while the Wii U hasn’t seen a 1st party flagship title since February?

    • M.C. Pauly GooGoo

I just wish Nintendo treated the Wii-U like they do the 3DS as far as consistent (and consistently good) game releases. How is it that 3DS gets two awesome 1st party titles in one month (Kirby and Mario Golf) while the Wii U hasn’t seen a 1st party flagship title since February?

      • Mayoo

Exactly my thoughts. Why can’t we have “A Link Between Worlds”. Would be perfect on a Wii U.

      • AlienFanatic

You have to realize, though, that producing a 3DS game doesn’t require the same number of developers as a Wii-U title. As a result, they can produce more content with smaller teams. Also, if you’re Nintendo would you put more development into a system with 45 million units in consumers’ hands or one with six?

        • M.C. Pauly GooGoo

but i want more gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaames :(

    • Nintenjoe82

No. He means that once they get to the next sales amount, they will have finished their old stock and be manufacturing more with all of the RnD costs absorbed into cost of producing the first batch. Future units will cost them less to make so the current price will be profitable per unit.

But you’re right. The company could still lose plenty of money with poor hardware and software sales. They might not even hit that 3.6M.

  • Daniel Gonzalez

That sounds more like a realistic goal. At least they’re learning that the Wii U isn’t going to sell like the Wii.

    • Magnus Gonzalez

yep. no idea where last year’s 9 million projection came from. There was zero indication it would sell like that and they knew they had no system sellers and 3rd party support. What a bad call.

      • ScrewAttack

Arrogance. Glad they’re apparently over it, though I’ll reserve judgement for E3.

Also…..Magnus did you change your name, or are you in fact a new Magnus? I’m confused, I’m not on here much any more.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

He’s basically a mock account of Magnus and myself. Either that, or a fan deep down. ;P

          • ScrewAttack

Ah righto. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery right? :D

I wish! All wrapped up in assessment season, have been since March with no end in sight til October (though a brief reprieve next month). Just long enough to enjoy MK8, and go out and buy a PS4 of course. Looks like you guys have this place well in hand :)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Well I can’t speak for Magnus, but I consider it an honor that someone went out of their way to make one. :P

Well that’s good. Hope you enjoy both MK8 and the PS4. I leave this place to the crazies. I find it more fun in the forums these days. Friendlier environment. Lol.

          • ScrewAttack

Thanks bud, I most definitely will. Maybe I’ll see you on the track someday when you finally buckle.
Lol no kidding, I found that when I transitioned initially. Couldn’t be arsed with keeping up to date with yet another forum though, Neogaf and tfw keep me busy enough, especially now I stop by 4chan too. Thankfully I don’t think the newspage trolls have the intelligence to break into the forum.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Haha. Yeah, I’ll get the game eventually. Christmas this year maybe. I won’t be able to do much cause I’m taking a few classes in a couple of weeks.

True. I suppose anything is better than being around whackjobs any day. That’s a good benefit of the forums, better moderating which means less trolling going on. It’s a shame this comment section has little to none. Things would be a lot smoother.

      • Assassinated23

Well they had sold ove 4 mil in a couple months, they had a whole year this time, and knew they had a 3D Mario game, Major DLC for their 2D Mario game, Wind Waker HD, Donkey kong, Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Game and Wario, and Wii Party U. Most of which had prequels and such that sold excellently on the Wii. Especially considering what PS4 has since pulled off 9 million didn’t seem unrealistic at the time.

        • Magnus Gonzalez

They sold about 3 million. Even Nintendo fans were burnt out on yet another 2d Mario game even as DLC and 3D World is not a true 3D game and came out when other systems were launching and competed against huge games. WindWaker is a remake (brilliantly done but still a remake), Pikmin is not a system seller, nobody heard of TW101 and it is daunting for lesser skilled players, Rayman Legends was delayed, nobody cares about Wario and Wii Party U is more popular in Japan. The reason DK did so well for wii is that the install base was so big when it dropped. It isn’t the type of title that moves consoles. It’s the type you need to own obviously.
None of what they came out with should have made them think massive sales. The closest to that would be 3D World and it did give a slight boost but there were huge games out during that time and two new systems plus Nintendo didn’t exactly market the shit out of it like they could have. I just don’t see how they could have seen how sales fell off a cliff the first half of 2013 when there were no games and Rayman got delayed that they thought those offerings could push 9 million consoles. PS4 probably won’t do much more than that in it’s first year. It’s kind of delusional and a sign of awful management to be honest.

          • Assassinated23

The fact that so many of these franchises did so spectacularly well on the Wii gave them hope that lightning would strike twice. Pikmin had a great deal of buzz that didn’t turn into massive sales. They probably didn’t anticipate the total third party drop off either. They expected more sales from every title than they got. They thought Mario 3D World could singlehanded lay reverse their fortunes. They thought they could recapture the lost casual market. They failed spectacularly at all of these, but that doesn’t mean they were delusional to think they might replicate past success with the same formula.

          • Magnus Gonzalez

well, the signs the market was sending (sales plummeting after launch, move to mobile gaming, two competitors launching new consoles, and lack of advertising and 3rd party support) seemed pretty pessimistic. They are low balling now out of fear.

        • Daniel Carvalho

The problem once again was advertisement. Nintendo knew they had it all, but the only game they properly advertised was Mario 3D World (and they only started advertising ti correctly a month before launch). So, although they did indeed have an incredible line up, which could have had easily sold 9 millions consoles (even 5 millions would be darn great!), they blew it all off when they forgot to tell those games were coming. Who knew we’d have new games coming? Us, who research for this kind of news on the internet, but who else?!

All their losses with the Wii U comes from their lack of advertisement!

      • kopaka7

Yeah, I’m glad a realistic prediction finally exists.

  • http://Website.com Shane Michaels
  • M.C. Pauly GooGoo

Wii U has been getting 1-2 games a month? Where have I been? I guess that’s true if you count the lego games and the licensed movie tie-in games and eshop-only titles and the like.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

It gets like 12 games a month if you count all that

      Thing has 327 titles out

  • gamesplayswill

Why is it that so many people think the Wii U will sell 100 million units in 1 year?
Consoles need time to get recognized. The Wii U is already achieving this

  • Dáibhí wotshissurname

I’m glad they realise that the Wii U isn’t gonna sell like the other next-gen consoles, so at least they’ve got the best of a bad situation.

    • DragonSilths

It sold more then Xbox One currently.

      • Stephen Macneil

They have a year head start on the Xbone, but I still wouldn’t be surprised if they still have more overall sales by next March.

      • Dáibhí wotshissurname

The problem with that is that a) The Wii U has been out for more than in year yet Microsoft has already eclipsed half of the Wii U’s sales within one, and b) This is all while Xbox One hasn’t even launched in 25 regions, and will only do so in September, and still It’s outperforming Wii U.

        • DragonSilths

True, but you don’t include the fact that the Xbox One will only do well in the regions its already in. Other then the USA and the UK, Xbox One will do terrible. Much like the 360. I’m not sure what you mean by its out preforming Wii U…There is no incentive to buy the Xbox One when the PS4 does everything better then the Xbox One anyway.

    • Rinslowe

Well I wouldn’t make that call until after June…
Xbox One isn’t exactly flying off shelves either.

      • Dáibhí wotshissurname

Yeah, but it’s still outperforming the Wii U, and bear in mind it hasn’t even launched in more than 25 regions yet, so it’s unfair to put it down under a console that isn’t selling as much, despite it being more available. But I do suppose that there’s a problem if the Xbox One is barely selling in the US of all places.

        • Magnus Gonzalez

The difference between the Wii at this time last year and Xbone this year is that after a decent launch, a highly regarded exclusive (Rayman Legends) was taken away and delayed, leaving the Wii U with nothing. Whereas, with Xbone, they came out with one of the few system sellers it will ever get in Titanfall. Even with that marked difference the Xbone is doing very bad. Not Wii U bad, but if Wii U had come out with Kart last March I imagine the sales would have been much much higher than what Xbone and maybe even might have hit what they have sold to date.

          • Rinslowe

I think it would have been a very different story for Wii U had they waited until at least Pikmin 3 was ready before launching the system. Then WWHD would’ve been close behind followed by SM3DW. W101 would’ve been there as well and a few ok ports like Splinter Cell and a couple of others… It would’ve been helped by people giving NSMBU and Nintendo Land less of a hard time as the console would have looked like quite the exclusive platform…
But, I guess they rolled the dice on their actual strategy quite early as studio’s would have needed some time on their launch title ports…

        • Rinslowe

          I agree.

  • McBlink

Iwata needs to acknowledge that he doesn’t know jack about markets outside of Japan.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

He did. He needs to flush out the shit on his members board

  • WiiUPS4

It’s about time..Games games games..not more please understand stuff

  • Ducked

Nintendo needs to reveal Metroid, and show a new trailer for Zelda. As well as Shin Megami Tensai x Fire Emblem, Yarn Yoshi, and some unannounced game at E3. Also get Kingdom Hearts 3 on the platform.

    • 504HotBoy

Kingdom Hearts 3 would be great. But if Nintendo can get more quality exclusives, that you can only play on Wii U, be it 1st , 2nd or 3rd party. It would make the system much more attractive to gamers who may want to play those games. I rather more exclusives, than 3rd party multiplats. Just wishful thinking, but imagine the announced games we know about, The Legend Of Zelda, Bayonetta 2, X, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem, Yarn Yoshi, Sonic Boom, etc., all exclusives. What about yet to be unannounced games, Miyamoto’s New IP, Maybe a Metroid, maybe a StarFox, possible Devil’s Third being Wii U exclusive, maybe a new form of Eternal Darkness, maybe a new JRPG from Mistwalker, a exclusive Resident Evil from Capcom, Dragon Quest XI, a new IP from Retro, etc. I hope you understand where im coming from, exclusives are far more valuable than 3rd party multiplats. As a owner who own more than one console, I would just get the best version available. But an exclusive, I would be forced to buy it for that platform only.

      • Rinslowe

Gravy. Would be all gravy… :)

      • Jon Turner

Still, wouldn’t hurt to get KH3. Exclusives are nice. And I agree, valuable. But I STILL think some multiplats SHOULD come. Not all, but some.

    • DragonSilths

No matter what Nintendo does there is no “Saving” the console. It will get dragged through the 8th gen slowly, though it will still “beat” the Xbox One in the end. Yoshi Land U and Fire Emblem X SMT were listed on a schedule at the financial meeting yesterday with a TBD for a release date. So we will probably see them next month at E3. Don’t really give a fuck about KH3, it SHOULD be on Wii U and not Xbox One, but frankly I have no interest in the franchise. As for Metroid, that’s a ways away. Starfox is another title that is needed.

      • ScrewAttack

I’m just glad to see M$ get the beating they so thoroughly deserve for the money grabbing shit. So sad that the original xbox team is no more.

        • DragonSilths

lol, I can agree with that.

      • Magnus Gonzalez

would you rather they wait for the next console so they have Metroid and Star Fox and 3d Mario at launch, or have them come out on Wii U? I can see both alternatives. Waiting would at least make sure the same mistake made with 3DS and Wii U wouldn’t happen a 3rd time. Coming out for Wii U would satisfy Wii U owners but imho too little too late by the time they’d be ready. I vote wait

        • DragonSilths

Wii U. Simply because I have no more support for Nintendo’s consoles. I wont be buying anymore console’s of theirs. After 18 years of support I am done with them. I’ll get Wii U games and 3DS games cause I have them already and it would be stupid not to get the most out of what I already have. But the Wii U will be the final Nintendo system I buy. Unless Nintendo turns their shit around and starts listening to their core fans again.

          • Shootdatrupee!…

Psssh. Expect pigs to fly and hell to freeze over before the stubborn childhood makers do that…

Unless they actually learn from their mistakes this time…

    • Magnus Gonzalez

lol…ALL of those things need to happen. Sadly, most likely just Zelda, more X and Smash footage and if we are very lucky something new or smaller. I am not very optimistic but hopeful

  • Nintendoro

Shame this amazing system is struggling. There’s so much life left in it

    • uPadWatcher

Never underestimate Nintendo, its games, or its HD console… the Wii U. This is their year. The Year of the U.

      • Assassinated23

That’s what they said last year. Look how that turned out.

” Iwata seems to finally acknowledge that the Wii U needs more than one or two games from Nintendo every month in order to move the units” – and this is the guy they appointed CEO? No wonder this consoles gone down the Sh!tpipes.. They should of tossed him out long ago.

So if Nintendo makes more consoles that don’t sell, they’ll make money? What kind of cheese is that?

    • Assassinated23

No, if they make more consoles that DO sell, they’ll make money.

    • Suraj Alexander

What?!?! Are you reading the same article as we are?

    • Dáibhí wotshissurname

      Let’s suss this out
-It does cost to manufacture each Wii U, but Ninty formerly sold it for a price less than the manufacturing cost. However, now it’s cheaper to produce, manufacturing Wii U is now more sustainable to them. When people say that Ninty profit on each Wii U sold, they don’t factor the total manufacturing cost of every Wii U ever. They can still make a loss this year regardless.

    • Shootdatrupee!…

      You have 107 up votes…

How is it possible for Nintendo to make two or more games per month (unless they are just throwing terrible quality games together). I think you mean Year.

    • FutureFox

I think she meant games from all sources (including but not limited to Nintendo) coming to the Wii U platform. The writing is a bit too presumptuous.

Once they sell the last batch they will have covered costs up to create ing the first wii u and yhe cost of manufacturing is now lower so they can sell for less. Not meaning each wii u made is profit before being sold.

  • William Cole

This paired with Mario Kart 8 and Pokemon Sapphire& Ruby… Nintendo’s gonna be sitting on cloud 10!

  • SolarShane13

Uh, people.. Nintendo NEVER said this. Your basically taking an Analyst for his word, in which 90% of what a analyst says is crap anyway so Nintendo is probably still loosing money on each Wii U sold.

If they were loosing money before the price drop, what makes you think that they’ll even start NOT loosing money? Price drop = even more money to loose.

  • bad news sells

They could save even more money if they got rid of Iwata. That guy can’t find his butt with both hands and a GPS.
