Nintendo updates Pikmin 3 for touchscreen controls

pikmin-3

Nintendo has always been lauded for their support of titles well after most publishers. Case in point is today Pikmin 3 received a very substantial update that allows better touchscreen controls similar to what was used in the Pikmin Adventure game in Nintendo Land. This is one of the criticisms that was leveled at the game upon its release, as controlling groups of Pikmin was more frustrating than it should have been given the amount of control you should be capable of with the stylus and the GamePad.

This new update comes just in time for people who are now able to choose Pikmin 3 as one of their free games in the Mario Kart 8 promotion, meaning new players will get a better experience than those of us who played through Pikmin 3 last year. Kudos to Nintendo for listening to their customers and keeping their games updated based on that feedback.

I’m all for this update. Using the gamepad before was cumbersome and inaccurate. Now it looks like it’ll be much easier! Wonder if you can control like this in bingo battle as well?

Also good to see them doing free updates for a game this old :)

    • darkcreap

Yep, I could only play decently with the wiimote. Using the gamepad with the double joysticks was going back to the gamecube days I guess. I mean, Did you play Pikmin Adventure? Much more intuitive.

I am going to download this update to try it.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I was fine with the wiimote, but gamepad will be way more convenient

        • darkcreap

Yes, me too, I liked the Wiimote based controlling, but the touch screen worked better for me. What didn’t work at all was the traditional joystick aiming from the gamecube days.

I think I will never be able to use that system to aim in shooter games or anything like that.

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I can do it in shooters, but in pikmin it just doesn’t work

  • MerryBlind .

I haven’t played the game yet, will get it with the MK8 promotion, but I’ve read that Wiimote+Nunchuck+GamePad as Map in front of you is the best way to play the game (Pro Controller or GamePad only, suck from what I understand).

Do these touch controls mean you can basically play the game just like the Wiimote, but instead of pointing where you want to aim, you touch where you want to aim?

Which means it would be great for when playing on the GamePad only, otherwise Wiimote would still be preferable when playing on the TV.

    Did I get this right?

    • Yen

I didn’t have any issues with the GamePad, I think it just depends on the person.

    • C4

      1) Well, it’s definitely a bit easier here and there because you can run into one direction and aim at another. Right stick would do the same in theory but they forgot to implement it.

      2) Sorry haven’t tried it yet…

  • Jack5221

I’ll have to wait until I get home next week before I can try out the newly updated game. I’ll be honest though, I never really had an issue with the controls, but hearing thats improved makes me excited to play again. Also, some more DLC would be nice. ;)

  • Kuromad

Big chunk of kudo’s for Nintendo. But sadly, even though it makes the game more fun with just the gamepad, using a Wii Remote + Nunchuck is still a better experience. Especially when you have a nice big tv.

  • Clel

Oooh this would be nice. Using only the gamepad was very much a pain in the butt.

  • bistricky

It does appear that Nintendo has been doing a lot behind the scenes (during this extended lull between games). Releasing a significant update to Pikmin 3 (on the eve / day of MK8 and all those who will be adding Pikmin 3 as their free game) is very good indeed. Wii U may never win the console war but Nintendo has definitely taken steps to give its name and the Wii U some traction for the future. :D

    • MerryBlind .

      Some “traction” huh? mhh……

  • Nintendofreak

just as im downloading it for free thank to mario kart u.u

    • condor87z

      Same here!

  • palomino blue

Nice to see Ninty putting out meaningful updates independent of an event like E3. Clears any doubt I had that some of their announcements would be fixing functionality on older games like this instead of announcing new games.

  • JB

Sweet! Pikmin 3 is my free DL I chose for MK8! Though I won’t be able to try it for a couple of days, I don’t want to download it until the first couple days of June, so I can register it in July when my coins can go towards the new Club Nintendo year!

  • Ducked

The update came just in time for people looking to redeem this game for free with Mario Kart 8 purchase. One of the complaints with Pikmin 3 was it didn’t utilize the gamepad enough. This should certainly help.

    • RyuNoHadouken

im one of those people…FedEx needs to hurry up and get here!! I’m sitting in the living room with my front door open…hahahaha

      • Ducked

Haha, I’m driving to gamestop to pick my pre-order up now

        • RyuNoHadouken

          YOU SUCK!!!! hahahaha

        • Adam, The Burnout

          Don’t text and drive. Please.

      • Razo_E

I just downloaded it Thursday night like someone from the 21st Century..

    • anonEngadget

I’m surprised people complained that Pikmin 3 didn’t utilize the Game Pad enough. I absolutely love Pikmin 3’s use of the Game Pad. It made jumping between leaders and assigning tasks a piece of cake.

      • greengecko007

It’s because using it just as a peripheral to display a map and change leaders doesn’t provide any extra gameplay experience, although it is helpful for performing very well. Touch based controls provide a completely different way to play, and as a result, offer gameplay experiences not found in the other control options.

        • anonEngadget

The Game Pad allows you direct your leaders to exact pin point locations on the map very quickly.

I don’t think you necessarily need grand integration to demonstrate how valuable having a touch screen on the controller can be.

(to be clear, I am by no means complaining about this update. I think it is fantastic)

          • greengecko007

The gamepad is useful in Pikmin 3, but that usefulness doesn’t equate to anything that changes the gameplay. You play the game the same way with or without the gamepad.
With touch control options now being a thing, you can play the game in a completely different control scheme.

I wish Nintendo would fine tune the already existing controls too though… Being able to use the right stick to aim pikmin rather than rotate the camera would be infinitely more useful.

    • Rob

it should still have motion controls in gamepad, whats the point of that 9axis or whatever there is in gamepad if it is not used in any game sigh

    • Raptok

I already got Pikmin 3. The only two games on the European list that I hadn’t bought that I had ever considered buying were Monster Hunter and Wonderful 101. (I’m getting Monster Hunter, as are all my friends… because multiplayer)

      • YogiGRB

W101 is great though :P but i understand you for the multiplayer part of MH

  • Jeremy

Now if only they had added some extra bingo battle maps… I would even pay for BB DLC!

And online play would have been nice too :p

  • Jason

That’s so funny, I always wanted Pikmin 3 and I am now getting it as my free DL game from Mario Kart 8, and now I get to use the new controls. I remember watching so many reviews that just bashed on the controls.

    • Stuart Thomas

I own all of the games that are offered for DL so i’ll have to choose something that i play often enough, e.g. windwaker hd, so i dont have to keep busting out my disc.

      • Justin Carlson

Sell your game code to a buddy.

      • Jason

Yeah well good luck. ClubNintendo has been down the whole day basically, I haven’t been able to redeem my code. And you could always just get the download code and sell it on eBay.

      • iamserious

        Sell your game code.

    • Sdudyoy

I never had any problems with the controls, and there are enough control styles that if you don’t like one try another :)

  • http://Website.com Shane Michaels
  • Christian Schoff

I still am not sure which game to choose,

  • Sdudyoy

This was unexpected, but very welcome, I wanted this back when the game released.

  • Stuart Thomas

Flipping kmart didn’t get the delivery! But turned out it was a missing box that showed up at 12 in the afternoon and i picked it up an hour ago :)

  • Guest

    • MerryBlind .

Or sell the one with the most value and get it digitally after. Or sell the one you’d rather have digitally than on disc (Personally if I were to get something like Wii U Party I would get it digitally if I had the choice, however I prefer having big games like Zelda on disc).

  • Dimitri Soto

I tried the original controls and can’t believe how much better the stylus is compared

  • darkcreap

Thank goodness!!!! I never understood why this is not a release feature!!!! It was so straightforward in Pikmin Adventure that I couldn’t believe they left it out.

  • Roadkill409

This is the game I was thinking of getting. I don’t have any of the 4 so, I hope I am making the right pick.

    • Matthew Sizemore

I’m getting pikmin 3 because I have the others. If you like mario games new super mario bros U is really fun. I spent so much time getting all the star coins on that game and trying to complete the challenges. Windwaker was great on gamecube and I have yet to play my wii u version but I’ve read it’s even better. Can’t go wrong with pikmin either I’m sure.

      • Roadkill409

Thanks for your opinion. I think Nintendo did a great job with offering the games as an incentive. I bet I won’t be bad with any game. Thanks again, I appreciate your thoughts! How do you like MK8?

        • Matthew Sizemore

No problem. Man, mario kart 8 I played at my nephews last night since my preorder hasn’t arrived yet and I must say I loved it. We spent 2 hours on it 3 and 4 players and the graphics are amazing and framerate so smooth and control is great as usual with mario kart games. I’m even more excited to dive into it now when my copy arrives.

      • 2Макс2

What about Wario? Have you tried it? I prefer quick plays (rounds for 2-3 min) so the choice now is: SMBU or Wario.
Thinking of getting SMBU at the disc though, so should I select Wario, or it’s not worth it?

  • Rinslowe

Solid news. Pikmin 3 just got some new legs…

  • X3Charlie

I was pretty fine though cause I used the wiimote and nunchuck, but I’m glad they’re still making it an even better game!

  • hahahero

Whoa! Has anyone downloaded Pikman as a free game with the MK8 purchase? I just selected it, read the fine print (i use that term loosely), and found this line “Does not include current or future game updates.” Does this mean we don’t get the touchscreen update? If that’s the case, I call bullshit. I get it, its free, that great, but why keep us from any current and future updates? What are loosing if you offer it Nintendo? Surely it can’t hurt the company to allow us to update their game. I hope my interpretation of this line is incorrect. If you’ve downloaded it already please let me know if you are able to use the touchscreen.

    • hahahero

Oops. Just reread that. The statement meant the initial download does not include any updates.

No worries. Move along. nothing to see here.

  • C.S. Bailey

I was wondering what that update was. Was thinking of giving the game to the kid, but I was a little piggy…. Maybe I’ll let her have the digital deluxe bonus….

  • Moreck

    Sweet!!

  • Nope.avi

The only way Nintendo could support games even longer is adding hats to them like another game company…

  • condor87z

Just played this game with my free download, safe to say its amazing. I don’t think I’d like it as much if it didn’t the new stylus controls.

  • Matthew Sizemore

Glad to hear this since I’ll be downloading the game as soon as I get my mario kart 8 registered.

  • tom

How about a update with coop and competitive online play???

  • kentray1985

I hope they add online co-op to 3d mario world so I can I can play with my nieces thats in a whole different state. I dont understand why online co-op was never a option for a player co-op game anyway. I want to use my Nintendo Id to play online games with friends and family, not sit in miiverse and watch kids post random screenshots allday!

    • Winston_from_the_Ministry

I doubt you’ll see online Mario, it’s too precise an experience.

      • C4

Don’t see an issue with a real 3D Mario like Galaxy or 64. Mario 3D and NSMBU are not just coop you can also play against the others here and there – or well, accidentally :P . So having no lag is important.

        • Winston_from_the_Ministry

“Lag” is mostly mitigated by algos that guess where players will be. On a racing game that’s pretty easy, but where players have more options like a 3d mario title, it will cause rubber banding. See Battlefield.
