Devil’s Third developer discusses the Wii U GamePad

wiiu_devilsthird_scrn02_e3

One of the biggest surprises of this year’s E3 presentation from Nintendo was the announcement that Devil’s Third would be coming to Wii U as an exclusive title. The game has been in development since early 2010, where footage showcased the game running on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The game was slated to be published by THQ, so when THQ went belly up many thought the project was dead. With Nintendo rescuing the project from obscurity, producer Yoshifuru Okamoto discusses how the GamePad will be utilized.

One example outlined by Okamoto is being able to call air strikes during the multiplayer mode, as well as being able to share vital squad information.

Actually we do have some GamePad usage in multiplayer. As you know, the setting of this game is this fallen state – a chaotic war that has broken out between different factions across North America. Among those different factions, one of the things that is going to lead to victory is the ability to share information, so we use the GamePad as a communication tool. So you will be doing, among other things, calling in air-strikes and sharing information with squad members. It’s something you can imaging the commander on the battlefield holding to give orders.

Currently there’s no release window for Devil’s Third.

this game looks like it is going to be so fun

  • bistricky

The more I hear about Devil’s First …. the more I realize that it looks like two different games are being offered …. the single player slasher etc. and the multiplayer toy-box war game. If they get the graphics polished …. it will be added to my Wii U game collection.

    • GVGINU

      Devil’s Third.

      • bistricky

        fixed thank you.

        • Rinslowe

I quietly liked Devils “First” more….

          • bistricky

Yeah …. when this game is released, some might think incorrectly that its the 3rd installment and might pass it over.

Then again, some might see it the heavy M-rating and be all for it.

          • Rinslowe

I thought it sounded, better. Like the Devils first; Choice, Heir, Incarnation… Or something.

          • Petri

if it’s good, I hope they make a trilogy counting down.
            Devils Second, Devils First.

          • bistricky

            f’en awesome. Itagaki thanks you.

          • The Clockwork Being

Real fans like Devil’s Second. Devil’s first is clearly overrated and only nostalgia idiots love it

          • Rinslowe

So true. It was a revelation. But then I was like, like you know, like. Mmm Hmm.

    • Ducked

      You forgot to say

      “Cheers :D”

      • bistricky

        LOL …. will do.

        • Ducked

          Just a reminder lol

    • 504HotBoy

I want them to concentrate more on the gameplay. Like I said before, if they can balance out the combination of the shooter & hack n slash elements. The game can turn out to be pretty stylish and fun. Not too worried about the graphics, I’m confident they’re going to polish them up, over the next several months. I’m more concerned about the gameplay.

      • Dark Lord Sauron

nintendo wouldnt put it out in its current state so yea the game will be polished up before release

    • tomtank91

I can’t imagine a graphical polish will do much, the game was intended for the ps3 360 until thq went bump. Plus the devs aren’t well none for there graphics.

      • bistricky

You may be right. Yet, there is hope out there, that with Nintendo’s involvement and using a better game engine …. that this product will be improved. The article spoke about adding some gamepad uses for this game … so hopefully this is a small sign that changes are being made …. the overall appearance of the game, gameplay, quality of controls and the games framerate will hopefully be improved by release time. I can’t see Nintendo wanting to release this new M-rated IP to the gaming community without them believing it is at least decent …….. and if it is not, Nintendo would definitely get a lot of negative press for supporting a game in this genre. In the end, I am hoping and your belief that Devil’s Third will not be polished much, is as good as mine.
        Cheers :D

this is the video to judge. press 1080hd.

        There is more to polish..
But if this is 60fps that is all that f-ing matters.

If you like your games to have lots of sparkles and be 30fps then buy a ps4.

      • Rinslowe

I kinda agree. It looks as though they’ve done a pretty good job with their textures and character models. But the lighting and effects are just getting the job done. Would be nice to see a deferred approach – lol dream on, but even if they just increased the pre baked static and dynamic lighting ratio it would improve the overall look of the game, a lot. It was a little wee bit painful to see when the protagonist takes a swig from his hip flask the background lighting had zero effect on his character model or the environment. Same thing with the out door lamp posts that were just straight up static. At least that’s how it’s looking.
Animations could do with a spruce up as well, I thought.
Don’t get me wrong. It hardly looks like a visual debacle, far from it. Draw distance is a positive and a few other things. But yeah. Not sure how much they’ll change the overall look from now until release. They were confident enough to show it off at E3, with no mention to the state of the game.
I’m gong with, don’t all hold your breath for a major overhaul on visuals.
Just my guess. Would be happy to be proven wrong…

  • Themasteroftruth

This looks ok, which is why it should be on ps4.

    • uPadWatcher

Except the problem is that it’s not published by THQ. Nintendo holds the funding and publishing rights to Devil’s Third EXCLUSIVELY for WiiU.

    • ben

Yawn…. I wish they would take the health warning labels off stuff…….Then I would have less posts like this to read.

      • Petri

Damn those baby safe bottle caps?

  • Rinslowe

I’m happy they’re thinking about gamepad integration. But at the end of the day. I’d rather developers not “force” the gamepad. If it enhances the experience like it did with Deus Ex, & Zombie U then that’s great. If it’s tacked on as an afterthought then I’ll pass…

SUBJECT CHANGE: Want to play a Mariokart match?

      • Rinslowe

Totally, but might not be available until tomorrow about this time or a bit earlier. Wait, are you really good?
And is there still a Wii U Daily tourney still happening Weds?

        • Michael Hancock

Tomorrow sounds good. Am I really good? Eh, not really. I have kids, so I play casually. I’ve unlocked everything except for the gold kart/wheels/parachute, because I don’t like the stats. When I play online (occasionally), I usually come in 1-6. I prefer 1 on 1, I think it is a more skilled race. You know, with all the green shells and fire balls flying in a 12 player match, it gets a bit chaotic on the field. Sometimes you can go from 2nd to 9th because of a random shell. I’ll add you. I wasn’t aware of Wii U daily tourneys.

“Am I really good? Eh, not really.”
Oh that’s good that’s really good. Haha.
            :)
Just jokin. Groovy. Catch you on the track later on…

          • Michael Hancock

I think I got you, though.

          • Rinslowe

Probably, I’m only an average Kart player. But not on account of a lack of playing the game. It’s been the only platform played most times in the last 4 weeks…
I’m coming off the 24/ 7 high now though. But will still put my fair share of time into online, time-trials etc…

  • Ducked

This game is trying to be too much. This is one game that I’d wait to see the reviews until you think about purchasing.

    • Rinslowe

I don’t think I’ll go anywhere near the campaign. But if the level editor is working properly, then I’m probably satisfied.
That’s the part of the review/s I’ll be watching the most.

      • David Trail

Hell, I will be playing the campaign. The campaign is the best thing in games. Multiplayer is a nice bonus after the game is finished or for a break in-between the main game imo.

        • Rinslowe

It’s a deeply personal thing. Of deeply personal proportions…

    • 504HotBoy

Never trust reviews (unless 80% or more of the reviewers are saying the same thing). It’s always best to follow your own judgment, through hands on experience.

    • HavokPants

ALIEN:COLONIAL MARINES had bad reviews but people in my school like it
people have different opinions you wouldn’t wait for reviews of a movie you watch it and test your lluck

  • wober2

I hate this feeling with the wiiu that, since I am a fan of the console, I have to buy everything on launch or the devs wont support the console again. For all other consoles I usually wait for drastic sales. I know my contribution is a drop in the bucket but I hate the guilty feeling if I do not.

    • Magnus Eriksson

You shouldnt feel bad for that. I buy all my Wii U games second hand :)

      • ben

Sure you do magnus…you dont buy anything you spend all your time on here, so it is unlikely you play any games… moron…

        • Magnus Eriksson

I buy games all the time. I have Nintendoland, Zombi U, Tekken Tag, Zelda Wind Waker, New Super Mario Wii U, New Super Luigi U, Super Mario 3D World, Assassins Creed 3, Darksiders 2, Mario Kart 8, Rayman, Wii Party U, Donkey Kong Country Freeze and Sonic Allstars Racing to name a few. All bought second hand like I always do with Nintendo stuff :)

          • ben

You just wrote a list of games.. Show the reciepts… Show us how much you paid…

  • David Trail

Hopefully they can polish it up a bit. Keeping an eye on this to see how it turns out.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Unlikely possible. I think this game pushes Nintendo capabilities to a maximum. If you want great graphics you should look for another console. But the gameplay might be good anyways. Atleast it sounds like they want to shoehorn the pad into the game. It might be fun for those who have waited long for games with pad support :)

      • ben

Magnus you have no idea what you are talking about… As usual.

        • Magnus Eriksson

What do you mean? I meant it pushes Ninde graphics to a maximum. I think it looks good to be a Wii U game. Dont you?

          • Rinslowe

I doubt that is the case looking at footage…

          • Eric Degrechie

No, Devil’s Third is the most graphically unimpressive game they showed at E3. I mean look at Bayonetta 2 and the new Zelda game. Devil’s third looks less graphically demanding than most PS3/360 games.

That said, it still looks fun. Especially the multiplayer.

      • Petri

If you want great graphics, you should forget about consoles all together.

        • Magnus Eriksson

I dont care about graphics. Thas why I have a Wii U.

          • Petri

Neither do I, that’s why I do most of my gaming on Wii U.
My high end PC has been playing only Project Zomboid for last couple of weeks.

          • Rinslowe

            Nice.
            I still play Tetris.

  • HavokPants

as much as i anticipate this game… it won’t sell well it’s nawing at me

    • ben

How the hell do you know?

I’m sick of this bull crap. So a load of crap, games that were already old, ports did not sell on the wiii u so now every game that is made for over 17s wont sell. Just total crap.

      • HavokPants

look i showed this and splatoon to my friends aswell and they said they like the look of splaton and “the other one looks weird” “shite”
and hey look at zombi u that game is GREAT and yet it’s so underated because the graphics but in defence it was a launch title
bad games= sell well (ie cod ghosts ect, ect)
good and creative games= sell bad (i.e timesplitters, zombi u, madworld, bayonetta, mirrors edge)
if this was a simple fps people would throw their money at ninty and itagaki

  • FutureFox

I guess Nintendo is fortifying their positions with this one. If the main game with multiplayer does well then they have a CoD-esque title they can build upon.

    It would be like:

CoD: originally could not enter vehicles
Battlefield: made it so you could enter vehicles
Devil’s Third: multiplayer with anime style assault (swordplay AND guns).

For D3rd it really depends depends how much content their willing to put in for multiplayer. As I recall Max Payne 3 had multiplayer and it was fun but nothing really earth-shattering.

  • brian

The graphics don’t really look bad at all to me. I’d say lousy compression techniques of video websites makes them look bad, though they probably don’t on screen.

    • ben

Yeah, I checked this out on the Japanese Nintendo site and the graphics looked really good. I think bad video compression is definitely to blame.

  • Shrish Kumar

    Everybody body check this out.
This is the support Nintendo gathered and were backstabbed by.

    • Rinslowe

This is old. Why bring it back to life? But still, having said that – @ 1:40….
