Mario Kart 8 ships 1.2 million, fastest selling Wii U title to date

mario kart 8 yoshi piranha plant

Today Nintendo announced that Mario Kart 8 is the fastest selling Wii U game to date, with 1.2 million copies sold since release just a few days ago on May 30 in Europe and North America. Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime had this to say about the title:

“The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead. This year’s E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms.”

Could this be the start of the turn around for the Wii U, similar to what Nintendo engineered with the Nintendo 3DS? Be sure and check out our Mario Kart 8 review to hear our thoughts on the game.

Suuuuper Excited for E3!!!!!! Keep the good News Coming Nintendo :D

  • Sdudyoy

1.2 million is alot for a game on a console that’s only sold around 6 million consoles, for it to sell that much in just three days is amazing!

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

And that’s not even including those who tried to buy but were unable to because of stock

      • Sdudyoy

Or those who can’t afford it like me, I expected it to sell good but not this good.

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Yeah. This is quite above what I expected

        • Nothing5555

I’m in the same camp as you, while I technically have the money for it, its needs to be spent on more expensive things…***cough**…wife/kids….***cough**.

          • Razo_E

I bought it to play with my wife and daughter.

          • Petri

My son is old enough to hold a controller, but too young too keep it in his hands for more than 5 seconds…
Waiting eagerly for the day I can spend time with him playing games.

          • Michael Legault

My son is about the same, you can see he wants to play though.

          • nin-10-doughfan

            i feel ya!

          • nin-10-doughfan

me, is with my 2 sons!

          • Javy G

Same here, and my wife is hasn’t played any other games other than Mario Kart 64 and Mario Party 64 (VC). And now she unlocking every cup while I’m at work and we are teaming up against racers online. These online guys are tough Yoshi’s cookies.

          • Andrew W Garttmeyer

Same here, well, wife, daughter is still only 3 so having trouble, but loves watching!

          • Sean Jarret

Get rid of ‘em… mario kart is worth it – and with the money wives and kids make on the black market you’ll probably have money to spare so you can buy three pro controllers for local multiplayer, too!

          • fireheartis1

I bought it too play with my wife and kids. My son’s say it’s the best Mario Kart yet, even better than Mario Kart Wii which was their favorite Mario Kart until now.

          • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

i’m in the same but i talk with my wife and we make an exception. the game comes next week.

        • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I’m also at the same camp, wanted to buy it but real life caused some issues, I needed to buy another real-life-kart for work and personal life as my old one didn’t make the checkup anymore this year. So after deciding I wanted to buy it, this happened instead, bad luck, but yeah a 14 year old “city car” is not made for lots of long distances, and it gave way. R.I.P.

My birthday is in Juli, so by then I’ll ask it for my birthday from my friends :D

          • Sdudyoy

Yeah, the reason I can’t get it is because me and my family are moving and don’t have the money for games right now, I’m not complaining though, there are things more important that games.

      • ben

If the trend inthe UK is anything to go buy that could also mean nearly a million consoles! 86% of sales of Mariokart were part of a bundle deal in the UK.

      • Fred

Was that a big problem? I haven’t even been to the store to see because I downloaded it.

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I’ve seen people reporting it being sold out

          • Fred

Hopefully they restock quickly. I’d hate to think they missed sales because of a shortage

      • andrewjcole (aka Sean – lol)

        Or eShop buyers.

      • Guest

Hey this might be something for you to talk about
        E3 list for nintendo

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

          Just stop

      • PS4Rocks

        For you

    • matthew garcia

Those are very solid numbers. Smash bros should do the same and hopefully keep the flow of consoles being sold

      • ben

Also, this is after only 3 days.

    • bistricky

We may have to stop saying 6 million consoles and say 7 million (really soon). :D

      • keithmaxx

I say 10 million by the end of the year. XD

        • bistricky

I didn’t think I would say this before Mario Kart 8 but I do think the Wii U will reach 7 million in the next 2 months and who knows 10 million doesn’t seem far-fetched anymore, by years’ end. If it does, gamers can expect a few more games being made for the Wii U. Cheers :D

    • companyoflosers

well also consider that people also went out and bought the wii u specifically for mario kart so the number of consoles has or probably will go up.

    • bistricky

I do believe that beyond Nintendo making a quality game with Mario Kart 8 ….. the smartest move they did was provide a free game to anyone who buys Mario Kart 8 in first 2 months. It will keep the demand going for those to buy the game and introduces many to Club Nintendo and their eShop. Cheers :D

      • ScrewAttack

There was no part of the purchase that didn’t delight. Pay £60 for MK8 from NUK-direct, receive on the day of release without leaving my home, get awesome bullet bill tshirt, red shell key ring and the surprisingly large spiny shell statue (I want those club nintendo MK trophies again now :/ ) and get Wind Waker HD for free. THEN, get £5 back via the digital deluxe promotion for owning a deluxe console, as despite being free WWHD tracks as a purchase and thus getting Minish Cap for free too.

That’s two WIi U titles and a classics GBA Zelda, with extras, for £60. Smartest purchase I’ve made this year (so far?).

        • bistricky

That is really excellent. A bullet bill t-shirt sounds very cool. And all the other items. It is great that Nintendo didn’t give up on the Wii U and decided to give gamers more positive reasons to buy their product. I just returned from my local electronics store “Future Shop” and picked up a few more Wii U games. I asked them how Mario Kart did and the Sales Manager said that all of them sold in a few hours and all the Wii U bundles also sold out. This is from a store that barely carried Wii U games but now will be carrying a lot more. All bodes well for Nintendo and gamers. Cheers :D

      • Rinslowe

Pretty disruptive maneuver, against the competition during E3 as well.

    • Magnus Eriksson

Even I cant troll this one. It is amazing and beyond every expectation. I hope those are sales from new console owners too, then it might be some hope left.

      • Sdudyoy

I honestly in no way saw Mario Kart 8 selling so well, it surprised me.

        • Magnus Eriksson

I know, got goose bumps here. I really, really hope that Ninty will follow up this success with some neat stuff this E3. Wii U could actually be saved now. I never thought this could happen.

          • “Sean” jjbredesen

Yup, i am so happy that it actually went better than i thought, i always thought that when i said MK8 will make Wii U sell fantastic it was more wishful thinking, but 20% of the install base has already bought it in 3 days!! That is crazy!

Now just imagine if E3 is fantastic, we get info about Miyamoto’s new IP and Zelda U is fantastic+ whatever else we will get and then, Hyrule Warriors launches followed by Bayonetta and X, and then to top it all Smash, followed by Zelda in early spring 2015.

Even thought its not a lot of games, it will be great, and when 98% of the 666% rise in UK is bundled Wii U/MK8 just imagine how well it will have done this month!

I know this sounds like a fanboy orgasm, but i think there is a lot of hope, seeing that Wii U also was able to outsell PS4 last week could mean that stuff really could brighten up, and the “U-Turn” could start.

Again i know it sounds extremely optimistic etc. but i honestly think Wii U could stand a great chance now.

I am raising my lifetime sales predictions to: 50M if E3 if great.

          • abe

If they can keep the momentum going this is the turning point. I kinda hope they’ve held bayonetta and x back to build on mk8′s sales

          • http://vozdormidah.blogspot.mx Kopazo~

let´s hope to get to 30M at least, that would mean there´s no failure at all

          • THEMIGHTYDOOVDE

So you finally understand what us Nintendo fans knew deep down. The Wii U might not sell mighty numbers, but just like thd ‘failed’ Gamecube, it will finish it’s generation with a great selection of games.

          • Fboogey

Awww look at you Magnus. Trying to jump on the hype train now. We dont have room for concern trolls :)

      • Marioman21

So positive, Even Magnus can’t troll. Dang, This really must be amazing news.

        • nin-10-doughfan

          like spiderman Marioman21, like spiderman!

        • Mario

If Magnus loves, then there is no doubt that this game will be a blast. :)

      • Casey

        Best comment ever!

      • Officer Raichu
      • Nothing5555

aww you broke out of character, you are supposed to troll no matter what :(

      • Tiago Gomes

        Are u sick Magnus?

    • “Sean” jjbredesen
      • DC777

        lmao

        • “Sean” jjbredesen

Its an old gif, but it never gets old :D

      • nintendope

Does anyone notice the blond one tries to take the other girls dress at the beginning of the gif?

        • nintendope

She even touched a little underboob

          • “Sean” jjbredesen

Who does not want to touch YOSP the great and powerful’s “underboob”?

          • nintendope

lol, He’s actually pretty cool, except the one time he got banned from miiverse.

          • CharlesAnderson

            Banned twice.

      • nin-10-doughfan

        that is neat!

    • Dark Lord Sauron

dont forget how many hordes of gamers try to register their game to get a code for free wii u game download man i had to wait another day to get mine and i manage to download pikmin 3

    • CharlesAnderson

I agree, it is a lot. Not to dampen anyones spirits here but “shipped” does not equal “sold”. Having stated that, they could be selling out, I don’t know. We ordered ours from Wal-Mart with the bundled Mario wheel and it arrived on launch day.

      • Sdudyoy

The title says shipped, but the rest if the article says sold.

        • CharlesAnderson

Which means it’s careless and you don’t know which one it truly is.

          • Sdudyoy

I know, that’s what I was trying to say, but I wrote somthing that more of sounded rude.

          • “Sean” Dimitra Giorgiou

all the other articles (nintendolife and nintendoenthusiast) say it sold 1.2 million making it the 6th best selling wii u game to date

    • Frankie

We do not know how many bundles were sold, so the game could have shipped 500,000 Wii U’s for all we know.

    • Krzysztof

You’re right. This is fantastic result. And to all haters …

    • HyruleMario

not to mention like many stellar 1st party games, this will continue to sell well over the Wii U lifetime whereas Watchdogs sales have pretty much peaked and will plummet. This is a very good showing for Kart. I personally am waiting for a slight price drop but have played it at Target and love it

  • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Yknow, the Wii U might just be turning around after all

    • Fred

      I hope!!!

    • skyloft87

Yes indeed, Zorpix Any word on that MK8 Tournament you were setting up? maybe I just missed the post/forum about it.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I’ll be talking about it wednesday! :D

    • Squid

Mario Kart 8 is a game worth turning it around.

      • Nothing5555

I was actually hoping that Mario 3d World would though MK8 is probably a better choice. The game captures having fun and the ablity to have fun locally with other people as well as online. Kinda of the same magic which Wii Sports and Just Dance series have done (but more for the non-casuals).

        • Squid

To be honest, I’ve been hoping for it to turn around every time a major release would come out, starting with LEGO City Undercover.

        • HyruleMario

me too. I really thought SM3DW would have bumped sales up big time. I think that was the very first time I conceded that the Wii U might be in trouble

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

        eh… kinda

        • Squid

          You don’t enjoy MK8?

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

I do, but it’s kinda limited for a 60 dollar title, and something that’s supposed to save a console

          • Squid

I dunno, it’s better than MKWii, and that was the best selling game on Wii.

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

eh… at least wii had more battle options

    • Magnus Eriksson

Just what I thought. There are some hope left. This made me a little more optimistic. Smash cant come too early now, I hope they follow up with an early autumn release.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

they need a strong fall lineup to capitalize on this

  • ben

    HAHAHAAH Polygons graph!

  • ActivesiN

    that is impressive

  • abe

Not bad sales there, of the rest of the world sees a similar boost as the UK in Wii U sales. I’m sure you’ll see sales boosts in other “long tail” games such as 3D world. Hope people pick up titles like wonderful 101 and zombiU

  • Matthew Stapleton

We’re sold out of the game where I work. We keep getting phone calls of people asking if we’ve gotten any more in stock yet. We had 20 copies sold in under a day. Makes me glad I pre-ordered lol.

    • Fred

Which store is this? This makes me glad I downloaded it!

      • Matthew Stapleton

        I work for Wal-Mart.

  • Rob Lucci

This holiday season is going to be great for WiiU. People going crazy to buy MK8, SSB4, and whatever unannounced games they might mention at E3!

    • Fred

you mean unannounced games we hope they announce at E3. Last year they only announced 1 game at E3 Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze

      • Googs

According to Twitch’s livestream schedule, they have at least 4 unannounced games planned.

      • Rob Lucci

1 game? They announced MK8,DKTF,SSB4. Mario 3D World, Bayonetta,Wind Waker, Wonderful 101, and Pikmin 3.

        • Fred

No they talked about all those and showed all those, but we already knew about all those. W101 and Pikmin 3 had already been played several times

          • Nothing5555

In a way if MK8 came out first before those titles, I bet they would have sold more W101, Pikmin 3, DK, and Mario 3d.

          • abe

Mario games tend to sell well after launch because of this effect. Doubt many of the new owners will grab copies of Wii u third party ports but they will go a pick up the first and third party exclusives

          • Jon

Actually, we never knew about SSB or Mario 3D world, those were announced officially at E3 last year.

          • Fred

No Iwata had already mentioned that Sakari was working on SSB. We didn’t know details about Mario, but Nintendo had said we’d see a new 3D Mario game. So we knew there was a 3D Mario game.

        • Fred

No they only announced DKTF all those others had been announced PREVIOUSLY

      • Sdudyoy

Wasn’t Super Mario 3D world announced last year? or am I wrong?

        • thomas stevenson

          Right

        • Fred

We didn’t know specifics, but Nintendo had already announced that we would get a 3D Mario game so it wasn’t a shock

      • Michael Ocampo

Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 seem to disagree. Oh and X as well.

        • Fred

X was announced in JANUARY 2013.
Yes it was the first time there was demos and trailers for Mario and MK8, but they had already been announced.

  • Gabe Hoffman

HOLY EFFING SHIT!!!! Its really telling when a game sell that much in just 3 days. I wonder how many bundles accounted for those sales

    • Nothing5555

I would like to add, especially a game which does not involve killing, guns, etc.

  • bistricky

Fantastic news ….. this is better then expected …. and all the positive reviews for the game, will help move Wii U’s ……. my neighbour bought a Wii U on Saturday because his family all want to play and because their friends are playing …. suddenly its cool again. Cheers :D

    • Rinslowe

Not to mention, damn competitive online…

  • CydeFxt

Is Mario Kart a bigger franchise than Smash Bros? I ask because i wonder if SSB4 is gonna do better or worse.

    • companyoflosers

just my personal opinion but i think it will do better. no special reason other than i just think its a better game (not that MK8 is bad) and idk, just something about fighting online or with friends in smash bros appeals to me more than racing online or with friends.

      • CydeFxt

I feel like SSB is developing more buzz, or it will. I guess we’ll see.

      • Nothing5555

Fun is subjective, some people think it more fun to play online with their friends than actually going out and doing something with them.

    • A_7

although mario kart wii sold more copies than SSB brawl, i think Smash bros has more hardcore fans and i personally like it Better.

    • Fred

Different bases. Hard core gamers prefer Smash Bros Casual Prefer Kart

      • CydeFxt

Yeah i kinda thought the same thing

      • C4

“Hardcore” gamers still buy Kart though…

        • CydeFxt

          SO TRUE AS WELL

        • Nothing5555

Agreed, a truly “Hardcore” gamer would play any game no matter the system and how good or bad the game is. No that I think about it being a “Hardcore” gamer would suck.

        • Fred

yes and many casual players will still buy smash

    • greengecko007

Mario Kart is the bigger franchise. It has more games in the series than Super Smash Bros. and its games have sold better.

    • Jon

Smash might actually probably do better in the end because of the 3DS version. Also, the fact that the 3DS version is not going to be the same as the Wii U version so those that would buy the Wii U version will probably buy the 3DS one as well though it is hard to say.

      • CydeFxt

good point! I didn’t put that into account.

  • Hipster Victor

Faith in the Wii U restored. I just hope Nintendo keep on advertising for the rest of their games (maybe even some for third parties).

  • Fucked Magnus’s whore mother!

Where’s that pussy faggot Magnus? I’ve got a big plate of crow for him to shove in his big pussy ass mouth. Nevermind, Ill ask his mother where he’s at.

    • Sdudyoy

I don’t think that comment is really necessary.

      • Phoenix Maybe

        Well that’s getting banned
(replied to you because I couldn’t reply to the troll above)

      • Nothing5555

Hahhaha…well it’s fun to see from time to time and only last for a couple of hours.

  • ZeldaFanzzzz

Good job Nintendo!!! Fantastic start!!! I can’t wait for next week e3.

  • uPadWatcher

Time to pop that champagne bottle. Mario Kart 8 selling 1.2 million worldwide in just three days. The flippin’ fun trend will continue.

  • mac

    JAPAN ????

  • WhataShame

No indication of whether or not that includes digital, but the numbers initially usually don’t. Awesome… Nintendo just bought a little breathing room. Now let’s hope they leverage it appropriately and don’t immediately fall back to believe their own hype again.

    • Fred

I don’t think many people downloaded it, but I did. Who wouldn’t want that game to always be on the console screen. You know you aren’t going to sell it back anyway.

      • Saul Rivera

I downloaded it for myself..and than did it to tow other Wii U’s…it’s the best way to get the game at midnight :)

        • Fred

Since I live in the West we get to download it at 10pm the night before because it releases Nationwide at midnight Eastern. By 11pm we were playing.

          • JB

What time zone do you live in? Mountain Time? How long did your download take?

          • Fred

Yes I’m in the Mountain time zone. I think my download took about 30 minutes

      • keithmaxx

I fully agree. I live overseas, though, so I downloaded and played it the moment I got home the day it was released.

  • WiiUisgaming

Go Mario Kart, I will get you this week.

  • janco tianno

Honestly, I think these numbers are great, but I’m afraid that It can cause some inconvenient comments like: “Wow, it was the number 1 (or 2) last week, but this week the sales were poor….”

    Anyway, I didn’t buy mine yet :D

  • iamserious

So it’s not even on sale in Japan?

    • Zuxs13

It was supposed to launch May 29th there

    • bistricky

It is on sale in Japan and the total sales included Japan.

    • keithmaxx

It is, but this is Reggie for America. We have to wait for something from Iwata.

  • A_7

i can barely wait to play this game!!! I’m getting it as Soon as i finish my Finals.

  • darkcreap

Great numbers!!! I prefer to not be too enthusiastic yet, though. let’s wait for a few weeks. I hope the trend goes on an Nintendo gets some steam finally

  • Nothing5555

Gratz to Nintendo! Still need to purchase a Wii U myself, maybe next year :(

  • Phoenix Maybe

  • Googs

    That’s very impressive :o

Nintendo just made 71 million dollars

    • Zuxs13

No they didn’t. But they did make a lot of money

      • ben

Actually, they may have made more. 87% of the Mariokart sales in the UK were part of Wii u bundles…

    • Mithiragi

Remember Nintendo has to subtract taxes, retail margins, and logistics from the total price of each game sold. So maybe $30-$40 earned per game (only applying to retail however). Still, 1.2 million sales is an amazing feat.

  • ZeldaFan83

Finally some good news from Nintendo regarding the Wii U.

  • anthony optimo

One point two million in the hand is better than 1.2 million in the bush.

Just read the Time Magazine On-Line article about the high sales of Mario Kart 8 (over the weekend) and as per usual …. it said that yes, MK8 is selling great but then only talks about how bad the sales of the Wii U is and How the PS4 sells better etc blah blah blah ……. it was like 15% of the article was about the sales of MK8 and that IS the news.

    • Magnus Gonzalez

don’t tell Greengeck, he’ll have a fit trying to prove the media is pro Nintendo lol

      • greengecko007

More like I’ll have a fit over how many people make a mountain out of a molehill. I’m sure you can understand.

    • greengecko007

“it said that yes, MK8 is selling great but then only talks about how bad the sales of the Wii U is and How the PS4 sells better etc blah blah blah ……. it was like 15% of the article was about the sales of MK8 and that IS the news.”

Is this the article from Time that you’re talking about?

      http://time.com/2811076/mario-kart-8-clocked-1-2-million-copies-sold-in-first-weekend-says-nintendo/

Because the only mention of PS4 selling better than the Wii U is one short sentence. As for mentioning Wii U sales, how is that different from what’s going on here? Every sensible WiiUDaily user admits that this is great news, but it has to continue in order for the Wii U to be “saved”.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Exactly. 1.2 shipped doesn’t equate to 1.2 million sold. People tend to jump the gun too soon. I’m sure it sold well, and that’s good for Nintendo. No matter what game it is, shouldn’t give your hopes up so soon. We’ll see how well it does in the coming weeks.

        • Magnus Gonzalez

man, I combed this thread to see if there was going to be a troll trying to downplay Mario Kart sales. For a second I thought maybe you were going to sit this one out. Nope!. Here you are, grasping at whatever negative you can. Exposed bitch. Go away and let us fans enjoy our Nintendo

          • Daniel Gonzalez

The only thing I can read from this is “wah wah wah, how dare you speak the truth and have common sense!.” Chilax, silly guy. Opinions are part of the comment section. If you can’t handle that, then the internet is perhaps not for you my friend. Gotta deal with it. Just like I have to deal with you whackjobs who have nothing better to do besides “combing” threads. As you just exposed yourself into admitting. Sounds like you have too much time on your hands. Now, let us middle-ground individuals converse peacefully, and you go about your crazy fandom. Have a nice night. :P

          • Magnus Gonzalez

sounds like you’re the one crying you bitch ass troll lol. exposing you really does get to you. Priceless.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Sounds like you hate being exposed for being the true troll between us here. Exposing you really does get to you. Especially since it gets you to comment back in defense. It truly is priceless. :P

          • Officer Raichu

I recommend you show him some luigi death stare videos XD

          • Magnus Gonzalez

keep repeating everything I write you unoriginal bastard ha ha ha

        • Officer Raichu

well in the tweet they do give us a little hint of more than a million copies sold
because they said more than One million of you bought mario kart 8 so yeah should be close to the 1.2 million shipping number

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Perhaps, but none of us will know until the official numbers are available. I have no doubts it’s going to sell a few million by the time the hype is over.

  • great deku tree

I just hope that Nintendo announces some big games at E3 that’ll come between now and SSB4. and yes I have my copy of MK8 and it’s amazing! btw is wii u daily actually doing that MK8 online tournament that they were talking about?

  • Jon

Wait, that is 1.2 million copies in just Europe and North America? What about Japan???? So this means that there were more than 1.2 million copies of the game sold so far?

    • bistricky

      1.2 million worldwide.

      • Jon

        not what the article says

“with 1.2 million copies sold since release just a few days ago on May 30 in Europe and North America.”

it doesn’t mention Japan or other regions. Just those two.

        • bistricky

This article doesn’t mention Australia or Japan, but other articles have. Indicating this is a worldwide total (Americas, Europe, Japan and Australia) …. some don’t list Australia but still state this as worldwide totals. No matter, Nintendo has stated that has sold 1.2 million units and that number is only going to increase.

        • bistricky

Here is the official Nintendo Europe posting On Twitter:
[Shibata] We’re thrilled that more than 1.2 million copies of #MK8 have already been sold worldwide! Happy racing!

          • Jon

alright then, pretty silly of Ashely to miss such a big detail make such an assumption

          • bistricky

Well all gaming websites (and plenty of non-gaming websites: like Time and Forbes) rushed to post the announcement from Nintendo. Ashley does a great job for Wii U Daily and to me this is not a biggie of an omission. This is a day to celebrate and for me to learn to get better at Mario Kart 8 (’cause I have yet to finish in the top 3, on a worldwide race). Cheers :D

    • Zuxs13

I think so. I also wonder if this is physical copies only or DL. Be even crazier if it doens;t include DL copies

    • Guest

it’s not 1.2 million copies SOLD, it’s 1.2 million copies SHIPPED. big difference.

      • Officer Raichu

they said over 1 MILLION of you bought mario kart 8 happy racing
its against the rules to lie about sales so im taking it to consumption thats its over 1 million

  • Jack

Well this is just brilliant. This made my day. :D The future’s looking bright! :)

  • SuperSavior

I LOVE playing this game online! Absolutely love it, haven’t played battle mode. Probably won’t until I am pro at VS. Coming into to this I figured it wouldn’t be fun because I played MK Wii to the ground. I was wrong bravo Nintendo this is great momentum going into E3!

    • anthony optimo

Battlemode is pretty fun, it’s the only online mode I’ve tried so far…

  • https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyokn5x1KZdVCAiS6ALeMyQ Palmer27

The free game sold me on it.

  • Marioman21

Dang that is impressive I feel like jumping on a hype train can someone post that.

  • Andrè Follestad Johansen
    • Dominicruz

      good one I laughed! lol

  • “Sean” jjbredesen

Ashley, when are you continuing the Mario Kart 8 competition?? My body is past ready :P

  • Michael Dierlam

Shipping 1.2 million units isn’t the same as retailers selling 1.2 million directly to customers. Let’s hope they go through them quickly. I’m a little concerned because I went to Wal-Mart on Saturday to pick up the game, concerned that it might be sold out. It wasn’t even on display yet and someone had to go to the back, open up a box and sell me the first one.

  • wiimenonowiiu

I tried to get a copie for my friend for his bday non in stock at 3 locations

  • Zuxs13

If it’s sold out go home and Down Load it. It doesn’t take all that long and no wait in line. Plus you get an extra $5 fo r the eShope if you are a deluxe owner.

  • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

It’s also the best Wii U game to date.

  • LevenThumps

This is great news! I’m interested to find out how many of these sells came with the Wii U bundle. I hope Nintendo can keep this up during E3.

  • Jon Turner

Well, doubters, what do you have to say for yourselves now? This game has done the impossible. It has set a new record for WiiU game sales, period. All on a system that you thought was going to be crushed by the competition. Well that obviously hasn’t happened, and if this latest success story is any indication, it won’t be happening at all.

  • Spike Ashford

“Mario Kart sells less and less every year. How is this new one suppose to sell any number of Wii U’s?”

    - A friend of mine.

Will have to link this to him and then watch the shock and awe on his face.

    • Alexander Kleinwechter

if you do, tell us his/her reaction

  • Logan Wayman

*eyes welled up with tears and smiling* Thank you, Nintendo. I knew you could do it.

  • tom

I was thinking 1 million in a month! Fantastic!

  • gerb1977

Great numbers……hoping this includes a big increase in hardware sales. Can’t wait to see what E3 has in store for us. Should be a great year to be a gamer.

  • Ducked

I bet the Wii U will sell over a million consoles this month thanks to Mario Kart 8.

    • Jon Turner

A million may overstretch it, but either way this is GREAT news.

    • oontz

      what’s your wager?

      • Ducked

        $1

  • Zakariyya Al-Quran
    • ben

We should spam polygon with this

    • Brandon

Well they are right. The wii u only has around 6 million units sold, and they predicted with that install base it would sell over 1.2 million. Now that the install base is going to grow the sales of mario kart will also.

    • oontz

How exactly is it hilarious? Looks pretty accurate actually.

      • Zakariyya Al-Quran

that was life time predictions and it already reached it within like 48 hours

        • oontz

Oh I didn’t realize that was lifetime sales predictions. In that case…

    • InterTreble

Epic fail for all the idiots of this site! ;) Good one, friend! ;)

  • Leonel

This is actually good. I like the fact thay it’s old this much and E3 is coming only one can dream but it would be if Nintendo did like a small DLC thing to celebrate that mario kart had a good start

  • Chad Dodsworth

Awesome news! Console sales boosted up to 666%, which is a decent amount for a racing game release.

  • Officer Raichu

    YEAH MK8!
    You continue being a BA

  • Officer Raichu
    • 00EpicGamer00

That poor Goomba, lol. He’s getting smashed over and over again for all eternity. :(

  • BrotherDump

The promotion was a great idea Nintendo good job!

  • Destructonator101

Im pissed off cuz I cant get the game until after the exams are over…

    • Zev York

      we’re in the same boat…

  • ZeldaFan83

1.2 million copies sold in 72hrs. but I wonder if that includes digital sales.

  • MerryBlind .

    This is so good.

  • Linkamus

Downloading the game now…. Going to use my Free Game reward to finally pick up Pikmin3 for free! Suddenly, passing on it early on now seems like a good idea… 8)

  • Rinslowe

    Phenomenal effort Nintendo.
    3 days sales and 1.2 million copies ‘n’ counting…
(is “shipped” here counted as actual sales though? just curious…)

I guess that’s why it took hours just to access the E-shop. Then hours more to download. :)

It was well worth the wait. My son and I have been playing it nearly non-stop, in the waking hours lol. And myself quietly when everyone else is sleeping… Haha.
More polish than a car waxing convention. And the perfect way to pass the time till E3 and my beloved Zelda U reveal.! Woot woot.

    • Guest

Shipped means “shipped” nintendo has shipped 1.2 million units to retail. Not sold.

      • Rinslowe

Actually Mr/ Ms anonymous it’s in comparison to the word “sold” in the article. Hence the question…

        Title:

“Mario Kart 8 ships 1.2 million, fastest selling Wii U title to date”

        Article:

“Today Nintendo announced that Mario Kart 8 is the fastest selling Wii U game to date, with 1.2 million copies sold since release just a few days ago on May 30″

  • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

I cant find a single gif to express how happy I really am about this. So all I can say is:

    http://anonymousasta.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/tenth-doctor-fantastic.gif

  • lonewolf

And do not forget the ones who downloaded their game on the wii u.

  • lonewolf88

don’t worry guys mario kart jesus is here.

  • ScrewAttack

Something I noticed today, for deluxe console owners- have you checked your digital deluxe account for a code since registering your free Wii U title? Cos I got a free £5 voucher for registering WWHD.

  • Mike

Just think how much smash will sell…

  • HydePark1980

Bitch please!!! Was there any real doubt that this game was gonna sell like hotcakes?

    • oontz

      my thoughts exactly.

  • Ben Donaldson

You guys at wiiudaily are the hugest fanboys I have ever met.

    • HyruleMario

well, this is a fan site…what do you expect? It’d be sadder if you were on here and not a fan. Which a few of the posters are. smh

  • sd

Of course this game will sell. There is also the chance that the Wii U will reach the top hardware charts for a few weeks and suddenly sell in excess of 1 million consoles. Does this mean the console is saved? Not without further top quality game releases. This also need to happen fairly soon. Without this the console is not saved.

So lets hope Nintendo announce a huge number of game releases ( or at least 6+) from now until November. Without these sales of the Wii U will once again collapse.

  • Mithiragi

This makes me more excited for E3. I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Nintendo has 4 unannounced titles that they will reveal at E3:
    http://mynintendonews.com/2014/06/02/heres-the-twitch-broadcast-schedule-for-e3-next-week/

    My predictions are:
    1. Zelda U (very likely)
    2. Miyamoto’s New IP (very likely)
    3. Starfox U (maybe?)
    4. F-Zero (my wish, haha)

    Have fun racing guys!

    http://giant.gfycat.com/LimitedFreshAdeliepenguin.gif

    • FutureFox

      Luigi means “assassin” in Italian.

      • Mithiragi

It’s so funny man. He’s such a dick in this game!

  • Dark Link

Keep in mind everyone, this may not include Digital sales or bundled copies. Nintendo, do what you do best…

  • Roman

I believe this is actually the first game I ever bought day 1. No regrets.

    • FutureFox

Impressive! But you are not a Jedi yet. Ever buy a game before getting a console to play it?

      • thedeciderU

castlevania dracula x chronicles. purchased in october, still don’t have a psp. ah crap.

        • FutureFox

          This can be salvagable, maybe.

      • thedeciderU

haha and sonic cd. still no sega cd. though i do have a 32x. yes, i admit it. i sought it out and purchased it. be gentle.

        • FutureFox

Your admittance is punishment enough. : )

    • Rick van der Linde

No way, like for any system?

      • Roman

Yea. The Wii U is the first Console I bought while it was still “current” gen. Usually I would always buy consoles a generation behind and only get games from bagrin bins and stuff (other than PC). Then I got a job, and a couple months later the Wii U came out.

  • oontz

Did anyone really think that MK8 wouldn’t sell? It was always guaranteed to move units and consoles. Now Nintendo needs to keep this momentum and push more consoles out by offering more game content at a quicker rate. The last thing they’d want is for someone to buy the MK8 bundle, and finish MK8… then have no new software for 4+ months, some people may regret their new wiiu purchase, just like early adopters have. Nintendo needs to bring the software NOW, more than ever.

    • FutureFox

As I see it nothing new (worth moving large SW units) is coming out for 4+ months. This was it. I’d be more impressed if this kind of reaction happened to W101 or even DKCTF. Competitive gaming is big, BIG business and MK8 fits the bill. Seems to be the only aspect of gaming culture that gets big sales these days. SMB3 has long left the building.

    • Rinslowe

If people are buying Wii U’s for Kart, then they’d also have all the other first party titles released since launch to get through. Arguably the best time to buy a Wii U was from this weekend onward lol.
It’s the early adopters that may have a long wait between titles if Nintendo doesn’t show a working strategy during E3 and after…

      • oontz

But it could go either way. If people are only jumping on board now then maybe they didn’t see a value in the previous titles offered by Nintendo so far. Sure they may grab some older titles but if new games are not constantly flowing they may still soon regret their purchase.

        • Rinslowe

Nah that’s a stretch. There’s a difference between being motivated to buy into a console because of one title. Which is likely the case for many who picked up a Wii U for Kart. And then purchasing more games now that you have the system.
          I don’t think your example holds water…

Either way, Nintendo does still need to maintain any momentum built.

          • oontz

If the wiiu is their only console, then maybe. I do agree Nintendo needs to maintain this momentum now more than ever. We’ll see soon enough what they have to offer at e3.

          • Rinslowe

“Nintendo needs to maintain this momentum now more than ever. ”
            Yup.

          • oontz

            double yup.

  • Chase U

Holy cow guys the new update is here!!! Wii U System Update 5.0.0 U is live!

      • anthony optimo

  • InterTreble

Wii U sales registered a +666% in UK. Mario Kart 8 is a million seller. Nintendo confirms it is more than alive. Laurel Gonsaless & Hardy Ontzee-Patoonze must be very VERY upset today! :D We told them to put away the champagne when some colossuses like this one weren’t out yet, they didn’t want to listen… This is the revenge for all who LOVE videogames against them, who only HATE, insult and talk like feeling god in the Earth. Mario Kart 8 is devasting! GOTY 2014, definitely! This is OUR entertainment: playing! :)

    • Brandon

Looks like a fun game, I’ve been watching gameplay, but its not going to be GOTY. Maybe best nintendo game of the year.

      • Officer Raichu

smash or x take it this year easily imo

        • Brandon

Most likely not. Its most likely going to be a third party game, and nintendo has not won GOTY for its games in a long time.

          • Officer Raichu

            well smash most likely
if brawl got a 95 on metacrictic being really unbalanced this game can do a lot better

          • Brandon

Well, now batman is coming 2015 :( , it has more of a chance, but look at other game of the year winners or even nominees metacritic scores, and you will see that doesnt even matter. Still my bet is its going to be a third party.

          • oontz

metacritic doesn’t decide what wins GOTY.

          • Officer Raichu

            true o guess

Rest in peace, man. I have more important things to do than feeding a troll (aka idiot) like you. You are hopeless! :D

          • oontz

Cool story. Thanks for sharing. I was wondering do you even own mk8?

          • InterTreble

My Disqus (with !q!, not “c”… don’t edit your messages only to shade your mistakes, coward! ;P) is full of notifications of messages telling nothing from you! :D Even my wife don’t think about me like you! I’m sure, 100%. You are obsessed! Keep calm, otherwise you may suffer from an heart attack! It’s a medical suggestion! :D

          • oontz

so do you have mariokart 8?

          • oontz

          • Brandon

            I dont have it.

I love how you ignored his spazzing. Well played. Lol.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Delusional, obsessed and a fanboy who goes beyond fandom. Basically, he’s a nutjob that needs to get outside more. :P

    • oontz

You are such a colossal idiot… You’re trying to call me out? Just FYI, I own MK8. I have been a Nintendo day 1 supporter since their first home console the NES… all the way up to my deluxe wiiu. I usually buy and own ALL consoles, every generation because I LOVE gaming. You seem to be all about just one console (which is okay albeit short sighted), but you try and call me (and other’s) fanboy(s)? You are hilarious. You are easily the worst fanboy on this site, yet you are completely blind to it. Quite hypocritical to call other people fanboys when it’s you that only supports one gaming platform. Why would I be happy if the wiiu fails? I own a wiiu, I want it to succeed. You need to stop and think before you post sometimes because you sound crazy.

      • InterTreble

You’ve just confirmed you are upset. Very upset! ;) You can only insult. Zero arguments. Zero contribution to the community. Only swearing and trolling. You need a good psychologist, I tell you. Go and look for help, immediately. You need it! It’s a friendly suggestion! ;)

        • oontz

Mate I really think you simply lack the knowledge to understand what you’re typing in English.

“Zero arguments. Zero contribution to the community.”

This is all your posts every are, all of them. I really don’t know how you think I could be upset, I have a wiiu, and MK8 and enjoy playing all the time. Please explain why a supporter of the wiiu and nintendo (me) would be upset about MK8 selling well? Do you see how stupid your posts make you sound. It’s also clear that you don’t have any clue what the word troll means. You are the actual one trolling when you post nonsense like this on here.

Stop being a complete idiot and hypocrite. It’s a friendly suggestion!

          • InterTreble
          • oontz

Actually no, not mad. I find your posts rather funny. Ironic, hypocritical even, but still funny.

          • InterTreble

“Idiot” and “hypocrit*”: these are the only words you know. I told you, your importance and respectability in this community is this one:

            ZERO

I’d love to see another comment of yours full with insults and ignarance. Your ignorance. :)

          • oontz

“”Idiot” and “hypocrit*”: these are the only words you know”

Shall I assume you actually don’t know what “hypocrite” means? You bad mouth other members for things YOU do… All the time. This makes you a hypercritical person, a hypocrite.

“I told you, your importance and respectability in this community is this one:”

That’s great, thank you for sharing your opinion. Funny how you say this to anyone who defends themselves against your outbursts. Maybe you should read the posts of people replying to you to see what this community thinks about you. They aren’t laughing with you, they’re laughing AT you.

“I’d love to see another comment of yours full with insults and ignarance. Your ignorance.”

With that statement I assume you also don’t know what “ignorance” means. Care to share with me how I am showing a lack of knowledge or information. Or what you feel I am being ignorant about. Or is this just another form of your member war?

            Always a good time InterTreble.

So it’s clear you can’t back up your claims or discuss something rationally. You have called me ignorant. I just ask you to back that up. But your level of immaturity obviously won’t allow for this to be civil. Nice picture by the way, you do realize it has zero relevance to your argument, yet I am being called ignorant. You sure are special. Looking forward to what you post next.

“Could this be the start of the turn around for the Wii U, similar to what Nintendo engineered with the Nintendo 3DS?” — Well I been saying it for a long time now. YES.

  • Prizm

Nintendo is trying to palm them off as fast as they can. Here in Aus you can get the Wii U basic pack w/skylanders & Nintendoland, and for an extra $10 you get a copy of MK8.

Headline says ships. Article says sold. Which is it?

    • Prizm

I was wondering the same thing.

so glad it beat my prediction of 1.1 units by the end of the year, more like 5-6mill by then that practical everyone who owns a wii u right now, fantastic news

  • Allvalve

1.2 million units is good. That is most likely the break even point for developing the game.
Of more importance though is how many Wii U’s have been sold as a result.
The Wii U needs to get to 10 million units this year to remain viable, so realistically Nintendo need to ship 750,000 MarioKart bundles in the next month or so before the hype dies down, followed by a Smash Brothers bundle later with roughly the same sell through, and perhaps a mega bundle at Christmas with Pikmin 3, MarioKart and a choice of another game.
Or if sales taper off dramatically again a £175 bundle with MarioKart and another game for the run up to Christmas. .

Mario Kart 8 is the first video game to actually exceed my expectations in a long time. I’m usually playing sports games, shooters and somewhat realistic racers. For some reason I can’t explain, I’m fully addicted to this game. Those who don’t have a Wii U because they read too much instead of just playing games, are really missing out. I feel sorry for them all.

After an epic fail on my part–downloaded MK8 BEFORE creating a Club Nintendo Account for a free game–talked to Customer Service and they fixed my problem. Downloading Pikmin 3.

Interesting thing I’ve noticed since the launch of MK8. There are a ton of brand new (but opened) copies of MK8 for sale… everywhere, the only catch is they don’t include the nintendo club points. Seems a lot of people and store fronts have been buying MK8 just for the points (free game) and then re-selling it.

    • Shootdatrupee!…

That’s kind of stupid actually… Why would you buy Mario Kart 8 just for the free game and the rather small amount of cn points and then get rid of Mario Kart 8?
I mean, it’d be better and probably cheaper to just buy the game itself, since MK8 is newer and more expensive than some of the free promo games…

      • oontz

Hey I never said it was smart… only that I’ve been seeing a ton of MK8 copies for sale online, brand new and it clearly states no nintendo club points inside.

He is stupid, at all. Ignore him, otherwise he will insult you forever.

1.2 Million Sells Already?! The Wii U Is Saved!!!

  • Mario

I swear that I will get Mario kart 8 with a free game before the end of july.
