Did Mario Kart 8’s free game offer affect your purchase?

free-club-nintendo-game

Despite only around 6 million Wii U units in the wild, Mario Kart 8 launched worldwide over the weekend and managed to sell 1.2 million copies. That’s a great number for a first start, but we’ll see whether or not this sales momentum can be sustained over the long-tail, which is where it matters most for Nintendo as a company.

If you’ve registered your game on Club Nintendo to receive your free game, you’ve got a survey waiting on you to fill out. One of the questions that survey asks is whether or not the free game offer from Nintendo influenced your purchasing decision at all. It’s understandable why Nintendo wants information on this, they want to know if doing combo offers like this will inspire more people to purchase their products. If you haven’t already, be sure and fill out the survey on Club Nintendo.

11. To what degree did the free Wii U game download code offer influence your decision to buy Mario Kart 8?

7: Strongly influenced my decision to buy
6:
5:
4: Hard to say either way

1: Did not influence my decision to buy at all

So I’d like to ask our Wii U Daily readers in a public forum, how much did the offer of a free game influence your decision? Were you on the fence about Mario Kart 8 and this offer managed to tip you to purchase, or were you going to buy it anyway and the free game is a bonus? It should be noted that the free game offers in North America were limited to four titles, while Europe had a much larger choice.

Did you already own the games offered on free trial? Let us know!

1: Did not influence my decision to buy at all

I was going to buy it day one regardless of what extra’s Nintendo threw on the game.

  • C4

Nope. Maybe we should vote for 7 to get more free games in the future though lol!?

    • JB

Ha! I was thinking the same thing!

  • andrew

i pre-ordered my copy before they even announced the free game

  • rp17

I had already preordered my copy…

Off topic but anyone notice the changes they made to Miiverse:

    1) Reduced the current comment restriction from 3 minutes down to 2 minutes.

    2) Increased the total character limit for post and comments from 200 to 400 characters.

    3) Increased the total number of notification updates you can view at once under the “Notifications” page from 20 to 50 notifications. In a future update, they are also looking into adding an option where users could turn “Yeah!” notifications on and off.

    4) From now on, “Yeahs!” will also be displayed in your Activity Feed. This includes Yeahs! given by your friends and those you follow. Out of their “Yeahs!”, their latest ones will be displayed.

1: Did not influence my decision to buy at all

For two good reasons: one is that I am a fan and buy almost any game that comes out. Second, because of the first, I already own all of the games I am interested for Europe: Pikmin 3, Super Mario Bros U (Plus Luigi DLC), The Wonderful 101, Nintendo Land and Zelda Wind Waker HD (Be aware that I live in the EU and there we have 8 games to choose).

Actually, I am gonna give away my free game to a relative of mine, so…

  • TheWichi

    I put 6

  • Smurfman256

Kinda. My situation was a bit more complicated than that. What I did was that I saw that they were offering Pikmin 3 as a free game. I then saw that Gamestop was doing an offer where they take off 30% of the price with a trade-in. And since I already owned Pikmin 3, I decided “I’ll just trade in my copy and use the promo to get a digital version.” Since the in-store credit value of Pikmin 3 was quite high (about $25) and then take 30% off the $60 price tag, I got Mario Kart 8 for about $33 and got the digital version of Pikmin 3.

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

      Nice thinking!

    • Geoffrey Tasker

I get double points for trade in. If I did that I could have got the game for free. .. damn it

    • Agent721

I did the exact same thing…$24 at Gamestop.

    • Rich Garriques

      ZING!!

    • FoxMulder900

I have to ask. Does your game’s save file work for both the physical and digital versions of the game? i.e If you started a game using the physical disk, then download the digital copy, does the digital version recognize the save file?

      • Smurfman256

        yup

        • FoxMulder900

          Good to know!

  • Dan Hutt

    3: Kind of

I knew I was going to get Mario Kart 8 on launch, but this really sweetened the deal. I actually held a launch party on Saturday and having a bonus game was really nice of Nintendo. It definitely helped with the MK8 Hype. :)

  • Kyle

I have to say 1: Did not influence my decision to buy at all
because I decided to buy Mario Kart 8 before it was even anounced

    • Stuart Thomas

I’d agree with you! But still, it definately was a bit of a bonus! Although i own all the games, i chose windwaker because it saves me putting that damn disc in every time.

  • leafsfan73

No. Was planning on buying it before I even knew about this offer. Was disappointed in the game selection since I already have them all, especially when I first heard about it I saw the European selection, which included way more games. Monster Hunter 3 and Wonderful 101 (which is the one i wanted).

    • Fred

      Wonderful 101 is only $23 on amazon.com

  • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

7, in the hopes that Nintendo would do more of these offers.

    Realistically, 1.

    • Kobe

That’s exactly what I thought and did while taking my survery xD

    • Clel

Haha that’s exactly what I did. Screw morality when you can get free stuff, amirite?

      • http://www.youtube.com/azhood321 AZHood

Not when it comes to STDs…

        • majora :D

          THIS

        • LopsidedPasta

          lololololol

        • Guest

          Like AZhood said.

    • Daniel Carvalho

i think I would’ve gotten my MarioKart 8 even if they haven’t done that, but I know that influenced a lot of people, specially those who had not yet purchased one of those titles in the promotion. And the more people know about that promotion, the more people will get that game.

    • LopsidedPasta

I think I said a 2. I got Pikmin for free since i already had Zelda and Mario, but I don’t know if I’ll get into Pikmin. It’s very different from games I’ve normally played.

      • Daniel Brown

My brother felt the same way. Then he started playing it.
After getting used to the new GamePad controls, he absolutely loves it.

    • Spencer Manigat

WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THIS!?!?!?!?!?

    • maverickbleh

Ahaha exactly. I was REALLY happy to get a free copy of Wind Waker. But I wanted to buy Mario Kart at launch anyway.

  • JBeauregard

After my last console had issues, this promotion certainly made me run out and buy another! Pikmin 3 and MK8? Hell yeah!

  • Christian Schoff

It didn’t but I was glad to get to play Wind Waker HD.

  • Officer Raichu

Yes it did I bought a wii u which gave me 3 games mk8 free pikmin 3 and metroid on club nintendo

  • ActivesiN

I was going to get MK8 regardless, but at least this way I now have Pikmin 3, which I was never going to purchase

  • Charlieblizz

7, in that it heavily influenced my decision to buy it now. I’m sure I would have picked it up eventually since my kid really wanted it, but that would have probably been around his birthday in October. Give me the free game for buying it now, though, and I’m in – and the game goes on the shelf for a few months except when he’s not around and I want to play it :D

In the future, though, they need a bigger selection of games, or just put a set number of dollars onto our eshop accounts. Loading $40 onto my eshop account might not result in me getting a game published by Nintendo, but it would definitely get me throwing some cash at some more indie games. I think we should be able to transfer coins we earn from registering products into cash in the eshop, too.

  • AM Real

It did influence me to pre-order the game…I was gonna get it, just not on day one or even within the first month…it’s a wonderful deal some might say a steal of a deal. I think ppl should select 5, 6, or 7 anyways even if it didn’t impact them in anyway (hard to believe that) so we might get a similar offer in the future.

  • WarioForever

6 I think, since we Europeans have bigger game selection.

    • darkcreap

      8 actually for Europe.

  • BuckStud

It was an awesome bonus, but I would have bought it without. It’s a fantastic game!

  • Hossenfeffer Jones

I would suggest that the real draw of this promotion is to be a value added proposition for potential Wii U system buyers.
It’s a lot harder to argue against purchasing an already attractive bundle (system, game, and second controller) when there is another free $60 in US dollars potentially in the mix.
Nintendo could have made this a tie in on the bundle, but then the existing players would have been left out.
Everyone’s happier that this is an option across the board for Mario Kart 8 fans, but most people already owning a Wii U would most likely rate this question on the low end.

    • Ibi Salmon

I concur. The promotion in addition to the Mario Kart 8 bundle convinced me that now was the best time to purchase a Wii U.

  • companyoflosers

I really think the offer only affected people who just got a wii u or havent been paying much attention to theirs. The list of games there didnt interest me because with the exception of wii party u and new super mario u, i already had those games. I think its good for nintendo to keep doing this kind of stuff but mario is just gonna take up save space because it was that or wii party u which i had no interest in whatsoever cuz im not a casual player. The reason i want to see this keep appening is because if they wanna keep appealing to new people with these kinds of things, they need to release more games to keep the offers fresh rather than offering the same list over and over.

  • Erik Mozolik

It was a great bonus, but I had it preordered from Target already. Happy to get a free digital copy of Wind Waker and the free wheel from Target tho!

  • andrew

just registered mine they dont ask that in the uk

  • Lusunup

1 was already planning on purchasing it..

  • http://Website.com Shane Michaels

    10. It’s the greatest ever.

  • LevenThumps

7 for me. Mario Kart is always a must buy for me eventually, but this deal made me buy it at launch.

  • Mr Ninty

1 because its mario kart. but i do hope there will be more free game promotions

  • Jason

It didn’t affect my decision at all. Mario Kart 8 was already a must buy for me, the free game was just an added bonus. I got Pikmin 3, and I’m liking it so far.

  • BlackJack21

Mine said that the Club Nintendo password had already been used… So no free game:(

    • Fred

      email club Nintendo

      • BlackJack21

        I think I will, thanks!

  • Slug_DC

I put “4”. Didn’t really know how to answer that one. I would’ve purchased MK8 without the free game, so it didn’t technically affect my decision to purchase. However because the free game promo has a deadline, it pretty much locked in the decision as to /when/ I would buy the game (launch window @ full price).

  • Justin Carlson

I agree with other comments stating that the free game was more for incentive to move consoles, because those with a Wii U would probably have purchased Mario Kart anyway.

Now do this kind of promotion for a less loved franchise and you may see different results.

  • Fred

I was in the “Probably won’t buy” camp until I learned about that offer then I was a “I’m buying for sure!” so I’d have to say it was a 7 for me

    • Fred

Wow!!! Am I really the only one in there that wasn’t going to buy it and then decided to because of the deal?
Here’s my explanation, I loved Mario Kart 64 and I loved Double Dash, but I HATED Mario Kart Wii so I lost interest. My wife and kids wanted it, but I was just going to forget about it. The deal, however pushed me over.
Now that I’ve played it for 8 or so hours I can say I really like this one. I’m not sure I can put my finger on why I hated it on the Wii, but I did.
Now if we can just get them to offer 2 screen (TV and Gamepad) 2-player mode

  • Eduardo

I would buy Mario Kart 8 anyway, the free game promotion only made sure I would buy it and registrate it in time to get the free game (Pikmin 3 for me, which I’ll only get in July after the new CN year starts and I registrate MK8)

  • nintendope

I convinced about 5 people to buy a Wii U with the Mario Kart Bundle: Free remote, wheel, and game… That was a great deal no matter how you see it, I didn’t influenced my purchased but it would to 90% of the people.

  • Madmagican

    5-6
I hadn’t gotten Pikmin 3 yet and this worked out greatly

  • bistricky

It sure didn’t hurt. I’m still getting it no matter if they had the added game BUT it keeps people to consider it even if they don’t get it on the first weekend. BUT so many of my friends are going to finally buy a Wii U and can’t wait to get the bonus game. So, I am a 1 but some of my friends are definitely a 5-7.

  • Geoffrey Tasker

I own all those games save for wii party and being the only person in my home I have no need for that game so is “1” is my answer but I’ll be registering it and downloading something to encourage more offers.

    something we all should do

  • Petri

Not really, since I owned all 7 but Mario and Sonic at sochi.

  • Adrian

7, if no free game i may have waited years to buy, or picked it up used.

  • Zuxs13

4 didn’t influence my decision much because I already planned on buying it but it made it even more appealing. I know it influenced many of myfriends descisions though

  • TheSkeletonMan939 .

It certainly got me more interested in the game; I would have purchased it eventually, but I actually pre-ordered it thanks to that Free Game offer.

  • Fuzzylittlebastard

Is this a limited thing, or is it permanent?

    • Fuzzylittlebastard

Probably Limited. if so, for how long?

      • Petri

end of this month, if I recall right.

        • Ibi Salmon

Actually, it last until July 21st.

          • Petri

Depends where, here it lasts until 31st of July, just checked.

          • Ibi Salmon

Hmm. So it depends on the region. I was not aware of that.

    • Jeffery02

Limited. It’s only available for 2 months

    • Joseph Oliveira

      Limited until July I think.

  • daeglyth

1 — I already own all the games on offer.

  • Petri

Promotion by bergsala didnt let us fill surveys.
But when Bayonetta 2 arrives, and if it has Club Nintendo voucher, I will submit it to UK club Nintendo, just to let them know I bought the console for that game.

  • RetroSquid

Had it pre-ordered since there was a release date, so, nope… Was still going to get Mario Kart 8 on release date no matter what.

  • Helbert Pina

Yes. I wouldn’t buy it day one if it weren’t for the promotion. I’d probably wait some time and try to find a cheaper used copy… ;)

  • Ravi Verma

7 it would be sad for people who had all 4 games should of had something for them to

  • Josiah Parsons

I was already going to pre-order, but the free Wind Waker was the icing on the cake.

  • paulthevgking

    A 6

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

It will influence me a little to get MK8 when I get it (around my birthday I think) I’ll get WWHD, I already own MH3U and the other game offers in Europe don’t really have my interest, so I’ll go for WWHD by then :)

  • disqus_QNIAqtNpHo

it did but i never got my free game:(

    • Ibi Salmon

      Did you register it?

  • Jeffery02

It didn’t affect my decision to get the game. I was going to wait though, this offer just hastened my decision. No regrets though, even if I didn’t get the free game. I haven’t even played the free one yet anyway. Lol!

  • Ibi Salmon

Did it affect my decision? Well, to be honest, yes. Not only did it influence to get Mario Kart 8, it made me decide that now was the perfect time to finally buy a Wii U.

If I already had a Wii U, I would have said 1. But since that wasn’t the case, I would say 7.

  • Tecpedz94

It didnt really affect my purchase it just made my purchase an even better deal. I would of bought the game either way but now i got pikmin as well so its great. In the club nintendo survey i was honest and said it didn’t affect my purchase even though if i said yes we can possibly expect another one of these later on but its kinda unlikely that they do something like this again. I mean a free game, the 10% deluxe promotion plus club Nintendo points is too good of a deal too often lol.

  • jhell

    number 1

  • I am Error.

I would have picked up the game eventually, but the offer helped me decide to pick it up sooner rather than later. And dang, it worked perfectly! I hope it moved some consoles!

  • peeer

While I woulda have bought it anyway sooner or later the promotion did get me to buy it quicker than what I intend to. Since that during summer I don’t have much time to game and I wanted to buy it later because of that. Specifically because the promotion lasts only until July 31st.

    • Zach Waggoner

Only bought it because of bundle. Haven’t owned kart since the 64

  • Thomas Vienna

I had all of the offered games already, and I wouldn’t have the harddrive space to download them anyway, since I still am going without extra storage.

  • BIG Franky

given the fact that I already own all 4 of the offered games, it had zero impact. I would’ve purchased MK8 anyways.

  • Gregory G Wied Jr

I probably would have bought it, anyway, but the offer to get WWHD for free, which I’d also been wanting, made me rush out to get the game. I may still have gotten in day 1, but nothing was stopping me with the free game offer.

  • Andrew Gonzalez

I was going to get it regardless on the first day.

  • NintendoNoob

    I still can’t get onto Club.Nintendo :C

  • beez1717

It didn’t influence my decision at all. I already have NSMBU and WWHD. I am personally not a fan of pikmin and I don’t want the other game so meh.

  • Ron Excell

1 already had it paid off

  • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

it was actually a 10 or 11 for me. I was going to pass, but I was like “eh, might as well”

  • gerb1977

Was going to buy the game right away as I stocked up on eShop cards when Best Buy had them 20% off. I will always take free though! Thanks to the 20% off and the $10 in credits from the ddp I effectively got MK8 and NSMBWU for $38.

  • Mithiragi

Not really. I was going to get MK 8 either way. The free game was just a cool bonus. I had Pikmin 3, NSMBU, and WWHD, so I had to settle with Wii Party U. It’s actually a pretty fun party game. I already had some great times with friends and family.

  • http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008SRISGU#reader_B008SRISGU Adam Howell

I bought it day one. I might not have otherwise. Hard to tell. Though great fun and will get a lot of use from the game, I feel I’m more critical of MK8 than the majority. The free game stops me feeling any disappointment with my purchase.

  • Mithiragi

Anybody know a good external hard drive for the Wii U? I only have about 5000MB left.

    • http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008SRISGU#reader_B008SRISGU Adam Howell

Nintendo recommends some expensive options. I use an old laptop harddrive with a case that cost a few quid on ebay. Powered entirely by a Y usb cable. This cheap set-up still gives significantly better load times than the built in flash.

      • Mithiragi

That sounds good. It’s a good thing you found your old laptop. For me, the only problem is that it would take up 2 usb ports on the Wii U. That’s eventually gonna be a problem when I get the GCN controller adapter, haha.

    • Nick Petlock

I would recommend a 1TB WD Hardrive. They usually go on sale (got mine for $60 at Staples) but they have the best hard drives I’ve ever used.

    • Stuart Thomas

I’m pretty sure most drives should work, and we only get usb 2.0 anyways. The buffalo i think was the one that was “supposed” to be the recommended one.
I’d probably recommend buying a black edition HDD and sticking it in an enclosure, its more expensive, but it’s a much much more reliable drive.

      • Mithiragi

Not a bad idea. I’ll think about it.

  • Virus6

Nope. I was gonna get Mario Kart anyways. Plus I already had all of the games US had to offer (sans Wii U Party, because it’s rubbish anyway). I ended up just giving a Pikmin 3 code away

  • Gabe Hoffman

    7 for me

  • Marioman21

It did not influence my decision but it did influence my friend alex’s decision.

  • Rob Bean

I’m not a huge MK fan, so the free game helped a lot in my case. I suspect I would have picked up MK8 anyway, but would have waited to see it go on sale, or bought it used.

  • Will the3rd

    7.
I saw the game for free was the MK8, a game I’m not interested at all, and the game I was purchasing was Monster Hunter (I’m in Europe).

  • Adrian Brown

It did not, but chose 7 of course ;)

  • Santiago

I already owned all those games, I chose Mario because its the one I come back to the most and now I can play it diskless.
I responded it did not affect my decision

  • Joseph Oliveira

Did not influence my decision. But it is a great deal for people who went to buy a Wii U for this game and then get another one for free.

  • derty

    It didn’t. I was gonna get mk8 regardless. It’s just a bonus ;)

  • Krzysztof

    1. I’d buy it anyway.

  • steveb944

I bought it for two reasons immediately rather than waiting for a slight price reduction.
    1. Free game 2. Limited edition bundle

  • David Trail

Check your account on Nintendo Network Premium as well. I got the free game and three other games because I had £20.00 saved up from buying e shop games.

All together I got Mario kart 8, Wii Party U, Golden Sun, Mr Driller and Kloana

  • Spurtoh

I didn’t even know about it when I bought the game. Then they offer me 3 games for free which I already paid for, and I get Wii Party U. I don’t want to complain about free stuff but now I’ve wasted some cash. Not likely I’ll ever play Wii Party U.
    So 1.

    • David Trail

It is actually really fun imo. Give it a go!

  • Shootdatrupee!…

5: It made me get the game on the first day rather than wait till the price drops…

    • Roadkill409

You might have been waiting for a long time. Beause Mario Kart Wii’s price did not drop for years.

  • anthony optimo

Did not influence my decision to buy Mario Kart 8.

  • Edgar Tapia

3, I was going to buy MK8 sooner or later, but the deal made my preorder it. In addition I got a $10.00 gas gift card and also used Reward Zone money that I had in Bestbuy and I only paid around $33.00 for the two games and got the gas card!

  • Dango

    7. It’s like two AAA games for $30 each and I feel good about supporting Nintendo!

  • oontz

I was going to buy it anyways… but I have seen a ton of brand new copies of MK8 for sale online, opened without the Nintendo Club points. It seems a lot of people bought it JUST for the free game and are now selling the unplayed MK8.

    • Rinslowe

      Whereabouts?

      • oontz

I noticed it mostly on ebay while searching for an english copy to import, but I also saw it on some other sites (both local and north american). I would say maybe about 15% (or more) of the listings I’ve seen were for the brand new game minus the points.

        • ben

Link? Or I am calling BS on this man. I mean if you really wanted those games you could pick them up pretty cheaply on Amazon.

          • oontz

“Link? Or I am calling BS on this man.”

Really don’t care if you call bullshit or not. You can look online yourself. Do a quick search on ebay and check it out.

“I mean if you really wanted those games you could pick them up pretty cheaply on Amazon.”

There is a big difference between “cheaply” and “free”

          • ben

OK, first of all there are like 160 MK8 games listed on Ebay, over half of which are sealed. So 80 people are scamming Nintendo. Well there are over 5000 people selling their copies of Watch_dogs. Your original post was just trolling.

          • oontz

“So 80 people are scamming Nintendo.”

No one is scamming anyone. You are free to do what you want with a retail item you have bought.

“Well there are over 5000 people selling their copies of Watch_dogs.”

Okay, that has literally zero relevance to what we were discussing. Unless watchdogs came with a free ubisoft game code, then not sure what comparison you’re trying to draw.

“Your original post was just trolling.”

How exactly was it trolling? I just bought the game and simply pointed out something that I noticed while I was shopping online for said game. Do you know what trolling means?

          • Daniel Gonzalez

From the crazy fans here, I’d guess it means that it’s a sin to point out anything or even have an observation on the subject of Mario Kart 8. How dare you oontz. You should be burned at the stake. You bastard(sarcasm).

          • ben

You were implying that people just bought the game for the free game only to then resell the game. Isn’t that why you used capital letters for JUST, or did you just slip when you were typing?

          • oontz

“You were implying that people just bought the game for the free game only to then resell the game.”

People ARE selling the game brand new without the Club Nintendo code. What are you not understanding?

        • Rinslowe

Nintendo mentioned something like 1.2m copies were sold and I’m assuming that’s software. Maybe it was indeed “shipped” and not actually sold. But taking downloads into account it’s probably in reality, that many software sales in total. So 1.2m give or take.
Perhaps you saw 15% of 600 physical copies online for sale without the code so 90 odd copies…
Well, I can see your logic on the use of the word “ton”.
          :P

          • oontz

Sorry maybe the word “ton” wasn’t the best… maybe I should’ve used “many” :P but in my opinion it did seem like a lot. Also to note I was only searching for a US retail copy so my findings don’t include any other region or versions. Also worth mentioning, I’ve seen JUST the points cards being sold as well now, although not as much as the un-played MK8 games.

          • Rinslowe

Still, I’m sure you’re able to easily calculate 1% of 1.2m?…

          • oontz

“why would any individual go online to check more than that figure of online software sales of one particular title?”

An individual that has been dieing to play Mario kart since it was announced and said individual lives in a county with no English Nintendo systems or software… That’s who!

            :p

          • Rinslowe

Rubbish. No-one checks 600 versions of the same game online for the right deal…
            Stop the nonsense.

          • oontz

If by check you mean, scroll through web pages, scanning listings, looking for the best possible price (with shipping overseas)…. Then yeah not rubbish.

          • Rinslowe

Looking at even 600 of the same game for price is mental man. What are you peddling?
I thought you said you were dying to get a copy. Not dying to save a couple of cents difference on the “best possible price”…
Even with shipping overseas. Man you think you’re the only guy to use the internet? Lol.

Full retail price vs sale price including int. shipping and you need to browse over 600 copies of MK8 before you make your own mind up on value? You’re selling me pies in the sky right now…

          • oontz

Why are you intent on busting my balls about this?

          • Rinslowe

Is that what you think I’m doing? No no no…!
Man, just calling out them pies.

          • oontz

It just seems like you have an axe to grind with me over this. It was just an observation I made. Take it or leave it, but lets move on.
            :)

          • Rinslowe

            Pies mate… pies…
            :)

            Everybody loves a good pie…

          • oontz

            ha ha ha.

  • Morphballs

I haven’t been able to get on club nintendo in days!!!

  • Roadkill409

I was going to buy the game anyway, but it is nice to have the little extra bonus. From my perspective it is a bonus.
But from a marketing perspective it is genius. What better opportunity would Nintendo have to get a second good game into people hands besides this? None. IMO I think they thought if we can get two good games into people’s hands, it will whet their appetites and they will buy more.

  • Vk-

I said 5. I would buy it anyway, but maybe it helped.

Now i think that i stole Nintendo though, getting both MK8 and WW:HD for the price of one game. I never played WW:HD before and now i don’t even know how to explain how delighted i am. This games was launched in 2002? Why the hell i didn’t played this, it is an unbelievable game. One of the best games i ever played.

MK8 being the best MK to this day, with such tight controls, gorgeous looks, amazing soundtrack and balanced races, serves to let me even more rapt.

Sorry the wall text, but i am trapped on a Nintendo NIrvana state of spirit at the moment. Too much Nintendo Goodness *-*.

  • thomin

Interstingly, in Europe you have a wider variety of games to choose from. I was going to wait until the price drops or I could get a used copy, but then the offer was too good to pass. The only problem was which game to choose. I already had New Super Mario Brothers U, Pikmin 3 and Wii Party and I wasn’t interested in Game & Wario. Which left me with Zelda Windwaker, Mario & Sonic @ Sotchi, The Wonderful 101 and Monster Hunter 3, all of which would interest me. It was a tough call, but ultimately I went for Monster Hunter and so far, I’m definitely enjoying it (despite the poor graphics). Though I do plan on picking the other games up eventually on the cheap. For now, I do have enough on my hands with Mario Kart and Monster Hunter, both of which are shaping up to become games that could capture me for a long time. Plus I got Batman Arkham Origins as part of the 75 Years of Batman promo on the Nintendo eShop for €15, so there’s that as well. Though so far, that game didn’t really take me by storm (despite the nice graphics). In other words, I won’t get bored waiting for the prices to drop.

  • Belfast Gonzo

What annoyed me was the fact that GAME were offering MK8 for £40 on their website, but it was £50 in the high street. The free game softened the blow. As did the extra steering wheel the nice staff member offered when I pointed this out.

  • http://www.cobrablade.com/ Cobra

Sure did, I really hope they do this again since it was a hard choice with so many good games up for grabs too.

  • Scott Duperree

I answered 7 in the survey. It definitely affected the timing of my purchase. I would have wanted Mario Kart 8 at some point, but I had no timeline for a purchase, might not have gotten this til Christmas. Instead I got it day one because I could get Mario Kart and Wind Waker for the price of one game. I couldn’t pass on that deal.

  • Rinslowe

In that it made my purchase decision feel that much more awesome… Yeah, I guess it did.
Being able to claim back premium points for E-shop credit on that free title was the real icing on the cake for me…

    • oontz

“Well done Ninty, smart thinking this time. Have to say.”

Totally agree, they need to do this more moving forward.

  • http://www.roscoeland.blogspot.com Ross

I bought Mario Kart 8 on launch day. The last time I did that was for Goldeneye 007 on N64. Later on I downloaded Pikmin 3 for free. I haven’t played any Pikmin games before, and I think it’s great so far.

  • Mitch Hall

Not really, I would’ve bought Mario Kart 8 regardless.

The free game DOES sweeten the deal, though. I chose Pikmin 3 because it’s really the only AAA exclusive I haven’t played it yet, and it tends to be the most expensive.

  • Gamerrr72

I’d have to say 1. For me, MK8 was a no-brainer purchase so the free download game was just gravy. On top of the free game, I got 120 gold coins from the Nintendo club and another $5 eshop credit from the digital promotion so it was a great deal all around. It’s a great incentive to sell Wii U’s and I think that’s who it’s marketed for. Here’s hoping Nintendo does this again for SSB.

  • Ivan David Espinosa

    A #1 :P

  • kopaka7

It was a 1, but I made $23 in profit by trading in a Pikmin 3 disc before buying MK8 then selecting it as my free game. I also got $5 in credit from the Digital Deluxe Promotion, which Nintendo is offering with the free game, so it was basically $28 total I got. I already owned 3 of the 4 games, and didn’t want to get Wii Party U, because that game is only worth $10 without a Wiimote, so this worked out better.

  • Jon

No, I already own ALL of those games. So my code will be going to my Girl Friend :D

  • Matthew Stapleton

    Two words…….HELL NO!!

  • Nookling

Nope. I already have three of them and Party U isn’t exactly thrilling. (Still got it though)

  • truMADDness

    I would’ve bought it regardless.

  • Linskarmo

If there were more choices like in Europe, then perhaps a few of the free games would be ones I don’t have. If that was so, then definitely 7. As is, 2. I say 2 because I may possibly sell my physical copy of one of those games and then get the digital version for free. Quite the hassle though.

  • C.S. Bailey

I was going to buy the game anyway, the free game actually pissed me off since I knew the EU gamers were getting better choices.

    • ben

I live in Japan! I was always getting the game, however, all I get is month long demo… Fuck you Nintendo.. At least I get brain training for free…… :(

  • LordiMcKill

I gave it a 5, mainly because I was planning on picking up MK8 but the free game gave me more influence to do so sooner rather than later. Also, it saved me time and money cos I picked up Sonic Lost World which I wanted to purchase for a while, just never got around to it and now I’m glad that I didn’t.

They should definitely do more offers like this in the future with say Smash Bros, that’ll definitely drive sales if you get another free game.

  • Steve Rees

It didn’t influence me at all, I was always getting it day one. The free game was a very nice bonus though. I had 6 out of the 10 on offer in the EU, can’t decide between W101 or Sonic.

I would like to say that although it makes a nice change getting more choice in free games than the US, I don’t think it’s fair. I don’t really understand why the US can’t have the same list. I’m guessing it’s because the WiiU needs more of a boost in the EU.

    • David Trail

I’d personally go for Sonic Lost World.

  • mralloverit

Didn’t really matter to me either way. I was getting the game regardless. Since I already own all four of the games listed in the offer, I just give the Eshop code away at some point.

    • Suraj Alexander

OO, could i have it plz, i couldn’tt afford mario kart 8

      • mralloverit

        Are you in the US?

        • Suraj Alexander

          yh

          • mralloverit

Interesting. I didn’t know that was possible. In any case, send me your email address and tell me what game you want, and I’ll forward you the code once I have it. I’m doing the survey as soon as I get off work.

          • Suraj Alexander

Wait where do you live, to know what selection of games you have.

          • mralloverit

I’m in the US as well. It’s a shame our selection of games is so limited.

          • Suraj Alexander

alright i will stick with wind waker the email is surajalexander@hotmail.co.uk, thank you soo much BTW.

          • mralloverit

No problem. I copied the code from the order page and sent it to your email. Let me know how it goes.

          • Suraj Alexander

thx for the code, i can’t check out the code until my exams finish in two weeks

          • Suraj Alexander

If it is US then Wind Waker HD, If UK Monster Hunter and the email is surajalexander@hotmail.co.uk, thank you soo much BTW.

  • Bob

How do i register the game code

    • Joshua

Search Club Nintendo, and go from there =)

  • Vlad_S

    1. I was going to buy it even in double price…

  • SkullScience

No but it was a great offer! I was torn between Zelda and Sonic Lost Worlds. I went for Sonic in the end as I still own Zelda on my Gamecube! It was a great deal with some top games in the offer. Looking at this there seemed to be many less games to chose from in the US, although they are good titles.

  • Jon-Luke Willemsen

I personally was already planning to get the game so the free game was a bonus – #1

  • Hans

Not at all, would have been a first day buyer even if they didn’t offer a free game. The replay value is endless so MK is NEVER a bad investment. It’s my favourite wii U game and probably the best next gen game overall out there, shame PS4 and Xbox one miss out :-)

  • kolikooo1

1, When i heard about this they showed all the games i had, however looks like i just got a free copy of monster hunter.

  • WellWisher

If I say yes will I get more free games?

  • sd

    1) It is the first great game in 6 months and only the second this year so it was a must buy. Having said that it did help make me less annoyed with them. In addition it stopped me selling the console and is a fantastic promotion.

  • Bob

I have the code but how do i register it into the Wii U and get the free download? Do i go the Eshop?

    • Peter Lythaby

Bob yes go to the eshop

  • palomino blue

    1. This game needed no help. But it was a great idea to get people to maybe pickup a title they hadn’t considered. I’d like to see them do this more in the future, even if it’s just with Virtual Console titles.

  • sharlo galmo

    1. Cause Mario Kart is always a good game!

  • andy cadle

Didn’t influence my decision to buy the game at all- Some of the games, as much as i’d like them (still haven’t got Pikmin 3 for example) i’d much rather by the physical boxed copy of the game. The only time i’ll download a game is if theres no physical copy available to buy in the store- Love having an actual collection I can browse through (own over 200 Nintendo games across all platforms, going back to the NES and including handheld games and i’d never get rid of these…)

  • MysteryT

Concidering I own all 10 games you could choose from, it didn’t influence my decision at all. :P

  • Prizm

Yes it did. I bought a new Wii U basic pack with Skylanders and Nintendoland and it came with a free Mario Kart 8. So including the download voucher, I get 4 games for the price of a basic Wii U. The 32GB Premium here in Australia is at least $100 USD more than the Basic, so it’s just not worth it. I’ll sell the skylanders of course, and put the money towards Mario 3D World or something.

  • Razo_E

Don’t forget, if you buy MK8 digitally on the Deluxe model, you’ll get $5 back (and have $10 towards your next credit, as it’s $5 for every $50). If you get Pikmin/WindWaker/NSMBU, you’ll get another $50 credit ($40 for Wii Party U). That’s $10 back (I was only a few $ away from getting another credit, so I personally got $15 from this deal!). So that’s $100 worth of software, for $50. PLUS you get coins from Club Nintendo. You simply can’t beat that.

  • http://its-yuma-tsukumo.tumblr.com/ Yuma Tsukumo

I think it really influenced people in the UK to buy the bundle, as we had more free games to choose from.

  • 16BITDAVE

The offer doesn’t matter, I’d still get the game

  • FlashFan207

Nope. I already had all the games. I was distraught to find out Wonderful 101 was not included. Ball dropped there, but now I’m wondering how to answer that question on the survey. I would very MUCH like the offer to continue going forward.

  • Richard

It increased my willingness to buy it on launch day but I
would have purchased it eventually on sale.
PC gaming has ruined my ability to pay $60 for a new game when most
titles can be had there on release for about $45 via places like GMG.

  • kendawg182

no i thought it was bullshit! i mean i hope it helps nintendo, but I’ve bought all those games.. i bought the wii-u before all the price cuts… i don’t mean to sound like a baby or sound selfish, but what about the loyal nintendo fans who’ve supported this console?! wasn’t the wii-u supposed to be about the core fan?! i was a little displeased. even giving me more coins in the club nintendo shop would have sufficed for me. RANT OVER WITH =] LOL

    • Cyntheta Luis

I mean, I bought all those games too, but I prefer physical copy so I don’t really have as much of a anger issue to it. But you are right, they’ve should have gave you bonus if you have all four games.

    • http://gentlerobot.com/ Gentle Robot

      You could sell the code

  • Michael Dierlam

I would have picked up the game eventually, regardless. The promotion convinced me to pick it up right after release.

  • Thomas Mrak

No. Would have acquired it anyway. It was a nice bonus. It certainly would be beneficial if you didn’t already have other games or have kids.

  • huma_dawii

No really… but i put yes on the survey :B just in case they want to give us more offers like this one xDDDD

  • Glen Parker

7: Strongly influenced my decision to buy

Totally made up my mind. I wasn’t going to buy until I saw it was 2-for-1 with another game I was on the fence about.

  • tmack8001

7, as the wife and I bought the bundle deal as we didn’t upgrade to a WiiU yet… So we don’t have any of the potential freebies.

  • http://gentlerobot.com/ Gentle Robot

I would’ve bought it either way

  • Scott Daylor

I was gonna buy it either way. However the promo did help me to gain more respect for Nintendo and I find myself more likely to keep buying from them in the future. When a company does cool stuff like this I take it as a “thank you” and I just want to keep supporting them.

  • J.r. Storms

I had no idea they were doing the free game offer. I bought MK8 on release day and when i found out i was getting a free download it was pretty awesome. Lets pray to god that they do stuff like this with their other huge titles

  • Wendy

The free game influenced our decision. My husband’s mom wanted to get me a present that I could enjoy while recovering from surgery that was a bit more interactive than flowers – so a video game was the natural choice. We had already discussed getting Mario Kart 8 sometime this year depending on what other games were coming out and if we could afford it. When my husband suggested Mario Kart 8 for my recovery gift I was sold – between the free game (we picked Super Mario Bro. U since we had Wind Waker already) and the free Mario steering wheel, it was a great deal and double the things to do post op! :D

  • disqus_QNIAqtNpHo

    yep
