Mario Kart 8 becomes 2nd best selling game of May with 2 days on the market

mario-kart-8-mario-bike

The NPD Group numbers for May are now available online and while we don’t have specific numbers for these games, we do know their rank. It should be noted that Mario Kart 8 managed to claim the second spot on the top ten chart, despite only 2 dedicated days of sales for the entire month of May. That’s quite a serious bit of staying power for the kart racer and definitely good news for Nintendo.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe for the Nintendo 3DS also topped the chart at number nine, meaning Nintendo was able to get two of its games in the top ten game sales for North America for the month of May. Preliminary numbers for the number of consoles sold seem to hint that Wii U managed to sell 60k in the month of May, no doubt boosted by the Mario Kart 8 bundle that was available for two days. June’s NPD numbers should be even more interesting in determining the long-tail sales potential of Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U.

From what I’ve heard Watch Dogs isn’t anything groundbreaking or too memorable. But I can’t say much as I’ve never played it.
MK8 seems pretty great so far. So far I’ve only found one glitch (aside from a semi glitch online experience). The game really really really needs to add in the following though:
    1. Battle arenas
    2. TIMESTAMPS for each lap, and your final time.
3, Winning sequences where you are presented with gold/silver/bronze.
    4. A full 3 lap N64 rainbow road
    5. (won’t happen, but I would love a new special cup “winning game” score. The jazzy music does not hold a candle to N64s winning game music IMO).

    • Christian Schoff

I agree with all of that except for 4.

      • Adrian

How could you not want to revisit N64 rainbow road in all its glory?? Haha.

        • Christian Schoff

Because I never liked the original. It was too safe because they added rails and if you couldn’t master the shortcut you got absolutely destroyed by those who could. Excuse me for liking to play fair but I love what they’ve done with it. Made it even more gorgeous, removed some of the rails, and got rid of that horrible accidental shortcut. Now it’s truly a Rainbow Road and I love it as much as the others.

          • greengecko007

That’s fine and dandy, but N64 rainbow road not being 3 full laps has nothing to do with any of that.

          • Adrian

Yeah the SNES version without any rails was pretty awesome. The N64 version was awesome though. There were so many glitch shortcuts in MK64 that it just became part of the game. And obviously if you are playing with others you need to make sure they are cool with exploiting glitches.

    • Marioman21

Yeah 1 and 3 especially in my opinion.

    • greengecko007

I’d argue that Mario Kart 8 isn’t any thing groundbreaking either. It’s a very fun game, which is exactly what Watch Dogs seems to be. I fully agree with the things you feel should be added to Mario Kart 8 though.

      • lonewolf

Actually a lot of people backed off of watch dogs only because they downgraded the graphics.

        • oontz

Considering it’s the fastest selling new franchise in the history of video games, I’d say your comment is invalid at best.

          • lonewolf

I know that but a lot of people backed off because they saw it as another gta copy with a new gimmick thrown in there especially since they downgraded the graphics so it couldve sold much more if it kept the original 2012 graphics.

          • oontz

“I know that but a lot of people backed off”

Obviously not THAT many. Ha ha.

      • Adrian

It’s not ground breaking. But it at least reminds me of why I used to love Mario Kart.

        • greengecko007

Did you not enjoy some of the previous Mario Karts? I know that Mario Kart Wii had terrible vehicle balance, but I still found it very enjoyable.

          • Adrian

I couldn’t get into MK Wii. When I played it, it just felt wrong. I skipped gamecube, so not sure how that plays. But Super Mario Kart was one of my first games, and when Mario Kart 64 came out it was one of the first games I felt I mastered. Loved tem both

          • greengecko007

I think Mario Kart 8 does feel a lot like the N64 game. They both have wide tracks, with many branching paths and aternate roots, and the drifting (for karts) feels similar.

          • Ghost8484

Double dash was a beast of the karts!!

    • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

      Agree with 1 and 2. The other 3 I couldn’t care less.

    • bizzy gie

“From what I’ve HEARD, the non-Nintendo game wasn’t anything.

The Nintendo game I’ve actually played was the best thing since slice bread.”

MK8 is shaping up to be a fantastic game, but you don’t need to take from one game to praise the other.

They’re both very fun games with tons of replayability. WD isn’t as timeless as MK, but honestly that’s only because Nintendo releases one MK per platform. They HAVE to make MK games nearly impossible to get bored with.

      And I’ve actually PLAYED Watch_Dogs.

They’re both deserving of their positions on the chart.

      • Adrian

Dude, don’t be a hyper sensitive fan-boy. I’m just telling what I’ve heard. I’m not wishing hell on Watch Dogs. Just chill.

        • greengecko007

It may not have been your intention, but it just looks like you’re trying to down play Watch Dogs and praise MK8. You admit that you haven’t even played the game yourself, and are just regurgitating what you’ve supposedly heard from others.

          • Adrian

Really? You too? Both games have been out for over two weeks. Opinions have been circulated. Why get offended by somebody else’s opinion of a game? It isn’t even my opinion, just what I’ve heard from several others. Again, just chill.

If you have played the game and love it, that’s awesome man. And I’m happy for you.

          • greengecko007

I’m not offended at all, though you are starting to come across as defensive…

Anyways, it’s perfectly fine for you to not think Watch Dogs is amazing or not be impressed by it or whatever, and it’s fine for you to voice that opinion. But like you said, that isn’t necessarily your opinion. It’s the opinion that you’ve heard from others, which seems kind of weird to post.

          • Adrian

I just find it distasteful when people attempt to censor opinions just because they aren’t positive. And no, I don’t have an opinion of Watch Dogs because I’ve never played it.

I’ve also never played Resident Evil 5 but I’ve heard it’s a huge let down. Does it bother you that I’ve heard that as well?

          • greengecko007

I’d rather you form your own opinion and share it, whether it’s positive or negative, than just repeat what you hear from others.

          • Adrian

By that line of reasoning I could never comment on anything unless I had experienced it first hand. It’s extremely common to comment on what you’ve heard about…just about any practice, or consumable object. I don’t see the problem here.

          • greengecko007

That’s not what I’m saying… It’s perfectly possible to have an opinion of something without experiencing it first hand. I often base my opinions on videos, let’s plays, and reviews.

I’m saying that it seems odd to just repeat what you hear from others, rather than forming your own opinion. “I’ve heard it’s not so great from an arbitrary group of people” doesn’t really further discussion, as opposed to “I don’t think it’s that great”.

        • oontz

Well maybe actually play the game before forming an opinion.

          • Adrian

I never said I had an opinion..

      • greengecko007

Have you done many of the side activities in Watch Dogs? I’ve heard mixed opinons about the side content. Some critics say it’s fun, and others say it’s repetitive (which could be because they did them all at once as fast as possible).

    • RecheDiazrivarola

i agree only with the 1

    • Rinslowe

I was quite disappointed by Watch Dogs on PC. So much so that I’m not convinced it’ll be a lot different without proper gamepad support. If it has, then I’ll check it out and maybe even attempt finishing it. There are some fresh elements to it..

And I agree. Timestamps should be included for MK8.

      • oontz

Don’t judge the console version of watchdogs to the PC version. The PC version is full of bugs and issues not found in the ps4 version.

    • palomino blue

Time stamps would be clutch. See what I did there?

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

I wonder if Luigi has something to do with it ?

    • FutureFox

Luigi is now “kicking ass and taking names” on Nintendo’s behalf.

    • matthew garcia

Crazy that ps4 was still the top selling console in U.S.

      • matt

WiiU has outsold xbox one for 4 weeks now in the uk and ps4 for most of them 4 weeks as well….wiiu is going to overtake ps4 in the uk in say 3 months i think quite easy.

        • matthew garcia

The u.k. is where ps4 passed Wii u lifetime sales in 2 weeks with the Wii u having a year head start

          • Darius

Why are people always bringing up “the head start” obviously it means nothing. I’m sure a lot of people were just holding out until every other console got release before they started to make a purchase. It mean it only makes sense when Wii U’s sales shot up 300 percent during the Christmas the other consoles were released (I was one of those people who waited). Then you look at the 3ds I just bought one only a few months ago. If people really want to put the money down for something they will doesn’t matter when it was released. I’m mean people are still buying N64’s! lol

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

The Wii U’s “headstart” was getting the 1 year game drought out of the way before the PS4 and Xbox One had their 1 year game drought lol.

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Which is odd since the UK gamers seem to love Xbox more then anything else…

          • Rinslowe

The UK is one of the absolute worst performers for Wii U so far, until recently.

          • matt

Yes but the wiiu will catch ps4 it has the games to do it….

        • matthew garcia

Also way more people in the u.s. worldwide ps4 lead is pretty sizeable considering the console came out a year after Wii u

      • David

What does that have to do with anything? His comment was about the “Luigi death stare” might have helped with sales.
People are talking about how wii u sales picked up with the Mario kart bundles and all you want to do is start a flame war.
What are you not allowed to be happy about something positive for the wii u?

This is life with you in a nut-shell.
Me:”I just bought a house guys!”

You(in a doofus voice): “ps4 is outselling the wii u!”

Me:”what the f**k?…that has nothing to do with what was said”

    • Rinslowe

I was surprised yesterday when I turned on the console a fast skipped to Mario Kart 8. And at the start up menu Luigi appeared and said “Luigi Kart 8″…
      Made me laugh.

      • greengecko007

I’m so glad they did alternate title screens again. It’s a really ingenious way to add a bit of excitement just from launching the game. My favorite is the one with Mario and the Toad pit crew.

    • https://twitter.com/ChadDodsworth Dunkers7

The crazy thing is that the Luigi memes didn’t start until June! I’m excited to see this months!

  • Jasen Swett

I thought it was funny during Nintendo’s digital event when Reggie was talking about the amiibos and he said they would work on a game we are all playing now Mario kart 8 and he showed Luigi doing the death stare

  • Thomas Fitzgibbon

Nice to see old Kirbs do well on the charts as well. Triple Deluxe is a fantastic game and deserves its success. Really looking forward to the Ambiibo DLC for Mario Kart 8, the existing character roster has too many babies and koopa clones. Plus, some actual proper battle arenas for battle mode wouldn’t go amiss either.

  • BIG Franky

making the numbers even more impressive is that MK8 opened to an install base spanning ONE console and roughly 6.2 million units and Watch Dogs had an install base of around 200 million consoles comprised of five different consoles… that is nuts.

    • matt

If that doesn’t show that games can sell big on wiiu and that 3rd partys are being very stupid ignoring wiiu and its dedicated gamers that actually buy games i mean when you look at it that ZombiU must of sold half a million by now or lots more ??? Ubisoft/EA/Squareenix/ect ect are being paid to stay off WiiU i think because most 3rd party games have sold around half a million ??

      • MujuraNoKamen

Third parties can be retarded sometimes but you have to take into account the sales of their games. Forget crappy ports like Arkham Origins but Wonderful 101 was an amazing unique game, exclusive etc etc and how’d it sell? AC4 and CoD ghosts were good ports too and it’s a similar tory for those sadly.

        • lonewolf

It sold quite great for a new ip nobody have heard off by now if the make a new game everybody would buy it. Even sonic lost world exceeded sales expectations for sega.

          • MujuraNoKamen

Did it? I heard it sold low numbers, failed to break top 10s/20s/whatever upon release and quickly had the price cut.

          • lonewolf

Well at least Platinum was pleased with the sales numbers.

          • MujuraNoKamen

Well I’m glad they’re happy with it but I think W101 deserves so much more :D

          • lonewolf

Yeah I know but I think a lot of people were turned down by the demo (or that was sonic lost world?)

          • MujuraNoKamen

Wonderful 101 demo was hated on, same for Monster Hunter – not sure about SLW I thought that demo was OK, same for W101 too :)

          • lonewolf

So basically the demo is the reason for some people not buying the game as I have read on some youtube video comments that when they played the demo they didnt buy the game but after playing it at some friends house or read reviews or watched some play throughs they have bought the game and had a blast with it.

          • oontz

As of June 7th it has only sold 0.21million units (210,000) GLOBALLY! That is horrible any way you look at it.

          • lonewolf

Which game wonderfull 101m didnt it sold 600.000 units upon release?

          • oontz

Since it’s release it has ONLY SOLD 210,000 copies.

The truth will set you free!

        • Shootdatrupee!…

Ghosts for Wii U was crap. We got none of the DLC(except for like a single map).

          • MujuraNoKamen

Maybe if it sold better we’d have got the DLC but the game itself was fine. And tbh I don’t think many Nintendo fans would have cared for the DLC anyway.

      • greengecko007

The only thing it shows is that Nintendo console owners buy up Nintendo games. I wouldn’t exactly call that breaking news. The sales of actual 3rd party games speak for themselves, especially the ones that were perfectly fine ports.

        • bizzy gie

Yes. Unfortunately, this only proves to third parties that Nintendo gamers only buy Nintendo games.

You can even see that in the comments.

“We don’t need GTA V! We have Pikmin 3!”

          • greengecko007

Hopefully Nintendo will do better with their next console in terms of building it around what 3rd party developers like to use. I think that if a game isn’t too hard to port to the Wii U, there is money to be made, even with a small install base. I think that’s why indie teams seem more ready to take the plunge on the Wii U.

  • Rogelio

How is COD ghosts still on the list?! I mean, COME ON…

    • Marioman21

As much as I hate to say it people love Call of Duty. I am one of only 5 people in my high school that owns a Wii U. I say a good 50% of the guys I know own CODG.

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

        i have it for wiiu

        • Marioman21

I mean on every thing else. I just was saying how good it sells

  • Troy

Comparison is not fair. Mario Kart is for only 1 console.

    • greengecko007

LOL “not fair”. It’s just a list of the highest selling games, which is purely factual. Is second place really so bad?

      • Denvy

It’s not bad, but it’s still comical to compare a platform exclusive to a game released on 5 platforms including last gen. I wouldn’t mind seeing #s for XBO and PS4 Watch Dogs compared for MK8 to even it out a little.

        • oontz

Ps4 watchdogs sold more than mk8, so I’ve read.

          • Denvy

I haven’t seen any official #’s so I really can’t comment. Given the install base is larger it’s certainly possible.=, even likely. But if so, it’s nice to see by how much.

          • oontz

trying to dig up the link, no luck. Sorry.

      • lonewolf

I guess he was talking about how people compered the both in the comments. Or I might be wrong.

  • Dimitri Soto

Mario kart would have been number one if it released on as many consoles as watchdogs. How many watch dogs where sold on the highest console?

    • oontz

Supposedly the ps4 version of watchdogs still outsold mk8.

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

        ehhh, nop

        • oontz

The ps4 version of Watchdogs sold 575000units in America. I know that MK8 moved 1.2million globally, but can’t find the American numbers.

  • Mozellergodt

And some of my friends still try to convince me to buy a PS4. I actually borrowed it, the operating system is amazingly fast but my PC is faster & 90% of PS4 games are cross-platform releases I would rather play on a PC ;p If steambox becomes a success, I think PS4 & Xbox is going to have some trouble.

    • oontz

Are you saying 90% of ps4 games are available on PC? That simply isn’t true.

      • Shootdatrupee!…

I would stick with 70% of good games.

        • oontz

I’d say 70% is even being nice, the actual number would be much lower. That’s basically saying that 70% of the games on PS4 are mulitplat

          • Mozellergodt

Yeah well. 90% might be exxagarating. But most of the stuff that looks interesting (for me) on this list is cross-plat http://www.pushsquare.com/games?region=pal&system=ps4&submit=Filter&sort=rating
Trust me I’ve been looking for a reason good enough to buy it, maybe I will eventually in a year or two.

          • oontz

Fair enough. It’s a great machine though. Wether or not you find value in it is all about personal opinion, right?

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Well, the PS4 was expected to have a drought of 1st party exclusives in its first year. Most new consoles do. I’m positive by 2015, there will be plenty to play. That goes for all three.

    • Jordan Jones

      Destiny says hello

      • Mozellergodt

Destiny is not even out yet. Also after watching it on E3 I was abit dissapointed.

  • Andrew Gonzalez

Not bad for only two days.

  • Brandon

Even though mario kart sold less then watch dogs it still sold good, but you must know that the ps4 version of watch dogs sold more then mario kart. I finally got to play mario kart at gamestop, and I thought it was really good.

  • Marioman21

2 games on the top ten best sellers is pretty good.

  • matt

June numbers Mariokart8 will be on top…..

  • Mozellergodt

Only 1 thing missing for me to be 100% happy with the Wii U. API for making user interfaces and put them on eShop. Personally i would make something like this(needs some polish though):

    • C4

Anything that’s darker would welcome. The smaller icons and artwork or other messages on the left is a good idea though :)

  • Elvis Michael

I hate it how inconsistent they are about their data. Sometimes they release exact hardware/software numbers, and other times they don’t. So im guessing we won’t know how much hardware was sold this month, huh :/

  • greengecko007

That’s pretty awesome. It’s interesting to see both Watch Dogs and Mario Kart 8 on this list, considering the released in the last week of May.

  • Logan Wayman

Hell, yeah! MK8 is #2!!! Just release the Wii U version of #1 and it’s the #1 best-selling game on Wii U!

  • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Watch Dogs is on 5 platforms lol its obvious it would top MK8.

  • Carlos Webster

    Wow, go Nintendo!

  • Leo

Nintendo is laughing all way to the bank :)

  • Potemkin

I need to pick this up, but I will wait until the prices go down.

    • oontz

It’s totally worth full price, especially since you also get a full free game.

      • Potemkin

Thing is, I already have the game I would get with the offer :(

        • oontz

sell it and then re-download it. Unless you have all 4 digital, then just sell the Club Nintendo card.

          • Potemkin

Sadly I have them in digital version :(

          • Christian Schoff

Right. He’s saying get the game and then sell the code.

          • oontz

Yeah sell the code card to a friend or on ebay or something.

    • Shootdatrupee!…

You’ll be waiting for a while. Remember how long the Mario Kart Wii’s price took to go down?

      • Potemkin

        I skipped that one.

Last Mario Kart game I got was Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Double Dash!! Which I loved!

The mechanics in MK Wii didn’t appeal to me at all…

        • Christian Schoff

Well then mate, you are screwed.

          • Potemkin

            Huh? why is that?

          • Christian Schoff

Because the mechanics of 8 are a fusion of Wii and 7.

  • oontz

Mario kart is amazing and everyone needs to play it! Keep in mind these numbers are only for retail, including digital sales mk8 was probably on top.

  • Shootdatrupee!…

There’s been new data on VGChartz!
Mario Kart 8 is the top seller at ~300K, beating any single version of Watch Dogs(although combined WD sales are still greater).
Wii U sales have dropped from last week, but it’s more or less switched places with the Xbox One.

  • InterTreble

Another epic win of Nntendo versus the trolls, haters, blind $ony/M$ fanboys, all also known as idiots, who spam the Internet all the days with their stupid comments. We told them to wait for this games before telling the last word on Wii U. They didn’t want to listen, insulted, continued talking no sense. Now these results mean just one thing: they were wrong, and all they said is coming back like a bomerang. Idiots… nothing else ;)

    • oontz

You’re hilarious. Did you ever get MarioKart 8? Want to play?

      • InterTreble

Why you always feel like called out? Mmmm… so you are saying you are a troll, a hater, a idiot, aren’t you? Otherwise you shouldn’t feel like called out, uh? Admit which is your error: either this comment or your behaviour at all? Because you’ve surely made a mistake…

        • oontz

Why are you being defensive? I am just asking if you want to play MK8. So do you want to play?
