Mario Maker producer wants to include more styles than just Mario

mario maker screens 14

Mario Maker was introduced this past week at E3 as a game that would allow you to make the Mario platformer you’ve always wanted. While Nintendo is predictably going to sandbox you into a set of options defined by them, it sounds like they don’t want to stop at including Mario-themed assets for you to plop around.

Series producer Takashi Tezuka revealed that they want to look at not only bringing more styles than what was shown at E3, but also more styles from outside of the Mario universe. He was adamant in mentioning they didn’t want to overwhelm the user with too much choice (we beg to argue that there’s no such thing as too much choice), but it sounds like there’ll be no shortage of interesting elements, styles and objects for you to toy around with.

Tezuka also reiterated that Mario Maker is meant to be a 2D side-scrolling platformer only — in short, don’t expect the level of freedom that the likes of Microsoft’s Project Spark or Sony’s LittleBigPlanet gives you. Regardless, this should be a very fun and creative game for Mario fans and we’re sure Nintendo will deliver.

They should go back to the idea of making your own Zelda 2D dungeons

  • LevenThumps

So would this be like a NES Remix maker?

  • Frankie

This looks like it will be fun and it is a neat idea, but this is not what the Wii U needs. This game is not going to cause the average person to change their mind about the Wii U. It is a shame Nintendo keeps digging themselves into a deeper hole.

    • Crillan

As if this is the only thing they’ve done…

    • Dark Lord Sauron

oh look a cave troll ^ and by the way theres plenty of games coming for the wii u this year and then more next year

    • TheSkeletonMan939 .

So releasing more games for the system is “digging a deeper hole”?

    • Cutcopy

you do realize this isn’t supposed to be a “system seller” but a fun little game to break up the huge releases

I don’t think they talked much about price but I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a simple low cost eshop/retail game (like Ducktales Remastered was)

  • Archiq09

Do we will can make a DeathRun mod multiplayer? xD

and that will be the first moded app for console!?

  • Ernie Sanguyo

I hope we get to choose the bg music on the custom we make too, would that be cool or what :)

  • jjbredesen

I am really excited for the possibilities this could bring, and i think i will have a lot of fun messing around with this game, i just hope that they are able to include the same amount of content as games such as Mario Flash’s level editor witch includes huge amount of enemies etc. They really need to include a lot if i am going to buy it.

    My hope is Sonic.

  • https://twitter.com/Onyzora Ony

That’s what they meant when they said they wanted to make some 2D Metroid :3c

  • paulthevgking

    so legend of zelda?

  • Squid

Well a Zelda maker would be fun where you can mix between A Link Between worlds and Zelda’s art style.

    • Sdudyoy

That’s what I was thinking, imagine all the insanely hard puzzles people would make.

  • Bob Charlie

    Metroid maker, please!

  • MujuraNoKamen

I hope they do [cheap] DLC Zelda package.
How cool would it be to have Mario run into Stalfos or solve puzzles to get through the castle.
And of course making yoit Zelda dungeons would be geat but I don’t want them to do a ‘maker’ game for every single franchise.

  • MujuraNoKamen

Random but I just remembered. That Fatal Frame wasn’t mentioned at E3 either was it. I was looking forward to that :(

    • Mr Ninty

there is a movie coming about fatel frame if i read i right

I want other mario styles. I’d love the ability to make some large sprawling mario bros 2 levels.

  • J_Joestar

Needs Super Mario World assets to make some Automatic Mario levels.

    • Shota

      well said joseph!

  • MarkyWiiU

    Maybe Kirby?

  • andrewjcole

Automatic level generator like Cloudberry Kingdom?

    • GuardiansFan

search for Infinite Mario Bros…already done :)

  • Gizmo

It’d be cool to make your own galaxy and 3d land/3d world themed levels but it’s probably not gunna happen.

  • lukas

    has anyone heard of smbx

  • greengecko007

I actually quite like this. It puts the gamepad to decent use, which is the Wii U obviously needs more of, and allows for user generated content. My only concern at this point is the price. Anything more than $20 would be a crime in my opinion.

    • David Trail

Depends how much content is in it to be fair.

  • firedragonsage88

This reminds me of Mario Paint, it has a lot of the same themes.
I wish they would make a new Mario Paint. Wii U would be the perfect platform, what with the touch screen and all.

  • Maxwell Baumgarten

Zelda maker would be gr9 actually, making your own dungeons in nes zelda style, with an ALBW secondary style

  • Moreck

I really hope they add SMB 2, 3 & SMW. Ooh, and Yoshi’s Island too!

  • Guest

Metroid (NES) Maker would be awesome. As a kid I drawed hundreds of fantasy stages for Metroid. Would be cool to realize some of those :)

    • C4

      Probably the only way we get a new metroid game ;_;

But good idea, especially in level design I hope they allow larger levels like those in Metroid, also features like an overworld and save games for people who are more dedicated then just to create small obstacle courses.

    • Prizm

ha, I don’t even want to think about how much time it would take to create a decent Metroid world.

  • Nintenjoe82

I am looking forward to the Sonic the Hedgehog asset pack!

  • Ducked

I’m gonna make an impossible level to troll my friends. >:)

For those of you that don’t know, this Mario Maker game is actually going to be a retail game. Not an e-shop indie sort of game (in other words, it’s not an app). Captain Toad is also a retail game. Thought I’d share this information, for those that are confused on this matter.

    • TehEngineer

      It’s still a working title.

      • 00EpicGamer00

        I know. That’s why I’m giving a name suggestion.

    • readypembroke

They haven’t said a thing about if it is going to be retail dodo brain.

      • 00EpicGamer00

        http://www.gamefly.com/rent-games/Browse/?pf=1210&cat=ComingSoon

Scroll down and what do you know? Mario Marker and Captain Toad listed as RETAIL games. Gamefly doesn’t let you rent virtual console games (in fact, anything e-shop related is never on their site). Who’s the “dodo” brain now? :P

        • readypembroke

Thats GameFly not Nintendo. Here is a quote from a Polygon article: “It’s unclear at this point if Mario Maker will be a full retail release or a Wii U eShop title, but it is currently set for release in the first half of 2015.”

          • 00EpicGamer00

Then why does Captain Toad already have a box art? Also, if it wasn’t at all meant to be retail games, then gamefly wouldn’t of jumped the gun and put them on their site.

I know Gamefly will make mistakes sometimes, but they never do anything like this.

          • readypembroke

That’s Captain Toad. CT and Mario Maker are two different games.

          • 00EpicGamer00

I realize that, but why would Captain Toad be a retail game and not Mario Maker? Captain Toad looked more like an e-shop title but turned out to be retail. I think Mario Maker will be the same way. Especially with the amount of content they’re putting into the game. I think it’s safe to assume Mario Maker will be retail. Just look at all the drawing games for the 3DS. They should be e-shop applications, but turn out to be retail.
