Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric coming to Wii U in November

sonic-boom-characters

Plenty of new information about Sonic Boom was released by Sega yesterday, including the fact that the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS versions will be entirely separate games connected by the same lore. Aside from that, we discovered that Sticks is a playable character in the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal.

Perhaps the biggest piece of news is that the Wii U game’s full title is Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and that it will be the first game on Wii U to utilize Crytek’s CryEngine, an engine that EA previously said underperformed on the Wii U due to its hardware limitations. (We know that’s a lie, EA.)

Nintendo announced today that the Wii U game will be releasing in November, with both titles being playable at this year’s E3. Expect to see plenty of previews and hands-on footage of the title there.

MORE HYPE? What else will they reveal???

  • Sean Jarret

“(We know that’s a lie, EA.)”

No! But John told me EA was telling the truth!
(just kidding of course, but why do you always stick him with delivering most of the bad news?)

Watch Dogs need to come out on June or July, so they will be alone with no other game in the shelf

    • Mr Ninty

watch dogs should have come out 27may like the other editions.
but in july/august i hope to be playing bayonetta

      • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

        so June 30

        • Alexander Kleinwechter

i think its gonna come out between mid-august and mid-september

    • Ducked

Ubisoft listed it for Fall 2014. So possibly September.

  • Roadkill409

I hope the game looks nice and is fun. Fun is always welcome.

  • bistricky

Everything about this game looks well thought out and fun. Will pick up day 1. Bring on the games. :D

  • Zuxs13

If this is coming in November i doubt Smash will be Nov. Maybe it will be earlier than Nov and we will see Zelda U in Thanksgiving-Dec time frame.

    • ZeldaFan83

There is no way Zelda Wii U will launch this year, late 2015 at the earliest.

      • gerb1977

I think Zelda will be the May game in 2015. Arriving just ahead of E3 like MK8

      • Zuxs13

Why do you think that? It was already stated by Nintendo that it was ready to show at last years E3?

        • ZeldaFan83

Most Zelda games take years, usually about 5 and Aunuma the man who oversees all Zelda games already said that it will be 2015 at the earliest. I would say late 2015 early 2016. He has also stated that it is the biggest Zelda game they have ever created and the largest undertaking game Nintendo has ever done which means it takes time. This is the first E3 we will see with info about the game, I doubt they will show some info about the game for the first time and then release in a couple months later this year.

          • Zuxs13

I don’t ever remembering him say 2015. The game has been in development since 2011 and they need to change their release of their big franchises, they wont survive with 1-2 mario games and 1 zelda game per-console

          • Ducked

Now lets remember our Zelda history. It seems like the most recent Zelda games like Skyward Sword and Link Between Worlds release in November. I don’t see Zelda releasing this year. So I have to agree with ZeldaFan83.

          • JB

Right. I’ll eat my hat if Zelda releases anytime before November of next year!

          • ZeldaFan83

            Very good point Ducked.

          • Zuxs13

Many Zelda games released in spring as well to include the original Wind Waker. The last 6 games were released between oct-dec so i think we will likely see one this Nov for thanksgiving.

          • Ducked

We might see Majora’s Mask 3D hit the 3DS this November. But as for a new Wii U Zelda, I don’t see it. That’s why Hyrule Warriors is coming out this year.

          • Zuxs13

If we get a remake then I would be fine and agree that Zelda U wont come out this year (though id prefer eShope release for both or a Wii U remake game). But Hyrule Warriors is by no means a Zelda game for this year.

          • “Sean” Dimitra Giorgiou

get your stuff together man, there is no way nintendo would release zelda for another year at least.

          • Zuxs13

Why not? What else are they going to release besides smash bros?

          • ZeldaFan83

The fact that Hyrule Warriors is releasing later this year guarantees Zelda Wii U won’t be coming out this year or early next year. Also when it does come out that would make it the 3rd Zelda title on the console if you count Hyrule Warriors.

          • Zuxs13

Hyrule Warriors isn’t a Zelda game or a Nintendo game and would hold no bearing on whether or not Zelda U comes out. In fact it would make a great tie in for Zelda U since Hyrule Warriors is likely out this summer.

          • ZeldaFan83

It may not be a typical Zelda game and isn’t being developed by Nintendo but it is a game that is built around the world of Zelda which includes Link and other Zelda characters as well as Hyrule field and Hyrule Castle as well as enemies from the Zelda franchise and we’ll know even more about the game in a week. Nintendo isn’t dumb enough to release the game alongside a new Zelda Wii U game, that would just hurt sales for either game plus with Bayonetta 2, Watch Dogs and X probably coming out later this year Nintendo wouldnt release Zelda Wii U and Hyrule Warriors too. That’s just common sense man.

          • Zuxs13

Why wouldn’t they? They released Wind waker then link between worlds along with a 3D mario and a host of other games plus srd party games last year.

Watch Dogs isn’t a factor that is ubisoft, and it wont sell any way. X we have no clue when it will be out. Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule warriors are not first party games, all have is smash and yoshi right now.

          • ZeldaFan83

Nintendo still releases their games around 2nd and 3rd party games and they factor those games into what and when they will release their games. Nintendo also anticipates 3rd party games to fill the gap in between their big release titles. You’ll know more next week.

          • Zuxs13

If they wait for Ubisoft to make a decision about watch Dogs then we wont see any games this fall.

If they cared so much about it they wouldn’t have released MK8 the same times Watch Dogs came out, probably part of the reason why ubisoft delayed WD for the Wii U in the first place.

          • ZeldaFan83

Watch Dogs was delayed because another development company was handling the GamePad features of the game and needed more time because they weren’t familiar with the technology since its a fairly new console and this is the first time this development studio has worked with the Wii U plus the extra time to polish the game is always nice.

          • Zuxs13

Marketing spin. Like it takes them that long to learn how to work with the gamepad… It was money as a leading factor. releasing it the same time as MK8 would have been a total waste of Money for Ubisoft. That is why the game got delayed less than 2 weeks after the MK8 release date announcement.

          • ZeldaFan83

Considering how their Wii U titles have been selling (very badly) it probably wouldn’t be that bad or any worse. I guess we’ll see when it comes out although it’s already available on every other device known to man lol

          • tom

i think watchdogs will sell 80k tops!

          • greengecko007

Hyrule Warriors is slated for August 14. A new main series Zelda game coming out shortly after that and making it into 2014 is a very big stretch.

          • Zuxs13

That would make a ton of sense. It would be a great tie in to the Zelda U game coming later this year. Nintendo often does tie in games, with re releases, or remakes, or eShope releases just before the big game hits.

Hryule warriors is by no means a Zelda game or will it sell all that well.

          • greengecko007

Those tie ins do not include releasing two new games with the same characters in quick succession. Releasing the new Zelda game shortly after Hyrule Warriors is not the same thing as putting A Link to the Past on the virtual console near the release of A Link Between Worlds.

          • Zuxs13

Releasing Wind Waker less than 2 months before a Link between worlds doesn’t count? Or OoT remake and four sowrds remake right before SS for the Wii?

          • greengecko007

Those games are on completely different platforms…

          • Dark Lord Sauron

again zelda u is not coming this year

          • Zuxs13

They are usually only separated by 3-4 years not 5. Only LTTP-OoT and TLP-SS were more than 4 years. And that is only when you exclude the portable versions.

      • D.M.T

Late 2015? Hell nah dude. Zelda will be released either late 2014, early 2015 or summer 2015 but it wont be released in late 2015.

        • 504HotBoy

I’m thinking more 2nd or 3rd quarter 2015. I doubt it’s a 2014 release. They have several amount of titles listed for 2014 already. Don’t think they want to release them that close together. I’m sure there are other titles we unaware of as well that may see a 3rd or 4th quarter 2014 release.

          • Zuxs13

They have one title slated for 2014 left that is first party. Thats Smash. Unless X is coming this year and some secret other game, im betting on Zelda

          • “Sean” Dimitra Giorgiou

they already confirmed X is coming this year.

      • lonewolf88

the game already had a trailer and everything ready to be shown last e3 sayed by miyamoto himself.

    • Alexander Kleinwechter

I honestly dont see wii U zelda gonna be released this year

      • Zuxs13

Why do you think that? It was already stated by Iwata that it was ready to show at last years E3?

        • Alexander Kleinwechter

i think they really want to polish this game. And releasing it with smash bros before christmas maybe be too much!

          • Zuxs13

They have been working on it since 2011. I think its polished. It’s no longer a need for polishing it its a need to have games.

          • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

I agree with Alexander here, I also don’t see Zelda WiiU coming this year, in a week it’s E3 and they will show the game but if a time frame is given it’ll be more likely to be 2015 maybe early 2015 but I think it might even last till summer 2015 at the earliest, and worst case scenario holidays 2015.

We’ll see but “if” and want to press on a big “IF” it comes 2014 I’ll be very happy, but I really doubt it. I’ll wait and see what E3 says. Most sites and youtube channels discussing this Zelda also suggest a 2015 release.

This year, Bayonetta 2, X, Hyrule Warriors, MK8, Smash Brothers, Sonic Boom, Yoshi Yarn and on top of that also Zelda U? Would be awesome but doubtfull. I for one won’t place any bets on a 2014 release. It’s not impossible though, and I’m sure E3 will shed some light on this.

          • Alexander Kleinwechter

yeah, i think nintendo wants also the big games to be spread out a bit and not release all at once, maybe theres a really small chance they want to release it this year, but i dont think so. the game line up this year already looks fantastic, and we already have kinda a zelda game, im preatty satisfied for this year, and im sure next year there will be even more stuff, maybe metroid

          • Zuxs13

They only have one First party big game announced fo r this year so far. Smash Bros. That is likely to come out Aug-oct. So what about the rest of the year. Sonic isn’t their big winter game, and if they delay Smash until then and have almost 6 months between it and the 3ds version people are not going to buy both.

          • ZeldaFan83

Let’s see, well we got DKC in Feb, then nothing til the end of May and by the end of the year we will get Bayonetta 2 which is a 2nd party game but it is being published by Nintendo, Hyrule Warriors which is a Wii U exclusive, then there’s X which is a first party title since Nintendo owns Monolith Software and Smash will most likely come out Winter. That’s a decent amount of titles in 6 months from Nintendo, considering Nintendo only released 2 titles in the first 6 months of this year. Of course there’s Yoshi’s Yarn and it may be a secondary game but its still a Nintendo game none the less so that’s 5 games that we know about by the end of the year and we will know even more next week at E3 about possibly more games coming out soon and specific dates.

          • Zuxs13

We don’t know if X is coming out, we know about as much about X as we do Zelda U, except we know what it looks like. That’s why i said there was only one big first party game announced for later this year.

Yoshi yarn will sell decent and is a good filler game. I hope X comes this year then we might not need Zelda U, but im doubtful about that either.

          • ZeldaFan83

Your probably right about X and Nintendo hasn’t exactly been doing all that good of a job releasing good titles on a frequent basis to keep Wii U owners interested or to attract more consumers so its no surprise that there would only be 1 big title for the rest of the year.

          • Zuxs13

Which is why im hoping and leaning towards Zelda U coming this year. They need something else this year besides Smash, X could work, Zelda U would work better. But then again I am not expecting either, this is Nintendo after all.

          • Zuxs13

Hyrule Warriors isn’t a Nintendo game, MK 8 is already out, Bayonetta 2 is a 2nd party game, we have no idea on X, Sonic isn’t a first party game either, Yoshi is a secondary game, so that leaves Smash as their only big first party title for the year.

Last year they released, wind waker, Zelda, then Mario plus several other titles like Wii Sports club and Wii Fit u all with in 4 months of each other. Along with several 3rd party sprinkled in there.

I don’t see Zelda being in there as implausible at all. Its been in the making for 4 years. Console Zelda games average around 3 years in development time, with the gap between LTTP and OoT being an an oddity at almost 6 years.

          • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Xenoblade Chronicles was in development for 5 years aswell, as far as X goes it’s been in development for almost 5 years now, all Alexander and me say is don’t put up hopes, you might end up dissapointed, we all want the Zelda U experience. I’m not saying it’s not coming this year, but I expect it won’t just to cover against a dissapointment.

It’s possible it is coming this year, but I won’t be surprised at all if it is moved to 2015, they stated it is the biggest zelda game ever. They also said one of the dungeons atleast is split over a huge forest with atleast 3 entrances. We know how Xenoblade ended up took 2-3 years between the first footage (Monado beginning of the world 2008/2009 I forgot) and the actual game Xenoblade coming 2-3 years later in 2011. I don’t think it’ll take 3 years after this E3. We know they pulled Zelda back the last minute before last years E3.

This year they will show the game it could be possible it’ll come by the end of the year. But could just aswell be moved into 2015 (I place my bets on that). I hope you are right and that Zelda comes this year, but atleast personally I’m not placing any bets on a guaranteed 2014 release, instead I wait till after E3 and I’m again personally not expecting to see te release this year.

Just to brace myself for another dissapointment. Truth is we have seen more on X this year and many factors pointing out to a 2014 release on X then on Zelda U. I truly hope you are right. But I just doubt it, a week from now we know more though. I can’t stress it enough that with all my heart I hope you are right and that we see it this year.

        • Dark Lord Sauron

they only wanted to show some of it but the rest of the game is not finished yet

Kind of off topic but about the contest.

Did you guys already send out the amazon gift cards for the MK8 contest? I know you said Rob was busy but did he die or something cause man this is taking forever? Not trying to be mean but I can’t imagine checking a widget takes up that much time out of some ones day.

I can understand if something bad happened but it would be nice to be updated on it. Although I probably won’t win anyway.

    • Suraj Alexander

      been sayin the same thing.

      he is playing mario kart 8 . . . that’s very busy….

      • xPhoenixMoon

I would hope not but I bet he has made time to play the game, which would be disheartening knowing that but we can’t say for sure, I suppose.

I wonder if will we even see part four of the competition. It was supposed to end on the 30th but because it has been late, its still stuck on part three.

I guess it really doesn’t matter much in my case since I bought the game already, but I was just wondering since I did use up my own time advertising the contest on twitter and making entries everyday.

  • Ducked

That’s a shame at least for me. There’s no way I’ll be buying this when its releasing that close to Super Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, and Pokemon Omega and Alpha.

Glad they’re getting this out of the way before E3.

  • Allvalve

Of course, any third party software for the Wii U is good news at the moment, but with Sega’s back catalogue another Sonic game is unlikely to do anything for Wii U sales other than for existing customers who have bought previous Sonic games and already own a Wii U
I don’t think it would be too much of a stretch for Nintendo to buy either a controlling share or large percentage of Sega and use the relationship to leverage some franchises that are outside of Nintendo’s typical offering.
Perhaps a new Virtua Fighter or Sega Rally, or even a new Virtua Racing.
Games that appeal to a different demographic to Nintendo’s own games unlike Sonic.
Or even contract Sega to develop second tier Nintendo Franchises like F Zero and Starfox.
Nintendo need to shift more hardware, no Sonic game can do that.

    • C4

There’s also a Sonic Boom TV animation series which is supposed to launch around the same time as the game. Maybe they hope it gets popular.

      • Mario

If it worked with Pokemon, it can work with Sonic. I think.

    • MerryBlind .

I could actually easily see Sega handling a new F-Zero. Right on with the style of gameplay/presentation they’re good at.

  • JB

It’s funny that Sega just called b.s. on EA’s claim about the CryEngine.

This isn’t the first game to use cryengine. Shadows of the externals was using it too

      • uPadWatcher

Actually, Shadows of the Eternals was using CryEngine 3. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is powered by CRYENGINE (4).

    • Rinslowe

Still, will need to see the finished game before being able to say if any benefits of the cryengine on Wii U. But yeah. We all knew that the western push for game engines to be it’s own equal player in the gaming scene, was just more about pandering to their respective peers. As they lobbied for support. Those engines are all designed to scale across multiple platforms of varying performance levels…

  • greengecko007

I’m not a Sonic fan, but it’s great to have the game coming to the Wii U, and as an exclusive too! If Nintedo gives well timed release dates for Bayonetta 2 and X at E3 there should be a nice and steady release schedule of Wii U exclusive content for the rest of the year.

    • Zuxs13

6 months with 4 games exclusive released in it isn’t very steady. Though its no different then last year.

      • greengecko007

Mario Kart 8 just came out a few days ago. Next week we have what should be a great E3. Hyrule Warriors is set for August 14, Sonic Boom in November, and Super Smash Bros. in December. Additionally, we still have yet to receive release dates for Bayonetta 2 and X, which if they make it out this year, would be 2 more exclusive games, for a total of 6 exclusive games over a period of 6 months. That doesn’t sound bad to me at all.

        • Zuxs13

Yeah MK8 got released end of May. HW is only out in August for japan, Who knows about X it wasn’t given a release date. Bayonetta 2 is scheduled for 2014 and Smash later this year (not Dec) We will likely get Yoshi Yarn in there too. Sonic Boom is not first party but an exclusive.
So of those 5 games we currently only know of 2 coming to the west in the next 7 months of this year, and 2-3 likely coming in there as well. that’s less than one a month.
Don’t get your hopes up too much about E3. The Smash Tournament will be great, and they will show some games but don’t expect anything fantastic.

          • greengecko007

“So of those 5 games we currently only know of 2 coming to the west in the next 7 months of this year, and 2-3 likely coming in there as well. that’s less than one a month.”

I realize that many of these games don’t have confirmation dates. That’s why I said “If Nintendo gives well timed release dates”. I’m not counting on everything working out perfectly, I’m merely saying that it could happen. Although Nintendo has said that the release window for Smash Bros Wii U is Winter 2014, which beings December 21st.

I will admit that I miscounted the games I had listed. It should be 5, not 6, but you also mention that Yarn Yoshi could come out this year.

You’re right about Hyrule Warriors coming out August 14 in Japan, that’s why I said “slated for”. It could come out later for western territories, but I don’t see it being delayed into 2015. Localization does not take a long time.

Long story short, I am, like you, going into E3 with low expectations. But I can also see that Nintendo is in a position to really get a lot of momentum back with the Wii U if they do things right. Whether or not they will is a different story though.

          • Zuxs13

If all those games come out this year it will be a good start. If they can throw in a a Zelda remake, a Retro studios game, or Zelda U they will get people seriously talking about choosing WiiU over competition. That’s why I’m pushing for Zelda u though if its not this year there has to be something else big.

    • ben

THis is made by the people who worked at Naughty dog on Crash Bandicoot. So it will probably be really good.

  • Kenshin0011

I’ll buy it day one! :D

    • ben

You should this is basically the people who made crash bandicoot.

  • TheGamerGeek128

Actually, it was Frostbite that EA said underperformed on Wii U, according to Crytek, CryEngine actually ran quite well on the system.

    • tom

      Way to go EA !

  • sd

The cry engine comment is definitely the best bit about this article. Despite many claims to the contrary power has never been the problem for the wii u. It’s certainly a step up from the ps3 and 360. The issue has only ever been with the game support and lack of first party releases. That aside it is a great system.

  • tom

    Day one purchase for me!

  • Rinslowe

Something tells me this might clash with X… Hmmm.

    • sd

I really am hopeful that X is released this year. If they release x, bayonetta 2, sonic, ssb and hyrule warriors this year, then it has a chance of maintaining decent sales numbers. More importantly it makes me happier.

Oh and considering almost every major game for the PS4 and xbox 1 is being delayed until next year it will also be the only console with a heap of decent game releases towards the end of the year.

    • ben

I think X will release in Japan and Sonic will release everywhere else, they will then release at the same time again 4 – 6 months later. Sonic will come to Japan when X goes to the rest of the world. That makes sense to me.

I’m currently struggling with Sonic Lost World, which I got for free due to the MK8-promotion. Not really sure if I’ll ever really like it but I guess this Sonic game shown here is more the game I’m looking for as I’m quite into the stuff Naughty Dog did in the recent past so I have quite some trust in that team’s ability to really create unique gamingworlds & experiences. But what I’m really looking forward to is a game mechanic that works for me, which was never the case with conventional Sonic games.
