Japanese sales: Mario Kart 8 still hanging on

mario-kart-8-mario-bike

Media Create has released their sales figures for last week in Japan, where Freedom Wars on the PS Vita is still the top-selling title, knocking Yokai Watch for the Nintendo 3DS down to second spot again. The Wii U’s only title on the list clocks in at 4th place. Mario Kart 8 has remained in the top ten for a full month now and as we reported yesterday, has managed to sell 512k units in Japan alone.

Watch Dogs for both the PS3 and the PS4 hang on to respectable fifth and sixth slots, while the rest of the chart is rounded out by PS3 and 3DS releases. FIFA 14 for PS4 manages to claim a spot, most likely thanks to the World Cup events that are happening in Brazil.

In terms of hardware sales the PS Vita is still neck and neck with the Nintendo 3DS in Japan, claiming second spot and selling just a few less than the Nintendo 3DS in top spot. Wii U sits at just under 10k, which means the console is beginning to go back to pre-Mario Kart 8 numbers. Hopefully some of the upcoming games like Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta 2 can begin moving that number back up.

I don’t like hack & slash, guess I won’t be picking up either of those.

    • MerryBlind .

I love hack & slash, guess I’ll be picking up both of those.

      • matthew garcia

I like hack and slash especially if it hads rpg elements. Did you ever play baulders gate on ps2. I loved that game

        • MerryBlind .

Holy shit yes I did. On Xbox (I only had an Xbox that gen).

Dark Alliance games were sooo good. Among my favourite games ever. So much fun with a buddy.

I’ve been thinking of buying them both for some time now.

          • matthew garcia

Yes lol dark alliance was the shit. To much fun with that game. Wish I could find those games

  • TheAnimal Fleming

    And we care why

    • maverickbleh

You’re on a Wii U webpage, that gives Wii U news. This is a valid Wii U news. This is why you should care, since you’re on that page.

    • desgraciado79

Filler articles due to lack of actual news.

      • matthew garcia

Hey your a spurs fan. I’m from San Antonio. I live by houston now but I grew up in the San Antonio area. Go spurs go

        • desgraciado79

Heck yeah! I’m from SA too. I don’t live in Texas anymore and I die just a little bit every day.
          Go Spurs Go!

          • matthew garcia

I went to San Antonio after they won the championship just so I could go to the parade lol. They seemed to have kept the team intact so they should make another run for a championship next year

          • desgraciado79

I hope so. Patty Mills was such a pleasant surprise. It was such a beautiful display of basketball all around. I had to watch the parade online. I’m gonna play some NBA Jam now. Manuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!

        • Keith

Don’t kiss that PS4 lovin troll’s ass. Even if the Spurs are extremely good ;-)

  • palomino blue

Still above ps4/ps3 each week. Doesn’t look like anyone is doing “great”

    • matthew garcia

Yeah your right nobody is doing good in Japan but 3ds and vita. Home consoles are deteriorating in Japan. What’s crazy is that if ps4 never launched in Japan it’s sales would still be great. It’s been reported on multiple sites that it crossed the 9 million mark already

      • palomino blue

It’s getting harder and harder to make the home console argument as handhelds become more powerful and support things like the virtual console. Nintendo definitely saw this in Japan when they decided to make the gamepad with off TV play. Unfortunately you still need to be close to the console for it to work so it’s not really an alternative to other handhelds.

        • matthew garcia

With how powerful smartphones are now should Nintendo make there new handheld system more powerful then they normally would?

        • Fiercedeitymelkor

Not really. With tegra k1 mobile will reach wii u levels but nowhere close to ps4 or xbox one yet.

      • bistricky

PS4 … “crossed the 9 million mark already”.

Did some research on this, because this was news to me. It appears this 9 million figure was said “once” in a recent interview by Microsoft VP Phil Harrison (when compared Xbox 1 as 5 million). The multiple sites appear to all source this interview.

Sony has confirmed two months ago selling over 7 million. Sony has not confirmed 9 million as a solid number …. nor has any other gaming sales data organizations.

It appears, this 9 million has been taken out-of-context.

Even, websites that have happily reported 9 million PS4 sales, have also concluded … “While we can’t say for certain that this information is accurate, we do know that Sony is still in the lead”. How is that for credible news sites.
        Cheers :D

        • Daniel Gonzalez

Never heard about it myself, but maybe those people know something that we don’t. We’ll find out in due time.

    • MerryBlind .

      LOL

    • FutureFox

Just like “they’re,” “there” and “their,” I think the internet needs to be reeled in on the use of the word “ironic” or “irony” in this case: I’ll be “that guy” for today. Here’s a guide:

Irony confuses. Let’s leave dramatic irony (you know, back when irony was tragic and the audience knew what was going to happen to Oedipus before he did) aside, as well as the debate over the supposed death of irony (after irony became comic, a subject that the Book Review’s former editor Chip
McGrath amusingly chronicled here). Instead, let’s talk about how we talk — and write.

Irony requires an opposing meaning between what’s said and what’s intended. Sounds simple, but it’s not. A paradox, something that seems contradictory but may be true, is not an irony. The Times stylebook, which, believe me, can be harsh, offers useful advice:

The loose “use of irony and ironically,to mean an incongruous turn of events, is trite. Not every coincidence, curiosity, oddity and paradox is an irony, even loosely. And where irony does exist, sophisticated writing counts on the reader to recognize it.”

Alanis Morissette’s song “Ironic” is equally useful. If it rains on your wedding day, that’s a coincidence, not an irony. If you win the lottery and drop dead before claiming the money, it’s good luck followed by bad luck. If you meet the man of your dreams and then meet his beautiful wife, it’s a bummer. But if a song called “Ironic” contains no irony, is that in itself ironic? Nope.

It may just be … dumb. It depends on the creator’s intent. So, as has been suggested, if Morissette purposely wrote a song called “Ironic” that contained no irony at all, is that ironic? We may be getting closer. Do you know irony when you see it?

      • Ducked

How irony of you to write all of that! :D

        • FutureFox

          Researched. Copy and paste.

          • Ducked

            Yes I’m joking with you.

          • FutureFox

How can you joke at a time like this? This is no laughing matter….. actually it is : D

          • Ducked

I thought you were angry at first when I read the beginning on your comment lol

      • Arthur Jarret

        Like this:

        • FutureFox

          Oh, the irony.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Should have been the name of the Xbox One. Missed opportunity for Microsoft.

      • Ducked

Anything over Xbox One would have been better.

        • 00EpicGamer00

They should of at least named it Xbox Three, if they so badly wanted to keep it at a one digit number. I personally, though, like the name Xbox 720. ;)

          • Ducked

            720 would make sense

        • Zanzama

It’s like Xbox One is 359 less Xbox than Xbox 360

    • Josiah Parsons

Unrelated, but does anyone else want to play Girls und Panzer: Master the Tankery?

    • LordiMcKill

Well, everyone and their mother knows how much Microsoft loves to make U-Turns!

    • Keith

Way to go quack. You finally successfully made somewhat of a joke….

  • Sdudyoy

I’m kinda surprised the PSvita is sailing so well now, competition is a good thing though, and the PSvita isn’t a bad console, there aren’t many games on it that I’m interested in though.

    • MerryBlind .

It’s a great device. Sony really nailed it with the Vita and PS4 in terms of hardware. However, for some reasons, the Vita never gained any traction and has kind of a lackluster game library. Meanwhile, the PS4 has tremendous momentum, even though it doesn’t have that good of a library either, yet.

  • InterTreble

Wii U is dead only for the haters. Reality is far different! ;)

    • Ducked

Wii U is dead. By next year Zelda and Super Smash Bros will be ported to the Xbox One.

      • matthew garcia

Wii u is more on life support

        • Rinslowe

          More like “last warning”…

        • D.M.T

How exactly is Wii U on life support? The games keep coming and the Wii U is outselling the PS4 in some regions (like Japan). Oh I get it now, people like you think it’s on life support just because 3rd party publishers aren’t putting their average at best games on Wii U.

          • matthew garcia

How about it’s only outselling ps4 only In Japan where home console sales are bad for everyone. Doesn’t matter what u think of 3rd party games. There are many different types of gamers and the more variety of games you have the better for that console. When it’s all Said and done ps4 will have a much bigger and diverse library of games. Whether it’s a better library of games is debatable

        • Keith

You apparently “Ducked” your mom too….your a disgusting troll

      • InterTreble
        • Ducked

You know I’m not serious lol

Treble doesn’t detect sarcasm too well.

          • Ducked

I don’t think anyone on here can read sarcasm too well.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Well I wouldn’t generalize, as there are plenty that can pick up on it. Of course, you do have the ones that either can’t read it, or take it the wrong way. Lol.

          • InterTreble
          • Daniel Gonzalez

Yeah, you got your personality down just fine. Good pick there. :P

          • InterTreble

You are always here spamming all the days, so if there is one who has no brain here, is only YOU! :)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Haha. Says the guy who spammed my comments early on. Might want to get your brain checked my friend. :P

          • InterTreble

“Treble doesn’t detect sarcasm too well.”

You started the member war, gonzy. It’s about time you yake your own responsibilities. If you cannot discuss with people in a civil way, it’s not my problem. Take care, and enjoy your life. You’re always too ungry and too sad! ;)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I think you mean take responsibility. You can’t make it. It’s obvious you don’t understand English too well, Trebby. Otherwise, by now, you would have noticed that you initiated the “member war” from the beginning. Me calling you out on it, was justified. So with that said, I don’t need to take any responsibility my friend, so the ball is in your court. I do enjoy my life, thank you. So that means I have no reason to be sad. Logic doesn’t play a part in your life I can tell. ;P

          • InterTreble

If you cannot recognize a typo, and speak about my English, well… this demonstrates I was perfectly right: you are completely idiot!!! :D If you are frustrated from your life, don’t go spamming the Internet all days. Go to a psychologist, it may helps! :)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

“Wii U is dead only for the haters. Reality is far different! ;)”

Says the one who initiated it, that’s pretty comical. They don’t ban people for making valid points. Sorry Trebby. I wouldn’t want to see you banned though, because there needs to be examples of the term, whackjob. Have a good day buddy.

          • InterTreble

You quoted the wrong post. You said a lot of wrong things. You were and you are wrong. Simply a disaster. Shut up now, because you are only making everything worse and worse… Since you like quotes:

“Treble doesn’t detect sarcasm too well.”

This is what YOU said. Don’t try to hide your responsibility, like a 3 yeras old child. This is member war. And you should be banned! ;)

What a shame, Mr. Wrong. Again. And again. ;)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Oh you mean when I said you don’t understand sarcasm? Nah, that was based on fact.

“Wii U is dead only for the haters. Reality is far different! ;)”

When you make comments like this, it only further backs up my claim. That and the 1001 comments just like it as I’m sure are easy to find. That’s what I call, a major disaster on your persona.

“What a shame, Mr. Wrong. Again. And again. ;)”

Yes, what a shame. You certainly are wrong often. That I can agree with you on. Though the real shame is, that you can’t see past your insane ramblings. ;P

          • InterTreble

Too much words, you are nervous, I can see. Not my problem. What a poor life you have. Never enjoying, always attacking people and showing your stupidity! :)

Gonzalez is the most logical person on Wii U Daily. He’s been a loyal Nintendo fan since the company started in 1898. In fact he worked for them when it started. Sadly he got laid off when he came up with the sex hotels. If you must know, he’s a vampire.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

You got me Ducked. I am undead. Finally, a logical argument. :D

          • Ducked

Oh close enough. I wasn’t alive when it started, unlike you. Lol

          • Rinslowe

“Gonzalez is the most logical person on Wii U Daily.”

You’re either one of Gonzales’ alternate accounts or you’re on drugs or both…

          • Ducked

How could I be one of his alternate accounts? Not even a possibility. You shouldn’t judge him about his vampire secrets.

          • Rinslowe

            Zombie secrets. Correction.

          • Ducked

            Whoops

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Never a good idea to defend me. You will be accused of being an alt. Seems to be a theme around here of late. ;P

          • Ducked

It does, doesn’t it? People just don’t have any humor on here.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

It certainly does. It’s easy to point the finger, but harder to admit one’s own wrong doings. Some live in the past, and not in the now. That’s a shame. As for humor, there’s plenty that do, but of course, you also have those who like to stir the pot into a different topic that wasn’t even necessary. ;P

          • Daniel Gonzalez

“You’re either one of Gonzalez’ alternate accounts or you’re on drugs or both…”

You’re either one of Jonathan’s alternate accounts, or your paranoia has become habit forming. Perhaps it’s time to put down that axe, eh? ;p

“Funny, I haven’t seen him at any of the AA meetings. All Vampires are
required by law now to attend a late night version of alcoholics
anonymous as it is supposed to help with integration into society…
Please do not mistake Zombies for Vampires. It makes me hungry.”

I’ve been alive for over 100 years. Attending AA meetings doesn’t apply to me. If I was a Zombie, I would have been nothing but bones long ago. Sorry to disappoint you. Despite not being at those AA meetings, I do have plenty of beer. Feel free to stop by.

          • Rinslowe

“You’re either one of Jonathan’s alternate accounts, or your paranoia has become habit forming. Perhaps it’s time to put down that axe, eh? ;p”
I’d say you need to take your own advice and learn to read sarcasm Gonzalez. Reading too much into it…
            Hmm hmm….

And yes you are more Zombie than Vampire… Haha.

      • Guest

lol, Nintendo would die before it gives someone Zelda.

      • Zanzama

        Wii U is dead.

3DS’s success will make it implode in itself, shifting its reality to a higher existence beyond the rach of mortals.

Virtual Boy will become the number 1 console worldwide.
Ouya will dominate on second place for all future years to come.

Vita sales will go up by 500% (approx. 500 more units).

EA will be elected best company of the year. Also they’ll decide to become a second party developer for Nintendo.

Capcom will be bought by an unknown indie developer in North Korea.

Pokemon Please Version and Pokemon Understand Version will revolutionize gaming as we know it.

Wiiner will become Nintendo’s new revolutionary console. Its quality of life features include a unique waste and urinary tract so you would no longer need to go the bathroom while playing. Diarrheas will bring a new sensation to the hardcore gaming market.
Also GTA Somalia will be a 3rd party exlusive.

    • Capt. Smoker

Tell ya what, this Wii U and Vita setup I got going on is world class, it’s just one good game followed by another, can’t ask for any more than that from “dead” consoles, Xenoblade Chronicles X will be the game of the generation, far above anything any other 3rd party developers will be able to offer us, only my opinion of course, sooner have a handful of quality games like that than 100+ a year I couldn’t care less about on other systems.

      • InterTreble

I have the idea about X, so you’re not alone, man! ;) Let’s enjoy the games, and leave the hater like Gonzales having everything but fun! ;)

  • Rinslowe

I’d say Wii U sales are closer to 10k than pre kart no’s. Obviously. That was, at the time sitting between 2 – 5k for months…

    • Daniel Carvalho

Nintendo needs one launch per month in order to keep sales above 15K in Japan. If they manage to get one title per month, I’m sure we won’t be seeing eventual falls like that.

Yeah, It’s still a fair way off pre Kart no’s though huh…
Hyrule Warriors in Japan should change the outlook for a while. Then they’ve got Bayonetta. Not sure about the last one there…
More interested in how Bayo 2 does in the States/ Europe and Oceania.

I get the feeling it’s going to do better in Japan than other regions. I expect the sales to at least be decent when combined. Agree to disagree there.

          • Rinslowe

Yeah. Well I’d say that I agree if talking about Japan. I think Hyrule Warriors will be the clear leader of the two in sales.
In the rest of the world, even though there is that Zelda aspect helping push HW along. I think it’ll be interesting to see which one does better out of the two. Probably HW, but Bayo 2 could surprise…
I’ll back Bayo 2 in the west, for the moment. But that’s just taking things lightly…

Monster Hunter 4 should show Nintendo that they NEED third-party support. Compare MH4 with the sales of MK7. Now, MK7 has been out for a lot longer than MH4 and MH4 has significantly more sales, just short of 1 Million. I feel like with the Wii U Nintendo aren’t even trying to get third party support anymore.

They have first party games, yes but they take far too long to be released and the second party games you could probably count on one hand. They made a mistake not buying Atlus and i hope they don’t make the same mistake with Capcom.

Nintendo aren’t going away, we all know that as they have a hell of a lot of money in the bank but each year, that money is going away and if change doesn’t happen then Nintendo will be worse off for it. Even if they need to spend a significant amount of money to own Capcom, they should just do it as it would make them so much more money.

Imagine Street Fighter on the Wii U. The Street Fighter community is absolutely massive and would push out a lot more consoles. Capcom have a very diverse games library and Nintendo would sweep this generation if they buy them.

Mega Man with Nintendo influence? Yes please.

If Mario Kart 7 is any indication(release in December of 2011), Mario Kart 8 has plenty of life left!

      Agreed

How is PS Vita “neck and neck” with 3DS? The 3DS versions on the market combined are outselling the PS Vita by almost 50%!

I think Wii U Daily might be referring to the number in the parenthesis. The 3DS XL (LL in Japan), is at 22,803. The PS Vita is at 22,192. So, if Wii U Daily is going off of that, then yeah. The 3DS and Vita are “neck and neck.” Hope this helps.

Quite gay….her I mean grey. I shouldn’t have said that. Now “Ducked”, “TheAnimal Flemming” & “Matthew Garcia” are drooling over you. Sorry bud :-S

If you are trying to make a joke, you failed to make me laugh. If you are trying to make a valid point about the article or the comment I posted, you make no sense. If however you are trying to waste my time, I can’t help but feel you are a great success.

I wouldn’t be concerned about the Vita being neck and neck 3DS. It isn’t. For one, matching 3DS sales, even if it was every week from now on just means the 3DS keeps its lead for the rest of the cycle. I’ve lost track of the numbers, but I believe the 3DS is about 30 million units in front.
More importantly, the 3DS will be up for replacement soon, whereas Sony will have to eke out the Vita for far longer. Ultimately the Vita won’t match the total sales of the PSP, let alone the 3DS.
