Mario Kart 8 sold over 500k in Japan

mariokart8wallpaper

Official Media Create numbers for Japan will be in tomorrow, but according to industry analyst David Gibson, Famitsu is reporting that Mario Kart 8 moved 512,467 units in Japan for the month of June. That’s a nice number that will likely increase over the long-tail as more people pick up a Wii U.

We won’t have numbers for North America until the end of this month, but considering that Nintendo has stated that Mario Kart 8 has already sold 2 million units worldwide, it’s not hard to see that Mario Kart 8 is on its way to being a critical and commercial success. Hopefully Nintendo can continue this momentum with the release of Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

  • Mr Ninty

mario kart 8 will do fine and if it doesn’t then they can do a remake for the next console like almost every game on the ps4 and x1 at the moment :p

    • MerryBlind .

Well it IS doing fine right now.

      • Mr Ninty

i know and im glad to see it, everybody should play the game once. most fun i had in years.

  • WiiUisgaming
    • Yoshifan3

no its not happening, get over it.

      • Ducked

How is getting more third party support bad?

        • Yoshifan3

its not happening because the game is 2 months away, they would have to delay the game a long time to even get a good wii u version going. if they havent mentioned anything by now, its not happening. and it just aint worth the hassle to do it in bungies eyes. they obviously know something we dont.

          • David Trail

It would work on Wii U though. Devs are pathetic.

          • KartSmash

It would but they’ll either say it isn’t powerful enough or doesn’t have a big enough install base

          • TehEngineer

Unless Activision pulls another COD: Ghosts, and announces Destiny Wii U a week before release.

    • FIreproof_actual

Wii U would crap a brick trying to run that game…

      • MerryBlind .

The Wii U is more than capable of running that game what are you talking about. The PS3 and 360 can, so with the Wii U being more powerful than either two, it obviously could run Destiny.

        Not gonna happen though.

        • Yoshifan3

the 360 and ps3 versions will probably have really long load times, if you seen the alpha gameplay, its almost the size of skyrim map, and thats just one part of an area.

          • MerryBlind .

Maybe. I don’t know. I’m not too impressed with what I’ve seen of the game so far, so I’m not too interested in it. Besides, I’ll probably only play it if it comes to PC. I don’t really feel like playing the ‘lesser’ version on my PS3, and I’m not getting a PS4 or an X1 any time soon, or ever if I can resist lol.

          • Yoshifan3

im not to interested in it either if that makes sense. call me crazy, but im more excited for nintendo this year after E3, to say i was impressed with nintendo would be a massive understatement. Hyrule warriors, bayo 2, it makes me glad i have a wii u. it makes me feel good i didnt waste my money on it.

          • Rich Garriques

really? , that game doesnt impress me at all, iv seen a lot of content and it just looks like another fps rehashed with halo suits and cod and halo mixed gameplay in a skyrim world , boring already.

          • Yoshifan3

im not interested in it either. i never dissed the wii u now in my post, in fact if you look down im pretty pumped with my wii u right now. because they showed games games games, which is all i wanted from nintendo. they did it, so now im a happy camper with nintendo.

          • Rinslowe

It’ll run just fine on the older hardware. It could have run just fine on Wii U as well.
I doubt it’ll ever make it though. And if it ever did, after so much arm pulling. The game would end up being unnecessarily pared back missing features and everything else that goes with a rushed Wii U port these days.
            I’d rather it didn’t.
People should just get it for another platform or suck it up.

          • Yoshifan3

i have no doubts the wii u could run this. its already been proven with zelda U. but people can seem to grasp that its not coming, if it did like you said it would be missing features, and then people would still complain lol.

      • matthew garcia

It would not be able to play it at ps4 level but it will play ps3 level. It should actually play somewhere in the middle but developers would never take the time to optimize it that way. They would consider it a waste of time

      • Rich Garriques

dude shut up you know nothing about tech , wii u is more then capable of running that game. in fact it can run any game. every engine is scalable and if not its a crappy engine to begin with.

      • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

The 7 year old tech aka PS3 and 360 which is getting the game will explode trying to run it, Wii U has more power then you think. It would run the game fine, might have smaller render distances but other then that it wouldn’t be that much of a difference if optimized on the Wii U.

    • MerryBlind .

LOL forget it, not gonna happen. Sorry bro.

    • Will.F. Martinez

Lol as much as I like Nintendo. I know that’s not happening

    • http://www.gengame.net/ Guesty Pooh!

Destiny is not destined for Wii U.

      • MerryBlind .

        I like your style.

      • Joecoo1

Hard Truth man, but Nintendo doesn’t care what we say.

    • Jason

More intrested in Kingdom Hearts 3.

      • MerryBlind .

Now THAT would be much more fitting to a Nintendo console. I’m sure it would actually sell great.

      • 00EpicGamer00

I never understood how Square Unix thought it was a good idea to put Kingdom Hearts 3 on the Xbox One. I’d completely understand if it was JUST on the PS4. But the Xbox One too? For starters, Xbox never got a single KH game. While, Nintendo got a couple. Not for home console but for GBA, DS, and 3DS. Just with this “evidence” alone, the Wii U should have received KH 3 over Xbox One.

    • Joecoo1

It won’t happen but it can run the game no doubt about it. I just posted a very true remark it’s the latest post please read it.

    • Joecoo1

It can run the game I really wish we can play it

      • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Yet Xbox One has a smaller install base then Wii U. Your logic has a hole in it.

    • Johny

jesus.. its not coming to wii u.

    • Joecoo1

Yo, Ashley King can you make an article that can talk about Destiny on Wii U, so we can get more of an appropriate article to debate on. Not only that I WANT DESTINY ON WII U! We need this publicity!

      • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

There was posts like that before online in places.

    • Sdudyoy

Those Petitions mean nothing, even if they see them it doesn’t always mean they can do anything about it, or even want to do anything about it.

    • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

If it comes to PC, it will come to Wii U. Even though a lot of people want it on Wii U, myself included cause I’m forced to pay $570 to play Destiny (Buying a PS4 + Destiny + PS+ for a Year.) But it wont come unfortunately which is odd since Bungie did those Nintendo teases before and Activision says they want to support Wii U the best they can…

      • Wilks

If it comes to PC, it will come to WiiU? Then where’s GTA 5 U? Oh.

        • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Rockstar and Bungie are 2 very different companies…Bungie unlike Rockstar LIKES NINTENDO. And are fans of Nintendo and play Nintendo. And Activision unlike Rockstar wants to support the Wii U as best as they can. That being said Destiny is their only game not on Wii U. But Activision has a history of putting their stuff on EVERYTHING like COD for example. Which is on Wii U. So if Destiny comes to PC, you honestly think it would get put on EVERYTHING but Wii U? lol no.

          • Wilks

Yes, because Activision doesn’t care for Wii U other than for Call of duty.

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Skylanders….?There was something else but I forget what.

      • greengecko007

        “I’m forced to pay $570 to play Destiny (Buying a PS4 + Destiny + PS+ for a Year.)”

Why is that? A PS4 is $400, the standard edition of Destiny is $60, and PS+ is $50 a year, which is $510, unless you live in a different territory with different pricing. They’ve also announced the Destiny PS4 bundle for $450 that comes with a month of PS+.

        • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

PS4 here in Canada went up $50 so it’s $450…PS4 games are $70 in Canada now, have been since the new year. Xbox One games are also $70 and Wii U games are $65. And I am getting the White Destiny PS4 Bundle. Which comes to $573 or something with me buying a 1 year PS+ card.

          • greengecko007

Is that MSRP or just retailers hiking up prices like they do in the UK? Either way that seems completely unfair.

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

It’s cause the Canadian dollar is down a bit and since the American dollar is higher everything got a bit pricier here. Sad thing is when the Canadian Dollar goes back up, the prices wont go back down. And yeah its unfair.

    • http://www.twitch.tv/insanityraptor/profile InsanityRaptor

I hate to say even if they were to release on Wii U they wouldn’t be able to optimize for the Wii U to make it look better than the last-gen ports…and the fact that it’s way too late.

    • Clel

What the hell, no. Let people have their exclusives–we have ours, they can have their own. Buy the console if you want it that badly, sheesh

      • YogiGRB

but, but ….. it is also on xbox …. ( just saying it is not exclusive to one brand of console, it a multi platform)

  • FutureFox

Vgchartz to reflects the Japanese numbers.

    • FutureFox

About a 6% increase from what vgchartz shows for Japanese sales. Can expect roughly the same across the board.

  • Nintendoro

Nintendo’s not meant to get top 3rd party games I’m afraid, so Destiny is not gonna happen. But that’s 3rd parties problem if they do not work on Wii U.

  • Nathan C.

Can’t wait to see what the amiibo will do in MK8.

  • Joecoo1

WII U can play destiny there is no doubt about it. It’s just that the Wii U doesn’t have a big enough install base. That isn’t even attractive to Bungie or Activison. So there is no reasonable investment for them on the Wii U. So all we can do is watch Playstation and Xbox play the Beta and just never experience the Game ourselves. Nintendo doesn’t even care of what we say, we can ramble on all we want but this will never happen. And they won’t ever care. It’s not like Nintendo of America is going to join our discussion and prove me wrong.

    • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Xbox One has a smaller install base then Wii U. Flawed logic.

      • matthew garcia

It is smaller but Xbox one fans will purchase the game at a higher then Wii u fans. So of course they will go with Xbox over Wii u no matter what size the install base

        • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

But if there is overall less Xbox One owners thats less sales or very small sales anyway. Point is ignoring the Wii U cause it has less fanbase then PS4 but more then Xbox One makes no sense.

          • matthew garcia

When has any 3rd party 1st person shooter game ever sold good on Nintendo. Don’t matter install base it will sell well on Xbox and poor on Wii u.

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

When was the last time there was a 3rd part 1st person shooter on a Nintendo console not including COD? Never, doesn’t sell on Nintendo consoles cause devs dont show their support for it on that console. A dev cant complain about getting low sales when they themselves dont do a damn thing to assist it.

          • matthew garcia

That excuse goes back years for Nintendo. Always blame others. Nintendo should have made better relations way back and now there at a all time worse with 3rd party. Either way sales are sales and 3rd party sales like shit on Nintendo. Destiny would sale Like shit on Wii u. Nothing has proven otherwise, not just 1st person shooters but all genres of 3rd party games

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

But what your ignoring is the money they make on Destiny on the PS4 version alone would cover the Wii U version. So what if not much profit was made from the Wii U version? They would get all the money they need from the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One version. If money is all you care about then get the fuck out of this industry. Those types of flee infested humans need to be murdered as quickly as possible to make the world a better place. Money doesn’t make the world go around, a team effort does.

          • Jonathan Robitaille

Nintendo plays the long game, 3rd parties a short one. 3rd parties just aren’t willing to cultivate a fanbase…something that takes multiple games over multiple consoles to do. ZombiU is the perfect example. When all is said and done that should approach 1 million sold. That is a great number for that type of game on a Nintendo console. That’s 1 million fans right there. If Ubi was to come out with a sequel that is even more polished I am betting they could duplicate those sales if not better..and so on and so forth. They did a British theme with the first, they could do a similar AC type thing but instead of changing eras, they change cities. Maybe make a multi player.

But Ubi doesn’t play the long game. If they did they’d have kept Rayman Legends exclusive. And that..might have led to eventually it becoming a Nintendo staple. Maybe a Smash character? Sadly they are trying to convince people that they lost money on ZombiU so it doesn’t warrant a sequel. How in God’s name did they lose money on a game that sold 700k? I call B.S. just like all the crap that comes out of their mouth now.

          • MerryBlind .

Yeah Ubisoft definitely don’t play the long game, otherwise they would know better than to release one AC game a year, flawed every single time. I love them all, but they’re still all flawed and could all have been so much better.

          • Jonathan Robitaille

I picked up AC4 for $15 for the Wii U. My buddy who played it on PC raves about it. I had it in for like 10 minutes and couldn’t believe how bad it looks on the Wii U. Like a direct port from PS360 bad…but a touch better simply because the Wii U is more powerful, not that they put any effort into it. Did you play the Wii U or a different version? If Wii U, did the graphics and framerate bother you? Did you power through? Or play on a different machine? I am trying to sell it I thought it was so bad

          • MerryBlind .

I played it on PC, so I can’t speak of the Wii U version, sorry. Though I did read that it was very similar to the 360/PS3 versions. Great game, but like I said, could have been better with more polish.

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

It was a lie that they lost money on ZombiU. If you do the math they made a profit in the end lol.

          • Jonathan Robitaille

right? they made that claim like 4 months in when the Wii U had barely any games and was struggling. They had such short sightedness and lack of confidence in their product they just assumed it wouldn’t sell anymore. It’s actually done very well for 3rd party, might even be the highest. I still haven’t beaten it. Almost done with DKTF and then I will finish.

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Never beaten it either, after twice having game breaking glitches which made me unable to progress in the game I gave up.

        • MerryBlind .

          Exactly.

    • MerryBlind .

I think it has more to do with the audience. Destiny wouldn’t sell very well on a Nintendo console even if it was to be a masterpiece, whereas it will sell like hotcakes on Xbox even it ends up being a total turd.

What the hell does this have to with mario kart you people are starting make me

Some of us are just sick with no third party games. Blame Nintendo,EA,Bungie, Bethseda, we just want a cool third party.

Bethesda can keep their buggy games off Nintendo platforms. EA why on earth would you want their FIFA and shit on the Wii U? Bungie likes Nintendo, its up to Activision what consoles they put their games on.

With every passing day …. the Wii U is becoming more appealing to more people.

The news has become increasingly positive, on a regular basis, for the Wii U.

500k for Mario Kart 8 in Japan is very good news.

Even very influential websites like “Kotaku”, today, have made a major update article (very cool read) and now state the Wii U is a must-buy.

    Check it out: http://kotaku.com/wii-u-review-update-20-months-later-1601718713

    • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Nintendo’s E3 where the focus was 100% on the core fans is the reason the Wii U is looking more appealing. If Nintendo did that since the Wii U launched then it would have been doing well since day 1.

      • David Trail

I am a core fan and I believe Nintendo have never abandoned the core fans. The core fans wouldn’t have left. I have been with them since the N64.

        • KartSmash

I have been with them since NES and they most certainly abandoned us on the wii. I still stuck it out, but they definitely catered to the casuals rather than their core fans.

          • matthew garcia

I agree. I hated motion gaming. I know some others will disagree

          • Sdudyoy

Motion controls, they aren’t gaming in my opinion, It’s why I wasn’t interested in the Wii when it came out, they are a gimmick, there are still good games on the Wii, but I feel as they where hindered by motion controls.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Agree. And they tried to go down that road again with the Wii U. But I hope they now understand where to make their bets in the future.

          • Jonathan Robitaille

how so? I think people equate the sheer volume of shovelware as somehow Nintendo’s fault. Maybe they could have had tighter controls over what eventually found its way on the Wii but as far as supporting a console with 1st party games the Wii might actually be Nintendo’s best effort to date (Wii U will pass it eventually). You had two Zelda’s, DK, two Metroids, MarioKart, Animal X, two Kirby’s, Pikmin, several new IPs like Wii Sports/Resort/Party/Fit/Ski, two 3D Mario games, 2d Mario, Wario and lots of 2nd party efforts as well.

So how did they cater to casuals? Maybe you are referring to their choice to go with motion controls and not even trying to keep up technically. But I use software as a barometer for how they support their core fans and I don’t think Nintendo themselves made that many casual games and they get a bad wrap because that’s 80% what 3rd party provided

          • palomino blue

I waited 20 hours in line to buy a Wii the first day. I have to say I did feel somewhat abandoned and gave up on the system myself after a couple years. I never sold it and went back about a year before the Wii U came out and picked up a lot of great games I hadn’t realized were released. The difference with the Wii U for me is, even with a slow trickle of games, I’m always excited about what’s coming out. everything about the system works and feels better for me than the Wii did. As long as they can keep bringing out several solid titles a year I don’t see myself giving up on the Wii U until Nintendo is ready to move on.

          • bistricky

Well said ….. I couldn’t have said it better myself ,,,, exactly the same for me. The Wii U is far better then the Wii any day (and the potential that the Wii U offers, has made it so).

        • Flopperop

Me too, my fellow Nintendo core fan. As far as the home consoles go, the N64 days were great, the GameCube days were okay, the Wii days were of course some of the best that Nintendo as a company has ever had, and I’m very excited to see more and more positive news about the Wii U. The 3DS didn’t flop in the end, and I don’t think that the Wii U will either.

Also, just to clarify, I’ve spent a significant amount of time with a SNES and an NES, but I never owned them. I would always go over to my buddy’s house to play on his with him. There was also that time that I rented a SNES from Blockbuster when that was still a thing… It seems like, through it all, Nintendo still knows how to make games fun at their very core, without the need for the very latest graphics or what have you, although that does turn some people off. I’m so glad to have been with team Nintendo since about 1996.

        • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Oh yeah cause focusing the past 2 E3′s on the 3DS instead of the Wii U, and tearing off their core fans testicles with bullshit on the Miiverse, and not giving us Party Chat, and giving us game droughts and excuses and Nintendo going after the casual kids was so all for us. E3 was my last straw for Nintendo. I have had a Wii U since day 1, been a Nintendo fan since the damn NES, but they had killed EVERY SINGLE BIT of support I had for them. Luckily Nintendo was forced to open the flood gates at E3 and Starfox alone gained back 50% of my support for them. Course the other 50% will only come back when Party Chat is added and the Miiverse is either removed or fixed. Miyamoto himself had said “Nintendo failed to get kids to get their parents to buy the Wii U.” Nintendo SAID they were going for the core, when in reality the core were given 1 random game ever 4-5 months while they put all their effort on trying to get the casual kids to buy the Wii U .Thank god they woke the fuck up finally.

          • Magnus Eriksson

Brother! I know how you feel! I can relate 100% to this.

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Thats surprising since you and I normally don’t get along.

          • LordiMcKill

If they can give us video chat from day one but have yet to give us party chat, something must be seriously wrong. I mean even a 1 to 1 chat feature would do me nicely. I just hope that was what Miyamoto was talking about when he said they’d already started working on the next system update.

          • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

The thing is, I believe it was supposed to come sooner, cause Iwata said before the Wii U launched that voice chat would come at some point, but then that 3DS Swapnote bullshit happened so I think they chose to not do it to “protect the kids”. But Nintendo seems to be caring about their core again so if thats the case they might bring it out now.

        • URFTBOUND4LIFE .

Well I did left Nintendo during that gen for Sony(got swept away by the PS1) so I never owned an N64. I came back during the GCN after playing Melee and watching the Wind Waker demo in a Circuit City once.

I didn’t get to play N64 games until VC came out for the Wii.

Shame that the other games like Banjo Kazooie ,Jet force Gemini,Mystical Ninja Conker are not on the VC. Always wanted to play those

      • bistricky

Nintendo has definitely had to eat a big slice of ‘humble pie’ these past 20 months (since its release of the Wii U). I can just imagine the huge arguments in the war room at Nintendo. IMO, they missed up big time …. yet, it is how they have responded …. almost reinventing their 8th generation console to become a console player, again, in the gaming market.

Nintendo had a choice to change …. and change means a lot of work without knowing if a reward would be given …. but we are now daily witnessing a progressive thought-out change. And by changing gears, even 20 months into the Wii U’s life, it is significant that they actually have …. bringing their core fans back into the fold and making it possible for non Wii U gamers, to give the Wii U a 2nd look (or finally a 1st look).

As the Wii U enters its 2nd anniversary, it will be interesting to see if the Wii U becomes a must-have holiday season gift …. and if Nintendo continues to respond positively to change.
        Cheers :D

Starfox alone will bring back alot of core fans, I’ve been wanting Starfox for 9 long years. (2nd favorite franchise) lol

      Thanks for the link, bro.

  • William Cole

I’m extremely happy for Nintendo. The constant underdog. I hope with this and Smash they leave a strong presence for Wii U.

Screw Smash Bros, its all about Captain Toad Treasure Tracker!!!

      • William Cole

Surprisingly that game looks like it has the potential to be a hit. If only they’d put it on iphones or something.

        • Decker Shado

Oh no no no… I’d hate to try and do the precision movements in that game with a “virtual” joystick. >_<

        • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Fuck off with smartphone junk lol. Toad is one of the best game characters EVER. It’s about time he gets his own game, fuck Halo 5, fuck Uncharted 4, fuck Smash Bros, Captain Toad GAME OF THE YEAR 2014!!! The game is more then a silly mini game, game.

          • CommanderBlue

Yes it is time for Captain Toad to shine.

  • Rinslowe

Yup. We should give credit where it’s due. Mario Kart 8 might not have everybody going crazy about every mode. But overall, everyone who’s owned it and played it for any decent length of time. Knows that it’s an absolute stunner. Highly polished and quite easy on the eye.
Lets hope Smash does the same or even better, later this year.

    • Clel

If they market it properly, Smash is gonna be SOOOO BIIIIG. There’s an insane amount of hype for it, including among ‘hardcore gamers’. Pretty much any Xbox/Playstation owner really wants to play the new smash lol

I think Lemmy is actually a lesbian. Rainbow mohawk and less than masculine cheers and groans, plus it makes since to put another female koopaling so Wendy is not ‘the only girl koopa’

    • Zanzama

      Nah… He’s just fabulous

  • InterTreble

The haters of this site used to say: “Wii U is a fail. Mario Kart 8 won’t help.” Then they switched to a warmer: “Ok it sold. But it will be a flash in the pan.” Spot the difference: none! They are always wrong, always. We’ve always told them they were annoying in their arrogance, when they insulted and called us “fanboys”. I will never stop saying that being a Nintendo hater, a Sony hater or a Microsoft hater is most stupid thing to do with videogames. If they cannot understand this basic principle…

Glad to hear it I hope it’s a similar story for NA/EU. And I’d say it’s already a critical and commercial success tbh ;)
