Check out this speed stage from Sonic Boom’s SDCC demo [VIDEO]

One of the primary concerns of long-time fans of the Sonic franchise is that the upcoming Wii U exclusive game Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric will not have the fast-paced levels that fans are used to when it comes to Sonic games. All the gameplay we’ve seen so far has been less than speedy, so this off-screen demo taken at San Diego Comic-Con shows that there will be fast levels with Sonic and pals racing around at the speed of sound.

The demo is relatively short and we have no idea how many similar levels are included in the game, but this should give fans a reason to breathe easy as it includes the classic Gotta Go Fast gameplay that so many of you love.

I hope this doesn’t turn out to be like Sonic Unleashed where the day, speed levels were 100x more fun than the brawling night levels and also 100x less frequent. However, I feel like the slower brawling levels in this game will be more enjoyable than Unleashed’s so we shall wait and see.

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

I think Sega learned a lot from Unleashed and how much people hated it. I doubt they’re keen to repeat that mistake any time soon.

      • mojack411

Yeah that’s what I would like to think too. We also don’t know too terribly much about the game yet so looking forward on that front.

  • palomino blue

I hope the characters learn to shut up for a few minutes in the full game. That could get old real fast.

    • Johnsonexp

You would most likely be able to turn off their in-game dialogue without muting cuteness.

    • Nathan C.

What’s wrong with the dialogue? If anything, it adds spirit to what seems to be a pretty boring Sonic game.

      • Comments

The problem is the lack of interaction between the characters, they don’t feel related to each other as they should. For example, Sonic eventually says: “Can’t slow down!”, but nobody else seems to have something to say related to that and the such line just ends up being random. It feels very awkward and, consequently, annoying as it looks like Sonic will say things like that in specific moments, like going throught a loop or something.

This problem was present in Sonic Heroes (“There they are!” “Eggman’s robots!”) but, at least, the characters had their own conversation about what was going on or the environment around them. Personally, I didn’t like very much either but it felt more genuine.

    • Trozay

But this is how almost all sonic games are like nowadays.

  • http://ejercitogeek.net/ Mercurio2054

it looks more fun than the last Sonic.

  • Petri

Was I just redirected to an ad?
I hope that I clicked something accidentally, because I wont take automatic ad redirections from sites that has no boobs on it.

    • palomino blue

Have you read some of the comments on the site? There are plenty of boobs ;)

  • http://people.ign.com/pdxmojo81 pdxmojo81

Too much jibber jabber. Looks alright but I personly don’t like hearing sonic (and friends) gloat about his speed and the amount of rings he can collect while trying to play the game. Just my 2 cents.

  • CEObrainz

Well classic sonic was a platformer…..so you know……, but Generations did it right with the perfect balance between the two. I do hope they talk less in the final game, as it seems like I’d get annoyed really quick at the quick jabs and remarks.

  • ActivesiN

so much talking….gdamn their voices are annoying

    • messiasliveofficial

      True

  • Johnsonexp

  • Comments

Meh.. Besides the boring stage, the voice acting is pretty lacking in the interaction departament.

  • messiasliveofficial

I just have the feeling that Sega will fail again :-(

  • uPadWatcher

This is gonna be better than Sonic Lost World!

    • 504HotBoy

      I totally agree!

    • steveb944

That’s really not hard to do IMO.

  • Donaald

Hopefully they fixed the framerate and whip issues the E3 demo had.

    • uPadWatcher

Let’s hope so, Don. It’s either that, or the player sucks at that game.

  • Phoenix Maybe

The game looks alright, I’d just wish they added a more to the stage than a brick road and some bounce pads. Also, we get it Sonic, we can’t slow you down.

    • thedeciderU

he’s slow in this video. couldn’t they at least get that right? at least, from watching, it feels slow and like you can’t control any of it.

      • Shin Ryoma

doesn’t look slow to me still the same speed as in colors

  • thedeciderU

first of all, that wasn’t the sonic speed i remember from the 1990s – nowhere near the speed. second, i know it’s marketed to kids now, which is sad since sonic was the manifestation of the cool older kid with attitude in 1, 2, 3, but they need to really shut them the hell up. their voices are terrible and that’s one of the reasons i don’t buy sonic games anymore. the game, from what i’ve seen, seems really generic (at least for a sonic game).

    • http://Website.com/ Shane Michaels

It looks OK to me. I did prefer the older voices. They don’t sound nearly as good as they used to. You should try Generations. It was really good, and they barely talked in that one.

      • thedeciderU

        thanks i might try it!

        • Cubester_64

If you try to get it on PC, make sure you have a pretty good processor if you want Sonic’s trademark speed. XBOX 360 or PS3 versions seem to run fine, and Sonic is guaranteed fast.

          • thedeciderU

thanks i looked in some forums and it looks like 360 version over ps3 due to frame rate stuff, so i’m going to try to hunt it down as cheap as i can. thanks again!

  • Paulo

This looks nice. Whoever, they will never make a good sonic game like old days =(

This stage looks like “Sonic Rush” for IOs and Android lol… Sonic Adventure 1 (2 also) were the last good sonic games. Not even the music gets near of what it was

  • disqus_QNIAqtNpHo

looks awesome sonic moves like a ninja but his walking is awkward

  • A – Kuma

I’m on the fence on the new sonic voice. It’s kinda cool bt at the same time sonds kinda old. no i’m not misspelling on prpose, that letter that’s missing in all those words is broken. >.> and it’s annoying.

  • steveb944

Lame. Looks like you’re playing Temple Run.

  • Josiah Parsons

I never liked how chatty the characters are in sonic games. Sonic + All Stars Racing Transformed had the same problem.

  • uPadWatcher

According to Sonic’s website– sonicthehedgehog.com , Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is the first Wii U game powered by CRYENGINE… instead of CryEngine 3.

  • Spaniard0069

Why all the stupid one liners? They even started to repeat towards the end. My interest has faded and all it took was this one video.

  • Rinslowe

    Hmmm….
Still not really that impressed with this one.

  • Joss Lynes

    built with cryengine3

  • David John Gifford

After watching this I can now comfirm that I wont be buying this game looks like rubbish just like lost world was

  • Nathan C.

cobanermani456–a Youtuber that does playthroughs on many Sonic games– stated that these sections play like Sonic Dash. Not too encouraging. =(

I don’t quite get why everyone’s complaining about the dialogue. If you don’t like it, mute your TV. It’s that simple.

    • FutureFox

No its not that simple. Most times players only want to mute the player/team character(s) not all characters including NPCs. No such option has ever existed in video games to date and not likely to be introduced anytime soon.

  • URFTBOUND4LIFE .

I’m trying to get excited for this game, but the more I see the less I want it.
The dialogue between the characters in the speed sections are only there to annoy because it’s just pointless banter between characters on an continuous loop.
The jerky camera ain’t helping it much either.
I get the feeling(knowing SEGA) all the bugs and glitches wont be addressed until way after release if not at all.

    • Cubester_64

      Agreed 100.001%

  • H3adHunt3r

Sonic Boom may not be perfect nor like the other Sonic games, but I have faith that this will be the best rated Sonic game since Sonic Adventure.

  • Falcoxcalibur

Well, there seems to be no hope for Sonic. This game looks bad. I mean, everybody seems to run as fast as Sonic… why??? They won’t shut up while running, and… well, it just looks boring. Looks like Sonic Lost World will still be the better game, and that’s not saying much.

  • Falcoxcalibur

Sonic was supposed to be the fastest thing ever, but now even Amy runs at the same speed. LAME.

  • Kevin James McAllister

Sonic’s speed moments look awful in this demo. It really looked more like a quicktime event where you just move your character to the side to try and not hit stuff. No actual challenge, just fast-moving easy gameplay. Looks super boring.

  • http://macromanjr.blogspot.com/ Brian Lockett

I just find 3D Sonic games as generally annoying. Sonic Adventure 1 & 3 were pretty much the only one I enjoyed. I wish they’d just make 2D Sonic games, only with tons of levels, new feature additions to the stage designs, a level editor, and an online co-op mode. And no cheesy voice-acting.

  • Epicstuf

I wish Sega can go back to the old roots. Well, time to boot up the old Sega Genesis and Dreamcast.

  • Young Lav

great…. another sonic game that sucks flaming chode. thanks, sega.

  • Dylan Groot

Sheesh, they just dont know what to do with the little guy do they. Wake up call to SEGA, nobody wants this shit! They have to really look at the core gameplay an make a huge change there. I thought they were gonna pull it off in the last Sonic game, looked a bit more like mario galaxy, but they fucked up again. Maybe just call it quits, Sonic has allways been an overrated game.
