Wii U Daily receives face lift, plus a newly updated Android app

wii-u-daily

Over the past few weeks the team at Wii U Daily has been working hard to bring you the newly updated site layout. It’s quite different from the layout that we’ve used since 2010, which is considered ancient in internet time. The biggest improvement for the new layout is that the site is now responsive, meaning it will conform to any device you happen to access the site on, including the Wii U browser.

Check it out and let us know what you think about the new design. The early launch included a bug for mobile users that should now be fixed, but if you experience any other bugs, please be sure and leave a comment letting us know what exactly you experienced. Even including a screenshot in your comment could help identify any problems as we work them out.

Aside from a new look for the site, the Wii U Daily Android app also received an update, including several behind the scenes features to make the user experience that much more enjoyable. Here’s a short changelog:

  • Added new UI effects and tweaks
  • Replaced DataDroid (deprecated) with Retrofit
  • Updated about and open source licenses
  • Improved speed of endless listView
  • Improved comment layout stability and speed
  • Fixed tablet layout for portrait mode
  • Fixed Disqus token bug, now will warn of expiring token
  • Fixed notification showing with app in foreground
  • Fixed inline YouTube url bug
  • Fixed all other reported bugs

If you’re experiencing any problems with the Wii U Daily Android app, please be sure and let us know in the comments.

I love the new layout, I didn’t expect a update, but It’s a present surprise, the only thing I would change is the “Recommended for you” at the bottom right corner, pop ups annoy me, and I’ve read almost everything it’s suggested for me, but other than that It’s better, and I like not having to go to separate pages between the 3DS and Wii U news.

    • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Sdudyoy we appreciate the honest feedback! I understand your concerns about the ‘Recommend for you’ prompt and will see what I can do. We must be willing to test new features in order to provide the best user experience possible to ALL users, so please bare with us as we find the optimal balance.

      • matthew garcia

Thanks for listening to the users that’s cool of y’all

        • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Users come first! Even if that means working on code ’till 4am the night before the launch… Let us know if you run into any other issues and I’ll be sure to do what I can do patch it up.

  • Vivek Summer

I don’t get why this is the “Modern Look” for most updated websites now. It’s really plain and bland and everything is a rectangle!. It reminds me too much of windows 8.

    • matthew garcia

I like the new set up looks a lot better on my phone screen now

      • Vivek Summer

I know a lot of people do too. I just find it boring.

        • matthew garcia

It does look empty but more streamlined.

        • JBeauregard

the home page is boring. so much dead space

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Yeah. My thoughts exactly as well. It needs something there.

          • Roaming Pear

            agreed.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

Still needs some work, but definitely like the new look.

    • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Unfortunately design is more subjective than objective, and while we can do our best to make sure every device used to browse our site likes the code, its hard to satisfy everyones different tastes. I appreciate your honest feedback, thanks Vivek!

      • Daniel Carvalho

I just wish the site would have a black or more neutral background color. Makes it easier on the eyes, since a white/more bright color distracts and tires the eye.

    • Moreck

I agree! I don’t know why desktop sites are now being formatted for low-end mobile devices. This particular format might work for really small screens but that’s it.

  • JB

Nice little face-lift. I love it! Though it’s missing who authored the articles underneath the headline. Now how are we supposed to tell who writes what?… Well except those weekend articles that is. We all know who writes those ;-)

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Yeah, the author byline seems to be left out on the smaller mobile version of the site, but the desktop version still shows the author.

    • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Everything is written by me now. >:D

      • JB

I knew you didn’t leave us! Lol

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

          I’m somewhere

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Please do. :P

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Heh. If I had time and money :P

          • Daniel Gonzalez

You’ll get there with perseverance. :P

          • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

and people with more money :D

      • Rinslowe

        He lives.

        • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

          But does he breathe?

  • Chris Aita

The mobile browser version for iPhone continuously cuts off text on the right side.

    • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Thanks Chris, what version iPhone do you have? Looking into it now!

      • Chris Aita

        iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.2

        • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Got it. Was able to duplicate the bug and should have a fix ready in a little bit. Thanks Chris

          • Chris Aita

No problem, and thank you for making the page better for iOS users.

          • JB

It’s cutting off text on the right side for me as well. Paticularly on the bulletpoints. I’m on a Galaxy S 5 Android 4.4.2

  • http://obaforums.wordpress.com DragonSilths

Liked it better before personally. The web version seems like a mobile version.

    • KamikazeLW

I second that. I liked it better before.

    • Vazaha

      Change scares me. :'(

  • bistricky

Looking good …. BUT attachments don’t seem to be attaching and posting.

    • bistricky

I will try to attach a picture again.

      • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Let me know if you run into any issues.

        • bistricky

Well as you see, it worked the 2nd time …. but it put two pictures on when I had deleted one and then put in another (before posting).
I will try to add a picture again …

  • Googs

The website looks really narrow on my 1080p screen and it’s not because I’m using adblocker: http://i.imgur.com/OBeO1H5.png

    • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Thank you for the screenshot Googs. What browser / version are you using? I imagine if you were to clear your browsers cache it should fix the problem, but let me know if it doesn’t.

      • Googs

Ah, clearing cache has fixed it, I hadn’t yet thought of doing that, now that it’s fixed, I can say that it looks really nice, great work :D!

        • rp17

Same problem sometimes it’s messed up sometimes it’s not. (Also using Google Chrome.)

      • rp17

Same problem… I’m using Google Chrome.

    • rp17

Something similar was happening to me but reseting the cache seemed to fix it…

  • Sebastian Bergström

    Way to go!

  • andrewjcole
  • Potemkin

    Interesting.

Did you guys also fix the random crashes on the mobile app? It would have been nice if you included the new Material Design theme to it, but it looks refreshing and a bit more organized.

    • http://codeversed.com/ Steve Albright

We spent a good amount of time fixing the random crashes. We upgraded our main REST api (which is not at all a fast task) so the overall app should perform much better for you. Material Design is on our radar and once Android L is out of preview, I am sure you will see some great UI updates!

Few bugs have been reported today so you can expect a small update by end of day to address those minor issues.

      Thanks for the feedback!

      • kwvin

You want good mobile menu system. Get rid of the real estate at the bottom. Also, the menu doesnt overlap ontop of the page it pushes everything down. Have it display ontop.

        • kwvin

Forgot. Some pages it doesnt figure out screen width correctly on galaxy 3s phone. im losses two re three words on the right

          • http://codeversed.com/ Steve Albright

What do you consider a good mobile menu system? There is actually an option to change from the sliding menu to slider tabs with a dropdown filter… you may like that better. I also have no idea what you mean on the menu does not overlap on top of the page and pushes everything down.

Are we talking about the Android app or mobile theme?

          • kwvin

I just use the stock internet browser that comes with galaxy 3s. What I mean qs whwn you hit the menu system it pulls down the menu in html but that html is probably in an empty div tag so everything gets pushed down. Vs. Html that is in a div that has draws ontop of the current page.

That is esthetics and it doesnt matter. Except the huge twitter at the bottom taking up huge real estate on a phone. Real eatate matterz. Doesnt on a deaktop.

Second the system is a bit off on the width and now it contrpls zoom so I can male it smaller to see all the worda cropped or scroll over. So I have to skip readin a few article.

  • Joel Cruz

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!It was great the way it was please return it or something similar

  • FutureFox

RIP old Wii U Daily design.

  • bistricky

Test …. okay it works ….. cool website (now make it better … LOL).

  • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

It’ll take a bit to get used to, but I think I’ll come to like it :)
seems the site is getting on fine without me :3

    • bistricky

Hey Zopix, buddy ….. your articles are missed. Brought this up about three weeks ago and Ashley replied about you leaving. Thanks again for your positive contribution to Wii U Daily.
      Cheers, my friend. :D

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

Are they? Well thank you for saying so :) It’s nice to be remembered fondly

    • Adrian

Change your name so you don’t constantly have to deal with people you don’t know talking abiut your articles haha.

      • https://twitter.com/Zorpix_Fang Zorpix

        XD it’s cool :P

  • Jose Luis

Unfortunately, I can’t see the full text of an article on my Nokia Lumia 925.

    • Jose Luis

Well, you guys improved it since this morning. Now I can see most of the text except for the full text on bullet points (list items). I guess this is similar to the others mobile devices.

  • C.S. Bailey

never used the app, always just went through Chrome. Something to try on my way to work later.

  • Adrian

Overall the changes are fine. But unsolicited pop ups are NEVER ok!

  • JBeauregard

the article pages are a nice upgrade, but the home page is barren and atrocious. This is just my opinion, but I find the home page to be uninviting.

  • brian

Uh… the whole page looks like crap now. It’s all bland and shit. Yesterday it wasn’t so bad. What happened?

    • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Try clearing your browser cache and see if that fixes it.

  • Turtler

I love the way it looks on mobile, but it was better the old way on computer.

  • brian

I think you accidentally made the browser page the mobile page. It’s all… small and narrow. And empty

    • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Sounds like a browser cache issue, please try clearing your cache and let me know if that improves things!

      • FutureFox

Refreshing the cache worked once but not subsequent times.

  • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Thanks everybody for the feedback so far, we really appreciate it! One thing I’d like to mention: if the site looks completely messed up in your browser, try clearing your cache first to see if that fixes it. We use a lot of caching techniques to try and improve the page speed but that can sometimes cause issues when we update and change code.

  • http://www.mpt-online.eu/ Sylux

Nice facelift, when I just swooped in 15 mins ago I was like err what? am I on the right site? Or is my WiiU driving me crazy…

But I’m getting used to it pretty fast looks a lot like the design we use in the company both in layout and colors but it’s cool, me likes. Love the header letter type which one is it? Maybe I can steal it on my mini Metroid site which drastically needs an update to html5 atleast. Great job WiiU daily.

  • Will.F. Martinez

It worked well on my mobile devices either way but it is still good to see a new lift

  • http://www.epicpassiveincome.com/ Elvis Michael

I personally find the old look more appealing. Just my opinion, though. Congrats, either way.

  • DOLBYdigital

Ahhh and another website is downgraded so it looks better on mobile devices…. No wonder mobile is growing, everything caters to mobile leaving the desktop version to flop. So much wasted space… I preferred the old school method much more, use sniffer scripts to tell when a mobile device is accessing the page and change the layout/design/css to the mobile version. Oh well

    • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

I’m not sure what you mean by wasted space, can you elaborate please? The old site displayed a total of 16 primary articles while the new homepage on desktop displays 24. We want to cater to all of our users, whether they prefer using mobile or desktop, thank you for your feedback!

      • Moreck

It doesn’t auto-format in a way that effectively uses the space on a landscape widescreen monitor.

  • BananaGram

Do you guys have an ios app for Wii U daily?

  • AkaLink77

LOL… if you zoom in on the home page it will turn to mobile.

  • Masterjoe

There isn’t a way to access the 3ds section on mobile.

  • anthony optimo

I dislike these condensed mobile sites, I like the web page look better on mobile

  • zoohero

Well im not loving the new wiiudaily. Im on my phone in my chrome browser and I cant use this site for anything now. Haf the text is not showing up on the phone because the site dos not auto fit it self to the size of the screen. And I can’t zoom out so that I can see the full page. And yes I know that I can just go to the app on my phone but I don’t wanna have to jump back and forth between the two. (Chrome and app) wen I am looking at news or something I shouldn’t have to do that just to follow up on the news on the wii u. Hopefully it will be fixed at some point in the near future. If not then im going elsewhere for the news.

    • http://neverstill.com/ James Hume

Thanks for the detailed feedback zoohero, several users have described having similar issues so I’ll add it to the top of my priority list.

      • zoohero

I can see that you have been working some long hours. It seems to be in perfect order now. Thanks for the kwik response. Now im happy again :-)

  • LukeMM95

What is this! There’s something wrong with the site! I DON’T LIKE CHANGE!!!

  • Rinslowe

I like it spartan. Clean. To the point. Nice Job Wii U Daily.
And is it me or has the pop up been dealt with? If so… nicer.

  • WiiUisgaming

I would recommend to add the 3DS option for the mobile users in the home menu, and also write the author’s name in the articles. Love the new design

  • Austin Troth

Does not work at all on iOS 6, you can’t scroll to the side and the articles format incorrectly. You can’t read more than a few words.

  • Thomas Vienna

I definitely like the old look better, this looks so bare. When I saw it first, I thought it hadn’t loaded properly. However, I do find that it loads faster, and that probably means that it uses less data, am I right?

  • oontz

Hey wiiudaily the mobile version of the site is utter crap now since you changed formats. Choppy scrolling, unable to copy paste, and big ass menu/link bar taking up 1/4 of the bottom screen.

  • FlashFan207

Loads up nice, neat and quick on my good ol’ iPhone 4. Way faster than it used to. Good job! Haven’t checked it out on my iPad, MacBook or the Wii U browser yet, but as I check Wii U Daily, well, daily, I’ll be testing it out on those as well very soon, I’m sure.

  • FlashFan207

Well umm, actually there is one thing. How come I can no longer see who the author is of the article? Is that intentional, or just a weird coincidence that the few articles I checked simply did not credit an author? Just a small thing, but I always liked seeing who’s opinions and research I was reading on this site, be it Ashley’s or whomever.

  • felony211662

    I like the new look

  • Moreck

This looks designed for low-end mobile devices. Meh.

  • http://nintendopapercraftvideos.wordpress.com/ Sam

I don’t like it. Too windows 8-like. The old version was perfect.

  • Denvy

I hope the app doesn’t hog my data anymore. Background usage was over 700 MB in a week for background alone. Way too much for a 2 gig limit.

  • Tray

Once the cache is cleared, the page looks awesome.

  • Christopher Ryan

This “facelift” creates far too much black and white space, with teenie tiny thumbnail images. Images are attention grabbers, not text. This site looks like it was made for my flip phone from 8 years ago. This would be a great look for 2006, but not for 2014. If it stays like this, I will likely look elsewhere for my Nintendo updates. It feels top much like reading a newspaper with little to no color. I’d highly recommend making the image larger than the headline, and the highest resolution you can find. I don’t want to leave this site, but I’ve done it before for this very reason.

  • X3Charlie

I like how sites like Zeldainformer and SimsVIP don’t use white for backgrounds. It’s easier on the eyes and feels more casual and comfortable. It’s too bright, making it feel harsh and serious in here. The banner ads don’t fit also and the margins are way too big.

  • nintendogamer

    Dear Wii U Daily,

Here are some things I recommend you do with the site:

    – Desktop Version Only

    1. Remove the “Recommended for you” pop-up.
    2. Put the the articles that are the most popular at that top section of the home page. I can’t really tell if you’re already doing or not. If you are then nevermind.

    – Mobile Version Only
    1. Add the option of switching to the desktop version.

    – Desktop & Mobile Versions

    1. Merge “wiiuforums.com” with “wiiudaily,com”.
    2. Rename the website “nintendodaily.com”.
    3. Put the the articles that are the most popular at that top section of the home page. I can’t really tell if you’re already doing or not. If you are then nevermind.
    4. Add the option of having a darker or lighter interface.

I hope you consider these recommendations, thanks! :)

  • greengecko007

“The biggest improvement for the new layout is that the site is now responsive, meaning it will conform to any device you happen to access the site on, including the Wii U browser.”

It looks just as terrible as it always has when viewed on a 3DS. That’s not really a significant issue, but you can’t really claim that the site works properly with every device.

The big issue is actually the “Recommended for you” pop up. Linking me to articles that are over a year and a half old seems like blatant grabbing for more clicks. There doesn’t seem to be any method to this madness either, like utilizing cookies to see what articles would actually interest each viewer.
