Wii U outselling Xbox One in New Zealand thanks to MK8 bundle

wii-u-bundle

A few weeks ago when it was announced that the Wii U exclusive game Mario Kart 8 has sold around 2 million copies to date, Reggie Fils-Aime went on record stating that the Mario Kart 8 bundle has helped quadruple Wii U sales in the matter of weeks. That appears to be true at at least one retailer, who is reporting that the Wii U is outselling the Xbox One.

Online retailer Mighty Ape is New Zealand based and announced the information via its Facebook page, stating:

Another massive Wii U console shipment just in. These babies are currently out-selling the Xbox One.

Currently the Mario Kart Wii U bundle comes with the 32GB console and Mario Kart 8, and until the end of this month, you can choose a free game as well. It’s nice to see the proof that the Wii U is continuing to perform well outside of Japan, where we get weekly sales reports. NPD Group numbers should arrive this month for June, showing us exactly how well Mario Kart 8 did for North America.

I’ve noticed that some shops in my country (France) don’t even propose this bundle. What a shame.

    • Darius

      wonder why?

      • Flintinator

They’re missing out on a lot of sales

        • great deku tree

not really. next to no one in the UK knows what a wii u is and just thinks that “it’s just wii stuff” and walks past it. yeah that’s what anybody says when they glance across the wii u section in the nearest GAME shop to me. EVERY time I’m in there not one single person even considers looking at or purchasing a wii u game. and I’m there at least once every 2 weeks. the SINGLE time I’ve ever seen anyone consider getting a wii u game was when I got my day 1 copy of MK8, they were also looking at MK8 although I don’t know if the guy bought it. (was too eager to get home and play MK8 haha)
it’s a shame really. the wii u is a great console. but most people don’t know what it is or when they do they just go “oh it’s not a next gen console” *sigh* if I hear anything like that from 1 more person I’m going to falcon punch them through a window.

    • Nintendoro

Same here in UK. Some retailers are missing out a lot I guess

  • bistricky

New Zealand …. okay. great. yes. they have good taste. Yup.

    BTW, where is Zorpix Den????

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Zorpix decided he no longer wanted to contribute to the site in a writing capacity, so that series isn’t continuing any longer. He’s still around in the comments, though.

      • Daniel Carvalho

And why did he take that decision?

        • CEObrainz

          I thought they were rather good, it’s a shame…

          • Daniel Carvalho

I feel the same way. He had a rather nice way to write his articles. Glad he’ll still be around the comment sections!

        • Lusunup

He probably had a lot on his mind and doesn’t have much time to type.

        • matthew garcia

He probably got the ol lady pregnant and doesn’t have time anymore lol. Just kidding

        • Arthur Jarret

He simply had no more time. He made a topic about it on Miiverse! You should totally follow him on there!

          • Daniel Carvalho

I certainly will. Once I get money for a Wii U (it costs around US$600 here in Brazil)

          • Arthur Jarret

            Wow, that’s quite an inflation.

However – if I think about it with the euro value it is USD$407.92 at the current rate over here. Not quite as bad as your situation, but also more expensive.

It seems console manufacturers are targetting the US as a budget country, like China.

No 3DS? You can have Miiverse on that too nowadays, you know.

          • Daniel Carvalho

I don’t know the exact price for a 3DS here, but it’s actually so close from the Wii U it doesn’t compensate getting the portable (I prefer home consoles, so I want to gt the 3DS AFTER I have a Wii U).

To make things worse, the console costs more than a minimum wage here, you have extremely high taxes for everything (48% for tomato extract, for example), you pay a lot for medical treatment that you don’t receive, for security that doesn’t exist, for schools that don’t teach your kids and for transport that is always late and keeps getting into accidents. Not to mention São Paulo’s (largest city in the Latin America) metro lines cover about 10% of the city!

In other words, even if I got a job and earned exactly US$600 per month, by the end of the month I’d have about US$100 or less left after all the abusively taxed stuff one HAS to pay for.

      • bistricky

Thank you for the reply Ashley.
Thank you Zorpix for your contribution to Wii U Daily. It was good stuff.

        Cheers :)

      • Ducked

Aw man really? I’m gonna miss those interesting topics.

  • audi lover

Fuck Na i want world sales

  • TheAnimal Fleming

Yeah cause mario kart 8 needs all the help it can its selling terrible

  • CEObrainz

Hopefully sales hold out a bit longer until Nintendo’s next big release. Whilst Hyrule Warriors may not sell too many units (Not sure how many DW fans have a Wii U already), I expect the game to have plenty of software sales.

    • Dark Lord Sauron

hyrule warriors in september and then in october bayonetta 2/package with the first one and after that plenty other games coming afterwards

  • https://www.facebook.com/BlueLightningTechnicalServices Bob Wilkerson

Is the XBOX Brand big over there? I know it does crappy in the Japanese Market..

    • ではない私の名前 これは

xbox has a solid following here in new zealand. but alot of people are jumping on the ps4 wagon. people are trying to sell there xb1 units already

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Big surprise.

  • anthony optimo

This just in, the Wii U is outselling the XBox1 4 to 1 in Kafirasthan. Four Wii U’s have been sold lifetime compared to the Xbox 1.

  • Sdudyoy

I’m not quite sure what to say about this, it doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, but I guess it is.

  • ではない私の名前 これは

whooop NZ rep. :D we rock

    • Foxko

Yes we do Derp…yes we do xD

  • Andrew Gonzalez

If only we could find the Mario Kart Wii U bundle here in the states :(

  • Petri

Wii U MK8 bundle is selling pretty well at my retailer as well.
    Another shipment almost sold.

  • Josiah Parsons

Is this more significant than I think it is?

    • LuLz

      Nope

  • Pilu Skifte Grønvold

I love the Wii U! My very first gaming console!

  • greengecko007

Is Mighty Ape Game’s the only place to buy a Wii U or Xbox One in New Zealand? If not, I don’t see how this shows that the Wii U is outselling the Xbox One in New Zealand.

    • Gatekeeper1980

Of course you buy Wii U or Xbox One in other shops like The Warehouse, JB-Hifi, EB Games, etc, but Mighty Ape is a well known (online) shop here. So I think it is a bigger deal to know that in their stock, Wii U is outselling the Xbox One. Title above might be just click bait.

    • Rinslowe

Yeah. I’ve spent a lot of time in New Zealand. Of course there are many places you can buy a Wii U as the other post mentions. I think it’s fair to say this is Mighty Apes results only and may not/ probably not representative of the overall performance.
New Zealand is mainly supporting Sony and MS consoles historically. Well last 10 or more years anyway. Of course the Wii did quite well. It’s fair to assume Wii U is third in pure sales no’s. And I don’t see it outperforming either PS4 or Xbox One there weekly/ monthly/ yearly etc…
Kart should give the hardware a decent boost though.

      • greengecko007

It’s good to see the at least one retailer isn’t having a hard time selling them, but I can’t help but feel that this article is making something different out of the information that we have. I don’t think most Wii U owners are desperate for news of good sales, nor do I think we need to be tricked to have a positive image of the product we’ve invested in.

I like this website, especially the community, and try to give the writers slack because I know this isn’t their job. I don’t mind them being a little slow on the job, but this is just bad.

        • Rinslowe

Haha. It’s pretty much one of those articles that you just gloss over and stow away to some non-specific, uncaring part of the brain, lol.
Very likely not a full representation of Wii U performance for the country. New Zealand only has a population of roughly 4.5 million people give or take. So no’s there would never be significant compared to the three main sales regions. Even Australia the closest neighbour has only 24+ million people. The remaining nations of the Pacific and South Pacific are Islands of relative populations. So any sales data provided would need to indicate the region more-so than any one country to be counted seriously. Again because it’s all relative.
And therefore based on that, I do wonder about the significance of this information. Especially seeing as though there aren’t any figures to go with.

        • Jonathan Robitaille

I can’t help but think you two are going out of your way to minimize this very anecdotal article. Seriously, you are complaining that there is news from one source that finds the Wii U to be outselling the Xbone. You really have to have utter disdain for the Wii U to complain about one man’s claim from East Bum FU CK New Zealand. I’m sorry it doesn’t fit into your desire to continue shitting on the Wii U. But for the rest of us it is nice hearing others in the world are buying the Wii U and can enjoy the great machine it is. Christ Rinslowe, you have really turned from a Wii U champion…to a Troll apologist…to a troll. What a shame. Your post almost word for word sounds exactly like something D.G. would post. Oh well, just another blight on the forum. Hope you enjoy your new friends.

          • Rinslowe

Funny I managed to read this post. As you even threw it in the wrong direction. Lol.
Hey look I’m sorry you feel I’m trolling here. But I’ll take that on the chin all the same.
Thing is I have many friends in New Zealand and travel there yearly/ often. Everything I wrote is accurate to the situation there in terms of which brands are more popular. Also my attitude towards this article is justified in that it really only represents a portion of the overall sales for that country AND that, that country has only a very limited population compared to the main sales regions for Nintendo. I'[m not hating on anything. I just don’t believe this one source to be significant to sales. For those reasons above.
Lastly, I have come to respect Gecko for some time now. Not always do we agree. But sometimes we do. He’s a Nintendo fan like most people here and that’s good enough for me. I haven’t changed my stance on any of the long time posters to this site. But can and will exercise a little civility wherever possible. I think you need to relax a bit. Have a cold beer if that’s what you like. Weathers so hot these days, I know I will be…

          • Daniel Gonzalez
          • Rinslowe

I guess you got a little ping behind the ears when I said long time posters and civility huh…

Well, fair enough. But I only see one glass in that picture.

          • Daniel Gonzalez
          • greengecko007

Thanks Rislowe. Yes, we don’t always agree on everything, but what two people do? I value your input and respect you, and you give me the same treatment.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Are you always this annoyed? Can only imagine what your blood pressure is on any given day. I do recall you were never coming back and sticking to the forums. Which was a few months back, or maybe more. Boredom?

          • greengecko007

Did you actually read what I wrote? Or did you just see my username and enter keyboard warrior mode?

I’m not complaining at all about a retailer sharing their experience with selling Wii Us, and how they are selling them successfully. In fact, you’ll see in my post that you replied to that I said, “It’s good to see that at least one retailer isn’t having a hard time selling them”. But that’s all this is. As you put it, it’s anecdotal evidence, and anecdotal evidence does not provide any indication on what it happening as a whole. This single retailer selling more Wii Us than Xbox Ones does not equate to the same phenomenon happening across the entire country.

  • Jake

Can’t wait till September. It will be Hyrule warriors against Sunset Overdrive. Even if people never played Dynasty Warriors. It has Zelda in the game so it will push.

    • james

Ah man I definitely will get Sunset Overdrive over Hyrule Warriors. Right now the only Wii U games I am excited for are Zelda and X.

  • Joecoo1

That’s pretty awesome MK8 and Nintendo First parties are a force to reckon with. Now only if they can get Third parties to hop on the band wagon.

  • Geckoblade64

WOOHOO! (From an NZ Wii U owner)

  • Rabbi Bongstien

I mean, come on guys, that’s pretty cool, right? My little brother is a knight in Canada.

My sister is a den leader in Girl Scouts.

My uncle is the second-in-line to be manager at Gart Brothers.

    Hmmm, yeah.

    • triplegamer3K .

      I don’t get it. :P

      • Rabbi Bongstien

Its from the Royal Pudding episode of South Park. Kyle is trying to act like his little brother being knighted in Canada means something…and then he realizes otherwise. I’m glad sales of Wii U are looking a li’l better but outselling X Box One in New Zealand is exactly like saying my little brother is a knight in Canada. Who cares? I’m from Chicago and our metropolitan population is larger than all of New Zealand so. But keep up the momentum Wii U!

        • triplegamer3K .

          okay. :]

  • gregthecanuck

All my local Bestbuy stores (western Canada) are sold out. Bestbuy.com in USA is also completely sold out. It appears Nintendo has supply issues. Don’t be surprised if they extend the cut-off date for the bonus game.

  • TheyCallHimBigAl

Kiwis really enjoy using the Gamepad. Since they have no thumbs they can just tap the touchscreen with their beaks.

  • FutureFox

Mighty Ape? I guess Donkey Kong is a significant shareholder.

  • JeffreyDBailey

It’s nice to see the proof that the Wii U is continuing to perform well outside of Japan, where we get weekly sales reports. NPD Group numbers should arrive this month for June, showing us exactly how well Mario Kart 8 did for North America. http://ur1.ca/hpuv6

  • Curtis Hofer

Yet they are still making Xbox One games over Wii U games, figure that one out.

    • triplegamer3K .

Well to be fair, the wii u is over a year old,and the xbox-one is only a few months.

      • Curtis Hofer

to be fair they hardly ever started making Wii U games

        • triplegamer3K .

Good point.3rd party Developers wouldn’t develop because no one was buying it.No one was buying it because 3rd party support was almost non-existent.

          • Curtis Hofer

            exactly

Bought my Wii U from mighty ape a few weeks ago. However i probably wouldnt have bought it if i didnt already have a PS4. That being said i have probably spent more time playing the Wii U and cant wait for the console exclusives later in the year.
