Japanese sales: Nintendo reclaims the top five

Wii U sales

Last week’s sales numbers for Japan are in thanks to Media Create and Nintendo has reclaimed the top five spots of the chart. Mario Kart 8 continues to hang around at number 3, selling 18k copies this week. Yoshi’s New Island only recently debuted in the country, so it maintains its second spot with 33k sold this week. Yokai Watch 2 still dominates the top of the charts with 143k sold this week, solidifying just how crazy Japan is about Level 5’s new RPG. Next week the game should break 2 million sold.

As for the rest of the chart, the original Yokai Watch is still charting, while only two of the top ten spots are claimed by Sony, one for PSV and PS3 respectively. As usual, the Nintendo 3DS continues to dominate the charts.

Well, not only does Nintendo have the top 5, the also have everything besides two games on this list.

    • Amy L Mccluskey-murphy

Nintendo was never dead like the world says and I think people focus way to much on the negative. BTW As I wrote this surfing this site a Wii u basic with six games was offered on the Price is Right.

      • matthew garcia

Japanese market Nintendo is doing ok while ps4 is doing horribly. For the rest of the world it’s a different story

      • Will.F. Martinez

Your right. Media focuses on Nintendo negatives and other console positive. Yes Nintendo is doing bad compare to there other consoles but other companies console ain’t doing any better but you wouldn’t hear about it as much as you would if it was Nintendo.

        • Amy L Mccluskey-murphy

All people can do is harp on The b N, meanwhile Anyone ever take notice that Microsoft is written on bad code, and charity on the backs of americans that were laid off years ago so that gates could fund his “charity” endevours?

          • Amy L Mccluskey-murphy

and I guess an extent the world’s beloved Xbox, still. Maybe they could have called it something other than Wii u like the former employee said but that is nothing, the point is Nintendo is not possibly going to go mobile and third party like everyone cries about. Every god damn company has a rough spot. BTW I want to establish that I’m just personally not friendly towards Microsoft regardless of who is c.e.o. Gates and Ballmer still founded Microsoft, and for years gates wrote code that didnt work across all different systems, etc. so

  • Jake

Some say console gaming is dying in Japan. It’s not. No games are being released on any consoles but 3DS and Vita and the Japanese are the only ones to not to buy a console on hype, cough PS4 cough

    • Josiah Parsons

Come now, the PS4 has some legitimately great games. Not to say it’s better than the Wii U, of course.

      • lonewolf88

good games coming but not really right now only kill zone the new infamous is a huge milk to the series they already finished it.

        • Jonathan Robitaille

it’s funny, you ask people what games and if they can even answer you it’s multiplats and average games at best KZ and ISS. Fanboys will be fanboys

      • Daniel Carvalho

Third Party support is stronger on PS4 than Wii U, that’s for sure. But taking in consideration Sony’s services, I can’t really say it’s better than the Wii U.

      • nintendope

Just better spec wire, but if you have both consoles I’m sure you agree the fun factor is for Nintendo, seriously I can’t turn on my PS4 more that twice a week, and I’m constantly trying to force myself to play it just because it cost me… (blame me, I also bought it because of hype).

        • Josiah Parsons

I actually own a Wii U, but I am constantly bugged by little titles like Towerfall and Sportsfriends that are PS4 only but look so fun.

          • nintendope

Yeah it gets annoying when you want to play stuff and doesn’t come out on the Wii U, I for one, want to play Destiny (people can call me every name in the book idc).

          • SkullScience

If you really want Towerfall get an OUYA. The console is cheap as chips and you can play most games for free. You can pick one up for the same price as a PS4 game now. I wouldn’t get Towerfall on my PS4, it seems somewhat out of place on such a powerful piece of kit (especially at the asking price). It seems odd to say that I have probably played more on my OUYA than I have on my PS4 since launch. The OUYA has delivered to its intended market, the PS4 is sadly lacking and probably will be until this time next year. 7th Gen is most definitely holding it back. That is not to say I am always playing on OUYA, I am a PC gamer, but there is so little on PS4 right now to set it apart.

      • 504HotBoy

PS4 does have great games. But not too many that appeal to the Japanese market. They have different taste from western gamers.

      • ben

        What games?

I’m sorry it has no good games at all.

        It has Second Son.
that is it.. one game. in almost a year. The rest of the games are ports.

        • Jonathan Robitaille

not saying you can’t also get it on PS3, but the remastered The Last of Us is reason enough for me to get one (though I still haven’t yet) because it was arguably the last gen’s top game and it is enhanced for the PS4 which has a better controller. That is the ONLY game I’d purchase if I get one. I haven’t played it yet but damn it I want to badly as I have beaten all my Wii U games except for a couple indies and TW101 which I can’t really get into.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Agreed.

      • SkullScience

Not really. As a PS4 owner I can see the first year as a massive disappointment. To the point if someone had told me this would have been the library at this stage I would not have purchased it back in November. I feel like this as a western gamer, the Japanese must feel mortified over the lack of dedicated software for the region. It is like they are treating their homeland as secondary. Such a western emphasis on the console was always going to alienate the Japanese consumer.

        • Matty

Consoles are largely plummeting in Japan this year. Japan is the last real console advocates along with the US. In Europe and the rest of Asia, PC is the primary gaming platform, and now many NA gamers are gaming on PC now as well.

If Japan falls, I don’t think we’ll see a PS5. That’s just fine though. Gaming will continue, it’s just we won’t have consoles to fight over, and we’ll all be gaming on the same platform.

      • Rich Garriques

what i never understood with stupid gamers these days is. what use is their having great specs with no good games. i never understood how that coincides . yes ps4 is a great console , but ps4 also has no great games at all. in fact most of them are already on pc and its copy cat x1. and most AAA devs these days make crappy games. far cry 4 , evolve , call of duty , battlefield , destiny and halo WILL NOT SAVE PS4 & X1. you know why? BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL THE SAME F#$$%%^ GAME!. FPS

      • Nickos Foivos

I have to agree that WiiU is way more played in the house than PS4. Recently, we bought a 2nd WiiU. LOL

    • The Clockwork Being

Yeah. Imagine if the PS4 had launched with games like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Dynasty Warriors and some japanese acclaimed games. The console would have sold almost like the Wii U at launched and would have probably the same progression. But why the blunder Sony did in Japan, it is barely catching up to the Wii U.

      • ben

It had Dynasty Warriors. The problem with the PS4 is the hefty production costs of games. The terrible pc architecture, which requires massive installs.
        The online charges.
The lack of any good games coming any time soon. Destiny may sell out in America but the title is niche in Japan. Japanese customers want action games. PS4 has no action games until bloodborne, and many Japanese customers feel like Dark Souls 2 was total BS.

        • Jon Turner

JRPGs as well. But FFXV won;t be around for awhile now and even then that could STILL potentially hit WiiU.

          • ben

Really, I can see FFXV going to wii u. Especially if Xenoblade sells well. Then Square will think deeply about the future with only 600 000 PS4s in Japan. It is selling worse than the Xbox 360 did.

          • Jon Turner

Of course chances are they will just be stubborn and refuse anyway, but on the other hand, I DO wonder if they can afford to be that dumb. Neither of the two systems has had any major JRPGs, and XB will arguably be the first to launch. That and FexSMT should also help build a fan base. It’s almost like they go where the money is.

          • J_Joestar

            KH3 as well hopefully.

          • Jon Turner

THAT one I think we have a better shot at getting than FFXV to tell you the truth. This is a franchise that would absolutely sell on WiiU. But it ultimately depends on whether SE sees the value in it. Given that the game is probably not going to be around for awhile (at worst it’ll probably be at the END of the console cycle!), at least there’s more possibility for that.

    • 504HotBoy

Hey I been trying to tell people that

      • Nickos Foivos

Honestly now, who cares for Japan? THEY must support WiiU!!!

    • LordiMcKill

Having a near 4000 sales gap between Wii U and PS4 shows which console is winning in Japan and that gap is going to get larger with the release of Hyrule Warriors in 2 weeks and Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros 4 ect in the next few months. Honestly if Sony don’t pull up now, its PS4 branded plane is gonna crash and burn, badly.

    • jjbredesen

Well PS4 is okey, but right now it has nothing major coming that interests me from a 1.st party perspective, from a 3rd party perspective there is a lot of great games coming, and there a couple big ones that are not coming on Wii U, but apart from that, and having better specs there is not a whole much there, and yes i have played PS4 a lot, i don’t own one, but i have played it with friends.

    • Rich Garriques

this is very true. ps4 has like 0% things to offer, its just now getting games… ahem when they release next month and towards the end of the year. x1 on the other hand has nothing. in fact x1 exclusives arent really exclusive anymore since dead rising 3 is coming to pc by the end of the month and ryse is now coming to pc sad really. and tv crap wont save xbox because that has absolutely nothing to do with gaming.

      • http://allday.com Jell0_13

xbox one is a great gaming console it has a lot of fun games but i do play my wii u more

    • Matty

Japanese devs are moving to PC and Mobile slowly. You may not want to believe it, but this is the start of a downward trend for proprietary hardware.

  • Jake

I find it awesome that if you add every hardware together (other than PS Vita TV) it only outsells both 3DS models by about 1000 units.

  • Rinslowe

A small increase for Wii U again is interesting. 18k more players to school online is good news, lol.

    • Jon Turner

This is why I keep saying that WiiU will have better third party support in Japan than in the West. The more WiiU sells, the more thirds will have to jump on board with mostly exclusives.

    • ben

The special editions of Hyrule warriors are all sold out.. I imagine next Thursday will see another big sales boost for the console. Then Nintendo will start promoting Bayonetta and Smash will get a release date.

      • Jon Turner

Really? They are all sold old? That’s great news! Koei Tecmo NEEDS this game to be a hit so that they can continue supporting WiiU without hesitation. Get all the other thirds in Japan to do cross-collaboration exclusives like this, promote them heavily, and make them successful and BAM! Things will pick up again.

    • Gordon Tillett

      Right, right.

  • greengecko007

Wow, I’m impressed at the 28% increase in Xbox 360 sales. Oh, and the Wii U doing well is of course good.

    • Rinslowe

I still believe the Xbox 360 is Japans most “consistent” console today…
      :)

  • WolfgangAmadeusMozart

Dat Xbox 360 sale jump !

  • Theamazingdude

Why are all the retards buying pii poos? Hell Assassin’s creed unity and rogue isn’t coming to that baby system(since it can’t handle anything past 2004 graphics)

  • Gizmo

Interestesting, Wii U and 3ds are still doing great in Japan.

On the other note, Xbox sold 157. Thats 156 more than what i was expecting!

  • Daniel Gonzalez

Basically, not much of a change from last weeks.

  • Mr Ninty

and over 2 weeks the wiiu will hit a minimum 10K a week. at least i hope

  • andrewjcole

Why the heck is Sony still selling PSP there?

    • oontz

because it’s still selling? They still sell it here in Taiwan as well.

  • Milky Bacons

XBox One isn’t even on there… xD
XBox 360 is better than XBone. Proven fact.
    Still Nintendo fan though.

    • FutureFox

Xbone hasn’t released in Japan yet.

      • Milky Bacons

        Oh.
        *facepalm*

        • Milky Bacons

It’s not like Microsoft will get any profit from there anyway……

      • Guest

It’s not like Microsoft will get any profit from there anyway…

  • FutureFox

    Tainted Bloodblines? Blines?

  • Jon Turner

Japan is the only country where WiiU outsells PS4. Hopefully that will lead to some potential third party projects on there.

  • fireheartis1

I’m glad to see the PlayStation Vita selling in some countries. I actually like the Vita and will get one this coming tax return. It’s a shame that America and Europe don’t consider it a worthwhile buy. It’s just as good of a handheld system as the 3DS in my opinion.

  • allvalve

Good news, hopefully Hyrule warriors will give the hardware numbers a temporary boost.
Then Bayonetta and Smash to take over later in the year.
I think after Smash, it would be a good time for Nintendo to bring out a players choice range with some of the older titles, drop the Wii U to around £199 with a game in time for Christmas. I think that would entice PS4/XboxOne to purchase the Wii U as their second console.

    • Jon Turner

BAYONETTA 2 MIGHT be a bit of a gamble since Platinum Games don’t typically sell well — at least initially. But hopefully Nintendo can push the title over there. Given that Western thirds are neglecting WiiU, they’ll need to galvanize the third parties in Japan to support it since WiiU is still ahead of PS4.

  • Jon Turner

And on another note, WiiU sold about 120k in America this July. By contrast, WiiU sold about 29k last year during this period. That’s a 413% increase over last year.

  • Nickos Foivos

Come on, nasty Japan!!! Give WiiU SALES now!

    • Jon Turner

And get Capcom, Namco, SE, Atlus, and Konami to step up their game on WiiU as well.

  • ben

The Wii U has over 2 million consoles in Japan. That is a fifth of the total sales of he wii. Console gaming is not dead in Japan, this is BS Sony fanboys tell themselves to justify the lack of sales for the PS4.
THe ps4 is just not a very good console, it costs too much to make games for and the architecture is not console based.

    • Jon Turner

And I wonder, can Japan third parties afford to make games on such a console? I don’t think WiiU has quite hit the 2 million mark just yet, but it HAS been gaining momentum in Japan over the last two months and I see it getting bigger with the upcoming release of HYRULE WARRIORS, BAYONETTA, and other such stuff.

  • perpetualentropy

hell if look in my log every month i use the wiiu 300 hours average sometimes more and never less except the first month i had it cuz i had one or two games..300 hours is alot but with 30 games soft modification [1600 nes games and 700 snes games] wii fit u… and the fact i found out you can modify the browser to ipad, chrome, android, etc and with websites like you tube and project tv any time im on the porch takin a shower doin the dishes so on some show or album is on the other 200 hours is adult entertainment and with the wiiu playing 99.9% of all the great videos the internet has to provide [with the browser modified in the setings] its alot and its pightning fast my pages load up in seconds
