Japanese sales: Wii U sees small boost, 3DS dominates

Wii U sales

As predicted last week, this week’s Japanese sales saw Yokai Watch 2 breaking the 2 million sold mark after only a month of being on the market, proving just how crazy Japan is about this new series. It features a lot of Pokemon like aspects in that you find and catch yokai to add to your team, but the battle mechanics for the game are more like the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series.

Aside from how well Yokai Watch is doing in Japan, there were also several new releases on Nintendo 3DS, PS Vita, and PlayStation 3, with five of the top ten being new to the list this week. The first Yokai Watch has fallen considerably to 9th place after dominating the charts for ages, while the same is happening to Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U. Last week it held its place at 3rd position, but this week it has dropped to 6th place. Still, a respectable 20k units were moved, making it the best performing console title that’s not new.

    Wii U keeps rising! :D

    • Magnus

With only 13,598 per week Wii U will still be Nintendos grand failure console. I think its aweful.

      • fireheartis1

Nope that’s the Virtual Boy Magnus. It only sold for one stinking month man. That’s the only console that has ever failed. Sorry to burst your bubble dude.

        • Magnus

Im not sure if Virtual Boy should be counted as one of Nintendos home consoles. It was more of an experiment really. BTW I dont think any of the consoles will do particulary well this generation. Not in the ranges as last gen systems anyways…

          • thedeciderU

            agree

          • Rinslowe

            Looks that way.

    • Daniel Carvalho

Let’s not forget that today Zelda Musou (Hyrule Warriors) was launched in Japan. We’ll see at least a steady wavering for the following week.

  • allvalve

Pretty decent result for the Wii U, I guess that’s Hyrule warriors anticipation.
The PS4 being outsold 2.5:1 by the Wii U, who’d have predicted that?

    • LordiMcKill

Can you blame them, there hasn’t been a solid PS4 title release in months.

      • TheChosen

Its not only the missing games ;) Its following points:
        – big console (PS4), which consumes a LOT of energy (yes japanese are very dependent on what they buy and use). Energy is very expensive there, just like living-rooms!
        – very expensive games! WiiU-games are a lot cheaper in average. Hell,Hyrule Warriors is not even 50 Euro!
        – Bad PS4-OS- which has many problems- bugs, freezing consoles, DOA-cases, overheating- PS4 itself has many technical problems everywhere, not only in Japan. I know people, which had to switch the console 3x allready
        – bad controllers- DS4s, which doesn`T last 100 hours before breaking.
        – Also very bad energy-consumption when using idle-mode in PS4 (vs WiiUs)
        – PS has no integrated Off-TV-feature. You have to buy a PS Vita to have that. So you have to spend a lot more money- even for the memory-cards of PS Vita
        – Games are lacking- its not that there are no games- no- there are simply no or nearly no GOOD GAMES. GOOD GAMES = rated higher than 80%

  • D.M.T

The Wii U is doing better and better every week. Bestselling home console in Japan and 3rd bestselling system overall. Wii U is also the 3rd bestselling system worldwide. Keep up the good work Nintendo!

    • MujuraNoKamen

wow sweet. It is still beating Xbox One right?

      • Ducked

        Yep, worldwide it’s…

        1: 3DS
        2: PS4
        3: PS Vita
        4: Wii U
        5: Xbox One

        • D.M.T

LOL no. There’s no way PS Vita is selling Wii U worldwide. You’re wrong Ducked. Even the Xbox One outsold the Vita worldwide.

          • Ducked

I was posting sales all time. They don’t post worldwide weekly sales as far as I’m concerned.

          • D.M.T

They do post worldwide weekly sales and the Vita is in 6th place. Wii U is in 3rd place.

          • Ducked

I can believe Vita being in last, but I wouldn’t rely in vgchartz if that’s what your talking about.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

That’s the last place I’d look. They have PS4 at 9.3 when it has hit 10 million according to Sony. Makes me wonder what Wii U’s actual sales are.

          • D.M.T

Sony is known for lying a lot. Those 10 millions are probably shipped and not sold to consumers. I wouldn’t believe Sony if I were you.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I wouldn’t believe Nintendo if I were you. Works both ways, DMT. Can’t always assume that it’s a lie. If they say 10 million has been sold, then I’ll take their word for it, just as I would Nintendo’s. Even despite Microsoft’s bs with the XBox One, I would give them the benefit of the doubt. Give credit where it’s due. It may not be the best system to everyone, but it is certainly on a roll.

          • D.M.T

Why wouldn’t I believe Nintendo? Sony is known for lying a lot more than Nintendo. If you don’t wanna believe Nintendo then that’s your problem Daniel. I didn’t expect different from you. If it’s true then congrats to Sony but I doubt it.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I said I wouldn’t believe Nintendo to show that it works both ways, DMT, not as a way of saying I never believe what they say. Obviously you didn’t catch on to what I was implying. It matters little on who lies more, because it just means both parties have been guilty. I wouldn’t expect anything different from you, I get you’re a bit biased on Nintendo’s end, and it’s understandable due to being a diehard fan. Despite being a fan of Sony more these days, even I don’t believe everything that is said. However, with sales, no one knows what is truth and what is a lie. This applies to Nintendo and Microsoft as well. I congratulate them on making 10 million. When Nintendo makes that mark, despite whether it’s true or not, I’ll congratulate them, too. It’s really that simple.

          • Rinslowe

True. Nintendo have been just as cagey lately by releasing only percentages instead of figures, as they know solid global no’s are hard to come by.
MS has been the smartest, by saying very little. I could be wrong. But they seem to be keeping things tightly confined. And not without reason, as far as sales go.

          • matthew garcia

At gamescon Sony said that was 10 million sold. They waited a while before they announced there new sales numbers which last posted was 7 million

          • D.M.T

Matthew it’s no secret to anyone that you are a dedicated Sony fan so of course you’re gonna believe them. I bet you marked out when you heard 10 million sold. If it’s true then congrats to Sony. It’s nice to sell a console like hot cakes because of hype alone.

          • matthew garcia

Everything sales off of hype. Sony had there time last gen. I talked mad shit about them. Ps3 was so overpriced and difficult for developers to program for and sales were horrible. You know what sold on hype last gen. The wii

          • D.M.T

Not everything sells because of hype. Wii U is selling because of the games. The original Wii sold because of motion control, not hype.

          • matthew garcia

Yeah it sold on the hype of motion controls. Ps4 is selling on the hype of Xbox screwing up there policies and everyone jumping ship and going to Sony. Sony is also selling on the fact that it performs multiplats better then Xbox. Wii u will always sale based on there 1st party exclusives to the hardcore Nintendo fans even though they lost most of the casuals to mobile gaming

          • fireheartis1

You know what’s funny about Microsoft? After they reversed their stupid policies I actually wanted a XBO, but when it was proven that it couldn’t handle most of the mulitplats I was like you know what I think I’ll make the PS4 my second console instead. It’s funny because this is the second time that Microsoft did something stupid to make a Sony console my second console. That’s really sucks because I loved the Xbox Classic a lot.

          • matthew garcia

Yeah I loved the original Xbox also. Knights of the old republic, halo, and spintercell, and jade empire were definitely some of the best games of that gen. Those games blew my mind at that time. No more mind blows from Xbox now lol

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Sounds like an opinion.

          • D.M.T

Yeah it sounds like an opinion but is it? I think not.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I have no problem with what you think, DMT. Though, I am free to disagree.

          • D.M.T

I don’t care if you disagree. Never did and never will.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

You cared enough to reply that you don’t care if I disagree. Never did and never will doesn’t really have any weight to it.

          • D.M.T

I reply because I want to, not because I care about your opinion. You are free to disagree, I don’t need you to agree with me. I reply because I like to speak my mind, that’s it.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

The same can be said about you, DMT, and how dedicated you are to Nintendo. Not sure why you even went there, other than to get the same counter charge. By how you’ve been going on about Sony is hype and Nintendo isn’t, it’s apparent that you’re in that same boat with Matthew.

          • Rinslowe

You’re the last guy that should be preaching Gonzalez. Possibly the “father” of Wii U Daily concern trolling and general Sony apologist posting.
            Bravo.

          • D.M.T

“Have a good day” Stop being a fake piece of crap Daniel, we all know you dont mean it. I’m not in the same boat as Matthew. The PS4 is nothing but hype right now, that’s a fact and the Wii U isn’t, another fact.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

“Have a good day” Stop being a fake piece of crap Daniel, we all know
            you dont mean it”

Holding old grudges close to your chest, I take it? Subtlety certainly goes a long way.

“I’m not in the same boat as Matthew.”

Considering you go on a rant about how third parties hate Wii U and hell if I can remember half of your past comments, that’s tough to chew. Don’t feel bad, we’ve all been in it, so really not sure for the denial.

“The PS4 is nothing but hype right now, that’s a fact and the Wii U isn’t, another fact.”

Yes. Your opinion is noted, DMT. I think this has been said about maybe 100 times at least from you? No offense, but it’s around that number.

Either way, it’s been a fun day. See you around, and take care. :P

          • D.M.T

I can smell your fakeness from here

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Nah, that’s actually your inadequacy. Being polite is a sign of kindness. You should give it a try.

          • Rinslowe

“Being polite is a sign of kindness”

“Fake” is pretty self explanatory. Lol
            XD

          • D.M.T

I can’t be polite to someone that don’t deserve it. You act polite to make it seem like you’re the bigger man but it’s all an act. You’re fake. Asking me to be polite to people like you is like asking me to flirt with a girl i’m not even attracted to.

          • Rinslowe

“like asking me to flirt with a girl i’m not even attracted to.”

My mother always said “never lead a girl on son”… My father always said later on “son, know what I mean?”…haha.

          • Merry_Blind

            Wtf is your problem man…

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Good question.

          • D.M.T

Why dont you ask the trolls that questions?

          • Daniel Gonzalez

He just asked one. If you’re going to go with the usual pot calling the kettle black routine. By all means.

          • D.M.T

He should be asking you that question, not me.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Might be that he knows what an actual troll is. Dodging the bullet only works for so long.

          • Rinslowe

“Dodging the bullet only works for so long.”

Well, that is certainly a topic you know intimately…
            XD

          • D.M.T

LOL dude you’re hilarious. You’re doing a better job at exposing him than me

          • Rinslowe

It’s kinda sad that he thinks we take each other seriously around here, lol. It’s no secret Gonzalez a class act a-hole. But I just like to have fun with the guy you know?

            :)

          • D.M.T

Me too but sometimes i can’t stand his fake ass.

          • Rinslowe

Only a few can/do/will with that guy.

          • D.M.T

He clearly has no idea what an actual troll is. Like i said, he should be asking you that question, not me.

          • Rinslowe

“I bet you marked out when you heard 10 million sold”.

Haha. That’s probably about right too. Gonzalez, Garcia and EpicGamer probably had a google hangout party to celebrate. Although I’m not entirely sure they’re even different people. I am certain that, that wouldn’t stop “them” from trying…

          • D.M.T

3 low life so called universal gamers that need to be banned from here.

          • Rinslowe

            Haha. Mmm, that’s a good one…
            More like; “universal a-holes”.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t believe they ban users for speaking their own minds, in a respective manner. I can’t recall calling anyone a low life, let alone, a fake piece of crap. Not to mention the potty mouth. So uhm….DMT, what does that exactly make you? Sounds like worse than an actual troll. Shame.

          • Rinslowe

Lol. It speaks volumes alright. A guy who’s speaking his mind just like you. But who happens to actually “have” a point…

          • Daniel Gonzalez

This is likely the only time I will respond to you. Sorry, Rinslowe, but there is no reason to call anyone a lowlife(not over video games anyway). I have my limits in what I say. Not unless you want to become exactly what you throw at the accused, then by all means.

            Speaking of…

            “Haha. Mmm, that’s a good one…
            More like; “universal a-holes”.

Looks like you already jumped on that boat. I wonder where those standards you speak so highly of went. I’m nowhere near perfect as I made mistakes of my own, but I sure do have more class than to support that kind of behavior. I see no reason to be mad at you to be honest, as it’s rather quite sad. Good luck with that path.

          • Rinslowe

Hahaha. I never take you seriously Gonzalez. It would be a mistake to do the same…
            :)

          • Daniel Gonzalez

“I see no reason for you to be mad at me either…
            :)”

You’re right, I see no reason either. That’s because I feel bad for you.

“You seem to assume I even care. And in that, assume much.”

Since you reply to any comment that you dislike(mine in particular), of course you do. To not care, is to not acknowledge. :P That means I care up to a point as well, but not to the level that you so often express on a regular basis. Can’t assume what’s obvious. I know that’s a tough one for you to chew. It’s usually good to own up to your mistakes. You’ll get there eventually.

Yeah, I respond back, but unlikely isn’t a guarantee. Sounds like you need a dose of reality. Have a good one. :P

          • Rinslowe

“To not care, is to not acknowledge. :P That means I care up to a point as well, but not to the level that you so often express on a regular basis.”

You should learn not to take yourself so seriously, sonny.

” it’s easy to spot your insecure behavior.”

Haha, mmm hmm. It’s kinda obvious you’ve taken this whole thing to heart. Lighten up a little…

          • 00EpicGamer00

Why should I be banned precisely? Don’t you remember me? The “Xbox One is a VCR with TV capabilities” comment that I responded to you with, that one time? Unless there’s another user on here with the name “EpicGamer”, without the 0’s that I have no knowledge of.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Far as I know, you’re one of a kind here. I wouldn’t fret too much over it. The ones who are mentioning others, are just insecure individuals who take their dislike to new levels. Kinda sad when you think about it. Take care man.

          • Rinslowe

            Group hug?

          • 00EpicGamer00

Why thank you, kind sir. You’re one of a kind as well. Yes, it is very sad. I wish we could all just get along, but….I don’t think that’ll ever happen. As much as I wish it would. Take care as well.

            “Endure and survive.”

          • D.M.T

I confused you with someone else. Sorry about that.

          • 00EpicGamer00

            No problem.

          • 00EpicGamer00

Just so you know (I know you made this comment a little bit before my “apology” comment but still, just for future reference) I don’t at all care about how much a console or anything sells. If I like it, that’s good enough for me. Look at the GameCube for example. That was probably like the best Nintendo console ever. It had allot of awesome games, but the downside was it didn’t sell to good. But I don’t care about that. It had a ton of games that I enjoyed. And THAT’S what I care about.

I think these articles are just so the site can get some “clicks.” None of us “need” this information, right? Yeah yeah, I know the number of sales of a console counts as “news” but my point still stands.

Also, I have never used any social media ever, so I don’t know what this “Google hangout party” is…..

          • Rinslowe

Was that your attempt at a serious conversation? I thought we established this point already…
            :)

          • 00EpicGamer00

            What?

          • Rinslowe

            ??

          • 00EpicGamer00

            ???

          • Rinslowe

            ?

            .

          • brian

No, they actually mentioned that the ten million number is sold to consumers.

          • Rinslowe

Although that does seem to be the no’ being touted. It’s virtually impossible to find that being said directly from the horses mouth. Just for the record, I’m a PS4 owner as well and these no’s actually mean very little outside of comment sections like these, to me and not a whole lot inside the comment sections either – tbh. All systems have games worth playing that validate a purchase, imo. But having said that in Sony’s case no’s are quite frequently exaggerated for effect. To suit their focus.
It’s quite common knowledge that global PS4 sales as of April this year stood at roughly 7m. We also know that at the time of releasing their latest financial statement no’s were confirmed @ roughly 8+ m. That report indicated in words clearly a waning PS3 market globally with a majority of sales due to the greater performance of PS4 hardware. Software was not noted as a factor except for PS3. In the related presentation they communicate 3.5 m unit sales between both PS3 and PS4. Confirming PS3 sales made up about half of all units sold within that quarter. We don’t need to speculate on the advantages Sony still has in manufacturing PS3’s today. Or what the continued popularity means to certain studio’s and their development process and experience gained on that platform over the years…

Of course none of this changes the fact PS4 is a sought after console right now. Or that the experiences found now and coming aren’t worth buying into. In fact it’s shaping up to be a phenomenal platform with titles like No Man’s Sky, LBP3, Rime, Drive Club, The Order 1886, Bloodborne, Deep Down etc.

Sony are well know for this, just saying. Nintendo has been doing a similar thing recently by providing % wherever possible, instead of confirming those elusive global figures.

          • Shootdatrupee!…

That would mean VGChartz is ~700k off. They’re not this far off normally…

          • Rinslowe

It’s true Sony plays the full gamut of releasing PR disinformation. But their sales are still impressive nonetheless..
Right now they’re trying their best to make PS4 the main focus, while juggling a hugely profitable PS3 business. But, there can be only one. Lol.

          • D.M.T

I’m happy for PS4’s success but i have a feeling that they are lying about the whole 10 million sold to consumers.

          • Rinslowe

It’s likely to be units “shipped”.

          • Magnus

            6.9M about.

          • D.M.T

Ok…then what’s your source of information? Because the Wii U is still outselling the Vita no matter where you find your info.

          • Ducked

I was just posting all time sales. Which Sony announced back in April that the Vita passed 8 million. While Nintendo recently announced that the Wii U has sold 6.66 million.

          • D.M.T

Sony announced that Vita passed 8 million in April and VGChartz says Vita has sold 700,000 units since then, so 8.7 sold and yet you say that VGChartz isn’t reliable lol

          • Ducked

It’s not reliable. They’ve been wrong in the past plenty of times. We have no idea how they estimate sales.

          • audi lover

Not in uk unfortunately and people buying vita to use as second screen like wii u game pad works great as long as wifi is

          • greengecko007

The Vita is certainly not selling anywhere close to what the Wii U is currently, but I’m curious where you go to see these weekly updates in worldwide sales.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

I’m sure he made it up. You can only tally them up on a monthly basis.

          • D.M.T

You’re retarded dude. I have no reason to make things up.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

As my point is spot on, unless you can show where you get your sources pertaining to worldwide sales. Doesn’t sound too retarded. Nice try, though.

          • D.M.T

VGChartz not being a reliable source is your opinion retard. And no your point is not spot on as I already said where I get my info from. Nice try but you still sound retarded.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

VGChartz isn’t even accurate with their tracking. How is it an opinion when it’s a clear fact? That’s a new one on me. Indeed spot on. Nice try again. Rest easy now.

          • D.M.T

            VGChartz

        • BIG Franky

Vita is dead in the water…. not one title for it announced at Gamescom… that thing is DONE. basically off-TV play for PS4 at this point and nothing more… sad. such a missed opportunity on Sony’s part.

          • fireheartis1

I know right the Vita is actually a very cool handheld. If they would lower the price I would love to get one, but sadly at this point I cannot afford it. That’s too bad because I actually like it better than the 3DS.

          • greengecko007

And the fact that the Vita uses external memory cards for saved data, which are criminally overpriced. Too much money involved for what is mostly a portable JRPG machine.

        • Rich Garriques

          vita bahahahahaha , keep dreaming

          • matthew garcia

He’s just going by lifetime sales. I’m sure Wii u will pass it up soon

        • allvalve

          Actually, worldwide its….
          1:Xbox 360
          2: PS3
          3: 3DS
          4: PS4
          5: Vita
          6: Wii U
          7: Xbox One

Of that list 3 will be dead by next year (1,2 and 5)
I wouldn’t be surprised if Xbox One is killed early the year after much like the Xbox.

          • Ducked

I was counting 8th gen. In that case it actually be

            1: DS
            2: Wii
            3: Xbox 360
            4: PS3
            5: PSP
            6: 3DS
            7: PS4
            8: PS Vita
            9: Wii U
            10: Xbox One

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Actually….PS3 passed 360 in worldwide sales a while back.

    • Brandon

Are you talking about this gen or overall?

      • D.M.T

        Overall

        • Brandon

Im pretty sure its neither. The wii u is not the third best selling system of this gen or any gen in any country.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

            Unfortunately.

          • TheChosen

Lol. Unfortunately? Says who? The Sonyboy Daniel Gonzalez? PS4 doesn`t even have 90% rated games, and now read it fully- that are NO PORTS or REMAKES! Only Ports did achieve 90% there. After 9 months nearly no good games. What is this? Metacritic doesn`t lie. Resogun and Infamous Second Son both are rated under 80% and thats the half lineup for PS4 for now. Wolfenstein…wow- i can play that on PC with better graphics. no point in buying a console for this. Where is Uncharted? Where is the next Motorstorm? Most titles were delayed to early/summer 2015.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

Hi there, David Trail 2.0. :P

          • D.M.T

I’m not talking about life time sales dude. I’m talking about monthly and weekly sales.

    • Magnus

Actually no. Its doing just as bad as it always have.

      • Daniel Gonzalez

        Did you lose your account?

    • JudgeMethos

Home consoles are against home consoles and handhelds are against handhelds. Wii U is 2nd in home worldwide. Just sayin…

  • Jeffrey Debris

Very nice to finally see the Wii U pass the 10K barrier again. Hopefully this is a trend! :)

  • Ducked

Sony, next time you release a console in Japan, release it with games.

    • Daniel Gonzalez

Games that appeal to the Japanese that is.

      • Ducked

Yes. Although pretty much every game on the PS4 right now can be played on PS3.

        • Daniel Gonzalez

I don’t see it as a bad thing. It’s nice to have that option if you ask me. Of course, majority of development will move over to PS4 than PS3 as time goes on. Either way, PS3 will see support for another 3 years at least before slowing down.

          • Ducked

I’m still comfortable with my PS3. Once big games come out like Arkham Knight, Final Fantasy XV, Uncharted 4, Kingdom Hearts III, and Star Wars Battlefront 3, will be enough for many gamers to convert over. The reason I haven’t bought a PS4 yet is because I know my ps3 would get more attention. Not a bad thing I suppose.

          • Daniel Gonzalez

True. Not everyone has to jump ship right away. Gotta do what’s best for you. :P

          • Jon Turner

I personally will not be buying a PS4 myself (I just don’t like the way Sony is going about selling it; using hype and smack talking of WiiU just to get their sales), but I WILL borrow one from my best friend if in the event KH3 doesn’t make it to WiiU. (Although with the recent surge of sales for WiiU in Japan it’s at least hopeful. Then again we have yet to see anything from over there.) Here’s hoping HYRULE WARRIORS will be a hit, and likewise BAYO 2 and SSB4. If they can sustain WiiU, then thirds over there will jump on board.

          • Ducked

Japan is the main selling point for Kingdom Hearts 3. And I’m sure Wii U will keep its #1 spot in Japan easily. It would just make a lot of sense for them to port KH3 over to Wii U.

          • Jon Turner

Honestly, I haven’t seen many Japanese third party announcements for PS4 recently. OK, so maybe the SILENT HILL and the RE remake, but those hardly count. Even so, I have a feeling several of these thirds will have no choice but to port their titles to WiiU over in Japan if they want to make more money. It would be real stupid of them not to. If WiiU dominates over there, then there will no longer be any excuse to avoid it.

          • TheChosen

i wouldn`t expect KH3 before 2016- if i were you. Just a good clue. It will take years from now on to get this done. And for the rest…ah? StarWars Battlefront 3? When does that come? End 2015? Final Fantasy XV will flopp again, mark my words. Just don`t expect wonders from it. The developer isn`t going to put money and love into it. Its just rushed out (as so many titles today). So all in all- half of that list won`t come before End of 2015.

          • Ducked

I’m just trying to be optimistic about kingdom hearts 3 releasing before 2016, even though I doubt it. Battlefront releases next summer. I’d hardly call FFXV rushed, the game has been in development for eight years lol.

          • Rinslowe

Despite what the PR machine is saying. Many of Sony’s total console sales are still being made by PS3. So long as PS4 continues to sell well. The move over to development for third parties to PS4 may happen as it usually does. However, that’s not a guarantee third parties are going to choose to do so, at least without incentive, so long as PS3 continues to perform so well. Manufacturing costs and unit sales as well as development is still an attractive proposition for many studios, while the audience is there to support it…

    • Petri

It makes me sad and glad at the same time, that Sony can get away with the library they have.
Sad seeing the direction the gaming is going to, and glad because I would not want to see the world with Microsoft dominating gaming.
Sony would be pretty close to bankruptcy, if PS 4 wouldn’t be going good for them.

      • matthew garcia

        That’s for sure

    • Marcus Larsson

How was wii u’s first year now again?

      • Shootdatrupee!…

Started with 23 launch titles. Which is more than Wii, DS, or PS3.

        • Marcus Larsson

that shows that less launch titles equals more consoles sold

          • Shootdatrupee!…

AHA! I always KNEW the secert formula to success lied somewhere in plain view! The next Nintendo console should have NO launch titles! It’ll be a SMASHING success! XD

          • Marcus Larsson

            Yes!

        • 00EpicGamer00

But how many of those 23 were 1st party? Not many. I know this argument can be used against Sony and Microsoft as well but most (if not all) people buy a Nintendo console for the exclusives.

          • Shootdatrupee!…

Of 23, 3 were first party. Many more were exculsive 3rd party(Tank Tank Tank, ZombieU).
However, of the 11 DS launch titles, there were only 2 first party titles, and one was a remake.

          • 00EpicGamer00

Hmmm, point taken….well, I’m stumped. Maybe handheld gaming is more “enjoyable” to people than home console gaming?

    • Rinslowe

Solid advice for any console in any market, ever…
      :P

  • greengecko007

These Japanese gamers must be anticipating Hyrule Warriors. How else do you explain an increase in nearly 4 thousand units? Good numbers for the Wii U this week.

    • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Most certainly they are. Hyrule Warriors is like the third most wanted game in Japan right now. It’ll be really interesting to see the numbers for the game next Wednesday. I’m looking forward to it.

      • MujuraNoKamen

What are the top 2? It’d be great to see Wii U hardware/software claim a number 1 spot.

        • http://about.me/overlordror Ashley King

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate on 3DS and Persona 5 on PS3.

          • LordiMcKill

I wouldn’t be surprised if Pokémon ORAS was on that list somewhere.

          • TheChosen

Persona 5 on PS3? But not on PS4? Hahaha. Aha, yes seems like logic. Next games only on old hardware. Just one step away from releasing the game on 3DS/PS Vita and/or on smartphones for “cheap”- you know f2p.

      • darkcreap

Being third I wonder if it will be at a lot of distance from the first two. Hope it does well. Nintendo seems to be consistently gaining track in the last months.

  • D.M.T

Oh wait a minute: Hyrule Warriors will be released tomorrow in Japan. That means that the Wii U will do a lot better next week. Wii U could become number 1 next week, outselling the 3DS LL. Remember that Hyrule Warriors is the 3rd most wanted game in Japan.

    • matthew garcia

My guess is that Wii u will sale 25000 consoles in Japan next week

      • Magnus

Still horrible. At this time one would expect sales around 100K per week…

        • matthew garcia

In America that’s for sure but all consoles have taken a dip in japan.America is owned by ps4 at this time and America is the main market that you wanna dominate this gen

          • Magnus

True, but Japan has always been Nintendo market. Seeing how poor it sells there does not make the future of Wii U look too bright.

          • Petri

            From N64 to present.
So far only Wii and Wii U has outsold Sony platforms in Japan,
Wii only by around 2 million, and I suspect PS4 might surpass Wii U over there as well, if the games arrive.
So unless you mean handhelds… well on that front Nintendo has not been beaten once, on any continent.
The development over there all together does not look too bright.
I do not want a console that only has “western games” developed for it by west and east.

          • Magnus

You are certainly right on your numbers. But one should not only look on who sells best. Look on raw numbers instead.

          • TheChosen

if the games arrive? “If”? Hahahaha- what games? Its the same problem with 3DS, which had no games at the start => no games => no sales => but also => no developer starting making gamse when the console/device sells as bad as PS4 does. You do know, that Kingdom Hearts 3 will come – 2016/2017? It might now even get canceled. And Final Fantasy will not comebefore 2015 or so. And i think- as all three last FFs- it will flop. And thats it. I don´t see any more games japanese want from PS4.
In fact- Hyrule Warriors is the most wanted game in Japan. Not Yakuza, not Monster Hunter. No- Hyrule Warriors, as it might be a again a next 90%-title- only from Nintendo.
PS: No i don`t think, PS4 will have any more chance, after Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors come out in 1 month. It will be game over for PS4 there, lol. There weren`t any announcements for japanese gamers. Its not alone the missing sales which keeps japanese away from PS4. Its the bad hardware (defective, DOA, bad controllers which breaks after just 100 hours) too. The bad OS- which has many failures. You see? 1-2 games which are – i bet my ass on it- only be medrioce, as japanese developers which are left for PS4 – simply won`t get the money in them- won`T change that.

          • Rinslowe

“i bet my ass on it”

According to this guy, you should “assume position”…
            Just saying.
            http://wiiudaily.com/2014/08/japanese-sales-wii-u-sees-small-boost-3ds-dominates/#comment-1541020090

          • TheChosen

yeah- i just think, that that FinalFantasy coming in 1 year or so for PS4- simply won`t cut it. You know? They only want to make it a low-budget-title. Thats it. The same goes for Kingdom Hearts 3- which will be much better- but yeah- won`T come before 2016! In 2 years! Hell, no one knows what could happen in 2 years from now.

          • Rinslowe

“no one knows what could happen in 2 years from now.

So long as it doesn’t involve a planet killing asteroid collision with Earth. Should be good times…

          • TheChosen

Haha. But yeah kinda like that.

          • TheChosen

WiiU has no more dip, matthec garcia, so your logic is flawed. Instead, WiiU recovered all lost numbers in just 3 weeks.

      • iago parrot

        Troll

      • TheChosen

sale? Wrong stupid guy. You SELL units, you don`t sale them. Hahahaha! pathetic stupid Troll, which doesn`t even know how to articulate right in english. Stupid grammar, eh?

  • http://wiiudaily.com/ Colin Malone

Wow… Xbox is only selling in the hundreds over there. That’s… kind of sad really.

    • D.M.T

Kind of sad? It’s pathetic actually

      • BIG Franky

honestly, considering it is an almost 10-year old console… that isn’t too bad…

        • Rinslowe

Without a doubt, Japan’s most consistent selling console of the last few generations. Possibly. And imo…

    • tronic307

That’s because the dudebro culture is alien to the Japanese.

      • matthew garcia

They have the wack off to manga culture over there

  • BIG Franky

uuhhhh……. a 41% increase is a “small boost” ???? Ashley needs to brush up on her math, methinks. :)

    • PapaBrownBear

They’re selling small amounts so I think for one to consider a boost significant would mean it’s 150% – 200% and so on.

      • BIG Franky

its all relative….but when a console is regularly selling roughly 9,000 units, and then it jumps to 13,000… that is not a small increase by any measure.
now if you compare that to the number of PS4’s being sold here in the states, that seems small, but that’s dumb and not an apples to apples comparison.

        • Rinslowe

It’s still small. How to argue otherwise? But you’re correct as well, obviously.

          • BIG Franky

gaaah…. I hate being a financial analyst. I have to remember not to comment on these things on the internet.

          • Rinslowe

No you don’t hate being a financial analyst at all. Haha…
But I know what you’re saying. Back in University I lived in my olds second home and rented out the spare rooms for a bit of extra coin. One of the guys was just starting out as an accountant. And one night offered to make us all dinner. So why not, normally we looked after ourselves having different schedules. Anyway the very next day we all get this print out. A cost breakdown of every item eaten split perfectly. So yeah, that was an eye opener. And a helpful lesson learnt…

          • TheChosen

is the increase of sold PS4 wordwide – from 110k to 180k this week (plus of 70k) also a small increase? Remember, this is also only around 60 % ;)

  • Petri

Over a month for western release of Hyrule Warriors.
I hope it will make time fly until end of October.

  • bistricky

If the home gaming console is to return big in Japan, the Wii U will lead the way.
A recent poll has Hyrule Warriors as Japan’s Most-Wanted Wii U game ….
So, Wii U sales are going to jump …
    :D

  • LordiMcKill

Is anyone else notice that the Wii U is beating PS4 in Japan and PS4 is beating Xbone pretty much everywhere else.

    • Brandon

      Ps4 is dominating everyone

      • LordiMcKill

        Expect the Japanese…

        • Brandon

          Yeah your right lol

        • TheChosen

and the funny thing is- japanese sales are much more important this time. Without japanese sales => no future Kingdom Hearts, no Final Fantasies, no Monster Hunters, no Tales of…no hell you know what i mean don`t you?
Without japanese good sales => next Monster Hunter will also be handheld/3DS-only- Tales of will come to 3DS instead to PS4, there will be no more japanese titles at all.

  • Nick Ruozzi

360 is so funny, its always in the hundreds!

    • Nothing5555

Its because the 100-200 people in Japan who bought the 360 keep buying replacements due to the RRoD.

      • Petri

How many American soldiers there is currently stationed in Japan?

      • oontz

        Zing!

  • Scott Duperree

3 weeks of increase in Japan, hopefully this translates to North America (though if it does we wouldn’t notice the pattern until next month)

    • Rinslowe

I doubt that pattern would be anything to write home about in any case.

  • J_Joestar

    *sees #3 on the list*

    • Merry_Blind

      !!

  • fireheartis1

Wait I see the Xbox 360 on there, but where is the Xbox One? Has it been release in Japan yet? If not Microsoft must be pretty dang stupid.

    • Petri

You see those crappy console sales?
Must be because people hyping for some major xboners.

  • Jon Turner

Looks like Japan will be the ONLY place where WiiU outsells PS4. And HOPEFULLY leads to better support from over there. It would be nice if KH3 hits WiiU as well, but who knows. That game isn’t going to be around for some time, and by the time FFXV hits, WiiU will be well and above the PS4 over there. I think I smell a potential WiiU port.

    • Rinslowe

So long as whatever local support that garners, turns to localisation as well WW.

      • Jon Turner

Well of course, that’s what I want to see. People keep on telling me it will never come to pass that thirds won’t ever return. I personally don’t believe that, but I feel like I’ve been scolded to think such things.

        • Rinslowe

I think there’s more chances of exclusive third party content being made available than multiplats.

          • Jon Turner

I’m all for exclusives, yes. But I hope at least KH3 comes. If Nintendo DOES go after multi plats again I hope they do so carefully and not recklessly. KH3 would be a perfect fit for WiiU.

          • Rinslowe

I know where you’re coming from and that would be good for the platform. Especially a game like KH3 which just seems like a done deal for Wii U, according to the audience.
But putting certainties and Nintendo in the same sentence makes me nervous almost. lol. So not sure about it ever eventuating.

          • Jon Turner

I know. Hopefully Nintendo and SE can work something out.

  • Rinslowe

Interesting to see a seemingly random sales spike for Wii U.
Unrelated, it was also interesting to know of the 3.5m PS4/PS3 sales from last quarter WW, roughly half were PS3’s.

  • Leo

PS4 is such a flop in Japan that is not even funny.

    • 00EpicGamer00

The Xbox One will be an even bigger flop once it releases….IF Microsoft releases it there. If you think PS4 is doing bad (which…it kind of is), I can’t wait to see your and my reaction to the Xbox One, lol. If it’s fair to go off of past events, the Xbox One doesn’t stand a chance in Japan.

      • Petri

Trust me, Japanese are waiting for Xboners, hence low PS4 sales.
MS will enter untapped market with great titles, such as… such as… TV?

        • TheChosen

Don`t think so, sorry. Xbox might also flop in japan. Its just that Xbox One has 90% of the same games the PS4 has- 75% of the lineup consists of shooters and racing-games. No point in buying this.
Japanese people are waiting for big RPG-games like X or FF, epic games like Bayonetta 2, games like Yakuza or hell- Monster Hunter and Hyrule warriors. And guess what? Two of those games are coming exclusively in the next 2 months on WiiU.
So i would expect even a bigger flop of Xbox One there. No games for japanese in the lineup.

          • 00EpicGamer00

I think he was being sarcastic.

          • TheChosen

            Haha…funny then.

    • james

Well when you have sold over 10 million consoles in less than a year, I dont think japan sales are all that important anymore.

  • james

Im really curious how Xbone will do when it releases in 29 more makets including in China next month. Should close the gap on PS4 which has been out in more countries so far.

    • Rinslowe

Well they have one confirmed sale here in any case. That’s about as accurate as my speculations get for now…
I haven’t seen any official advertisements anywhere yet though. So hard to gauge how it’s going to go. My opinion is though that without local studios behind it and the right marketing, sales will be quite limited. Having said that, even if after a year on the market sales only start to improve. There’s still plenty of potential for MS to do well overall this generation. Because if they manage to achieve that brand recognition the Chinese are addicted to in recent years. Well the market for those that can afford the system is “huge” and growing daily…

      • oontz

“I haven’t seen any official advertisements anywhere yet though.”

They’ve started beefing up the adverts over here in Taiwan, and selling pre-orders. However to be honest it doesn’t seem like it’s even close to the level that Sony went with the PS4.

  • james

Japan sales are interesting, but not nearly as important anymore as US/Europe sales. Thats where the majority of consoles sales are happening. PS4 has sold over 10 million consoles in less than a year despite only selling a few thousand a week in japan. Japanese sales figures really dont reflect a consoles status very well.

Wrong. In Fact Japanese sales today are the most important. Why? Because if Japanese decide not to buy a PS4, there will be no more japanese Titles developed from Square-Enix, Konami or Namco-Bandai. They only develop titles, if japanese guys buys them. The developers does not interest, that there are a few million buyers outside of japan. So japan is the last bastion of games- when this falls- this means, shooters, shooters, shooter, and only a few racing-games and action-adventures (meaning only western developed games) will be left. Kingdom hearts might also be canceled, if the numbers are getting worser! You see? No moster Monster Hunter 5 for consoles (and part 4 isn`t even out yet and won`t come to any console, except maybe WiiU in 6-12 months).

      Thats how it goes today.

      • Jon Turner

They COULD always bring them to WiiU… ah, who am I fooling?

        • TheChosen

Yeah, that could be. But i doubt it! Last Kingdom Hearts (Dream Drop Distance) was on 3DS! A handheld! And it sold very well! I bought it. It was good and i even didn`t finish it yet (lol, had no time).

The point is- if PS4 fails, i also think that WiiU will not get so many sells that they will make the game on a console anymore. Its the same, which happened to Monster Hunter.

You know? Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate was a new game. But in fact they used the old Wii-engine, bunched it up a bit, added more resolution and made new content and taddaaaa- it was a test. Out came Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. And because of the less userbase of WiiU- the sales were not so good. Capcom decided to bring MH4 exclusive for 3DS then. And they didn`t change their mind.
They said- they live in hard times. They have to do sacrifices now. Maybe this means we will never see any monster Hunter (Part 5 if at all) on consoles again. It may mean, that all Monster Hunters in Future will only come out for the most successfull handheldsystem and/or even for smartphones.

          • Jon Turner

MH3U did OK on WiiU, but I think right now they’re trying to cut costs. But from the looks of it WiiU IS beginning to regain momentum; I don’t think Nintendo should give up on thirds altogether — if the system continues to rise, the maybe we’ll see third parties on WiiU again.

          • TheChosen

Its not about consoles or their success ;) Its only about costs now!

Japanese developers like capcom made it clear they won`t bring any MH to any console again if the development-costs are too expensive (Which they are => Wii-game => 5 mio. dollars, 3DS-game now => 5 Mio-dollars- for example one PS4-game? Not under 20 mio. dollars!) ;) So you see the problem? Thats where it goes.

And it won`t stop with monster Hunter 4. This goes for many more games which were once on PS3 to found.
Next Final Fantasy exclusively for 3DS announced. Also a exclusive Persona-game. Why do they do that? Because 3DS-games are MUCH CHEAPER than ANY console-game (excluding old Wii-games). Thats how it goes.

Console-games today does not cost below 20-30 mio dollars in development. In many cases one PS4 one game costs 100 mio. dollar to make (things like CoD Advanced Warfare or – well- big budget games).
Even WiiU is now too expensive for Capcom (4x more money is needed to make a good WiiU-game instead of an old Non-HD Wii-game). The success of WiiU doesn`t change the costs of the game.

Why do you think they made the next “Dragon Quest 10″ for 3DS too? As streaming-only? Because its cheap and they earn lots of money from it! Thats why. You have to pay monthly/yearly fee to play it. Well, the costs for it are not so high, but you know- its one game! Of course 30-50 dollars per year are not cheap if the game cannot be played then any more as its over with streaming then. Its like amazon-video. Costing you yearly 49 Euros. Seems cheap? Trust me, its not. If Internet collapses all is gone, your money is gone too ;) No one knows that dirty secrets they don`t say to you. No one guarantees that internet will not break down.

Its the same why they bring DragonQuest 10 on Wii, but not on WIiU => development-costs. But Wii-version will be not streaming, but a retail game. But the point is- you pay 80-100 dollars for the game then, and get not so good graphics like on 3DS (because 3DS has better hardware, a dualcore-cpu, 6 MB instead of 3 MB Graphics-ram, 96 MB Ram for games instead of 64 MB on Wii etc) and also the game does not support online (my guess as the service got capped a few months ago).

41% boost is pretty big for a dry week of releases. Maybe people wanted a Mario Kart Bundle to go with Hyrule Warriors when it releases

  • D-Man

But what about sales in the U.S.?

  • Gootube Suck Ass

I’m glad dat the Wii U is rising ( In THE FUCKING EMPIRE OF THE RISING SUN HERP DERP SWAG YOLO ) … but it’s only in Japan. One country won’t help Nintendo to be profitable. People need to understand that the United States of America is the most important regional market of all! Just look at Last-gen. the PlayStation 3 out sold xbox 360 in everywhere! But yet they still lost to the Xbox 360 … why ? Because the Xbox dominated them Just in North America! ( the Xbox sold like over 50 Millions units in the United States alone I believe ). It’s also the region that sold the most games !!! If you could win in the U.S … you’re gonna dominate the console industry, just like how the PS2 and The Wii, dominated in previous gens. Or the PlayStation 4 right now.
    God Bless America!
