Last year the world was surprised to learn that Google was considering purchasing Twitch, the top site for live game streaming, for the hefty price of $1 billion. Google eventually backed out of the deal and Amazon picked up for a cool $970 million. Obviously game streaming is big business and Google wants to get in on that. That’s why they’re launching YouTube Gaming, a new focus on games for one of the original purposes of YouTube: sharing let’s plays and funny videos from video games.
Here’s the short snippet describing the service from the official blog post:
YouTube Gaming is built to be all about your favorite games and gamers, with more videos than anywhere else. From “Asteroids” to “Zelda,” more than 25,000 games will each have their own page, a single place for all the best videos and live streams about that title. You’ll also find channels from a wide array of game publishers and YouTube creators.
What this means is you’ll be able to visit a specific page for a game and see every video that has been tagged with that topic. Suddenly, browsing YouTube videos just got a lot like picking which Twitch streams you want to watch.
Google is hyping this new version of YouTube by making sure you’ll be able to subscribe to game channels directly, so any time a new video is posted for the game, you can find it immediately. They also promise that YouTube search will be smart, and typing “call” will show you “Call of Duty” and not “Call Me Maybe.”
YouTube hasn’t given a specific launch date for this new YouTube Gaming focus, but they have promised we’ll see more at E3.
