Sad news here on Sunday afternoon: longtime Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has died at the age of 55. Nintendo of Japan released the following statement following Iwata’s death:
“Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.”
Iwata missed E3 last month due to health issues, and had surgery shortly after. He joined Nintendo in the late 1980s and was promoted in 2000 as the head of its corporate planning division. He was later promoted to company president.
He was very well-known and popular among Nintendo and gaming fans around the world.
Rest in peace, Iwata-san.
