Devil’s Third released in Europe over the weekend and since then, gamers and critics alike have not been kind to the game. While some people are reporting having fun with the multiplayer aspect of the game, tons of technical issues in the single player caused the game’s MetaCritic score to drop to just 41, making it one of the lowest rated Wii U games in history. For reference, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric’s MetaCritic score is 32.
Despite all of this negative criticism, creator of the game Tomonobu Itagaki took to Facebook to express his feelings on the negative reviews and feedback from players and critics all across the country. Itagaki says he can accept the criticism that some critics and players have leveled at the game, but he feels as though those discussing the multiplayer aspect of the game didn’t have a chance to review it properly.
Unfortunately the scores we’ve been receiving in Europe are pretty awful.
Some of the criticism we’re getting is constructive and fair – I can accept that.
But in general, I’m going to guess that most of the people reviewing the game weren’t given a chance to evaluate it properly.
Just as one example, we designed the online multiplayer mode to be enjoyed together with tons of people, but it seems dozens of reviewers were only allowed to try the game in a closed environment.
That’s extremely unfortunate for everyone involved. As you can imagine, no one can effectively evaluate the playability of multiplayer games under these conditions.
Itagaki’s assessment is true in that multiplayer games typically can’t be tested the way they’re supposed to be before release with such a limited number of people playing. It’s one reason why Nintendo hosted not one, but two Splatoon demo events to give everyone a chance to play around with the game and stress-test the servers before going live with it.
Did you pick up Devil’s Third? What are your thoughts? North America won’t be getting their hands on the game until December 4.
