Microsoft’s Phil Spencer gushes about Nintendo’s first party games


Over the past few weeks Nintendo’s VP of sales Scott Moffitt has been taking small pot shots at the competition in interviews. Most recently he stated that the Wii U GamePad was the only innovative thing about this console cycle, subtly implying that Microsoft and Sony’s recent efforts were homogenized too much.

It’s not uncommon for studio heads to go back and forth, as we’ve seen from both Microsoft and Sony, but Phil Spencer has had nothing but good things to say about Nintendo and their games. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Spencer spoke about Nintendo’s first party titles and Splatoon.

On the Wii U, I think people downplay how many units they’ve sold. I’ve got a Wii U, I think there’s some great games on there. I think Splatoon’s a really nice game and I don’t think there’s a first-party out there that has the strength of IP that Nintendo has. They’re always a beacon to me when I look at what it means to build a first-party portfolio of products, they’ve done a great job.

Spencer has been working tirelessly to help turn around the Xbox One’s image problem it obtained during launch, so it’s nice to see that he pays Nintendo the respect they deserve for their amazing first party software. What do you think?
