Chris Pranger’s appearance on last week’s Part Time Gamers podcast has ended up with him being fired from the company for his remarks. Pranger first made the news available on Facebook in a public post which has since been deleted, but confirms that his firing was related to his comments made on that podcast.
Pranger was invited onto the show to talk about his work as part of the Nintendo Treehouse localization team, where Pranger went on a mini-rant about customers who beg for niche products that cost more money to translate than they’ll make on the return. Pranger used Xenoblade Chronicles as one example of a game that required someone to “eat” the cost of the translation.
The transcript from the podcast was originally posted on NeoGAF, where many gaming sites began covering the comments. Pranger’s now deleted Facebook post says that he began to get a lot of negative attention from fans and the like for his comments.
I spent the last week in a miserable place once the podcast began getting coverage. I was instantly scared when a coworker poked me and said, ‘Hey, you’re on GoNintendo.’ Suddenly article after article began appearing in game sites of all languages. Comments sections painted me as an idiot and the like. My Twitter started giving me hourly reminders from people meaning well and otherwise. It seemed unthinkable that I’d be let go for a single moment of poor judgment and my own misunderstandings, but here we are.
Pranger wouldn’t comment on the exact parts of the podcast that got him into trouble and Nintendo hasn’t released any statement about the firing.
