Mario Kart 8 was the fastest-selling Wii U game in Japan, but Splatoon has taken that title away from the long-standing series after this week. A quick comparison of the two titles shows that Splatoon has surpassed Mario Kart 8 sales after the 18 week mark, with Splatoon still selling 20k copies this week, while Mario Kart 8 only managed just shy of 6k.
Putting that into perspective, the lifetime sales in Japan of Splatoon are 681k, while lifetime sales of Mario Kart 8 in Japan are 678k. With Splatoon taking the crown from Mario Kart 8, it’s obvious that Nintendo is capable of producing new IPs that appeal to everyone.
To break that down in a week by week look, we see that Splatoon is consistently outselling Mario Kart 8 and sales of the game continue to rise, despite sales for Mario Kart 8 tapering off into the low thousands. With the continued trickle of DLC support and Nintendo’s focus on Splatfests, we’d argue that the support for Splatoon has been much greater than Mario Kart 8, which has seen select pieces of DLC released over the last few months.
