To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Commander Keen, id Software programmer John Romero has released a video of the early Super Mario Bros. 3 prototype he created while working for the company. id Software was working on side-scrolling technology for PCs back in the day, which was very hard to achieve, according to Digital Foundry.
The gameplay shows that the PC version doesn’t quite measure up to the NES version created by Nintendo, but it’s a pretty close approximation. It was never created to be released, but rather to show Nintendo what a home PC was capable of doing back then.
